LAURA MVULA: ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Laura Mvula made a big impression in 2013, not just on the international music scene but also on Cheltenham. After wowing a packed Arena at last year’s Jazz Festival, she went on to be nominated for multiple industry awards, clinching two MOBOs. 2014 looks like it’s only going to get better for the 27 year old, having already been nominated for two Brit Awards. This year, we are thrilled to welcome her back to Cheltenham as Artist in Residence, headlining the Big Top on Thursday 1 May. Laura will also guest in an exclusive gig with her pick for 2014 ESKA on Friday 2 May, and will be hanging out with us in Montpellier Gardens soaking up the Festival atmosphere over the Bank Holiday weekend.

HOW TO GET GIGS JT09 2.30 – 3.30pm £6 With over 50 years’ experience as a respected jazz promoter, the Festival’s Programme Advisor Tony Dudley-Evans is perfectly placed to advise musicians. From making an approach to negotiating a fee, this is a valuable session for anyone trying to get their band a gig.
THE STORY OF BRITISH JAZZ FESTIVALS JT10 5 – 6pm £6 Professor George McKay (AHRC Leadership Fellow) leads a panel of festival organisers and researchers, including the Festival’s Programme Advisor Tony Dudley-Evans, as they trace the memories and significance of Britain’s jazz festivals, from their riotous origins at Beaulieu Jazz Festival in 1956 to today’s diverse festival scene.
