"SEE YOU THERE!" “I’m delighted to be hosting this year’s show, alongside Sam Whaley and fellow Olympian Annie Lush. I have such fond memories of visiting the show as a child with my parents and now I’m really looking forward to taking my own kids to experience its unique buzz. Dinghy sailing really does offer a world of opportunity. I’ve been very fortunate to have sailing in my life, from learning at Queen Mary reservoir, to representing Great Britain competing at two Olympic Games. It has taken me all over the world, making friends for life, and now, having retired from Olympic sailing, I’m starting another journey with my children. It’s a sport we can all do together. With more on offer than ever before it’s going to be a fantastic weekend and Sam, Annie and I look forward to seeing you there.” Sarah Ayton Double Olympic gold medallist

A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY Double Olympic gold medallist Sarah Ayton, British Sailing Team member Sam Whaley and Sailability sailor Hannah Shelmerdine all share their stories on how dinghy sailing gave them skills for life 8

RYA DINGHY SHOW 2020

SAILING TEACHES YOU TO BE DIVERSE, WHETHER THAT’S BEING PART OF A TEAM, COPING WITH DEFEAT OR HOW TO GET THE BEST OF YOURSELF

A

s a double Olympic gold medallist, performance coach, motivational speaker and a mum now rediscovering the grassroots family fun the sport offers, Sarah Ayton has seen first-hand how sailing can open up a world of opportunities for all ages. “Sailing requires technical and tactical skills, as well as a physical ability to be able to adapt to the constantly changing weather and environment – all of these skills are transferable, not only for high-level sport but also for business and life,” says Sarah. “Sailing teaches you to be diverse, whether that’s being part of a team, coping with defeat or how to get the best of yourself in terms of psychology. During the time I’ve been away from competitive sailing it’s been quite an eye-opener seeing how much I really draw on my experiences of racing in a boat.” Sarah is now starting to see some of the positive influences gained from sailing

on her own young family, Oscar (7) and Thomas (10), who sails an Optimist at RYA Zone Squad level. “When Thomas competes he might be on the water for up to five hours; he has to ensure he has the right clothes and kit, eat and drink on the water, get to the start line on time and make his own choices around the racecourse. “It’s great how sailing teaches him to be so responsible for himself and the chance to develop confidence and independence at such a young age. It’s also really good for school and friendships and all of those lovely things we gain from our sport.” Thomas has declared he’d love to be an Olympian too, but Sarah says she is trying to keep the fun factor, without it being too serious too young. “It’s about giving children the freedom to explore, discover and push their boundaries without pressure. Sailing is great for that. They can go out in a boat and not have to listen to anyone else!

“They can make their own decisions; sometimes they get it wrong and then discover how to learn from it. “Thomas often talks to me about his perfect race, as if I’ve never sailed a boat before, which I absolutely love. It’s great to see kids just go out and enjoy it.” Sarah first developed her own passion for sailing as a child at Queen Mary Sailing Club, near London, after a friend of the family introduced her and her brother to the sport. Although her parents didn’t sail, the club offered a warm welcome and it became the place they would all enjoy spending time every weekend. Now a member of Chichester Yacht Club, Sarah is creating opportunities and memories for the next generation of her family. “Some of the best times for us as a young family have been in the summer, when we’ll rig a couple of Optimists and I’ll borrow the club Topper and we’ll all go out and race each other and mess around. The boys will want to bombard me on the Topper and we capsize! We get the paddleboard out as well… it’s just actionpacked days of adventure and fun! We’re all 100 per cent relaxed and just enjoying sailing or being in the water having a really good family time,” says Sarah. “All our holidays revolve around sailing too. It’s something we can do together as we’re all pretty equal. I love being in the front of the Oppie with Oscar – he’s the boss, even at seven! I sit there and do what I’m told. They also can hang out with their grandparents at the club – another aspect of sailing that can bring really special moments. As a family we can really enjoy the sport together and enjoy doing something that’s so pure and fresh and healthy.” RYA DINGHY SHOW 2020

A career on the water

W

ith an interest and talent for both sailing and technology, show co-host, Sam Whaley, found himself having to choose between two very different career paths. Nine months into an apprenticeship with Microsoft, he decided, at the age of 19, to leave and take up full-time sailing, with no funding – just a mountain of determination. “It was at a time when I was in the Laser RYA Youth Squad,” says Sam. “Sailing got pretty serious and I realised that if I ever wanted to get into the British Sailing Team I was going to have to leave Microsoft.” Six months later, in 2016, he was successful in qualifying for the team and, although he still has to live at the family home in Swanage to make ends meet, Sam has gained a wealth of experience to guarantee future success both on and off the water.

“Joining the team made a massive difference,” says Sam of his sailing results. “I qualified for my first gold fleet at an international event in 2015, and by 2017 I was fourth in the Laser Under-21 Europeans and fifth at the Laser Under-21 Worlds.” It’s been a steep upwards course. For the last two years Sam has been competing at a senior level – where he is now on the verge of a breakthrough performance on the Olympic class circuit. However, the two-time Laser National Champion was, by his own admission, a later-comer to competitive sailing. “I only jumped into a Pico at my home club of Swanage Sailing Club at the age of 12 because my younger brother, Ben, was good at it and I wanted to beat him at something!” he says with a laugh. Having skipped competing seriously

I REALISED THAT IF I EVER WANTED TO GET INTO THE BRITISH SAILING TEAM I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO LEAVE MICROSOFT Sam Whaley

10

RYA DINGHY SHOW 2020

in any of the junior classes, Sam’s first big championship was at the age of 14, when he finished a respectable 22nd in a 70-strong fleet at the Laser 4.7 Nationals in Weymouth. He then successfully set about getting selected for the RYA Laser 4.7 National Squad, subsequently being rejected multiple times for selection as he progressed through the Laser Radial, before settling in the Laser Standard. “I gradually progressed from being ‘just selected’ to ‘comfortably selected’ for squads and then quite quickly made a substantial jump in the Standard before I got on the British Sailing Team two years later. It’s been quite a different journey to most peoples!” Along the way he’s picked up numerous other skills, including time-management, budgeting and risk management, and has travelled the world representing GB at European and world championships. His social media posts include a picture of him sailing under the iconic Golden Gate Bridge at a training camp in San Francisco. Sam says he’s now on a mission to develop his sailing by getting “as skilled as possible in every class I can get my hands on”. This has included foiling in the family Wazp and recently competing in an RS200 at the Endeavour Trophy, finishing fourth with his brother, a 470 sailor and also a member of the British Sailing Team. Sam will be celebrating his 23rd birthday at the RYA Dinghy Show and is committed to the 2024 Olympic cycle of training, with a determined goal to win gold at the Paris Games, where the sailing will be held from Marseille. Along the way he is maintaining his love of all things tech and coding. “I build websites for people and I’m trying to develop an app to enhance how we debrief our sessions and analyse our performance. I get such a buzz out of creating things and seeing what I make come to life. Hopefully, I’ll be able to integrate my coding and sailing skills more in the future, which is really exciting.”

More Than Sailing

D

iscovering sailing has transformed Hannah Shelmerdine’s outlook in life, from one of loneliness and isolation to a world of possibilities, freedom and friendships. Hannah describes herself as a “disabled extreme sportswoman”. But this wasn’t always the case. With acute Cerebral Palsy Hannah needs 24-hour care, and after leaving education, found herself becoming increasingly depressed. She recalls her days as a seemingly endless loop of daytime TV or shopping with carers. “Eventually I was so unwell, I became desperate. Then my sister suggested sailing. I’d never seen a sailing boat before so I had no idea, but I just thought I’d go and see if I liked it.” They went along to Bolton Sailing Club in the summer of 2016 and Hannah says that on the very same day – with the ‘can-do’ ethos the RYA’s Sailability programme for disabled people is renowned for – she was taken out in a boat. “I really enjoyed it and even though I’m visually impaired the sensory experience was great. For the first time in my life I felt free of my disability and all its restrictions. I left my wheelchair behind. Being out in the fresh air was just wonderful. “They said I could work towards sailing qualifications. And then, as I was having drinks at the bar, I thought: ‘I could make friends here’. Suddenly there were all these possibilities. “I was back the following week and joined the club!” Hannah helms a double-handed boat with a crew and in light winds can sail single-handed with the aid of a powerboat driver alongside to give directions. She has only limited use of her left hand and is able to adjust the sails and steering using specially adapted controls. During her first season at the club, Hannah began to learn how to race, competing at the RYA Sailability Multiclass Regatta at Rutland Water two years running, and then on open waters for the first time in 2019 at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. “You compete but it’s with your friends,” says Hannah about her racing. “We learn from each other, you’re developing your sailing skills and it really does broaden you as a person.” Having completed bronze and silver-level Sailability qualifications, Hannah is close to achieving gold. Now aged 34, she is a Rooster-sponsored ambassador for the sport and now hopes to take part in a tall ship adventure with the Jubilee Sailing Trust. Sailing has also encouraged Hannah to try other sports and interests. She meets up with Sailability friends to go disability skiing and climbing, plays in an orchestra. She is applying for a place at Lancaster University to do a degree in English and creative writing. “Sailing really has opened up a world of opportunity,” says Hannah. “It made me realise there is a life out there to be had. Sailing has given me the confidence to try other things and make new friends. “The only people I saw before were family and carers – but

12

RYA DINGHY SHOW 2020

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I FELT FREE OF MY DISABILITY Hannah Shelmerdine carers come and go because it’s a job, whereas my sailing friends will stay with me whatever happens, providing continuity and stability, something perhaps that other people would take for granted. “You can feel very isolated when you’ve always got a carer with you because nobody ever comes over to talk to you. But with Sailability people do because they understand. And my carers like me sailing because they see I can progress in something.” Hannah says her family, along with her carers and friends at Bolton Sailing Club, have seen a big difference in her health and wellbeing since she first went out on the water with Sailability. “For me, sailing has been an absolute life-saver, particularly as I need a lot of support. It’s opened so many friendships and doors. One of my carers recently said to me: ‘We couldn’t get you out at one point, and now you’re never in!’”

Don’t miss Sarah, Sam and Hannah’s talk at 11am on the Great Hall Stage (Saturday and Sunday).

RECORD BREAKING DINGHY CRUISING For most dinghy sailors, a cruise might mean a short sail to a local bay or river on a sunny afternoon. For friends Will Hodshon and Rich Mitchell, a bigger cruising adventure beckoned, resulting in a record-breaking circumnavigation of mainland Britain, in a 16ft dinghy!

THE FREEZEDRIED MEALS WERE ACTUALLY REALLY TASTY AND WE WERE OFTEN SO COLD THAT THESE HOT MEALS WERE THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY 14

RYA DINGHY SHOW 2020

A

circumnavigation of Britain under sail takes most cruisers an entire summer. Friends Will Hodson and Rich Mitchell completed the trip in a little over 15 days – and they did it in a 16ftWayfarer dinghy. It was a remarkable achievement that beat all previous records for sailing around Britain in an open boat, and the pair also became the first to complete the challenge non-stop and unassisted. But it didn't come easy – they were drenched by rough seas for days, suffered hallucinations through exhaustion and came close to calling for help.

The perfect boat The two set sail from Salcombe, Devon, on 15 June 2019 and arrived back after sailing 1,390 nautical miles (2,237km) in the Hodshon family’s much-loved Wayfarer, bought new at the London Boat Show 60 years earlier by Will’s grandfather. Little could his grandfather have envisaged when he took his four children out racing in it – naming it Nipegegi after the first two letters from each of their names – that it would not only win national titles in the ’60s and ’70s, but would be refitted in the next millennium by one of his grandsons and go on to beat numerous sailing world records. Will, aged 42, grew up sailing Nipegegi and says: “If you have to sail round Britain non-stop and unassisted in a dinghy, the Wayfarer, and I would say particularly the earlier Wayfarer design, is almost perfect for it. They’re a famously good sea boat, not only beamy and stable but actually pretty quick too. Having a large sail area means they have the power to maintain good speed with large amounts of equipment on board. I think it’s one of the only dinghies you can lie flat on the floor too. “It’s no surprise that the two previous monohull dinghy records were set in Wayfarers. But we did also beat the multihull around Britain record!” The previous fastest records were set by Jeremy Warren and Phil Kirk’s Wayfarer, Hafren, with a time of 32 days in 2014, and Luke Yeates and Mark Angell in 2006, who set the multihull record in an 18ft catamaran in 28 days. Fittingly, given Nipegegi’s pedigree, Will and Rich’s attempt at the record was very

much a family supported affair, as parents and partners, aunts, uncles and cousins lent their time, expertise and money. Will’s uncle, Nick, was stationed with a reliable internet and phone-line connection at his home in Southampton, while his dad, Geoff, and aunty, Penny, followed the sailors around Britain in a modified campervan, kitted out not only with spares, tools, clothing, food and water in case of emergency, but also communications devices and laptops to monitor and relay weather updates. Using mobile and satellite communication, the three parties discussed tactics night and day throughout the attempt. Occasionally, Will and Rich would see Geoff and Penny waving from a headland. But with no support on the water, their months of meticulous preparation and sea trials would prove essential to their success.

Communication and provisions The navigation system was comprised of a hard-wired chart plotter, powered by battery and charged by a solar panel, which had been revised five times to ensure the whole system was totally waterproof. They also carried two iPads in waterproof cases with Navionics software for passage planning, plus handheld GPSs, smartphones and laminated large scale paper charts. Communications were likewise beltand-braces, with a mobile phone, handheld VHF radio, satellite phone and two Personnel Location Beacons on board. They also needed to find space for two watermakers, a jetboil stove and gimbal, four litres of emergency bottled water, and enough nutrition to provide each of them with 3,500 calories a day. A 1,000 calorie breakfast of porridge or granola at 6am was followed by snacks of nuts, protein bars and homemade brownies, then a rehydrated 1,000 calorie freeze-dried meal at 6pm thanks to sponsor Expedition Foods. “The freeze-dried meals were actually really tasty and we were often so cold that these hot meals were the highlight of the day,” says Will. “We provisioned for 30 days and that was also how much time we’d booked off work, so when we finished still with 15 days of food and time left, the joke was we could have gone around again!” The date for departure was close to the longest day of the year offering the most RYA DINGHY SHOW 2020

15

daylight hours for sailing, and coincided with spring tides to give them a good headstart around the first headland. Analysis of long range forecasts and various scenarios saw them choosing to start from Salcombe and making the controversial decision to tackle the circumnavigation anti-clockwise. Many people queried this break from the tradition of sailing the route clockwise, but Will said, “You either believe in the science or you don’t, and it really paid off for us. We calculated we would get to Scotland in a week, when the wind would change from south-westerly and then westerly to a northerly. So our main aim was to get to the top of Scotland just at the point when the northerly wind kicked in. As it turns out, after a week of sailing we were just 15 miles and four hours behind schedule when that happened.” They were making good progress. But while the boat and onboard kit was proving reliable, sleep was elusive and sailing nonstop took them to the edge of reason. They endured three occasions when winds were over 30 knots. One of the breeziest was the first night, but at this point they were still feeling fit, and with good boat speed they broke the Wayfarer 24-hour distance-speed record, sailing 132 miles, and ploughed on. The second time was near Edinburgh, but 60 miles offshore, they now hadn’t slept for three days because of the violent movement and the volume of water coming into the boat through rain and waves. Rich’s feet were swelling up, their hands were sore and they were freezing cold. Will was hearing voices and Rich was hallucinating. “We honestly didn’t know if we’d make it through the night, thinking we’d have to call for help, and lose the non-stop and 16

RYA DINGHY SHOW 2020

WE HONESTLY DIDN’T KNOW IF WE’D MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT, THINKING WE’D HAVE TO CALL FOR HELP unassisted record,” says Will. “The only thing we hadn’t prepared enough for was sleep deprivation, as we assumed when we got really tired we’d sleep; but in an extreme environment your body doesn’t let you because of the heightened stress. The boat didn’t break, but physically and mentally we were really close to it.” The pair took it in turns to sail 15-minute shifts over six to eight hours until the wind finally dropped and the sun came out. But for the rest of the trip they remained on the limit for managing sleep and cold. They shifted their focus from the ultimate challenge to small, achievable goals, winning one mini-race at a time to reach the next headland, tide or new patch of wind. Will says: “In the back of our minds we knew we were lucky with the wind. We knew it wasn’t going to get any better than this and that if we didn’t manage it this time, it was unlikely we’d make it another time. Luckily the boat didn’t miss a beat and the wind was generally on our side, otherwise I don’t know if we’d have made it.” Alongside the extreme discomfort, there were also many highlights. As the pair took in the beauty of the British coastline, seals, porpoises, dolphins and whales joined them. At times dolphins swam alongside Nipegegi

for 20 miles. Will and Rich could recognise “mum and dad tailgating us at the stern while the kids were playing up front in the bow wave”. But Rich, aged 44, says what really struck them was what wasn’t there. “Our grandfathers would have seen scores of whales. We saw maybe ten. How many will our children get to see? We truly need to look after the environment we have.” Both sailors are marine scientists and fundraising through ‘Nipegegi Round Britain’, supported by Pure Ionic Water and the Water Smart Foundation, is on course to raise more than £10,000 for Surfers Against Sewage and the RNLI. Will and Rich have been sailing together for nearly 20 years, both racing and undertaking shorter expeditions in Nipegegi. Although tackling an extreme challenge requires a lot of preparation and experience, Will says the British coastline offers all kinds of scope for dinghy cruising adventures, big or small. “The great thing about offshore cruising in a dinghy is that you can have an epic sailing experience for not a massive amount of money. You can monitor the forecast and then set off from the best location and you don’t even have to finish at the same place. With a bit of organisation you can sail with the wind for as long as you like and then take the boat out of the water at the end. There are so many ports and slipways along UK coastline, you can have an amazing sailing adventure of any scale, whether it’s for a few hours or a few days."

Hear more from Rich and Will on the Great Hall Stage at 12.30pm on Saturday and Sunday. Nipegegi will be on show in the Palm Court.

AIMING FOR THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS We caught up with Giles Scott, Olympic gold medallist, tactician, and platespinner extraordinaire, as he prepares for a pivotal year in his Olympic and America’s Cup campaigns

F

or a man juggling two full time jobs in sailing, at the cutting edge of two quite different worlds, Giles Scott is a remarkably relaxed guy. Not to mention self-effacing. Externally, there’s little that exposes the dominant sportsman that he is, and the ruthlessness of the sailor that he becomes once he leaves the shore. The patient timbre of his voice certainly belies the fact that he’s about to face the most challenging 14 months of his career so far, chasing two of the three most coveted prizes in sailing and world sport in quick succession. And yet he is. Scott, 32, will head to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games this summer in a bid to defend his Rio 2016 Finn crown , aiming to keep the title in British hands for the 20th year, the sixth Games in a row, and at the last Olympic outing for the class since its ousting from the Paris 2024 line-up. Alongside what he hopes will be a gold medal-winning campaign at what he expects to be his Olympic swansong in Tokyo, Scott is tactician and a key player in Sir Ben Ainslie’s bid to bring the America’s Cup – the world’s oldest sporting trophy – home to Britain for the first time with Ineos Team UK in the first quarter of 2021. It’s a masterclass in sporting juggling acts,

18

RYA DINGHY SHOW 2020

and while Scott jokes that any “holidays have gone out the window”, for the time being, he is also clear that his two worlds mesh together to the benefit of both campaigns. “It just becomes a bit of an exercise in time management, prioritising, getting some good support around me,” he explains, matter-of-factly. “My coach Matt [Howard] has had to take on some extra work on the dayto-day running of the Finn campaign. On the Ineos side, we’re doing what we can to knit the two programmes together. They are absolutely full time roles, but they do complement one another, and if it’s done carefully, they can work really well alongside one another. “Obviously there’s a bit of give and take here and there. Ben’s been there and done exactly what I’m trying to do – he absolutely understands what it takes and supports me.” As a now seasoned Olympic campaigner, Scott is also clear that he wanted this Games cycle to be different than the last. “I don’t think I’d have been capable of doing the same four years that I did for Rio towards Tokyo,” Scott admits. “I’ve matured into a different sailor. “Sailing’s so diverse, and we’re so

lucky with our sport that there are lots of other things that you can get your teeth into other than Olympic sport, and also alongside Olympic sport. A big part of it is widening my skillset and taking on bigger, more challenging roles outside the Olympic world.” To that end, Scott has taken on an expanded role in this 36th America’s Cup campaign, alongside his on-water role as tactician. “I’m certainly more engaged at a strategic level [this time],” he explains. “I’ve had a lot more involvement in the whole programme from the outset. I worked quite closely with Ben last time, but more with Ben and Grant [Simmer] in terms of the way the whole programme operates this time around. Fortunately it was a role I got offered, but had I not, I would have pushed for it! “It’s a fascinating role. It’s great to be that involved in the whole process, because last time, I was very much coming in, doing the sailing, providing feedback of course, but I was very much more in and out. Now, if I’m not Finn sailing I’m there with them all the time – ‘at work’ I suppose!” Clearly the difficulty that comes with all that is making sure that you’re still in

SELECTION IS STILL A SPECIAL MOMENT, IT WAS GREAT TO GET IT TICKED OFF AS SOON AS I COULD AT THE FIRST AVAILABLE SPOT a position to deliver the result that you want to within the Olympic world at the same time. While Scott, on paper, has not shown the same out and out dominance this cycle as he did towards Rio 2016 (winning 17 out of 19 world-ranked regattas; finishing second in the others), he’s maintained an enviable record of success in a smaller, more focused set of events, and insists he is where he needs to be in his timed run towards Tokyo. Along with the rest of the British Sailing Team, he’s spent valuable time training and racing in the Games waters off Enoshima, and feels ready for what the venue can throw at him. “When we first started going there a few years ago I wasn’t much of a fan, but I’ve learned to like it. It’s a cool place to go to. It takes a while to get your head into the way

that Tokyo and the Japanese tick, but it’s a cool place to hang out. “Sailing-wise, it can offer some really amazing conditions but on the flipside it can be really, really frustrating too. You don’t really know what you’re going to get. “We had a really frustrating couple of months training there before the 2019 Test Event, which wasn’t great. Our container took a little longer than expected to get through customs and the remainder of the events were really light, fickle winds and it was quite cold. We then went away for two weeks and came back and it was like someone had turned on the heaters! We were roasting hot, we were all melting, but there was good breeze. “It’s quite a tricky place to plan for an Olympic window. Historically we’ve always got around that by spending a lot of days there, which we’re still doing, but it just doesn’t feel like the weather’s quite played ball so far!” A podium finish at the Test Event secured Scott’s ticket to Tokyo, with his selection to Team GB, along with that of 13 other British Sailing Team talents, confirmed in October. “Selection is still a special moment, and from a performance perspective, it was great to get it ticked off as soon as I could at the first available spot. It’s never a foregone

conclusion, especially in the Finn class, so gaining selection is very much a part of the whole Olympic journey. “It’s nice to join Team GB again, and hopefully be able to have another good trip to the Olympic Games!” says Scott, in typically understated fashion. “Obviously [2020] is going to be a big year Finn-wise,” Scott continues, but he plans to still keep his hand in with the Cup world, racing the AC75 Britannia at the “can’t miss” America’s Cup World Series in Cagliari in April, and two further still-to-be-announced venues, ahead of a full switch to the AC team after Tokyo. And what of life beyond sailing? With such a balancing act with his twin campaigns, how does the Portsmouthbased sailor enjoy his downtime? Silence. “I don’t know. I used to do things like play golf, but I haven’t done that in so long. On days off I just end up fully chilling, doing not a lot. Sounds boring, doesn’t it? I’ve got to sort that out!” “I try to make time for my family and friends, but probably not enough. I certainly haven’t seen my nephews enough, that’s for sure.” While Scott’s social life may need some work, his future career ambitions less so. “In terms of sport and sailing, I’d love to remain involved in the America’s Cup and I’d love to get involved in more offshore racing. To do The Ocean Race, or whatever it might turn into, and have a shot at the ‘Triple Crown’ would be incredible – no one’s achieved that yet. Doing something like that would be amazing, or maybe even the Jules Verne. “If I were to be able to look back at my sailing career and felt that I’d operated at the top level in Olympic, Cup and then the ocean racing world then I’d be pretty happy with that. “It’d be a dream to be able to say you’d won all of them. We’ll see how we go! “At the moment, life stops in March 2021, and we’ll go from there!”

CROSSHAVEN

The ultimate high-performance sailing boot

PROTECTING OUR DINGHY PLAYGROUND The spotlight shines brighter than ever on the global climate crisis. But what can we, the boating community, really do to help?

O

lympic Champion Hannah Mills gave an impassioned speech at the UN Youth Climate Summit last year, imploring delegates to act in the fight against climate change – in particular, the issue of plastic pollution. She’s clear that big changes start with individual actions, and in late 2019 launched the Big Plastic Pledge, urging the sporting community and sports fans to channel their collective voice to effect a lasting reduction in single-use plastics in the sports industry: mass sporting events can generate up to 750,000 single-use plastic bottles and seven tonnes of waste. The Big Plastic Pledge asks its sports fans to commit to simple, tangible changes: reusable water bottles, coffee cups, lunch boxes and cutlery and refusing single-use plastic packaging and bags; encouraging your sports clubs and events to find alternatives to plastics; to name a few. And to share those changes to inspire others to do the same. Mills will be joined at the show by The Green Blue’s Campaign Manager, Kate Fortnam, and Bianca Carr of The Final Straw Solent. Initially, a volunteer group organising clean-ups of beaches and community spaces in the Emsworth area, The Final Straw Solent has expanded since its inception in 2018. The initiative works with local businesses to find ethical and sustainable alternatives to disposable plastic, and has devised a schools outreach programme, influencing thousands of children through workshops and assemblies to make informed and sustainable choices.

RYA reduces its impact on the environment at the Dinghy Show by...

. . .

Promoting public transport: the use of rail, underground or bus services to travel to Alexandra Palace is strongly encouraged. A shuttle bus is organised to the venue from Wood Green Station (Saturday only) in addition to existing bus routes serving the venue. As parking is limited, those planning on driving to the venue are encouraged to car share. Encouraging visitors to use refillable water bottles: stamp out single-use plastic bottles! Water refill stations are available by toilet facilities, and bottles can be filled at every food and beverage outlet at the venue. Reducing plastic: the RYA aims to use as little plastic as possible for its own activities throughout the show, and is urging all exhibitors to do the same.

The Green Blue is the joint environment programme between the RYA and British Marine, and celebrates its 15th birthday this year. In 2019, it won the coveted World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award for its commitment to sustainability initiatives within the recreational boating sector and the marine leisure industry with awareness-raising campaigns and best practice guidance. The programme’s future plans include the development of a national volunteer team, who will be fully trained to deliver the environmental programme’s outreach work through educational activities, talks, instructor training and events. Kate says: “It has been so encouraging to see our sailing community come together to take action and play their part in making

their own boating more sustainable. I’m looking forward to sharing the simple actions we can all take to protect our sailing environment.”

Don’t miss the Dinghy Sailing for Sustainability talk – Great Hall Stage, 2.15pm (Saturday and Sunday) – and find out how you and your club can play your part towards a sustainable future for our sport. For details: thegreenblue.org.uk, bigplasticpledge.com and finalstrawsolent.org
