Syros, Greece While Santorini and Mykonos bring Instagrammers flocking with their winding white-stone streets and bougainvillea-draped balconies, there’s another lesser-known star among the Cyclades. Syros is more than just a tourist hot spot – it’s a living, breathing Greek island with a bustling capital, Ermoupoli, full of grand, honey-coloured stone buildings that showcase the wealth amassed here when it was a centre of shipbuilding in the 19th century. While its port is awhirl with activity from dawn until dusk, it’s easy to sneak away to one of the small, secluded beaches that dot its shores or head inland to the lofty reaches of old town Ano Syros. This medieval settlement is high up in the hills, built by the Venetians and full of twisting passageways or tiny hiding places designed to confuse would-be invaders. It was also the birthplace of Greek rebetiko music, and you’ll hear those blues-style strains echoing in the distance as you settle in for a coffee on one of the cosy cafe terraces while sweeping views of Syros unfold below. >> Turn to p84 for more inspiring cruise destinations to explore in 2022

Rugged, snow-blanketed mountains stretching towards the sky, bright white glaciers calving into an ice-scattered sea and penguins plunging from the rocky shore into frigid waters – these sights are not only the preserve of adventurers who cross the Drake Passage towards the remote reaches of Antarctica. They can also be found edging the southernmost shores of the South American continent, where the Chilean fjords offer a taste of expedition cruising without the time commitment. Smaller cruise ships skim in and out of these glacier-carved fjords, following in the footsteps of Charles Darwin’s legendary journey on HMS Beagle. Admire the dramatic terrain of Tierra del Fuego – dubbed the Land of Fire by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1520, named for the fires he saw flickering along the coast – passing by elephant seals lounging on the beaches of Ainsworth Bay or tiny Magellanic penguins on Isla Magdalena. It’s home to some true once-in-a-lifetime experiences, whether sailing down so-called Glacier Alley, surrounded by ice on all sides, or venturing right to the edge of the world at Cape Horn, where there’s nothing but stormy seas from there to Antarctica.

ASK THE EXPERTS
Got a question about cruise holidays or travelling in the pandemic? Get in touch with our experts at info@cruise-international.com We haven’t seen our grandkids as much as we’d like during the pandemic, so we’d love to take the family on a cruise, but what can we book that will have enough for all three generations to do – and enough space if we get sick of each other? Julie Peasgood, Cruise International contributor and columnist
Becky Fantham, Cruise International contributor When UK cruising finally restarted after the cruise lockdown, it was lovely to see so many people taking advantage of these great-value UK cruises. It seems like you’ve caught the cruise bug –
there’s no going back now! Seeing as you loved the beauty of the British Isles, I’d wager you’d enjoy discovering the unspoilt, and rather dramatic, majesty of the Norwegian fjords. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to cruise lines: I’d recommend the cool Scandi vibes of P&O Cruises’ Iona, Princess Cruises’ chic Sky Princess or brand-new British cruise line Ambassador, sailing from Tilbury.

We tried our first cruise around the UK last summer and loved it – where should we go next?
I am a big fan of multigenerational cruises, having had quality time and a unifying experience with my daughter, her husband and 18-month-old granddaughter. Focus on the bigger, newer ships with plenty of facilities, kids’ clubs, entertainment and activities for all ages. We travelled with P&O Cruises, but other notable lines for families are NCL, Royal Caribbean, Disney, Carnival and MSC. Arrange for adjacent or perhaps interconnecting cabins, though don’t feel you have to do everything together. Instead, choose a time each day to meet up and take it in turns to pick the venue. For destinations, think about the Caribbean, Europe or even Alaska, and consider excursions that appeal to the whole family to create happy memories on land as well as at sea.
What happens if I book a cruise then restrictions in that destination change – will I be able to get my money back or change the date of my sailing? Simone Clark, senior vice-president of global supply, Iglu Cruise Most cruise lines have flexible booking terms so I recommend you check what they are when you book. A cruise specialist will be able to assist you. Often you will be able to amend your booking to a different date if the situation changes, or in some cases, ships will still sail but just have a minor itinerary change.

CRUISE-INTERNATIONAL.COM
Is it safe to go on a cruise? Will I need to wear a mask and what other protocols can I expect on board? Andy Harmer, managing director of Cruise Lines International Association (Clia) UK & Ireland Cruise sailings have restarted thanks to collaboration between the industry itself, government, health authorities and ports, and since lines resumed operations, nearly five million guests have enjoyed a cruise worldwide. Health measures both on and off ships now go beyond any other travel sector – for instance, our cruise line members have agreed to 100% testing of passengers and crew, with a negative test needed before boarding. The cruise industry was the first in the travel and tourism sector to commit to this level of testing worldwide. On domestic cruises, all lines must apply social distancing guidelines, consistent with shoreside health authority requirements. Guests must also adhere to the safety and wellbeing directions of the ship they are on, such as face coverings in some areas.
What do I need to know about testing, both on embarkation and before returning to the UK?
ON SALE
FEBRUARY 25
Edwina Lonsdale, managing director, Mundy Cruising Don’t assume you already know what is required, even if you’ve already done this once. Regulations can change at short notice, so check all requirements methodically: what type of test you need at each stage and the timings, both for the country you are flying into and your cruise line. Your professional cruise consultant will assist you. Most cruise lines will carry out a pre-embarkation lateral flow test at the port, and you may need one for your disembarkation port. This will normally be arranged on board, sometimes at a charge, so be sure to check the arrangements when you get your tickets. Make sure you also check the latest rules for returning to the UK and fill out your Passenger Locator Form in good time before you get to the airport for your return flight, as you may need to show it at check-in.
NEXT ISSUE... NILE CRUISE HIGHLIGHTS ANTARCTICA EXPEDITIONS LATEST CRUISE ADVICE
After so many cancelled holidays we’ve set our sights on the idea of an Antarctica cruise in 2022, but should we wait and book nearer the time? Martin Johnson, director and co-founder, Polar Routes A number of ships are running the current Antarctic season, so provided there are no further changes, you can travel right now! Be aware there are extra formalities such as vaccination requirements, PCR tests and entry forms for Argentina and Chile. But you will be well rewarded for any hassle as there are some incredible prices that I don’t think will ever be repeated. If the current travel climate is too much for you, the next season runs from November 2022 to March 2023. In fact, due to pent-up demand there are already availability issues at key times. Most operators still offer a flexible booking policy, so I recommend securing your dream 2022/23 Antarctic cruise as soon as possible. CRUISE-INTERNATIONAL.COM

Celebrity Cruises’ third Edge-class ship, Celebrity Beyond, can because Gwyneth Paltrow and her team at goop will be curating wellness programmes for the line. And it doesn’t stop there: renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen CBE (turn to page 114 for more) returns to add fresh colour palettes and style to the suites, the new two-storey Retreat Sundeck, The Rooftop Garden and more. The impressive Magic Carpet – a moving platform on the side of the ship that serves as a bar and restaurant – also returns on Celebrity Beyond.. RITZ-CARLTON YACHT COLLECTION The upscale hotel chain’s plunge into the world of cruising has been several years in the making after previous launches had to be postponed. But the first of three swanky superyachts, holding just 298 passengers in 149 sumptuous suites, is finally due to set sail this May. With five dining venues, a water sports marina, spa and fitness centre plus hot tubs and an aft deck infinity pool, Evrima claims to offer more space per passenger than other ships and a crew-to-guest ratio of 1 to 1.21. Its inaugural sailing from Lisbon to Barcelona marks the start of its maiden Mediterranean season, with itineraries of five to 11 nights, also featuring the Greek islands and Adriatic coast before departing for the Caribbean in November, where Evrima will transit the Panama Canal. 0800 048 8667; ritzcarltonyachtcollection.com

CRYSTAL CRUISES The upscale line enters 2022 having just launched its first expedition ship Crystal Endeavor and with its two ocean ships, Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity, cruising the Caribbean before moving to the Mediterranean for the summer. One of the high points is Crystal Serenity’s new 132-night Grand Voyage – featuring 82 ports (with 11 overnight stops) in 32 countries – which replaces its original world cruise, which departed from Miami earlier this month. It then spends early summer in the Mediterranean before relocating to Alaska and sailing to the US East Coast for autumn foliage voyages between New York and Quebec City. Crystal Symphony will spend the summer cruising the Mediterranean and northern Europe, with three cruises from Dover, before it sails to the Middle East in November for two cruises from Abu Dhabi. It then heads further east for next winter’s Asia programme. 020 7399 7601; crystalcruises.co.uk
SILVERSEA CRUISES New ships continue to roll in for this upmarket line, now owned by US cruise giant Royal Caribbean Cruises. Last summer marked inaugural voyages of Silversea’s latest additions – new flagship Silver Moon and expeditionary ship Silver Origin. These are followed by newcomer Silver Dawn, which embarks on its maiden Mediterranean season in March. The new ship will also debut pioneering wellness programme Otium, inspired by the ancient Romans and focusing not just on spa therapies, but an all-round experience with an emphasis on sleep, cuisine and indulgent bathing rituals. Silversea has introduced Grand Voyages this year, with three European itineraries on Silver Moon, followed by South America and more in 2023. New port calls include Rio Guajara in Brazil, Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura and Porto Novo in Benin, West Africa. Silversea is also adding to its all-inclusive offering, with shore excursions and private executive transfers now included for voyages from March 30 onwards. 0844 251 0837; silversea.com CRUISE-INTERNATIONAL.COM

SEADREAM YACHT CLUB “It’s yachting, not cruising” is the slogan of this boutique line, whose two mega-yachts SeaDream I and SeaDream II resemble floating hip hotels, carrying just 112 passengers in supreme comfort and attended to by 95 crew. Personalised service and luxury twists range from al fresco dining on deck and sleeping under the stars on its Balinese ‘dream beds’ to racing around on jet-bikes, one of the many diversions offered from the ships’ water sports platforms. Having celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, SeaDream’s yachts start 2022 in the Caribbean with new port calls in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, US and British Virgin Islands and Dutch Caribbean. The line also returns to South Florida for the first time in more than a decade with two round-trip sailings from Palm Beach. From May, both mega-yachts will spend the summer in Europe, sailing itineraries in the eastern and western Mediterranean. 0800 783 1373; seadream.co.uk

Described as one of the world’s most luxurious vessels, the line’s new flagship was unveiled in February 2020 and spearheaded RSSC’s return to operations last September from Southampton for its inaugural season. This year’s line-up of voyages includes 12 Spotlight themed sailings with topics ranging from ancestry and Broadway shows to wine and world wars, plus a new collection of cruises twinned with signature rail journeys, such as the Rocky Mountaineer, Venice Simplon-Orient-Express and Hiram Bingham train in South America. CELEBRITY CRUISES This spring marks the arrival of the line’s latest ground-breaking Edge-class ship Celebrity Beyond, which will sail its maiden voyage from Southampton in April, before spending its inaugural season in the Med. From here, Celebrity Beyond will cruise the French and Italian rivieras and Greek islands before moving to the Caribbean in autumn. This new vessel has the same standout features as its two sister ships: Celebrity Apex, which was named last year, and Celebrity Edge, which launched in 2018, both of which will also be based in Europe this summer. Their most notable feature is the ‘Magic Carpet’ moving platform on the side of the ship that serves as a bar and restaurant, but other cool hangouts include a chic rooftop garden and multi-terraced Sunset Bar across the aft. ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL This pioneering US line behind some of the biggest wow-factor ships in the world is hoping for a record-breaking year in 2022, propelled by its strongest-ever European line-up. Royal Caribbean plans to base eight ships in the region including the two newest additions to its fleet. Wonder of the Seas, at 6,988 guests, will take the title as the world’s largest cruise ship upon its March launch. It will be the fifth Oasis-class ship with many identical features to its sisters, though the top decks are redesigned and there’s a new Suite Neighbourhood in addition to favourites such as Central Park, the AquaTheater and Boardwalk. VIRGIN VOYAGES With 2020’s launch celebrations of its first ship Scarlet Lady snuffed out by the Covid-19 pandemic, entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson’s first foray into the cruising world didn’t have the best of starts. But now this kooky cruise line, which promises to throw cruising traditions overboard with drag queen brunches, rock-star-themed suites, the first tattoo parlour at sea and off-the-wall entertainment, is back with a vengeance. This marks the first full year of sailings for the adult-only cruise line, with two new ‘lady ships’: Valiant Lady in March, followed by Resilient Lady in August. The trio will bring their style of ‘rebellious luxe’ cruising to the English Channel with weekender cruises from Portsmouth and through the Mediterranean, along with exotic four and five-night sailings from Miami to the line’s private resort, the Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas, for beach sunset parties with guest DJs. 020 3003 4919; virginvoyages.com

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE Bright, bold and breezy, Carnival Cruise Line prides itself on the all-American flavour of its ships and buzzing party feel. Billed as the ‘fun’ cruise line, it’s a family favourite with water parks, ropes courses and even aerial bike tracks that loop around the deck. Last June saw the arrival of Carnival’s ground-breaking Mardi Gras ship, boasting the first rollercoaster at sea. It’s also the line’s first ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas, making it more environmentally friendly. However, 2022 promises to be a hallmark year for Carnival, which not only celebrates its 50th birthday but also welcomes new ship Carnival Celebration in November, to be followed by Carnival Jubilee in 2023. The line returns to Europe in the summer, and for the first time in nearly a decade will be back in Dover where Carnival Pride will offer departures to northern Europe, Scandinavia and around the UK. 0808 234 0680; carnival.co.uk
DISNEY CRUISE LINE This most magical of cruise lines piles on pixie dust with a cast of characters, led by Captain Mickey Mouse, that make Disney cruises ideal for families. The four classically styled ships resemble floating versions of Disney’s theme parks, with nautical decor and an upscale feel. But it’s not only about meeting Donald, Goofy and friends as there are pirate deck parties, glitzy stage shows and familyfriendly activities galore – though grown-ups needn’t feel marooned as there are stylish adult bars and restaurants too. The first of three new Disney LNG ships to join the fleet, the 4,000-passenger Disney Wish, debuts in June with a new onboard interactive family adventure and sailings to the line’s private island Castaway Cay from Port Canaveral, Florida. Disney Dream offers the line’s first sailings from Miami, while Disney Magic will be sailing in the Mediterranean from spring, before returning to Dover with four departures to Scandinavia and around the UK. 0800 171 2317; disneycruise.disney.go.com 46 Cruise Planner 2 02 2

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE NCL has long promoted its flexible ‘freestyle cruising’ with themed restaurants and innovative facilities that make this line a hit with families. Having pioneered go-kart racing tracks at sea and open-air laser tag, it is pushing the boat out with Norwegian Prima, the first of six new-generation ships, launching this summer. The 3,215-passenger newcomer promises the most outdoor space of any new ship, with an Ocean Boulevard wraparound promenade where guests can lounge in hammocks, spend evenings around firepits, swim to the horizon in two infinity pools or cross two glass bridges that give a feeling of walking over the ocean. Norwegian Prima’s maiden season starts in northern Europe this August, finishing with a 12-day transatlantic voyage from Southampton to New York. NCL will introduce Haifa in Israel as its new home port from November for Mediterranean sailings, and debut Fire and Ice voyages in June and October that combine Hawaii with Alaska. 0333 241 2319; ncl.com
MSC CRUISES

Italian in style and pedigree, MSC brings the spirit of la dolce vita to the cruising world as well as ambitious expansion plans. After new flagship MSC Seashore was named in November 2021 at the company’s Ocean Cay marine reserve in the Bahamas, sister ship MSC Seascape follows later this year. However, the arrival of MSC World Europa will be the real game-changer, claimed to be the company’s most innovative and environmentally advanced ship yet, with a futuristic hull design and carrying more than 6,700 guests. The LNG-powered ship, which promises a cosmopolitan melting pot of different zones and new concept dining, will spend next winter in the Arabian Gulf. Meanwhile, MSC starts this year with its first winter season of Red Sea cruises to Saudi Arabia until March, with departures from Jeddah, while summer Mediterranean sailings include new Tunisian port call La Goulette, for the capital Tunis. 020 3426 3010; msccruises.co.uk

FRED OLSEN CRUISE LINES Fred Olsen’s four-strong fleet has seen a significant change as two of its older ships, Boudicca and Black Watch, were retired after former Holland America Line ships Bolette and Borealis joined the line in 2020. This year will be the first time the fleet has resumed normal operations, with Borealis returning to Fred Olsen’s homeland, Norway, on Northern Lights sailings with departures around the British Isles and Nordics and flagship Bolette embarking on its first season of sailings from Southampton to northern Europe, the Italian coast, Norwegian fjords and Iceland. Balmoral returns to service from May, sailing predominantly from Newcastle to the Norwegian fjords, Orkney and Shetland Isles and Scandinavia, while Braemar resumes from Edinburgh in July with cruises to Ireland and the Norwegian fjords. Other highlights include visiting Monaco during the motor-racing Grand Prix, calling at Amsterdam for the Floriade Expo and repeating Braemar’s record-breaking transit of the Corinth Canal on a Greek Islands voyage in May 2023. 0800 084 1532; fredolsencruises.com

AMBASSADOR CRUISE LINE One of a clutch of new names to surface during the pandemic, Ambassador Cruise Line rose phoenix-like from the ashes of failed Essex-based brand Cruise & Maritime Voyages last summer – the first new British cruise line in more than a decade. With former CMV executives at the helm, this newbie line plans to fill the void left by its predecessor in offering good-value, traditional cruises to British customers in the 50-plus bracket, with departures from Tilbury. There are many similarities, but Ambassador promotes itself as a little more upscale, offering “premium value”. Its grand launch is planned for April with a maiden voyage to Hamburg on 1,400-passenger ship Ambience, whose facilities include five restaurants, two cafes, nine lounges, two swimming pools and a spa. Ambassador’s first full year of operation will see 33 cruises to more than 90 ports with sailings to the Baltic, Greenland, Scandinavia, Canary Islands and the Caribbean among others. 0808 102 0129; ambassadorcruiseline.com

The traditions and heritage of this stately line make it the closest you will get to reliving cruising’s Golden Age, especially on the transatlantic crossings of classic ocean liner Queen Mary 2, which resumed in late 2021. The voyages to New York are followed in 2022 by new European short breaks and winter Caribbean sailings. Queen Victoria returns to sailing in April with a variety of cruises to Scandinavia, along the British coastline and the Iberian Peninsula, while between February and June, Queen Elizabeth will offer an ‘Escapes’ programme of 17 new departures. These include a voyage in search of the Northern Lights, cruises to the Canary Islands and a 43-night Grand Voyage across the Atlantic and through the Panama Canal to Alaska. SILVERSEA cruises Having debuted its newest expedition ship Silver Origin in the Galapagos Islands last summer and converted classic ocean ship Silver Wind to an ice-class expedition vessel capable of handling extreme conditions, Silversea powers into 2022 with a four-strong expeditionary fleet. In March, the luxury line’s first European Grand Voyage departs from Athens on Silver Moon for a 91-day odyssey, visiting 71 destinations in 22 countries including Istanbul, Sorrento, Bordeaux and St Petersburg before finishing in Stockholm. Silver Explorer starts this year in Antarctica, having commenced its winter schedule of voyages from the new port of Puerto Williams in Chile last November. It then sails to the Indian Ocean for a new expedition voyage from Zanzibar to Mahé, exploring some of the most beautiful islands of the Seychelles, before spending the summer in Australia’s rugged Kimberley region. 0844 251 0837; silversea.com
VIKING EXPEDITIONS This year marks another milestone for this established river and ocean cruise specialist when its Viking Expeditions arm is launched with two new ships. When the Australian line’s ship Greg Mortimer launched in 2019, it was the first passenger ship with a revolutionary X-Bow, an inverted bow that ensures a smoother passage and reduces emissions. This spring it is due to be joined by sister ship Sylvia Earle, which has been built to the same design and embarks on a maiden season visiting eclectic destinations championed by marine conservationist Dr Sylvia Earle, after whom the ship is named. The 132-passenger newcomer promises to push expedition cruising boundaries with itineraries to Alaska and Haida Gwaii, the Northwest Passage, Raja Ampat, West Papua and the Russian Far East. Dr Earle joins an expedition to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska in June. HURTIGRUTEN Expedition cruises have come closer to home thanks to Hurtigruten’s new year-round departures from the UK to Norway, alleviating the need to fly. The first 15-night Northern Lights and Fjords Expedition to the North Cape departed Dover last September on the 528-passenger Maud and the schedule continues into spring, when British Isles sailings plus Norwegian fjords and Midnight Sun voyages are added to the mix. The Nordic line predicts 2022 will be one of its most adventurous years yet with its first cruises to Africa’s West Coast and year-round explorations of the Galapagos, along with sailings to the Canary Islands. Russia also makes its first appearance with a 17-night voyage to the White Sea in October, while two epic Pole to Pole sailings of 93 days and 66 days depart this summer. CRYSTAL EXPEDITION CRUISES This upmarket line made waves with its first ‘expedition yacht’, hailed as a game-changer for the luxury it brings to the planet’s remotest locations. The 200-passenger all-suite Crystal Endeavor brims with opulence, from butler service and a 1:1 staff to guest ratio to six dining venues – including Japanese and Italian speciality restaurants – a swimming pool and spa. The Polar Class ship also has a two-passenger submersible for underwater exploration. Crystal Endeavor’s journey to Antarctica last November was the first of eight round-trips to the White Continent from Ushuaia. PONANT Having welcomed swish Polar expedition vessel Le Commandant Charcot to its fleet last September, this upscale French line invites guests to experience Antarctica and the Arctic like never before. The new ship’s debut summer season of 10 sailings includes voyages to the North Pole and Greenland’s northeast coast, and through the Northwest Passage. The hybrid ship, described as the company’s most ground-breaking so far, is powered by electric and LNG (liquefied natural gas) to reduce its environmental footprint. This summer, Ponant is offering more than 150 sailings on 10 of its vessels, with new itineraries including a Landscapes and Islands of the North Atlantic cruise from Bordeaux to Dublin on L’Austral and Ancient Civilisations of the Eastern Mediterranean aboard Le Bellot, which sails from Aqaba to Valletta. The boutique line’s refurbished South Pacific ship, Paul Gauguin, which it acquired in 2019, will sail five signature routes through French Polynesia. 0808 234 3802; uk.ponant.com
SEABOURN This luxury mega-yacht line has dabbled in adventure cruising since 2013 when it converted one of its ocean ships, Seabourn Quest, to ice class with a strengthened hull. But April marks Seabourn’s emergence as a fully fledged adventure line when its first purpose-built expedition ship, Seabourn Venture, departs Greenwich on its inaugural voyage around the British Isles before spending summer in the Arctic. The 264-passenger all-suite ship has two custom-built submarines that hold six guests (and they come with a handy champagne chiller), along with kayaks and Zodiac boats. The first ship, Havila Capella, commenced sailings last December and three more ships – Havila Polaris, Havila Castor and Havila Pollux – are set to follow this year. The 640-passenger vessels showcase crisp Nordic design and local cuisine, and claim to offer the most spacious cabins on the route, along with an observation lounge, fitness room and on-deck hot tub. This year the 40-guest Lord of the Highlands joins the Hebridean fold, offering a convivial house party-style ambience on sailings along the Caledonian Canal and Scotland’s Western Isles. In addition to the popular islands of Mykonos and Santorini, Celestyal is returning to tiny Milos, northern Greek city Thessaloniki and Kusadasi in Turkey. Not only was it the first ship to set sail, kicking off a whole summer of UK cruising and signalling the sector’s restart, but it was also such an incredible ship with so many innovative onboard features, you couldn’t help but feel inspired to get back out on the high seas. Now, you’ll have the chance to see it for yourself as MSC Virtuosa returns to Southampton for another summer of allinclusive sailings this year – and we’ve teamed up with MSC Cruises to give one lucky reader and their guest a chance to get on board.

WIN A CRUISE TO NORWAY
MSC Cruises is giving away a seven-night holiday for two adults on MSC Virtuosa, departing from Southampton on June 11, 2022, and sailing to the Norwegian fjords. With an easy embarkation at Southampton, you’ll spend a day at sea exploring what the ship has to offer: from the MSC Starship Club that features a bar manned by Rob, the only robotic bartender at sea, to the longest LED Dome on the ocean sitting overhead an indoor promenade of shops, restaurants and beautiful boutiques. Plus you’ll find five pools, a spa and many other facilities, and you can sleep easy knowing it’s one of the most environmentally friendly ships at sea with energy efficiency measures and much-reduced emissions. Once you reach Norwegian shores, some of the highlights include stopping off at Hellesylt, a tiny town on the edge of the magnificent Geiranger fjord. There,

you can journey up the Eagle Route towards the Seven Sisters Waterfall, enjoying impressive views across the fjord on the way. Alternatively, visit the Briksdal glacier, the subject of much scientific study thanks to its unusual erosion patterns, which is bounded by a picturesque glacial lake. Next, it’s a scenic journey through the Sognefjord, the longest of all the Norwegian fjords, to Flåm, tucked away amid the forested mountains. Take the famous train journey from Flåm to Kjosfossen on the Bergen line for views across these verdant natural landscapes, full of deep gorges, plunging waterfalls and tiny little mountain farms clinging on to the sides of the slopes. The ship then heads south to Kristiansand, full of art galleries and striking architecture, before returning to the UK.
HOW TO ENTER For your chance to win, visit the Cruise International website to answer the question below before the competition closes at 11.59pm on February 28, 2022. What is the name of the robotic bartender in the Starship Club who serves up drinks from MSC Cruises’ all-inclusive drinks package?

he British Isles led the resurgence of cruising last summer, as travellers keen to be on the water again jumped at the chance to bag a spot on the fi rst sailings to depart the moment travel restrictions were lifted. New ship MSC Virtuosa set sail from Southampton on May 17, 2021, Viking Venus launched just a few days later, then a host of other lines followed suit in setting up round-Britain sailings over the summer, exclusively for UK guests. P&O Cruises’ new flagship Iona even sailed around its namesake Scottish island in the Inner Hebrides on its maiden voyage. Yet it seems that wasn’t enough to sate our appetite for sailings closer to home, with many more British Isles cruises slated for this year as we seek to make the most of the treasures on our doorstep. The classic round-Britain route takes in the big cities, so if you fancy walking the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, tracing the footsteps of the Fab Four at The Beatles Story in Liverpool or exploring the origins of the Titanic in Belfast – where locals will proclaim “she was alright when she left here” – there are plenty of options, from Emerald Princess and Norwegian Dawn to new British-owned Ambassador Cruise Line.
But if you want to explore smaller spots, look out for sailings that stop off at St Peter Port, where the cobbled streets and sedate pace of the Guernsey capital are an antidote to the bustle of bigger cities. Or try the Isles of Scilly, a highlight of Crystal Endeavor’s spring sailing from Greenwich, when the famed gardens of Tresco Abbey will be awash with colourful blooms; and explore Staffa’s wildlife – think puffi ns, razorbills, guillemots and more – on Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ scenic isles sailings. The Scottish islands still hold sway for many lines, not least small luxury operator Hebridean Island Cruises, which has expanded its fleet with the acquisition of 40-passenger Lord of the Highlands. It will be sailing a series of five and seven-night voyages along the Caledonian Canal, Great Glen and around the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, from April to October. Meanwhile, Saga is setting its sights to the west with a range of Ireland cruises starting in May on board Spirit of Adventure, taking in fishing towns such as Cobh – another spot with Titanic connections – and Killybegs in Donegal, complete with sweeping views of the rugged scenery along the west coast’s Wild Atlantic Way.

t a time when long-haul travel can feel a little daunting, the short hop across to the Continent has never seemed more appealing. Whether you’re setting off from Southampton on an ocean voyage calling at Honfleur and Le Havre in northern France, or embarking on a river cruise along one of Europe’s grandest waterways, there’s plenty to discover within easy reach of home. It can be a great way to get a taste of cruising, as guests on Virgin Voyages’ Long Weekender trips from Portsmouth to Bruges (from Zeebrugge) will no doubt find out when the line starts three-night mini-cruises on new ship Valiant Lady in April. But for river cruise fans, 2022 is all about the convergence of two once-in-a-decade events. First there’s Floriade, the international garden exhibition held every 10 years in the Netherlands, set to run from April 14 to October 9. Saga River Cruises will be visiting the Expo on Spirit of the Rhine, a new river ship that launched last autumn, pairing it with trips to the flower-
filled Keukenhof Gardens and Belgium’s Meise Botanic Gardens, all in the company of Gardeners’ World regular Pippa Greenwood. Then there’s Oberammergau, the passion play staged in the German village of the same name. It was first acted out in 1634, after a plague hit the village, which led residents to declare that if God spared them from the worst ravages of the disease, they would perform it in deference every decade. There were no more deaths, and nearly 400 years later even a Covid-induced delay can’t stop these villagers from putting on the 2,000-person play. Take your pick of Danube sailings from May to October, as many include excursions to witness this spectacle. Add to that a roster of perennially popular rivers such as the Rhine, Main and Moselle; hotel barges in northern France and wine cruises in Bordeaux; leisurely departures along the verdant valleys of the Douro or hiking and cycling trips through Germany’s lushest landscapes, and there’s no end to the delights that await just across the Channel. THE MEDITERRANEAN
L
ong, leisurely days in the Med encompass everything there is to love about travelling by sea, waking up each day in a place even more extraordinary than the last. You can start off in Barcelona, snapping as many selfies as you can muster in front of La Sagrada Familia or in Parc Guell; sail to Civitavecchia for a tour of Rome’s Colosseum and a gelato stop on the Spanish Steps; then carry on to Santorini to witness the world’s most spectacular sunset across the caldera – and all while only having to unpack once. New tall-ship line Tradewind Voyages has chosen the Med and surrounding region for its first season of summer sailings, and will work its way from Palma, where it will be based from May, through Italy and Croatia before finishing the season in Greece in October.

Likewise, these waters will be the first to see new ship Celebrity Beyond in action when it sets off on its maiden western European cruise on April 27, from Southampton to Barcelona via Bordeaux, Bilbao, Lisbon and Seville (Cadiz). Italian-owned MSC Cruises has also ramped up its presence in the Med, with 14 ships – its largest-ever offering at more than half the fleet – sailing 40 itineraries this year. There are very few corners of the Med they don’t cover, but highlights include MSC Meraviglia homeporting in Barcelona and sailing to Cannes, Genoa, La Spezia, Civitavecchia and Palma de Majorca. MSC Opera, Splendida, Seaview and Seaside will all be based in Genoa, taking in Marseille, Sicily, Valletta in Malta and the recently
reintroduced port of La Goulette in Tunisia along the way. To the east, Adriatic ports such as Split and Dubrovnik have established themselves as firm favourites on the cruise scene, mixing ancient history and medieval architecture with a modern cult following thanks to their starring roles in Game of Thrones. But up-and-coming spots such as Croatian city Zadar, coastal town Kotor in Montenegro and Haifa in Israel are worth exploring if you get the chance. Saga’s Spirit of Adventure is set to stop at Zadar in Croatia and Ravenna in Italy on its epic 22-night Croatia & Cities of Central Mediterranean voyage, taking in many of the less obvious – but no less impressive – jewels of the Med. NORWAY & NORTHERN LIGHTS
F
ew places can claim to be as awe-inspiring by night as they are by day, but Norway is the exception that proves the rule. You can meander along its quiet coastline, tracing the ins and outs of glacier-carved fjords where sheer-sided mountains rush down to a glassy sea, then bundle up by night for another of nature’s most spectacular shows, the Northern Lights. Better yet, if you’re not a fan of flying, there are a host of ex-UK departures that will bring you to Norway’s shores without stepping foot inside an airport, so you’ll have your sea legs by the time you reach the big-ticket sights. It’s the chosen location for P&O Cruises’ Iona this summer, with Norwegian fjords itineraries out of Southampton starting from April. Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has also made its return to the Norwegian coast, sprinkling a series of Northern Lights and Norwegian fjords sailings on Borealis – whose smaller capacity means it can travel through size-limited spots like Lysefjord for a glimpse of the famous Pulpit Rock – in between departures to other Nordic gems including Iceland and the Faroe Islands. This region is set to be so popular that there’s even a new player on the scene. Norwegian-owned cruise line Havila Voyages launched its first ship, Havila Capella, last December, and will be adding another three to the fleet this year, sailing between Bergen and Kirkenes in northern Norway. It will join more established players including Hurtigruten, Holland America Line and Viking in mixing Norway’s natural beauty spots with tours of charming cities such as Bergen, Trondheim and Tromso. The scenery is guaranteed to be beautiful, but there’s more to these sailings than just admiring the view. Go dog sledding across the snowy Arctic tundra, try fishing for king crab or tuck into your first taste of cloudberries in the Lofoten islands, meet local people for an insight into the Sami culture, or experience the ethereal beauty of a midnight concert inside Tromso’s Arctic Cathedral – just as magical whether it’s under the Midnight Sun or the Northern Lights.

J
ourneying beyond the reaches of the Arctic Circle offers a glimpse into the furthest extremes of the Earth and, unlike its southern counterpart of Antarctica, into the lives of the people who call these places home. You’ll see polar bears padding quietly across a vast frozen expanse, ready to strike ferociously at the fi rst sign of prey; spot brightly coloured flowers hardy enough to bloom amid the most unforgiving of landscapes; and marvel at the glassy fjords of Greenland or the gushing geysers and lava-spewing volcanoes of Iceland, dubbed ‘the land of fi re and ice’ for good reason. But go beyond the natural beauty of this region and you’ll also meet people who have adapted their way of life to flourish in extraordinary conditions. Cruise along Greenland’s west coast and you can speak to some of the friendly families living in the rainbow-hued houses that dot its shores, many descended from a mix of Inuit ancestors and Norwegian settlers. Or stop in at Svalbard’s biggest town, Longyearbyen – the world’s northernmost settlement, with a population of just 2,400 – where it’s impossible (officially, at least) to die, be buried or give birth, with all pregnant women required to fly back to the mainland prior to their due date. Yet the locals have still managed to set up a brewery and a chocolatier’s shop, so they’ve got their priorities in order. Quark Expeditions will be deploying its newest flagship, Ultramarine, in the region in May, while Holland America Line is due to return in the same month. The latter’s itineraries include Norway, Spitsbergen and Iceland on board Volendam, and the popular 35-day Voyage of the Vikings aboard Zaandam, which will sail roundtrip from Boston to Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, the Netherlands and the UK in July. Saga is due to sail a Spitsbergen’s Arctic Landscape voyage on Spirit of Adventure in July, crossing the Arctic Circle to the rugged landscapes of the Svalbard archipelago. Hurtigruten, meanwhile, has long served this region with a wide array of itineraries visiting Iceland, Greenland, Svalbard, Norway and more, but it has also added Russia’s White Sea to its roster this year. A 17-day expedition cruise this October will depart from Bergen, sailing north along the Norwegian coast via the Lofoten Islands and the North Cape, before reaching Russian shores to visit the Unesco-listed Solovetsky Islands and the country’s northern cultural capital, Arkhangelsk.

altic cruises are set to soar this year as many of us seek out new and interesting destinations that don’t mean travelling too far from home. With just a short flight or even a sailing from a UK port, you can find yourself immersed in the art, architecture and enchanting capitals of northern Europe, discovering treasures you didn’t even know were practically on your doorstep. Stroll the medieval streets of Estonian capital Tallinn, explore the Unesco-listed Old Town of Riga in Latvia, cycle the shorelines and green spaces of Helsinki, or make a beeline for the Abba Museum in waterfront city Stockholm – all in one easy journey. You’ll also have a chance to marvel at the Little Mermaid statue watching over Copenhagen’s harbour, inspired by the timeless stories of Hans Christian Andersen. 96

In fact, many of the ports of call on a Baltic cruise feel like stepping straight into the pages of a fairytale, with grand palaces and turret-topped castles at every turn. Yet nowhere evokes that storybook feel more than St Petersburg, where the spirit of the tsars still infuses the landmarks and legacy of the former Russian capital. Tap into high culture with a night at the ballet or a visit to the impressive Hermitage Museum – both perennially popular shore excursions for many lines – visit the lavish Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood or cruise along the canals that earned the city its ‘Venice of the North’ nickname. Many lines offer ex-UK sailings, so you don’t even have to head through an airport. They include the new MSC Virtuosa, which launched in the UK last year and will return to Southampton again this summer, offering journeys of between seven and 14 nights to
the Norwegian fjords, St Petersburg, Sweden and Denmark. New UK-based company Ambassador Cruise Line is offering Baltic sailings out of Tilbury in May and July, while Saga’s Spirit of Discovery is sailing from Dover in July to unusual ports around the Gulf of Bothnia, the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea, including Kemi in Finland, Visby in Sweden and Skagen in Denmark. It’s an ideal chance to explore the islands around Stockholm, the windswept beaches of the Jutland peninsula, and go on shore excursions to the likes of Gothenburg and Gdansk. If you’re happy to hop on a short flight, there are even more options to choose from. he reopening of the US and Canadian borders last autumn was greeted with an outpouring of joy thanks to the many cultural, historical and family ties that stretch across the Atlantic Ocean. Experts are predicting North America will experience a boom among British travellers this year, so whether you want to cross the ocean in classic cruise style aboard a Cunard liner to New York or look out for whales, turtles, dolphins, manta rays and more in California’s Sea of Cortez, there’s an option to suit you just across the pond. Alaska is the top choice for anyone celebrating a much-delayed birthday or anniversary as its spectacular scenery and varied wildlife are sure to make any special occasion even more memorable. This year, you’ll find Holland America Line marking an impressive 75 years of serving the region, while Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth returns to operate seven to 15-night voyages round-trip from Vancouver. That means you get to spend a night or two enjoying British Columbia’s biggest city, going for a stroll through Stanley Park to admire its First Nations totem poles or a cycle ride along the world’s longest uninterrupted waterfront path, followed by a grazing lunch at Granville Island Public Market where the stalls are piled high with cheese, chocolate and a host of other tasty treats. Out on the water, there’s a chance to explore this remote US state from the best possible vantage point. Highlights include Glacier Bay National Park, where the views sum up everything you’d expect of Alaska, with the 21-mile-long Margerie Glacier and mile-wide John Hopkins Glacier calving into an ice-filled sea, backed only by blue skies and jagged mountain ridges dusted with snow. Wildlife abounds at every turn, with brown bears stalking the shoreline, humpback whales breaching in the glassy waters surrounding the ship, and nearly 300 bird species flitting through the skies, from rubycrowned kinglets and tufted puffins to oystercatchers, kittiwakes and the state’s famous bald eagle. Returning to Vancouver also opens up the possibility of catching the scenic Rocky Mountaineer train, a popular add-on to Alaska cruises that will restart journeys to Lake Louise, Banff and Jasper from April 25. The rail operator has another trick up its sleeve this year, with the first full season of

its new US route, Rockies to the Red Rocks, which departs from Denver, Colorado, for a two-day scenic journey tracing the route of the Colorado River through steep-sided canyons and along desert cliffs to the red-rock landscapes of Moab, Utah. Inside Passage sailings are among the highlights for the likes of Crown Princess and Discovery Princess out of Seattle, plus Royal Princess from Vancouver, interspersed with trips along the sunkissed California coast and as far as the volcanic islands of Hawaii. That just goes to show the range of North American cruises on offer, from paddle wheelers along the Mississippi to cross-border journeys in the Great Lakes region, where Viking is set to add new departure dates both this year and next on voyages from Lake Michigan through the Soo Locks to Canada’s Lake Superior. There’s just as much variety over on the eastern seaboard, where cruises head south from New York towards the heritage-filled shores of Virginia, South Carolina and Florida – perhaps with a sunny diversion to Bermuda along the way – or north via Martha’s Vineyard and Boston to the Canadian Maritimes. There, lighthouse trails and surprisingly affordable lobster restaurants dot the coastline of Nova Scotia, where must-sees include Peggy’s Cove for its windswept scenery and the Bay of Fundy for the biggest tides in the world. Carry on via the Gulf of St Lawrence past Prince Edward Island, the setting for Anne of Green Gables, to spot beluga, minke, fin, humpback and even blue whales on your way to Quebec City. The only walled city north of Mexico and boasting some of the oldest streets on the continent, top sights include the Plains of Abraham and the oftphotographed Chateau Frontenac, now a Fairmont hotel and the perfect spot for a post-cruise stay to fully appreciate the city’s historic highlights and French-inspired ambience.

CARIBBEAN
T
he Caribbean is a hit for cruise ships big and small, and with limited sailings in some other winter-sun destinations this season, it’s not too late to bag a last-minute booking to enjoy its clear, sun-warmed waters and the chance to explore a host of islands, each with its own distinct character, all in one go. There’s plenty of choice, from Virgin Voyages’ new adult-only vessel Scarlet Lady to the huge resort-style ships of Royal Caribbean, through to smaller vessels from the likes of SeaDream Yacht Club – whose 56-cabin yachts visit places that larger ships can’t reach such as Canouan in the Grenadines and Soufriere, Saint Lucia – and The RitzCarlton Yacht Collection due to launch later this year. Celebrity Apex shifted to the Caribbean from a few introductory sailings in the Greek islands and is due to come back for an encore in November, while sister ships including Celebrity Reflection and Celebrity Constellation are similarly sandwiching their year with a mix of eastern, western and southern Caribbean sailings. The region will also be the first to welcome P&O Cruises’ new ship, Arvia, after a maiden voyage in the Canaries, with Barbados as its home port. Celebrity chef Shivi Ramoutar, known for her contemporary Caribbean cuisine, has been drafted in as a Local Food Hero to stamp her signature dishes on restaurants including Taste 360 and The Beach House, so there will be plenty of Caribbean flavour both on board and ashore. Yet some of the most exciting developments are not in the ships sailing through but in the private cruise lineowned islands that draw visitors seeking no-holds-barred escapism. Royal Caribbean set the standard with CocoCay, a playground for every age featuring the tallest waterslide in North America, the Bahamas’ largest freshwater pool (complete with swim-up bar) and floating cabanas. Then MSC Cruises got in on the act with Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, which opened in December 2019 but only had its official inauguration with the naming ceremony of MSC Seashore late last year. Behind its white sandy beaches, water sports, spa and late-night entertainment (including a Bahamian Junkanoo parade, light show and DJ beach party), there’s a mammoth conservation effort at work. The 64-square-mile marine reserve includes a laboratory and coral nursery areas, helping to restore coral reefs in the Bahamas to a healthy state by propagating more resilient varieties, and is visited on MSC itineraries in the region, including those of new ship MSC Seascape when it launches at the end of the year. Last but not least, Virgin Voyages has introduced a private island experience at beach club Bimini, also in the Bahamas, where you can dive along reefs and shipwrecks teeming with life, take an open-air tram tour through North Bimini to explore the islands’ history, or sit back with a cocktail in hand and palm trees overhead while seas in a hundred shades of blue lap at your feet – the true essence of the Caribbean.

he sheer scale of South and Central America – spanning everything from the tropical rainforests of Costa Rica to the furthest reaches of the continent at Cape Horn, via verdant banks along the Amazon and one-of-a-kind wildlife in the Galapagos Islands – means there’s no end of experiences on offer both by land and water. A cruise is a great way to cover its vast distances without the hassle of overland travel, plus there’s no better opportunity to compare the climates and cultures of this huge, diverse region than by pitching up in a new port of call each day, ready to explore. That’s why it was chosen by the newly relaunched Swan Hellenic brand as one of the fi rst spots for its ‘cultural expedition cruises’, operating a range of 10 to 15-day itineraries between February and April on Minerva with a reprise to follow from October alongside new ship Vega. Choose from drifting through the icy expanse of the Chilean fjords, spotting Magellanic penguins and more marine life along the way, exploring the Nazca lines etched into the deserts of southern Peru or taking guided tours to remote ruins left behind by the Zapotec people of southern Mexico. The choice extends beyond the destination at hand to the style of cruising you favour, with both larger ships as well as boutique vessels on hand. Scenic will bring its recently updated ‘discovery yacht’, Scenic Eclipse, to the Mexican Riviera, the wildlife-fi lled national parks of Costa Rica, the vibrant cities of Lima and Valparaiso and the glacier-carved fjords of Tierra del Fuego from September, returning early in 2023 after a season in Antarctica. Yet the big bucket-list items don’t end there, and for many the pristine ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands is the big draw. This archipelago inspired Charles Darwin’s theories in On the Origin of Species and has gone on to inspire several cruise lines to create boutique vessels specifically to sail here, including Silversea Cruises’ Silver Origin and Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Flora. Adventure cruise line Aqua Expeditions will also be sending its newest vessel, the superyacht-style Aqua Mare, which holds just 16 guests, to explore the islands’ eastern and western reaches on seven and 14-night journeys starting from May 6. With two naturalists on board and excursions capped at eight guests per group, everyone will get a good vantage point to spot giant tortoises, iguanas, fur seals, frigatebirds, blue-footed boobies and more, on this truly spectacular sailing.
Wildlife sightings are practically guaranteed on an Antarctica trip

ntarctica is the ultimate in expedition cruising, and is seeing a real boom in interest right now as we emerge from the travel restrictions imposed by the pandemic and seek out bigger and more elaborate adventures to satisfy our pent-up wanderlust. Expedition cruising has been on the rise for some time, leading many established ocean and river cruise lines to expand into the polar regions by launching vessels tricked out with everything from helicopters and submarines to citizen science labs on board. But that trend is only set to grow in 2022 with many travel experts predicting that this will be the year of the big-ticket, bucket-list trip. Unlike many other adventures in nature, wildlife sightings are all but guaranteed on an Antarctica cruise. You’re sure to see enough penguins to learn how to distinguish between colonies of king, emperor, gentoo, chinstrap and Adelie varieties, especially if you choose a longer voyage that takes in South Georgia as well as the White Continent itself. You’ll cruise past leopard seals prowling the shoreline, elephant seals harrumphing from the rocks or fur seals lounging on passing ice floes, and spot killer, humpback and minke whales skimming through the waves. But you can also turn your attention to the skies to spot wandering albatrosses with their vast wingspans, various types of petrels, Antarctic fulmars and many more seabird species that make a habitat here despite the harsh conditions. While the wildlife remains eternal, there are plenty of new ships taking to the shores of Antarctica now cruises have resumed. Ponant’s latest vessel, Le Commandant Charcot, spent its inaugural season in Antarctica and has 13 different itineraries on offer for winter 2022-23. Scenic’s new ‘discovery yacht’, Scenic Eclipse, has been plying the waters around Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands (Las Malvinas), and will be venturing into the Weddell Sea on a new itinerary in December 2022, where you can go kayaking or Zodiac cruising past Weddell seals or see them from above with a helicopter journey. With countless new ships – among them, Quark Expeditions’ Ultramarine, Swan Hellenic’s Minerva, Viking Octantis and Polaris, Crystal Endeavor and Aurora Expeditions’ Sylvia Earle – joining established operators such as Silversea Cruises, Hurtigruten, National Geographic Expeditions and many others, there are more opportunities than ever to finally tick Antarctica off your travel wish list.

ruise itineraries range from glitz and glamour in the skyscraper-filled cities of the Arabian Gulf through to safari drives and visits to vibrant local communities along the coast of West Africa in this diverse region, meaning it truly can turn its hand to any kind of holiday. Dubai remains a top choice for guaranteed sunshine year-round and is host until March to the delayed Expo 2020, which takes place every five years as a showcase for the best innovations from around the world. MSC Cruises’ MSC Virtuosa was christened in the emirate and spent its first winter serving destinations around the Arabian Sea. New vessel MSC World Europa will follow suit this December with winter sun cruises from Dubai to Abu Dhabi – home to the opulent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – and onward to Sir Bani Yas Island, Dammam in Saudi Arabia and Doha, the capital of Qatar. CRUISE-INTERNATIONAL.COM
Qatar is also going to be its home – along with many other cruise ships playing host to fans – during the Fifa World Cup, which takes place in November and December, giving footie followers a taste of the cruise experience and putting the industry on a global stage regardless of the ups and downs on the pitch. Emerald Cruises has chosen this region as its host for the maiden voyage of new superyacht Emerald Azzurra, which departs from Aqaba in Jordan for its eight-day The Best of the Red Sea itinerary in March. The Nile is also set to take centre stage with the release of Kenneth Branagh’s latest update of Poirot mystery Death on the Nile in February, bringing a new lease of life to the ancient temples of Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and more. The most dedicated Agatha Christie fans can even stay at the Old Cataract Hotel, now a Sofitel property, where the author penned her famous novel while looking out
at the white-sailed felucca boats going to and fro along this ancient waterway. There are a host of other sailings in this region – from the warm waters of the Indian Ocean where Ponant’s Le Bougainville, Le Bellot and Le Jacques Cartier traverse the shores of the Seychelles, Madagascar and elsewhere, to more adventurous itineraries along the coast of Africa. They include Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ round-trips from Cape Town on board Seven Seas Voyager, which takes in the wildlife-rich region of Walvis Bay in Namibia along with Durban and Richards Bay in South Africa, an ideal gateway to the Zulu culture of KwaZulu-Natal. Hurtigruten also offers a number of voyages to the Cape Verde and Bissagos Islands as part of trips to the coast of Senegal, the Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, with excursions that offer guests the opportunity to understand more about local culture along the coast. ASIA & AUSTRALASIA hile most of Asia and the Antipodes have been off-limits since borders shut down at the start of the pandemic, signs are pointing to a more positive year for travel to this part of the world, which is good news given the range of cruise experiences on offer. You can stroll the streets of Singapore, marvelling at a mosaic of cultures that sees towering skyscrapers sit side-by-side with old shophouses and diverse culinary traditions drawn from centuries of settlers, then depart on a port-packed ocean cruise around Asia. Or for a complete contrast, voyage along the lesser-travelled Brahmaputra river, seeing the real life of small Indian villages play out along its riverbanks. The Mekong is a perennially popular route, and will play host to APT’s new ship, Mekong Serenity, from July, alongside the purpose-built 80-passenger Viking Saigon, set to debut in August. Interest in Japan is on a high, with Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess due to restart sailings combining it with South Korea in April, while Celebrity Solstice will also be sailing Japan itineraries starting in October. If you’re looking further ahead, Azamara has beefed up its shore excursions for 2023, with new options including a two-night tour in Hong Kong visiting the Nan Lian Garden and dining out on dim sum, and a four-night extension on land to see the Great Wall of China. In the Oceania region, cruising is a great way to pack in plenty of top sights, from Sydney’s famous harbour or Melbourne’s trendy laneways to the serene waters of Milford Sound or the vibrant nightlife of Auckland. Princess Cruises is set to station six ships in Australian and New Zealand home ports in 2023, and has unveiled two new cruise-tours visiting the Australian Outback including Uluru, and the highlights of Darwin, Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. It doesn’t end there: carry on to the South Pacific for dreamy days spent skimming across turquoise waters, pitching up at verdant, forest-blanketed islands or swimming in secluded white-sand bays. Paul Gauguin Cruises is the best-known name here, offering itineraries of between seven and 16 nights exploring Tahiti, the Society Islands, the Marquesas, Fiji, the Cook Islands and more. For an authentic local alternative, Aranui Cruises offers journeys on passenger-freighter Aranui 5, including themed departures in February and April exploring the works of Herman Melville, art by impressionist painter Paul Gauguin and the journeys of explorer Captain Cook. But if you’re after something more luxurious, Oceania Cruises will also be returning to Tahiti with 10-day round-trip cruises from Papeete to Moorea, Rangiroa and Bora Bora starting in March on refitted ship Regatta, so you can sail the region in style.

Kelly Hoppen The trailblazing designer and Dragons’ Den regular earned a CBE for promoting creativity in British business, and is now turning her eye to new ship Celebrity Beyond further advances in technology, there are increasingly few limitations to what is possible. The boundaries of luxury and our expectations of what travel offshore can offer have grown infinitely.
It would be impossible to narrow down my favourite destination – I love travelling and exploring new places. Some of my favourite holidays have been in Mauritius, relaxing with family on white sandy beaches; or in Positano with friends, taking in the breathtaking views, delicious food and brilliant shopping. Japan is high up on my bucket list – I’d love to take the time to explore the sights and the culture, both in the cities and the rural areas.
I love the beach and being able to unwind in the sun; it definitely helps me to find my centre of gravity again when city life becomes a little too hectic. Exercising on holiday may sound burdensome for some, but I find it meditative. It clears my head, helps me to focus and sets me up for whatever adventures we have planned for the day. The item I couldn’t live without when I travel would definitely be books. There is something about reading on holiday that makes it more relaxing than anywhere else. Also, making sure my iPhone is stocked up with some great getaway playlists is essential – music is always a must-have travel companion.
When it comes to a city break, I want to be inspired to explore and delve into the culture, so it’s always enticing to see glimpses of the city reflected in the artwork and some thoughtfully curated pieces. A well-designed space should adapt to your mood throughout the day, from a terrace design that

It has been such an exciting collaboration with Celebrity so far, and I think we share the same vision when it comes to redefining luxury sea travel and seeing where we can take it from here. While I’ve always remained true to my signature style philosophy of balance, linearity and neutrals, cruise design has been a wonderful opportunity to branch out of the ordinary and really push my boundaries. All of the spaces are designed with luxury and relaxation at their heart. It’s an opportunity for guests to quite literally sail away from the stresses of modern life, explore an alternative style of travel and the vast array of experiences that it has to offer, and ultimately to make unforgettable memories.

There’s something so exciting about undocking and feeling a real sense of adventure on the sea – the places you’ll explore, the people you may meet on board. Whether it’s relaxing in the spa or dining in one of the divine restaurants, there really is something for everyone within the Celebrity fleet. I also find water to be such a calming presence, so being surrounded by it every day is blissful.
