S

ummer is, without a doubt, my favourite season. The longer evenings make parenting so much easier, and you have the added bonus of extra daylight after bedtime to sit outside and enjoy a large glass of wine. For anyone looking to maximise the potential of their garden, we have a plethora of fun ideas, including the most tremendous tripod slide that has to be seen to be believed (p.72).

With a line-up of fabulous festivals ahead of us, we’ve rounded up our favourite familyfriendly options (p.82), we profile Pearl Lowe’s new children’s collection which is sure to let little imaginations run free (p.30), and if you can’t make it along to a festival yourself we’ve also got Carole Middleton’s tips for planning a mini version in the comfort of your own garden (p.60) – the perfect solution for a summer party theme!

We’ve so enjoyed trying out Gwyneth Paltrow’s new recipe book, packed with ideas for the ‘super busy’, she’s sweetly dedicated to all her friends’ children, and of course to Apple and Moses. As a mother herself, she’s included recipes that every parent needs in their arsenal, and we’ve chosen three that will work for all the family (p.64).

While healthy eating has always been on Gwyneth’s radar, it has also been hitting the headlines recently. Following the Government’s announcement to introduce a tax on sugar, we investigate what this implies and hear what children think of the move (p.69). And, talking of headlines, we’ve also been taking a closer look at how children consume the news itself. With news outlets launching specific products for children, it’s fascinating to consider the impact of such exposure – should we be sheltering our children from horror stories, or explaining why and how these events came to pass? Read all about it… on page 92.

In other news, I’ve made it back to Little London HQ after my maternity leave.

I’ve watched my tiny baby develop a mini personality, and my toddler has also grown up to become a little girl. In between tantrums, I’m swotting up on how to help your child express themselves (p.89). Read and learn!

I love how easy it is to be a parent at this time of year; just to be outside, let your children run around, then fall into bed at night. Bliss.

What do you like to do as a family?

We love being by the water. We try to get to the coast as often as we can, but are equally happy watching the ducks on the river in Richmond Park or at Chiswick House.

Top healthy snack recommendation?

Nairn’s mini oatcakes with avocado – my little boy can’t get enough of them. And slices of Pink Lady apple with cheese.

time for myself I become exhausted. I love doing Pilates, and I go to Eqvvs, a small gym in Kensington. My trainer, Nic, is tough but encouraging, which is exactly what I need.

For an extra special treat, I visit Marlene at Acu-Facial in Notting Hill for facials.

Where do you live in London?

We live in West London, which I love for its ethnic diversity and amazing parks. The area I live in also has a mix of independent shops and galleries that make it more interesting than your average high street.

How has motherhood changed things for you?

When I had my first child, I was 24, so pretty young by modern standards. My world was turned upside down but it was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.

Responsibility can have an amazing effect on people and really turn them into adults.

As for the amount of love they bring – it is quite overwhelming when you think about it.

You opened your toy shop, Honeyjam, in Notting Hill 10 years ago this year.

What inspired you to set up shop?

We opened Honeyjam because we felt shopping for toys had become uninspiring and all the flat box displays felt soulless. My business parter Honey and I both had fond childhood memories of toy shops overflowing with exciting toys and pocket-money treats, and we wanted to create somewhere where the actual toys had more play value than the box!

Do you have any favourite toys?

We have many favourites! Of course, our handmade limited-edition Merrythought bears are a classic. We also love A Girl for All Time dolls. They remind me of the porcelain dolls my granny used to give me, except these have much more glamourous wardrobes! My children’s favourites are the Hansa animals.

They are incredibly life-like stuffed animals, and what makes them special is that each LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

What if you want to escape the city?

one is hand finished. No two look exactly the same. My daughter loves the penguins, and my son the rabbits. My new favourites are The Fairy Garden (quite literally a growing garden for fairies), the Janod story boxes, and beautiful unicorn journals, which I would have worshipped when I was a child.

Do you still have any of your old childhood toys?

I found one the other day, and it brought back such memories – I thought it was long gone!

It’s a yellow tweed tortoise with blue glass bead eyes. It had a bigger one with it, too, but sadly that really has disappeared. The feel and smell of it brought me right back to being four years old when I was given it.

Describe a typical weekend at home.

We have a dog, so most weekends are based around where we will walk her. I love Hyde Park, but also Wormwood Scrubs, Hampstead Heath and Kenwood House.

We usually try to get some friends together for Sunday lunch, although it’s always last minute! Weekends for us are about being out in nature, and coming home and relaxing.

Where do you go for some me-time?

It is few and far between, as you can imagine.

However, I have learnt that if I don’t make 19

My husband is from Wales, so we usually hightail it up there. We have been renovating a farm, so we go up to work on it and relax.

You grew up in Dublin; do you like to encourage your children’s sense of their Irish heritage?

Absolutely! I read them our old fables, poetry and, of course, I play a lot of our music – Van Morrison and Thin Lizzy are favourites. I recently made them watch a documentary by Bob Geldof about W.B Yeats, and there were a lot of good programmes about the Easter Rising, which I watched with them.

In your opinion, what are the best toys to get kids outside this summer?

There are so many great outdoor toys these days – easy-fill water balloons, hula hoops, den kits, mini kites that don’t require wind and Air Warriors (a brilliant alternative to Nerf guns, much more powerful!). Plus, water pistols and croquet kits are always fun.

What’s next for Honeyjam?

We have our third collaboration with Merrythought coming out soon. We are also launching our Party Bag service, which gives busy parents one less thing to think about when planning their child’s party, and can be ordered online from the comfort of your sofa at honeyjam.co.uk. L

Where I live is very magical – it’s that kind of magic I wanted to put into the costumes

earl Lowe is really quite remarkable. Not because she belonged to the notorious Primrose Hill party set in the 1990s, or because of her well-documented battle with drug addiction. But because of her seemingly endless creative talent.

A master of reinvention, she has gone from Britpop frontwoman to aspiring actress at LAMDA to interior designer, womenswear designer, author and, most recently, children’s fashion designer. “I can’t do things unless I am passionate about them. There has to be a burning desire,” she admits.

Throughout this creative journey, she has also been a mother, first to supermodel Daisy, now 27, and later to Alfie, 19, Frankie, 16, and Betty, 10. “I’ve been a mother more than half my life – it’s all I’ve known,” she says.

“I feel quite weird now that I don’t have little ones running around. But now I have the whole day to work, which I’m really enjoying.”

Her latest endeavour, which she does alongside her interior design business, is Petite Pearl Lowe. A luxury fancy dress collection for girls aged two to 10 years, it launched exclusively in Harrods last October and will pop up in Selfridges this Christmas.

She is deservedly proud of it. “When I walk into Harrods and see the collection, I get a real buzz out of it,” she says. “I think, ‘Wow, this is so how I saw it.’”

What she had ‘seen’ was a whimsical collection of vintage circus-inspired costumes made in Britain using the highest-quality silk, tulle and sequins. Think harlequin-print leotards and dazzling capes. “It’s a bit fantasy, a bit fun, a bit dress-up.”

For SS16, Pearl has added five Lewis Carroll-inspired pieces to the original 20-piece collection. “Where I live in Somerset, it’s very magical – like Alice in Wonderland. And it’s that kind of magic I wanted to put into the costumes.” Highlights include the Queen of Hearts jacket and the Butterfly costume, which is her and Betty’s favourite. “We are obsessed with it!”

The brand is, she says, very much a reflection of her children, who are all born performers and were constantly in fancy dress outfits growing up. “They’re all quite eccentric. And that’s what the brand is about – performance as much as fashion.”

But what prompted the move into childrenswear? After her womenswear collaboration with Peacocks ended and her 33

book, Pearl Lowe’s Vintage Craft, had hit the shelves, she was “at a bit of a loss at what to do”. So, she went looking for inspiration.

“I found this pink sequined fabric and made a pair of rich, silk-lined cabaret curtains for Betty’s room,” she explains. “And it went from there. I had all these costumes I’d collected that Betty wouldn’t wear because they were too scratchy, so I started making patterns and doing my own interpretation of them using soft silks and sequins.”

Further inspiration came from Cecil Beaton, the English fashion photographer, who won an Academy Award for his stage and costume designs. “I got quite obsessed with him. On a Thursday afternoon, he was

always in a soft-top car driving down to the countryside. He’d get everyone to dress up in circus outfits and take pictures. I think it’s such a great idea. I have got the best dressingup box you can ever imagine and I always get Betty and her friends to dress up and then take photos of them.”

She is also heavily influenced by the vintage styling of traditional touring circus company, Giffords Circus, and is working on a new collection for boys this year that will feature fabulous top hats and ringmaster jackets.

AW16 will see a range of teen and women’s leotards, too. “[Vintage] has been my philosophy since I was a very young girl,” says Pearl. “I love it because no one else is going to be wearing it.

I had a boiler suit when I was little and went to a party and there was another girl wearing one. I went home and said to my mother, ‘Never, ever am I going to put that on again!’”

Pearl also appreciates the way things were made in the old days. “They handmade dresses for women with boobs and bums,” she explains. “These days I look awful in designer 34

stuff. I think that’s why my [Peacocks] dresses were so successful and still are on eBay. Dresses for real women, not stick-thin girls.”

Although Pearl was a latecomer to fashion, design has always been in her DNA. “My mother had a boutique in Covent Garden and I designed my first collection for it when I was 10,” she says. “I still remember the amazing feeling I felt when someone bought a piece.”

She even had an offer of a place at Central Saint Martins at one point. Her mum – still an interior designer to the A-list – was desperate for her to go. But it fell on deaf ears.

“I was rebelling and went off and joined this rock band. My mother was appalled. But I’ve come full circle now.”

It was the move from London to Somerset in 2005 that changed everything, “our whole being, our whole life – I knew I had to get out,” shares Pearl. “I lived this debauched, mental life and I knew, a) I wouldn’t be a good mother and, b) I wouldn’t have a career.”

e’re half way through the year already and I can’t quite believe it. June is my favourite month to be in London, there’s so much fun to be had.

Something I particularly love about this time of year is being able to go to the park after school. The lighter evenings mean you can stay out later, and my son loves nothing more than taking a ball to the nearest spot of ‘green’ and kicking it about with friends.

This time of year calls for ice cream and frozen lollies, so I’ve promised the children we’ll start making their favourite fully-loaded frozen bananas. They’re so easy to make and great for pudding after a barbecue. I’ll also be packing them up for our many picnics in the park. I’ll be sure to have my trusty Go Everywhere mat from Avery Row, too, which doubles up as a play mat and picnic rug.

Last but not least, I’ll be doing a bit of retail therapy for the children before going on holiday, and top of my wish list has to be the adorable paint-detail sandals from Toms. • Peel the bananas and cut each one in half.

Insert a lollipop stick into each one.

A

bove my desk is a doodle drawn by my daughter last year. ‘Happy Father’s Day’ it shouts in brightly coloured letters, above a picture in which I resemble a hot air balloon.

I’m always told the camera adds 10lb, but that is nothing compared to the psychological damage a child’s drawing can do to your confidence.

When this year’s drawing comes, I will swap it over and pop the old one into a folder in my filing cabinet that contains a whole world of her scribbles.

Every so often, while I’m searching for a tax bill, I rediscover her file and it never fails to make me smile.

In my desk drawer, amongst the keys and coins and staples, is my son’s first passport photo. He looks like a hard boiled egg but his six-month-old gurn makes me grin every time. It has been sitting in my drawer for three years, and there is every chance it will still be there three decades on.

And I love nothing more than using these things to tell my children stories about the people they once were. But in doing so, we have developed a problem. They now want everything to be saved for tomorrow.

Every day my son arrives home from school with paint-crusty paper glued with pasta, pipe cleaners and tissue.

“What is it, my boy?”

“This is Spiderman and this is a fire engine he’s carrying, and he’s flying over the world with it. Actually that’s not the world, I’ve changed that to you, Daddy.”

“Of course it is! I love it, kiddo.”

My wife and I look at each other and nod.

Surely he won’t miss this one? Respectfully, it finds its way to the bin.

a shrine of hama beads, cereal boxes, straws and loo rolls.

And when she pleads for her creations to be spared, it weighs heavily on the conscience. If she treasures it, should we not be treasuring it, too?

Perhaps we are denying ourselves a piece of gold. If Tracey Emin’s unmade bed was shortlisted for the Turner Prize, is my daughter’s bedroom actually a modern masterpiece?

So the spidery scribbles are being saved and finding their way into a box that will eventually find its way up into the rafters. And there it will find other boxes that contain my old photos, school books, certificates and diaries.

Most of it is junk, but it’s my junk and one day those boxes will take me back to people, places, times and events that would otherwise be long gone.

I saw it recently with my father, who laughed so hard on rediscovering his old school reports that we thought it was his final act. He is still quoting his history master’s analysis of his eight-year-old self: “Doesn’t try. I’m not sure it would make a difference even if he did.” It was memory lane at its most beautiful.

I read an astonishing statistic this week that Generation Y will take nearly 26,000 selfies in their lifetime. That is pouting into the phone once a day, everyday, for the first 71 years they are on this earth. But does that also mean that in years to come, all memories will be stored in the Cloud rather than the attic?

Not in our house. We’re embracing the old school and creating dusty time capsules for the children to treasure. I don’t want my children to look back on edited, enhanced and filtered memories. I want them to remember life as an egg box covered in glitter. L

TIKKA MASALA ROAST CHICKEN

SERVES 4 GLUTEN-FREE

For this fun twist on a classic, a simple roast chicken is amped up with the complex flavors of Indian chicken tikka masala. The yogurt helps keep the chicken moist, and the natural sugar in the tomato paste creates a beautifully burnished, crispy skin.

INGREDIENTS • 2 garlic cloves, finely grated • 1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated • 1 tbsp tomato paste • ¼ cup whole milk yoghurt • 1 tsp garam masala • 1 tsp tandoori spice • 1½ tsp salt • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 whole chicken (3½-4lbs), spatchcocked or butterflied

SEARED SCALLOPS WITH WATERCRESS AND ASPARAGUS

SERVES 4 GLUTEN-FREE, UNDER 30 MINUTES

We know scallops intimidate a lot of cooks, but they’re actually one of the easiest and quickest types of seafood to prepare. The most important things to remember are to get the skillet nice and hot, to make sure the scallops are dry so they sear rather than steam, and to not touch them until they’ve developed a crust on one side and are almost cooked through. Here we pair them with a warm spring salad and a quick brown butter sauce.

INGREDIENTS • 16 diver scallops • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Juice of 1 small lemon • Splash of champagne vinegar • 1 tbsp finely diced shallot • 4 tbsp olive oil • 12 asparagus spears, tough ends removed • 1 bunch watercress, cleaned and dried • Large handful of sugar snap peas, cut into ½-inch slices (about 1 cup) • 4 tbsp (½ stick) unsalted butter • Coarse sea salt • Lemon wedges, for serving (optional)

METHOD Preheat the oven to 400˚F. In a medium bowl, whisk together the garlic, ginger, tomato paste, yogurt, garam masala, tandoori spice, salt, and olive oil.

Rub the marinade all over the chicken, making sure to get as much as possible underneath the skin.

Place the chicken on a wire rack positioned over an aluminum foil–lined baking sheet (or in a roasting pan) and roast for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Check after 40 minutes, and if the chicken is browning too much, cover with foil.

Let rest for 10 minutes before carving.

METHOD Remove the scallops from the fridge, use a paper towel to dry them, and season with salt and pepper.

Mix the lemon juice, vinegar, shallot and 1 tbsp of the olive oil in a large bowl. Use a peeler to shave 4 of the asparagus spears and add them to the bowl with the watercress. Cut the remaining 8 spears into ½-inch pieces.

Heat a large sauté pan over mediumhigh heat. Add 1 tbsp of the olive oil, the snap peas and the asparagus pieces, season with salt and pepper, and sauté for 1 to 2 minutes. Add to the bowl with the watercress and shaved asparagus.

Add the remaining 2 tbsp of olive oil to the pan, then add the scallops, leaving them to sear on one side until almost cooked through, 3 to 5 minutes.

Flip the scallops, then reduce the heat to low and add the butter. The butter will sizzle and start to turn brown. Turn off the heat (the residual heat will finish cooking the scallops).

Toss the salad to combine. Divide among four plates, arrange the scallops on top, and pour the brown butter over.

Garnish with a little course sea salt.

SERVES 4 GLUTEN-FREE

This ubiquitous combo has been around for ages. I’ve had a million iterations of this soup, but our version, naturally sweet from sautéed onion and bright with lots of fresh ginger, is particularly good (and easy!). Don’t bother peeling the carrots for this recipe – just give them a good scrub to remove any dirt.

INGREDIENTS • 2 tbsp coconut oil • 1 large onion, thinly sliced • Salt • 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • 2 tbsp chopped fresh ginger • 1 tsp ground cumin • ½ tsp ground coriander • ½ tsp garam masala • 1lb carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces • 3 cups chicken or vegetable stock • Freshly ground black pepper

METHOD Heat the coconut oil in a heavybottomed saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and a pinch of salt, cover the pot, and sauté over low heat for about 20 minutes, until the onion is very soft and sweet.

Add the garlic and ginger, sauté for 1 minute, then add the cumin, coriander, and garam masala. Sauté for another minute, then add the carrots, stock, and another big pinch of salt. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn down the heat and simmer gently for about 20 minutes, or until the carrots are very tender.

Carefully transfer the soup in batches to a high-speed blender, or blend the soup directly in the pot with an immersion blender. Season to taste with salt and pepper. L

particularly fizzy drinks, which are popular amongst children. It won’t apply to pure fruit juices or milk-based beverages. Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Irn-Bru, which have more than eight grams of sugar per 100ml, are just some of the drinks which will be taxed at the higher rate of around 24p litre, while brands such as Fanta, Sprite and Dr Pepper, which have more than five grams of sugar per 100ml, will pay around 18p. The tax won’t, however, come into effect until 2018 to give the drinks industry time to reformulate its recipes.

t was the surprise announcement in the Chancellor’s budget – a sugar tax to be imposed on soft drinks. The aim? To tackle childhood obesity by raising an estimated £520 million a year and spending that – in England, at least – on funding sport in primary schools.

George Osborne’s announcement came as a “bolt from the blue” say commentators and even Jamie Oliver, who had been campaigning tirelessly for it for over a year, said he was “especially shocked”.

Drinks have been targeted because a typical can contains enough sugar to take someone over their recommended daily intake in one hit. They’re regarded as ‘empty calories’ as they have no nutritional benefit and companies are seen to target their high-calorie products at the young, with fizzy drinks being the single largest source of sugar in the diets of the UK’s children and teenagers.

Not surprisingly, the tax has been welcomed by health campaigners, but it’s interesting to find that young people are also very much in support of it.

First News, the weekly newspaper for children, asked children aged seven to 14 whether they thought the tax should be extended to cover all sugary drinks.

The paper had a massive response, with 68% being in favour. Georgia, 11, commented, “Anything with lots of sugar in should have a tax on it,” while 10-year-old Jeevan said, “I think that tax should be on all sugary drinks as people have too much sugar and this is making them obese, and obese children usually become obese adults.”

These comments were countered by others who sided with the drinks industry in thinking that “people should have the right to choose”. But amongst all the responses, it was interesting to see just how many times ‘obesity’ was mentioned.

One in 10 children starting primary school in England is obese and by the time they leave, that figure has increased to one in five. Perhaps no surprise then, that it’s an issue with which children

are familiar, although new research by University College London found recognition of childhood obesity amongst parents to be low.

It’s not just about obesity, though. The other big issue the sugar tax is hoping to tackle is tooth decay. Research by the Royal College of Surgeons in England found that almost a third of five year olds are suffering from tooth decay and it’s the most common reason why five to nine year olds are admitted to hospital. Sugar consumption has a big part to play, with current levels far exceeding recommendations. The British Dental Association labelled the tax “progress”, but countered that by saying a multi-agency approach was needed to “confront this preventable epidemic.” Dentists and health campaigners are hoping this will come in the Prime Minister’s Childhood Obesity Strategy, which is due to be published in the coming months.

“We need a well-considered, brave and bold strategy of policies, initiatives, incentives and communitybased interventions which together with the tax can be a powerful tool for change,” urges Jamie Oliver, adding, “David Cameron needs to act like a parent and not a politician.”

Sugar tax may be seen as a significant step in the fight against childhood obesity, but for many it’s just the start. Campaigners believe there needs to be an assault on the food and drinks industry as a whole.

ince its grand opening last year, everybody has been raving about Soho Farmhouse, the latest outpost of the Soho House group. Though my husband and I were initially tempted to sneak off for a weekend à deux, we decided to take our two children, Jago, four, and Georgia, 18 months, to see if it might just prove the perfect child-friendly country escape instead.

Our home for the weekend was a beautiful riverside wooden chalet, set over two floors.

It’s brilliant for families because it meant we could make the kids’ breakfast, heat bottles in the microwave, and so on without having to call room service. Though there wasn’t much we were lacking, as the staff had thought of everything from travel cot and baby monitor to wellington boots in all our sizes.

Upon arrival we took the children for tea in the Main Barn, which, with its log fires, sofas and open kitchen offered plenty to look at and room for the children to stretch their legs. Later, Jack and I opted for a bottle of rosé and cheeseburgers from room service before an indulgent Cowshed bubble bath, taking full advantage of the products on offer.

We were up bright and early on Saturday.

Everybody cycles around the complex, so our bikes were fitted with kids’ seats, but the staff

had also fitted a bike for Jago with stabilisers, giving him his first taste of cycling freedom.

After a morning of exploring, we headed to the Barwell Barn for lunch. The enormous room is laid with long tables, where families sit hugger-mugger in noisy chaos. The buffet has great options for the kids and everything from hot roasts to healthy salads for adults.

Best of all, it opens out onto a vast patio, set up with table tennis, football and croquet.

During the afternoon, the children rode on Shetland ponies, and we spent time in the Teeny Barn. This playroom proved a godsend when it rained. Jago loved the fancy dress, and The bright and airy Teeny Georgia had a captive audience, so was happy.

We bumped into friends and had cocktails in the Main Barn, before drawing straws about who would do the early morning shift with Georgia at 6am.

On Sunday morning, any sign of a hangover was remedied with a swim in the indoor-outdoor pool. Our weekend ended with a horse and cart taking us back to our car, which was probably the only way you could have dragged us away, as we could have happily stayed, forever. LATITUDE With an emphasis on performance of all kinds, each year Latitude provides stacks of entertainment for the family, without being overwhelmed by little ones. Bursting with comedy, theatre and music acts, including Russell Howard, the Young Vic and Royal Court, New Order and The Maccabees, adults will be more than catered for in 2016.

In the meantime, the family area is a festival in its own right. The Enchanted Garden camping site will run its own events from 9am (well before the rest of the festival wakes up). LARMER TREE FESTIVAL This intimate and eccentric festival, set in stunning Victorian gardens, returns with an absorbing programme of music, comedy, poetry and theatre for festival-goers of all generations.

The much-anticipated line-up for 2016 includes Jamie Cullum and Tom Odell, plus preview acts from the Edinburgh Fringe. For the very first time, all children under 10 years go free and will enjoy a packed schedule of events from puppetry to disco, and sensory play for underfives. The dedicated Family Lawn will provide a welcoming hub to kick back and relax, too.

CAMP BESTIVAL

As anyone who has been to Bestival will testify, DJ Rob da Bank certainly knows how to put on a party, and the family orientated Camp Bestival, on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, is no exception. The theme for 2016 is Outer Space and ‘out of this world’ acts, activities and shows promise an action-packed weekend. If you tire of space, there will be a Tudor themed area, talent shows, soft play, Bollywood shows and more. When it comes to music, headliners include Fatboy Slim and Turin Brakes as well as Junior Jungle Rave and the Royal Albert Hall’s Space Symphony.

Tips for teaching your child to swim… for every mini shark adventure!

Children love to swim and generally as a rule the earlier you get them into the water the better.

When teaching your child in the water make sure your eye level is the same as your child's and always maintain a smile – kids pick up on negativity so remember to reinforce the positive and never use negative comments. Lavish your child with praise in the water and you will see their confidence grow immensely.

A fun way to teach children to breath properly in the water is to use phrases like “talk to the fish” by blowing bubbles in the water, or “listen to the fish” by turning the head with an ear in the water and breathing in. If your child really doesn’t want to get into the water then don’t force them – play it down and suggest they sit on the side with their feet over the edge so they can kick and splash the water instead. Just sitting will increase their confidence – not every child wants to jump straight in!

Poor body image and issues at school are cited as the main causes of stress for children in England

aving skipped into nursery every day for six months, one morning my typically sunny two-year-old Jago dissolved into a fit of rage and tears and refused to go in. He was his usual self at home, and his teacher reassured us he didn’t seem unhappy at nursery, yet his refusal to go became a daily battle of wills. We tried every trick in the book; persuasion, negotiation, bribery, to no avail until one day, three months later, he moseyed into nursery without a backward glance and normality was restored. It was as if nothing had ever happened.

Any parent will tell you that young children are famously difficult to read, but if Jago had a way of expressing why he had taken against nursery – fear, feelings of abandonment or even an issue with another child – it could have spared us a great deal of worry. Like many parents, it’s times like this that made my interest pique when I heard about the RULER programme being rolled out in primary schools across London, to teach emotional intelligence to pupils. The acronym stands for Recognising your emotions; Understanding them; Labelling them and Expressing them in a Regulated way.

Every morning children are asked to plot their feelings on a ‘mood meter’, with red meaning angry, blue for sad, green equalling calm and yellow meaning happy. They are taught to express what has made them feel this way, and then taught how to read their classmates feelings and be empathetic, too.

The programme was designed by Marc Brackett, a psychologist and head of the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence at Yale University. Following the unprecedented success of the scheme in the US, Lulu Luckock, a British teacher with more than 30 years experience, is spearheading the

Which is why Brackett, himself a victim of childhood bullying, and Luckock believe the programme could transform the lives of thousands of students in Britain. “Youngsters are growing up with too much information to process and not enough down time,” says Luckock. “As a result they become more isolated. The rise in mental health problems in young people is a frightening reflection of the complicated

Helping the children regulate their emotions has made a huge difference in how they communicate childhoods of children today,” she adds.

According to Brackett, if children are better able to label and articulate their emotions, the people around them are better able to support them through their childhood.

Along with the mood meter, RULER’s other ‘anchor’ tools include the Blueprint to help the children manage conflict, and the Class Charter where the pupils and staff say how they want to feel when they are there.

The parents adopt this at home, too.

“Helping the children to regulate their emotions and take a step back before reacting has made a huge difference in how they communicate,” says Luckock, and parents 90

Likewise, Claire Boyle has seen a dramatic change in her son Harrison, three. “He’s now able to deal more calmly with unpleasant feelings, there are less tantrums and loss of control, for both of us!” she says. When Brackett explains, “emotions are the drivers of attention, decision-making, relationships and health” it’s no wonder it’s such an important issue to tackle when they’re young. etrayed by the government”, “Terror murder suspect released”, “Got him – the world’s most wanted man.” These are just some of the headlines that have appeared over the past few weeks and they’re by no means the worst. Little surprise then, that many parents feel it’s best to shield their children from the news. But is that the right thing to do?

Anna Bassi, editor of the newly-launched The Week Junior magazine doesn’t think so.

In fact she thinks, in an age of 24/7 news and online access, it’s an almost impossible task and a potentially detrimental one. Anna believes that while every parent has the right to decide what to tell their child, “you can’t wrap children up in blankets their whole lives.” In her experience, “children will hear things from their peers – often the distorted playground version – and so it’s far better they hear things from their trusted source – you.”

Nicky Cox, editor of First News, agrees.

“News isn’t as easy to escape as when we were young and the family sat down together to watch Newsround. It’s around us constantly and if we don’t talk directly to kids, we’re doing them a disservice.”

So, when should you start introducing the concept of news to children? Both Anna and Nicky agree there’s no specific age as children are naturally curious. They say parents will know the right time to engage children and suggest adults arm themselves with the facts about specific stories and never refuse to answer questions, as that just fuels fear. They stress the importance of providing reassurance (“the people responsible have been caught”, “no one was hurt”) and of putting stories in context (“there’s such a small chance of anything like this happening here or to you”).

Anna also advises parents not to forget the good stuff. A mix of light-hearted and serious stories will, she says, fuel their curiosity in the

world around them.

Surprisingly, in an age where many children are often seen to be glued to their phones or tablets, both The Week Junior and First News come in print format and are going from strength to strength. Both titles, along with Time For Kids, are also available in schools. Nicky says some of her newspaper’s popularity is fuelled by parents who want their children to have time away from their screens, equally, “kids have a real desire for printed matter and love to dip in and out of stories in a way they can’t do online,” says Anna. But neither is naive enough to ignore the digital world completely. The Week Junior’s digital strategy is in development and First News has plans to expand its online offering and will start to broadcast news bulletins presented by children this September.

But what about Newsround? Forty-four years on from its first broadcast, it remains a respected and trusted news source for young people and adults alike. Editor Lewis James credits its success with the fact it has always put its audience first, from telling stories in a way that is sensitive and age-appropriate to

Technology may have moved on since Newsround began, but its core values remain the same, winning high praise from parents.

INTERVIEW

How did you come to own GLTC?

My wife Annie and I had three children under four, we were already customers and fans of the brand when I bumped into the founders in 2004. I persuaded them to sell GLTC and I’ve been running it ever since.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Designing and making stuff for children is great fun. I love the variety.

What’s a typical day like for you?

The best thing about running your own business is being involved in everything.

I could be on location at a product shoot one day, and choosing new floor tiles for the showroom the next. I might also spend time with our design team looking at new toy garages or bedding designs.

Has it helped having your own children to try products out on, so to speak?

You have to accept blunt feedback when you ask your children’s opinions on new products. My children have been involved in the business from day one. They were our original testing team, but now they’re older (11, 12, and 15) our testing team are recruited from customers and their children, and those relationships are incredibly important to us.

Where do you like to go in the capital?

Annie and I love where we live in South London, and we love our food. Maltby Street and Spa Terminus in Bermondsey are great places to stock up on good quality ingredients and great coffee. The kids love a burger from Byron’s in The Cut and you can’t beat the view from Waterloo Bridge or Greenwich Park.

What’s been your biggest challenge?

Running a business while being a parent is a huge challenge. I’m lucky to be able to use my experiences of parenting to make products that help parents organise their homes without compromising on design or quality.

And your proudest moment?

Opening the GLTC showroom. Annie and I spent the best part of two years planning the best way to bring GLTC to the high street.

It’s been a huge effort by the whole team and I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved.

What’s your advice for any fledgling children’s brands out there?
