TIPS HAYLEY HENDERSON ONLINE MARKETING EXECUTIVE
Why Far East? “Fascinating culture, breathtaking sights and exploring ancient history are at the top of the list when planning a new adventure - and the Far East delivers new experiences in abundance. This region is made up of so many stunning places, from the idyllic islands of Halong Bay to the bustling markets of Ho Chi Minh. Visit historical wonders from the Terracotta Warriors to the awe-inspiring Great Wall of China. Ho Chi Minh epitomises the Far East with its combination of lively street markets. Cho Ben Thanh has been a popular street vendor since the 17th Century, selling delicious freshly prepared and cooked delicacies, traditional garments and fabrics as well as being within walking distance of the presidential palace and the spectacular Cathedral. You really can experience the serenity, the energy and pivotal moments in history all in one trip.
Far East
FOCUS ON:
TERRACOTTA WARRIORS The Ancient Army There are some sights that will stick with you for life, and the mysterious sight of over 7000 terracotta soldiers is certainly one of them. This eerie army is one of the most famous archaeological finds in the world, attracting around two million visitors each year. You’ll find this incredible historic site just a short flight away from Beijing, in the ancient capital of China - Xian. Although not close to a cruise port, you’ll often find our Far Eastern cruises featuring a spectacular land tour to the most historic and poignant wonders in the country, such as the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City and the Terracotta Warriors. The army itself guards the tomb of one of China’s ancient emperors, who lived over
2000 years ago. The warriors are nestled in the pits which they were uncovered in, when they were discovered by accident in 1974. There are archers, horses and chariots along with the soldiers, many of which have been restored. The perfectly sculpted life-size statues are in full armour and most impressively of all, all have distinctively different faces. The figures which are kneeling down even have the treads of their shoes modelled; this intricate detailing is one of the factors that makes them so unique. This is an incredible insight into ancient China.

Once you get there, the Far East is a cheap place to visit. The cost of living is much lower than in the UK, so while you’re off the ship exploring you can buy bottled water, sample the local cuisine, grab a beer and generally still have change left from a fiver. South America
FOCUS ON:
BUENOS AIRES The Sophisticated Capital
Argentina is a country studded with spectacular beauty. Exotic wildlife, the breathtaking Andes and the icy Patagonian icefield are all huge draws to travellers. But the jewel in the crown of this magnificent place is its buzzing colonial capital, Buenos Aires. Cultured, eclectic, and taking its cues from many European cities, this is a city bursting with personality. Often referred to as the ‘Paris of the South’, you’ll find the architecture magnificent and the people passionate. The city itself is made up of a network of fascinating communities; this is undeniably a thriving metropolis with a rugged edge. Weave through the historic downtown area, explore markets and colonial churches and delve into the rich history of the city. Then adjust to the rhythm of this diverse wonderland; head to the chic district of Palermo and discover elegant restaurants, glamourous bars and independent boutiques.
A vibrant arts and cultural scene is something Buenos Aires is renowned for. If you’re here for the day, you’ll be spoilt for choice by the avant-garde galleries, plentiful museums and French-style palaces. And if you’re there for a longer stay, fill your evening with a performance at one of the countless theatres or Colon Theater, one of the world’s greatest opera houses. During the evening you might even venture into a steamy Tango club something the spirited city is famed for. But, even if you feel like doing nothing at all, it’s a mesmerising place to simply drink in your surroundings. Wander the streets and soak up the vibrant atmosphere, or settle in a sidewalk café and watch the world go by. We proudly offer a wide range of South America cruises, many of which depart from or call at Buenos Aires. Arguably one of Latin America’s hottest destinations, this is a port that is not to be missed.
South America
adventure
An Iguassu Falls South America’s diverse and dramatic landscapes are so vast and spectacular they have to be seen to be believed. From vibrant cities to breathtaking natural wonders, the photos just don’t do them justice. So, earlier this year, we sent Suzi Pettitt and Vicky Connolly from our commercial team on a trip to see it with their own eyes. Here they recall their time at Iguassu Falls: “This was a trip of a lifetime - one to cross off our bucket lists. We were so excited and couldn’t wait to go and learn about South America and bring our knowledge and experiences back to the team.
falls. We took a bridge out over the water, getting absolutely drenched from the thunderous sprays. Next we took a panoramic glass elevator up to a platform for more phenomenal views.
After a cultural couple of days in Salvador at the beginning of our trip, we flew to Iguassu where we stayed for two nights. Iguassu Falls forms the border between Brazil and Argentina and consists of two sides – we stayed on the Brazilian side, but most visitors will enjoy the falls from both sides as it is so easy to take a tour to the other side. The Falls stretch for 1.7 miles and vary in height from 60m to 82m, making Iguassu taller than Niagara and twice as wide.
Later that afternoon, we were lucky enough to go on the Macuco Safari Boat Trip. After a mile safari ride through the park and a short hike down to the river we embarked the inflatable bi-motor boat. As we travelled up river, we passed the canyon and faced the rapids at a speed that allowed us to really appreciate the scenery around us, until we reached the horseshoe which is also known as the Devil’s Throat.
The Iguassu National Park is the most significant remaining rainforest in the Southern cone of South America and, along with its waterfalls, has been declared a National Heritage Site by UNESCO. We learnt that there are approximately 350 different species of birds, 75 different mammals, 76 different species of reptiles, 6000 different species of insects and 800 different butterflies in the National Park. After lunch, we took a descending walking trail of the canyon, where we were in awe of the power and presence of the Falls and enjoyed panoramic views of more than 240
It was then time for our shower. The driver navigated our boat through the spray of one of the falls, some of which spilt down from a height of approximately 20 metres. It was so much fun, we were all screaming with laughter, even though drenched, that we just had to buy a video of our trip to share our memories with friends and family at home. That evening, we had dinner at the 5* Bourbon Hotel to mark our last night in Iguassu. The following morning a direct flight took us to Rio de Janeiro, where the adventure continued.”

FOCUS ON:
THE BLUE MOUNTAINS A land of mist
A visit to Sydney isn’t complete without a trip out to the breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Blue Mountains. This unique mountainous region takes its name from the grey-coloured haze that hangs in a dense canopy over the landscape. A fine mist of oil, exuded by the dense population of Eucalyptus trees, combines with water vapour and dust particles in the air, creating the distinctive blue tinged fog the area is known for. A relatively short transfer away from Sydney, the foothills of these mountains begin around 50km west of the city. Many of our Australasia cruise packages are inclusive of a Blue Mountains tour, taking you from the heart of Sydney directly into the National Park. Travel along Cliff Drive, taking in incredible views along Megalong Valley on your way to Echo Point.
From this lookout point you’ll enjoy a view across to the Three Sisters, one of the sights the Blue Mountains’ most recognisable features. This sandstone formation is a trio of rocky pinnacles standing proud above the Jamison Valley. The tour includes an experience of traditional dance and didgeridoo performances, with informative talks about Australia’s Aboriginal culture and tribes. Learn more about this vast country’s intriguing heritage, while exploring some of its most beautiful sights. Take a bushwalk along the winding trails, leading you along mountainside paths, past cascading waterfalls and with views out over the lush landscapes below. Aboriginal carvings, canyons and cliffs are scattered throughout this fascinating region. Escape the city in summer for a refreshing break, or visit in spring or autumn for a burst of colour. At any time of year, this is a magical place to inhale the fresh mountain air.

TIPS NATALIE DRAPER MARKETING MANAGER
Why Abu Dhabi? “Glamourous, dazzling and sun-kissed, Abu Dhabi is a fabulous port of call. There is something for everyone to enjoy and all within easy reach of the cruise port. If you only have one day in Abu Dhabi I would recommend visiting Yas Island, home to the glamorous Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The track is not the only home to speed on the Island; visit Ferrari World where you can ride the world’s fastest roller coaster or take a splash in the world’s largest waterpark, Yas Waterworld. If you’re looking for a more relaxed day then why not take a leisurely stroll round the beautiful Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque or immerse yourself in the local culture and visit one of the colourful souks. Whatever you choose to do on your trip to Abu Dhabi you will come back with some special memories.”

FOCUS ON:
THE UAE
Sand dunes & skyscrapers Discover a land of fascinating contrasts. The UAE is made up of seven distinctly different Emirates, from the glitz of Dubai to the traditional old town of Saudi Arabia. As you cruise the Middle East, you’re most likely to call in at Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the two most liberal and lively cities. A unique city nestled in the heart of the Emirates, Dubai offers an extraordinary winter escape. With a crystal clear coastline overlooked by a spectacular skyline, and surrounded by the Arabian Desert, this is one of the most mesmerising places on earth. Marvel at the yachts in the glamourous marina, and admire futuristic architecture against the exotic sky. From adrenalinefuelled fun at the Aquaventure waterpark, to a mesmerising sand dune safari – Dubai blends the surreal with the sublime. Where
else would you find islands shaped like the continents of the world? Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE, and is slightly more understated than its glitzy neighbour. There are many Arabian traditions and customs to discover; one of the standout attractions of the city is one of the world’s largest and most extravagant places of worship, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This mighty structure is made up of many bright white domes, visible from miles away as you approach. The city is also famed for its exciting Formula One circuit, an array of ancient forts and spectacular sand dunes. Cruise around the Emirates and Oman on one of our world sector cruises, sampling the charm of ancient cities and modern meccas as you go.

TIPS JON PAUL ROSS COMMERCIAL EXECUTIVE
Why Rocky Mountaineer? “My journey through Western Canada was the trip of a lifetime. I never believed that such natural beauty could exist. Travelling through the Canadian Rockies I found myself completely in awe of the natural beauty, majesty and might of this natural phenomenon. I was treated to sightings of Wolves, Black Bear, Elk and Bighorn sheep all roaming in their natural habitats. The highlight of my adventure was my trip on the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train. We travelled in ultimate style and luxury in GoldLeaf service, where the views through the glass dome windows were unlike anything I had ever experienced. The gourmet cuisine, prepared by chefs from fresh local ingredients, was all part and parcel of this terrific once in a lifetime experience. I thoroughly recommend this trip to anyone who hasn’t travelled to this area of the world before, who enjoys breathtaking natural beauty and scenery.“

FOCUS ON:
BANFF
Gateway to the Rockies Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Banff is a mountain-lovers dream. Discover a quaint Canadian community in the spectacular surroundings of Banff and Lake Louise National Park. As the most famous park in the Rockies and Canada’s leading tourist attraction, this is the ideal base from which to explore the surrounding natural beauty. On many of our Alaska cruises, you’ll have the chance to ride the legendary Rocky Mountaineer train through the dramatic landscape, often stopping for a hotel stay in Banff along the route. With a great choice of accommodation, restaurants, shops and activities in the historic town, there’s plenty to keep you amused during your stay. With a rich history preserved through museums and heritage sites, you can discover how Banff became the thriving base for mountain exploration that it is today. Today, approximately 8300 people
reside in Banff and it is well-equipped to entertain the plentiful tourists that stop by. With 1600km of trails, two gondolas and three ski areas, this is no less than an alpine playground. A real highlight is bathing in the Hot Springs on the edge of the town, looking out onto the snow-topped mountains. The town itself is in close proximity to the unspoilt wilderness of the National Park. Picture towering peaks and icy blue glacierfed lakes. You might even be lucky enough to catch sight of a herd of Elk or a Grizzly Bear out in the wild. Your cross-country tour will often include a ride on the Banff Gondola. This attraction climbs you to the peak of Sulphur Mountain in ten minutes, where you’ll be treated to spectacular views over the incredible landscape.

SAN FRANCISCO The Golden Gate and beyond
Sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge should be on all cruisers’ bucket lists. The thrill of seeing this iconic structure from the unique perspective of a cruise ship is one of the ultimate world travel experiences. But the true beauty of sailing into this port extends so much further; a treasure-trove of sights awaits you in the city itself. This foggy Californian mecca is known as one of the most progressive cities in the USA, bringing a laid-back charm along with its A-List of attractions. Fisherman’s Wharf is a great place to experience it: waterfront marketplaces, the smells of freshly cooked seafood, sea lions basking in the sunshine on the decking. This is the place to eat, drink, shop and relax. To top it all off, you’ll enjoy incredible views of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and the city skyline from here; the perfect way to spend an afternoon.
After the bridge is ticked off your list, Alcatraz is the next must-see attraction. This mystifying prison housed some of the world’s most notorious convicts, including Al Capone. Take a ferry ride across the bay to ‘The Rock’ and take a tour to learn the stories of this mystifying prison. Your trip won’t be complete without riding the steep, undulating streets on the 130 year old tram system. This cable car system is a national landmark, with cables embedded in the streets to pull the trams along. Hop on and experience the romantic adventure of riding this historical transport route. This month we’re featuring an exceptional itinerary with a two night hotel stay in San Francisco, before embarking on a round trip to the idyllic Hawaiian Islands (See p.44). Prepare to be amazed by this fabulous, hilly city.

The tall ship
experience
Starclippers combine the atmosphere and charm of traditional sailing with the luxury of modern cruising. Experience a cruise experience like no other, a true adventure on the waves. Whether it’s the food, the destinations or facilities that got you hooked on cruising, there’s no denying the importance of the ship. It is for some the most important factor when booking, and what really sets Starclippers apart is their uniquely elegant tall ship cruises. Forget what you knew about cruising: this is more romantic, more traditional and a true sailing experience. A laidback and intimate atmosphere greets you aboard. On smaller ships you’ll feel a part of the family as you get to know like-minded shipmates and receive a personalised service from a crew who truly care: gracious and attentive, yet never intrusive. The fleet is characterised by the striking beauty of traditional style clippers. The three beautiful ships, Star Clipper, Star Flyer and Royal Clipper have four or five masts each, making a lasting impression on anyone who sees them. Conjuring up nostalgia for a time when ships like these ruled the waves, you’ll discover
a new passion for life at sea with the wind in your hair. You can even get involved with the sailing of the ship if you choose, climbing to the Crow’s Nest and pulling the ropes.
your destinations. At certain ports, local performers may come aboard and provide entertainment for the evening, immersing you in the local culture and traditions.
In contrast to the historical feel of the ships, the facilities on board are as modern and stylish as ever. You can expect an en-suite with television, DVD player, hair-dryer and a safe. Some cabins also have their own private veranda or open straight onto the deck.
Dine on gourmet cuisine with no set dining times or dress codes. Passionate and professional chefs offer delights from across the globe, including dishes inspired by the places you visit. If you’re calling at one of the Caribbean islands that day, you may find that your lunch is served on the beach fresh from the barbeque.
Each ship has multiple swimming pools, a library, and bar areas to relax and enjoy the delicious cuisine that is served daily. Royal Clipper even has an observation lounge in which you can enjoy the passing scenery from the comfort of your chair. Restricted schedules don’t exist on a Starclippers voyage; spend your days and nights how you wish. But don’t miss out on the captain’s daily briefing, where you will hear anecdotes and interesting facts about

TIPS SALLY GRIMES DIGITAL MARKETING EXECUTIVE
Why The Mediterranean? “Venice is somewhere that doesn’t quite seem real. This is a place where roads are replaced with canals, you take a gondola instead of a taxi and the only thing more enticing than the aroma of freshly baked pizza, is the incredible architecture. At every turn you are presented with a new surprise and drawn to something else this magnificent place has to offer. Grand palaces and ancient buildings dominate the narrow streets, lined with luxurious shops and quaint cafés, making it the most intriguing city to wonder around. As a city on water, it makes sense that Venice is best experienced on a cruise. Not only because you dock so close to everything, but because the passage in and out of this breathtaking city is by far the most impressive of any cruise port.”

TIPS MARGARET MCCORRISTON RIVER CRUISE PRODUCT MANAGER
Why River Cruise? “We have listened to our loyal customers and are excited to announce that we will be adding River Cruises to our already extensive cruise portfolio. Due to the small number of cabins on each ship, it’s advisable to book 9-12 months ahead of departure to avoid disappointment. Most first time cruisers choose to sail a seven night cruise on the scenic Rhine from Switzerland to Amsterdam: a truly breathtaking cruise at any time of the year. Expect to visit Holland, Germany, France and Switzerland with the star attraction being your sailing time through the Rhine Gorge, the most scenic section of the river, with miles of castles, churches and vineyards to be enjoyed from the top deck. For the more adventurous, why not sail Asia’s Mighty Mekong, Yangtze or the Irrawaddy in Burma, discovering cultures that have remained unchanged for centuries. Many river cruises in Asia include land tours featuring famous landmarks like The Great Wall of China, Terracotta Warriors and the magnificent golden Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. Our helpful, knowledgeable and courteous staffs are on hand to help you find your perfect river cruise.”

FOCUS ON:
RIVER CRUISING Discover a new way to cruise
River cruising has come a long way since the early traditional barge style cruises. Some of the industry’s most exciting innovations are now represented aboard the new sleek and contemporary River vessels. You can expect swimming pools that turn into cinemas, twin balconies and six star boutique-style accommodations. This is an intimate and relaxing way to view some of the world’s most beautiful cities that can only be accessed by a smaller vessel. Just get on board, unpack and enjoy the scenery as you float on the calmest of waters; with no tidal current, there is no need to worry about motion sickness. Many river cruise lines are all-inclusive, covering all meals, excursions, flights, transfers and drinks with dinner. Some luxury operators even boast that you can leave your wallet at home as everything is taken care of, by your butler no less.
Discover the rivers of Europe such as the Danube, Seine and the Dutch Waterways. They flow through some of most beautiful and spectacular scenery. Choose the Dutch Bulb fields in springtime - a perfect time to visit Keurkenhof Gardens with its magical displays of Tulips. Or sail the romantic Danube in summertime; treat yourself and take an excursion to Neuschwantstein, the castle built for King Ludwig II that inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Enjoy the fact that your River boat will be docked in the heart of the city, allowing you to either join an escorted excursion or be totally independent and explore the city by yourself. Without lengthy transfers, you can spend longer in port and discover more.
