F

or most people, a conservatory is a beautiful extension of their indoor living space. Sun-filled, light and airy, it soon becomes a much-loved place for entertaining, or a relaxing spot to sit and unwind. For gardeners, a conservatory is all of these things but with an important addition: it’s a new opportunity to grow plants. Because it is part of the home, a conservatory is unlikely to be affected by frost, so there is huge potential for growing tender plants, with none of the fuss that goes with keeping a greenhouse frost-free. A light, warm space to fill with beautiful foliage and exotic specimens, a conservatory with a well-staged display of plants is the perfect transition between home and garden.

Traditionally separated from the main house by a door, the classic glass conservatory is a popular solution for those seeking a quiet retreat, or gardeners requiring climate control. Current thinking, however, tends to favour a more integrated approach, and while flexible, open-plan spaces are ideal for creating today’s multi-purpose conservatories, plant choice is more likely to be dictated by the degree of integration.

Whatever your choice, conservatories create a unique link to the garden and, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, can add at least five per cent to the value of your home. So it makes sense to buy the best you can afford. It is also wise to look to established companies that offer management of all aspects of the design and build, including planning permission.

In terms of build times, structures that are separated from the house are less disruptive and quicker to construct; open-plan additions often require the removal of external supporting walls, extending the duration and complexity of the build.

But the key to success is a design that is sensitive to the existing property. Think carefully about scale, materials and proportion to ensure it remains in keeping with both house and garden. A diversity of shape, detail and dimension means archetypal Victorian designs remain a popular choice thanks to their compatibility with most property styles. For larger homes, a Georgian-style orangery, with grand brick or stone piers and lanterns, can be a good fit. There are also pared-back glazed and timber versions, and rectangular Edwardian styles.

The lean-to complements most architectural styles, and is perfect for smaller properties.

However, while such conventional designs do tend to be the easiest way to stay within planning requirements, never feel you must follow tradition – take inspiration from the architecture of your home and consider that planners may be receptive to contemporary frameless additions, especially on listed buildings where a distinct separation between old and new can work well and is often preferable.

G

ardeners have been manipulating nature by growing plants under glass for centuries, but owning a glasshouse was once the preserve of the wealthy few. Think of Louis XIV and his Versailles orangery, constructed in the 17th century when glass production techniques and design underwent huge advances.

By the start of the Victorian era, production was in full swing and some of the grandest glasshouses were being built – Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace and Kew’s soaring conservatories. Yet, until the mid19th century, they were still strictly for the richest landowners, and built to demonstrate power and wealth. Prohibitively expensive window and glass taxes continued to make greenhouses an impossible dream, other than in the grand gardens of major estates. Eventually, the manufacturing innovations of the Industrial Revolution, coupled with the repeal of the glass tax, brought greatly reduced costs, and glasshouses became far more commonplace.

Now, of course, so long as there is room to site one properly, any gardener can own a glasshouse, even those on a modest budget. Yet even though they are readily available, the excitement a brandnew greenhouse provokes – particularly if it is a gardener’s first – is incomparable.

Sunlight, trapped by the glass, warms the inside of the greenhouse to extend the season and widen the range of plants that can be grown.

Think of a summer greenhouse and the scent of tomatoes usually springs to mind, but that’s just the beginning: tender crops from aubergines and cucumbers to chillies and sweet potatoes are possible under glass. And with their delicate early blossom protected under cover, peaches and apricots yield heavily under glass, while displays of ornamentals can provide colour year-round.

Greenhouses are a vital part of the gardener’s armoury in the battle to beat frost. These days, in all but the coldest parts of the UK, winters can be so mild that a greenhouse needn’t be heated to overwinter tender plants successfully, as long as they are kept dry at the roots. So it’s no wonder that greenhouses are such a desirable garden feature.

The most important consideration when buying a new greenhouse is to calculate the exact amount of space required, and to buy as large a size as possible because it will soon be filled. Then position the building with the roof ridge running east to west for the maximum amount of light all year round.

Take care to include good ventilation, ideally from roof vents and side windows, to facilitate air flow on hot days. Installing an electricity supply will pay off in colder months, when a light can extend the time spent working outdoors. In colder areas, a heater will raise the temperature for young seedlings, ensuring a good head start on the growing year.

SOLID FOUNDATIONS Once built to reduce costs, today a dwarf wall is worth considering if budget allows. The bricks retain warmth effectively, helping to moderate temperatures inside the greenhouse.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION All greenhouses need a level, solid base, but needn’t be freestanding. A lean-to or three-quarter span, such as the Edwardian from White Cottage (above), work well if space is tight.

he quintessential summerhouse has long been an integral part of English garden design, with its use as a space for entertaining dating back to the 15th century. Robert Adam took care to include a summerhouse in Osterley Park, in 1780, its classical structure speaking to the design of the main house. The Women’s Institute held their first meeting in one, and George Bernard Shaw and Virginia Woolf did much of their writing from their own garden summerhouses.

Traditionally, these were structures built solely for enjoyment and use during the summer months, for what could be lovelier than to while away a long evening in the comfort of your own garden? These days the humble summerhouse is often elevated to a functioning year-round room, but, for many, classic summerhouse styling is still the picturesque structures of the Victorian era – the National Trust garden at Hidcote sports a fine example.

Timber remains the most enduring construction material, and will always sit well within the garden, whether it is left to silver to a soft patina, for a natural aesthetic, or painted in heritage shades to conjure up a country-cottage look. Lightweight construction allows for innovation, as demonstrated by the revolving cabin at Shaw’s Corner in Hertfordshire. Alternatively, stone or brick follies and stand-alone glazed structures can also prove charmingly idiosyncratic additions to your garden – and those looking for something on a grander scale may wish to take a look at Capability Brown’s Gothic summerhouse at Burghley for inspiration.

In terms of costs, a simple shiplap timber DIY kit may set you back just a few hundred pounds, but it will prove suitable only for limited summer use. More robust, prefabricated, insulated kits start at around £3,000, while bespoke turnkey designs cost from £8,000, depending on size and function.

Whatever your choice, though, it is wise to give some thought to the overall garden design at the same time as choosing any building, since the best structures are those that are properly integrated into the wider landscaping scheme. And while consideration of usage will inevitably influence size and shape, be mindful of designs that could dominate the garden or host property. Address issues of scale by adhering to the proportion and style of surrounding areas, and also consider whether the building is to be a key design feature in the garden or a discreet addition.

Planning consent is another matter for careful consideration, with total height, proximity to boundary walls and the main house, and the total footprint of the structure all determining whether permission needs to be sought. Rules can vary significantly from region to region, so do check with your local authority, especially if your property is listed or located within a conservation area.

arden rooms take many forms, from small timber summerhouses that are just one step up from a traditional garden shed, to all-singing, alldancing permanent structures you could live in. They include gazebos and log cabins, hobbit-like pods and gypsy wagons, Bedouin tents and thatched rotundas: in short, virtually anything your imagination and budget can conjure up. You can buy them off-the-shelf, have them made from scratch to your own design, or customise a standard model to fit your own needs.

A modest affair might set you back less than £1,000, while anything large and lavish can easily move into five figures. But cost aside, your first considerations should be how much space you have available and what purpose the garden room will fulfil. Often, it is simply somewhere to relax after a few hours of potting-up and weeding, to escape with a good book and a glass of wine and enjoy a view of the garden. But you may have more serious intentions: perhaps you will throw parties there, or use it as a spare bedroom on occasion. Or you might require a properly equipped home office, gym, music room or art studio, with storage and perhaps an area for small meetings. At this point, it is worth bearing in mind that it is sometimes necessary to obtain planning permission for many new outdoor structures: seek advice before you buy, from your retailer or your local authority.

Security is also important for some garden rooms, so glass rather than plastic windows (perhaps even double-glazed), a sturdy door, high-quality ironmongery and a proper lock are all desirable.

You may want heating, lighting or even a water connection, in which case, unless you plan to go off-grid with solar or wind power, you should take account of how easy it will be to bring these supplies across from your home. The most swish outdoor buildings offer a fully insulated floor, walls and roof, underfloor heating, electric lights and power sockets, but there are no limits on what else you can add: think of an en suite bathroom or a surround-sound cinema, for example.

Buildings with a low pitch – often no more than 18 degrees – might benefit from a green roof. These contemporary designs demand extra roof support to accommodate the weight of the water and soil, as well as damp-proofing and water-retentive membrane. But once this is in place, sedums, grasses and even miniature meadows can be planted.

On the other hand, simplicity is also delightful, whether in the form of a cute shepherd’s hut with an armchair and a wood burner, a romantic tent with fairy lights and bunting, or a classic gazebo with a tiled roof and weathervane. The options really are endless. The garden room may be a fairly recent innovation, but it looks as if it is here to stay.

or those in search of horticultural seclusion, few locations are better than the garden shed. Yet while sheds are simple structures to buy and erect, it is wise to do some research first.

Decide at first how large it will be, and whether it will be used simply for storage or for more complicated tasks. If it’s the former, the shed need not be very sophisticated. Basic wooden constructions can be bought as kits for a few hundred pounds, with rough-sawn, overlapping boards as a starting point, and shiplap or tongueand-groove options being more expensive yet offering greater endurance. Those looking for something more from a shed could investigate

interior wall and roof insulation, properly fitted windows instead of acrylic sheets, solar panels, or even having it linked to mains electricity. Pent and apex roofs are other options, and it is also wise to seek advice on an appropriate hard-standing.

Regardless of purpose, good shed storage is essential. Include generous shelving, a long work table if possible, and plenty of hooks to keep tools in their place. For a neat hanging space free of upright supports, affix a sheet of plywood to one wall, to which hooks may freely be inserted.
