Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents A few of the more observant among you have been asking about the meaning of the orange and black flags currently flying on the Headmaster's lawn, and I'd like to reassure everyone that they do not signify sharks swimming near to the Cheltenham Prep shores! These flags represent the colours of Sparta and Persia, winners of the House competition last year. It's rare for two Houses to draw in this heated competition, so let me congratulate the pupils in these Houses once more.

The House system works well at The Prep, bringing pupils of all ages together in the spirit of competition.

Here, we see boys and girls from around the School learning to celebrate and commiserate alike essential skills for life, not just school. Returning from Half Term this week has seen many pupils take pride in their creative baking skills whilst contributing to their Houses' success in the House Baking. All of the staff, not least the judges (who, I am sure, endured a difficult tasting process), would like to thank the pupils for their hard work and creativity in the kitchen.

In the wake of Storm Doris, we're looking forward to a slightly less windy Saturday, full of sports fixtures.

It is essential that pupils take this time to give energy and enthusiasm on the hockey pitch or netball court, in order to balance the busy timetable of revision being undertaken during and ahead of exams. I often observe that the distraction of friendly competition alongside the excellent health benefits of exercise are wholely beneficial for the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils, and it is a pleasure to see them all thriving in both the sports arena and the classroom.

Congratulations to Harry and Joey Richardson, who both had great success ski racing over the Half Term holiday.

Dorothea Peterken for helping and comforting a Middle School pupil when they were upset

Joey won a silver medal in Giant Slalom in the ESF flèche race in Tignes. He was the youngest person in the race!

Pancake Races!

Shrove Tuesday, Tuesday 28 February School field, 10.30am Pupils who wish to participate in this year's pancake races must to come to school with both a frying pan and pancakes. We are asking each child to pay ÂŁ1 to enter, which will be paid to the school charity, Sue Ryder.

All pupils from Kingfishers to Year 8 can take part and to do so, they will need to be wearing their tracksuit bottoms and outdoor shoes. Pupils in Kingfishers should wear waterproof trousers and wellington boots.

In Support of Sue Ryder Sue Ryder has been chosen as The Prep charity for the next eighteen months. Alysia Cameron Rice, Head of Fundraising, came to speak this week in assembly and told the pupils about the vital work carried out in Gloucestershire by Sue Ryder. Leckhampton Court is the only local hospice that provides overnight care. They also have an outpatient unit where people can enjoy a range of activities from arts and crafts to alternative therapies. The final part of their work is Hospice at Home, which means patients can be treated in the comfort of their own home. Everyone was amazed that it costs ÂŁ8,000 a day to keep the hospice running and we hope in the next year with many activities from Bake Sales to Mufti Days, we can help to raise a lot of money. Alysia said that is possible for staff and parents to run the Cheltenham Half Marathon in aid of Sue Ryder and Mrs Conner can provide information if anyone is interested.

Kate Officer has certainly taken her reading everywhere - here she is with her book on the ice, as well as behind the wheel of a Go Kart! Ryan Navaei even took his reading to Europe's best known pre-historic monument, Stonehenge. Javier and Bea Berrow were at Buckingham Palace for The Changing of the Guard - and enjoyed a little light reading!

Toby Ellis has enjoyed the extreme reading challenge - here he is settling down to read in the cockpit of an A320 aircraft!

World Book Day Is it really a whole year since our last World Book Day celebrations?!

For those of you who have had their costumes planned for months, fear not, it is nearly time for you to dress up again!

On World Book Day (Thursday 2 March 2017) please come to school dressed up as a book character of your choice. You don’t need to spend a fortune on a costume, perhaps you could put your creative talents into practice and make something. Even a gesture towards a costume would be great, for example wearing a wig or carrying a prop.

There will be a range of activities and competitions to enter on the day itself but there are two that you can start thinking about right now!

Story Boxes Competition

Think inside the box rather than outside it this time and create a scene from a book of your choice inside a shoebox. Your shoebox can be any size and you can use any materials you like to create your scene. Bring your box to your form room on any day from now until Thursday 2 March; everyone who enters will receive a point for their House.

EXTREME Reading

This popular competition will run again this year.

To compete for a prize, all you need to do is take a photograph of yourself reading in an extreme or unusual place and send it or give it to Mrs Carson in the Library (email p.carson@cheltenhamcollege. org). Take inspiration from the astronaut, Tim Peak, reading in the International Space Station!

Book Swap

All week pupils have been bringing their unwanted books into the Library to swap at one of next week's Book Swap events.

These books will be collected and sorted appropriately. On Monday 27 February (Upper School) and Tuesday 28 February (Lower and Middle School) participating pupils will be able to select two books they wish to take home. Pupils who have brought in more than two books will still only be able to take two. Any remaining books will be sold on a bookstall at a later date to raise funds for the school charity.

Kingfishers

Year One have thoroughly enjoyed their Rainforest topic and this week we have been learning about the story of the cocoa bean. We found out the names of the first people who discovered chocolate; they were called the Aztecs and the Mayans. They lived in central America and Mexico, and we were surprised to hear all about how they crushed the cacao beans and mixed them with chilli peppers and spices to make a chocolatey, frothy drink. The Aztecs thought that drinking chocolate gave you wisdom and power. The Aztec Emperor Montezuma drank around 50 goblets of chocolate every day!

We decided to taste a drink made in the same way as the Mayans, although, we thought that it was very bitter and strong tasting! We decided that we much prefer the hot chocolate that we drink today!

Lower School In Lower School, Maths is taught in many different ways. The children enjoy plenty of opportunities to learn and find out about mathematical concepts in a fun, challenging and practical environment.

This term, Year 3 children have been learning about capacity. This involved investigating the capacity of different containers and reading the scales on different measuring jugs. To find out how accurate their measurements were, one class was given the challenge of making potions.

This involved measuring amounts of liquids and mixing them together to create potions such as “Speedy Potion” and “Drive Your Teacher Crazy Potion”. One of the highlights was tasting their drinks at the “Potion Bar” at the end of the lesson and comparing the quantities.

In another lesson, children were given the challenge to sort 3 dimensional shapes using venn diagrams. They had different criteria to meet and had to work out where each shape should be placed. In order to do this, it was necessary to know what a face and a vertex is.

Year 5 continue World War II study Year 5 continued their study of World War II, following on from the success of their "Play in a Day" before Half Term. The current focus is on the Battle of Britain, and after some terrific work on aeroplane identification, the classes set about building their own Spitfire aircraft.

House Baking This year's House Baking Competition has again shown us that we have some fantastic bakers at The Prep! The theme ‘Animals’ was superbly illustrated in a variety of cakes, cupcakes, biscuits and bread, baked by pupils of all ages. The judges had a tricky challenge deciding who the prizewinners were; however, they very much enjoyed tasting the delicious entries! Prize winners are to be announced soon, during Assembly. Well done to everyone who entered and earned points for their House!

Back in the Autumn Term, the class spent a bit of time looking at Old Cheltonians whose bravery had led them to being awarded medals both during and after the war. The children were incredibly lucky this week, as Mia Evans brought in the medals won by her Great Great Great Grandfather William Tucker, a Cheltenham resident, who fought in the Battle of the Somme, for the Royal Worcester Regiment.

In Kingfishers Mrs Buttress was delighted to be the judge of the competition and taste every one of the 30 entries! There were lions, snakes, hedgehogs and horses and they all tasted delicious. After a think and an accompanying cup of tea, the winners and runners up were decided upon and will be announced in Kingfisher Assembly on Friday. Well done to everyone for their efforts and for providing a strong showing from Kingfishers!

Team of the Week – U10A The team set out to apply what we have been working on in training sessions to our match play. They have made good progress this term and it was good to see the practice paying off in this well-contested match. All were determined to win and didn’t shy away from a free ball. Our spacing on the court is improving, but we still need to work on driving forward for a ball once we have created space. Our defenders worked hard to steal back the ball and used centre court players well to deliver the ball into the attacking circle. Some fluid passages of play and consistent shooting allowed us to come out on top with a 7-3 win at the final whistle.

Team of the Week – U9A win Severnside Tournament On a wet and blustery day at Clifton College, the Under 9s demonstrated not only their hockey prowess, but also their determination and resilience. With ‘Doris’ lashing the ground with fine drizzle and gale force gusts, it was not a place for the faint hearted and, despite a long journey, both teams were out of their blocks with wins over local rivals, Dean Close. Next up were the hosts, Clifton College, and again both teams triumphed. Our final matches were against the Downs and what pleased me most was the response of the A team who were two goals down in the first two minutes. Did, heads drop? Did they give up? Not at all. Retaining their belief and, most importantly, their shape, they quickly got a goal back and kept on looking for the equaliser. That it arrived with the final move of the match made the day very dramatic and, in fact, it was this goal which won the tournament. Meanwhile, the B team, demonstrating the same fierce application, held the Downs to a draw which handed them the overall tournament. Great attitude, an ability to listen to their coaches, genuine sportsmanship and polite behaviour at a protracted match tea. What more could one ask for and a day to make a Headmaster proud?!
