Welcome to Cheltenham Music Festival …around town – a weekend of free events on 9 and 10 July wrapped up with our beautiful, surprising Piano Trail.

Alongside a massive range of live music at our two free stages in Imperial Gardens and Cambray Place, the Music Festival is taking to the streets with pop-up performances, circus-style musical entertainment – and even the riot of exoticism and colour from roving, chanting, dancing Tibetan monks. Add to that musical table tennis matches, a roaming piano bicycle, local folk hero Johnny Coppin and the thrill of flamenco… and this is the Music Festival like you’ve never seen or heard it before.

Don’t forget to look out for our Piano Trail – artfully transformed upright pianos alongside specially designed keyboard-related inventions. Follow the map to find a synth-harp made out of aircraft landing gear, an interactive musical Fruit Machine, a piano that’s a garden or a bookshelf – all dotted around the streets and shops of Cheltenham. Prepare to be surprised and delighted!

The Mozart Question Narrated by Michael Morpurgo Sunday 10 July, 3pm Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Princess Hall Ages 7+ Author of War Horse Michael Morpurgo narrates from his beloved book The Mozart Question in a wonderful, music-filled event. This moving story of a worldfamous violinist in Vienna is a brilliant fusion of storytelling and live performance.

The Fairy Queen Sunday 17 July, 12.15pm Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Parabola Centre Ages 6+ Box Tale Soup puppet theatre group and members of The Sixteen perform a fun, interactive version of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream combined with Purcell’s music from The Fairy Queen.

James Mayhew’s Shakespeare Stories Saturday 16 July, 11am Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Princess Hall Ages 5+ Ella Bella Ballerina creator James Mayhew narrates and illustrates well-known Shakespeare tales, painting to live music from local pianist Alex Kirk.

Cheltenham Youth Choir With their inspiring conductor Rachel Bowen, the large numbers of children in Cheltenham Youth Choir – ranging in age from 4-18 – always make an impact with audiences. They have performed their wide range of music in venues such as Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucester Cathedral, the Roses Theatre and Cheltenham Racecourse.

The Grammar School Boys

The Grammatones The Grammatones is a close-harmony vocal group from Cheltenham’s Pates Grammar School. They come to us fresh from their performance at the Music For Youth finals in Birmingham.

We’re delighted to welcome 2016 Gloucestershire Young Musician of the Year Adam Heron, an extremely talented young pianist who is also taking part in the Cheltenham Music Festival Gloucesterhire Young Musicians concert at the Pittville Pump Room on Friday 15 July.

Johnny Coppin Cotswold folk music legend Johnny Coppin joins Cheltenham Youth Choir for two of his Gloucestershire Songs before performing a set of his own beautifully crafted numbers. He’ll be joined by Paul Burgess on violin and recorders.

Tibetan Monks

Formed in 2013 by local choir director Rachel Bowen, this lovely community choir boasts over 50 members who meet on a Monday evening to sing, to socialise and to laugh. The choir sings a wide range of musical styles but feels most at home singing ‘tunes we know’.

New members need no musical experience, only a willingness to give it a go.

Cheltenham Community Gamelan Players present a varied selection of traditional Javanese music and dance: refined court melodies, upbeat popular songs, and a vivacious welcome dance. The Wilson Gamelan Project is a ten-week collaborative workshop with young people, combining Indonesian percussion and electronic music. This performance showcases the pieces created during the project, led by Lee Chaos and Jonathan Roberts. Students from the National Star College will be performing interactive music on iPads, and encouraging audience members to have a go.

Bristol-based flamenco artist Amanda Frescura brings alive the drama and passion of this Spanish dance form, accompanied live by a vibrant blend of jazz, Latino and Arabic music.

Jess Gillam

The Grammar School Boys Formed of students from the Crypt Grammar School in Gloucester, all aged under 18 and originally members of Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra, this combo of sax, bass, drums and piano plays a lively range of instrumental jazz standards.

This Gloucestershire-based communityorientated Big Band was formed in 2011 of talented youngsters and enthusiastic adults, many of whom are also different generations of families.

Jess Gillam Seventeen-year-old Jess Gillam, from Cumbria, was the first ever saxophonist to reach the finals of BBC Young Musician this year. With a recent guest appearance with Jools Holland already under her belt, the confidence and joy of her stage presence is something to behold.

From 11.30am Saturday 9 July Fiddler on the rope! Kwabana Lindsay, star of Giffords Circus, will be bringing his slack-rope walking and musical equilibristics (that’s circus skills to the rest of us) street show to town.

Imperial Gardens Sunday 10 July 2.30pm Limited tickets are available from the Box Office for this workshop that allows you to try your hand at the ancient monastic arts of sand mandala making, butter sculpture and printing Tibetan prayer flags, led by the Monks of the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery.

Hailing from all across Eastern Europe as well as the UK, this amazing Balkan gypsy band has appeared on BBC Radio 3 and 6 Music and performed at WOMAD worldwide and Glastonbury festivals. Their next stop is Latitude in Suffolk.

‘They had everyone jumping for joy – a must see’ – Cerys Matthews.

Versatile Loose Tubes flautist and keyboard player Eddie Parker (you can hear him again tonight performing with the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble) leads this funky garden party with grooves from Herbie Hancock’s HeadHunters and more.

The Great Satie Sleepover

We will be hosting an overnight performance of Eric Satie’s mammoth Vexations for solo piano – one side of relatively simple piano music repeated 840 times, which lasts for over 20 hours.

If you would like to support well-known impressionist Alistair McGowan and our rota of professional pianists and local amateurs, bring along a sleeping bag and a flask of hot chocolate and we’ll see you there.

The Spirit of Jazz thrives in this energetic fourpiece band from Cheltenham and Stroud, led by Tommy Charles on piano and Dom Franks on sax. They join us for a toe-tapping performance of jazz standards, Latin and be-bop.

GYWO are one of the country’s leading youth wind bands, and in 2014 represented the county in the national Concert Band Festival finals at the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music. New members with Grade 6 and above and a firm commitment to the orchestra’s rehearsal and concert schedule are always welcome.

A glorious mixture of masked dance, sacred chants and a capella mountain singing meets ringing bells, clashing cymbals and beating drums, as the Buddhist monks bring us a flavour of the music of their Tibetan homeland. A guaranteed feast for the ears and the eyes.

Stolen Chocolates is a jazz group who focus on playing great music and spreading the joy throughout Gloucestershire.

Keep an eye out for our roving street performers, who will be roaming the streets of Cheltenham with their own brand of festival madness, and for the colourful Tibetan Monks, who will be putting in regular appearances.

Tewkesbury Town Band was formed in 1838 of local musicians, and is made up of over 30 members of the local community, from schoolchildren upwards, and performs mainly around Gloucestershire, alongside its occasional tours at home and overseas.

Pop-up Performances

Part of Gloucestershire Music, the Trombone Ninjas are a group of students who combine trombones and percussion in a riot of noise, led

by Steve Legge.

The Cheltenham-based Lakeside Concert Band is made up of adult wind and brass players who either have not played for many years, or who have taken part in the Learn As You Play scheme. The band provides a welcoming, fun environment in which to develop their skills, and is always happy to consider new members.

Rimski’s Piano Saturday 9 / Sunday 10 July Rimski’s Piano is an act based around a unique ‘bicycle piano’. Master multi-tasker Rimski plays and sings as he cycles along on his piano. His multi-functional contraption is full of surprises.

Featuring original songs, musical clowning, acrobatics and occasional pyrotechnics, this one-off act is a firm festival favourite.

The Rig Saturday MAKE SOME NOISE! Come and explore the sonic secrets of The Rig. Catch this fun and interactive installation of musical curiosities for all ages and physical abilities on the High Street between 12pm and 4pm on Saturday 9 July.

Sport meets music in this series of free performances and workshops, using a specially created film, a string quartet, a bicycle and table tennis players. There’s also a new interactive cricket-related piece. A fun event for all ages, with music composed by Nick Fell, Joe Cutler and Andy Ingamells.
