questions to ask your venue
It’s an exciting time, but before you sign on the dotted line and part with your hard-earned cash, here’s everything you need to know going in…
ni
i
“Do you have public liability insurance?” Rule number one, boys and girls: this is absolutely a non-negotiable. “What’s included in the cost?” Everything you’ve seen on your visit, is it all included in the price? Always ask your venue to list everything included in the overall package – and ask whether that price includes VAT. Be sure to go into the smaller details, such as lighting, mics for the speeches, cutlery, table linens, menu tastings, sound equipment and whether the bridal suite comes as standard. It’s also worth asking if you’re able to pay in instalments, as this can help with your budgeting schedule for other areas of the wedding. “Are we likely to be bumping into strangers on the day?” Or other brides, for that matter. Many wedding venues are exclusive nowadays but it’s always worth checking, if this is something that is important to you. In the same vein, also ask how many weddings the venue does in a day. If your ceremony is in the morning, the last thing you want is to feel rushed out the door because they need the space for an afternoon party. “What’s your minimum and maximum guest allowance?” There’s no point setting your heart on a venue if it can’t cater to your numbers, so find out what the capacities are and how flexible this is. Most people remember to ask about maximum guest numbers but many forget that some venues require a minimum, too, particularly if it’s an exclusive-hire space. And don’t forget to keep room (both physically and numerically) for suppliers who’ll be there throughout the day, such as your photographer, videographer and musicians.
8 | weddingideasmag.com | VENUES 2020
C H O O S I N G YO U R V E N U E
“What are we not allowed to do?” If you have dreams of a grand firework finalé but the venue doesn’t permit them, perhaps it’s time to look for somewhere that does. There could also be things in the small print that you wouldn’t even consider asking about, such as, ‘no dancing in heels’, ‘no candles or naked flames’, ‘no confetti’ or a policy on young children. Who knew?!
l is i s
“Do you have a wet-weather plan?” Be sure to ask this if you have plans for an outdoor ceremony or drinks reception. It’s also good to know the best spots to have photos taken if the weather isn’t playing ball on the day. “When can I get in the venue?” Some will be able to give you the morning to decorate and get yourself ready, others may only be available for a few hours before. Even better is if you can get things set up the evening before, particularly if you’re planning on some serious decorative features. Find out how long you’ll have to set up so you can plan ahead.
PHOTOGRAPHY: IMOGENXIANA.COM. LOCATION: DEANSCOURT.ORG
“How accessible is it?” Don’t overlook your less-able guests – the last thing you want is for Grandma to be confined to one room, or have to be carried down to the terrace for the group photo. Disabled access throughout is essential. “Will there be an on-the-day coordinator on hand to help?” Someone to direct the guests when they start to arrive, to ensure the tablecloths are pristine and the guest book is in the right place – or will you be required to bring someone in yourself? Whoever is set to be there to handle proceedings, ensure you have the chance to meet and build rapport beforehand, so you can feel comfortable in the knowledge that your day is in safe hands. “Will we need to organise a clean-up the next day?” Because who wants to have to spend their first morning as a married couple picking up the remnants of leftover wedding cake and stacking chairs into a van? Find out if your venue is able to take on Operation Clean Up to avoid doing it yourself if possible.
From urban gems to cool country pads, every decision you make centres around your venue
ho wants to s end their first orning as a and sta king chairs into a van?”

nan s
i
“Can we choose our vendors?” Some venues have a recommended list of wedding suppliers which they prefer their brides to stick to, others are more flexible about who you can bring in. This is especially true when it comes to the catering – many require couples to use their in-house catering team, which, if you had visions of streetfood stalls and craft beer carts for example, could be a problem. Make sure you’ve read up on the vendors ahead of time if this is the case. “Can we bring our own alcohol?” If you can, most venues will charge a corkage fee, so it’s worth working out which option will work best for your budget: corkage or opting for the venue’s own wine list. And if you’d like to supply all the booze for your guests, make sure that’s allowed too – some venues only allow it for the toasts. “Are there noise restrictions?” If your venue is near a residential area or similar, it might be the case that the band has to finish up by 10.30pm – it’s good to be aware of your limitations.
“How many hours can we celebrate for?” A five- to six-hour wedding is pretty standard, including the ceremony, a cocktail hour, sitdown meal and a few hours of dancing – but find out beforehand what time the venue is licensed until. Remember, as tempting as it can be to want to party into the small hours, it’s been a long day for everyone and sometimes a midnight finish is usually a good time – before things get messy.
nd inall
“Can I get that in writing?” Make sure you ask for everything that is verbally offered to you to be put in writing so you are clear about what has been agreed, then run through it with your venue coordinator a few days before the big day.

KELLY & ZACK
Having found love in Hyde Park, this couple chose a city venue with a garden backdrop to mark their big day PHOTOGRAPHY: JAY ROWDEN (JAYROWDEN.COM)
A
fter a courtship that had played out against the backdrop of London’s green spaces – often accompanied with a bottle or two of fizz – The Hurlingham Club was a natural choice for Kelly and Zack’s nuptials. A sparkling white Georgian manor set in 42 verdant acres in Fulham, it was also the perfect backdrop for a cloudless early summer celebration, with the Palm Court’s dramatic glass ceilings and botanical displays making for a light-flooded ceremony. “We didn’t have a theme as such, but we worked with a neutral colour scheme and a few Scottish details to reflect Zack’s heritage, such as thistle buttonholes, tablet favours and whisky drams,” Kelly explains. “I also worked with Twilight Trees, which styled and dressed the venue with faux blossom trees, flowers, candles, balloons and feathers.” The richlytextural wedding-day florals and loosely-tied bouquets added to the atmosphere of heady seasonal romance. In keeping with the fresh, airy feel of the setting, the bride opted for chic, modern separates, pairing a slinky Julie Vino skirt with an intricately detailed bespoke top, crafted by the Blush & Ivory boutique’s seamstress. “The outfit made me feel
incredible; the pieces are so gorgeous and comfortable enough for me to eat and drink without any worries – which I did,” she grins. Beginning with Canon in D and closing with All You Need Is Love – both played beautifully by a string quartet – the couple’s simple civil ceremony was swiftly followed by a champagne reception which opened out onto the clubhouse’s scenic gardens. “I’d been close to crying as I made my way towards Zack, so when we walked back up the aisle as an officially married couple towards the waiter holding out two glasses of bubbly, I realised it was time for us to just savour the rest of the day,” Kelly smiles. After a couple’s photography session roaming the estate’s grounds, the bride, groom and guests sat down to a sumptuous meal of lamb two ways or a seasonal vegetarian gnocchi dish, followed by a dessert of coconut cake with passionfruit. “I made up icebreakers for the tables: one funny, anonymous fact about each person, with the group having to guess who it was about,” adds Kelly. The assembled guests then danced the night away to two live bands. “The saxophonist really got the party started!” Kelly adds.

GRACE & BEN
After a whirlwind engagement, this couple tied the knot in a wedding full of romantic elegance and personalised details PHOTOGRAPHY: CHRISTINA SARAH (CHRISTINASARAH.COM)
O
verlooking a picturesque lake and gardens in the heart of SW15, Grove House proved to be the understated-yet-elegant reception venue Ben and Grace had been looking for. “We also had a short engagement – just seven months – so finding a venue had proved tricky. We were lucky to get availability at such short notice!” Grace recalls. The Georgian pad was the perfect fit for their wedding style, too. “Our theme was a ‘journey of love’,” Grace reveals. “And a colour combination of blush pink, pale blue and rose gold. A friend of Ben’s designed a logo of us walking down a path holding hands, with a balloon, and we used this on all of our stationery to tie the look together,” she adds. The couple let the venue’s stunning period details speak for themselves, by keeping reception décor to a minimum and adding simple floral arrangements to the tables. “We hired vintage bottles and filled them with pink and ivory flowers, such avalanche roses, dahlias, astilbe, gypsophila and spray roses,” says Grace. And even the bride’s fragrant bouquet reflected the setting – a loose, handtied posy of garden roses, scabiosa, astrantia and astilbe. As well as getting to grips with much of the décor themselves (“Ben built the wooden
arch backdrop for the church aisle, while his mum arranged all the flowers for the arch and the pillars,” says Grace), personalised details were woven throughout the day, including in the couple’s choice of menu. “We wanted to incorporate both our Chinese and British nationalities so we started with an Asian salad of seared beef, raw seasonal vegetables and soy, chili and mirin dressing, gave the option of five-spice roasted duck or pan-fried seabass with rice noodles for main, and finished with a trio of desserts, including coconut panna cotta with mango and black sesame, elderflower and lychee cheesecake and a bitter chocolate tart,” Grace recalls. The layers of champagne-coloured tulle and delicate lace details on Grace’s Ellis Bridals gown added a modern twist on the couple’s elegant yet classic theme. “I tried on around 20 or so dresses at about six different boutiques, but when I tried this one, I knew I had found something special,” she says. The bride picked out a two-tier champagne tulle veil from Etsy seller Blossom and Bluebird and a pair of rose-gold leaf design earrings to complete the look, while her three bridesmaids looked the part in nudecoloured gowns with pearl detailing from Little Mistress – the perfect finishing touch to the couple’s classic theme.

LIZZIE & ASHLEY
A bright palette helped these childhood sweethearts pull together a laidback day PHOTOGRAPHY: SARAH LEGGE (SARAHLEGGEPHOTOGRAPHY.CO.UK)
M
odern and full of natural light, Millbridge Court offered Lizzie and Ashley the perfect canvas to create their own vision of a relaxed wedding day. “From the outset, all we wanted was to create a fun and laidback atmosphere, rather than a formal occasion, that’s not really ‘us’” Lizzie explains, “so we opted for a bright colour scheme.” Plentiful loosely-tied flower arrangements added to the day’s vibrant feel, with plinths, large table centrepieces, floral arches and bouquets bursting with bright coral charm peonies, an array of peach blooms and mintgreen foliage. To complement the vivid floral tones, the couple incorporated coral-pink balloons into the reception setting. Despite the easy feel of the day, there was something that was giving Lizzie some anxiety in the build-up to the wedding. “The dress search was long and stressful, so I was very relieved when I finally found the one!” she laughs “it was a struggle to find something that I felt truly comfortable in, and this turned out to be especially important as it was one of the hottest days of the year!” With a romantic beaded floral lace bodice and soft pleated tulle skirt, the A-line Ellis Bridals gown’s low back and V-neckline created a contemporary yet classic feel. Lizzie got ready with her maid of honour and two bridesmaids, who looked the part in floor-length mint-green chiffon ASOS dresses, including professionally-done hair and make-up. “I wanted a natural but lasting
look that enhanced my freckles, as Ashley has always loved my freckles.” Lizzie smiles. Following a civil ceremony and a goldenhour photo session hijacked by a curious herd of cows (“probably some of my favourite shots,” admits Lizzie), guests sat down to antipasti sharing boards overflowing with Italian meats, marinated baby mozzarella, artichokes, sun-blushed tomatoes and mixed olives. A main course of pork belly, vegetarian arancini balls and speeches followed, but some of the guests may have been preoccupied by the World Cup. “There were a few checking-the-score-on-the-phoneunder-the table situations.” Lizzie giggles. To finish the meal, an interactive patisserie bar, presided over by the couple’s four-tier naked cake, offered up a selection of mini Eton mess, banoffee and chocolate desserts. Music is very important to Lizzie and Ashley, so a live band was an absolute must when planning the day. “We couldn’t have done better than XO Party Band. A live trio played during the ceremony and drinks reception, and played acoustic covers outside while we all enjoyed the sun. After the meal, the full five-piece band played a series of live sets which ensured that none of us left the dancefloor until the end of the night.” After the big day, the couple jetted off for a week’s safari at the Masai Mara in Kenya, followed by a week of total relaxation on Silhouette in the Seychelles. “We went on daily game drives and took a hot-air balloon ride over the Mara river, then spent a week in total paradise. It was absolute bliss!”

“
he most important elements of the day for us were the venue, the photography, the outfits and the flowers,” recalls Emma, as she thinks back to the moment she and groom Jack started planning their wedding. “We work in design and fashion, so finding the right suppliers for these particular elements was really important to us.” The pair tied the knot at Gosfield Hall, a striking Georgian mansion in the heart of Essex. “As soon as we walked in, we knew,” smiles Emma. “For us, it was the interior features that wowed – and when we were told that we could get married in the Grand Salon, that sold it. “Jack’s mum sadly passed away just after we got engaged, but she had previously told him that she loved Gosfield too, and that was the blessing we needed to go ahead and book,” Emma adds. With a palette of dusky pink and grey-lilac offset with pops of blue and yellow “to lift everything”, the incredible floral displays took centre-stage. “We were able to move them from the ceremony to the reception and they looked amazing right up to the very
end of the day,” Emma says. She also cites the drinks reception as a highlight – “it was important for us that there was plenty to eat and drink,” Emma says. “We served prosecco, Aperol spritz and mojitos alongside beers and non-alcoholic alternatives, and guests enjoyed canapés including blue cheese and fig crostini, brie and red onion croutons, duck croquettes and smoked salmon blinis. We had a jazz quartet, who were brilliant, and were lucky enough to have amazing weather,” she adds. The bride’s Gemy Maalouf gown was nothing like what she thought she wanted but proved perfect in the end. “When I described to the assistant at Mirror Mirror London what I thought I wanted, she brought this gown out for me ‘just to try’,” Emma recalls. “I said I didn’t like it, but found myself really warming to it an hour later. Two appointments later I was in love and made the purchase.” The statement design was a fitted lace number with a huge silk skirt that’s designed to be worn over the top or as a train. “Obviously it was a nightmare to walk around in,” Emma laughs, “but who cares? It was amazing!”

CHERRY & ADRIAN Inspired by the miles they’ve travelled to be together, this couple’s close-to-home wedding was a celebration of their lasting love PHOTOGRAPHY: SARAH HANNAM (HANNAM-WEDDINGS.COM)
R
ecalling the moment she saw husband-to-be Adrian waiting for her at the altar, Cherry says “It’s hard to talk about without sounding cheesy, but I thought of how lucky we were to now be able to spend the rest of our lives together – I could feel the church was full of love for us.” The romance-filled religious ceremony closed with a reading from Philip Pullman’s The Amber Spyglass – the bride’s favourite childhood book. “It was the most amazing start to our wedding day,” she smiles. Cherry and Adrian chose to hold their reception near their respective hometowns of Coventry (his) and Warwick (hers) at Stoneleigh Park, despite the difficulty of long-distance logistics. “With Adrian being in New York and me in London, the planning was quite an epic task. We both wanted to get married in our local area though, and we loved the history of the place, especially knowing that Jane Austen had lived there,” Cherry explains. And with a guest list of 120 for the day and 150 in the evening, it was one of the only venues in the region that had the capacity for their guest list. And Cherry was lucky enough to find the ultimate dress to match her classically elegant setting while shopping in New York. “The Rita Vinieris gown was an absolute dream come true, and it was the very first one I tried on!” The strapless Mikado silk mermaid-style gown had an oversized bow detail at the back, with a separate detachable train. “I’d
always dreamed of having a wedding dress with a huge bow on the back, so I couldn’t have found anything more me,” she grins. With such a statement dress detail, she opted to keep her accessories subtle, with delicate pearl earrings and hair slides. As well as sticking to a chic colour palette of peach, white and gold, the pair settled on a travel-inspired theme, choosing to name each reception table after a country they’d visited, as well as popping a personalised luggage tag at each place setting. With such a vast space to fill, they opted to ramp up the floral styling. “We had a white archway in the middle of the room, along with some artificial cherry blossom trees,” she recalls “and on each table, we had tall vases brimming with big peach bouquets, which really added to the atmosphere.” As for her bouquet, Cherry knew that she wanted an all-roses arrangement, comprising a mixture of pale pink, peach and white blooms. Meanwhile, her maid of honour, sister Holly, and four bridesmaids carried peach carnations that matched their embellished Lace & Beads gowns perfectly. With temperatures hitting 34˚C that afternoon, guests were happy to play garden games on the lawn while a saxophonist played laidback melodies. After the wedding breakfast, Cherry’s father serenaded guests with country hits, before live band Silk Sapphire kicked off the night’s non-stop dancing. “It was the perfect summer’s night!” Cherry laughs.

hen Joel proposed, his childhood sweetheart Jen already knew what date to set for the big day. “We’d dated at high school but got together properly when I was back from uni for Christmas holidays some years later, on 27 December 2007,” she explains. “We were married on our 11th anniversary.” With a festive celebration in mind, the couple’s search for a venue soon took them to Solihull’s Hampton Manor. “We wanted to get married and have our reception in the same place,” she says. “And we wanted to keep all of our guests together. Some hotels we visited had almost too much space.” After seeing the restaurant with rooms online, Jen took Joel for a visit, and both fell for the easy elegance of the venue. “The cosy space had a real sense of individuality about it,” Jen adds. Having chosen a location that combines historical tradition with a modern edge, the pair settled on a super-chic monochromatic colour palette, complemented with green foliage and cream, velvety roses. “Essentially, we wanted to be able to look back on our photos and still be pleased with our own styling!” Jen says. Subtle nods to Christmas could be found dotted around the Manor, from the decked-out tree to the white and gold bauble decorations strung from the
courtyard’s ceiling. After having difficulty finding a dress, Jen chose a Pronovias gown from Georgina Scott Bridal in Stourbridge. Deceptively simple, the sophisticated design featured a pooling train and statement sleeve details. Her accessories were kept to a minimum: just a cathedrallength veil for the ceremony. For her three bridesmaids, she opted for Manchester-based label Nadine Merabi, with the bridal party travelling north to have their dresses fitted specially by the designer herself. When it came to footwear, though, Jen gave her girls more leeway. “I wanted them to show their own style. They ranged from Jimmy Choo to Matalan!” Not to be outdone, style-savvy groom Joel wore a bespoke Duncan James of Walsall suit, adding his initials to the jacket lining as a memento of the day. After walking down the aisle in the Birches Room to Songbird by Eva Cassidy, Jen and Joel took their vows in front of an intimate group of guests, before they all moved to the glass-roofed, candlelit courtyard for a Michelin-inspired menu of dishes and funny speeches. After the first dance, guitarist Ben Drummond performed acoustic tracks, before saxophonist Calum Bayliss and DJ Stuart Ojelay played music well into the wee, small hours.

JOSEFINA & YASSIN Pristine ivory, silver and gold glamour and chic contemporary touches made this celebration one to remember PHOTOGRAPHY: WHITE STAG WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY (WHITESTAGWEDDINGS.COM)
A
fter an epic trip to South Africa that resulted in a hike up Table Mountain, a 9,000ft skydive and a heartfelt sunset proposal on the beach, stylish custom-made invitations followed as Josefina and Yas asked friends and family to join them on their big day at Rushton Hall in Northamptonshire. “I’d searched endlessly online for a venue that was white and pristine, grand and elegant – something that suited our style – and we fell in love with Rushton Hall as soon as we set foot in the orangery ballroom,” Josefina recalls. The space ticked all the boxes for the couple – high ceilings, white walls and divine chandeliers. “The windows also allow a huge amount of natural light in. We wanted a venue that would accommodate our guests too, and offer a cosy breakfast for everyone the next day,” she adds. The ballroom required little decoration, so Josefina and Yas mixed gold and silver with ivory to complement their classic and elegant wedding style. “On the tables we had silver candelabra and mercury glass vases with white roses and foliage, ivory pillar candles and silver beaded charger plates,” says Josefina. “I also loved the soft grey, goldembossed chairs included by Rushton Hall.” It was Becky from Florae Foray who helped Josefina’s wedding vision become a reality: “I wanted a look that was romantic and soft but
classic, so for my bouquet we chose all-white flowers and natural foliage. She also created the most stunning fireplace feature which proved a beautiful backdrop for our guests’ photos,” the bride adds. Her bouquet perfectly complemented her chic Pronovias gown – a Chantilly lace design with embellished straps and a low back. “I didn’t imagine finding my dress so soon as I was overwhelmed with all the styles on offer,” Josefina recalls. “But this one stood out to me, even on the hanger. It was simple but detailed enough to feel romantic. I slept on it – and returned the next day to buy it. “It’s easy to get distracted by other dresses when you don’t see your gown for nine months, but the key – Lisa from Serendipity Brides told me – is to remember how you felt in the changing room, not how you look in the picture that you took!” A cathedral-length veil and Valentino heels were the finishing touches to Josefina’s sophisticated style, while Yas looked dashing in a Hugo Boss tux. In a twist on tradition, the couple chose to do a first-look before the ceremony. “It was our chance to have a private moment and it really was emotional,” recalls Josefina. “It was our favourite moment from the day.” Later, DJs and friends of events manager Yas got the party underway with a mix of R’n’B and hip hop. “We can’t stand cheesy disco!” Josefina laughs.

LEANNA & PHIL
Handmade details and a pretty pastel palette gave this country-loving couple’s homespun celebration a relaxed vibe

“

’m not particularly girly and am definitely more at home in jeans and boots – plus I love country music and had always imagined getting married in my cowboy boots, so that’s exactly what I did!” says Leanna, as she recalls the moment she and Phil decided on a rustic theme for their May nuptials. The pair created a wedding-day style that was both playful and laidback at their converted garden-centre venue, with rows of haybale seating, garden games, seasonal flowers, Kraft paper stationery and lashings of hessian. “Floral Media is an amazing space that really required very little décor,” reveals Leanna. “We simply added to what was already there with personalised details such as bunting handmade by my mum, various photographs and flowers that had been created by a family friend. Another friend supplied our cake – a four-tier naked cake comprised of Victoria sponge, chocolate and lemon layers, displayed on a log slice sourced from my parents’ garden.” Potted lavender, candles and wooden hearts all formed the finer details, and
on the tables were personalised mason jar glasses for each guest, designed to be used throughout the night, as they enjoyed acoustic music, rounds of croquet and sparklers around the firepit. The relaxed vibe even continued with the incredible edibles. Guests tucked into a buildyour-own gourmet burger bar as the main feast, as the couple weren’t keen on a formal sit-down dinner. The array of amazing sweet treats included a dessert table of doughnuts, homemade brownies and more. A blush-pink dress by Stella York was Leanna’s outfit of choice. “I was definitely drawn to the colour first of all,” she recalls. The bride teamed it with her lace-customised cowboy boots, a tulle veil and gypsophila and roses in her hair to match her bouquet, while Phil swapped his everyday suit for some lightbrown chinos and a tweed waistcoat. “As we didn’t really have a set colour theme, the bridesmaids wore lace dresses in a range of tonal pastel colours. It was lucky that the same dress came in a range of colours – I just ordered them all and they chose their favourite,” Leanna says.

f there was one thing personal assistant Charlotte knew she wanted when it came to planning her dream wedding, it was a dress by couture designer Suzanne Neville. “Her Knightsbridge boutique was the only store I visited – I really felt like she catered to real women of all shapes and sizes, and aside from that, her designs are stunning!” she recalls. Charlotte tried on a few different styles before deciding on a classic custommade ballgown with lace sleeves and a veil. She let her dress do the talking, keeping accessories to a minimum: “I’m only 5ft and as my dress was quite big, I didn’t want to overdo it with too many details. I kept it simple, wearing my mum’s diamond stud earrings and Benjamin Adams sandals.” The bride’s outfit certainly set the tone for their classic Cotswolds wedding. “The Cotswolds is our escape from London – we just love it there, and Barnsley House was truly our dream venue. The grounds and gardens are out of this world and, above all, we wanted to bring our guests away for the whole weekend to celebrate with us,” Charlotte smiles. With the country-house setting booked, planning got underway immediately: “From the moment we got engaged, I was buying signage and decorations from places like Etsy and Not On The High Street,” Charlotte recalls. “We used a company called Aisle Hire for the candle lanterns and a local Cotswolds company to decorate the outside
of the house and inside of the marquee with balloons. I also wanted some kind of floral backdrop for the top table, so hired large floral ‘LOVE’ letters from a company called Love Bird Events. My sister and I were up at 6.30am on the morning of wedding, putting up signs all over the venue. It really completed the look,” she adds. Flowers were also a huge part of the décor. Two urns filled with roses and hydrangeas stood as a backdrop to the ceremony, while the tall glass centrepieces, wedding party bouquets and even the cake all featured the same blooms in shades of pink and cream. As 110 guests sat down to dine, welcomed with miniature bottles of Moët at each place setting, Barnsley House served up some of the hearty, homemade, organic menu it is known for. “We kept the menu simple and classic – buffalo mozzarella wrapped in Parma ham and sundried tomatoes, locally sourced chicken breast with croquette potatoes and a milk chocolate delice with cappuccino ice cream and candied hazelnuts,” recalls Charlotte. After the wedding, the couple jetted off for 10 blissful nights in the Seychelles – as organised by Toni. “He’s a man who does his research,” Charlotte laughs. “We stayed on a private island called Félicité, at the Six Senses Zil Pasyon resort, booked through Abercrombie & Kent. We had the most amazing time relaxing in the spa, eating amazing local food and snorkelling.”

ith its clifftop views, sweeping lawns and secluded coves, it’s little wonder athlete Lani and pilot Oliver picked Polhawn Fort for their big day on the coast. The pair tied the knot inside the fort itself, which was dressed in the most beautiful flower arrangements, bunting, rustic wooden details and white silk drapes against the exposed brickwork. “We didn’t really have a theme, but we wanted a vintage feel with lots of personal touches,” recalls Lani. “We love to travel, so our tables were named after countries we’d visited together, and our wedding invitations came in a travel wallet complete with ‘boarding pass’ inside.” Lani looked stunning in her silk crepe and lace Pronovias gown, which she picked up from Windsor & Eton Brides in Hampshire. “When I put it on for the first time, I just knew it was ‘the one’,” she smiles. “I felt so excited, I couldn’t stop smiling!” The bride also wore a veil and gypsophila in her hair and picked classic silver and pearls for her jewellery. Her maids looked equally glamorous in their light-blue dresses from Wed2B. “Unbelievably, the design of the bridesmaids’ dresses was called Lani!” she recalls. The girls carried posies of gypsophila and eucalyptus, while the reception arrangements and bridal bouquet featured succulents, hydrangeas, Miss Piggy roses, gypsophila and eucalyptus. “Olly also wore a succulent and gypsophila buttonhole with his
suit – a grey design from Reiss complete with paisley tie and pocketsquare,” adds Lani. “The brilliant ladies at The Pop Up Salon did our hair and make-up,” the bride recalls. “My look was exactly how I wanted it and both my hair and make-up lasted all day and night – even with all the dancing!” After the ceremony, friends and family were treated to a spectacular feast from Richard and the team at Apt Catering. From scallops to monkfish, to roasted rack of lamb, the locally sourced dishes went down a storm, especially as Oliver and his four best men took to the mic for the speeches. The cake – three tiers of Guinness cake, carrot cake and a lemon, polenta and pistachio cake – also proved a hit. The design was flecked with edible gold leaf to tie in with the décor. Despite the grey skies, the guests enjoyed garden games, while the newlyweds headed down to the beach for photos. Later that evening, DJ Mitch Matthews got the party started. “The dancefloor was full, from the first song to the last,” reveals Lani. “We chose Like an Arrow by Lucy Rose as our first dance sing – we like the lyrics and thought it was a good one to dance to. Not too slow, but not too fast either.” It was a twin-centre safari-moon for Lani and Oliver, as the couple flew to Zimbabwe after their wedding, spending three days in Victoria Falls. “Then we went to Hwangi National Park for two nights, and on to Mauritius for five days,” says Lani. “It was the perfect balance of activity and relaxation.”

“
fter trying on lots of dresses which didn’t really make me feel anything at all, my love for this one was immediate!” says Ashley, as she recalls the moment she discovered her Rembo Styling gown at The Case of the Curious Bride in Manchester. The bohemian design was made from ivory silk crepe and lace, with the most beautiful lace back detailing. “I was so excited I called my mum – who was on holiday in Costa Rica at the time – to tell her the news. By this point, it was six months before the big day, so it was a relief to have finally found a dress!” Though Ashley kept accessories to a minimum, she also had a last-minute change of heart with her shoes. “I originally picked a pair of flat Michael Kors sandals but switched to a pair of white Kurt Geiger heels two days before the wedding,” she recalls. “The rash decision did cause some problems with the dress, but luckily my dad is a dab hand at sewing and did some emergency adjustments the night before the wedding!” Thankfully, the rest of the couple’s planning was slightly more straightforward. “We didn’t really have a theme,” says Ashely. “We just wanted it to look simple yet stylish, so we picked out a palette of mint green, grey, silver and white.” Their wedding was
held at the stunning Holford Estate, in the venue’s purpose-built barn. “The polished concrete floors and red-brick walls were exactly what we wanted,” adds Ashley. “We filled the space with candles and flowers in glass jars, and the venue provided a marquee for the reception which we decorated with festoon lighting, vases of white gladioli and dove-grey table linen.” Also on the tables were potted herbs and miniature jars of homemade vanilla honey, which guests took away as favours. “It’s a good idea to make some decorations yourself, if you can,” adds Ashley. “We ‘branded’ glass jars and metal cans that our family and friends had collected for us with stickers that had our wedding logo on.” The fresh spring look extended to the outfits and accessories too. “My bouquet was mostly white and green, comprising sweetpeas, waxflower, eucalyptus, sage and mint wrapped in twine, it smelled divine!” recalls Ashely. In a twist on tradition, the bridesmaids led balloons down the aisle. Later on, after enjoying drinks the heavenly surroundings of Holford’s gardens, the party got underway with a live band and DJ, plus wood-fired pizzas for sustenance. “The dancefloor was rammed for most of the night, so we think people enjoyed it! My feet not so much," Ashley laughs.

icky grins as she recalls arriving at her wedding ceremony: “I couldn’t stop smiling! James looked so lovely and was quite emotional, I was just so excited to finally see him.” Proceeding down the aisle to hymn Myfanwy – a surprise tribute to her Welshborn mother – the bride looked incredible in her Anna Sorrano gown. “I felt like a model! I didn’t think I’d suit sleeves, but the striking neckline, keyhole back and slim-fit silhouette really worked – I felt very special when I was wearing it.” She accessorised simply, with pearl studs, a lace-trimmed veil and a silver necklace, while her nana’s engagement ring was her something old. Her six bridesmaids, including her maid-ofhonour sister, coordinated perfectly with her look, wearing long-sleeved, dark pink midi dresses with nude shoes of their own choice. As professional hair and make-up artists with their own beauty business, it was only natural that Vicky called upon bridesmaids Sara and Kirsty to give everybody on team bride their big-day glow up. “The girls are amazing – they can create any make-up style you want, so I trusted them implicitly.” The bride and her bridesmaids all carried bouquets of pink roses, gypsophila and lush green foliage. In a nod to James’s career as a pro golfer, all of the buttonholes were tied together with golf tees. Steeped in history but with contemporary
styling, Sheffield’s Aston Hall Hotel was an apt choice of venue for these modern-yettraditional soulmates, with the grounds and Virage Suite acting as the perfect blank canvas for their creative vision: “We had a vintage bicycle sign, a putting-green game and a vintage-inspired sweet stand, all made by my dad – what a hero!” The DIY father of the bride even turned his talents to creating a wooden-frame, fairylight-strewn photo booth, which proved popular with guests. The reception tablescapes featured golfinspired centrepieces, wooden hearts and hessian-wrapped jars with roses and candles. After post-ceremony fizz and canapés of fish and chips and bruschetta, friends and family tucked into a laidback barbecue buffet of steak, sausages, chicken, baked potatoes and salads before settling down for the speeches: “The best man, Dean, got into golf specifics, which made sense to only a handful of people, but was all the funnier for it. James’s niece Lucy also surprised us with some stories – she had everyone in stitches with her dry Northern humour.” Live band The Magnetics got the party started with two evening sets, with a DJ taking over to keep the dancefloor packed with guests into the wee hours. Vicky and James went on a minimoon to Wales straight after the big day, but are saving up for their overseas honeymoon. “Thanks to the generosity of our friends, we’re looking to go to Thailand,” Vicky says.

“
he chefs were one of the reasons we fell in love with our venue,” says Jessica. “We wanted food that was ‘us’, that would tie in with our travel-and-adventure theme, and the team at The Outbuildings allowed us to do that. Everything was bespoke and personal to us as a couple – they even used my own recipe to make the Malteser brownies for the dessert table!” Guests were treated to a selection of canapés from ‘around the world’, including Balinese chicken satay lollipops, Welsh lamb rarebit and key-lime crab cups from Florida. And as well as posh burgers and chips, the tables were filled with sharing portions of barbecue pulled pork, truffle mac and cheese, halloumi fries and various vibrant green salads. “Not only that,” adds Jessica, “the team even turned around the whole venue for a post-wedding brunch for 80 guests the following morning!”
The couple’s travel theme was “a perfect representation of who we are,” says Jessica. “And the styling of the venue was second to none. “I knew Ruby, our venue stylist, from school and together we made the whole look happen,” says the bride. “We used globes, vintage books and suitcases, map prints – anything that fitted the theme. Then we added elegant touches, including lots of candles, rose petals, jam jars and a gorgeous flower wall backdrop for the top table.” Jessica and Sam even opted for a dedicated wedding fragrance to scent their venue on the day – The White Company’s Lime & Bay. “The whole place smelled incredible and now this scent will alway remind us of the wedding,” says Jessica. As guests got ready to party the night away, the barn was turned into a dancefloor, with a DJ, saxophonist and spotlights to set the mood. “Dan, our photographer, described the dancefloor as ‘pure chaos’ – I think that says it all!”

“
ur venue surpassed our expectations the moment we saw it,” the bride recalls, looking back on the moment she visited Fairyhill for the first time. “The chic interiors and décor struck a chord with us as soon as we walked in, but it was the venue’s K Room, a glass space with stunning views, that truly blew us away.” It offered something old and something new, and Charlotte and Dan loved that they could put their own stamp on the interiors, using white flowers and green foliage to bring the outside in. “I wanted our guests to walk in, smell the greenery and feel as though they’d stepped into a garden,” she says. Fairyhill’s finer details – the quality glassware, candles, fireplaces, food and wine – were equally divine, and the bride, who admits to being a perfectionist, speaks of her relief and amazement of how smoothly everything was in the lead-up and on the day. “It’s hard to put into words. I underestimated how much effort would have to go into every detail, but Fairyhill blew all my expectations.”
The couple hosted their nuptials at nearby St Rhidian and St Illtyd’s Church, where the bride graced the aisle in a strapless Riki Dalal gown, in keeping with their contemporary, classic big-day theme. They were then played out by a beautiful string quartet from the Welsh National Orchestra, before whisking their party off to the nearby Fairyhill, where the celebrations could truly begin. Entertainment was a huge priority for Charlotte and Dan, and the pair were thrilled with Fairyhill’s enormous state-of-the-art sound system. As well as a live acoustic set on the terrace, a saxophonist, and a wonderful DJ, guests were also surprised with a performance from a group of singing waiters just before dessert was served. “We didn’t have our first dance until 10pm, as we wanted to have the twinkling stars and night’s sky as our backdrop,” Charlotte adds. “Ultimately, though, watching my friends and family enjoy the ceremony, food and entertainment was just amazing. We couldn’t have been more grateful for the effort they made to be part of our special day.”

GRACE & GREG
With the bonny banks of Loch Lomond as its backdrop, this wedding was a traditional Scottish affair PHOTOGRAPHY: ROSS ALEXANDER (ROSSALEXANDERPHOTOGRAPHY.COM)
T
here was never any question of where Greg and Grace would get married – The Cruin, just a stone’s throw from the shores of Loch Lomond – holds so many special memories for the couple. “We used to pop in for a bite to eat, as Greg’s parents live nearby, and would sit there planning our ‘one day’ wedding while looking across the water,” Grace says. And after Greg proposed there, it felt like a natural choice. In an effort to reflect the surrounding landscape, the couple wanted their nuptials to feel authentically Scottish, with elements of the bride’s English heritage thrown into the mix. Grace – who looked divine in Ronald Joyce – carried a bouquet of thistles and roses, while Greg and his groomsmen wore tweed and kilts to match the Scottish hills and heather. The bride walked down the aisle to the tune of Amazing Grace played on the bagpipes, and admits she instantly relaxed the moment she saw Greg at the end of the altar. “I just couldn’t stop smiling. All my nerves from the night before were just gone. He looked so handsome and so happy.” Planning the menu was a wonderfully stress-free experience, too, and taking
Grace’s coeliac disease into account, the venue went above and beyond to make this element of the day as seamless as possible. “The team at The Cruin were amazing to work with, and assured me that everything in the meal was gluten-free, other than the haggis – which would have been exceptionally hard to pull off!” Honey Scottish salmon and raspberry cranachan (a traditional Scottish dessert) were also on the menu, with the couple’s favourite whiskeys and gins used as centrepieces on each table. More than anything, though, Grace and Greg wanted a big day that reflected who they are as individuals. “We were both RAF reservists when we met and we both love flying and aviation, so we surprise everyone with a stunt plane display. They were all so shocked when it happened, and it looked fabulous!” Guests were also entertained with photo mirrors, magicians, a caricaturist, and of course, a Scottish ceilidh, and even Greg took to the bagpipes at one point in the evening. “Everyone loved that, especially the English side of my family, who are less accustomed to the pipes.” says Grace. “And just taking a few moments to reflect on our day and the amazing friends and family we were surrounded by was wonderful.”

“
e toyed with the idea of going to France or Italy to get married, as part of a big summer road trip around Europe, but we ended up doing the complete opposite with a winter wedding in Scotland surrounded by our family and friends,” says Sarah, as she recalls the moment she and groom Gavin began planning their wedding. “Once we’d decided to stay in Scotland, choosing the venue was easy. My jaw hit the floor when we first visited Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute 10 years ago. The vibrancy and opulence – and its incredible art collections – are truly breathtaking. It’s like escaping into another world.” The couple’s humanist ceremony was the start of a relaxed and memorable occasion. The stunning surroundings of Mount Stuart inspired much of the décor, including the celestial-themed stationery and colour scheme, and the gold origami star favours. “Mount Stuart is full of astrological and astronomic references – the marble hall, where the wedding breakfast was held features paintings of all 49 constellations
of the northern hemisphere,” says Sarah. “We picked our favourites, and the talented Laura Henderson created a table plan with illustrations to represent them on each table. “All of the styling was inspired by the venue’s rich interiors, with dark jewel tones and sumptuous velvet,” she adds. Accompanied by their ‘best dog’, Max, the pair celebrated with family and friends, enjoying a locally-sourced Scottish feast which included king scallops and black pudding, chicken in a Highland blue-cheese sauce and haggis bon-bons with whisky cream. Contemporary ceilidh band Sneaky Treacle got the evening’s dancing underway, before guests were treated to a secret firework display. But it was Sarah’s stunning Lihi Hod gown that stole the show – a delicious lace confection that she had stumbled across on Pinterest after already trying on numerous styles. “I loved the old Hollywood glamour of film noir and this dress reminded me so much of that,” Sarah recalls. “The brilliant team at Browns Bride also helped me pick out the perfect veil by Toni Federici to complete the look.”

ith great weather, idyllic settings and, on average, a much smaller bill than weddings in the UK, it’s little wonder more and more couples are choosing to tie the knot further afield. But, naturally, it does take more planning and commitment for all of you than compiling last-minute invites and a quick dash down the M1. Your first port of call? Choosing the right destination. Compare the cost of different resorts, venues and hotels just as you would if you were getting married closer to home. Use weather forecasts and average recorded temperatures to check whether your idyllic escape will be just as perfect when you’re due to say your vows – whether you’ve got your heart set on a snowy white wedding or glorious, unabated sunshine.

LAURA & HARRY
A romantically rustic celebration overlooking the Italian coast was a dream day for this couple PHOTOGRAPHY: CHRIS BARBER (CHRISBARBERPHOTOGRAPHY.CO.UK)
W
ith the help of wedding planners Julie and Emilie of My Secret Italy, Laura and Harry celebrated their big day on the Italian coast, overlooking the beautiful beach of Santa Maria di Castellabate. To tie in with their rustic surroundings, the couple picked out a palette of blush pink, peach and gold, which they highlighted in their choice of outfits and flowers. “With such a beautiful location, we didn’t really need to include an awful lot of decorations – so we included some white lanterns, candles and fairylights, and a ‘welcome’ sign which our florist decorated with flowers,” Laura says. “We also used this as our guestbook for friends and family to write messages on, and now it hangs in our lounge!” After the couple’s 5pm ceremony, the wedding party headed to Il Calesse, a traditional Italian restaurant in the village of Castellabate. “When I described my wedding vision to Julie, she showed me a picture of Il Calesse and I was instantly sold,” Laura recalls. “It was everything I wanted – leafy, rustic and beautifully old! Trees lined the courtyard and it had panoramic views of Santa Maria. I’ll never forget how beautiful it looked when we first arrived.” Guests dined on antipasti and other traditional Italian dishes – spinach and ricotta ravioli, prawn
paccheri pasta, seabass, beef with mozzarella, and tiramisu or almond cake for dessert. Miniature bottles of locally made limoncello were gifted on each table as favours. The bride’s dress perfectly suited the rustic Italian vibe: a slightly smoky flowing skirt with lace bodice and dove-grey velvet ribbon sash. “I fell in love as soon as I saw it,” Laura recalls. “I tried on others but I couldn’t get it out of my head. They say you know as soon as you put a dress on, and I did! It made me feel like a young and carefree bride.” As someone who doesn’t wear many accessories day to day, Laura kept her look simple for her wedding too – opting for a fresh flower crown and a pair of dusky pink sandals from Kurt Geiger. “I was pretty relaxed about my bridesmaids’ outfits too,” Laura adds. “I just asked them to pick dresses that worked with a blush, peach, gold and white theme, and with a little embellishment for extra sparkle! We had a group chat for sharing images of dresses, and in the end they all picked styles from ASOS. They looked gorgeous!” Aside from the look of the day, there were other elements which were particularly personal to the couple, including the idea to walk down the aisle together. “I felt it was quite symbolic that we walked together towards the next and biggest step of our lives,” Laura smiles. “We’re in it together!”

It really was a classic Diet Coke moment where my teenage heart skipped a beat,” laughs Jenna, as she recalls the moment she met new husband Luke for the first time. Later down the line, the pair spent six months travelling south-east Asia. “It’s our happy place,” Jenna smiles. “Hence our decision to get married there.” Determined not to “spend thousands” on the perfect outfit, Jenna found her dream gown in French Connection – a floaty maxi with the dreamiest boho-style sleeves. “It was just £250 and fit perfectly. I made a few alterations to make the back a bit more interesting, but after that, I had the perfect dress,” she reveals. Jenna finished her look with a colourful applique clutch, metallic wedge espadrilles and a pair of shell drop earrings that she found in a local boutique. “I contemplated a silk flower crown but in the end chose fresh flowers instead.” After a legal and equally emotional ceremony in the UK, Jenna and Luke
combined a western and Buddhist service for their Thai beach wedding. “Our celebrant led us through the vows and ring exchange before three Buddhist monks carried out a water blessing,” she recalls. “Being told to embrace each other for a minute and remember that moment always – no matter what challenges we face – was really special.” Naturally, the rest of the wedding – from the food to the décor and everything in between – was led by the local Thai culture. The pair embraced their surroundings with colourful parasols, tropical flowers and a feast of curries, salads, stir-fries and fresh fruit. “As part of our wedding package, Thai dancers performed between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast, then during dinner we played our own music before heading back to the beach for cocktails and to watch the fire dancers,” Jenna recalls. “Then it was on to the banquet room for more dancing and drinks with the resort’s resident DJ.” The couple remained in Thailand for another two weeks after the big day, exploring the different islands. “Our favourite was Koh Lipe, where we stayed at the beautiful Idyllic Concept Resort.”
