This County Durham co-ed is renowned for its nurturing, cuttingedge environment, forest school and rich co-curricular programme

‘Barney’, as the school is affectionately known by staff and pupils, has recently undertaken major refurbishments across its state-of-the-art boarding houses, including Old Courts, its junior boarding house.

As part of its comprehensive calendar and co-curricular offering, Barnard Castle Prep School frequently hosts and visits regional schools for sporting fixtures, in addition to termly inter-house competitions. Set within Barney’s grounds, Forest School is one of the most popular elements of the prep’s enriching curriculum. From outdoor den building to roasting marshmallows on a camp fire, al fresco learning is fun!

‘Preppies’ receive two creative music lessons a week, as well as LAMDA training from the school’s excellent music and drama departments, alongside support from its diverse network of peripatetic teachers.

Old Courts has gone from strength to strength in recent years with the addition of new social spaces, complementing Barney’s popular co-curricular programmes. Junior boarders are able to take advantage of the school’s rural setting in their free time and benefit from regular weekend trips across the north of England.
