t the tail end of the Easter term last year, and just after the first lockdown was announced, we launched our third awards campaign; little did we know what was to come. And yet, even with all the challenges schools and their communities faced – and the rapid turnaround from classroom lessons to home learning in late March – we were simply amazed to receive nominations from hundreds of schools.

These awards were established to celebrate the quality of the student experience in independent schools, and to say we were thrilled with the level of response is an understatement. I’d like to thank them for their support! The panel of judges hugely enjoyed reading and considering all the entries. Judging Chair, Dr Helen Wright, recounts the selection process on page 5, as well as our virtual awards ceremony held in October, where attendees tuned in from all around the country and mainland Europe.

Congratulations to all the schools who won an award. This special awards supplement is dedicated to the winning schools of each of the 20 categories. Schools are communities made up of hundreds of people with a story to tell. Our awards were their chance to do just that, whether it’s a unique and innovative boarding programme (read DLD College London’s story on page 43) or our Rising Star winner, Benjamin Ingram-Moore, a pupil at Bedford School, who masterminded the social media campaign for his late grandfather Captain Sir Tom Moore’s NHS fundraiser. Having led our 2020 judging panel, Helen Wright looks back at a year like no other and gives her recommendations on what judges are looking for in this year’s forthcoming awards campaign

D

edged above the rest, but it was a very high bar, with phenomenal stories of achievement, progress, exposure to a wide range of opportunities, and – especially pertinent this past year – engagement with the local community.

As I wrote last year, in my awards roundup, it should be reassuring for schools to know that the process for determining these awards is a lengthy and detailed one, and begins almost immediately after the previous year’s awards have been presented. The first step is that the judges – and we’re lucky to have a fantastic team of judges, review the criteria for each category, considering whether the wording has enabled schools to present their best work effectively. The judges also often suggest new categories because sometimes really worthy initiatives

espite the pandemic – and how many times have you read these words in the past year? – the Independent Schools of the Year 2020 Awards were, quite simply, amazing!

The awards ceremony was viewed by thousands of people across the world, and the feedback from schools has been fantastic; the awards, as ever, set out to highlight the immense value that independent schools bring to students in their experience of education in school, and they achieved precisely this.

As I said in the streamed ceremony, every single one of the shortlisted and finalist schools deserved praise and commendation, because of the high quality of the entries. The judges merely chose the schools which in their opinion

DAVID MONCRIEFF, Vice-Chair is a publisher specialising in education and heritage, David previously worked as Director of Marketing at Mayfield School and for more than 12 years as Director of Marketing Services at the British Tourist Authority.

CHARLOTTE AVERY is Headmistress of St Mary’s School Cambridge, GSA Vice-President, and a Governor of Haileybury College, Mill Hill School and a local 11-16 MAT. She’s an ISI team inspector and former lay member of the MoD’s Research Ethics Committee.

ANDREW FLECK is Principal of Sedbergh School, Cumbria, having been Head since 2002.

He relinquished that position in order to take up this new role, which encompasses strategic oversight and operational direction. He was previously Head of Ashville College.

ROBIN FLETCHER is Chief Executive of the Boarding Schools’ Association. Robin worked for 30 years as an award-winning journalist, newspaper editor and comms director. He’s a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Honorary Fellow of Cardiff Metropolitan University.

TORY GILLINGHAM is the Managing Director for AMCIS, Admissions, Marketing & Communications in Independent Schools, which has more than 500 schools in membership. She has more than 25 years' marketing experience in the independent schools sector.

JULIE ROBINSON was Head of Ardingly College Junior School and Vinehall Prep School, then Education and Training Director for the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools, before becoming General Secretary of the Independent Schools Council.

might not exactly fit the criteria for the current awards, but could shine in a new category. One of our immovable principles as a judging panel is that we’re here to celebrate the student experience in the sector; if there’s a way for us to facilitate this, through a different award, we’ll consider this.

Once the criteria are firmed up for the year, then the judges are confirmed too – and this year we’re welcoming a couple of equally distinguished educational leaders to our team. With this background structure now in place, the awards are then launched, with emails to schools and details on social media and in Independent School Parent, the magazine sponsor of the awards. If I were to recommend anything to schools at this point, it would be to take time to think and reflect robustly; to stand back and really see the school’s achievements in the positive light that they deserve, because schools are often their own worst critics, and some of the most amazing practice, which impacts directly on students and deepens their experience, can be buried among all the other great things that schools do. My advice to schools would be – look, see, appreciate, celebrate… and then articulate this in a submission to the judges!

their submission in evidence of the impact that it has on the experience of students. The judges will be looking for this evidence in making their judgments, and they also want to be able to hear the story of the initiative or series of initiatives which mark out the school – experience is often best communicated through stories, after all. The judges were struck this past year by the resilience shown by schools in supporting their students during

These awards showcase the positive impact that independent schools have on the lives of young people across our country, in all types of schools, not to mention on the lives of the thousands more who are educated in British independent schools across the

s the school where Charles Darwin learned his schoolboy science, Shrewsbury has always looked to evolve to meet the challenges of the times. Founded in 1552, it has a deep heritage and strong sense of tradition, yet it’s also lightfooted and forward-looking.

Current pupils often share the playful spirit that fuelled the creators of Private Eye, who attended Shrewsbury as boarders, and are encouraged to display the charm and kindness epitomised by former pupil, Sir Michael Palin.

Shrewsbury was one of the nine Clarendon public schools, along with Eton College and Winchester. It’s the big, traditional, all-in boarding school with a twinkle in its eye. Fully co-ed, with more than 800 pupils from the ages of 13 to 18 – 80 per cent of whom are full boarders – Shrewsbury champions the individual but also promotes a strong sense of social responsibility.

To be awarded Independent School of the Year, and also be named joint winners of the Community Outreach category, through this magazine’s awards campaign is a tremendous honour, and a timely validation of the work we do with our local and wider community.

These accolades were awarded at the Independent Schools of the Year 2020 Awards, where Shrewsbury was recognised for the positive impact and contributions pupils and staff have made by working with and supporting communities over the past year and was awarded the top award as the overall Independent School of the Year.

Julie Robinson, CEO of ISC presented the Independent School of the Year Award at the virtual event to Shrewsbury explaining that the school won the overall award selected from all winners for: “…outstanding contribution to student experience in their own school and beyond, working tirelessly and positively, changing the lives of their own students, and the lives of people in the much wider community.”

VALIDATION OF THE WORK WE DO WITH OUR LOCAL AND WIDER COMMUNITY awards, it has only fuelled our appetites to do more. This activity is not windowdressing; nor do we carry out this work because people are breathing down our necks. We do it because it’s at the heart of our identity as a school that educates children to contribute positively to the world around them.

Situated in a graceful loop of the River Severn, on the edge of the county town of Shropshire, we’re deeply embedded in our local community.

This desire to connect and contribute extends beyond Shropshire and is typified by the unique relationship with Shrewsbury House (The Shewsy), a youth club in West Everton.

Our relationship dates back to 1903, when it was formed by Shrewsbury School teachers. Its motto urges that ‘People matter more than things’, although fundraising is vital, it’s the relationships that are most important.

Regular shared activities have been held in the past year as 60 year 12 students took part in a three-day residential programme at the club; 45 year nine students took part in an Introductory Day at the club, and 20 year 10 and 11 students played sporting fixtures, home

and away, against the club. Meanwhile, 20 year 13 prefects organised a Fun Day for the Junior Club.

Our relationship with The Shewsy youth club in Everton, is stronger than ever in its 118th year. Benefiting the local community is a vital goal in itself, but we also want our pupils to leave school with a deep sense of social responsibility to make change happen.

Our community and partnership work continues to evolve as we expand our strategy of Sharing Shrewsbury. A successful joint bid with the Marches Multi-Academy Trust for DFE Partnership will enable us to further develop and enhance our joint work in mathematics and careers with local schools. We have also recently launched a STEM partnership with Imperial College London to support local year 10 pupils by raising their aspirations in the fields of science and maths.

Boys’ School WHITGIFT The South London school’s firm objective of educating young men from diverse backgrounds clinched its win in this category

T

his year marks the 425th anniversary of our founder, John Whitgift (1530 to 1604) laying the stone to mark his vision for a school that would support boys from the local area to access a quality education. It was therefore a wonderful honour to mark this special occasion in our history with the accolade of Independent Boys’ School of the Year at the end of 2020. Whitgift was among some exceptionally worthy finalists and the whole community was humbled that the judging panel selected us. It was a wonderful acknowledgement of the inspiring work of everyone, from the students and staff who make our school what it is, to our hugely supportive parents and alumni.

Our culture and values stem from our 425-year-old legacy of transforming boys’ lives through education. Almost half of our students are currently supported by bursaries and/or scholarships, resulting in a genuinely socially and ethnically diverse community. The driving force behind our vision, Whitgift 2025, is to educate capable young men whatever their background, to achieve beyond what they thought possible and to give back to a society in which they will likely become leaders.

Academic growth, and development inside and outside the classroom have equal weighting; we nurture pupils’ passion for learning and exploration of the new, as well as focusing on skills like independent research, public speaking, critical thinking and active enquiry.

International mindedness is a core value and is enhanced by 110 boarders, as well as growth in our international partnerships and connections with other establishments.

Global Citizenship was introduced

for our lower first form and Ignite – an independent research project for second form – ‘think global, act local’ is the mantra for these. Our students are enriched by exploring causes that are personally meaningful to them. In 2019 Whitgift students also dedicated more than 4,000 hours of their time to volunteering, student hosts developed lifelong friends through the fi ft h summer school, which welcomed 253 boarding children in summer 2019.

The workplace of the future will need solid and adaptable skills, particularly digital. A new subject launched – digital literacy – for the junior years has taught vital skills and ensured students were issued with laptops to support their learning. Their technical skills and platforms within our infrastructure smoothed the transition to remote learning during the pandemic.

Whitgift’s values are reflected in the daily interactions within our community – teachers, support staff and pupils all sharing Christmas lunch together; business breakfasts with parents and visitors to support career choices; sixth formers directing the first formers in their yearly production; or our junior years pupils teaching computing to pupils from local state primary schools – a programme that has run for over 20 years.

Our pupils raise more funds to travel there and perform outreach concerts within schools for the blind, orphanages, and homes for the disabled.

Wandsworth Foundation, which supports 60 pupils here. It’s something we’re incredibly proud of, but there’s still more to do. Our Head of Wellbeing, Jane Mitchell sees this accolade as giving us even greater impetus to further develop our student welfare programme, particularly given the challenges faced during lockdown. Now more than ever, school communities need to build on what they already do to protect, support and educate. Wellbeing is integral to each pupil’s education here. It’s so important to keep learning and developing as a community so that every pupil is empowered to show empathy and compassion towards themselves, each other, the global community and the planet.

Our PHSEE programme encourages pupils to try new things, risk failure, learn to persevere. There’s an emphasis on civic responsibility, sharing your passions with others and taking part in charitable projects.

We’re committed to developing pupil voice; encouraging pupils to make a positive impact. They have an open forum to express how the school is run. Projects have included the fundraising and project management of a war memorial. They made valuable contributions to the design of our new dining hall, helping to create a contemporary environment where the whole school can come together. Pupils are involved in staff appraisals and there are numerous student councils; Cultural Committee, Green Committee, Health and Wellbeing Group, Foundation Committee and our Charity and Outreach team. Prep School ST HILARY’S The Surrey school’s ground-breaking teaching methods encourage critical thinking, creativity and collaboration

A

he judges’ decision to present us with this award was due to our focus on recognising the physical and mental value of sport and sharing the benefits with the wider community, including the children of key workers during lockdown.

The physical and mental wellbeing of pupils is central to Hurst’s sports offering, and equal attention is given to those who simply want to participate as well as the elite performers. The ambition is to create an activity diet that engages all pupils in an enjoyable, challenging and meaningful way – through traditional team sports, individual sports and outdoor pursuits – to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle. We also have a unique player welfare programme with qualified physiotherapists who triage, monitor injuries and support rehabilitation in conjunction with strength and conditioning coaches.

Our philosophy has always been

the importance of sport for all and an outward-looking approach, which includes our own students and staff, and also other schools and organisations in our local community. Our facilities and a sustained programme of development play a significant role in providing a broad range of activities, creating community initiatives and hosting sports events. The college has forged strong links with maintained schools by hosting development days, as well as being a hub for Surrey Storm Netball South and Sussex County Cricket academies, a feeder for the Harlequins Rugby Development Programme and the base for Sussex Hockey.

The sports department responded well to the challenges of the pandemic by delivering a comprehensive

programme, which included options for children of key workers, last summer and now again this term.

When pupils returned for the new academic year last September, the priority was for pupils to be outside in the fresh air as much as possible which meant we utilised our facilities to their best advantage. The requirement for pupils to be in year-group bubbles was a challenge but we overcame this with the introduction of temporary facilities such as a golf driving range and the erection of a marquee to house aerobics and spin classes. Matches against other schools were suspended, but more house competitions and intramural fixtures were introduced as an alternative.

Learning Amazons, an initiative in year eight,

encourages individual exploration, with our girls seeking answers to questions they pose, often characterised by their esoteric depth. We saw record-breaking statistics in 2019-2020, with more than half the year group involved. An impressive public-speaking programme – now rolled out across all year groups – hones the ability to use voice effectively and as they enter sixth form, our girls step into the chairperson’s seat organising high-level subject symposia.

And amazing things happen.

Last year a group of sixth formers approached the headmaster and said they felt passionately about female underrepresentation within the film industry. They launched #SetTheExample – a campaign aiming to champion women in film. They also curated a spectacular three-day film festival across the entire senior school.

During lockdown, a year 11 pupil organised for the school as a whole to write more than 800 letters of gratitude for the NHS – and featured in the Evening Standard.

At each stage of their school journeys, our girls learn to find their voice and use it in a meaningful way – ultimately, to #SetTheExample. ebate and discussion lie at the very heart of South Hampstead High School GDST education, and girls are strongly encouraged to use their voices to effect change. The proactive student Eco Team is supported by our very own UN-certified climate change teacher.

Together, they have championed Project Zero – a strategic initiative aimed at significantly reducing the school’s carbon footprint by our 150th anniversary in 2026. Winning the Green Award was a wonderful recognition of the whole school community’s efforts to mobilise change.

Last year, the school removed singleuse plastic cups and water bottles from the canteen; pupils lobbied to attend climate strikes, introduced meat-free lunches, and organised Eco Week film screenings and pedal-powered smoothie making. Girls grew their own produce at gardening club; wrote to their MPs urging them to take action on climate change; and committed to carbon-offsetting flights for school trips. Even the school’s new state-ofthe-art performance space prioritises sustainability, with solar panelgenerated heating, LED lighting and eco-friendly ventilation.

Our 365 Club encourages pupils to commit to environmental resolutions for 365 days, recognising that even small, individual actions can have a powerful impact. Head Mrs Vicky Bingham resolved to buy no new clothes for a whole year, inspiring pupils to make their own pledges, whether it be relinquishing unsustainable palmoil products or start skateboarding to school. This year, Mrs Bingham is

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, sustainability has remained a priority: we recently moved to a renewable electricity provider, conducted a carbon footprint audit to help us establish measurable goals, and are implementing improved waste and recycling practices. Mindful of the additional waste generated due to Covid-19, we’ve installed disposable mask recycling points and provided reusable masks for sale, with proceeds going to charity. Food waste, as a result of school closures, has been donated to local foodbanks. In lockdown, the Eco Team have continued to play a key role in the London Eco Schools network, a collective of like-minded students advocating for sustainability.

Underpinning our championing of the individual is a tailored approach to pastoral care. Our Centre of Wellbeing was built only two years ago and provides a centralised hub to cater fot the physical and mental health of everyone in our community. Pupils are able to train in peer mentoring and youth mental health to support peers.

Last March, St Dunstan’s was one of the first schools in the UK to move its entire educational offering to online learning, maintaining lesson plans, online support services, and the co-curricular programme, including virtual concerts and house competitions. Our programme has consistently scored 100 per cent parent satisfaction in our regular surveys.

Community Outreach LONGACRE SCHOOL As joint winner with Shrewsbury, the Surrey school was recognised for its strong community links with Elmbridge Retirement Village in the nearby village of Cranleigh

he initiative was started

by Deputy Head, Ben Moir and Head of PrePrep, Nicki Mould. “The idea was inspired by the Channel 4 series Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds, where a nursery school was created within a retirement village in Nottingham. I was looking at the benefits of mixing our children with the residents, particularly as some of our children don’t have living grandparents, or live a long way away from them,” said Mr Moir.

Since September 2019, the children in reception, year one and year two have taken it in turn to visit the residents at Elmbridge on a weekly basis. During their weekly visits, the children spend time reading with the residents and working together on the topics they have been learning about in school.

“The teachers run a normal lesson and the residents join in, supporting the children and often vice versa,” explains Mr Moir. “The children love it and there’s now a core of 12 residents, including one who has symptoms of dementia, taking part.”

The residents have also enjoyed paying regular return visits to the children at Longacre. They’re collected once a week by the school minibus and then spend a couple of hours enjoying singing and craft activities with the children, such as icing biscuits and making clay hedgehogs.

The connection between the school and Elmbridge is now so strong that a number of the residents attended the school’s annual Grandparents’ Afternoon, acting as surrogate grandparents for children who didn’t have relatives attending.

staying in contact with their Elmbridge friends and have been exchanging letters throughout lockdown. The residents were also given a crash course in Zoom, enabling them to ‘visit’ the virtual classroom to exchange news, sing songs and play games.

The Elmbridge residents were over the moon to hear that Longacre had won this Independent School of the Year award for its community outreach.

“They richly deserve this award for taking the initiative to start this link, and also for the amount of planning that they do to make sure that both the

children and seniors benefit fully from their time together,” said Elmbridge Retirement Village resident, Norma.

Fellow resident, Joan had further praise to share: “I was really pleased that Longacre won the award. It was great joining the staff and children to assist with their lessons, but last year was different in so much that we couldn’t meet. But we all kept going and that kept us interested. ere at Elstree, the sense of family and community pulses through every facet of school life, particularly in the boarding house. Our flexible boarding model enables children to learn to live as part of a community and build up their self-confidence, independence and organisational skills.

The Houseparents live in the heart of the house, supported by a strong team of Housemasters, Housemistresses, matrons and nurses; we see the children under our care as an extension of our own families. At least once a week a dorm is invited into the Houseparent’s flat to share hot chocolate and homemade cakes.

Our flexible approach means that children can board anything from one to seven nights a week. They can build up the number of nights that they board gradually, and families are able to find the right balance between school and home life. Boarding at Elstree also prepares children for boarding at their senior schools and beyond.

After a family service supper, there is a wide range of boarders’ clubs to enjoy: torchlight games in the woods, kayaking, board games, table tennis, cricket nets – all within the 150 acres of school grounds. This boarding community is enhanced by our termly events for boarders and their families, such as our legendary murder mystery evening and family quiz.

Big Weekends provide an opportunity for an entire year group to board for a weekend. A Saturday night event, such as a social with another school or bush craft, is followed by another activity on

Sunday morning such as laser tag or Zorb football in the school grounds. These Big Weekends provide an opportunity for a year group to socialise and for day boys to experience boarding.

As part of this community, our older full-boarders are encouraged to look out for and after the younger boarders.

At the weekends there are trips to the cinema, bowling, mountain biking and local water parks, but we also try to replicate what our day boys will be experiencing. The children have a lie-in on Sunday morning followed by a leisurely breakfast. The boarding staff may then take the children on a walk before everyone sits down together for

a big roast lunch! The children always relish the opportunity to have some free-time in the afternoon. After supper, the academic tutor will always run a session to catch up on prep and get organised for the week ahead.

Five carefully curated creative executions that tell a different story of the real-life tales in the classrooms at Handcross Park were created. Each execution tells a story from a different corner of the school. Using clever editing techniques, an element of magic was added to each creative shot to encapsulate the inspiring spirit that it’s impossible not to notice every time you visit Handcross Park.

The Today at School… imagery and messaging formed the basis of a sleek new website. Each creative execution scrolls on the homepage to

hit visitors with an immediate shot of what the school is all about and how their storytelling strategy runs through everything that they do.

To enhance the campaign, all the school’s social media channels were refreshed with the new creative look and all posts now start with the tagline Today at School... The fact that storytelling is now at the very heart of our marketing efforts has proved a wonderful way of showcasing all the brilliant work of our fantastic teachers.

An integrated Today at School… marketing campaign was delivered for the school. Strategic outdoor sites were booked in key locations by the train stations and supermarkets that the school knew their target market frequents. Print slots were booked in both local and national magazines, with the creative ad reflecting the demographic of each key publication.

Online ads and paid for social media campaigns were rolled out to drive users to the new website with great success.

Handcross Park is delighted with the impact that the new campaign has had, both on pupil numbers and pupil retention. alvern St James Girls’ School (MSJ) is made up of five all-girls founding schools that were started by trailblazing women in the 19th century.

These women were the innovators of their time, and early champions of female equality, who believed that women’s education should be equal to that of boys. The Old Girls’ Association (OGA) is our alumnae group, which incorporates Old Girls of Malvern St James, Malvern Girls’ College, St James’s School, The Abbey, St James’s & The Abbey and Lawnside School.

The OGA comprises more 4,000 members, and as well as providing social opportunities to bring old friends back together, we’re firmly committed to providing professional networking opportunities for both our alumnae community and current pupils. We do this by providing a network of contacts across a wealth of professional sectors, incorporating girls who are just starting out, those who are at the top of their industries, and every stage in between.

In 2019, MSJ joined forces with the Old Girls’ Association to launch Malvern Alumnae 100, a showcase of MSJ’s most inspirational alumnae, who have agreed to give their time to inspire and guide the next generation of women, including our current pupils.

Save into a Junior ISA

Up to £9,000 can be invested into a Junior ISA (JISA) in the 2020-21 tax year. Dividends and growth within these accounts are tax free. While only parents or legal guardians can open a JISA, anyone can contribute: grandparents, godparents or even family friends.

The child can access money in a JISA at age 18 to use however they wish – perhaps towards university costs, or to help build a property deposit.

Make use of bare trusts

If you hold assets on behalf of a child in a bare trust, there are no investment limits, and money can be used at any time for the child’s benefit, such as towards school fees.

Gains or income on investments

held in a bare trust can use the child’s personal allowances for tax purposes, and the account can remain open beyond the child’s 18th birthday, although they’re then legally entitled to access the money if they wish.

Pay into a junior pension

If you’d like to give a child a head-start for retirement saving, a junior pension is an attractive option.

You can save up to £2,880 a year into a junior pension account, boosted by tax relief from the government to a maximum of £3,600 a year. Anyone can invest on behalf of a child into a junior pension, but only a parent or legal guardian can open the account.

Make a gift count

You can gift wealth you’ve accumulated over the years in several ways. Each year you can give away up to £3,000, which will not be subject to inheritance tax (IHT) when you die. You can also give £250 to any number of people each year, free from IHT. It’s also possible to make further tax-free gifts – known as ‘potentially exempt transfers’ – but you have to survive for seven years after making the

gift for your estate to get the full benefit.

However, it can be tricky knowing when and how to give money to your family alongside securing your own financial future. A financial adviser can help you to build a tailor-made plan that will ensure that you and your family have the financial security you need today and in the future.

n September 2019, we opened a second brand new food and nutrition room, alongside which a new and exciting KS3 course and curriculum has been introduced. This looks to develop the core skills and knowledge around the themes of a healthy diet, practical skills, food preparation and cooking skills, food safety and active lifestyles.

To support the new curriculum, the development of an e-cook book is well underway; this will feature 52 recipes that students will have made by the end of the key stage. The cook book has been specially written by Nottingham High School’s Head of Food and Nutrition to offer a range of exciting recipes that wil progressively develop pupil’s practical skills and teach the importance of nutritional food and ingredients. Each recipe comes with ingredients, method, nutritional information, suggestions for adaptions for dietary needs, and a section to offer further challenging activities for our students. The resource has proved popular and is being used by other schools.

The past 12 months have seen the whole school get a lot more involved in food and nutrition activities. Senior school students have the opportunity to participate in a range of fun, practical food-based activities weekly. The uptake of these clubs has been very popular, many of the activities include fundraising for local charities (for example, supporting local food banks and soup kitchens). For sixth form students, we offer a course where that challenges students to cook a range of healthy, nutritionally-balanced meals on a budget, in order to prepare them for living independently. We call this course Ready Steady University.

Ongoing development in the health and nutrition department has helped

us connect with the food industry and professional chefs. Former Student and Master Chef: The Professionals winner, Laurence Henry, often visits the school to host demonstrations and competitions. Our year eight students have also taken part in workshops with The Artisan School of Cookery.

Since 2019, we’ve seen the number of students opting to study Food and Nutrition at GCSE double, demonstrating the impact of the improved curriculum and activities.

In recent times, we’ve changed what we serve to our staff and students to encourage a healthier lifestyle. In the senior school servery, we have a main counter, offering a meat, fish or vegetarian meal, accompanied by

seasonal vegetables. We’ve recently replaced our pasta bar with a variety bar, where we offer a range of healthy options. The lite bite counter has now been replaced with the explore bar, which gives our chefs the opportunity to explore their culinary flair and provide their take on popular street food from all over the world. We also offer a salad bar every day, where staff and students can add a side salad to their meal. Rising Star of the Year BEDFORD SCHOOL Benjamin Ingram-Moore, grandson of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore went from lockdown GCSEs studying to leading the social media campaign on the biggest fundraising story of the year

enjie and his grandad had always had a strong bond, especially since Benjie’s grandmother passed away, which is when the captain moved into their family home.

It was during a family barbeque in March 2020, that the then 16-year-old Benjie, along with his mum, dad and sister, suggested to his grandfather Tom, aged 99, that he walk 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday, with the aim of raising £1,000 for the NHS. Benjie says, “We originally just wanted to do our bit to raise £1,000.”

Little did he know, the whole world was going to take notice of this feat. It became the biggest international feelgood story, and eventually saw Captain Tom, aided by his remarkable marketing skills, raise a phenomenal £33m.

The Captain Tom Twitter account, set up and managed by Benjie, quickly gained momentum, attracting a staggering 75,000 followers in the first week, rising to today’s total of 400,000.

This alone proved to be a significant part of the PR and marketing operation.

Benjie managed to secure a muchcoveted spot on The Michael Ball Show on BBC Radio 2 and gained the support of BBC Breakfast and Piers Morgan, who made Captain Tom a regular on the nation’s TV screens. Benjie also came up with the idea of asking celebrities to record video messages of support, receiving clips from the likes of Dame Kelly Holmes and Lord Sugar.

Aged just 16, he became the family’s press officer, liaising with local, national and international media outlets.

For Captain Sir Tom’s 100th birthday, the Great Hall at Bedford School, where Benjie is a pupil, was turned into a sorting office, with more than 100 volunteers from the school community opening every single birthday card and setting aside envelopes and separate gifts, cheques and donations. They then created a spectacular exhibition of 160,000 cards, which was visited by media from around the world.

Benjie was both humbled and

honoured to receive this award. In a whirlwind year, to receive such accolade was testament to all his hard work. His school, who supported Benjie and his grandfather on their special mission, are incredibly proud of Benjie and were over the moon to see him receive the recognition he was so deserved of.

Benjie explained, “I’ve been absolutely blown away by how life has changed over the past year.”
