A difference made in the lives of Chesapeake College Foundation Student Scholars

This colonial logic speaks to how Chesapeake College also views the region. The College serves more than 18% of Maryland’s land mass but only 2% of its population. Some of our students may travel more than an hour to attend classes in Wye Mills, while others simply walk from their bedroom to the living room to log in to their online course.

Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline, and Dorchester counties are more interconnected and interdependent than ever, uniting to meet the needs of the region’s rural residents. Regional economic councils now strategically steer and support the ambitions of multiple counties combined.

When you support the Chesapeake College Foundation, you aren’t just supporting your neighbor. The overwhelming majority of our students remain in the region after they complete their studies, so your gift assures there is a radiologic technologist in Easton to complete your scan... an HVAC technician to fix your furnace in Chestertown... an accountant in Cambridge to do your taxes... a teacher to educate your grandchildren in Denton... and a police officer on the scene of the traffic accident in Queenstown. For every $1 invested at Chesapeake College, students gain $4.70 in lifetime earnings, taxpayers gain $1.30 in added tax revenue and public sector savings, and society gains $5.10 in added state revenue and social savings.* While it hasn’t been without its challenges, we’ve had a great—and dare we say “normal”—year at both Chesapeake College and the Foundation. Operational Highlights This year was a building year for the Chesapeake College Foundation.

We recruited and voted in seven new Foundation Board directors.

These new directors have filled service gaps for the organization in terms of the skills they bring to the board table, their geographic representation, and their knowledge of the diverse industries that Chesapeake College students enter after they obtain certificates or degrees. New directors also bring with them connections and knowledge that serve both the Foundation and the College. We are so grateful for everyone who gives their time to the Chesapeake College Foundation Board.

With the COVID-19 pandemic (mostly) in the rearview, the Foundation worked to reconnect with long-time donors.

We also worked to evaluate scholarship guidelines for some of our longest supported funds, assuring all are serving the needs of modern students with criteria that matches the current programs and degrees offered by the College.

The old adage “it takes a village” is true when it applies to Chesapeake College.

Douglas Gill began serving on the Board in FY23

and is a partner and managing director at Snowden Lane Partners, an independent wealth advisory firm located in Bethesda. Raised in Dorchester County, Doug jokes that from the moment he left home, he has been working to get back. He now splits his time between Bethesda and Cambridge. “I want to represent Dorchester County and help to support access to life-changing educational and vocational opportunities for its population.”

Robin Martin began her service on

the Board in FY23 and resides and works in Caroline County as a vice president at regional bank M&T. At home, Robin has four sons, including twins who have taken courses at Chesapeake College. “I have been an advocate for technical training in high schools and college as I lived, first-hand, with a student who was not interested in a ‘typical’ college degree. I believe very strongly in the mission of Chesapeake College, and I was excited to join the Foundation Board.”

Bill sees firsthand the many skills needed in our region—carpentry, metal fabrication, electrical, etc.— in his role as director of business development for TechOps Specialty Vehicles, located in Stevensville.

A retired law enforcement professional, Bill said: “I am looking forward to assisting the community where I work.” He is passionate about supporting students who may not have the means to complete certifications that could land them well-paying jobs.

J. Brian Stitcher has first-hand experience with the value Chesapeake College brings to the region. As owner of the accounting firm JBS & Company LLC, he has hired several Chesapeake College accounting graduates, including those who began work with his firm as part of their degree’s cooperative-learning experience. “I am extremely grateful to Chesapeake College for providing qualified students that enable us to expand our footprint in the community. I welcome the opportunity to give back.” Brian is representing Kent County.

Brandon Hesson is an alum of Chesapeake College and served as the director of the College’s Cambridge Center from 2019 until January of 2023. When Brandon left the College for a new role as the Assistant Manager of the City of Cambridge, the Foundation Board seized on the opportunity to have him join as a voting director. “I believe Chesapeake College serves an important role in workforce development across the Mid-Shore and beyond. Scholarship opportunities provided by the Foundation help make those opportunities possible for underserved populations.”

Remembering

Dewey Blades Alumnus, College trustee, Foundation board director, teacher, and generous donor— Dewey Blades tirelessly served and supported the students of Chesapeake College. A resident and former mayor of the town of Vienna, Maryland, he was also employed by Delmarva Power for 43 years.

While employed with DP, Mr. Blades earned his degree in electronics from the College.

He went on to serve on the Chesapeake College Board of Trustees and the Foundation Board for more than 30 years.

Mr. Blades passed away on April 1, 2023, and is survived by his wife Connie, as well as their three sons and a daughter.

Danielle Wilson, MSN, RN, NE-BC will represent Talbot County on the Foundation Board beginning in FY24 and is currently the Director of Patient Care Services Operations at University of Maryland Shore Regional Medical Center. Nursing is one of the most popular degrees to pursue at the College and Danielle is well-poised to be the voice in support of these students. “This is a great opportunity, and I feel that my role and knowledge of healthcare in Maryland will be beneficial to the Board.”

Shelly Gross-Wade is a seasoned economic

development professional, with more than 40 years in the workforce development world. Until recently, she spent 24 years growing and leading a nonprofit that provides financial service support to small businesses in Prince George’s County. Now the founder and CEO of Bay Crossing Consulting Services, Shelly says “I would like to use my experiences and my networks to volunteer in a tangible way in Queen Anne’s County, where I’ve resided for the past 25 years.”

In recognition of all of his gifts that he shared with the College, Mr. Blades will always be listed as Board Emeritus on the Chesapeake College Foundation Board.

Financial Highlights The Chesapeake College Foundation enjoyed a solid financial year in 2022-23. In the previous fiscal years we raised funds to expand skilled trades. This year we concentrated on engaging with long-time scholarship donors and emphasizing how their continued gifts have made an impact. We saw positive movement in the financial markets; income in our portfolio gained more than $694,000, helping to recoup some of our net investment losses from FY22’s market downturn.

We also completed a public request for proposals for new investment services. After a review of 19 proposals from across the country, the Board approved a new vendor for FY24—Murrary, McGehrin, & Shiery of Annapolis. This Merrill-Bank of America firm has a deep bench of experts who will provide excellent customer service and understand the financial investment needs of foundations that support community colleges.

People Highlights It’s the people of Chesapeake College, beyond the dollars, that make all the difference. Four hundred and forty-two students were supported by Foundation scholarships during the 2022-23 academic year, representing 34 different degrees and work-ready credentials. Many of our scholarships support students in the health professions, the skilled trades, and also those taking “general education” courses with plans to transfer to a four-year institution. The Foundation accepted gifts from 276 individuals and entities in FY23.

The money I saved because of the scholarship helps me pay for gas so I can get to college.”

My future plans: “I am currently studying welding hoping to get a job working in a boatyard in the town of Rock Hall. I have lived in Rock Hall my whole life and there is a big demand for welders in the area. So there is always work to be done.”

Zulema Delacruz Martinez Business Administration Degree, supported by the J.C. Gibson Memorial Scholarship “Receiving this scholarship was not only an enormous support for my family, but an honor as well. J.C. Gibson [a former college employee] was a man who supported disadvantaged students in any way he could. It is the legacy of people like him that motivates me to excel in my studies and fuels my desire to support my community.”

My future plans: “My future plans include finishing my associates and then transferring to a four-year institution to get my bachelor’s degree in business administration. My goal is to work either in higher education or in a non-profit organization setting.”

To my scholarship donor: “My mother has been a single parent for the majority of my life, and she works long hours to support our family. People like yourself are the reason why my mother tears up with relief when I tell her I was awarded a scholarship.

Not only is your thoughtful donation supporting my dreams and goals, but it is giving parents such as my mother enormous relief from financial stress. Thank you.”

To my scholarship donor: “The scholarship has helped me so much, and I would like to give thanks to everyone who helped me further my education.”

Katelyn Crouch, ‘23 Christian Phillips, ‘23 Liberal Arts and Sciences Degree, supported by the Presidential Honors Scholarship “Post-secondary education has always been a hurdle that I’ve sought to clear. Through receiving the Chesapeake College Presidential Honors Scholarship, that task was made tremendously more attainable. ” My future plans: “I am planning to attend Towson University for a bachelor’s degree in computer science. My expected graduation date for Towson is spring 2025, after which I plan to pursue a career in the computer science field. “ To my scholarship donor: “Being a recipient of the Presidential Honors Scholarship has greatly assisted me in my academic endeavors. Having the opportunity to focus on my major and my future plans has allowed me to succeed at Chesapeake. Without the scholarship this road would have been significantly more difficult, and for the assistance I have received I have nothing but gratitude. “ 12

Applied Science Degree - Physical Therapist Assistant, supported by the Auxiliary of Easton Memorial Hospital Scholarship Fund “Only seven students from Chesapeake College are chosen to be in this program, so I’m very thankful to have been one of them. I’ve been treating patients from pediatrics, to Parkinson’s, vestibular conditions, and everything in between – you wouldn’t believe it! Because of this scholarship, I was able to take a step back from my job and focus on my studies.”

My future plans: To become a fully licensed, practicing PTA To my scholarship donor: “I’m so thankful for your generous donation, and I know my future patients will thank you too. I’ve been able to spend more time dedicating myself to my education and not worrying about financial insecurity. I cannot express how thankful I am for this scholarship. Thank you so much for your donation; it really means a lot to me, and other students here at Chesapeake that received the same.”

Growing T.R.E.E.S. John DeLuca is a tireless supporter of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) students. His Chesapeake College Foundation fund—the Training, Recruitment, Education, Employment, and Support (T.R.E.E.S.) Scholarship—exclusively supports students in this program with the funds needed for tuition, fees, books, scrubs, and shoes.

Rarely one to miss an opportunity to meet students, Mr. DeLuca is seen here giving a thumbs up to the audience at Chesapeake College’s 2023 Noncredit Healthcare Graduation ceremony.

Through the generous gifts of Mr. DeLuca and others, the T.R.E.E.S. scholarship has graduated 58 Eastern Shore students in the CNA program since 2016.

John’s inspiration? His beloved wife Irene, who resided in a local long-term care facility at the end of her life.

“The mission was to make a difference in the lives of those we touched with compassion, caring, dignity, respect, and love through T.R.E.E.S.” 14

To-date, more than $131,000 has been donated to the T.R.E.E.S. Scholarship fund. T.R.E.E.S. fund creator John DeLuca is the former owner of Delco Packaging Company and is still quite the salesman.

Mr. DeLuca personally solicits gifts from friends, family, and acquaintances he meets in the region.

“If we as advocates can help provide an opportunity for someone to improve themselves, to upgrade themselves, it’s just the right thing to do,” he says.

“ The Road Less Traveled

Transportation for many students in our region is an issue. I am thrilled that my students can now stay right here...

”

Retired Eastern Shore dentist and long-time Chesapeake College Dental Assistant Program Instructor Jean Carlson, DDS, identified a need in the College’s dental assistant lab in 2022.

“The equipment in the lab was in place to take dental X-rays, but the technology wasn’t there for students to actually use it. Students were having to travel all over the region to get their clinical hours in the technology.”

Dr. Carlson, through the Chesapeake College Foundation, reached out to several of her former colleagues in the local dental community, encouraging them to make a gift to support this initiative. And together—with grant funds from the State of Maryland—these 16

local dentists helped to purchase a laptop and the software necessary to make the lab’s dental x-ray equipment operable for students beginning in the spring of 2023.

A generous donor herself, Dr. Carlson was happy to contribute in this way to the students she teaches. “Transportation for many students in our region is an issue. I am thrilled that my students can now stay right here in our lab to complete the hours needed and earn the certifications that will get them out and working in our local dental offices.”

From Across the Region and the Country: New Scholarship Gifts The Foundation welcomed three new funds in FY23 that supported specific student populations or degree programs: A past generous supporter of the College, Delmarva Power and its parent company Exelon gifted $5,000 in FY23 from their annual golf tournament to support Chesapeake College athletes in their studies here at the College. The College welcomes nearly 100 student athletes each year across six different sports.

In the fall of 2022, local foundation Not My Child gave a $5,000 gift to establish the Anthony Reno, Jr. Scholarship Fund. Not My Child was started by local businessman and father Anthony Reno, Sr. after losing his son, Anthony Jr., to an opioid overdose in 2017. The mission of Not My Child is “to save families from the heartbreak surrounding the opioid crisis and aid in developing meaningful success stories instead.” The scholarship will go towards educating students studying addictions counseling during the 2023-24 academic year.

Heather Pitz is a corporate lawyer for Northrop Grumman now on the West Coast, but she began her education at Chesapeake College, graduating in 1992. In FY23, Ms. Pitz donated $1,000, pairing it with a matching gift from the Northrop Grumman Foundation to create the annual Alex and John Pitz Scholarship Fund.

Ms. Pitz’s scholarship fund supports students in either credit or noncredit studies at Chesapeake College, with a preference given to single parents and those studying skilled trades.

Fueling Up for the Journey Anyone familiar with the famous psychological pyramid “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” knows that people cannot connect with others, build their self-esteem, or work to be the best they can be if their basic needs are not met. Chesapeake College’s “Corner of Care” is working to meet those needs with food, toiletries, school supplies, diapers, formula, and other essential items including gas gift cards.

Cheyenne Roache is the director of student engagement and development at the College.

“This year we worked to finalize a partnership with the Maryland Food Bank and worked to ensure a new and larger space was found and outfitted for our Corner of Care.”

“It has evolved into more than just a food pantry—it’s a crossroads for our community. The food pantry helps students fill up their gas tanks before driving to clinical sites and feed their families when they are in between paychecks. It provides basic household necessities for athletes living in off-campus housing, and it allows students coming from work to grab a quick meal before their evening classes.”

These are all real examples of how the Corner of Care can, for a moment, reduce stress for students and act as a place to lean on so they are better able to focus on their education at Chesapeake College.”

The Corner of Care has existed for many years. However, with the cost of items rising dramatically after the COVID-19 pandemic, the College has seen an increase in student usage. In FY23, the Foundation sought gifts to support those increased needs and our community rose to the occasion:

• Through the Mid-Shore Community Foundation’s 2022 “Mid-Shore Gives” campaign, more than 60 small-gift donors helped to raise over $3,300.

• The City of Cambridge gave a $1,000 gift for the Corner of Care.

• Local non-profit The Jacob Sloan Foundation gave $1,500 to support the Corner of Care.

• In addition to its annual gift for nursing scholarships, The Nathan Foundation gifted $3,000, to make sure that no matter where Dorchester students take classes they have access to the fuel needed to engage their minds.

College Employees Donate to Support 14 Campus Initiatives Every year the Chesapeake College Foundation launches its “Annual Internal Giving” campaign that solicits donations from Chesapeake College staff and faculty to support specific institutional initiatives and existing student scholarships. More than $12,000 was raised to support projects including the purchase of new artwork for the Cambridge Center’s Multi-Purpose Room, funds to support the new Latino Student Union’s launch, scrubs and books for Certified Nursing Assistant students, a Unity Fest for students and staff to teach everyone about multiculturalism, a celebratory dinner for TRiO program graduates and their families, and more.

Administrative Services at Chesapeake College Karen Smith gives every year to the Michael D. Kilgus Memorial Scholarship. Michael Kilgus was Ms. Smith’s supervisor, in the same position she currently holds at the College, until he passed away suddenly in 2013. An endowed scholarship was started in his memory.

Karen says, “Mike was an advocate for Maryland community colleges, having served at both Chesapeake College and Garrett College. During his time with us at Chesapeake, he was an exceptional leader, and his impact is still felt in the Administrative Services division ten years later. I am happy to donate to his scholarship to honor the work he did and the person he was.”

Another example of “crowd-sourcing” to fund a scholarship is the George W. Wilson, Jr. Esq. Scholarship Fund. This endowed scholarship was created in memory of Mr. Wilson, who was a Chesapeake College faculty member when he passed away in 2005. The first gift to the scholarship fund—$50.00—was given that year. Now, more than 18 years later, 806 gifts have been donated, adding a total of $57,000 towards the principal of the endowed fund. Many of these gifts were given by College employees over the years.

Many staff and faculty also chose to support the Foundation’s General Student Scholarship Fund or selected a specific scholarship that is meaningful to them. Vice President for
