Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents Wednesdays and Saturdays in the Summer Term should be conjuring up images of sun, tennis and cricket. Not so in April and May when we have been treated to washouts and deep freezes. Nevertheless, we have soldiered on and played as much sport as possible with many encouraging performances.

The structure of this Summer Term means that we arrive at the Half Term break at exactly the right time and I encourage all to have a good break. Year 8, with Common Entrance looming, must establish the balance between revision and rest. A sensible plan will underpin any success in this respect. On our return, I accept that the second half of the Summer Term is subject to the usual plethora of events which not only characterises this part of the academic year, but also puts pressure on the academic curriculum.

As Year 8 complete Common Entrance and move into the specially designed post-Common Entrance programme, all other year groups will continue with their normal curriculum.

I am delighted to announce the following staff appointments: Mrs Simpson will be the new Housemistress of Persia; Miss Ramsay will be the new Assistant Houseparent and Mr Wells, whilst remaining in the Boarding House, will take on the role of Deputy Head (Operations). This last role is in response to the increased safeguarding responsibilities of the Deputy Head (Pastoral), Mr Jenkins.

Baaaa-rilliant new haircut!

To mark the weather slowly getting warmer (!), the sheep down on the Prep Farm have been sheared.

Kingfishers and Lower School pupils left their classrooms to watch the methodical process, heard more about sheep's wool and were able to feel its interesting texture.

The animals are now sporting excellent new, short, summer coats!

Skiers Slalom to Success!

Oscar Mann, Ted Mann, Harry Richardson and Joey Richardson represented Cheltenham Prep as a team at the South West Schools Championship 2016 at Gloucester Ski Centre on Saturday 21 May. They completed three timed slalom runs each, with their best two individual times counting. They had great success, gaining second place overall against over 100 racers from all age categories.

In addition, we had further success with Oscar Mann retaining his first place position on the podium for the second year running in the Championship for his fastest two combined times.

Finally, there were yet more podium places for The Prep as Joey Richardson gained second place and Ted Mann third place on the podium for their fastest two combined times. A great day all round!

Break a Leg! The second LAMDA Showcase was an entertaining selection of performances, where fourteen Middle and Upper School pupils had the chance to perform the drama sketches that they have been working on, to an audience in Lake House. It was highlighted as ‘work-in-progress', as there are four more weeks until their examinations, but a talent for acting was shown by all performers in what was a fun and interesting show. Themes ranged from football and Kindertransport to apple scrumping, and included such characters as Hansel, of Hansel and Grettel, and the Wicked Queen from Snow White in a Miss World contest! Variety, indeed.

Kingfishers Kingfishers... You are Amazing!

This week Kingfishers children were given many opportunities to showcase their talents and achievements and the results were fantastic!

Beginning with the Year 2 Assembly on Tuesday and finishing with our successful Summer Concert and Open Afternoon (see the photos below), every child in Kingfishers deserves to feel proud of themselves!

Super Summer Concert On Thursday, Kingfishers had their Summer Concert. Everyone had their moment in the spotlight whether performing a solo, singing as part of a choir or performing in an ensemble. The Performing Arts Choir gave an excellent rendition of two songs, the Year 1 Crotchet group gave a highly commended performance of Blueberry Pie, and then the Year 2 recorders performed. 2D performed Hot Cross Buns, 2G performed Two at Twilight and 2S performed Jazzamatazz.

The show culminated in a performance by the Kingfishers Street Dance Group, shortly followed by everyone joining in with This Little Light of Mine.

What a wonderful way to end the term. Well done Kingfishers!

Lower School

On Tuesday, Lower School put on a wonderful concert for parents. The concert was a mixture of ensemble, solo and choral performances.

Junior Choir started off the concert with two jazzy numbers followed by a number of soloists from Year 3 who had just begun learning their instrument in September. Then Training Band took to the stage for their debut performance with two songs, Frere Jacques and Buddy’s Boogie.

This was followed by soloists from both Year 3 and Year 4 who performed on a wide range of instruments. Afterwards, Lower School Strings took to the stage with three items to perform, which was shortly followed by a cello trio and the very talented soloists in Year 4. Street Dance Group wowed the audience with their dance routine.

The concert ended with Junior Choir performing the Spanish song, Guantanamera and When I Grow Up from the musical, Matilda. A piece that many of the children have thoroughly enjoyed learning. They all did themselves proud and performed to the best of their abilities.

Persia Pupils Take on Staff in Lasertag Battle Last week Persia House members went to Lasertag in Gloucester. Pupils were delighted to be allowed to aim, shoot and ‘hit’ the staff! But obviously, staff fired back in return.

There were outstanding games from all staff, but they were beaten hands down by Vladimir (Year 8) and Tulliah (Year 4), with Tulliah becoming the overall winner. Thank you to all the Persians who attended. Roll on the next battle! Revenge will be sweet...

Scholars' Assembly on Significant Women in History As part of the History Post-Scholarship Programme, the scholarship pupils gave a presentation to the school about significant women in History. The purpose of the presentation was to determine which woman was the most significant. The audience would listen to the four arguments and at the end vote on who they thought was the most important History is dominated by male figures. However, with the release of the film Suffragette earlier this academic year, almost 100 years after the peak of the protests in the early 1900s to secure the vote for women, it is vital to also study the important women who have impacted History. In preparation for their presentation, the pupils each researched ten women who they felt had had a significant impact on History and gave a brief summary of their influence. A list was then drawn up of the most commonly occurring figures of History and four candidates were chosen: Margaret Thatcher, Marie Curie, Queen Victoria and Rosa Parks.

The expositions were wide-ranging and superbly put across. There was plenty of historical detail, humour and even a song! The pupils pitched their subjects at the right level, keeping the attention and interest of staff and pupils alike. Following the vote, the results were as follows: 1) Rosa Parks; 2) Marie Curie; 3) Margaret Thatcher and 4) Queen Victoria.

Since the Scholarship Exam, the pupils have been working on various projects that have departed from the curriculum and explored further into different characters and events that have coloured our past. The group have produced their own ‘Historical Dinner Parties’, inviting seven guests from across time, and have also assembled together a screenplay on the story of King Henry II and Archbishop Thomas Becket. Filming will begin in the next half of Term.

My thanks go to the Year 8 Scholars for their enthusiasm and for putting on a great morning of entertainment, celebrating four very important woman who have had a significant impact on the shape of today’s society.

Last Term, Mr Baird presented an assembly on ‘Rempstone Adventure Camp’, a camp that he and Mrs Baird went on when they were at Prep School and continue to volunteer at every summer.

Rempstone, an Adventure Holiday for boys and girls in school Years 6 to 11, takes place during August, for 10 days. Alongside a fun-filled programme of activities, the camp encourages Christian values.

There are still spaces available and all the information you need about the camp should be either in the leaflets handed out last Term, or found on the website (www.rempstoneadventurecamp.org.uk), but please do email Mr Baird (d.baird@cheltenhamcollege.org) if you have any further questions.

Middle School House Rounders and Tennis The Middle School girls spent Wednesday afternoon competing for their Houses in a joint tennis and rounders competition. Each House had to provide a doubles tennis pair, and then they joined up with another House to form a rounders team. The scores allocated reflected this arrangement and when everything was totalled up at the end of the day, the results were as follows...

Aquathlon

Malvern College was the spectacular venue for the invitational Aquathlon we competed in this weekend.

We took a team of four girls and four boys in an U11 and an U13 age group; all of whom had to swim 100m in the pool followed immediately by an 800m run. There were some extremely impressive and experienced aquathletes in attendance, and many races were lost and won in the transition area, some being much faster than others at squeezing wet feet into trainers in a hurry!

The Cheltenham Prep competitors all did the school proud in their endeavour, and although we did not have any individual placings we were very excited to find out that we had come third overall as a school team (out of twelve schools in attendance). A true team effort - Well done!

Boys' Sports Team of the Week: the U9 year group (A, B and C teams) This first Half Term has seen a series of outstanding performances from the U9 boys. This is not down to a small group of them, but the strength in depth and determined attitude running right throughthe teams: from the opening batsman in the A team to the outstanding C team. Every training session has been taken with determination to improve and the matches have been a sight to behold.

Mr Newson took the B team to Clifton on Wednesday and came back in awe of the consistency of their bowling attack, well above the standard expected of a B team.

Selection has been and will continue to be a very tough proposition as so many of the boys are performing to such a high standard on a regular basis. As we move into the second half of term we will look to stretch and challenge this group of boys and we know they will rise to the challenge. Well done everyone.
