Are you ready to win?

According to weather reports, in northern Texas, folks should be prepared to experience cooler weather, really soon.

Actually some forecasters mention “cold” weather.

Now, while I studied journalism, I don’t have the receipts to present myself as a weatherperson, meteorologist or even weather anchor.

However, I can tell you this — things are about to heat up in Texas!

Just this week, for instance, former United States Representative Beto O’Rourke announced that he is a candidate for Texas Governor and U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson says she will be making an important announcement this Saturday at Kirkwood Temple Gymnasium. Mr. O’Rourke, who also ran for Senate and the Presidency, will host a rally and town hall meeting at Paul Quinn College and a huge crowd is expected, many will also be candidates for various positions.

Folks are asking, “Can Beto beat Greg Abbott?”

Well, for sure he can’t if he doesn’t run!

They are also asking, “Is Congresswoman Johnson going to seek another term?”

The larger question is, are Democrats going to galvanize their forces and pool their resources to get out the vote!

And still there are other questions like: Can the pettiness of politics take a back seat to a concerted effort to turn Texas blue?

Guard Carlik Jones scored 34 points in the Legends’ 108-100 win over the Birmingham Squadron.

As he signed autographs after the game, the young fan caught his eye and he handed him a pair of shoes.

The Texas Legends are the NBA G-league affiliate to the Dallas Mavericks. They play in Frisco at the Comerica Center. The Legends are currently undefeated at 4-0 on the season.

Dr. Williams will serve as the fourth senior pastor of Pilgrim Rest. He was preceded by founder and inaugural pastor Rev. S. G. Gooden, Rev. G. B. Prince, Jr., and Pastor Emeritus Dr. Curtis W. Wallace.

The 86-year-old church has been a beacon of hope and a mainstay in the community, once known as “Short North Dallas”.

Dr. Williams, a native of Shelby County, AL, comes to Pilgrim Rest from The Historic Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN, where he served as senior pastor for eight years. He was selected to serve as senior pastor of Pilgrim Rest earlier this year and began leading the church in August.

Dr. Williams attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA but completed his Bachelor’s degree in Theology and Pastoral Ministry from the Birmingham-Easonian Baptist Bible College in Birmingham, AL. He also obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and a Master’s degree in Theological Studies from Faith International University and Seminary in Tacoma, WA. Pastor Williams enrolled as a Doctoral Student at Virginia University of Lynchburg, Virginia (HBCU) in 2018 and completed his Doctor of Ministry degree in 2021. Pastor Williams’ dissertation was “Equipping Informally Trained Christian Educators with the Principles of Biblical Exposition.”

Emancipation was a Stupendous Fraud!

By Vincent L. Hall For me, watching snippets of the Ahmaud Arbery court trial has been even more painful than the 12 seconds I saw of the George Floyd video. Police brutality, an offshoot of the slave catcher mentality that began 400 years ago, is unbearable.

However, the thought that any random set of white men can form an impromptu posse and declare “martial law” is unfathomable. Welcome to American History 101, the CRT edition.

Most Black people know just enough history to be dangerous. For example, we know that W.E.B. DuBois waxed eloquently about the “souls of black folk.’

A few of us even understand DuBois’ musings about our uniquely American consciousness.

I’ve witnessed several friends leave the faith. They have talked about the hypocrisy they experienced at the church.

One of my friends calls it ‘buffet Christianity’—when we pick and chose what sins we are willing to condemn and others we want forgiveness for.

I’m often stunned at how there are certain sins that we are so willing to call out and find scripture to quote to prove our point and yet, fail to see the shortcomings we have.

One of the sins that I’m guilty of along with so are many is gluttony. Gluttony is defined as “habitual greed or excess in eating.” I’ve used food at times to comfort me and in my pain, food can be the go-to instead of God.

Yet others can spit of few lines of King. We got the “I Have a Dream” speech down. Nevertheless, few comprehended MLK’s transparency relaying his fears of integration.

“We have fought hard and long for integration, as I believe we should have, and I know that we will win. But I've come to believe we're integrating into a burning house.” Ahmaud Arbery is a reminder that America’s house is a fiery furnace of the vilest and ugliest racism known to man.

All he did was walk into a vacant house!

Some of you get giddy every Emancipation Day; when you think of Frederick Douglass, you run to that familiar opening “What to the slave is your fourth of July?” That’s an excellent place to start, but to tether the murderers of Ahmaud Arbery to this moment; we should look a little deeper into Douglass’ writings.

Listen to an excerpt of his speech, “"I Denounce the SoCalled Emancipation as a Stupendous Fraud.”

“The love of power is one of the strongest traits in the Anglo-Saxon race. This love of power common to the white race has been nursed and strengthened at the South by slavery: accustomed during two hundred years to the unlimited possession and exercise of irresponsible power, the love of it has become stronger by habit.

To assume that this feeling of pride and power has died out and disappeared from the South is to assume a miracle. Any man who tells you that it has died out or has ceased to be exercised and made effective, tells you that which is untrue and in the nature of things could not be true. Not only is the love of power there, but a talent for its exercise has been fully developed.”

It must have been an exhilarating burst of power and privilege that caused a White father and son to chase down an unarmed Black man. That power also enticed the third wheel in this train of injustice to videotape the entire incident.

There is no doubt that White power was in full effect when the Glynn County Police Department weighed the bloody and lifeless body against the freedom of three self-deputized slave catchers.

160 years past the Emancipation Proclamation and it still remains a stupendous fraud. Not one of us is safe!

The Three G’s: Gluttony, Gossip and Greed Food can become our God, an idol. I’m stunned that as the body of Christ, we can call out those don’t live the way we do, but we don’t focus on issues like gluttony, greed, and murdering others with our tongues.

We host more church events that have fried food and sugar only to offer subsequent health fairs instead of addressing the root cause. We label gossip as just telling it like it is and sharing the truth---never mind how many reputations are destroyed.

We’ve pushed prosperity preaching without focusing on character, kindness, and helping others. It’s only about how much money we can make without realizing God wants your soul to prosper—and wants us to thrive in every area of our lives (3 John 2).

There are several scriptures that speak about those things

that we tend to not discuss in the church: Gluttony “Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame.

Their mind is set on earthly things.” (Philippians 3:19) “Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat.” (Proverbs 23:20) Gossip A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends. (Proverbs 16:28) Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. (Ephesians 4:29) Greed Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of pos-

sessions.” (Luke 12:15) No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

(Matthew 6:24) From my understanding, if we are going to call out others you better be prepared to look in the mirror and be honest about your faults and failures.

What’s causing so much chaos is the fact that we will not address those things that we think are small and yet, they can cause a separation from God’s plan for our lives and from those we interact with. Song of Solomon 2:15 says, “Catch the foxes for us, the little foxes that spoil the vineyards, for our vineyards are in blossom.”

It’s those little things that we ignore that can destroy the growth that God can provide

and give to us. “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.

But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.”

(James 1:23-25) It’s not a buffet to pick what you want to follow and condemn what isn’t your issue.

Let’s all take a look in our mirrors and pay attention to those little things that steal the life we’ve been promised.

Becoming a veteran was the way for me WHAT’S ON MILES’ MIND

By Miles Jaye Military service, the U.S. Air Force, was my way out of Brooklyn.

It was my ticket out, along with countless others who didn’t have the options of college or sports as an escape from the city and circumstances that lead to no happy endings. Ironically, I had a scholarship to Morgan State University and an acceptance to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Co-

lorado Springs, but mom could not wrap her mind around the idea of a free education. She still imagined bills arriving in the mail for room, board, clothing, and books-- things we could not afford.

To her credit, she had already sent my older sister and brother off to college. One more would be more than she could manage as a single mom. I get it! Poor has layers to it-it’s not as simple as missing meals.

I left for basic training in February of 1976. The recruiter rang the bell to our third-floor apartment early on the morning of the 18th and off I went to a new life, a new world. I don’t think my mom believed I would actually

I enlisted on my own in early November of ‘75 and once I celebrated my 18th birthday, I was of age, and on my way to basic training a few months later.

Apparently, unbeknownst to me, the family discussions had been about relocating me to Syracuse to live with dad while attending Syracuse University.

That might have actually worked out but for one major hitch-- dad wasn’t having it. He was entirely against the idea. Feeling rejected by both parents, I looked for the quickest way out. Who wants to feel unwanted… like a burden?

Not me! I wanted out, so off I went, angry at the world around me. Angry at my family, I was

determined to show them that I didn’t need them. That’s youthful hubris. Problems seem simple to adolescents-- they don’t love me. For the adolescent, solutions tend to escalate to the extreme… they don’t love me, so I’ll just leave, split, bounce.

Hubris of the young… that was me! Homelife was confusing. I was too young to appreciate or understand that mom was justifiably exhausted from raising three kids by herself in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. I couldn’t grasp how overwhelmed she must have been as a human being, struggling and persevering day after day. Not only did she send my older siblings off to college, sister graduating from Boston University, brother graduating from Drexel, but she provided me with orthodontic braces and violin lessons. To the adult me, mom was heroic.

I hated most of my five years in the military and I’m so glad I enlisted. I grew, I matured, I traveled the world, and learned to see

the world through eyes that have helped me navigate through the ups and downs of grown folks’ life challenges. My time in the Air Force gave me time to build an inner-core and outer-armor that allows me to sustain through challenges I encounter every day in the music business.

I have no doubt that I’m the man I am for having experienced the world in uniform. Whenever I visit a VA hospital or clinic, I know I’m part of a tradition, an American history, an African history, a world history, a Biblical history of soldiers. I’m also part of a family legacy. My son was an Army Captain. My daughter is a member of a military sorority. Search the heart and soul of a veteran, young or old, male or female, and you’ll find the essence, the prevailing spirit… is service.

I learned that this lesson was about deciding who you give respect, trust and honor and who receives it from you. It was about giving yourself the permission to grow, learn and bond with those who grown learn and bond for

your life lessons.

Throughout your life, you will meet people who will only care for you temporarily. There are people whose spirit will entwine with yours for a moment, then wither and walk away. We all know people who, under the guise of mutual engagement, will only take from you.

Big Mama said be very weary of fair-weather friends – she told me that those are people who all around you during your good times but are completely unavailable during your bad times.

Big Mama said they were “rough patch” absent.

The COVID-19 pandemic surely allowed us to see who our

fair-weather friends were. I am reminded of the very famous song penned by writers, McFadden and Whitehead, as sung by the O-Jays, called “Backstabbers.”

The song referred to those people who praise you in person and were poised to take what you have and undermine your progress when you are not in the room.

Big Mama never gave us a lesson without a bright light at the end of the tunnel. She said the good thing about temporary people is they cannot steal your joy without your permission. All of these temporary people and their eventual departures don't determine the worth of your life.

and the “Woke” moment caused our young BIPOCs to rise up as navigators of change just as Emmett Till's murder set off a wave of activism and resistance during the Civil Rights Movement in 1955, especially in the segregated South.

Floyd and Till's death exposed the longstanding violence against Black men and women. Yet, what also surfaced is that the activists of Till and the activists of Floyd are not collaborating at the optimum level.

The purveyors of institutionalized racism are benefiting from the fact that ‘young” activists are not engaging “older” activists.

Howard Protest Agreement Reached said the sources, who asked not to be named Sunday night.

Channing Hill, president of Howard University’s NAACP chapter, one of the student organizations leading the protest at Blackburn Center, acknowledged that an agreement had been reached.

“It’s over,” Hill said, declining to offer more details on the deal.

“We’re not allowed to speak on it,” said Hill, 20, a junior from Bedford, Tex. who is majoring in Strategic Legal and Management Communication. “There’s a confidentiality clause to the agreement.”

University officials could not be reached late Sunday via email for comment on the agreement.

The 33-day sit-in is the longest student protest in the history of Howard University, a college that has graduated some of the nation’s most prolific African American voices in politics and social justice, including former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young; former New York Mayor David Dinkins; L. Douglas Wilder, the first Black governor of Virginia; and Kasim Reed, the former mayor of Atlanta. Vice President Kamala Harris also is a Howard University graduate.

Students began the sit-in at Blackburn Center on Oct. 12,

complaining that mold was growing in dorm rooms at Howard, and that the campus had problems with rodents and insect infestation. Student leaders said their complaints to university administrators had fallen on deaf ears.

Hill said the appearance of Baraka on the campus may have played a pivotal role in this weekend’s agreement.

“We’ve had Rev. Jesse Jackson, we’ve had about six Congressmen, we’ve had Sen. Elizabeth Warren,” to no avail, Hill said. “Mayor Baraka had Dr. Frederick negotiating within minutes of his arrival.”

Baraka led a protest in 1989 against Howard, his alma mater, citing similar concerns.

Baraka, Hill and three other student protesters, Erica England, Jasmine Joof and Elishabeth Cunningham, met Saturday with Dr. Frederick and Evers, but Hill would not say what the two sides agreed to.

Protesting students previously said they believed university administrators would retaliate against them. They sought the amnesty agreement in an effort to prevent academic repercussions, such as a loss of scholarships.

“We are fearful from retaliation from our own school,” senior Erica England said in reference to an amnesty agreement with the University.

The agreement would calm the fears of England, other students and supporters.

educated thousands of young Black women and girls over the past decade was not enough, the Werthing/ Reynolds family and their institution, the Werthing Foundation, has even added a new chapter to their endeavors, while at the same time pulling triumphant conquest out of the jaws of tragedy.

The Werthing Foundation was established in 2010 by sisters Gloria Werthing Reynolds and Marvis Werthing Lloyd.

“We show young ladies how to light up the world for now and for the future,” said Gloria Werthing Reynolds. “We teach them to tell the truth and shape the framework for the future.”

On November 21, the Foundation will VIRTUALLY hold their second annual Light Up the World Mentorship Program Banquet which will feature special guest speakers from the corporate and community service communities, announce new scholarship recipients as well as extend honor and gratitude to the dedicated staff, volunteers and community partners that have helped make their work a staple in the communities they serve.

According to the Werthing Foundation website, the current count is over 3,000 girls mentored, 1,200 women empowered and over 3,600 male and females from 5th to 12th grade they have served successfully.

And apparently, they’re just getting warmed up.

The two sisters are not by any means resting on their laurels and in fact have tapped into new sources of motivation to take their count of young beneficiaries into the tens of thousands and beyond.

During the deep Jim Crow days of the South in the 1940s, they met at historically-Black Lane College in Jackson, Tenn. Both were chemistry majors, but as Gloria described, “they formed their own physical chemistry.”

After eventually marrying, the couple acquired their Bachelor’s Degrees in tendom at Lane College, then kept on stepping together to both attain their Master’s Degrees at Indiana University, after both were turned down by Vanderbilt University because of their race.

Early in their respective careers, John Sr. and Sallie transformed into fervent educators. John went on to become a school principal for 45 years while Sallie excelled as an 8th grade science teacher for 48 years (John Sr. died Aug. 13, at the age of

“I had a gap in my corporate world and I welcomed that gap,” she said. “I could not avoid my calling, making the transition first as an entrepreneur, then to the non-profit field and the forming of the Werthing Foundation. “I accepted that calling of family education and giving back.”

“It was important to see people who look like me accomplishing great things," said Felisha Burleson, a foster care alumnus, who went on to obtain a Master’s Degree in Sociology at Texas Woman’s University and has become the founder of The Patchwork Society, which provides youth services and professional development for young adults.

“I aspired to be like them. Granted, I could turn on the TV and see a few women of color doing good things, but in my mind, those were not ‘regular people.’ Seeing regular people go on to accomplish things provided me with hope and introduced me to a world of opportunities that I did not know were available.”

predominantly Black communities such as in South Dallas, Oak Cliff and parts of DeSoto.

They sought out the “young, gifted and Black,” that showed distinct needs of mentoring to counter the environment that could steer them in a negative direction.

“We went where the kids were; anything south of I-635, we were on top of it,” said Gloria. “We let them know that they would each have the opportunity to be successful if they followed the right leaders.”

The Werthing Foundation comes to a community equipped with every societal resource available – mentors, staff, volunteers, sponsorship and donations from corporations and other businesses, youth agencies, guest speakers, educators, internships, counselors, church leaders, etc. Programs implemented have included L.E.A.D. (Learn, Experience, Apply, Demonstrate), Girls’ Day, and Girl Power Academy.

Recently, however, a family tragedy shook the Werthing Foundation to its core and possibly challenged its role in the community.

On February 12, 2020, Gloria’s and Willie’s 30-year old daughter, Gabrielle Lamiah Reynolds, died from the effects of a blood clot.

The Reynolds family notes that Gabrielle’s death was not related at all to the COVID-19 pandemic, yet her untimely and sudden death simply devastated Gloria’s spirits.

“My world came crashing down,” Gloria said, adding that she could not stay in the doldrums. “I knew I had family and my parents and that I had to do something to get me out of bed every day.”

Thus, as Gloria stated, “before Gabrielle’s obituary came out,” she founded and started the Light Up the World Mentorship Program and Scholarship Fund. “It became my pain to passion project.”

The Light Up the World Program held their first banquet (All Virtual) on Nov. 22, 2020, Gabrielle’s birthday. This year’s event will also be virtual.

Consisting of a downline family (including cousins) that has obtained a total of 35 college degrees – ranging from undergraduate to master’s, Ph. D and medical degrees – and all from HBCUs – the Werthing/Reynolds family continues to stroke the power of education and giving back to forge a bright future for everyone.
