Finding Your Fall
I
t’s fall! The kids are back into their school routines (hopefully), the air is finally cooling down after another hot summer, and fall activities are popping up everywhere. These days a family can delight in a day outside at corn mazes, pumpkin patches, fall family fun festivals, train rides, pumpkin walks and orchard visits with ease. And if you’ve got a family fond of fright nights, spooky sites and haunted houses, there are tons for you to visit in our region at all levels of scariness. If you’ve ever made your way through a corn maze and wondered how farmers create such intricate designs, head to page 16 for Katie Riley’s excellent behind-the-scenes look at the creation process. Comic-Con Isn’t Just for Comic Books Anymore
omic-Con used to be the place to dig through boxes and boxes of comic books to find the edition you needed to fill out your collection, but nowadays it’s so much more than that. Once upon a time the cosplayers, fanboys and fan girls were called nerds for their love of all things pop culture. Fast forward 20 years and everyone lets their nerd flag fly high and proud. Every year the Baltimore Convention Center brings thousands of people together to celebrate Trekkies, Jedis, time travelers, and any and everything that is gracing our TVs, movie screens, and gaming systems. Haunted House of Addictions Moves to Marley Station Mall
F
or the third year in a row students from Northeast High School in Pasadena are bringing to life the horrors of drug use and consequences of addiction. For the past two years the program was held at Northeast High School and was named the Haunted House of Addictions. This year it will be held at Marley Station Mall in Glen Burnie and is now called the Human Experience. Brandi Dorsey, the facilitator for Northeast High’s Human Performance Signature Program, coordinates the event with the help of community and business partners. However, she says, just as in previous years, it is the efforts of the students which brings awareness to the community about the dangers of drugs and the devastation that addiction brings. The Human Experience will feature two parts. The first is the Haunted House of Addictions, which begins at an outdoor party where two students “overdose.” Visitors follow their stories through a series of events after the party, including scenes with grieving friends and parents. The second part is the Mental Health Wellness Space, where simulations allow you to walk in the shoes of high school students and experience the anxiety and stresses of life which can lead to drug use—such as grades, peer pressure and social media

bullying. The idea is for you to feel the student’s loneliness and isolation and begin to understand how they arrived at the point of drug use. Lastly, resources and tools are presented which can hopefully prevent future tragedy. It should take approximately 60 minutes to go through the Human Experience. In previous years, due to space and
time constraints, only about 200 people could actually attend. This year Dorsey was excited to share it will take place over two days and may reach 750 to 1,000 area students. Each public high school in the county has been invited to bring students to the Human Experience as a field trip. The Signature Program facilitators at each high school determine which student groups will attend. In addition, every freshman student at Northeast High School will attend. The program will be open to the public on October 11 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is no admission fee, but due to the intense nature of the event, no one under 12 will be admitted, even with a parent. The Human Experience is being set up in a section of Marley Station Mall currently closed to the public. To access the area, use the mall entrance on the second level. new & notable young person.” Rather than being weighed down by debt as soon as they enter the real world, he says, “college graduates with little to no debt are able to apply their financial resources to their futures, like saving for a home or starting a family, and that’s extremely powerful.” Indeed, some simple math provided by Michelle Winner, director of marketing for Maryland 529, demonstrates that beginning to invest in a plan during a future college student’s toddler days can easily save them (and you) close to half of out-of-pocket tuition costs. For example, if you set a goal to save $25,000 for college costs over a 15-year period and assume an average annual return in line with current estimates of 6 percent, you’d be investing about $15,500 over 15 years, or roughly $86 per month, to potentially build a $25,000 investment for college. On the other hand, if you or your college student take out a loan for that $25,000, at the Federal direct undergraduate loan rate of 5.05 percent, you’d be looking at paying approximately $32,000 over ten years, or $266 per month, to repay that $25,000 of student debt.
The 529 Plan’s Plentiful Positives
T
wo hundred and sixty years ago, Ben Franklin wrote in his book The Way to Wealth, “an investment in knowledge always pay the best interest.” Franklin’s statement still rings true today; The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment rate and average annual salary among those with just a high school degree was 4.1 percent and $37,960 in 2018, whereas it was just 2.2 percent and $62,296 for college graduates. Of course, better employment and pay prospects are the result of what is indeed a very costly investment: The College Board reports that the current average annual tuition at public and private fouryear universities stands at all-time highs of $10,230 and $35,830, respectively. Worse yet, these numbers are expected to continue growing. The good news? Maryland recognizes the value of a well-educated workforce and offers two forms of college saving plans: the Maryland Prepaid College Trust (MPCT), a defined-benefit plan that allows you to save for future college tuition at today’s prices, and the Maryland College Investment Plan (MCIP), which is tied to a mutual fund investment portfolio. Both plans incentivize saving for and funding college and other forms of education by providing tax-deferred growth and tax-free distributions.
Preventing Student Debt
Because 529 plans make it easy for parents or other relatives to systematically invest money on a tax-benefited basis to help children fund their education, it follows that participating in a 529 plan helps more young people avoid becoming a part of the $1.49 trillion student loan debt crisis—or at least leave college with less student loan debt than the average graduate’s $31,172. As Greg Klingler, a 529-investing father of two and the Director of Wealth Management at the Government Employees’ Benefits Association (GEBA) puts it, “The biggest benefit of a 529 plan is that every dollar it generates is a dollar that doesn’t have to be borrowed, and repaid with interest, by a

Unlike many other interest-bearing investments, 529 plans are designed to appeal to everyone. They have no income, age, or annual contribution limits; are low maintenance, allowing you to “set it and forget it” by scheduling automatic deductions from your bank account or paycheck; can be gifted to any relative; and are guaranteed to be used for their intended purpose, as named beneficiaries have no legal rights to the funds, which remain under your complete control. Plus, the Maryland 529 plan offers some perks that many states’ plans don’t, including:

new & notable • A deduction of up to $2,500 (or $5,000 for married couples filing jointly) in contributions per investment plan beneficiary per year from your state taxes if you’re the account holder(s). • The same deduction as above if you’re simply a contributor or pair of contributors to a 529 plan—we’re looking at you, grandma and grandpa. • An annual gift tax exclusion on deposits of up to $15,000 per individual per year (or $30,000 for married couples filing jointly). • The ability to apply up to $10,000 in tax-free withdrawals to tuition expenses, per year and per beneficiary, at private, public, or religious elementary and secondary schools. • The Save4College State Contribution Program, which provides eligible low- and middle-income families who apply between January 1 and June 1, 2020 with a $250 or $500 529 plan contribution from the state.
The Funds Won’t Be Wasted
Both Maryland 529’s Winner and GEBA’s Klingler say there are two common misconceptions that might make some people hesitant to open or contribute to a 529 plan. First, many people assume that funds can only be used on tuition at colleges or universities in Maryland, meaning that your investment would be wasted if your child or relative chooses to venture beyond the Old Line State’s lines. In fact, 529 funds can not only be used at colleges and universities in any state, but also at any two-year community college, trade or technical school, or even international schools that have a federal school code. Second, many fear that if a child receives a scholarship or chooses not to go to college it will render 529 investments pointless. In truth, neither situation will disappear your earnings, as your many options include using 529 funds to pay tuition and fees not covered by a scholarship, for example room and board or books; withdrawing unused funds, without the 10 percent federal penalty you’d otherwise face, up to the amount of the scholarship; transferring your account to another member of your beneficiary’s family; or, finally, withdrawing unused funds and paying the 10 percent penalty which, after many years of interest, might still result in you coming out in the green. Burgers & Bands for Suicide Prevention Comes to Annapolis
A
nn Brennan and her son Ethan started raising money for suicide prevention when he was 15 years old and a student at Severna Park High School. “We did these crazy long 24-hour walks through the woods, just the two of us,” she says, noting that at the time Ethan was battling depression and was beginning to self-harm. “We did that two years in a row. And each time we did it, we raised a little bit of money, which was great,” she says. “But we kept saying, ‘it’s great, but we’re not raising awareness, especially not here in the community.’ ” So when Brennan came up with the idea for Burgers & Bands, she thought, “This is this is exactly what we’ve been talking about for the last two years.” Within a day, Brennan and Ethan teamed up with their friends and local realtors Jennifer and Kevin Bonk, and after a few phone calls had the Severna Park Taphouse booked, and the Priddy Academy started lining up bands. The rest, they say, is history. In May 2017, the first Burgers & Bands for Suicide Prevention raised $8,000. “I couldn’t believe how much people donated. It was awesome,” Brennan says. It was the beginning of what the event is today: an eight-hour festival featuring a great lineup of bands, who all donate their time to the cause, plus dancing, food, and local mental health resources on hand like NAMI and the county’s Mobile Crisis Team so people can get resources at the festival. But, says Brennan, “It’s not sad. We don’t do anything sad. There’s no sad speeches. There’s no sad songs.” It’s all about raising awareness. The community has urged Burgers & Bands to grow in Severna Park, but it has reached capacity at the Severna Park Taphouse, which now boasts the outdoor stage as well
as an indoor acoustic stage. The money raised has grown significantly as well, with last year’s event raising $80,000. After the first event in 2017, all of the money raised went to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. But now, says Brennan, in addition to donating $10,000 to the foundation for each event, Burgers & Bands has shifted to giving the money to local causes. After giving $2,000 to Severna Park High School to bring in a person to speak about suicide, Brennan realized she could give the money to local schools and organizations with a need. Since then, her organization has given grant money to local elementary schools for peace walks, comfort boxes, mindfulness programs and other mental health causes. With the annual Severna Park Burgers & Bands running well, Brennan decided to organize a second event in Annapolis. Burgers & Bands Annapolis will take place on October 20, from noon to 8 p.m., featuring the Kelly Bell Band, the Great Heights Band, Mojo Bozo’s Electric Circus, Mac + Blue, Dan Haas and more. The event will be held at the Byzantium at SS Constantine & Helen Green Orthodox Church and will have two stages—an outdoor stage and an indoor, acoustic stage. The Byzantium will be providing the food, which has led Brennan to lovingly call the event “Burgers, Bands & Baklava.” According to Burgers & Bands, “It’s a community event, a party, and a wildly fun time. But most importantly it is an event with a purpose, to show people in Anne Arundel County, no matter what your age, you are not alone.” You can buy tickets ($15; free for kids under 12) at burgersandbands.org. n 1996, Teresa Summers had the idea to open a small fiveacre corn maze on her farm in Frederick so that visitors picking pumpkins could enjoy the fun of getting lost in the stalks. “When we started out, it was just me and a lawnmower,” Summers says. “From there it just grew.” More than 800 corn mazes across the United States will open their trails this fall to visitors who love to get lost. The appeal of corn mazes has more than tripled in the past 20 years,
forcing farmers to meet the demand with increasingly complex designs and accompanying themes. Indeed, corn mazes are big business, and farmers are eager to invest in a maze that might generate more income in six weeks than an entire year of traditional farming. Since opening, the Summers Farm maze has expanded to more than twice its original size and draws thousands of visitors from all over the state—and the design requires way more than a lawnmower.
For help with these complex designs, farmers like Teresa Summers are turning to professional maze design companies like the Maize Company, based in Utah. Professional corn maze companies assist farmers in the design process through the use of drones, GPS or graphing the design on paper. Planning starts months in advance, beginning with the design or theme choice. “The design plays a big part,” says Carol Paul, manager of the corn maze at Sunrise Farm in Gambrills. “So many people will actually choose a
corn maze based on its design. People will bypass a closer corn maze and drive to a further one just because it has a theme that appeals to them, or has a more complicated design.” After a design is chosen, the farmers begin planting the corn in early July, laying the plants out in a grid format, with equal rows horizontal and vertical. “This year we planted 30,000 seeds—15,000 horizontal, 15,000 vertical,” says Teresa Summers. Within just a few weeks of new growth, the maze design company will visit and decide which rows to eliminate. After that, the newly created trails require weekly weeding and mowing, and often, a lot of luck. “The deer and the weather can be a nuisance and we always worry about disease to the corn,” Paul says. “Preseason, you pray for rain and then once you open, you pray it never rains again.” The design, planting and execution is just the beginning. Today’s mazes often feature interactive trivia and games to assist maze-goers through the trails, and the theme can extend throughout the farm. For this year’s Harry Potter theme, the maze at Sunrise Farm features a
scavenger hunt to find the 7 horcruxes, as well as the Goblet of Fire. In the barnyard, visitors can enjoy butter beer while swinging on broomstick swings, and play quidditch for prizes. At Summers Farm, visitors will find a maze that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon landing, with games and trivia about Apollo 11, making for a fun, but educational experience. Despite the months of planning and complexity required for these mazes, their appeal still harkens back to simple fall days spent outdoors. “Agritourism is everywhere because families are looking to step away from technology and enjoy an afternoon outside,” Summers says. Paul agrees. “It’s not just being outdoors in the fall weather. Corn mazes are like a game that a family can do together. And in October the experience of walking through a spooky trail surrounded by towering corn stalks— there’s nothing else like it.” Get lost in the fun at these four Maryland corn mazes that feature elaborate designs and thrilling twists and turns.

Our area is jam packed with fall festivals that feature hayrides, cider tastings, corn mazes and bounce pads for the little ones. We’ve also no shortage of adult spooky trail walks, zombie runs and downright terrifying haunted

houses. But these four festivals offer a little something different. The two pumpkin glow events are a new(ish) take on Halloween fun, mashing together the drive-through holiday lights festivals with Halloween themes, making for a fun walk in the woods with cool lit up pumpkin carvings and displays.

The 30th annual Sea Witch festival will bring the Rehoboth boardwalk to life with Halloween fun with a weekend full of beach games, trick or treating, a pet costume parade, a 5k race, arts and crafts vendors and, the festival’s biggest draw, the giant costume parade on Saturday at 3 p.m. The signature parade features motorized floats, bands, Halloween-themed balloon floats. Throughout the weekend, you can also enjoy live music, plus great family-friendly games like scavenger hunts, a broom-toss contest, a Kids Zone, hay rides, haunted attractions, a horse show on the beach, and a haunted bonfire on the beach. The festival runs October 25–27. Consider using public transit like the Jolly Trolley from the Delaware Seashore State Park, or DART transit from Lewes and points north. On October 19 and 20, head to Monkton, Maryland’s Ladew Topiary Gardens, deemed “the most outstanding topiary garden in America” by the Garden Club of America, to see hundreds of intricately carved jack-o’-lanterns and Halloween-themed illuminated sculptures. There will also be live music, carving demonstrations by local artists, and a special educational exhibits on creepy crawly critters. Garden Glow is in its second year and sold out in 2018. You can even carve your own “glow” pumpkin beforehand to be on display for the weekend. Tickets are $25 for adults, $18 for students, and $6 for children ages 2 to 12. At this interactive Halloween festival, you can stroll through the one-third-mile-long trail at Lake Fairfax Park, which will be decorated some 5,000 glowing jack-o’-lanterns and lighted haunted displays like pirate ships, haunted castles and creepy graveyards. Along the way you can watch master carvers at work, sample fall snacks and beverages, and head to the pumpkin patch to take home your own. The walk should take between half an hour and 45 minutes. Strollers are welcome, but pets are not. Tickets are sold in 30-minute increment time slots and start at $23 for adults, kids from $17 and anytime tickets from $28. Kids under two are free. Sort yourself into your favorite Hogwarts house, pack up your wands and head to Chestertown for its annual townwide Harry Potter Wizarding Weekend, October 4–5. On October 4, kick off the weekend at the wizarding street party, while ducking into local shops for themed activities like potion making. On Saturday, the fun will continue with a scavenger hunt, costume contest, parade, wand-swap, and events at “Gringotts” bank. Along High Street and in Fountain Park, there will be vendors and arts and crafts, food, and a showing of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” Most of the events at the Harry Potter Festival are free, though some require preregistration.
