I went to art school as I was planning on being a painter. I soon le , but was ge ng through life wor ing on ortobello oad, selling second-hand clothing.

I used to read the obituaries and go to house sales, looking for clothes. f you new where to loo in the papers, you could nd really interesting characters who you would really get to now through their wardrobe.

If it was an admiral, you’d know it o to e ll o e l uniforms. city ban er of some level at that moment in time chances are you d nd a load of nderson and heppard suits.

A friend of mine persuaded me to open a store in 1991. t was a tremendous shoc because the responsibility of owning a store

Recently celebrating its tenth birthday, the Belgravia flagship represents Porschen’s extraordinary success. The entrepreneur and award-winning cake designer has taken London by storm, with a second opening in Chelsea, a Peggy Porschen Academy, and legions in Instagram followers.

“The funny thing is that we weren’t really allowed to paint it pink at the time as Grosvenor had strict guidelines about everything being painted in that shade of cream,” says Porschen, “but pink won in the end” – and so set in place the brand’s identity. “We originally had the pink façade with brown awnings because I envisaged it as chocolate, strawberries and cream. I was looking for something more elegant, and pink makes me happy, it’s warm and friendly, so we just embraced it and people like us for it.”

The clever use of pink has turned Porschen’s parlours into beacons for Instagram photographers, all keen to snap Porschen’s latest seasonal floral garlands and frosted swirl cupcakes. A simple marketing strategy, but never part of the plan, says Porschen. It was a happy coincidence in 2015 where Porschen realised the power the platform could have.

“We decorated our shop for the first time for Chelsea Flower Show and the difference it made instantly was enormous. We had lots of locals coming in thinking we were new.” Porschen’s cafés become a London landmark and the shop became a thing to do on toursits’ to-do-lists. “The moment it really hit us was when my husband and I hailed a taxi. The driver told us that our shop was in The Knowledge. ‘You know you’ve made it when you’re in The Knowledge,’ he said.”

Instagram has certainly been the catalyst for Porschen and her cupcakes, but the skill involved in the craft is something Porschen hasn’t compromised on. “Something I’ve really learned through the pandemic is that now that the tourists aren’t here, we depend on the locals, who actually care less about Instagram and more about the food so it’s really important that we haven’t lost that essence and quality.”

Quality is the result of years of hard work at the prestigious culinary school, Le Corden Bleu, where the Cologne-born Porschen excelled. “I found it quite hard

I N T ERV I EW coming from overseas. I had school English and a little French but I realised that I’ve got to work hard, and that if I try I can succeed. It taught me to be resilient, thrive for consistency and to never give up.”

Porschen’s breakthrough moment came while working in luxury events, when she had the chance to create a commission for Sir Elton John. “I was asked to create 500 Fabergé eggs for his tiara ball. At that moment I felt that when you get an opportunity like that you’ve got to grab it.” Other landmark commissions included the afternoon tea collaboration with The Lanesborough Hotel. “It was a really proud moment for me to be approached.”

Even further back, and Porschen attributes her deep-rooted love of patisserie to her early years in Germany.

“I fondly remember growing up with the smell of marzipan, nuts and chocolate,” she says. “Around Christmas we’d do cinnamon stars and Spritzgebäck – a piped butter cookie dipped in chocolate – and deliver them to friends. I think I was 14 years old when I baked my first cake and I remember this feeling of achievement. It really instilled in me that baking creates happiness and it’s something to share.”

The last year has proved incredibly successful for Porschen and her team, with customers ordering cakes for loved ones in lockdown online. “We’ve noticed the online business thrive. We are a go-to place if it has to be something special. You give love with cakes.”

Porschen has been encouraged by people taking to the kitchen. “I think baking has given people at home a lot of therapy and peace and it gives you a sense of achievement doing something with your own hands. It’s definitely an emotive thing for me. Even now, it’s a business, it can be very busy and hectic at times, but I always go back into baking. Even if the to-do list is long and I feel like I’m never going to finish, the moment I’m icing a cake, it really relaxes me.”

Porschen has been working on recipes for her book, which encourages amateur bakers to reach her level of perfection.

“My main tips for those wanting to dabble in patisserie is simple, always read the recipe first and pre-measure everything because there is nothing worse than when you have to go back and scoop something into a baking tin. Take time and don’t rush.

From penthouses overlooking the Thames to Cornish cottages, the rush to ‘blue space’ is on, writes Alexandra Goss

ur psychological response to water is a powerful one.

Researchers have found that gentle ripples, crashing waves and a reflected vista are good for us, boosting our mood and helping to soothe negative feelings. So it is little wonder that the Covid pandemic has created a rush for homes near blue space – both in London and beyond.

Demand from buyers for UK properties on or by the water is around 50 per cent higher than pre-pandemic levels, according to Richard Speedy, head of waterside at Strutt & Parker. “There has been so much 30 The London Magazine

focus in the past year on the desire for green spaces, but the draw of blue space is just as powerful,” he says. “Living by water can have real, positive benefits for the mind and the body.”

There is a profound effect on the bank balance, too: buyers currently pay an average of 51 per cent more for a waterfront property compared with one that is not by the water, according to Knight Frank. There is an average premium of 73 per cent for a property located by an estuary, 72 per cent for one by a lake or loch and 66 per cent for a coastal home.

Being by the water is particularly soughtafter in urban locations, where space is at a premium. Research into the prices of second-hand flats by Savills reveals that, along the 27-mile stretch of the Thames in London between Teddington Lock and the Royal Docks, buyers are willing to pay an average of 18.2 per cent – or £650,000 – more for a home located within 100 metres of the riverbank, compared with those up to 1km away.

from British buyers – especially if they have the opportunity to commute by boat when widespread office working resumes.

Areas with Thames Clippers piers include Chelsea Harbour, where Waterview in partnership with Dexters is selling a two-bedroom flat for £1.695m, or Canary Wharf, where the 75-storey Landmark Pinnacle, on the edge of the district, will be London’s tallest residential tower. Homes here cost from £559,000 through JLL. Richard Pine-Coffin, director of residential development at JLL, argues that the interest in London riverside living has

been enhanced by Covid as people spend more time at home and their environment becomes even more important. “It isn’t often considered, but being on the water offers improved air quality, plus your river views are protected from further development,” he explains. Views are crucial, agrees Simon Barry, head of new developments at Harrods Estates. He recently sold an apartment in Southbank Place, a luxury scheme in Waterloo, to a buyer who paid a 25 per cent premium for a river-facing home versus an identical unit with a city view. Sales of homes further along the Thames to the west, especially in

Henley and Marlow, have exploded since the pandemic began, says Giles Davidson, senior head of sales at Hamptons in Marlow, with buyers placing offers over the asking price on properties before they even reach the open market. “Many of these are second homes,” he says. “These buyers tend to have their main residence in the city and are looking for a second home to escape to for weekend breaks, though many of them spent Covid lockdowns here.”

months to March 2021 compared to the five-year average. Also, of all the second homes outside the capital bought in this period, 20 per cent were by the water, the highest proportion for 13 years. Some of the most popular locations include Chichester, Salcombe and Poole Harbour, as well as Cornish spots like St Ives.

Shoreside locations are so hot that beach huts are going on sale for over £1m. Knight Frank is selling an immaculate waterfront apartment on the beach at Porthmeor, St Ives in Cornwall for £930,000.

Bailey, head of national waterfront at Knight Frank. “In the past year, we’ve seen ‘raw’ coastal property – that on a rugged waterfront setting overlooking the sea – surge in popularity, especially as people look for greater space, or a connection with nature,” he says, adding that there is competitive bidding on many properties, leading to properties selling for well over the asking price. At Fowey in Cornwall, The Old Sawmills offers unrivalled privacy as it is only accessible by boat or on foot.

Thought to be the inspiration for The Wind in the Willows, in recent years it has been used as a recording studio by Robert Plant, Muse and Oasis. On the open market for the first time in 40 years, Savills Exeter office is seeking offers over £2.25m.

With overseas travel constrained and another summer of UK staycations on the horizon, many buyers of waterside homes are looking for properties they can easily rent out – in some cases for huge premiums. One house in the Lakes by Yoo development in the Cotswolds let for £40,000 per week last summer. The fact some buyers are choosing to up sticks and relocate to coastal locations such as Devon is great for the local economy, says SarahJane Bingham-Chick, director of residential at Savills in Exeter. “And when you could go surfing on a Monday morning before breakfast, work from your laptop with a view of the sea and eat fresh seafood from a beach hut watching the sun go down whenever you want, why wouldn’t you?” L

Water colours Let the view inspire your waterside home interiors, writes Alexandra Goss

W

hen it comes to decorating a home by the water, the key is to embrace the location.

Joanna Wood, founder of the eponymous design house, advocates neutral curtains in a cream linen and a plain wall finish to let the view do the talking. “All shades of blue and aqua look lovely beside water,” she adds.

Other natural colours such as greens, whites and stony greys also complement watery surroundings, and work equally well in a London penthouse or in a coastal cottage. The Herefordshire holiday home on the River Wye that appears in the Netflix series Sex Education was overhauled

by Farrow & Ball to great effect using a palette of Studio Green, Shaded White and, fittingly, Dead Salmon.

Choosing water-inspired artworks is a lovely way to speak to the setting, though beware taking the theme too far, warns the interior designer Naomi Astley Clarke: “You can have a few water-themed trinkets, but no decorative rubber rings or ropes on the walls, please!”

the joinery echoes the works of the Dutch artist Mondrian and his focus on geometry, while the monochromatic finishes help reflect the waterside location.

Wood is a great way to add texture and is also practical if the property is a second home you are planning to rent out, says Alisa Bowen, director at Inside Studio, an accredited member of the Society of British and International Design (SBID). “Rustic materials disguise any damage well as it forms part of their character,” she explains.

For rentals, Sarah Ward, co-founder of Ward & Co, says you need to strike a balance between beauty and practicality, especially if you want to attract discerning clients. Go for good-quality sofas, rugs and bed throws that wear well, and spend less on breakables such as glassware and crockery. “Hard floors work well for seaside properties where walking boots and dirty wellies are regular,” she adds.

The outside space in a waterfront home is crucial, says the designer Emma SimsHilditch, with durability of materials paramount. The Hayburn garden seating collection from Neptune is made of allweather wicker. Planters allow you to introduce greenery, which is particularly

important on a London balcony, while plenty of (washable) blankets and throws – and a fire pit – are a must.

Sometimes, it pays to go against the rules. In a holiday home in the Dorset resort of Sandbanks overhauled by Emma Deterding, founder and creative director of Kelling Designs, there are orange walls and raspberry-coloured chairs. The bright hues sing on a sunny day and bring much-needed cheer when the sea and sky are grey. L

o you remember the heatwave of 2018? Harry Kane and the England team were on a mission in the FIFA World Cup, and the then US President Donald Trump was in town for a state visit. As temperatures hit 35C in central London, residents were trapped in a cycle of sleepless nights and airless days, with melting roads and flash power cuts as air conditioning went into overtime.

According to the Met Office, heatwaves similar to 2018 are now 30 times more likely to occur due to human-induced climate change. So, are you prepared for a hot summer in the city?

THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP

No two people sleep in exactly the same way, nor are our sleep patterns the same each night. However, “every cell in your body gets a total repair if it’s given the sleep it needs,” say the experts at Hästens (hastens.com). Your sleep cycle follows your body temperature cycle and, in the evening, your temperature falls. Sleeping in a cool environment – the optimum temperature is between 16C and 18C – helps you get to sleep more quickly and easily, while a darkened room, free of the blue light emitted by electronic devices, will encourage the production of the hormone melatonin, which regulates sleep.

In the battle to cope with the heat that saps sleep, ventilation and cooling are key.

Opening all of the windows at the same time, day or night, is not necessarily the answer, especially if there is no breeze.

“The NHS advises we shut the windows completely, but many experts disagree,” say air-conditioning experts ADK.co.uk.

“Instead, keep the windows open just a crack to let hot air out and to provide a steady flow of ventilation that will help keep your skin cool.”

Fatima Bangura, showroom manager and head of design at Loft Living (loft-living.co.uk), advises “cold water bottles under your pillow, and blackout lining which will keep the heat out and also allow you not to be disturbed by any outside night lights.”

Using your home’s natural stack effect to evacuate hot air from bottom to top is also very effective, says architect Rodrigo Moreno Masey of Moreno Masey (morenomasey.com). “A rooflight at the top of the staircase, for instance, will draw hot air up the stairs and fresh air is pulled into the house. Be careful if the window or rooflight faces south or west, however, as that can draw more heat inwards.”

What you sleep on, and in, is as vital to a cool night’s sleep as your surroundings.

Sports at schools are evolving with activities, from golf to fencing, teaching students valuable life lessons

T

he sporting landscape at school is changing. Alongside traditional team activities that value competition, there is a move towards sports that help children develop a positive attitude to exercise, teach ideas of teamwork, and ultimately help students learn from failure.

“Winning is not the primary aim for us, it’s about a healthy lifestyle and understanding our strengths and weaknesses,” says Chris Ramsey, headmaster at Whitgift, an independent school for boys in Croydon. “Every boy will learn to fence in Year 7, for example, so that everyone starts a new sport on a level playing field. Sport is a great support for academic success, and a great outlet and social cement, and I like to think it’s that attitude, rather than team victories, which sees our provision so admired.”

Golf is one example that teaches more than just fitness, with pupils learning valuable life skills on the course. At Hurstpierpoint College, a co-ed day and boarding school in West Sussex, golf is valued because of its inclusivity. “From first-timers to international players, all pupils have access to year-round coaching

and practice,” says the school’s head of marketing Gillian Luis-Ravelo. “It is a games option for all pupils, with fixtures played all year round. With its countryside location, Hurst is fortunate to have multiple golf courses within reach, and students are able to practice their skills at a local golf centre and driving range just seven minutes away (by minibus).”

Elite players have more game-focused tuition, concentrating on shot making.

At Mill Hill School in northwest London, golf is used as an educational tool to help pupils on their journey through school life and into the wider world. The school has a golf swing suite, home to the golf simulator, and pupils can use their free periods and downtime to play while receiving coaching from the director of Golf and PGA advanced golf professional, Dean Halford. “The pupils can play golf in matches and competitions against other schools and we have seen success across the board both nationally and internationally,” says Halford. “Golf is a game for life and the sooner you start the more likely you are to enjoy the benefits. It teaches many things – integrity, sportsmanship, manners, etiquette and

patience. We teach the pupils to embrace these skills as they move through life.”

Prep school children are also hitting the fairways. The children at Cottesmore School, a prep boarding school in West Sussex, enjoy the school’s nine-hole golf course, affectionately known as ‘The Ostrich Feather’, with English teacher and PGA golfer, Charlie Gold. Headmaster Tom Rogerson says, “Golf provides the children with the opportunity to

learn from their mistakes, to practise the idea of growth mindset and incremental gains, to overcome obstacles and improve their game.”

Windlesham House School in the South Downs is also fortunate to have a ninehole golf course onsite. Children receive expert coaching from pre-prep upwards.

“We have a genuine ‘have a go’ ethos at Windlesham and all pupils are encouraged to get involved in all activities, including golf, swimming, tennis and athletics,” says Ben Evans, the headmaster. “While it is essential to have a healthy spirit of competitiveness combined with inclusivity, 54 The London Magazine

The school’s new state-of-the-art sports centre includes a six-lane swimming pool and sports hall equipped with indoor cricket nets and indoor tennis for wet days.

At Cranleigh School, a co-ed day and boarding school in Surrey, the school golf course is used throughout the year by pupils from 7-18 years olds and is

well supported by the Old Cranleighan Golf Society. “It is a well-used and very convenient facility for those learning the basics of the game right through to those who are working on lowering their handicap,” says head of PE Sarah Greenwood. “Cranleigh School has had an exciting involvement with the Open Golf Championships for over 30 years, we have taken a team each year to work behind the scenes on the iconic yellow scoreboard on the 18th green.”

Golf is part of the impressive multi-sport experience on offer at Millfield School.

The co-ed boarding school in Somerset strives to “encourage all students to engage in a diverse range of sports, whether an aspiring international athlete or for recreational purposes,” says director of sport Scott Drawer. “We recognise the importance of having a healthy relationship with sport which endorses significant mental and physical health benefits.

t is a little later than usual and its famous grandstands will be for limited numbers, but the annual fiesta of strawberries and cream coupled with world class tennis that is Wimbledon Fortnight makes a triumphant return this summer.

The Championships is the world’s oldest tennis tournament, and still the most prestigious. It has shone an international spotlight over this south west London suburb since 1877 – with gaps during the First and Second World Wars, and last year owing to the pandemic.

SW19 itself is a neighbourhood of two halves: picturesque and extremely upmarket Wimbledon Village and the comparatively workaday Victorian streets of Wimbledon Town.

Carr adds: “A lot of places in London call themselves villages, but Wimbledon really does feel like a village.”

WHY ICONIC?

Wimbledon was originally an actual village, surrounded by royal lands, which became a popular second home location for wealthy 17th merchants and minor aristocrats. Wimbledon as we know it today evolved in tandem with the railways.

The first Wimbledon Station opened in 1838, speculative developers moved in, and the population rocketed.

Thirty years later the All England Croquet Club was founded, and eight years after that the new-fangled game of lawn tennis was invented. The club eagerly embraced the sport, renaming itself the All-England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club and hosting its first championship in 1877. The first winner, Spencer Gore, was cheered on by around 200 spectators and

won 12 guineas and a silver cup. Women were first allowed to compete in 1884, but it was not until 1968 that professional players were admitted. Ball boys have worked at the tournament for around 100 years, with girls being added to the teams in 1977 (although not allowed on centre court until 1985). For their efforts they are rewarded with a modest salary of around £15 per day, a certificate, a can of used balls, and a programme.

In a typical year some 23 tonnes of strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream are consumed during Wimbledon.

rated “outstanding” by Ofsted. For older pupils all the state senior schools are rated either “good” or “outstanding”.

In the private sector there is a choice of Wimbledon High for girls, or King’s College School for boys (with girls joining in the sixth form). KCS, as it is known, is one of the top performing schools in the country.

Tennis aside, Wimbledon is a very well-resourced place to live. The New Wimbledon Theatre has a glorious auditorium and a programme of drama, comedy and dance. Open space, with two commons and several parks, is plentiful.

Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of tennis clubs, and excellent sports facilities from beach volleyball in Wimbledon Park to riding lessons or golf. Wimbledon and Wimbledon Park are on the District Line, while overground services from Wimbledon to Waterloo station takes just under 20 minutes.

Families flock to Wimbledon thanks to its high performing state and private schools. For younger students the Hall School Wimbledon, Willington School, and Wimbledon Common Preparatory School are popular, while in the state sector there are half a dozen primaries

Alex Philo, a partner at Knight Frank, says the market for Wimbledon’s large houses has benefitted greatly from the pandemic-inspired demand for space, indoor and outdoor. Hotspots are in the South Park Gardens area, just north of the Broadway, and close to the Bishop Gilpin C of E Primary School, where families pay between £800,000 and £1m for a three-bedroom terrace. The grid of streets around Wimbledon Park is in demand, thanks to Wimbledon Park Primary School, and four-bedroom properties sell for between £1.1m and £1.2m. “The last four houses I have sold around there have gone to sealed bids,” says Philo. In the village, family houses shoot up to between

£2m or £7m, although you could spend £10m plus on a large house overlooking the common. Top streets include Marryat Road, Highbury Road, Lancaster Road, Burghley Road, and The Grange. Sweet two-bedroom cottages can command £1m.

Buyers include families moving up the hill from Wimbledon Town, and others decamping from Fulham, Chelsea, and Kensington. Buyers from Hong Kong and China are particularly interested in large, modern houses in the village.

Renting out your home during the Championships can earn a decent windfall.

Return to the city

As workers are lured back to the capital for a couple of nights a week, the market for pieds-à-terre and rental flats is springing to life, writes Zoe Dare Hall

ondoners have a sparkle in their eyes – and it’s not just because the sun’s out. It’s the sheer, if unlikely, thrill of spending the odd day or two a week in the office again, rediscovering those pre-pandemic joys.

It’s a drip-feed rather than a rush of workers returning to office life at present, “as companies test out a variety of hybrid working models,” says Jo Leverett, head of international residential at Cluttons. But their arrival is having a knock-on effect on demand for centrally-located apartments within walking distance of their desks.

“Wapping, St Katharine’s Dock and Shad Thames are ideal as you can walk to the City or Canary Wharf,” says Leverett.

“They are pricing their future commute into their decision-making,” says Lauren Hatcliff, lettings director at JLL in Canary Wharf. She reports April 2021 enquiries were 88 per cent higher than in April 2019.

“We are seeing people moving into London from the Home Counties, upsizing from West London or moving from conversions to something purpose-built,” she says.

Canary Wharf’s pet-friendly schemes

are proving popular too, following the puppy-buying boom during the pandemic.

At Vertus’s 8 Water Street, pet-owning tenants have forged a strong sense of community, having all moved in just as the first lockdown struck. Buyers are out in force too – typically first-timers fuelled by the stamp duty extension, says JLL agent Mark Montes – and they are buying as a

In other central areas, the pied-à-terre market is coming to the fore. Harry Buchanan at Jackson Stops is seeing a growing number of such buyers in Pimlico

and Westminster. “They are people who need to be in central London a couple of nights a week, having re-located to the countryside during the pandemic,” he says.

“We’re also seeing boomerang buyers who rented in the countryside during lockdown and now want urban living again as bars and restaurants re-open.”

Television Centre in White City is also a popular choice among pied-à-terre buyers, with numerous residents making a beeline for the A40 on Friday morning to head to their other home in the Cotswolds. “They want London locations that are amenityrich, provide a sense of community and easy access to business centres and key rural locations,” says Victoria Allner, associate director at Strutt & Parker.

And though uncertainty still hangs over foreign travel, James Staite, sales director at Dexters reports his busiest month in May since February 2020, including clients from Switzerland, USA and Europe.

“They’re all travelling for business and feel that now is a great time to buy,” he says.

For now, though, the predominance of domestic buyers looks set to continue. L

L

ondoners have a warm but complicated relationship with their river – which they always call the river, never the Thames. Maybe since, right from the start, this stretch of water was central to the existence of the city’s inhabitants.

The first Celtic settlements seem to have sprung up in the locations now known as Cornhill and Ludgate Hill because the Thames was navigable nearby. But, while the river was a boon, it also appears to have inspired fear. The earliest Londoners named it tamasa, ‘dark river’ in their language. The name was Latinised by the Romans into Thamesis.

Nowadays we are more likely to extol the river’s beauty than its usefulness – most of us have a favourite view from a bridge, or office block. My favourite is the vista from the top floor of City Hall, magical on a cold, clear night. Many also have a favourite painting of the Thames from among the works of Canaletto, Turner, Monet or Whistler.

But, while homes with a Thames view attract a premium – data from Knight Frank and Hamptons show an uplift of as much as 21-23 per cent and an average price of £1.03m – is this reflected in the concern that we show for our river?

I would argue not, and that we are paying the consequences of this inconsistency in our relationship.

Richmond-upon-Thames may be rated London’s happiest place to live, thanks to pleasures such as strolling by Quinlan Terry’s array of classical riverside buildings. But other bits of 20th and early 21st century development along

The wrangling over Hammersmith Bridge underlines the need for a River Ambassdor the river’s banks are less than lovely and already showing wear and tear. Should we have agitated for the best examples of the architecture of our era, built in materials more resilient to the winds that blow off the river? Absolutely.

Our complacency is matched by our lack of concern about the under-exploitation of the river as transport, despite the Uberboat Thames Clipper service. We should demand an overarching strategy for the river’s preservation and promotion, the Hammersmith Bridge saga being the most obvious example of the need for such a programme. The bridge, closed for two

years because of structural faults, is set to be reopened, but only to pedestrians, in mid-summer. The wrangling over the responsibility for repairs between Whitehall, City Hall and the local council – which, through an accident of history, owns the bridge – underlines the need for a River Ambassador, a key government official to be the Thames’s champion.

The role would include not only an oversight of river crossings, but also ensuring the best housing is built close to the river, while also making sure that these communities are bustling, rather than balefully isolated.

The advent of containerisation in the 1960s may have removed much of the commercial traffic, but the river’s heritage is as much about entertainment and sociability as trade. In the 19th century, before the river was narrowed in order to build the Embankment and the sewage system beneath it, frost fairs were staged in winter. The Illuminated Bridges project, in which nine bridges have become a glorious artwork, should be the start of a drive to make us turn our eyes back to our river and celebrate it.

May the value we place on our river be equal to the amount that we are willing to pay to live close it. During the pandemic, we gained a new passion for our parks, perceiving they were essential to our wellbeing. We should foster the same appreciation of our river – which is now, by the way, one of the cleanest in the world. The silt on its bed means that its colour will always be dark, but for me, this only adds to its timeless and mysterious allure. L
