he so-called Chinese gybe can be an intimidating experience at the best of times, but imagine contending with this in pitch darkness, at the start of a four-week leg through the formidable Southern Ocean in the world’s toughest ocean race. This is what some of the sailors in the VOR were tackling, just days after leaving Auckland. It is pretty incredible what these sailors go through in maintaining highly tactical, almost dinghy-style racing over thousands of miles of ocean. As our analysis on page 24 reveals, we’re witnessing this top end of our sport enter a new era, one with which Corinthian sailors are ever more able to identify. It’s great to see that Team SCA’s campaign is also ushering in a new attitude towards women’s sailing, as Andi Robertson finds out from Annie Lush (page 14); the girls are in it to give the race their best shot, not merely for novelty value. Back on dry land, another battle in the war that is ever the America’s Cup has broken out, with teams divided over the suggestion of abandoning the AC62 in favour of smaller catamarans for 2017’s final. The one refreshing thing this time round is that the motivation for the suggestion See us on Facebook.com/sailingmagazine
seems to be on protecting the longevity of the event, rather than any sort of conceited motivation from the defender. There will be losers – Luna Rossa, one of the most advanced in terms of design (see our report on page 36) has threatened to withdraw – but there will also be winners – Team France, it would seem, would be back in the game, with skipper Frank Cammas anticipating a shoestring budget of €15-20m needed to win the Cup. Not exactly sport for all with that price tag, but a positive step away from uber-elistism. For those of us with more down-to-earth budgets, it’s time to start planning as the 2015 season gets under way with plenty of regattas planned up and down the UK – don’t miss our regatta guide, which has something for everyone this summer.
