o all visitors to London this August, a warm welcome back! The city’s shops, restaurants and theatres are waiting for you, and in this issue we give you a curated tour of what’s new and exciting in the West End in our summer shopping guide and What’s On pages. With its cool cafés and candy-coloured houses, Notting Hill is a London favourite. Long-standing resident, the florist Nikki Tibbles gives her tips on where to go out in W11, plus there’s advice from property experts. We also look at homes for sports enthusiasts, near golf clubs, swimming ponds and padel tennis courts. Finally, in our senior living focus, we explore the superb options, both in and outside the capital, for Londoners seeking the finer things in life in their autumn years.

DR EWOMA UKELEGHE ON COLLAGEN Collagen supplements are a way of investing in your future self. Small consistent steps over a sustained period, add up and multiply to produce long-lasting results. It’s the most abundant protein in the body, and it’s responsible for skin strength and structure. This manifests in a glowing complexion. Marine collagen, like the one use by Vida Glow, is absorbed into the bloodstream via the gut, in the form of its metabolite, amino acid. It is then distributed to the dermis, giving the skin the raw materials to create new collagen and trigger the body’s natural production of collagen. Marine collagen supplements are recommended for everyone, but particularly, for time-poor women who are 25 years and above, wanting to combat signs of premature ageing from the inside out. Take one sachet of Vida Glow Natural Collagen daily, simply adding them to your daily water intake for extra flavour. Vida Glow is available at Harrods and Selfridges. uk.vidaglow.com
INTERVIEW MY FIRST LONDON HOME
IAN MCCULLOCH The former television executive turned ‘30 years of media booze training’ to his advantage in creating Silent Pool Gin
It all seemed so optimistic in the late eighties, anything seemed possible. Mobile phones weren’t widespread so if you wanted to disappear for a few drinks with some pals no one, especially work, could find you. Media watering holes at the time were the Carlisle Arms in Soho, the Carpenters Arms next to Saatchi & Saatchi and the Red Lion, just off Jermyn Street. My favourite restaurant was Manzi’s just off Leicester Square: lobster salad and a bottle of Sancerre, a few drinks in the Cork & Bottle across the square, then back to the office to get some paperwork done.
I was born in Kingston upon Thames, then part of Greater London, and am very much of south-of-the-river stock. My parents split in the late seventies, and my father bought a house in Upbrook Mews, just off Praed Street in Paddington. At that time I worked for a car dealers in Thames Ditton, just up the river from Kingston, so I’d reverse commute out of the city. My first London job was as a sales assistant at London Weekend Television, starting in

1980. I was selling airtime to a group of ad agencies’ media departments. It was a great job and introduced me to expenseaccount entertaining. LWT was bought by Granada in the late nineties and I ended up as commercial director, responsible for all of the broadcast income, among other areas. I exited what was then the merged and consolidated ITV plc in the summer of 2007. I was living in a duplex flat in Hanover Steps which is in a
After leaving television, I wanted to create something that was fun, responded to advertising and could export. I looked at fragrances, but with 30 years of media booze training under my belt, gin felt much closer to my heart. By this time I’d moved out of London, had a family and migrated down to
Cobham. I wanted to work locally and that became a key driver. I wrote a PowerPoint exploring the idea, met some great people who shared the vision and so we just started to make it real. We found a site owned by the Duke of Northumberland at the Silent Pool, Surrey, engaged a worldclass design company, Seymour Powell, and we built the distillery. We had no idea how well it would go, and were swept up by the gin boom. We now have a bigger, very talented team, and are distributed across the UK and 45 countries around the world. There’s a long and rich history of gin and London. From the 1600s, gin was consumed in great quantities because water wasn’t safe and wine was expensive, so it was a choice of beer or gin. Now we’ve had another boom and gin has never been more popular, with the London Dry style – nothing to do with London, it simply means no additives – being renowned for its quality around the world. My story relies heavily on luck and chance. The skill is trying to play the cards you’re dealt to the best effect. Don’t be afraid to follow your hunches, but don’t bet everything all at once. There’s an old military saying, ‘Time spent in reconnaissance is rarely wasted’. L silentpooldistillers.com
