With all that Manhattan has to offer, it can be easy to forget the other districts that complete New York City: explore beyond Brooklyn Bridge to discover that borough’s secret gems, and if waterside views are your thing, the Staten Island Ferry is the perfect way to take in the sights along the Hudson.

Other must-dos include Bubby’s in Lower Manhattan for pancakes and pie; drinks at Prohibition-era cocktail bar Please Don’t Tell; and browsing the Brooklyn night bazaar. However, the area is best known for its cattle – the Charolais, a creamy-coloured cow – which is considered one of the finest in the world. So if you’re a carnivore, the beef dishes are not to be missed. Another foodie favourite is Trattoria da Amerigo, a restaurant in the small village of Savigno, which is famed for its incredible gnocchi with locally-grown truffles. EAT: Tokyo dining really is something else.

There are well over 100,000 restaurants in this vibrant capital (more Michelin-starred eateries than Paris, in fact), which means that while eating out can come with a hefty price tag, there are more than enough options to suit all budgets.

ojeanne and Andrew were each other’s first loves, meeting at the age of 19 before going their separate ways three years later. “Andrew came to the UK, got married and had children, while I stayed in South Africa and had two children. It wasn’t until years later – when we were both going through divorces – that we started dating again, travelling back and forth between South Africa and the UK. Now we’re married and living the dream in Bristol! Our fairytale came true,” laughs Rojeanne.

The couple’s wedding took them back to South Africa, with an intimate weekend affair at the Manor House at Mont Rochelle, Franschhoek, a boutique hotel and vineyard. After the couple’s religious ceremony, which included a ribbon-tying ritual, guests enjoyed drinks, canapés and garden games in the grounds to the soulful backdrop of acoustic guitarist Francois Haasbroek, before sitting down to a five-course sharing feast.

“The space was kept classic and romantic, with a rosepink, grey and cream colour palette and vintage touches,” recalls the bride. “Our local wedding planner sourced everything from the flowers to the stationery. We picked roses and peonies for the bouquets and centrepieces, and our two-tier cake comprised vanilla and chocolate layers with buttercream icing, which guests enjoyed with  weddingideasmag.com

The pared-back details showed off the beauty of Mont Rochelle’s interiors perfectly. Watercolour menus sat prettily on the tables, and a printed tree canvas for guests to press their fingerprints on added a personal touch. After a relaxed dinner and all the speeches, the couple and their guests partied in the privacy of the house until the early hours.

Rojeanne looked every inch the stunning bride in her bespoke, blush-coloured Charlotte Francina gown. “I wanted something slightly vintage-looking,” she recalls. “The design originated as a satin pencil dress with a lace bodice, but for our ceremony I wore a floor-length organza skirt over the top. Later on, I took the skirt off to expose a sexier second dress!”

Andrew, meanwhile, and the couple’s children, who all played a part in the day, complemented the colour scheme in navy blue outfits.

“I’ll never forget the emotion on Andrew’s face when he saw me for that first time,” Rojeanne adds. “The whole day was filled with so much love and I was excited that it was finally happening. I was marrying my first love – my soulmate – and spending this magnificent celebration with our five children.”

After the big day, the newlyweds took off for a few days to the town of Hermanus on the Western Cape, before travelling back to South Africa from the UK four months later for a longer honeymoon.

For beach breaks, it’s all about finding versatile pieces that will take you from the lounger to the taverna

I tend to split things into beach, daytime and evening. More casual pieces can go at the bottom, with eveningwear being placed on top so they don’t get too squashed. I also like to take a hat with me – but hate wearing it on the plane! Pop it in the bottom of your suitcase with your shoes and pack tightly with socks and swimwear in and around it so it doesn’t lose its shape.

MIX AND MATCH YOUR SWIMWEAR

I highly recommend planning each outfit before you pack so you don’t panic and overdo it! When it comes to footwear, pack a pair of shoes that are neutral and flat, with one pair of heels for the evening. I don’t like to take expensive pieces of jewellery in case they get lost, sandy or damp– but I do take playful pieces, such as ribbon bracelets and shell necklaces to accessorise with.

You don’t need to take a swimsuit for every day of the week. Take several separate pieces which you can mix and match or rotate so that you’re wearing something different most days. If you’ll be poolside for a week or two, it’s nice to have a change. The trend at the moment is for onepiece swimsuits – look out for new super-chic designs featuring details such as low backs, side cut-outs and sheer panelling.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Don’t limit your resortwear to a kaftan – there are jumpsuits and trousers around which will take you from day to night. It’s all about having that perfect outfit that you can wear both by the pool and to the beach bar. That said, I do love a kaftan. When I’ve found a style that suits me, I tend to buy it in a couple of different colours!
