STOCKHOLM Check into Castille Paris for a truly romantic minimoon
Paris
SEE: With a long-standing reputation as the most romantic city in the world, can there be anywhere better to go for a post-wedding weekend break than Paris? There’s no shortage of spots to explore – the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe being just a couple – but you’ll hit the crowds. Purchase an advance ticket online to skip the queues at the Louvre and try lesserknown museums such as the Musée de l’Orangerie and Musée Rodin, too. You’ll also never be short of places to eat. There are bistros and restaurants to spare in Paris, and most offer outdoor seating. The gorgeous La Maison de Verlaine in the Latin Quarter is also worth a visit, especially if you’re feeling brave enough to try the garlic-butter-stuffed snails… STAY: Castille Paris. Treat yourself to the sumptuous charm of this five-star property. Neighbour to the legendary Maison Chanel, it also sits just a few minutes’ walk from the impressive Place de la Concorde. From £170 per night; starhotels.com
SEE: Don’t be fooled by the modern architecture, smooth transport links and huge selection of fashionable shops – it’s history that sits at the core of Sweden’s compact capital. Whether it’s in Stockholm’s medieval Old Town, Gamla Stan, which is lined with quaint townhouses and candlelit cellar bars, or Drottningholm Palace, the permanent residence of the royal family, the city’s early origins are clearly visible to anyone who visits. Stortorget, the most historic square in the city, is the best spot for Insta-worthy snaps, particularly if you’re there to explore the Christmas markets. Look out for Chokladkoppen, too – a small, yellow-coloured café that sells creamy hot chocolate and

SEE: Prolong that newlywed glow in the city that never sleeps. With all that Manhattan has to offer, it can be easy to forget the other districts that complete New York City: explore beyond Brooklyn Bridge to discover that borough’s secret gems, and if waterside views are your thing, the Staten Island Ferry is the perfect way to take in the sights along the Hudson. Other must-dos include Bubby’s in Lower Manhattan for pancakes and pie; drinks at Prohibition-era cocktail bar Please Don’t Tell; and browsing the Brooklyn night bazaar. And, in a city packed with museums, the Museum of Ice Cream is the one hidden from the tourist trail. Could there be a better way to spend an afternoon than sampling a giant sundae? We think not. STAY: Ultra-cool and playful, The Moxy is located right beside Times Square and each bijou room is perfect for a city stay. A stone’s throw from Penn Station, it’s also the perfect location from which to explore every part of New York, but if you fancy a night closer to home, its rooftop bar is a must-see, with priority booking for hotel guests (we recommend the Thursday night). Start with the Basilica di San destination of the A-list Clemente, one of the capital’s lesserknown tourist spots, then head to the equally fascinating 2,000-year-old Pantheon, which is made up from monumental granite Corinthian columns, coloured marble and bronze doors. If you’re keen to visit the Colosseum and the Sistine Chapel, do so early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid busy periods. Alternatively, purchase a Roma Pass to gain admission to two landmarks of your choice without having to queue, and unlimited use of the city’s public transport network. Hit the Via del Corso or the Porta Portese flea market in Trastevere on Sundays for a dose of retail therapy. And when it’s time to eat, if it’s not a scoop of gelato from Giolitti – a favourite of the locals – then make it a paper-thin pizza at Cesare al Casaletto. STAY: Hotel D’Inghilterra Roma. T
he 16 main islands of the archipelago that make up The Bahamas offer a wide range of honeymoon experiences to suit all tastes and budgets. With year-round sunshine, direct flights four times a week from London Heathrow and so much to explore, there isn’t a box this tropical destination doesn’t tick. It’s easy to take in two or more islands in one visit, allowing for three or more nights on each to soak up the different atmospheres. Touch down in Nassau to experience the luxury of mega resorts such as Atlantis Paradise Island with its five hotels, the world’s largest manmade lagoon and marine habitat, and the Aquaventure waterpark. The new Baha Mar, set on the magnificent white sands of Cable Beach, offers three hotels, SLS, Grand Hyatt and The swimming pigs aren’t the only wildlife you’ll encounter here

The Rosewood, as well as the all-inclusive Meliá Nassau Beach Resort. Take in the bustle of the vibrant capital and all the culture, nightlife and shopping it has to offer, before flying or sailing to one of the Out Islands when you fancy a slower pace. Capture a honeymoon selfie with the swimming pigs of The Exumas, the first paddling porkers to hit the headlines. And if you’re both nature-lovers, then pigs are by no means the only creatures that’ll make it into your holiday snaps, with an abundance of dolphins, sea lions, rays, and wild iguanas to catch on film – stay at Sandals Emerald Bay Golf, Tennis & Spa Resort, set right on the curve of the whitesand beach, to see it first hand. And if you head to the southernmost islands of Inagua and Mayaguana, huge flocks of West Indian flamingos dominate the horizon. Food is a huge part of Bahamian culture, and visitors can indulge in a range of dining experiences. Take afternoon tea at
Government House, complete with musicians, or dine at home with a Bahamian couple through the People to People programme. The islands’ multicultural background allows for a variety of cuisines, from every island’s Fish Fry serving grouper with rice and peas, and the local staple, conch – served in spicy salads and chowder. When you’re not wining, dining or relaxing, explore the Straw Market for crafts, play 18 holes on the world-class golf courses, or snorkel, dive and fish in the crystal-clear waters. Honeymoon inspo for couples who love their food as much as they love each other
SAN FRANCISCO, UNITED STATES
EAT: You’re bound to work up an appetite when you stay in San Francisco; this is a city that’s packed with places to eat – from European eateries and family-run Asian restaurants to classic American diners. For brunch, one of the best spots has to be Dottie’s True Blue Café, where the homemade cinnamon pecan rolls always have tourists coming back for more. French-inspired Zazie, where you’ll have the chance to try San Francisco’s famous delicacy, Dungeness crab, is also popular. Those with a sweet tooth will go crazy for the apple fritters at Bob’s Donut & Pastry Shop, a 24-hour old-school bakery. Or if it’s cheesecake you’re craving, the offerings at Zanze’s Cheesecake are said to be the best in the city. On a budget? One of
BURGUNDY, FRANCE
EAT: Most of what’s considered to be classic French cuisine comes from Burgundy, including escargots and oeufs meurette (poached eggs in red wine). Dishes here are rich, hearty and packed with flavour, and they take their wine pretty seriously, too. However, the area is best known for its cattle – the Charolais, a creamy-coloured cow – which is considered one of the finest in the world. So if you’re a carnivore, the beef dishes are not to be missed. One of the most sublime spots for the region’s famous boeuf bourguignon is Caves Madeleine in the town of Beaune, where a stew of succulent Charolais cheek, mushrooms, bacon and chives is left to simmer for five to seven hours each day. If it’s cheese that gets your tummy rumbling, Burgundy’s offerings are simply mouthwatering. Look out for Chaource and Époisses de Bourgogne, both of which are soft, creamy and wonderfully pungent. There’s also a wealth of fromageries in the area offering tours – check out Gaugry
Fromager in Brochon, where you’ll get to taste up to five delicious varieties. STAY: With a Michelin-starred restaurant and more than 8,000 bottles of wine in its cellar, it’s little wonder foodies flock to Hostellerie de Levernois. The 18th-century estate has 26 rooms and suites spread across three buildings and is just 10 minutes from Beaune. Rooms from £234 per night; levernois.com
the best cheap eats is family-run restaurant Burma Superstar, where the specialities are samosa soup, rainbow salads and coconut chicken curry with floury noodles. STAY: Based in San Fran’s financial district, The Battery boasts gorgeous interiors, speakeasy-style bars, a state-of-the-art fitness centre and spa. Dine at chef Nicolai’s Lipscomb’s three-Michelin-starred Arzak and you’ll definitely be in for a treat. Rooms from £425 per night; thebatterysf.com
Food TOKYO, JAPAN
The Peninsula Hotel is about as ’gram goals as five-star hotels get. The design for the 24-storey skyscraper is inspired by a Japanese lantern, boasting panoramic views, bamboo-woven ceilings and stunning marble walkways. Inside, you’ll find 314 modern bedrooms, a luxury spa and five restaurants – the best of which is located on the top floor. Rooms from £378 per night; peninsula.com/tokyo
EMILIA-ROMAGNA, ITALY
EAT: Home to some of the world’s best cheesemakers, wineries and pork farms, what many consider to be classic Italian food is actually made in Emilia-Romagna. In fact, this often overlooked north-central region is where some of the country’s bestloved delicacies are produced, including Parmigiano-Reggiano, balsamic vinegar, mortadella and Parma ham. Romagna is the place for cheeses, but 20
weddingideasmag.com
for cold cuts, try Sorella Picchi in Parma, which produces some of Italy’s best coppa, salami and prosciutto. And for the quality of the ingredients, you’ll more than get your money’s worth, too – a pizza can cost as little as €6, while a full meal with a bottle of wine for two people won’t go far above €50. Another foodie favourite is Trattoria da Amerigo, a restaurant in the small village of Savigno, which is famed for its incredible gnocchi with locally-grown truffles. The top spot to look out for, however, is Massimo Bottura’s hugely popular Michelin-starred eatery Osteria Francescana in Modena, which serves up the crème-de-la-crème of Italian cuisine; just make sure you book your table a few months in advance. STAY: We love the sheer opulence of Bologna’s Grand Hotel Majestic già Baglioni. Situated in front of the city’s cathedral, this gorgeous 18th-century building is filled with classic Venetianstyle furnishings and characterful décor. If you’re dining in, check out the hotel’s Michelin-starred I Carracci restaurant, whose chef Claudio Sourdi, is famed for his inventive takes on traditional Bolognese dishes. Rooms from £223 per night; grandhotelmajestic.duetorrihotels.com

EAT: Tokyo dining really is something else. There are well over 100,000 restaurants in this vibrant capital (more Michelin-starred eateries than Paris, in fact), which means that while eating out can come with a hefty price tag, there are more than enough options to suit all budgets. Sushi is the irrefutable star of the Japanese kitchen, and family-run Kyubey in Ginza serves up some of the best. Grab a spot at the main counter, where the chefs will happily chat as they prepare your dishes. And if you’re feeling adventurous, try the ‘omakase’ option: a selection of dishes specially chosen by the chef. Ramen is another delicacy not to be missed, so make sure you check out Tsuta in the Toshima district. Since becoming the first ramen restaurant to earn a Michelin star, queues are lengthy, but for the cost and the flavour, it’s completely worth it. Other classic dishes to look out for include yakitori, tempura, gyoza, monja, okonomiyaki, and of course, Japan’s signature Kobe-style beef – the best of which you’ll find in Kobe Beef Kaiseki 511, a top dining spot in the Akasaka district. STAY: Set within the Chiyoda district,

ith great weather, idyllic settings and, on average, a much smaller bill than weddings in the UK, it’s little wonder more and more couples are choosing to tie the knot further afield. But, naturally, it does take more planning and commitment for all of you than compiling last-minute invites and a quick dash down the M1. Your first port of call? Choosing the right destination. Compare the cost of different resorts, venues and hotels just as you would if you were getting married closer to home. Use
weather forecasts and average recorded temperatures to check whether your idyllic escape will be just as perfect when you’re due to say your vows – whether you’ve got your heart set on a snowy white wedding or glorious, unabated sunshine.
THE BEST LAID PLANS Timing is everything. As soon as you’ve set the date, send out your save-the-dates. Early notice means guests can book early-bird flights and accommodation, not to mention time off work if needed. Do some research for them and include accommodation, flight and transfer options in their invitations – and don’t forget to let them know if they will need visas or vaccinations. Also check how long you’ll need to be in the country for – some destinations require a certain length of residency before you can marry there. Then, as the RSVPs start to roll in, up the excitement

HELPING HANDS By now, you should be in regular contact with a wedding planner either based at your venue or local to your destination. Make the most of their experience, expertise and relationships with local suppliers to ensure planning is a breeze. You’ll also likely find that your celebration feels more authentic as a result. weddingideasmag.com

PAPERWORK AND PACKING Again, your coordinator should be able to assist with this, but always follow up with the legal documents required, pack them safely in your hand luggage and make sure you have spare copies to hand. And speaking of packing – book any extra suitcases in advance to avoid hefty airport charges on the day you leave. Remember, you’ll need space for any wedding gifts you might receive, plus any decorations or

BLOWN-BUDGET ALERT Don’t forget to prepare yourself for any hidden charges once you get there – especially if you’re not entering into a wedding package option. Pricey celebrants, notice fees, unexpectedly having to help out family members with travel costs and even taking the time to visit your venue two or three times over the course of your planning, can all add up.

THE WORLD Rojeanne & Andrew
After falling in love all over again, these South African soulmates decided to marry in the country where it first began PHOTOGRAPHY: LINDIE MEYER (LINDIEMEYER.CO.ZA)
R
ojeanne and Andrew were each other’s first loves, meeting at the age of 19 before going their separate ways three years later. “Andrew came to the UK, got married and had children, while I stayed in South Africa and had two children. It wasn’t until years later – when we were both going through divorces – that we started dating again, travelling back and forth between South Africa and the UK. Now we’re married and living the dream in Bristol! Our fairytale came true,” laughs Rojeanne. The couple’s wedding took them back to South Africa, with an intimate weekend affair at the Manor House at Mont Rochelle, Franschhoek, a boutique hotel and vineyard. After the couple’s religious ceremony, which included a ribbon-tying ritual, guests enjoyed drinks, canapés and garden games in the grounds to the soulful backdrop of acoustic guitarist Francois Haasbroek, before sitting down to a five-course sharing feast. “The space was kept classic and romantic, with a rosepink, grey and cream colour palette and vintage touches,” recalls the bride. “Our local wedding planner sourced everything from the flowers to the stationery. We picked roses and peonies for the bouquets and centrepieces, and our two-tier cake comprised vanilla and chocolate layers with buttercream icing, which guests enjoyed with weddingideasmag.com

macarons for dessert.” The pared-back details showed off the beauty of Mont Rochelle’s interiors perfectly. Watercolour menus sat prettily on the tables, and a printed tree canvas for guests to press their fingerprints on added a personal touch. After a relaxed dinner and all the speeches, the couple and their guests partied in the privacy of the house until the early hours. Rojeanne looked every inch the stunning bride in her bespoke, blush-coloured Charlotte Francina gown. “I wanted something slightly vintage-looking,” she recalls. “The design originated as a satin pencil dress with a lace bodice, but for our ceremony I wore a floor-length organza skirt over the top. Later on, I took the skirt off to expose a sexier second dress!” Andrew, meanwhile, and the couple’s children, who all played a part in the day, complemented the colour scheme in navy blue outfits. 44

Top tip “Work with an event planner who’s local to where you’re getting married. They take the stress away and come up with great ideas. Our planner had amazing energy – she was an inspiration!”
“I’ll never forget the emotion on Andrew’s face when he saw me for that first time,” Rojeanne adds. “The whole day was filled with so much love and I was excited that it was finally happening. I was marrying my first love – my soulmate – and spending this magnificent celebration with our five children.” After the big day, the newlyweds took off for a few days to the town of Hermanus on the Western Cape, before travelling back to South Africa from the UK four months later for a longer honeymoon.

The art of packing Don’t pack light, pack smart, says resortwear label founder Juliet Dunn
For beach breaks, it’s all about finding versatile pieces that will take you from the lounger to the taverna
I tend to split things into beach, daytime and evening. More casual pieces can go at the bottom, with eveningwear being placed on top so they don’t get too squashed. I also like to take a hat with me – but hate wearing it on the plane! Pop it in the bottom of your suitcase with your shoes and pack tightly with socks and swimwear in and around it so it doesn’t lose its shape.

CONSIDER YOUR ACCESSORIES
MIX AND MATCH YOUR SWIMWEAR
I highly recommend planning each outfit before you pack so you don’t panic and overdo it! When it comes to footwear, pack a pair of shoes that are neutral and flat, with one pair of heels for the evening. I don’t like to take expensive pieces of jewellery in case they get lost, sandy or damp– but I do take playful pieces, such as ribbon bracelets and shell necklaces to accessorise with.
You don’t need to take a swimsuit for every day of the week. Take several separate pieces which you can mix and match or rotate so that you’re wearing something different most days. If you’ll be poolside for a week or two, it’s nice to have a change. The trend at the moment is for onepiece swimsuits – look out for new super-chic designs featuring details such as low backs, side cut-outs and sheer panelling.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Don’t limit your resortwear to a kaftan – there are jumpsuits and trousers around which will take you from day to night. It’s all about having that perfect outfit that you can wear both by the pool and to the beach bar. That said, I do love a kaftan. When I’ve found a style that suits me, I tend to buy it in a couple of different colours! Visit julietdunn.com
