Lafayette Industries’ 45th anniversary was made even more special when its innovative STEPUP program received the prestigious “Cutting Edge Award” from the Missouri Association of County Developmental Disabilities Services in recognition of its work helping people with intellectual or developmental disabilities gain or maintain competitive employment. Lafayette has partnered with the Pioneer Bakery and Café in Kirkwood, where several graduates from the STEPUP program are currently employed. Lafayette is the largest, full-time employer in Missouri of adults with developmental disabilities and currently employs more than 400 workers. 45 196On September 10, 2021, Missouri’s 57th Governor Mike Parson spoke at Thornhill, home of Missouri’s second governor, Frederick Bates, in Faust Park as part of his Bicentennial Tour honoring Missouri’s 200th birthday. The occasion marked 196 years since a Missouri governor had spoken at the mansion which was built in 1819.

For the 4th year in a row, St. Luke’s Surrey Place has been named a named one of the Best Nursing Homes for Short-Term Rehabilitation by U.S. News & World Report. U.S. News evaluated more than 15,000 facilities using data published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The short-term rehabilitation rating is based on the quality of care provided to residents who spent 100 days or less at a skilled nursing facility after a hospitalization. It focuses on quality measures including staffing, outcomes and processes of care.4

A demographic analysis of the city of Chesterfield’s population showed 49 is the median age among city residents, well above the U.S. median age of 38.2. Today, 43% of the city’s population are 55 or older, with this demographic anticipated to grow to nearly 50% of the city’s population in the next 15 years. 49 The newly formed Tom Shaw Foundation presented a check in the amount of $9,250 to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Missouri Chapter, following the inaugural Tom Shaw Memorial Walk for 9,250 Alzheimer’s event held on October 3, 2021, on the Katy Trail in Augusta, Mo. The event was the first of its kind for the newly formed foundation, which launched in the spring with a mission to continue Tom Shaw’s leadership in collaboration, civic betterment and community pride. Shaw, who was president of Chesterfield-based Tom Shaw Realtors and founder of what is now called Progress 64 West, died in 2018 at the age of 88 after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

1,600On October 30, Innsbrook Resorts broke ground on a new treehouse home which will be a place of respite for breast cancer patients undergoing treatments. Innsbrook is building the new respite retreat home in partnership with Faith through Fire, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reduce the anxiety and fear that breast cancer patients feel and replace it with hope and a path toward thriving. The 1,600-square- foot respite home will feature three bedrooms and two baths, two separate decks, and a bird’seye view of the 146 acres of terrain below. The respite home will be the first treehouse built in the resort community’s newest development, Treehouses of Talblick.
