The education programme brings energy to the Festival weekdays, with hundreds of pupils buzzing around the site getting stuck into science, interacting with scientists, and honing their curiosity. So we are delighted to once again be the education and principal partner to The Times Cheltenham Science Festival. We are passionate about engaging young minds with science and engineering, which is why we continue to build on our rewarding partnership with the Education department at Cheltenham Festivals. Together we are embarking on an ambitious programme of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities that will take place all year round. The aim is to engage as many children and young people with STEM and the possibilities for a brilliant career in science and engineering. ‘Careering Around’ - careers guidance, but not as you know it - will get KS3 and 4 pupils thinking about the benefits of qualifications in science as they come face to face with STEM mentors in their schools in March and at the Festival in June. In December we will be delivering spectacular science shows to schools across the UK – including events in Gloucestershire, Somerset and Lancashire. We have devised a ‘Big Experiment’ with experts from Swansea University that schools anywhere can take part in during the run-up to the Festival. Over the past year EDF Energy have launched an ambitious programme to open visitor centres and tour routes for the public at our power stations and at this year’s Festival we will be bringing our new mobile visitor centre along to the Discover Zone. Come along to find out more about energy, more about power station tours and also our sustainable schools programme the Pod, which provides fantastic free resources for schools. The Cheltenham Science Festival is such an exciting event for us to be a part of and we hope you and your pupils can take part in one or many of the engaging activities in 2013. Welcome to Science for Schools 2013, another 4 days packed full of interactive educational events and workshops, as well as the very popular KS3 Day Packages, and the KS1 Mini Packages. There’s even the chance to get your hands on a Raspberry Pi! Prices remain competitive, and you can also book from a variety of free activities to make your visit even better value for money. A new development for this year is our ‘BUSary’ scheme, a small amount of funding that will help some schools to attend the Festival by subsidising the cost of their transport. We would not be able to put together such a vibrant programme without the support and encouragement of our education partner EDF Energy. We give wholehearted thanks to them, all our other supporters, and all the teachers who go the extra mile to bring their pupils face to face with real science. We look forward to seeing you in June.

Tell Me ALL About It Choose from a wide range of workshops and events to create your perfect day out. Complement your visit with a free session in the Discover Zone or the ExperiTent. If you have breaks in your itinerary, have a go at the Discovery Trail in Imperial Gardens. Alternatively, let us organise your day for you – book a Day Package for KS3 or a Mini Package for KS1 (see pages 8-9).
Workshops £6.50 p/p Our exciting hands-on workshops allow pupils to investigate a variety of science applications in curriculum-related contexts. Designed for class-sized groups, workshops last one hour.
Discover Zone
Free – in conjunction with an event or a workshop Explore the world of science in the Discover Zone, with interactive science and exhibits for all ages and enthusiastic presenters ready to answer all your questions. One-hour slots are available every day, but must be booked in advance and in conjunction with an event/workshop. Cyber Security Challenge UK are bringing a Code-Breaking Treasure Paper Trail to the Discover Zone. Aimed at KS2-3 students, we will have small prizes to give out to the daily winners and all entries will be entered into an end-of-week prize draw. Schools interested in finding out more about our future schools engagement programme should leave their contact details with one of the team.
Home Educators - we have programmed two workshops exclusively for you at 3pm on Wednesday 5th and Friday 7th June. See pages 12 and 16 for more details and prices.

Events

£5.50 p/p Events are hour-long science shows presented by top-notch science communicators. Taking place in our larger venues and accommodating audiences from 200-600, events make for a unique and interactive learning experience.
All week we’re running interactive activities about cutting-edge science and technology. Led by experienced University staff, these activities will allow pupils to learn scientific principles while using their creativity and problem solving skills. 50 minute slots are available Tuesday 4th-Thursday 6th June, but must be booked in advance and in conjunction with an event/workshop. How does a smart phone or iPad know you’ve touched it or that it’s moving? And how do they manage to display all those fab videos, games and pictures? With a little help from a monkey, Mark Lorch and Emma-Jane Alexander will give you a whistle stop, interactive, tour through the technology in a tablet computer. You’ll get to be a molecule in a LCD display and interact with the monkey. And then they’ll show you what all this has got to do with aliens and monsters coming to life in the movies. Dr. Mark Lorch is a chemist and Emma-Jane Alexander is a computer scientist. They’re both from the University of Hull. But they get let out into schools across Humberside and Yorkshire where they like to bring science and technology to life. 50 minute slots are available each hour from 10am-2pm and must be booked in advance.
ExperiTent Activity Power Cities! Suitable for KS2

What would happen if children took over your city? This interactive KS2 activity gives you the opportunity to control a city’s inner workings. In teams, you will be challenged with reducing the carbon emissions of tabletop model cities by introducing different technologies. From model wind turbines to hydrogen and solar panels to electric cars, you will see first-hand how cutting edge research can tackle climate change. Guided by a large team of science and engineering researchers from The Network of Energy Centres for Doctoral Training, this activity aims to broaden understanding of how we might close the energy gap through using a diverse energy mix. 50 minute slots are available each hour from 10am-2pm and must be booked in advance.

Dinosaurs What makes a dinosaur a dinosaur? Meet puppets from TimeZone’s travelling museum and find out that not all prehistoric creatures were dinosaurs. The puppets are jumbled from the trip to Cheltenham and they need your help to get them back to their families. But how can you tell who is a dinosaur and who isn’t? Can dinosaurs swim? Can dinosaurs fly? Do they come out of eggs? Learn about each animal’s special characteristics and get everyone back together again. Join Colin Pulham and Jenny Rodgers on a voyage to explore the weird and wonderful world of high pressure. Discover the effects of high pressure on living organisms at the bottom of the ocean and find out how rocks are formed on earth and other planets. Professor Colin Pulham holds a personal chair in high-pressure chemistry, is the Director of Teaching in the school of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh and is a member of the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions (CSEC). He has won many awards for public engagement since 1999. Dr Jenny Rodgers is the public engagement and outreach co-ordinator for the School of Chemistry, with a background in extreme conditions chemistry.

Comic books are filled with mutants; heroes and villains whose special abilities have a genetic origin. Genetics are the basis of all life on Earth, from bacteria to beasts. But what if we could re-write (or enhance) that basic building block? Could we one day use genetics to make us superhuman? Simon Watt asks these questions, looking at the biological basis to our fantasy fiction and perhaps showing that science is not so far off. Some of the best magicians are really chemists, masters of acids, flames, and explosions. See how a liquid can be boiling hot and freezing cold at the same time, how to make something disappear in a flash of light, and why oxygen is so vital to life, despite being so explosive. As if by magic, chemists put rockets into space, use invisible fire extinguishers and create colourful rainbows. But it’s not magic – it’s chemistry! Andrew Szydlo is a chemistry teacher at Highgate School in North London. He is an expert on the history of alchemy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He gives public lectures at schools, universities and the Royal Institution and is renowned for unusual and spectacular experiments and bursts of theatricality. He has appeared on a number of television programmes, the most recent of which was BBC3’s “Secrets of Everything” alongside Greg Foot.

You could meet a hissing cockroach, owls, snakes, spiders, a meerkat, or a pygmy hedgehog - to name just a few! As well as introducing you to the creatures, Ranger Stu will tell you all about their adaptations and the habitats they live in. Ranger Stu’s love of animals can be traced back to one of his first memories - cuddling a guinea pig at a farm as a 3 year old! Throughout his childhood Stu had a wide variety of animals including rodents, fish, frogs, and reptiles and he still shares his home with many pets. He joined AnimalMan Limited in 2007 and has been presenting shows since 2009. He has also made various television and radio appearances.

Having worked as both an electronic engineer and science teacher, Tom Ward combines his interests in science, technology and education by running Tech Camp, where he introduces children to topics as diverse as robotics, rockets, forensics and special effects. Tom also presents sessions to thousands of children and adults at The Science Museum for their Science Night and Lates events and has designed workshops for recent Maker Faires in Newcastle, New York and San Francisco, and the Abu Dhabi science festival.

How do you make a jelly baby sing when you squeeze him? With a Raspberry Pi of course! Explore the fascinating and fun world of computer science with Clive Beale. From writing your own games to a Twitter-controlled jelly baby choir, you will be amazed at what you can do with this credit card-sized computer. The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. The idea behind a tiny and cheap computer for kids came in 2006, when Eben Upton and his colleagues at the University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory, including Rob Mullins, Jack Lang and Alan Mycroft, became concerned about the year-on-year decline in the numbers and skills levels of the A Level students applying to read Computer Science in each academic year. Cambridge University’s Naked Scientists will take you on an interactive journey through the workings of your nervous system. Are you brave enough to be used as an experimental guinea pig and have your brainwaves read, or would you prefer to nominate a teacher to have their muscles activated electronically? Discover how your nerves send and receive information, and learn how to fool your senses into seeing and feeling things that aren’t really there. Hannah Critchlow is a neuroscientist with a background in neuropsychiatry. As an undergraduate she received three University prizes as Best Biologist, and during her PhD was awarded a Fellowship at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Hannah is now stripping down the brain with the award-winning BBC broadcast Naked Scientists. Using radio, on-line channels and live events she is designing, producing and presenting, an interactive multimedia experience with a focus on neuroscience.

Emergency!! An interactive session which brings the world of surgery to life for key stages 4 and 5. Come and meet the ambulance crew and operating team who put you back together after an emergency. Find out what you could do to help in such an emergency and what happens to patients as they are loaded into an ambulance and taken to the hospital. Such simulations are similar to those being used for training medical staff and give an excellent insight into the world of medicine and the careers of those who work within it.
LabOratory is the name of innovative bio-medical events that we hold throughout the year and we are delighted to be working with Professor Roger Kneebone from Imperial College, London, supported by the Wellcome Trust to deliver World of Surgery. Roger Kneebone trained first as a general and trauma surgeon, working both in the UK and in southern Africa. After finishing his specialist training, he decided to become a general practitioner. In 2003, Roger left his practice to join Imperial College London. In July 2011 he received a Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellowship Award and in 2012 was awarded a two year Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellowship.

Other Opportunities Young Scientists’ Day

Thanks to the kind support of Sharon Studer and Graham Beckett we are able to offer tickets at the subsided cost of £10 per pupil If you have Y5 or 6 pupils with a keen aptitude for science, who would love to spend a day getting stuck into hands-on science activities alongside like-minded individuals, then the Young Scientists’ Day (YSD) is right up your street. The day is devised with teachers in mind as well as pupils, and the activities are delivered by the science team at Cheltenham College Junior School in the dedicated science rooms there. Wheels in Motion: Back by popular demand! Using recycled materials pupils will build their own vehicle which they will power with compressed air. The challenge will focus on distance and direction travelled whilst at the same time controlling the release of compressed air in order to keep their vehicle on the ground. The Big Bang: Get hands-on testing gases in the labs with Mrs ‘Flammable’ Flanagan. Be excited and amazed by flaming torches, exploding hydrogen balloons and much more. All safety equipment will be provided. Animation: Based in the ICT suite pupils will create their own animated movies on a scientific topic of the moment. No previous animation experience necessary! Lunch and refreshments are included.

Hosted by Cheltenham Ladies’ College, the KS3 Girls’ Day is a wonderful opportunity for Y8 and 9 girls to spend a day getting stuck into science and engineering. This year’s activities will be led by Dave Porter from the L’Oreal Young Scientist Centre and a team from GE Aviation’s GirlsGetSET. L’Oreal Activity - Girls will get to experience what it’s like work in a forensics lab by investigating a fictional crime scene scenario. They will evaluate the crime scene and suspect DNA samples using modern molecular biological techniques including restriction digests and gel electrophoresis. They will compare the bands formed on the gels to identify the criminal. Students will learn how scientists would approach a crime scene situation and how to pour and load gels, a process that many students do not have practical exposure to before attending university. This workshop is a great introduction to genetics and forensic analysis! GirlsGetSET Activity - GirlsGetSET is a scheme set up by female engineers at GE Aviation to show girls the fun and exciting world of Engineering. Girls will work in teams to develop a solution to an engineering problem, involving developing and integrating power systems with propellers. Girls involved will need to utilise their quick-thinking and teamwork skills to come up with a solution for a prototype aircraft design, combining understanding of various aircraft technologies with creativity. As with all aircraft development, time is critical and girls will need to think on their feet! We are inviting you to put forward 5 girls (Year 8 or 9) to take part in the day. You may accompany them if you wish, but this is not mandatory. Lunch and refreshments are included. CLC staff are accustomed to hosting activities and looking after pupils from other schools; they will undertake a full risk assessment.
What about the weekend? There are plenty of opportunities for children and families to get stuck into science on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June both at the Science Festival and at the NHS Sandford Education Centre, Keynsham Road, Cheltenham (opposite the Lido, next door to the Fire Station). The Sandford Education Centre are running ticketed workshops for over 12s and a free Have-a-Go Healthcare Science Zone for over 6s. Please let your pupils know about this healthcare science event which will inspire, motivate – and be great fun! Is there anywhere to park? Where should our minibus/coach pull up? There is plenty of on-street metered parking for minibuses around the Town Hall in Imperial Square, but the area will be busy, so please allow plenty of time to find a space. There are also several public car parks within a few minutes walk of the Town Hall. Coaches should arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before the start of your first activity. Coaches can pull up at the front of Cheltenham Town Hall (GL50 1QA) for disembarkation but must then move on and wait at a dedicated coach parking area until pick-up time. Home Educators Thank you to the Home Educators who gave us feedback after visiting the Festival last year; we hope you will find this year’s brochure easier to navigate. You will see that 3pm workshops are reserved specifically for you, but be aware that we need a minimum booking of 10 places for these to be viable. Please book using the online booking form, and a member of the Education Team will contact you to confirm your booking and to arrange payment.
I haven’t been to the Festival before; how well organised is it? We think that it is very well organised and from our feedback, our visiting schools think so too! Festival staff will meet and greet you when you arrive at Cheltenham Town Hall, and then escort you to your first event/workshop. All the venues are easily accessible. Festival staff will help seat your group and are always available to deal with queries and give assistance. On occasion, the number of schools arriving/leaving at the same time makes it difficult for coaches to pull up for disembarkation, or to get away once full. We do our best to make this as painless as possible.
We want to bring packed lunches with us; is there anywhere to eat them? Lots of schools spend a day at the Festival and bring lunch with them. There are large gardens behind Cheltenham Town Hall, with plenty of space for children to relax and enjoy themselves. In case of rain, we have some cover to keep you dry!
