hristmas 2021 certainly has some making up to do after last year’s lacklustre celebrations. When it comes to gifting, we’re looking to give our loved ones something extra special – pieces that are personal, stand the test of time, express individuality, and can be worn out on the town. Katie Rowland, head of creative at Astley Clarke, notices that as winter approaches, personalisation is big news, with keepsake-style lockets making beautiful gifts to be worn as treasured heirlooms. “Christmas is our busiest time of the year and our signature lockets are hugely popular,” she says. We recently launched our first flagship store in London’s Seven Dials, which features a personalisation desk, enabling customers to engrave their lockets and customise with a photo of their choice inside – always keeping their loved ones close. The Astley Clarke Icon locket in diamonds and 14k gold brings all the shimmer and shine this festive period.” The London-based brand Carrie Elizabeth has also noticed personalisation on the rise. “One of my favourite aspects of jewellery is how it can be bought to mark a special occasion and is often gifted as a token of love or friendship. There is a real trend right now for personalisation and being able to gift a loved one something sentimental that will last a lifetime is an absolute pleasure,” says founder and CEO Carrie Dennahy. “Our 9k solid gold Custom Initial Necklace has been such a popular piece for us this last year – I think it just ticks all the boxes – personal, sentimental and because it’s solid gold it never needs to be taken off. In terms of brands, Hollie Harding, buying manager for non-apparel at luxury fashion department store Browns, has noticed Foundrae’s symbol charms, Mateo’s initial necklaces, Jia Jia’s natural crystal pieces and O Thongthai’s diamond horoscope charms gaining popularity. “We’re seeing customers attracted to jewellery styles that bring an emotive element, and that personal touch to a jewellery collection.” This year, people are looking to express their personal style, individuality and identity. “The three-piece Fusion ring allows the wearer the possibility

It is an organically shaped 18-karat white gold ring, pavé-set with brilliant cut diamonds, held between two others, one in yellow, one in rose gold,” says Ragnar Hjartarson, creative director at Georg Jensen. “People want something unique, handmade and lasting,” agrees Sophia Hirsh of Hirsh. “We spend so much time on each and every piece we make, from sketches to creation in our atelier. Our ethos is that every piece we create is a work or art.” An example is Hirsh’s winter special – a unique snowflake pendant that has been made annually for 16 years. “We always look forward to designing the new one, using different gems and creating something one-of-kind, just as snowflakes are in nature.” Colours this year are also set to go bold. “As the festive season approaches and the storm of Covid has finally started to die down, we are seeing jewellery trends shift towards bright colours, as consumers are being more bold and playful in their jewellery selection,” says Sheherazade Goldsmith of Loquet London. “This is mirrored in the selection of colourful, feminine locket rings and our Talisman Sapphire and Emerald hoops by Loquet London which are providing to be our

bestsellers right now.” Carrie Dennahy also advises going for bold, statement pieces. The Carrie Elizabeth Venus Collection offers deco vintage lush and launches in November. “It includes a super glamorous necklace and a few equally showstopping earring options.” At David Morris, the family jewellers have just launched a new collection entitled Asiyah, which Phoebe Morris is hoping will be a big hit this season. “The collection features rings, earrings, bangles and necklace all with coloured ceramic rondels and diamond set rondels in a huge array of colour. We feel that after last Christmas people are looking for bright coloured jewellery to brighten up these darker winter days, and the Asiyah collection inspired by the jewellery and art of ancient Egypt offer that in abundance,” she says. “We anticipate that coming out of the past 18 months, customers will be feeling more expressive and the holiday season will be a chance for them to experiment with more unique stones such as pink sapphires and yellow diamonds, or even neon brights from the likes of EÉRA and Gigi Clozeau.” L

This legendary pud has been a fixture on the Cinnamon Club Christmas menu for many years. Try it at home, or order yours this year at cinnamonclub.com, where a 1lb pud is £25 INGREDIENTS 100g dried apricots, chopped (to about the same size as the raisins) 100g dried figs, chopped (to about the same size as the raisins) 100g dried black currants 100g seedless raisins 100g sultanas 75g candied lemon and orange peel, finely chopped 50g almonds, finely chopped 50g walnuts, finely chopped 50g pecan nuts, finely chopped 50g pine nuts, finely chopped 50g hazelnuts, finely chopped 50g cashew nuts, finely chopped 1 tsp ground garam masala ½ tsp grated nutmeg 150ml dark rum 4 tbsp brandy 1 orange, zest and juice 1 lemon, zest and juice 225g salted butter 225g Muscovado sugar 3 free-range eggs 150g plain flour butter, for greasing pudding bowls

METHOD

Place all the dry fruits, peel, nuts and spices into a large bowl and mix together thoroughly. Add the rum and brandy and mix together well with your hands. Cover and leave it overnight to soak in the flavours. The next day, cream the butter and sugar together until smooth. Add the eggs, one at a time and continue mixing until all the eggs are incorporated into the mixture. The London Magazine 37

Fold in the flour and the soaked fruits and nuts. Divide the mixture between two greased 1½ litre/2½ pint heatproof pudding bowls, filling almost to the rim, then smooth down the surface. Cover each bowl with a large square of greaseproof paper, then cover that with a large square of aluminium foil. Tie the two sheets tightly into place under the rim with string, leaving long ends of excess string to make a handle. Loop one of the excess string lengths over the pudding basin and slide underneath the taut string holding the sheets in place on the other side. Bring up the string and firmly knot with the other piece of excess string, to form a secure handle to lift the pudding in and out of the water. To cook, stand both puddings on a trivet in a large, deep, heavy-based pan (or each pudding in a separate pan). Pour boiling water into the pan(s), enough to come about halfway up the sides of the bowls. Cover the pan(s) with a lid or a dome of foil and boil for seven hours. Check the water level regularly, topping it up with more boiling water as necessary to keep the bowls half submerged. After seven hours, remove the bowls from the pan and leave to cool. Untie and remove the foil and greaseproof sheets and replace with clean, dry sheets of both greaseproof paper and foil. Store in a cool, dry place. To reheat at Christmastime, return to a pan containing a few inches of boiling water, cover and steam for two hours, checking the water levels now and then, until it has completely heated through.

“This dish has all the elements of the perfect Christmas centrepiece, if it wasn’t for the fact that it is just too easy to prepare. You know how complicated we like to make it when it comes to Christmas – nothing can take half an hour.” INGREDIENTS 3 tbsp olive oil 1 small whole duck (about 1.5kg), cleaned 8 garlic cloves, skin on but crushed A handful of peeled chestnuts 1 onion, thinly sliced 6 sprigs fresh thyme 12 prunes 125ml sweet Pedro Ximénez sherry Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas mark 6. Heat the olive oil in a wide ovenproof pan or casserole dish over a medium heat. Season the duck with salt and pepper and pan-fry on all sides until golden. Help yourself with a pair of tongs. After ten minutes, remove the duck from the pan and set aside. Add the garlic cloves, chestnuts and onion to the pan and fry for ten minutes. Add the thyme and prunes and cook for a further five minutes. Return the duck to the pan and flambé with the sherry. To do this, slowly tilt the pan towards the flame until the sherry catches, or light with a match. Let the flames flare up then die down and then add 250ml water. Put the pan in the oven and cook for 25 minutes, then switch off the heat and leave the duck in the oven for a further 20 minutes without opening the door. This should crisp up the skin and cook the duck to perfection as well as resting the meat. Serve as a centrepiece with some good bread or roasted new potatoes. 38 The London Magazine

Bramata polenta is a rustic, stonemilled variety of cornmeal that’s also gluten free (find it at souschef.co.uk). INGREDIENTS 500g mixed wild mushrooms (such as ceps, black trompette, chanterelle and girolle) 1 bay leaf 200ml olive oil 180g bramata polenta 1 garlic clove, crushed 20g thyme sprigs 4 duck eggs 100g Parmesan, grated

METHOD Clean the mushrooms and cut away and discard any dried or dirty bits. Set aside. In a pan, bring 1 litre water to a gentle boil with the bay leaf, 100ml olive oil and a pinch of salt. Slowly pour the bramata polenta into the boiling water and cook for 45 minutes, stirring constantly, until smooth. Check the seasoning. Cover and keep hot. Put the remaining olive oil in a large frying pan set over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and cook until soft, and any liquid has reduced. Stir the garlic and thyme sprigs into the mushrooms and cook for one minute or so. Check the seasoning. Just before serving, bring a large pan of water to a simmer. Spin the water using a spoon to create a whirlpool effect. Break a duck egg in a cup and slowly add to the water. Repeat with the remaining eggs. Poach for five-six minutes, until the yolks are just starting to set. Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and blot against a piece of kitchen paper to remove excess water. To assemble, divide the polenta between four shallow bowls and make a small well in the centre. Place some sautéed mushrooms into each well (removing the thyme sprigs), top with a poached egg and sprinkle over the Parmesan. 40 The London Magazine

And a damn good alternative to the steaming rich Christmas pudding.” INGREDIENTS A handful of the following: Plums, halved and destoned Figs, halved Dried apricots, halved Blackberries 1 vanilla bean 1 cinnamon stick 1 star anise 1 glass of white wine 1 tbsp brown sugar Juice of ½ lemon 6 egg whites 300g caster sugar 100g hazelnuts, toasted and chopped 600ml double cream 1 tbsp chai tea Pistachio nuts, to garnish

METHOD

Heat the oven to 200°C. Pour the wine and the sugar into a small pan and bring to a simmer, slice the vanilla pod in half, scrape out the seeds and add to the wine, along with the pod itself and the lemon juice and simmer for another couple minutes. Place the fruit into an ovenproof dish, pour over the wine and place in the oven for about 15 minutes. Take out of the oven and leave to cool. Turn the oven down to 120°C. Place the egg whites in a bowl and whisk to soft peaks. Slowly add the sugar – a spoonful at a time until all combined. It should be thick with a good shine to it. Add the hazelnuts and carefully fold in with a metal spoon. Line a baking tray with parchment and spoon the meringue onto the tray – we like to make one large one, but you could make smaller ones if you wish. Place in the oven and cook for about 40 minutes – you want it to be crisp on the outside yet chewy in the middle. Place the chai tea in a spice grinder or pestle and mortar and grind to a fine powder. Place the cream in a bowl and whisk till it’s beginning to thicken and add the chai powder, taste and add more if necessary. Whisk to soft peaks. To assemble place the meringue on your serving platter, spoon over the cream then place the fruit on top and finish by sprinkling over chopped pistachios. L

When it comes to sparkling wines, Chardonnay-based Champagnes are fabulous as an aperitif. The growers at Lelarge Pugeot work organically and biodynamically and achieve a really good concentration out of their grapes so are a delightful accompaniment to shellfish platter on Christmas Day (Lelarge Pugeot, pictured above, £36.75-£56.95). With a chalky, linear character perfect with fresh oysters, Jacques Lassaigne is first and foremost a great wine and then a great Champagne (£49.95). He uses very low levels of sulphur and only at the press. This gives a delicate bubble and linear almost-chalky Chablis quality to the palate. Finally Veuve Fourny (£34.75-£53.45) always delivers great value for money, whether it is their standard Cuvée or their vintage. This is the perfect gift to take along to celebrate the season that won’t break the bank but will make you look amazing! thewhiskyexchange.com

There’s so much going on Christmas Day, not to mention on the plate, that I think what you want is a good serviceable wine, but perhaps not your best bottles. I often find an older southern Rhone is a great choice. Yannick Feraud is amongst the most exciting young winemaking talent in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and his Chateauneufdu-Pape, Domaine Feraud et Fils, 2017 at £38.58, has striking finesse. If I’m going to open a best bottle at Christmas, it’ll be Champagne – at the start of the day. Pierre Paillard, Les Parcelles, Bouzy, Grand Cru, at £32.82, has to be one of the best serious nonvintage cuvées on the market and is great all on its own, but with enough stuffing to pair with roast chicken. Alternatively, Pascal Douquet, Arpège, 1er Cru, Extra Brut, NV, at £34.42. Winemaking for this 100 per cent Chardonnay Champagne is natural and non-interventionist, with only wild yeasts used for fermentations. Christmas is all about family coming together across multi-generations, so make sure there’s something for everyone. It’s always a nice touch to make sure you know your guests’ preferences before placing a wine order – this will then be a talking point throughout the meal. This year consider a English sparkling. Nutty Vintage Brut 2017 (£25.50 from nutbournevineyards.com), is a particular favourite. I always think buying local is the way to go. Visit your local vineyard and take time to learn about the wine and the producer. Whatever wine you choose, consider the farming and its origin, look for organic and biodynamic producers, or at the larger end of the scale, the welfare of the farming. The wines I purchase for our restaurants are chosen from producers with a similar ethos in their farming methods, using smaller production scales and reduced spraying. perhaps textured glass tumblers with classic silver cutlery. Flowers and foliage are essential, of course, and once the candlesticks and vases are in place, I like to arrange a thick line of berried holly along the centre of the table, adding pine cones and some of my favourite festive decorations. For flowers, I buy from my local wholesaler and do the arrangements myself. That way, the joyful colour of the food can play its part in the decoration – the red of the cranberry sauce, the green sprouts. The raw edges of my dark wood dining table add to the effect – a nibbleedged marble tabletop would look fabulous too – and is a lovely way to off-set the antique linen napkins I found at Guinevere (guinevere.co.uk); they were embroidered with my initials, so I had to buy them, and I like to roll them and tie them up with Petersham ribbon (from vvrouleaux.com). AT FIRST SIGHT

The splendid views from Battersea Bridge suggest that this is a modern neighbourhood, all monolithic steel and glass buildings, with the skyscrapers of the City on the horizon. Inland, however, what emerges is a classic, leafy Victorian suburb of solid corner pubs, smart family-sized redbrick houses, and plentiful green space. As you move east, meanwhile, the towering chimneys of Battersea Power Station are

And, with two new Tube stations recently opened – Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms, both on the Northern Line – a busy programme of seasonal events planned around the power station, and a milestone year ahead, the area is poised to become a destination in its own right.

Amelia Lambrianou, sales manager from Marsh & Parsons, believes Battersea’s profile is on the up. “In the past, the issue with the area was that it did not have the best transport links,” she says. “Now we have two new stations, and that will add value.” Certainly, the initial signs are good. On the opening day of the stations in the early autumn, Rightmove reported property searches in the area leaped more than 200 per cent as Londoners gained new commuting options. So confident is estate agent JLL that Battersea is poised to enjoy a “roaring twenties” that its forecasters predict prices will rise almost 25 per cent between 2021 and 2025, in part driven by premium new homes coming onto the market in and around the regenerated power station.

The first residents moved onto the site in 2017 and the first apartments within the main power station building were completed in May. Next year landmark apartment blocks by Frank Gehry and Norman Foster, flanking the power station, will also be finished and it is estimated that by 2030 there will be 33,000 people living in the area which looks right onto the river. Daniel Turner, director at JLL, feels Battersea should see a bounce in interest now that it is on the Tube map and with the power station opening imminent. “There will have been a proportion of people who once discarded Battersea because it did not have a Tube and transport options,” he says. “That, plus all the retail, should pull more people in.” The London Magazine 55

Battersea High Street Manna Dew sells gluten-free breads and pastries, and the delights of Northcote Road are a short walk away. When the main power station building opens next summer its turbine halls will be filled with around 100 new shops and restaurants. Brands such as Hugo Boss, Uniqlo, Space NK, Kiehl’s, and Jo Malone have signed up as well as Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, The Kooples, Gant, perfumer Le Labo and Japanese patisserie Kova. An Apple outlet is an inevitability since the tech giant is setting up its UK campus in the power station. Super schools are one of the reasons parents love Battersea. For younger pupils there is the Ofsted-outstanding L’École de Battersea, where pupils aged three to 12 can receive a bilingual education. Thomas’s Battersea also gets top marks and comes with royal approval too – Prince George and Princess Charlotte both don the navy and red school uniform.

The power station is aiming to become a focal point of the area this season. Over Christmas there will be a “winter village” featuring market stalls, food and drink pop-ups, and performances by the community choir to put you in festive spirits. This will be followed up in January by The Light Festival, featuring installations by leading artists using neon, LED and fluorescent tubes. When the power station opens it will contain a cinema, hotel, and events space seating up to 1,400 people. And for those with a head for heights there will also be a power station Chimney Lift, installed in the station’s north west chimney. Before the power station revamp retail therapy in Battersea was a little on the lacklustre side. There are a few local gems worth exploring like Battersea Flower Station, on Battersea Park Road. On

The past couple of years has been a bit of a property rollercoaster in Battersea – mirroring the pandemic experience of most of the rest of London. key streets are those with easy access to Battersea Park – Warriner Gardens, Cambridge Road, and Prince of Wales Drive. “Riverside apartments are not selling as quickly, but that will pick up as international investors come back to the UK,” says Lambrianou. Buyers often venture to Battersea from Fulham, Pimlico and Earl’s Court because you do get more for your money south of the river, even if you are only fractionally south. Daniel Turner, director of JLL, says that resale prices of apartments around the power station had held firm since the start of 2020. “It has not suffered, but at the same time it has not been indifferent to the pandemic, and the move towards working from home and outside space,” he says. ven a child who doesn’t watch or read the news cannot fail to be aware of climate change. Whether it be recent forest fires in Russia and Spain, the extinction of species, recycling campaigns, sustainability or the impact of what we eat, climate change is all around, and children are all-consumed by it. Over the past few years, children have been exposed to young climate activists such as Greta Thunberg, student strikes, Extinction Rebellion and multiple protests. The environmental agenda has become a curriculum staple in our schools, and rightly so. Most schools are openly playing up climate action, with eco councils and eco prefects becoming the norm within school communities. Yet over-consumption of the environmental agenda also brings with it a darker reality. Climate anxiety is growing among children and there is a palpable sense of apprehension, burden and

fears about the future. In some cases, there are even deeper feelings of hopelessness and despair. In a similar way that politicians and the media during the 1980s fuelled children’s fears with the prospect of nuclear oblivion, the same sense of panic and fear around individual safety that stems from predictions of a future of uncertainty and destruction, are consuming many young people’s minds today. An ‘extreme’ environment approach usually leads to conclusions that if the damage is done, then there’s no point in trying. It’s concerning to learn that some young people are so affected by climate change that they’re even questioning the feasibility or the security of having their own children in the

future. Why bring a new human being into a world that has a bleak future? Again, this comes back to how we communicate the impact of climate change to our children. We must continue to push the importance for change, but in a way that is supportive, invigorating and useful. Shared experience: Inspirational speakers in school can be very useful in sharing positive experiences of those who have made a difference and are focused on giving back rather than impending doom. Age-appropriate: We must consider the age group we are educating and adapt accordingly. For younger children, fears are more related to things they can readily grasp such as physical safety or animal extinction. For teens, the focus might be more on how the world will be impacted by refugees. Accept and acknowledge: For parents, it’s important not to brush off the impact of climate change. Many of us grew up in a different generation, but we must acknowledge children’s worries and reassure them about the future. Support and recognise: The climate agenda is vast, so whether your child is going vegan to support the environment, buying second-hand fashion or taking part in a local community recycling project, support and recognise the importance of these principled acts. Self-educate: Our children will hopefully be the last generation to suffer, but these things matter and to fully participate in meaningful conversations with the young, we must re-educate ourselves too. ‘A RECORD YEAR’ Zoe Dare Hall reports on the winners and stand-out sales of the London market in 2021

or a year that started with a whimper – those long, dark days of the January and February lockdown – 2021 soon picked up apace in the prime London property market. “2021 rewrote the rules,” says Guy Meacock of Prime Purchase. “It performed in exactly the reverse of what we might have expected when Covid first hit in 2020. It is staggering, in the context of what’s been going on, how many agents are reporting a record year.” The first half of the year saw a record level of transactions in Prime Central London, supporting year-on-year growth of 1.2 per cent, “the first time annual growth has surpassed 1 per cent since Q3 2014,” says Louis Harding, head of London at Strutt & Parker. Since July 2020, sales in the £1m-plus market have been an average of 46 per cent above “normal levels”, says Frances Clacy, Savills’ associate director of residential research. Even without overseas buyers,

Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster saw the same amount of £1m-plus property transactions in the year leading up to May 2021 – that’s £4.46bn worth – than in the year to May 2019. But where prime buyers are spending their money – and what they are buying – has changed.

THE HOTTEST AREAS

For buyers preferring a central London village to the rural version, it was all about Marylebone. The area bucked 2020’s ‘escape to the country’ trend, seeing £5m+ sales rise by 36 per cent last year, says Knight Frank, and hot launches this year include NativeLand’s TwentyFive. But for many wealthy families, the focus has been on space: making the move to outer prime areas such as Wimbledon, Richmond and Chiswick for huge houses and big gardens near parks. Wimbledon Village saw £213m worth of £1m-plus transactions in the year to May 2021, reports Clacy, and Clapham Common saw the greatest increase in spend (115 per cent) on £1m-plus properties compared to the year to May 2019. It’s been a stellar year in Brook Green in West London too. Finlay Brewer – which reports the best year ever for transaction levels – handled eight of Brook Green’s ten £2m-plus sales this year. They’ve seen record prices, too, including £4.75m for a house on Dewhurst Road and £5.8m on Hammersmith Grove. “There has been a lack of stock, so for the first time in a few years we’ve seen bidding wars and gazumping come back into play, which

always pushes values up,” comments Paul Cosgrove, partner at Finlay Brewer. Marsh & Parsons also highlights freehold houses in Brook Green – along with nearby Brackenbury Village and Hammersmith – as in “huge” demand. “The schools here are very popular and buyers want the community feel in an area that’s more affordable than Holland Park and Notting Hill,” comments area director David Hill. And for Cluttons, 2021’s undisputed star is St Katharine Docks, where it has sold three properties in six months and rental properties – particularly penthouses – have gone within a few months from attracting no interest to seeing multiple bids within days of going on the market. “Sales prices have increased by seven per cent over the year and we are now seeing the return of international interest as well as the traditional domestic market who are returning to City offices,” comments James Hyman, head of residential at Cluttons.

STAND-OUT SALES

So much is about turnkey luxury these days – but the penthouse at Southbank Tower shows demand for the exact opposite. “It was sold as shell and core,

Tucked away in a former delivery yard, this Tardis-like house includes a 60-feet long reception room, sunken cinema, indoor pool and a water garden. “It offers a true sense of escapism as we emerge from 19 months of restrictions,” comments Guy Bradshaw, managing director at UK Sotheby’s International Realty. For Ed Boden, head of Strutt & Parker’s South Kensington office, the landmark sale of the year was a five-bed, 6,000 sq ft triplex apartment with a swimming pool in a listed building at 47 Onslow Gardens, which sold for “within five per cent of its £12.5m asking price”. Boden adds that South Kensington has had a record year, with four of Strutt & Parker’s largest London transactions. Finally north of Hyde Park, Connaught Village – an “under the radar place” says Savills – has notched up some record sales too, including a family house that sold for £8.5m, the highest ever price achieved on Connaught Square. n December as a Londoner, you have two choices. You can complain about the crowds of shoppers and revellers. Or you can succumb to the season’s delights, some of which are alcohol, calorie and cost free. My all-time favourites include strolling down the smarter streets of Fulham and Notting Hill to check out the architecture and observe the Christmas wreath oneupmanship on front doors painted in matte greens and greys from eco-conscious brands like Little Greene. These displays of foliage, featuring berried ivy and eucalyptus may be understated, yet they speak volumes about the impeccable taste of the residents. Occasionally, you will spot a deliberately incongruous neon reindeer, chosen to demonstrate that the inhabitant of the property has a quirky intellect and is too rich to care what the neighbours think. While rating the quality of the yuletide greenery and selecting a winner for each road, I try to catch a glimpse of winter decor makeovers inside the homes. One item that I expect to spot this December is the White Company’s sheepskin chair, a cosy cocoon in which to sit out the New Year chill and higher fuel bills. The lights on the trees inside these homes tend to be white. But, on a shopping street, more exuberance is welcome. Carnaby Street’s colourful illuminations, in tune with the area’s hip history, can be relied on to lift the spirits. The district is one of the stops on my Christmas lights walk, another free treat, although I will be buying presents as I go, enjoying the decorations in the shops. This strip looks like a film set for a London romantic comedy, but at Christmas is it yet more magical be raising their game this month, as they continue their post-pandemic reinvention. Despite fears of the extinction of our city’s bricks and mortar stores, the survivors have developed a new ability to thrill. My Christmas lights route starts in Regent Street, where the stunning illuminations cause me to lose my Londoner ‘nothing-surprises-me’ cool. But December is the month when it is acceptable to look awe-struck; I ditch the ennui, along with subtle lipsticks for Charlotte Tilbury’s Red Carpet Red.

ILLUMINATING Carnaby Street’s colourful Christmas lights are in keeping with its hip history

The shops in this elegant part of town are an essential part of this experience, so too is a visit to the bar and restaurant at the Ham Yard Hotel in that network of chic Soho streets just minutes from the glossy thoroughfare of Regent Street. This venue, one of the Firmdale group of luxe hotels, offers the chance to eavesdrop on the conversations at the drinks proceeding the smartest Christmas office parties. Interior style inspiration is also part of the experience. The Ham Yard’s mix of colour, pattern and texture, created by the group’s co-founder Kit Kemp, shows that many of the world’s best interior design ideas are born in London. Marylebone High Street is another destination which puts you in the mood to spend in its boutiques and celebrate in its restaurants, like Fischer’s with its gemütlich Viennese cuisine. Why fly to a German Christmas market when the Mitteleuropean vibe is available at home? Marylebone Lane, which links the High Street with Oxford Street, is lined with places to eat. On any evening this pedestrianised strip looks like a film set for a London romantic comedy, but at Christmas it is yet more magical. A resolve to make the most of any outing, whatever the elements, can be seen at the skating rinks at Somerset House and the Natural History Museum. I will be a spectator at these events (skating is not one of my skills) bundled in faux fur and admiring the museum’s Gothic revival towers and Somerset House’s Neoclassical façade. These building bring 52 weeks of joy a year. I will be marking this by doing some purchasing in their shops. L
