Travel Pack A guide to walking, cycling and public transport in and around The Q1 Development located in Wyberton, Boston Produced by

The Quadrant Travel Pack Why a Travel Pack? Well, moving into a new home presents the opportunity for you to think about new ways to travel which may help save you money and be less stressful. New ways of travelling can also be fun, quicker and of course healthier! This Travel Pack is intended to help residents, staff, visitors and spectators at The Quadrant by providing information on the various sustainable travel options available.

1

Funding for this Travel Pack has been provided by Chestnut Homes, with the aim of getting you to consider more sustainable forms of travel, e.g. walking and cycling. The Travel Pack provides information on local footpaths, cycle paths, bus routes and available car shares in the area. What is our aim? We wish to provide comprehensive, up to date information to enable you, staff and visitors to The Quadrant to make informed choices about the sustainable travel options available. To increase the use of more sustainable modes of transport including walking, cycling and the use of public transport for trips to and from The Quadrant development. To reduce the number of single occupancy car trips to and from The Quadrant development and encourage car sharing. Health and Financial Benefits Walking or cycling can often be the healthier option for those shorter journeys. It can even be quicker, more fun‌and save you money!

Walking

Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active and become healthier Walking Routes

Make it Social

You will see from the plan on page 7 that a number of walking routes are available to local shops, one primary school and to local community facilities. There is a helpful Boston Town Centre map as well on page 8.

Health walks are organised by Boston Borough Council Monday to Friday at various locations. See the below link for further information: http://www.boston.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=4032

On pages 9 and 10 you will find details of nearby local amenities, along with approximate walking and cycling times.

Health and Financial Benefits

Cycling

Cycling to work or simply to the shops is one of the most time-efficient ways to combine regular exercise with your everyday routine Cycling Routes The Quadrant development is only a 9 minute bike ride (1.8 miles) to Boston Market Place. Surrounding the Market Place are big named shops and cycle parking facilities are located throughout the town. If you wish to cycle recreationally then The Quadrant development is ideally placed. There are multiple routes in the area where you can enjoy a scenic ride out to the countryside. Why not try the Water Railway Route running 33 miles between Boston and Lincoln. The route is formed using disused railway lines, for a long stretch running parallel to the River Witham.

3

For more routes and maps visit: https://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/countryside/visiting/visiting-the-countryside/cycling/120948.article Cycling to local amenities such as the schools and shops is achievable and can be more time effective than using the car. Why is it important to cycle? Regular physical activity can help protect you from serious diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, diabetes and arthritis. Riding your bicycle regularly is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of health problems associated with an inactive lifestyle. Cycling is a healthy, low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. As well as being fun, it is also a cheap way to travel and good for the environment. An estimated one billion people ride bicycles everyday – for transport, recreation and sport. The National Cycle Challenge The National Cycle Challenge is a fun, free competition to encourage workplaces and individuals to experience first-hand the delights and benefits of riding a bike. Anyone over the age of 13 can take part. Competitions run throughout the year with the chance to win prizes.

Public Transport Train Services

Boston railway station is located on Station Approach, just outside the town centre, making it within easy walking distance of the shopping facilities and other attractions. Trains operate from Nottingham (via Sleaford) to the west and the seaside resort of Skegness to the north-west. Services are generally hourly in each direction Monday – Saturday and 2 hourly on Sunday. Journey times by train from Boston station are approximately 35 minutes to Skegness and 25 minutes to Sleaford. Connections to mainline services are available at Grantham Station approximately a 55 minute train journey, so travel to Peterborough, Lincoln and London are easily achievable. The station has some handy facilities to make journeys more comfortable including a waiting room (open Monday to Saturday), as well as toilet and refreshment facilities. Car Parking is available along Station Approach and bike storage is available in the station. For more information, please visit www.nationalrail.co.uk

All information provided is correct at the time of printing. The Kirton to Boston service runs hourly to Boston Market Place and terminates at the Bus Station. Alternatively the Boston to Spalding service terminates at the Pilgrim Hospital. Why take the bus? n n n n

It can be more economical than car based travel, especially if you buy a multi-purchase or season ticket pass Social benefits of travelling with others Environmentally a bus also has benefits, as one bus can do the job of 40 cars and significantly reduce carbon emissions The regular exercise of walking to and from the bus stop can fulfil the government’s recommended 30 minutes of exercise per day, which could improve your health at the same time!

Did you know? There is a Call Connect service which provides a bus service, the timetable is not fixed but responds to passenger requests, this means its routes are different each day depending on bookings made by passengers. Further informstion can be found here: http://www.lincsinterconnect.com

Car Sharing

If you are travelling further distances and need to use a car, you could consider sharing your journey to save money Car sharing is when there is more than one occupant in a private car. We all share cars regularly, with our friends and family, without thinking about it. But there are often times when a driver has empty seats in the car simply because they don’t know who needs a lift. When can I share a car? Car-sharing is appropriate for regular journeys and one-off journeys anywhere in the country, such as:

About the Local Area

Set in the heart of the Lincolnshire fenland and on the edge of the Wash, Wyberton sits south-west of the classic market town of Boston Boston was once one of the countries major centres of trade, being second only to London. The town grew from the riches of wool and cloth it traded, and so was born the May Fair where opportunities for trade flourished. The Fair began in 1125 and still takes place every May, however now there is more candy cotton sold than sheeps’ wool! Boston’s markets are in full action every Wednesday and Saturday where you can pick up a range of local produce. The town is home to Boston United Football Club, also known as The Pilgrims. Their new home is being built as part of The Quadrant development. Why not get involved in supporting your local club at match days? The club also has an extensive community programme which includes a wide range of healthy activities, way beyond its football roots. Just a short bus journey or 9 minute bike ride will take you to Boston’s Market Place and Pescod Square where a variety of shopping facilities are located. This involves: n

Providing residents and employees with a travel pack regarding the range of sustainable transport alternatives to enable them to make informed choices.

n

Encouraging less reliance on car based travel.

n

Promoting the use of public transport, walking and cycling.

How is monitoring undertaken? Traffic surveys are required to monitor the Travel Plan, this comprises of:1.

Multi-modal surveys of movements (pedestrian/cycle/car) into and out of The Quadrant Development – this will be co-ordinated by the Travel Plan Coordinator.

2.

Householder and employee questionnaire – each household or employee will be required to complete a questionnaire regarding infrastructure and services for sustainable travel within the local area.

3.

Boston United supporter’s questionnaire.

A bi-annual travel survey will commence the year of the first occupation and run until the development is fully completed. Each survey will be followed up with a report prepared by the Travel Plan Manager, the report will summarise the travel survey results and assess the performance against previous years (noting any trends). What must you do? On-going liaison between the Travel Plan Coordinator and you will be required, particularly in relation to the monitoring e.g. questionnaire responses will assist the Travel Plan Coordinator in monitoring the effect of the Travel Pack.
