Size is everything in the world of luxury cruising, with smaller ships with all-suite or ocean-facing cabins and almost as many crew as guests becoming increasingly popular. In 2024, new ships carrying less than 1,000 guests include Silversea Cruises’ Silver Ray and Explora II from Explora Journeys, while Viking’s latest ocean ship Vela launches in December. Meanwhile, top-to-toe makeovers of Crystal’s relaunched 606-passenger Crystal Serenity and 740-guest Crystal Symphony have been followed by orders for two new 690-passenger ships. Uniworld’s UK MD Chris Townson says guests are willing to spend more on higher category cabins, adding: “We attribute this to a lingering post-Covid ‘carpe diem’ mentality.” Caroline Smith, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Vice President of North America & International Marketing, agrees: “We’ve often seen the highest suite categories sell first, reflecting the exciting demand for high-value experiences.” RSSC’s first new class of ship – Seven Seas Prestige – is set to debut in 2026, promising some of the industry’s highest spaceto-suite ratios.

Longer journeys, smaller ships, younger travellers and more immersive experiences. The luxury cruise world’s evolving fast, so now’s the time to get onboard...
WORDS DEBORAH STONE

Cruise holidayers are increasingly splashing cash on the chance to travel adventurously – in style and comfort. Luxury expedition ships are built to combine the best of small-ship cruising – excellent wellness facilities and superb culinary standards – with specialist designs, such as ice-strengthened hulls and hybrid battery power. Seabourn, which has two polarclass expedition ships Venture and Pursuit, as well as five luxury ocean ships, is seeing a trend towards “life-list”, long-haul routes, particularly to Japan, the Arctic and Antarctic. Seabourn’s UK, Middle East and Africa Vice President Lynn Narraway says: “There’s also been a great deal of interest in ‘warm weather’ destinations, such as the South Pacific and Australia’s remote Kimberley region.” ▲

Overnight stays are popular with guests who want to experience their chosen destinations at night, which is why Regent Seven Seas Cruises’s 2026-2027 Voyage collection is offering 144 overnight stays in places like Bora Bora, Mumbai and Hong Kong. “Our guests are increasingly placing a higher value on their time and experiences, showing a strong preference for longer voyages to far-flung and exotic destinations,” says Regent’s Caroline Smith. “This reflects a broader desire to fully immerse themselves in each location, seeking out unique, culturally rich experiences.” Seabourn passengers have similar requirements, as Lynne Narraway reveals: “Our aim is to provide our guests with a very personalised, immersive experience wherever they choose to travel in the world, and this is resonating with younger travellers who are seeking an all-inclusive, curated holiday.”

There’s a growing appetite for add-on action, from meeting local communities to exploring beyond the itinerary.
“Guests are looking for more meaningful and luxurious holidays across the board,” says Uniworld’s Chris Townson. “We’ve seen a 34% year-on-year increase in UK clients choosing to add luxury land or rail extensions to their cruise, making their travel longer, deeper, more experiential and more relaxing.”
As a result, Uniworld has longer itineraries for 2025, such as its 15-day Istanbul to Paris trip, which includes the Golden Eagle Danube Express rail journey and seven days on the Seine.
Scenic’s river, sea and land itineraries can be combined if required, while the Scenic Enrich programme offers bucketlist experiences. “Also, our Freechoice programme allows guests to tailor excursions,” says Brand and Marketing Manager Dominic Keely. “One day they could visit a local market with a chef, and the next, explore Bordeaux in a sidecar.”

Despite the higher price of luxury cruises, a new generation are interested in experiencing the joys of sailing on stylish ships with exciting itineraries.
Swan Hellenic offers travellers the chance to holiday on three new-build ice-class expedition cruise ships with five-star facilities such boutique cabins with sea views, panoramic saunas, heated infinity pools and stargazing decks. “We’ve seen an increase in millennials travelling, which resulted in us offering more adventurous on-shore expeditions to meet their needs,” says Swan Hellenic Chief Commercial Officer Patrizia Iantorno. Virgin Voyages also offer younger guests a host of destinations and itineraries aimed at party-loving travellers. Most Silversea guests are baby boomers, says Peter Shanks, Managing Director of Silversea UK, Ireland, but the company has seen a rise in younger guests. “Given the increase of land-based holiday prices, younger travellers are beginning to see the appeal of luxury cruises,” he says. “Silversea’s welcome receptions and mixers facilitate onboard friendships.”
Emerald Cruises not only has a fleet of river ships, but also two purposebuilt 100-guest luxury yachts and a third arriving in 2026, so it’s no surprise that UK Brand Manager Nicola Heil identifies specialist cruises for “a new type of cruiser” as a major trend. “Emerald Cruises’ yachts have a selection of SEABOB water scooters, paddleboards and snorkel kits, a designated Wellness Centre with an infrared spa, and a fleet of e-bikes for guests to explore in-port destinations,” says Nicola.

“To build on this, Emerald Kaia, setting sail in April 2026, will feature an innovative gym that opens up to an indoor-outdoor workout space, as well as an expanded Elements Spa reflecting a broader focus on nurturing the mind, body, and spirit.” Food-themed cruises are also massively popular. Swan Hellenic partners with Jeunes Restaurateurs, which provides gourmet chefs for its Maris Culinary Discovery At Sea programme of cookery classes. And Scenic’s Dominic Keely says there’s a rise in guests looking for world-class culinary tours: “We’ve listened and catered to this by launching the Rhône Bliss: Beaujolais Harvest Journey sailing, which allows guests to experience the Beaujolais harvest in August, meet a local vintner and exclusively sample some of the region’s best with experts.”

Matias Lira, Crystal’s SVP of Trade Sales, sums up the rapidly changing world of luxury cruising, saying: “The upscale cruise market has changed. It’s becoming a bit younger, more active and adventurous, offering access to new exotic destinations. There’s a trend towards more immersive and culturally enriching experiences in destinations, with itineraries that include less-visited ports and longer stays in key destinations to allow for deeper exploration.” Edwina Lonsdale of specialist travel agent Mundy Adventures adds: “We’re at an exciting time in the luxury cruise industry, with many new ships in the category ticking boxes in so many categories: expedition, grand-hotel style, contemporary resort, tiny, spacious, river and more.”

Look out for the oceans’ most decadent interior designs on your next luxury cruise…

Cruise ship interiors are more considered than ever before, and in the luxury sector, functional yet timeless design is a non-negotiable. Style and aesthetics matter, but there’s rather more to it than you might think.
It’s a fact that your environment affects your mood, and the trend of opening up spaces, enhancing flow and connecting passengers with the ocean shows no sign of abating. Wellbeing is also being taken into consideration, with designers ‘manipulating’ guest’s moods to enhance the onboard experience.
Oceania Cruises’ Oceania Vista has an airier feel than the other ships in the fleet, with a design vision focused on ‘quiet’ luxury to suit discerning guests’ tastes and requirements. One highlight is the Grand Dining Room, a conservatory-like space that gives diners a great view no matter where they’re seated.
Studio DADO designed most of the new-build ship, resulting in a synergy between the common spaces on board. “Sometimes, you can have five or six architects working on a ship, which can leave spaces feeling disjointed – on Vista you don’t have that because we were able to curate the overall guest experience,” shares founding partner Yohandel Ruiz.
The design of one of this year’s most talked about new ships, Cunard’s Queen Anne, was inspired by the line’s history and British heritage, drawing on art deco influences and referencing the Cunard archives.
Designers worked to blend practicality with the romanticism of ocean travel, creating an experience that resonates with loyal passengers, as well as new to cruise travellers. David Collins Studio was tasked with designing several of the new spaces, including speciality restaurants Aji Wa and Sir Samuel’s.
“While we wanted to honour Cunard’s heritage and the golden age of travel, we also aimed to create something fresh and innovative,” says design director Lewis Taylor. “These venues really provided the opportunity to create something entirely new, but even in signature venues, we made sure to incorporate elements of the past while embracing innovation.”
This approach can be seen throughout the ship, including the Princess Grill restaurant, which is the first dining room at sea to have custom embroidered walls. The motif is inspired by the arbutus flower, native to Halifax, Nova Scotia – the destination of Sir Samuel Cunard’s maiden voyage.
Another luxury newcomer is Silversea’s Silver Ray, the second ship in the line’s Nova Class and the largest in the fleet, meaning more space onboard to elevate the already exceptional venues.

The ship’s asymmetrical layout and horizontal styling ensures that all suites are located forward, while aft-positioned public spaces have generous proportions and higher ceilings for a more spacious feel. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer unimpeded outward-facing vistas, while the 1,400 sq ft main pool is a focal point – Nova Class pools are the largest in the fleet.
“One of our objectives when designing our innovative Nova Class ships was to create an environment in which luxury meets the serene beauty of the sea,” shares Roberto Bruzzone, the SVP of Silversea’s global marine operations. “To achieve this, we emphasised natural light and expansive views, ensuring that guests always feel a seamless connection to the ocean.
“Our goal was to combine Silversea’s signature elegance with a contemporary aesthetic, providing the feel of an upscale boutique hotel on the water that allows guests to experience awe-inspiring, uninterrupted views of the destination.”
Indoor-outdoor inspiration has been taken to another level on Ritz-Carlton’s super yacht Ilma, which features the Beach House, a new destination designed in tandem with Toronto-based luxury design firm Chapi Chapo Design. The eatery will transport guests to a waterfront haven with 180-degree views, with casual coastal dining featuring culinary creativity rooted in Peruvian and Pan-Latin cuisine.

“Bold patterns and unexpected colour palettes create a space that embraces Peruvian cuisine while celebrating and reflecting the culture, both aesthetically and atmospherically,” says Tatiana Sheveleva, partner, Chapi Chapo Design.
The boutique, Euro-chic design of Explora Journeys’ ships Explora I and Explora II has been inspired by the sea. With 300 years of maritime heritage behind them, the brand’s owners have realised their long-standing vision to redefine the luxury ocean travel experience for a new generation of discerning travellers.
Room to breathe is also important to the line, which offers amongst the largest (in terms of square metres) entry-level suites in the luxury sector – the all-suite ships offer expansive living areas and generously proportioned private outdoor terraces.
“There’s luxury in space, with no overcrowding around our four communal pools or in the many public areas and restaurants,” confirms Antonio di Nenno, Explora Journeys’ director of architecture and design.
“A successful interior design is knowing that guests feel welcome and relaxed,” he continues. “We prioritise functionality, comfort and aesthetic appeal, so that our ships feel like a home at sea.”

LUXURY SMALL SHIP
Sailing leisurely around the Greek islands on luxury yacht-style ship
Wind Star is the perfect way to enjoy a honeymoon at sea WORDS VICKY MAYER

Choosing the right man to marry isn’t dissimilar to choosing the right cruise line. Both need careful consideration, but get it right and you’ll spend many happy years together.
With that in mind, reader, I married the man and chose a glorious seven-day Greek cruise on 148-passenger ship Wind Star for our honeymoon. This luxury small ship boasts traditional teak decking, impressive sails and best of all, 101 friendly staff, meaning from the moment you step onboard, you’re totally pampered and treated like royalty.
This was my first small-ship cruise experience and from the moment we set foot onboard, I knew this elegant vessel would be the perfect setting for a romantic cruise. Spanning four decks, it’s large enough to find a secluded place to sip cocktails and watch the sun go down or enjoy a new book, but small enough to make you feel like you’ve lucked out and are sailing on your own special yacht.
Both my husband Robert and I are sociable creatures, so we were very happy to enjoy a honeymoon with other people around us and

destinations, giving those onboard an authentic taste of this wonderful region.
I loved the wonderful island of Patmos, where we enjoyed a live Greek Orthodox service at the Cave of the Apocalypse, where St John the Theologian is said to have written the Book of Revelation, and took a tour around the 11th century monastery dedicated to the saint that overlooks the whitewashed houses of the hilltop capital, Hora.
A visit to KuŞadasi in Turkey, home of UNESCO-listed site Ephesus was equally thrilling. Built in the 10th century BC, this was of Greece’s main commercial centres. Today a tour around the well-preserved ruins is a highlight of this cruise and even better, guests on Wind Star are treated to an exclusive candlelit dinner in the ruins of the Library of Celsus at Ephesus as part of the cruise.
However, the destination that stole our hearts was the perfectly preserved medieval castle town of Monemvasia, situated on a small tied island, accessible only by foot from the Greek mainland. Here, locals swim in deep inky blue waters while visitors can enjoy regional food and

as we’re both keen travellers, the lure of a portrich itinerary on the Treasures of the Greek Isles cruise, gave us a wonderful week of new adventures to look forward to.
As we sailed out of Piraeus harbour in Athens, with a glass of fizz in our hands, we clinked our glasses to our new future as a married couple and what adventures lay ahead.
Boasting 227 inhabited islands, Greece is blessed with one of the biggest natural playgrounds in the world, offering lucky travellers the chance to enjoy adventurous sailing trips to destinations blessed with rich history and culture.
Our island-rich itinerary included stops on world-famous islands Mykonos and Santorini, and while both destinations had always been on my bucket list, I preferred the smaller ports of call. Because of its smaller size, Wind Star is able to sail to some of the area’s lesser-known

wine from the stylish roof-top bars. Chic and stylish, this is a place unknown to most Brits, and a great addition to the cruise itinerary.
Who doesn’t deserve a bit of luxury on their honeymoon? Sailing on Wind Star, we enjoyed the thrill of travelling on a yacht-style ship where the staff are there to attend to your every need and the small number of guests onboard means everyone has room to breathe. So no queuing for dinner, drinks or tenders, and best of all, the chance to start married life enjoying a wonderful adventure we’ll remember forever.

It’s amazing what you can see 200 metres below the water’s surface. Over a series of submarine dives in 2022, pilots on Viking’s expedition ships Octantis and Polaris got a rare sighting of the giant phantom jellyfish, in Antarctica. Only 126 encounters have been recorded since the species was first described in 1910. A paper authored by two of its chief scientists was subsequently published in the the Norwegian Polar Institute’s science journal. Optional sub dives are narrated by the pilot and cost $500.
