hristmas shopping in London, if you time it well, is a feast for the senses, combining glamour with history. Visit Hatchards bookshop on Piccadilly, where Byron once perused the shelves, or Liberty, “the chosen resort for the artistic shopper” according to Oscar Wilde. In this festive issue, we offer gift ideas from the capital’s most famous names, from Harvey Nichols to Burlington Arcade. We learn the tricks of the trade from the capital’s Christmas Makers – professional florists and decorators, gift shoppers, wrappers and chefs. Plus there are recipes from the city’s finest pubs and restaurants – including Dishoom, Mildred’s, and The Cadogan Arms – for you to try at home. All this, plus London’s properties of the year. Wishing you a Happy Christmas!

The celebrated chocolatier talks to Rob McGibbon about her sweet life in the capital, creating new f lavours at Rococo and Prestat BOX OF DELIGHTS ROCOCO’S CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN, INSPIRED BY SANTA’S WORKSHOP; BELOW, CHANTAL AT PRESTAT

My working life has been devoted to chocolate for 40 years. It’s not always been easy, but I still love it because I never stop learning. Much of my time is spent dreaming up flavours that will bring people a moment of joy. And that’s no bad way to spend your days! This year, I’ve been creating new chocolates with Rococo, as well as for Prestat of Piccadilly. We’ve just released a special new truffle to mark Rococo’s 40th anniversary. It’s called the Cru Criollo and is made from 100 per cent criollo – the rarest cocoa in the world. This truffle is super special and made in very small quantities. It’s the equivalent of sipping a very fine vintage wine.

My first memory of London was living in Forest Hill and our family being known by our neighbours as “the Coadys who don’t wear shoes” because we ran around barefoot everywhere, a legacy of our travels. My creativity was set free when I went to art college in my late teens. I became a punk and studied at Central Saint Martins and Camberwell School of Art. My studies helped with my packaging designs, which became so popular when I launched Rococo in 1983.

A Saturday job in the chocolate hall of Harrods changed my life. It was a revelation to be surrounded by the best chocolates in the world. I also saw a bad attitude towards customer service. It inspired me to create a fantasy emporium of chocolate that prioritised the customer experience. I recently moved to Tooting after 50 years in Bonnington Square in Vauxhall. My husband James and I loved our big house, but our two children have left home now, so we decided to downsize and free ourselves up. Six lorry loads of stuff went into storage, which is wonderfully liberating. Coming to Tooting has been like moving to the country. The diverse villages of London are a constant wonder. My

favourite places are edgy ones, like Brixton or Spitalfields. I like wandering down hidden back streets and getting lost. My spirits are lifted by art, old architecture, little pubs and smaller specialist shops run by passionate artisans, like my friend Rachel Vosper, who makes and sells her gorgeous candles on Kinnerton Street in Belgravia.

Christmas is an important time for chocolate and for sharing the pleasures it brings. Rococo is known for its quirky designs, so this year we have a collection of chocolates inspired by Santa’s Workshop. Prestat was founded in 1902 and has a royal warrant, so its products are more genteel and traditional. Its truffles are as delicious as they are legendary. My enduring passion is to help the chocolate business evolve positively in every aspect. I want it to be a standard bearer for sustainability of ethical practices that respect the cocoa farmers. I also want consumers to appreciate the intricacies of quality chocolate. It’s worth understanding what you’re eating. You really do get what you pay for! L prestat.com; rococochocolates.com

he story behind that sapphire necklace or gold ring is a symbol of giving that contributes to the fabric of a family and can signify the beginnings of a new one. Every heirloom started their journey as a new creation. With the evolution of design and meaning, jewellery designers are offering myriad options for future heirlooms. Whether wishing to redesign an old family jewel, design a wholly bespoke piece or simply fi nd something new, this Christmas is the start of a new chapter. At Burlington Arcade-based Lily Gabriella (lilygabriella.com), designs are inspired by the wonders of architecture. The collector’s edition illustrates the versatility of shape, using materials such as titanium, pink sapphire, and aquamarine, which can be tailored to any colourway. Lily cites clients being drawn to the Talisman collection, which can be customised. Known for protective amulets, Lily has seen mothers and daughters choose amulets to match during appointments. And when it comes to her bespoke creations, Lily gifts clients a hand-drawn sketch of the design to keep, a nod to her fi ne-art training. Ananya Malhotra, founder of the eponymous

Ananya (ananya.com) similarly has a symbolistic approach. For those new to the world of crystals, who can’t yet differentiate citrine from yellow aventurine, her advice? Listen to your intuition. “We tend to see primary colours gain popularity around this time, for example, gemstones such as ruby, malachite and lapis lazuli,” she says. “Our diamond baguette chakra tennis bracelets work well for clients looking for a more classic piece. Every gemstone has its own qualities and can fit what someone seeks to achieve for the new year.” At Seven Kings Studio’s, double studs are often commissioned with the birthstones of mother and baby, notes founder Sarah O’Grady (sevenkingsstudio.com), who also receives requests for dates, names, and messages to be engraved. Despite varying inspirations for designers, how jewellery is worn by people has become more individualised. Specialising in unusual stones, Kiki McDonough (kiki.co.uk) has noticed the growing popularity of pink opals. “We see daughters who have been given Kiki pieces by their mothers and are building their own collection around that,” explains Kiki, whose new range, Special Editions, features detachable earrings. “You

Future heirloo ms

JOHN CALLEIJA, CALLEIJA Which Calleija pieces would you cite as ‘future heirlooms’? Argyle Pink Diamonds™ definitely fit the heirloom category; they have become even more coveted since the closure of the worldfamous Argyle Mine in 2020. Over the years we’ve seen these rare and highly collectable diamonds gifted for milestone birthdays and anniversaries, with the intention that they will be passed down for generations to come. Of course, engagement rings are traditionally considered heirlooms, being passed from parent to child. With the Calleija Engagement Collection, the extra special touch of featuring a hidden Australian Argyle Pink Diamond™ under the setting adds to the uniqueness of the ring. How do you advise clients on bespoke creations? Creating bespoke jewellery is an organic process that differs for each individual. Sometimes, clients bring in heirloom pieces with sentimental value, like their great-grandmother’s engagement ring, and request it to be redesigned into something else, such as a pendant. The key to success in advising clients on these unique creations is fostering a sense of trust and collaboration. By involving clients at every stage of the design process and providing them with the knowledge and support they need, we can bring their vision to life. This approach results in a one-of-a-kind piece that's deeply meaningful and reflective of their individual style and story. It’s a privilege to be a part of this creative journey and to see the joy that these personalised pieces bring.

IDEAL SETTING Clockwise from top: Diamond-set chunky

charm pendants, from £4,700, Rachel Boston; crystal motif and palladium cufflinks, £195, Lalique; gold ring set with a tourmaline, aquamarines and diamonds, £10,000 Minka Jewels

What has been your most interesting commission? It would have to be Argyle Boheme™, a one-carat red diamond from the final Argyle Pink Diamonds Signature Tender™. It's one of the rarest, most coveted diamonds in the world. The owner entrusted us to design and craft a beautiful jewellery creation that would be celebrated for generations to come. Have you noticed any client buying trends? In the realm of luxury jewellery, there has been a discernible shift in consumer behaviour. More clients are looking for ways to make their jewellery more unique and meaningful, which has led to increasing demand for bespoke pieces at Calleija. This surge in interest in custom-designed jewellery is, in our view, a reaction to the market's oversaturation with generic, mass-produced designs that fail to resonate with individuals or embrace originality. Another trend we’ve noticed is couples choosing to be actively involved in the design and selection of engagement rings together. This collaborative approach allows them to create a piece that not only symbolises their commitment, but also reflects their own tastes and preferences. Additionally, we’ve seen mothers and daughters showing a growing interest in buying matching jewellery pieces. This trend underscores the desire for meaningful connections and the value of shared experiences. Matching jewellery is a symbol of the bond between generations and can be cherished and passed on as heirlooms. can buy the hoops and one pair of drops then get another pair of drops the following year.” Being open to a variety of metals and stones creates a collection that can stand the test of time, Robert ‘Bobby’ Leigh-Pemberton, dealer at Humphrey Butler (humphreybutler.com) advises. Treat it as an ‘emotional investment’ and buy what you like. Designs from the Victorian era using amethysts, topaz and garnets can be overlooked, with demantoid garnets rarer and at times more valuable than diamonds. “Some who buy jewellery as a gift, fail to understand that jewels, particularly important antique pieces that are likely to become future ‘heirlooms’, often have a personal value beyond just being, for instance, a pair of earrings,” he says. With festive cheer all around, Christmas is a popular time to propose. The modern engagement ring, designed by Tiff any founder Charles Tiff any, has become a blueprint. While some may prefer an element of surprise, jewellery consultant and stylist Beanie Major, founder of In Detail (indtl.com) has noticed more couples buying together. London-based designer Rachel Boston (rachelboston.co.uk),

“TIMING IS EVERYTHING. IT CAN TAKE THREE TO FOUR WEEKS TO PRODUCE A RING, FOR EXAMPLE, SO LAST-MINUTE SHOPPING ISN’T AN OPTION” encourages couples to design the ring together. A common request is ‘classic with a twist’. “If the person the ring is for has direct input in its creation, you’ll usually end up with a bolder, more original piece without having risked it not being to their taste.” However, Rachel suggests some detective work if still planning a surprise, via noting favoured colours and shapes. She also says that those with an active lifestyle may benefit from a rub-over setting, rather than a dainty claw setting. Lucy Crowther, founder of Minka Jewels (minkajewels.com) adds that rub-over settings protect gems from all angles. When designing bespoke, above all the most important factor is time. “Timing is everything. It can take three to four weeks to produce a ring for example, so last-minute shopping isn’t an option,” advises Susannah Lovis (susannahlovis.com), managing director of the London jeweller. Able to help with even the most complex requests, half their work is bespoke. With a collection of almost 2,500 pieces, most customers purchase with the intention of passing on. “The bond between the recipient and the wearer lasts a lifetime when ordering bespoke gifts,” says Sadhbh Roux-Fouillet, creative

director of Anoona Jewels (anoonajewels.com). Key life moments have been experienced by the fi rst generation in their bespoke cuffl inks, and are able to be passed down to men and women. Reflecting upon time, the fi ne art of horology as an heirloom can also honour past traditions. Bucherer this year unveiled the Heritage Chronometer, a collection of 17 styles of limited-edition retro-revival timepieces, evoking the spirit of the 1960s. At Patek Philippe (patek. com), the Calatrava model is a display of artisanal refi nement, with dual time zone. Also continuing to fuse heritage with the future is Fabergé, famed for its exemplary craftsmanship. “‘A life in colour’ is our motto, and therefore, colour and coloured gemstones are the central components of Fabergé, then (pre-1917) and now,” explains Josina von dem Bussche-Kessell, creative director at Fabergé ( faberge.com) who continues to see the desire for bespoke and personalised jewellery. “Whether you’re honouring a decade-long family tradition or starting one yourself, heirlooms are symbolic of the legacy our lineages leave behind, and a watch is something to treasure across a multitude of lifetimes.” L

Designed to excite and inspire future apartment owners, the Showsuite offers just a taste of what you can expect from its vast array of on-site amenities, from the library bar to the restaurant, private cinema, event space and luxurious pool and spa. This is evident through the carefully-curated collection of vintage artefacts, extensive library and bespoke artwork on show, along with the amenity and communal spaces. For the interiors, Wallacea Living’s creative director, Sue Timney, who is Chair of the Chelsea Arts Club, professor and fellow of The Royal College of Art and a past president and visiting professor of the British Institute of Interior Design, worked with world renowned architecture and design practice Jestico + Whiles. James Dilley, director at Jestico & Whiles also commented, “We’re creating new homes that go beyond the desire for enhanced lifestyle and wellness by focusing on the spirit of belonging, pride, connectivity, spontaneity and joie de vivre.” The interests and cultural references of Wallacea Living’s customer base are also the inspiration behind many of the events and activities on offer. Whether it’s attending a pottery class hosted by a local artist, a tai chi class with the on-site personal trainer, inviting your friends to a screening of It’s a Wonderful Life in the private cinema, enjoying a festive taster menu in the restaurant, relaxing in the spa, or introducing your grandchildren to rock ’n’ roll at the Christmas party, Wallacea Living Marylebone offers a unique lifestyle choice where you can make the most of your later years. Happily, experts such as Sasha Baldwin, the founder of KUDO, a luxury lifestyle concierge (kudolifestyle.com), are on hand to help. “We start preparing from September, securing the Christmasfood delivery slots, getting tickets to the best festive shows, coming up with the gift of the season and booking winter sun trips or a last-minute ski holiday,” Baldwin says. This year, his Cherubim door wreath, inspired by the Netflix period drama series Queen Charlotte, has been especially popular. Strain and his team will also come to a client’s home to deck the halls, quite literally. “I strive to achieve a harmonious and balanced blend between the floral décor and the overall ambience of the home,” Strain explains. He uses seasonal, scented foliage such as branches of birch, spruce and scotch pine and adds texture and bold colour with ilex berries, amaryllis, cymbidium orchids and large-headed roses. What do you get the person who have everything? Ask Hetty Lintell. As well as being luxury editor at Country Life magazine, she runs The Gift Consultancy, a private, discreet service that sources and designs bespoke presents for Londoners. Her clients include businesses, football clubs and private offices, as well as ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs), celebrities and time-poor City types looking for inspiration. “My aim is not only to save clients time – and often money – but to make the gift giver look better!” Lintell says. Lintell can work to any timeline and there’s no end to how bespoke and inventive she can go with presents. She has made a pair of skis into a coffee table; had a pair of smoking slippers embroidered with a favourite wrist watch for a watch fanatic; and commissioned a bespoke wooden and leather Monopoly board with property names from a family’s past, with solid gold counters modelled on the client’s dog, car and boat. “This year, I’m seeing less alcohol – instead of wine, I’m doing magnums of olive oil in beautiful wooden boxes with messages or names engraved,” Lintell says. There’s also a huge interest in jewellery boxes, cashmere, fine jewellery and watches. “Wellness, sleep and relaxation gifts are popular as well, which is often ideal timing for Christmas burn out.” thegiftconsultancy.co.uk

I’ve even done it in mid-January,” Hannon explains. She can also provide a delivery service where she preps everything in advance so it can be delivered oven ready. “Christmas is a time where my clients really want to indulge, with no expense spared,” she says. “It’s about providing the most personal and discreet service possible and impeccable time keeping, while serving the most delicious and memorable meal of the year.” catrosecooks.com

The company begins by designing and styling a bespoke wrapping scheme in a client’s chosen colour palette. It’ll then collect the gifts, carefully wrap them and return them to the customer or their recipients directly. “Matt, uncoated papers are more elegant than shiny, glittery or heavily foiled papers and are widely recyclable,” Cole says. “We’re noticing that more clients are choosing to include details of how the wrapping materials were sourced and how best to reuse or recycle them, to educate the recipient.” colford.co.uk

All that delicious food needs the perfect accompaniment, but if you don’t know your chardonnay from your cabernet sauvignon, Hedonism Wines, the fine wine, whisky and spirits boutique in the heart of Mayfair, can help. Its experts will fill the wine cellars of homeowners in London and across the world according to customers’ personal tastes, needs and budget. If money’s no object, the company sells a range of exclusive names, including back vintages of Chevalier-Montrachet Domaine d’Auvenay – a 75cl bottle of the 2007 vintage costs £47,200 – and Yquem 1847, which comes in at £96,400 a bottle. In terms of spirits, Mavrommati says every festive meal should have a digestif such as a cognac, Armagnac or grappa. “For the more adventurous palates, gins served neat, like the elegant yet complex Seventy One gin or the savoury Cambridge Distillery Truffle gin, are great options to finish a meal.” hedonism.co.uk L

FESTIVE FOOD & DRINK

VIN BRULÉ SERVES 4

Recipe by Jacob Kenedy at Gelupo (pictured on previous page) "Vin Brulé is Italian mulled wine. All the wine-drinking nations have ways of spiking wine – vermouths for summer, and hot, spiced wine for winter. Italy’s wealth of citrus, and affinity for sweet spices that were traded through the Veneto, make for a particularly light and aromatic mulled wine."

MAKES 16–20

Recipe taken from Dishoom by Shamil Thakrar, Kavi Thakrar and Naved Nasir Published by Bloomsbury (£25) Paris Bakery serves an excellent version of these little cheese-and-pastry twirls. They are just right for dipping into hot masala chai, and an easy snack to make: you only need ready-made puff pastry and a handful of store-cupboard ingredients. The cinnamon sugar sticks are a lovely sweet variation (see below). You probably already have the ingredients to hand, so we recommend you make both, to satisfy both sweet and savoury tastes. INGREDIENTS: 1 sheet of ready-made puff pastry (320g), about 35x23cm Flour, for dusting 1 egg white, beaten FOR THE TOPPING 1¼–1½ tsp chaat masala 40g mature Cheddar, finely grated 4tsp chopped coriander leaves METHOD: • Take the pastry out of the fridge, remove any packaging and leave it out for around 20 minutes, allowing it to reach room temperature before using. • Heat the oven to 210°C/Fan 190°C/Gas 6–7 and line a baking tray with baking parchment. • Unroll the pastry and cut in half horizontally (to create two short rectangles

48 The London Magazine

rather than two long strips). Take one piece of pastry and lay it flat. Slice into long strips, 1.5–2cm wide, leaving them where they are (a floured pizza slicer is best for this). You should be able to cut 8–10 strips. • Brush the pastry with egg white, then dust lightly with chaat masala and sprinkle over the cheese and chopped coriander (you might find it easiest to microplane the cheese directly onto the pastry). Lightly run a rolling pin over the surface to secure the cheese and coriander, then dust with a little more chaat masala for luck. • Trying not to dislodge the topping, lift a pastry strip by both ends, twist it around to create nice twirls in the pastry, then lay it on the lined baking sheet and give it a light press to make it stay in place. Repeat with the rest of the strips, then with the other half of the pastry sheet. • Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, golden and quite crisp. Place on a wire rack to cool. Serve the pastry twists once they have cooled, with plenty of chai. Cinnamon sugar sticks variation • For the topping, mix 4 tsp white granulated sugar with 1 tsp ground cinnamon. Roll out the pastry and cut into strips as above. Sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar (there’s no need to press it in with a rolling pin), then twist and bake as above.

METHOD: • Put all the ingredients in a heavy saucepan over a medium-low heat and warm, covered, until steaming. Keep warm, covered, over the lowest flame for at least 10 minutes more, or up to 2 hours. • Once flavourful, ladle the steaming hot vin brulé into mugs or heatproof glasses.

THE CHRISTMAS STUFFING SCOTCH EGG MAKES 4

Recipe by James Knappett, culinary director at The Cadogan Arms, Chelsea One of the highlights of this Chelsea pub's Christmas menu. The humble Scotch egg gets a seasonal makeover with the addition of dried apricot. INGREDIENTS 300g good quality sausage meat (we use HG Walter, but any supermarket will have good quality sausages you can remove from the skins) 1 onion, finely diced 1 garlic clove, grated A pinch of sea salt Couple of twists of black pepper, depending on your preference 50g dried apricot, finely chopped 50g Paxo stuffing mix 4 good quality eggs (we use St Ewes rich egg yolk) 2 more egg yolks, beaten (save the whites to make an omelette or a whisky sour)

80g flour 200g panko breadcrumbs 3 litres rapeseed oil NB: All of the flour and breadcrumbs can be substituted for gluten free, if desired METHOD • Sweat onions and garlic in a small amount of the rapeseed oil, add salt and pepper. Allow the mixture to cool, then mix well with the sausage meat, diced apricots and stuffing powder. • Bring a medium pan of water to the boil add 4 eggs cook for 6½ mins. Remove the eggs from the boiling water and place in a bowl of ice water. Once cold peel off the shell (I peel them submerged in water as this helps loosen the shell). Drain the peeled eggs and dry on a kitchen cloth, then roll in a small amount of flour. • Press out your scotch egg mix to create

a thin layer and round shape, wrap this around the egg being careful not to break it, and smoothing out any creases or holes (I use a small amount of water on my finger to help with this). Next, roll the wrapped eggs in a small amount of flour and mix a tablespoon of water in to the egg yolk to loosen. Roll them in egg yolk and water mix and then roll in the panko breadcrumbs before storing in the fridge until ready to cook. • Preheat cooking oil, I recommend using rapeseed oil to 170°C. It’s best to use a fryer if you have one, if not use a large pan and slotted spoon. Cook your Scotch egg for 5 minutes in this oil, drain on a kitchen cloth. Leave to rest at room temperature for 5 minutes as this finishes off the cooking. Finally, cut in half, season with salt and black pepper and enjoy with cranberry sauce.

WINTER GREEN WALNUT SPANAKOPITA SERVES 4-8

Recipe by Sarah Wasserman, food and creative director at Mildred's vegan restaurant

"A wonderfully simple way to celebrate winter greens. Greece's most famous filo pie, spanakopita, with crunchy golden filo on top and a deep green filling makes a surprisingly simple seasonal statement. To keep things simple you can even make the filling in advance." INGREDIENTS FOR FILLING: 1 x 220g jar sun-blushed tomatoes, sliced – 165g drained weight (keep the oil for brushing the pastry) 2 medium brown onions, very finely sliced 400g winter greens like kale or cavalo nero – stems removed and washed well. If using chard, there's no need to remove stems. 5 garlic cloves, finely chopped or grated 35g dill, chopped 150g long-grain rice cooked – wild, white or wholegrain 75g walnuts, toasted and chopped 75g vegan feta, crumbled (or any vegan cheese of your choice) Pinch ground cinnamon or nutmeg Salt and pepper to taste

50 The London Magazine

INGREDIENTS FOR PIE: 10 sheets filo pastry (270g) Oil from the jarred tomatoes METHOD: • If using kale or cavalo nero, pull the leaves off the hard stems and wash well and drain. If using chard, trim off just the very base of the stems and slice into 8mm – 1cm slices. • Grease a square oven-proof dish or oven tray with some of the sun-blushed tomato oil. • Preheat oven to 180°C. • Bring a non-stick frying pan to a medium heat and add the finely sliced onions.Cook the onions until they’ve softened a little, then add the garlic and greens. Cook until the onions are soft and slightly caramelised. • When it’s cool enough to handle, squeeze the greens and onion mix to release the excess liquid. • Combine the greens mix with the walnuts, chopped sun-blushed tomatoes, dill and cooked rice, cinnamon or nutmeg and season to taste. • Using the oil from the tomatoes, brush a

layer of filo and press into the tray. Repeat covering the other side of the dish. Repeat until you have just one sheet left, making sure you brush each layer well with the oil. • Put the mix in the tray and then fold over the edges of the filo. Brush the last sheet with oil and fold to fit the top of the tray. Top the dish with the filo completely. Brush the top, then using a sharp knife, cut the filo down the middle and then on the other side to form a cross. Then from corner to corner, both ways (like a Union Jack flag pattern) • Put the spanakopita in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, until the pastry is golden and crunchy.

SMOKED SALMON CHRISTMAS SHARING BOARD SERVES 4-6

Recipe by Holly Congdon, managing director at Lettice Events, luxury sustainable caterer in London and the South East

PHOTOGRAPHS: MILDRED''S; LETTICE EVENTS

"This is a great interactive sharing board to have for canapés, or as a starter." INGREDIENTS 1 side smoked salmon, unsliced 250g extra thick crème fraiche Bunch of dill 2 lemons 3 medium beetroots 1 stick of horseradish 1 small focaccia or baguette A drizzle of extra-virgin rapeseed oil 200ml white wine vinegar 125g caster sugar 100ml water Salt Pepper in a grinder mandolin/grater METHOD • Begin by taking your salmon out of the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving.

This allows the oils to soften slightly and bring the flavour out. • Set your oven to 170°C to preheat. • Peel the beetroots in preparation for pickling. I’d advise using rubber gloves, otherwise you'll have red hands for days. • Thinly slice on a mandolin and then cut into very thin strips (Julienne). Alternatively, you can grate the beetroot. • Heat your vinegar, sugar, and water in a pan to boiling, then pour over your beetroot. Leave out of the fridge to cool. This will be ready in 30 minutes and will last for months, if kept in the fridge in a sealed container or jar. Crostinis: • Cut your baguette or focaccia into little bitesize crostini and place on a baking tray. Drizzle lightly with your rapeseed oil and sprinkle lightly with salt.

• Bake at 170°C for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Garnish: • Cut 1 of your lemons into wedges or cheeks, removing the seeds and place in a bowl ready to use. Season your crème fraiche with the zest of 1 lemon, a sprinkle of salt and a few twists of pepper. Place in a bowl and garnish with a few sprigs of dill. • Place your dill in a presentable glass with a small amount of water at the bottom for people to pick themselves. • Peel your horseradish and present with a micro plane or fine grater for people to grate themselves. It’s important to grate just before eating to get the spicy kick. • Then carve your salmon as desired. I’d recommend thinly sliced, so you can drape it on the crostinis. Voila!

FESTIVE SPICED CHOCOLATE CREMEUX SERVES 10

Recipe by Talia Prince, head chef at EVE Restaurant Kensington

MINCE PIE ESPRESSO MARTINI

"This super-simple recipe is essentially a very rich, solid, chocolate custard. The creamy, spicy, salty chocolate really hits the spot for a craving! You can substitute whichever spices you'd like, and the rosewater can be omitted or replaced with a drop of any flavouring extract (orange, hazelnut, coffee etc) or a dash of whisky or rum. The smoked chipotle gives it a delicious smoky raisin flavour too. ”In the restaurant at EVE, we set it into a deep container and rocher (fancy name for a scoop done with a spoon) to serve. You could use an ice cream scoop to make small balls – its very rich – or just set portions into small coupe glasses to serve in. Add a few flakes of Maldon salt on one side and a dollop of crème fraiche on the other, and enjoy!"

MAKES 1

"Nothing says Christmas quite like a mince pie. We love making our own here at Lettice, but we always have leftover mix. You can, of course, freeze this and use it next year. However, we love to flavour vodka with it to make a great seasonal Espresso Martini, which should help get you and your dinner guests out of the Christmas Day food coma." Holly Congdon, managing director at Lettice Events INGREDIENTS: 50ml mince pie vodka* 50ml cold espresso (or strong instant coffee) 50ml coffee liqueur METHOD: • Put all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and dry shake (no ice). • Once combined, add plenty of ice and shake until frothy. • Serve into a martini glass, through a strainer, then fine sieve to get that beautiful foam. • To add a seasonal flourish, serve with star anise, cinnamon sticks, or try grating fresh nutmeg over the top. Delicious! *To make the mince pie vodka: 250g mince-pie mix (mincemeat) 500ml vodka • Simply put the mix into an airtight container and cover with the vodka – shake to start the infusion. Infuse for a week, you can use the boozy mix as a dessert, or try it with cold custard. Just be careful, as it’s potent!

In September, five students from the 2022 Bridge programme joined Godolphin & Latymer in year seven, and during the summer break we were also pleased to launch Bridge Seniors for year 10 students.” In its entry, the girls’ day school detailed its PSHE programme, which seeks to ensure that students are “in-tune with the issues that matter to Londoners and that they have empathy and understanding for the challenges faced by our wider community”. Recent projects have supported LGBT+ History Month; Pride Month; COP27; Hammersmith & Fulham Foodbank; Refugee Rights Project; and Black History Month. BOND STREET

A

trip down Bond Street and New Bond Street is a roll-call of the fi nest jewellers and watchmakers in the world: Cartier, Fabergé, Bulgari, Boodles, Graff, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Tiff any… But like a beautiful diamond, the street has benefited from a reset and polish in recent years. The construction of the Elizabeth Line on Bond Street has provided the catalyst for the delivery of placemaking upgrades. New development around Hanover Square has transformed the once rather forlorn square into a vibrant new hub in the heart of the West End. Further improvements include the widening of pavements and decluttering of Bond Street itself to cope with the extra Elizabeth Line footfall. Burberry has reopened, Claridges has benefited from a new five-storey extension and Watches of Switzerland plans to open a 7,200 sq ft flagship on Old Bond Street next year.

“Old Bond Street and New Bond Street lie in one of Mayfair’s oldest quarters, with Hanover Square being created in 1717 on land owned by the Earl of Scarborough,” says Peter Wetherell of Wetherell estate agents. “The area offer an amazing shopping experience.” Wetherell is currently selling a flat opposite Claridges on Davies Street, another on Maddox Street, a new development in the Art Quarter at Cork Street and a three-bedroom triplex penthouse stunner on Old Bond Street, opposite The Ritz. Pieds-à-terre go to cosmopolitan buyers who love the area's cachet. “Bond Street has an enduring appeal with world-class fashion boutiques, global businesses, discreet residences and exceptional cuisine,” says Alastair Nicholson, head of sales in Knight Frank’s Mayfair office. “The opening of the Elizabeth Line and the extensive works around Hanover Square have added to the area’s exclusivity.”

For many, Bond Street is not only one of the world’s most famous luxury retail destinations, but also Mayfair’s principal road. A village in the city, with its own districts, parks and places, Mayfair is an exceptional place to live: Shepherd Market is a favourite of mine as it's where Mayfair began and offers charm on a more compact scale. However, the grandeur and green space of Grosvenor and Berkeley Squares never fail to charm. The intimacy of Mayfair offers those fortunate enough to call it home an exceptional quality of life – with the most amazing array of world cuisine and leading art institutions, Mayfair is a real community. Exceptionally well connected in all corners, the Elizabeth Line has further increased this, with Heathrow now just 35 minutes from Bond Street station and Canary Wharf just over 22 minutes away. beauchamp.co.uk

One Kensington Gardens, sold for close to its £23m guide price by Harrods Estates The pull of being able to peer into Kensington Gardens and over Kensington Palace was too much for one overseas buyer to resist, so they snapped up one of the five huge lateral residences in this David Chipperfield-designed development on Kensington Road. “We’ve experienced an increase in overseas buyers this year, testament to the enduring appeal of One Kensington Gardens and our brand,” comments Reem Dougramaji from Harrods Estates’ Middle Eastern Desk.

Lennox Gardens, sold for £16.75m by Rokstone/ UK Sotheby’s International Realty This triplex apartment within a Victorian grade II-listed, red-brick townhouse sits on “one of the most exclusive squares in Knightsbridge, with beautiful communal gardens,” says Rokstone founder Becki Fatemi. “It’s rare to have the front-to-back volume and ceiling-heights that this home has and the quality of work on the interiors was spectacular,” adds Fatemi of this lavishly renovated house whose design gems include a hidden seating area, with fireplace, beneath an L-shaped staircase in the voluminous reception hall.

63 Warwick Square, Pimlico, sold for its guide price £2.5m, Jackson-Stops Properties within the listed buildings on this Pimlico garden square are always sought after, and the sale of this four-bedroom flat, set on the top two, light-filled floors was the perfect example of “how a transaction can run like clockwork to the benefit of everyone involved”, says Harry Buchanan, director of Jackson-Stops Pimlico. The deal was done and dusted in six weeks from offer to exchange. “Importantly, the property was pitched at exactly the right price, generating a rush of interest,” says Buchanan. “It was a particularly stellar sale, as it was seamless.”

Radlett House, guided at £47.5m, through Knight Frank The sale of Radlett House – “a true country house in central London”, says Knight Frank – to a British buyer set a new price record for St John’s Wood in 2023. Tucked away on its own private road with direct access to Primrose Hill, the location is a privacy-seeking UHNW buyer’s dream. But the existing house – which is already palatial in its proportions - comes with value-adding opportunity, too, as it has life-long consent to be extended by 28,000 sq ft, including underground parking and a car lift.

Cromwell Grove, Shepherd’s Bush, guide price £2.9m , Finlay Brewer It’s the tick-box, turnkey home that house-hunting families in W6 fight over – so this sale of the year was a quick one for Finlay Brewer. This Victorian terraced tardis opens up into 2,750 sq ft of cool, contemporary interiors, including a modern kitchen extension with Crittall doors, four luxurious bathrooms straight out of a five-star boutique hotel and five big bedrooms (including a main suite that takes up the whole of one floor). Westfield is just down the road too, meaning an extra tick from any teenagers in the house.

Launceston Place, Kensington, sold for £6.25m by John D Wood & Co. There’s a country cottage-like charm to this semi-detached, Grade II-listed villa in one of W8’s most bucolic streets near Kensington Gardens. It’s one of the few houses to have off-street parking too. “The sale of this home was truly special, as it embodied the dream of every passer-by on this enchanting, iconic road with a timeless beauty,” comments Matthew Harrop, director at John D Wood & Co. “It achieved a brilliant result for our client, sold at the asking price, and reminded us that Launceston Place is one of the prettiest streets in London.”

WHERE THE STARS ALIGN

St John’s Wood Park, St John’s Wood, sold by Aston Chase, Savills and Knight Frank, with a guide price of £27.5m Who knows whether the Chinese buyers of this white stucco mansion are fans of Rihanna’s oeuvre, but the pop connection (the singer once rented it for two years) doubtless plays a part in setting a record sales price for the star-studded area. If its new owners find their fully-refurbished, double-fronted house’s existing 6,332 sq ft aren’t enough, there’s planning consent to extend the house to 16,000 sq ft to include a spa and pool. “This sale is indicative of the surge in demand from Chinese buyers for super-prime homes in London,” comments Aston Chase’s co-founding director, Mark Pollack. Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, sold for £16m by Wetherell Another record-breaker here, as this 4,100 sq ft, five-bed Grosvenor Square apartment that belonged to ‘Bentley Boy’ racing driver Bernard Rubin in the 1920s achieved the year’s highest price per sq ft (£3,900) for an unmodernised flat in Mayfair, and it was one of the biggest property deals for a London apartment in 2023. Its British buyer beat several rival bidders – including other residents in the same building – and is turning it into their London family home. “With its ‘Bentley Boy’ history, high ceilings and Connaught views, this trophy property is one of the finest lateral apartments in Mayfair,” comments Peter Wetherell of Wetherell estate agency. Eglon House, Primrose Hill, sold for £17.5m by Beauchamp Estates Originally recording studios used by Paul McCartney, David Bowie and Oasis, the five-bedroom Eglon House – which was converted into a live-work property in 2016 – was rented by award-winning American film producer Tim Burton while he was making Dumbo a few years ago. Now it’s the home and business base of a British media owner, who can impress guests with a swimming pool that doubles as a cinema, a gym with a cocktail bar and a doubleheight salon modelled on Eltham Palace. Its recent sale marks one of the highest prices ever achieved in Primrose Hill. 38 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, sold in excess of £10m by Strutt & Parker This trophy home – complete with an artist’s cottage in the garden – was designed by Arts & Crafts leading light Charles Robert Ashbee in the 1890s, has a legendary Chelsea address (George Best, David Lloyd George and most of the Rolling Stones are among the street’s many starry residents, past and present) and views over the Thames and Albert Bridge. The Grade II-listed house first came to market in late 2022 and following a bidding war sold to a European buyer in October this year. “The last few months have seen a resurgence in activity in Chelsea, with around 90 per cent of houses above £5m selling as a result of multiple bids,” says Agne Karuzaite from Strutt & Parker Chelsea.

ON THE MARKET… GORGEOUS GEORGIAN Savills – Walpole House, Chiswick, £16.25m You’ll be wowed by this Grade I-listed house before you set foot inside, given its dream location on Chiswick Mall with a private lawn that touches the Thames. There’s a half-acre listed walled rear garden where past owners – including King Charles II’s mistress, Barbara Villiers, and the Hon. Thomas Walpole, nephew of prime minster Sir Robert – once ambled. Vanity Fair author William Makepeace Thackeray boarded here when the house was a school. The seven-bed house is one of the capital’s finest Georgian residences. TURNKEY TROPHY Hamptons – Hale House, Kensington, £21.75m Behind the classic stucco-fronted Kensington facade is this vast modern duplex on De Vere Gardens – originally two apartments merged into one 5,600 sq ft, six-bed property, numerous high-ceilinged reception spaces and a cool turnkey design that’s crying out to be admired by party guests. “One of my favourite features is the New York loft-style staircase with exposed brickwork and marble floating stairs, a feature in its own right,” comments Grant Bates, head of Hamptons’ private office in London. Or stand on the balcony and gaze across Hyde Park. L

hristmas is coming – and you have two options. You can indulge in misanthropic moaning about the crowds and the excess of decorations. Or, like me, you can succumb to the glamour of the season, marvelling at the way in which the Christmas lights enhance the architecture of Regent Street, Marylebone High Street and our other favourite shopping thoroughfares. For me, buying presents in a bricks-andmortar store is an up-close-and-personal thrill that online can never match. But it’s also a trip into our city’s long history as a great shopping destination – of which there’s evidence in some unexpected places. Cheapside, one of the Square Mile’s most ancient streets, takes its name from the Saxon word ‘chepe’, meaning market. My list of shopping destinations celebrates our retail heritage, in its current and past glories. In the West End, I’ll begin in Wigmore Street, pausing to admire number 33, a stupendous Edwardian baroque structure which started life as department store Debenham & Freebody, but is now mostly offices. Further down the road at number 50-54, stands John Bell & Croyden, pharmacy extraordinaire and source of exclusive skincare brands, where I’ll select my Christmas-party red lipstick. This business, founded in 1798, moved in 1912 to these grand 19th century premises which formerly served as a gentlemen’s club (boasting a dance hall, so ladies were evidently welcome). The next stop on my time-travelling route is Bond Street, which has been a location to see beautiful people and beautiful things since the 18th century. But buffed up and looking its best for Christmas, it provides an

I will follow in the footsteps of Oscar Wilde who declared this to be the ‘chosen resort of the artistic shopper’ example of the creativity at which our city excels. I may not be in the market for a Rolex – maybe later next year when the new Watches of Switzerland flagship on Old Bond Street is set to open. The store’s handsome design should provide the appropriate sense of occasion for the purchase of expensive timepieces. My penchant for leather-bound diaries, a lower-priced indulgence, means I’ll have an excuse to drop into Smythson, the stationer

LET IT GLOW, LET IT GLOW, LET IT GLOW Fortnum & Mason festooned with festive lights

and luggage business. Its Grade-II listed shop at 131-134 New Bond Street is also a treat. A pot of jam is another of the things I want for Christmas, but only if it’s raspberry from Fortnum & Mason. When this emporium – at number 181 Piccadilly – first opened its doors in 1840, it marked a significant moment in the development of London retail. The windows featured plate glass, a recent innovation that allowed the eyecatching display of goods, an opportunity it continues to relish every Christmas. But Fortnum & Mason is not Piccadilly’s longest-reigning retail star. Hatchards, the bookseller, has been at number 187 since 1797. This is where the poet Byron, the Duke of Wellington and Oscar Wilde bought their books, which should impress any recipient of a page-turner bought there this December. The closure of several department stores has been one of the most dispiriting trends in the London retail scene this century. Still, I’ll be dropping in to John Lewis for its homeware – I have a weakness for a Christmas cushion – and Liberty for its beauty hall. At Liberty, I’ll again be following in the footsteps of Oscar Wilde who declared this arts and crafts era haven to be the “chosen resort of the artistic shopper”. When I’m browsing, I always look down at the floors which were made from the timbers of ancient battle ships, broken up in the 1920s. I shall also be returning, after many years, to Harvey Nichols, which began as a draper in 1831 and has stood on the corner of Sloane Street and Knightsbridge since 1894. Will it be a highlight of December 2023’s journey into the best that London retail can offer? Who knows? But stepping into a London Christmas is all about surprises. L

he prime London sales market remains subdued. Prices in October were down 2.5 per cent on a year ago, continuing what has now become a long-term trend of slight price falls and slight rises. In short, a steady market. It’s a similar story for new instructions, which over October fell by 7.1 per cent on an annual basis – again indicative of recent trends. But as the length of time it’s taking to sell a home increases, new instructions coming to the market are being added to existing stock. This means that the overall numbers of homes available to buy has increased slightly. It’s transactions that have taken the greatest hit. The number of homes sold fell by 31.3 per cent compared to last October. Although transactions were still at relatively high levels back in late 2022, so today’s fall may not be so surprising. However, for now, both buyers and sellers are holding tight. We expect to see sales activity end the year down 20 per cent on 2022, but slightly up on the pre-pandemic average of 2017-19. The big prime London story continues to be the rental market. Rents are now 30 per cent higher than pre-pandemic. A shortage of stock continues to be the problem, but we are beginning to see a small rise in new rental properties coming to the market. L lonres.com

PROPERTY OF THE MONTH

CHARMED CORNER

Elias Raymond, Savills: “Properties of these proportions, style and finish can be hard to come by. Occupying a corner plot on Chalcot Square, this family home is flooded with light from its triple aspect and south-facing position. Notable previous residents of the square include Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, Alan Bennett and Robert Plant. The home blends old and new, with elegant cornicing, marble and stone tiles and a hand-crafted staircase sympathetic to its Victorian era and Grade II-listing, as well as mod-cons like Sonos sound systems and electronic smart controls – a specification that buyers at this level want. I’d expect interest from families looking to make a future-proof move. The self-contained apartments on the lower floor lend themselves to grandparents, older children or a live-in nanny.” Chalcot Square is for sale at offers over £10m, through Savills, savills.com and Knight Frank, knightfrank.co.uk
