Journeys of Discovery is our 2011 Festival theme and we’ll be celebrating fascinating journeys of all kinds, from the centenary of Scott’s race to the pole to inspirational modern adventurers and classic literary travels. We’ll also be considering spiritual journeys and intellectual discoveries, charting great historic voyages and asking where the future might lead us, and even continuing our own journey as a Literature Festival with our expansion to Montpellier Gardens. My favourite literary journey … is Robert Louis Stevenson’s Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes and I actually followed his route through Southern France for three weeks when I was ten, albeit without a donkey! The ‘journeys’ event I’m really looking forward to is … our exploration of Edgelands, a luminous and poetic journey by Michael Symmonds Roberts and Paul Farley through Britain’s forgotten wastelands at the peripheries of our cities, revealing their hidden beauties and startling secrets. My greatest journey … was when I travelled across southern India on my own. Being alone, I met some extraordinary women who welcomed me into their homes and gave me an amazing insight into the reality of life in India. My favourite book to take on a journey … would be Waterlog by the late great Roger Deakin, who swam across Britain through river, lake, estuary and sea. This book is a bible for wild swimmers everywhere and will feature in our wild swimming event at the Festival.

A L Kennedy: writer and standup comedian We’re bringing literature to life and we’ve got a terrific Guest Director to help us do it. She’ll be doing a brilliant one-off event with Music Festival favourite James Rhodes, delving into the paranormal with the Science Festival’s Richard Wiseman, and looking at protest and protest songs with comedian and activist Mark Thomas. My greatest journey … has been my year in Latin America. I was 18, fresh out of school and had the time of my life. The adventurer that inspires me … is Ernest Shackleton. His tale of hardship, endurance and perseverance is inspiring, moving and heroic. The adventure I’d love to do … is climb Everest - I would have to get permission from my wife though!

I’m an accidental adventurer … because I never planned to do the things I do - they just sort of happened and evolved.

The thing I enjoyed most about my last visit to the Literature Festival … was being there with James Cracknell, my adventuring partner. We always enjoy recounting our tales together.

My favourite piece of adventure writing … is Thor Heyerdahl’s The Kon-Tiki - an incredible journey beautifully told.

DIRECTOR’S PICKS… With over 500 events to choose from, where do you start? It isn’t easy, but Festival Artistic Director Sarah Smyth picks her ones not to miss. For a closer look… We’re heading back to the Edwardian age and not only looking at the literature and history of the time, but immersing ourselves in the dress, food, architecture and art as well. From our food historian recreating the extravagance of the Edwardian dessert trolley, to our brilliant event on the suffragettes and Penelope Keith on pioneering Edwardian women drivers, we’ll be diving head-first into a period of political turbulence and aristocratic glamour before the First World War shattered it forever.

To discover a hidden gem… Meet intrepid equestriennes Louella Hanbury-Tenison and Christina Dodwell as they join explorer Robin Hanbury-Tenison to share stories of their intrepid horseback adventures across the globe.

For a great night out… There’s so much Live Literature going on this year, with live poetry, cabaret and comedy. We’re staging a fabulous burlesque evening featuring a French supper, burlesque dancing and even life drawing to bring to life the graphic novel of the life of Kiki de Montparnasse, Man Ray’s celebrated muse and 1920s Parisienne girl. It’s a real departure for us and not to be missed!

For a different point of view… We’re still reaping the whirlwind of the financial crisis; as cuts begin to bite come and hear some of the country’s top economic minds - including Alistair Darling, Will Hutton, Paul Mason and John Kay.
