WELCOME Welcome to the 2011 Book It! for Schools programme I have really enjoyed putting together our fantastic programme for 2011 and hope you will find something here to wow and excite your pupils, from the magic of poetry to the thrill of seeing illustrations come to life in front of your eyes.

This year we welcome back festival favourite Julia Donaldson, who has just been announced as the new Children’s Laureate for 2011 – 2013.

Julia will get everyone singing and acting out her stories. Another favourite, James Mayhew, will bring the history of art to life through the eyes of Katie, who climbs through picture frames and into adventures.

You can take a pencil for a walk with brilliant illustrator Bruce Ingman, and hear all about how Ian Whybrow gets his ideas for his Harry and the Dinosaur and brand new Meercat Madness stories.

For poetry lovers we are extremely lucky to welcome Roger McGough who will be telling you amazing poems and drawing live on stage, and don’t miss the opportunity to create your own poem in a workshop with poet James Carter. There will no doubt be plenty of laughs in Kaye Umansky and John Dougherty’s high-energy events. And we are delighted to welcome back Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell of Edge Chronicle fame, Philip Reeve, master of the inventive Mortal Engines series, and to introduce Francesca Simon who will tell you about her brand new adventure inspired by her love of Norse mythology.

Linking in with KS2/3 history, we have devised a World War 2 day, which features an illustrated talk and workshops from the Anne Frank Trust along with a highly interactive session with WW2 historian James Holland.

Finally we are thrilled to welcome prize-winning and thought-provoking author Malorie Blackman, and adult author Simon Scarrow whose first book for young people Gladiator: Fight for Freedom is as exciting as they come.

FAQs I am thinking of bringing children from my school to the Book It! For Schools programme; how do I go about making a booking?

It’s simple! Just use our online booking form. All bookings are handled by the Education team at Cheltenham Festivals. If an event is sold out, we can advise you about other events which your pupils might enjoy. online booking form: www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/bookit-schools. email education@cheltenhamfestivals.com tel 01242 775891/775822 I don’t know exactly how many pupils will be in my class in the autumn term; how many tickets should I book? Do I have to pay for the tickets as soon as I book them?

We realise that this is a common problem for schools, and so you have until 14 September 2011 to confirm your final numbers. After this date your tickets are nonrefundable. You will receive a ticket document, which you should bring with you to the Festival; your invoice will be sent to the school finance office.

There is a lot to consider when undertaking a school trip; how well organised is the Festival?

We think that it is very well organised, and from the feedback we receive, our visiting schools think so too! Festival staff meet and greet you when you arrive at Cheltenham Town Hall and then escort you to your first event. All the venues are easily accessible. Festival staff will help seat your party, and are always available to deal with queries and give assistance. Advice for preparing a risk assessment will be available on our website.

We would like to meet the author after the event; can our children bring their own books to be signed?

If children already have a copy of an author’s book, they are very welcome to bring it to be signed after the event in the Waterstone’s Festival Book Tent, where they can also buy other books to be signed. If you don’t have time to stay and meet your author, you can order books in advance from Waterstone’s to be signed at the Festival. Waterstone’s can also organise signed book plates for your pupils. For more information about book orders contact Barbara Pendrigh at Waterstone’s on 01242 571779.

We want to bring packed lunches with us, is there anywhere to eat them?

Lots of schools have lunch during their visit to the Festival. There are large gardens behind Cheltenham Town Hall, with plenty of space for children to relax and enjoy themselves. In case of rain, there is some limited cover to keep you dry!

Is there anywhere to park? Where should our coach pull up?

There is plenty of on-street metered parking for minibuses around the Town Hall, but the area will be busy, so please allow plenty of time to find a space. There are also several public car parks within a few minutes’ walk of the Town Hall.

Coaches should arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before the start of your first event.

Coaches can pull up at the front of the Town Hall (GL50 1QA) for disembarkation but must then move on and wait at a dedicated coach parking area until pick-up time.

There is free parking for coaches at Cheltenham Race Course (GL50 4SH).

£5 About the workshops Join in an art workshop using the inspiring words of teenage diarist Anne Frank. Pupils will spend a creative hour reflecting on the dangers of intolerance, their own identity, their own dreams and work collectively to create a 'map' of their thoughts and feelings. This will be on large canvasses using paint and mixed media, and will allow children to self-reflect and express themselves.

NB this workshop takes place twice today.

£4 About the event Author, songwriter and poet John Dougherty invites you to join him as he brings his Zeus and Jack Slater stories to life with dramatic readings, audience participation and plenty of jokes and puns.

John is also a songwriter and finds it difficult not to pick up his guitar during one of his brilliantly entertaining events. John never fails to have his young audience in stitches, as well as fill their brains with facts about what it’s like to be an author, how publishing works, and even how to have sympathy for their long-suffering teachers!

Born in Larne, Northern Ireland, John Dougherty now lives in Gloucestershire. He has been among other things - a volunteer residential social worker, a YMCA staff member, a machine operator and, for eleven years, a primary school teacher. £4 About the event Back by popular demand, join the magical Kaye Umansky as she raises the roof at one of her uproarious events. Come and join in the fun as she talks about her classic character Pongwiffy and all her other fun and fiendish creations.

Kaye’s writing, and in particular her dialogue, has a strong rhythmic quality, making it ideal for reading aloud. Her event will be full of rhymes raps, readings and lots of laughs.

About Kaye Umansky Kaye Umansky was born in Plymouth, Devon. As a child, her favourite reads included Peter Pan, Ballet Shoes, Wind in the Willows and the Just William stories. She performed in a soul band with her husband Mo and music still plays a huge part in her life. Young Writers’ Day with Liz Kessler at Cheltenham College Junior School Friday 14 October, 9.15 – 3.00 Years 5 – 6 An opportunity for gifted and talented pupils About the day We are delighted to be working with the fantastic staff at Cheltenham College Junior School again this year; the Young Writers’ Day would not be possible without them. They provide a wonderful venue, delicious refreshments and a very warm welcome to all the young writers who attend this special day.

Joining us this year is the fantabulous Liz Kessler. Liz LOVES writing. She particularly enjoys the process of finding ideas and figuring out how they fit together – and helping others do the same If you love writing, and working hard at writing, and you want to be an even better writer, join her for this day of fun writing sessions all geared to helping you find ideas and build them into fully-fledged stories.
