The History

In 1964 when two young secondary school teachers and university friends discussed the idea of an exchange between their respective schools, could they possibly imagine the unique piece of history that would endure 59 years?

Keen to apply the principles of inclusion and excellence in sport, Mr Ross Smith of Victoria and Mr. Jeff Nicholas of South Australia developed the exchange between Gilles Plains High School and Cheltenham High School. The Exchange aimed to challenge students to participate and work towards a higher level of skill in the name of their schools. The very first Exchange Coordinators hoped to broaden the education of their students beyond the classroom.

While there have been many changes throughout the years, the core purpose of The Exchange has stayed true. Gilles Plains may have changed its name to Windsor Gardens and then again to Avenues College but at its heart, it is still a school that values education. The Exchange events and activities continue to evolve over time, forgoing golf or cross country to make room for academic and artistic talents while maintaining the desired principle of inclusion.

The Exchange remains an experience that brings together students of all ages and cultural differences. It challenges students to develop their teamwork and leadership skills as well as their independent abilities, they will learn from independent growth and while doing so build strong relationships and connections with their peers. Above all, it's fun, exciting, noisy and renowned for being the highlight of a student's time at Cheltenham and Avenues Colleges.

2023 saw the return of the Exchange at Cheltenham Secondary College. It was a crazy, hectic week filled with lots of fun and plenty of emotion. The college was brimming with excitement as students attended events to support the Cheltenham Squad. This year, the 57th Exchange team will travel to South Australia to be hosted by Avenues College. It has been four years since a Cheltenham squad has crossed the border and the excitement is high.

We congratulate The Exchange Squad of 2024 and we hope that you appreciate what a privilege it is to be a member of the team and that you will honour the tradition, like those selected squad members who have gone before you.

I have my honour and reputation and those of my school at stake and I will behave as befits these commitments.

I will show respect, and consideration to my hosts and the students and staff from both schools.

I will compete in my events as well as I am able, in the best sporting interest and I will be gracious in victory and defeat.

I will meet all time commitments. will dress appropriately on all occasions and will be attentive to staff advice

I will support my fellow squad members during competition, by encouraging them and being mentally and physically fit.

I will do nothing to jeopardise the long running tradition of The Exchange and the high esteem in which it is held.

As you prepare to represent our college in the upcoming Exchange against The Avenues School in South Australia, we want to extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to each of you.

Since 1965, this annual event has fostered friendly rivalry and strengthened bonds across borders through spirited competition in diverse events ranging from badminton to debating and from music to basketball. Your selection to the team reflects your dedication, sportsmanship, and commitment to upholding our college values of Respect, Responsibility, Personal Best , and Sense of Community. We are confident that you will make us proud not only with your athletic, academic and artistic talents but also the true spirit of Cheltenham Secondary College. The Exchange is more than just a competition; it celebrates teamwork and the enduring bond between our students and schools.
