Sue Hampton We were very fortunate to have the Author Sue Hampton visit The Prep on Thursday 5 March to help celebrate World Book Day. Sue was kind enough to spend the day signing copies of her books and running talks and workshops with Years 5 to 8.

We all learnt a great deal and thoroughly enjoyed the day. The Prep were even featured in Thursday’s ECHO.

Headmaster’s Welcome Dear Parents When the children and staff get together to create a magical day, one always knows that one is enjoying being part of a community that works together, laughs and cries together and cares. Yesterday, World Book Day, was just one of those days. The myriad of costumes worn by pupils and staff was complemented by the author visit and a series of events, all organised by Mr Ledlie. My congratulations go to all of the children for all the efforts that they made with their costumes. I just hope that it inspires them to read even more!

At Assembly on Monday, Sophie and Caitlin, students in the 6th Form at College, spoke to the children in Years 3-8. Caitlin is the Chairman of the Anti-Bullying Committee at College and Sophie, a member of the same committee, is the Deputy Head girl. Not only was their message ‘spot on’, it illustrated to the children that the anti-bullying message continues through College. It is also important to state how well Caitlin and Sophie spoke; with belief, presence and empathy.

Kingfishers Kingfishers had a very exciting time celebrating World Book Day on Thursday. We began the day in an assembly led by Gandalf!

Apparently Mr Whybrow was busy!

We then all headed down to the Assembly Hall where we ‘catwalked’ our costumes, which involved disco lights and music -j ust like a real fashion show! Check out the pictures, who can you spot in our World Book Day catwalk?

On our return to Kingfishers, we were joined by children from Y7 who read us their favourite stories.

2G particularly enjoyed a very well read Winnie the Pooh tale.

World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate books and talk about our favourite stories - we definitely did that in Kingfishers!

Kingfishers In science, Year 1 have been finding out the difference between human and animal body parts.

We had the exciting experience of Ms Duggan’s dog, Dougal, visiting us where we covered him in post-it notes labelling the different parts of his body.

Lower School Year 3 were busy practising their ESB (English Speaking Board) ready for the assessments last Monday and Tuesday.

Each child learnt a poem off by heart, and chose a passage from a book to read aloud. They also prepared a talk on a topic of their choice. We had a huge range of talks varying from dogs, cats and turtles to minecraft, drums and wasps’ nests!

The children really enjoyed the experience and gained a lot of confidence from speaking aloud in front of others.

Lower School On Thursday 5 March, the nation took part in the annual World Book Day celebration. In Lower School, the morning proved to be full of fun and laughter and once again a worthwhile activity to participate in. Costumes ranged from characters from The Wizard of Oz by Lyman Frank Baum, to The Awful Aunt by David Walliams. The pupils took part in World Book Day quizzes, creating inspirational reading quotes, making book marks, listening to a reading of Roald Dahl’s Boy, writing playscripts to include characters in costume and much more. The day was great fun and we hope you enjoy some of the photos of the costumes. For more, visit the display upstairs in Lower School.

Middle School Middle School have thoroughly enjoyed World Book Day. We all met the famous author Sue Hampton, completed a book quiz written by some of our very own Year 6 children and remained in character and costume for the whole day.

We also had an array of other characters wandering around Middle school, The Boy in a Dress surprised several teachers, Thing 1 and Thing 2 added a note of surrealism to our day and Dr Who and his dalek were last seen battling across the school yard.

Wally, from Where's Wally, made an impressive appearance, he was seen absolutely everywhere.

Without exception, Year 5 and Year 6 made the most of this opportunity to celebrate books. So, read on, ideas for next year's characters will undoubtedly be needed.

Middle School On Monday, Year 5 visited the Synagogue in Cheltenham. It was an amazing experience for the children, who were able to explore this beautiful building and learn more about the traditional way of life of Jewish people.

Music makes the world go around….

Mr Perona-Wright’s latest brainwave has set The Prep on fire. Teachers and children alike are talking scales, arpeggios and dynamics. Rumour has it that some teachers are even having the odd Grade 1 nightmare!

On a positive note ( I simply could not resist that pun), so many staff have expressed how rewarding this experience is proving to be. It has been amazing to see how children, in all departments, have patiently taken the time to encourage the “old hands” to learn something new.

Upper School Year 8 Geography Common Entrance Exam Preparation Talk

Mr Penny, Housemaster of Boyne and Head of Geography at College, came into The Prep on Saturday and gave the Year 8 some helpful hints to develop their exam technique in preparation for Common Entrance. He provided a range of strategies that will be useful for any exam in both Year 8, GCSE and A Level.

Music House Music Competition Update Well done to everyone who took part in the preliminary rounds for the House Music Competition. Over the past three days, we have listened to around 180 performances from Years 3-8, in a variety of instrumental and vocal categories.

Each person that has entered and performed will be given a House point and the overall House winner of the preliminary round will be announced in the assembly on Monday.

On Tuesday, an email will go out to all Tutors and a list will be put up in Lake House of those who have made the final rounds, which will take place on Thursday. Mr David McKee, Head of Music at College, will be the adjudicator.

Team of the Week – 2nd VII It was clear from the outset that we were the stronger team, as we scored 15 easy goals in the first quarter. We took off our strongest players in the second quarter, but still obtained nine more goals, with Prior Park still to score. We switched our players around in the final two quarters, positioning our defensive players as shooters and allowing our girls to play in unfamiliar areas of the court. This allowed Prior Park to come into the game and score some well-needed goals. The game lacked that competitive edge that we thrive on, but we did have the opportunity to see what range of skills our players possess and how we still worked well as a team. It was also good to have a convincing win in what has been a challenging season for the 2nd team.

Upper School House Netball As usual, the girls approached their House competition in good spirits and played with excellent sportsmanship throughout. Their friendly competitiveness made for some very exciting matches. In the end, it was the Sparta dream team who emerged victorious, winning all of their matches.

Team of the Week – Year 2 On Saturday morning, Y2 gathered coats, waterbottles, gumshields, shin pads and sticks, and travelled by coach to Dean Close for their first ever hockey festival.

By attending one fixture a term Y2 children are able to arrive in Year 3 without any fears of what is involved in a match, have a good understanding of the importance of match tea, hospitality and other areas which often go without thinking: all of which are key to Preparatory School.

Before leaving, Mr Hall spent time highlighting the importance of giving the opposition three cheers and shaking their hands at the end of the game.

Routines such as this can sometimes be forgotten when introducing children to competitive sport. Learning these basic principles, as well as celebrating victory, gives the children valuable experinence of the importance of sportsmanship.

On arrival, our children were split into six teams, each team played four matches, giving plenty of game time for everyone.

Boys and girls of Year 2 from both schools were fantastic; everyone threw themselves into the event with enthusiasm and determination. What was particularly thrilling to see, was the level of hockey skill demonstrated: children took what they had learnt in their lessons and used it - a huge success all round!

Our children’s behaviour was impeccable and such a credit to The Prep School at such a young age. Special thanks must be given to John Sutherland and Dean Close for hosting us and to the parents for their generous support of both teams. The future is bright, the future is blue and white !
