CHELTENHAM FESTIVALS THE NEXT 10 YEARS

This marks the beginning of a new era for Cheltenham Festivals, one in which the Festivals will depend on unprecedented support from philanthropists and sponsors. New relationships will need to be forged and existing partnerships enhanced. To run the four Festivals now costs nearly £5 million per annum. This year our Arts Council grant is 5% of our income and support from the Borough Council 3%. Our dependence on fundraising and sponsorship income between now and the end of next year will be £2.3 million. By early Spring, we will need to have secured a large proportion of this fund to safeguard next year’s programme. From what I have seen of the quality of Festival programmes and enthusiasm of audiences for our work, I think we should be capable of meeting the increased fundraising targets year on year. The tax benefits for individual donors are now very favourable.

I regard it as a privilege to lead and support an organisation that is such a major part of the national cultural fabric of this country, and one that enriches the lives of so many people. I hope your values chime with ours and that you will want to play a part in the future of Cheltenham Festivals. The success of the next 10 years will depend on our securing your help. WHAT WE NEED TO FUND Overall our ambition is to increase our national and international profile drawing audiences from across the world to Cheltenham. Through the Festivals we wish Cheltenham to be a place to visit for intellectual refreshment. Below is snapshot of the activities we need help to fund. STAFFING In order to deliver our long-term business plan, there are a number of key posts across the organisation that we need to fund particularly in the Science and Literature Festivals, and in Development and Philanthropy. The right people in these posts will deliver substantial improvements in our performance in 2013 and beyond. We aim to raise funds to support the initial cost of these posts for the first 3 years.

INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENTS Our new box office, Tessitura, provided by our subsidiary Cheltenham Productions and launched in the Spring of 2011, has transformed our marketing and fundraising potential and our whole interaction with our customers. However, the first three years of fees charged to Cheltenham Festivals are challenging and help to fund these would be of enormous benefit to the Festivals. In the longer term, we will need to replace our computer system which is currently provided by the Borough Council as part of the in-kind support. EDUCATION PROGRAMME Our Education work is much in demand and we provide schools and family events for more than 25,000 young people. We are currently consulting on our 5-year strategic Education plan and can see opportunities to roll-out certain of our Education Programmes on a regional and possibly national basis. We are now

seeking funding for three years, for a full-time Schools Liaison Officer, to support our Education Manager. In addition we have annual rolling Education Projects including Bandwagon and Dickens Revisited for which we are seeking support. As public engagement is so important to us, we also wish to expand FameLab, the competition for science communicators, into the other Festivals, under the brand of ‘Musicate’. Funding required for our Education work over three years will be in the order of £300,000 - £500,000, depending on which projects are finally developed. FESTIVAL EVENTS The better and more interesting our programme, the better our box office takings, and the better our future fundraising and sponsorship income is. However, we do not have sufficient reserves to take risks or to resource major, long-term programme developments and rely on donors and sponsors to do this. We are currently seeking support for a number of unique collaborations between artists and we wish to develop our cross-festival work. We would also like to be able to commit to more international collaborations and to securing high-profile Guest Directors. Furthermore, we are committed to developing the careers of young performers in all Festivals.

Our total artists’costs for the Festivals is £1.2 million per annum and our aim is to secure individual or corporate support for much of this cost. It is hugely rewarding for a donor to be involved in seeing a performance come together or to watch the development of a young performer. We are committed to engaging the public and wish to establish an award at each Festival for artists who communicate well with the public. DIGITAL DEVELOPMENT By capturing more of our content in digital format we will be able to take our Festival experience to many more people who can not travel to Cheltenham. We have ambitious plans under development to create a virtual Festival experience. THE SCIENCE FESTIVAL The Science Festival is well placed to increase the national role it plays in the public engagement of Science and we already work with leading universities. We are currently formulating plans on our future role in training science communicators and increasing the interface between scientists and the public.

CHELTENHAM FESTIVALS Many people have contributed, over more than 65 years, to create the organisation of Cheltenham Festivals and the outstanding experience it provides. Bold and courageous decisions have been taken to ensure our development as one of the most dynamic cultural organisations in the country, with a breadth and depth of programming that is truly awe-inspiring. The presence of a Science Festival in the midst of an arts organisation has provided a new dimension and an opportunity for creative collaboration between Festivals that has been much welcomed by audiences and performers. The Festivals are an intricate and carefully created pattern of high art, science and brilliant entertainment. They provide an intellectual playground for those willing to embark on the adventure. They allow you to enter unknown territory, challenge your most

profound beliefs and influence your direction of travel when you return to the everyday. It is important that access to high quality culture is available not just for those living in big cities. Our international connections are also growing through partnerships with overseas organisations and increasing numbers of international performers. The science competition, FameLab, is now run in more than 20 countries including Israel and Bulgaria.

We want to contribute to creating a fairer and more equal society and believe we can do so. To appreciate classical music, jazz, science and great writing, children need to establish the habit at an early age. We will continue to make available the Cheltenham Festival experience to as wide an audience as possible, irrespective of social background or economic status. Our concentration of venues in the centre of Cheltenham creates a wonderfully stimulating atmosphere and, most importantly, provides the opportunity for our audiences to engage with the experts, and the experts to exchange ideas with each other. The Cheltenham “Green Room experience is one of the key attractions for performers coming to Cheltenham and contributes to the creative energy of a Festival. The new layout for 2011 using both central gardens will give us the opportunity to expand capacity for our audiences. We will continue to develop distinctive programming that is strong enough to attract audiences from across the country and overseas. Our mission is to improve the way we engage audiences in our programmes through debate and discussion.

"Exub festiv erant yields al pure g old" Already considered one of the leading Jazz Festivals in Europe Cheltenham Jazz Festival has ambitions to become a major date in the UK’s broader music and social calendar, while remaining true to its mission of taking jazz to a wider audience. 2012 sees ambitious new developments with a proposed move to Montpellier Gardens for the festival to reach its potential with a new Jazz on the Square site bringing with it a 1600 seater, several other outdoor and indoor venues and a cinema, where the festival celebrates jazz on film. The Festival continues to produce unique one off shows and are looking for supporters to help to commission Paloma Faith & Guy Barker Orchestra Part II. In a broader role Paloma attends as an artist in residence, Jamie Cullum brings his flavours to the festival and the best in US, European and UK jazz are represented young and old. Help us continue to deliver the biggest names in the business in a beautiful unique setting for an international festival.

“The stan gold for s dard fest cience ivals ” In just ten years Cheltenham Science Festival has established itself as the top event in the UK’s public science calendar, and requests for advice from governments and organisations across the world demonstrate a growing global influence. The festival’s unique celebratory atmosphere – in which scientists and the public meet, discuss and debate the very latest research and where children find such inspiration – is cherished by many, and we want to make that accessible to a much wider audience, both onsite and online. We are also committed to sharing best practice in public engagement with science and developing young talent, particularly with our training programmes to find and nurture young scientists and engineers who are skilled at communicating with non-specialists. Our flagship FameLab competition will, in partnership with the British Council, take place in 20 countries in 2012, with many more set to follow.

"The bar set has beeneed" high ind If you’re a top-rank classical musician - from anywhere in the world – and you haven’t performed at the Cheltenham Music Festival, it’s on your to-do list. And if you already have, you definitely want to come back. Cheltenham is a byword for being classy, vibrant and imaginative, and for having venues stunningly well suited to the widest range of classical music. The 2012 programme will continue making large strides in creating a music festival fit for the 21st century – one that embraces family audiences as much as the aficionados, one that is as broadly entertaining as it is artistically adventurous. British music will be at the heart of the programme in 2012, because just days before the London Olympics start, it seems completely right to celebrate music from our own shores. In particular there’ll be British music that’s engaged with cultures from around the world. But we’ll finish with an orchestral celebration of London, and as it’s going to be quite long, we’re calling it A London Marathon!

"Tre book ats for wha worm, every t you ever fla favo v ur!" our There is so much more to Cheltenham Literature Festival than you might expect. Not just the oldest event of its kind in the world, Cheltenham remains at the cutting edge of contemporary literature, presenting a fresh take on the writing of the day and exploring the burning questions of our age. In 2011 we are creating a new Festival Quarter in the heart of Cheltenham and inviting our audiences to immerse themselves in the Festival experience. From the unique perspectives of our Guest Directors to the uninhibited creativity of our children’s programme, we celebrate the written word in all its forms and open the door to a wealth of literary adventures.

EDUCATION

The Education team continues to devise and deliver a packed, exciting programme of events and activities for schools and other groups, working alongside all four Cheltenham Festivals. Outreach projects frequently culminate in a performance or an exhibition at the relevant Festival. Here are snapshots of just a couple of our current projects. Admixture is the Literature Festival element of LabOratory, the cross-festival project funded by the Wellcome Trust. This fascinating project investigates genetic inheritance via the medium of a unique book created by artist Joshua Sofaer. Armed with copies of the book to give away, young people from Gloucestershire senior schools will engage festival-goers in conversation about their ancestry and the history of human migration. Bandwagon is an inspiring, vibrant and exciting experience of classical music and jazz for primary school pupils. An ensemble of A-level musicians, led by conductor William Carslake and other top-flight music educators, brings music

to life in Gloucestershire schools through 'flashmob' performances and creative workshops with selected groups of pupils. The workshops culminate in a creative musical show for the rest of the school and parents. Our future plan is to deliver ambitious and challenging project work that fulfils a defined need, not just in the local area but also further afield, offering participants the chance to work with the very best animateurs, authors and musicians. We can only do this with your support, enabling us to keep costs low so that these incredible and life-changing opportunities are accessible to everyone.

HOW YOU CAN HELP Many people remark how Cheltenham Festivals has changed over the past few years and we have clearly demonstrated our ability to deliver Festivals of an international standard. We now need to complete that journey by creating a finely-tuned organisation that is sustainable through ticket sales and fundraising. To achieve the improvements we will need requires further investment in staffing, programming and infrastructure and we need your help to do this.

RECOGNISING YOUR SUPPORT Major gifts to Cheltenham Festivals transform the impact we can make and can transform the lives of performers and young people.

There are a number of ways in which you can provide support for Cheltenham Festivals and we are committed to this being a really rewarding experience for you in which you become as closely engaged with the Festivals, as you want to.

With an increasing number of major donors and high-level corporate supporters, we felt it right to recognise those organisations and individuals who give the organisation more than £50,000 per annum and have recently established the Chairman’s Circle to do this. Our supporters include leading companies, charitable trusts and individuals across the Festivals.

BECOME A LIFE PATRON There are a number of tiers of support in our Patrons’ Scheme including Platinum and Gold. At the top are Life Patrons who are among our most generous and committed donors. Life Patrons are supporters who make a gift of £25,000 and have at times made a critical difference to the organisation by enabling a substantial improvement to our resources.

SUPPORTING A FESTIVAL EVENT OR EDUCATION PROJECT Each Festival has a range of projects and events which are available to support either as a corporate supporter or an individual.

JOINING THE LEONORA SOCIETY The Leonora Society is for those supporters who wish to leave Cheltenham Festivals a bequest in their will and have informed us of their plans. In this way, we can recognise their support whilst they are alive. For those who wish to leave a gift to a charity in their will, its value will not be included when valuing their estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.

SPONSORING A BESPOKE CORPORATE PACKAGE We can devise corporate packages to suit your company’s individual needs.

TAX BENEFITS The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt, is committed to ensuring that a new generation of supporters and philanthropists is created for Arts and Culture. He wishes tax benefits for those supporting cultural organisations to be as favourable as possible. For example, a donation of £100,000 would enable Cheltenham Festivals to claim an additional £25,000 in Gift Aid resulting in a total donation value of £125,000. For those paying tax at the higher rate of 50%, the tax relief would be £37,500 resulting in an effective payment of £62,500. Similarly, a donation of £25,000 would enable Cheltenham Festivals to claim an additional £6,250 in Gift Aid resulting in a total donation value of £31,250. For those paying tax at the higher rate of 50%, the tax relief would be £9,375 resulting in an effective payment of £15,625.

OUR FUTURE Cheltenham Festivals is an amazing organisation which receives brilliant feed-back from audiences, supporters and performers. Our current supporters are impressed with what we have been able to achieve with their investment.
