Anna has a soft spot for indie labels, and particularly this brand’s vibrant ethical designs Pleated-front print dungarees £30, whatmothermade.co.uk
The couple are parents to two youn g daughter s Matt is very much a hands-on father
MY ESSENTIALS Flex Appeal got started in 2015 – what inspired you to launch it? One day I was 12 minutes late for nursery pick up because of train delays, and I was sat on one of those tiny primarycoloured chairs and told off by the nursery and I just thought, this isn’t working. I put a flexible working request in, just to come 15 minutes early and leave 15 minutes earlier, and it was rejected on the grounds that it would open the floodgates to others seeking flexibility. So, I quit in that moment, and that was when I launched Flex Appeal –to fight for flexible working and to question why we can’t open the floodgates to this flexibility. How has the campaign developed since then? We have a lobby in government at the moment and we’ve just had a 10-minute bill go through to put the onus on the employer, so it’s not down to the employee to prove why it works. It’s down to the employer to have flexibility

from day one and not just after 26 weeks, which is the current law. Your husband is involved in Flex Appeal too. What is it like working on this together? You know, peaks and troughs! We’ve just written a book called Where’s My Happy Ending?
(released in February 2020), and nothing prepares you for your husband editing your work! Ultimately, it’s so important that he’s involved because flexible working isn’t just a mummy issue it’s a people issue, and his voice is essential to make it seen as not just on one gender’s shoulders.
That’s not my unicorn £6.99, amazon.co.uk
You also took the campaign to Downing Street in June 2018 – what was that like? Yes we took #FlexAppeal to Downing Street to put forward changes we think need to be made and raise the profile of the campaign. Matt and I see ourselves as the people on the streets shouting about the issue, so to get recognition from governmental bodies, was a big moment. We’re representing the millions pushed out of the workforce, so that meant a lot. What’s next for the campaign? We’ve just launched a Social Change campaign with a communications agency called Claremont. We decided that while we work to change the law, what needs to change first is people’s minds. They need to see it as a good thing and not just another thing on a list of things to do. Our social change project is going to shine a light on the employers that are getting it right, to really champion those that get it and

Anna is already an author, having written a parenting title in 2017
What advice would you give to those parents who are concerned about asking for flexible working? I think the key is to present it in the most professional business way you can, because ultimately flexibility is good for business. Hold the hand over your employer, suggest a trial period perhaps for three months and be clear on how you’ll measure the success. Don’t take no as an answer, suggest a midway point. You also have a very strong presence on social media and a hugely successful blog Mother Pukka, which launched in 2015. What has it been like to witness the mum blogosphere explode in the way that it has? Part of me is elated and part of me is saddened, to be honest. I’m happy to see women rising and using social media tools that weren’t available and that’s a

good thing. But also, I’m increasingly aware of how many mothers have been pushed out of the workforce and how many set up a blog because of this, rather than out of choice, this was the next best thing they could do. We see the blog as more of a campaigning base now than a lifestyle platform. It’s not about me and my family, it’s about the point we’re making, lobbying in government, and getting companies involved.
You have two daughters, Mae, six, and Eve, two. What’s your favourite thing to do as a family? Lying on the sofa on a Sunday, with a bowl of Cheerios watching episodes of Paw Patrol! Is story time big at home? Which books do they like? It’s a sporadic combination of my own stories (Boris the Lost Badger is a firm favourite), That’s Not My Unicorn and excerpts of Harry Potter and The World’s Worst Children for Mae. What brands do you like Anna and husband Matt work together on the Flex Appeal campaign
dressing them in? A mix of everything from Matalan to independent brands like What Mother Made – they do amazing unisex jumpsuits for all ages. Any favourite interior brands for their bedrooms? I love the Modern Nursery for inspiration, but to be honest, it’s more of a practical space. Storage excites me – IKEA storage is where my interiors heart lies. What’s the best thing about being a mum? My favourite thing is that I’m not thinking about myself anymore, it forces me to think a little outside myself! It sounds dramatic, but I love that I’m raising the next generation – it’s my job. Where’s My Happy Ending? (Bluebird) by Anna Whitehouse and Matt Farquharson, goes on sale on 6 February 2020.

James’ LOVES
SK-II Facial Treatment. While Corden was never one for moisturisers, the star admits that the older he gets, the more he needs something to smooth his wrinkles out after many a sleepdeprived night. Coffee. The presenter has always had a passion for coffee and recently bought a Keurig coffee maker. He counts the drink as another parenting essential. Anything eco. Corden says: “We act like we do but we’re basic caretakers and we’re not doing a great job, in fact we’re doing a terrible job and we need to drastically improve. We need to look after the planet for the next generation and the next generation and the one after that, and on and on.”
HATES
Being away for work. He hates to be away on work projects. “I don’t enjoy anything about work when I’m gone for days and weeks – it could be the best project in the world but I’d still just want to be back with Julia and the kids.” Not being organised. Corden will plan sketches for his Late, Late Show a fortnight in advance, and likes to have family matters down to a similarly crisp schedule. Passwords. “I hate it when I’m told my password is too weak. I’ve now got passwords I can’t remember, so I write them down and keep them in my jeans… and this is meant to be more secure!”

James says he got all of the hard-partying out of his system before the arrival of his son Max
INTERVIEW
• TA L K I N G W I T H J A M E S C O R D E N •
DADDY COOL Amidst all of the LA glitz, London-born actor and comedian James Corden’s biggest role is playing father to his three children ames Corden’s ascent to transatlantic-entertainment-icon status has been nothing short of astounding. He’s an actor who had worked his way through a variety of terrestrial sitcoms, dramas and panel shows in this country. From early smallscreen parts in Boyz Unlimited, Fat Friends and Teachers, to starring in Gavin & Stacey and A League of Their Own, and film roles in Gulliver’s Travels and One Chance to West End leads in The History Boys and One Man, Two Guvnors, Corden has always excelled. Despite all that, there were audible gasps in 2015 when the then-36-year-old succeeded Craig Ferguson as the host of CBS chat staple The Late Late Show. Opportunities to ‘crack America’ don’t come much bigger, but for the Hillingdon-born operator, the chance to slide into the US market with a sincere, uplifting, confident but ultimately gentle interviewing technique came at a cost – time away from his loved ones. Corden, at that point, was a father of two – to Max, born March 2011, and Carey, born October 2014, with wife Julia. The lure of arguably the biggest career step possible was directly at odds with a yearning to settle down as family man, devoted husband, father and role model. “There was uncertainty at first as to how it would work, how long I’d be there for, where the kids would live – all that sort of stuff,” he says. “In the end, the prospect of doing something long distance was just an idea too far removed to even consider, so uprooting everyone to the States and living out the experience in full was by far the way to go, and I can safely say it’s not a decision we have regretted. “It’s a life far, far away from London in almost every respect, but it’s beautiful and, more than anything else, it means I’m with the kids all the time, and being a strong family in one place is such a relief.” Daughter Charlotte became a further addition to the clan when she arrived in December 2017, and while chat-show work dominates his schedule, Corden has earned some serious ‘cool dad’ points with regards to his work projects, particularly when it comes to film choices. “Full-length projects aren’t really possible given my workload, but doing voiceovers for animated movies is quicker and a lot of fun. When I did Peter Rabbit in 2018, I’ll admit it was with more than one eye on the kids. “It’s funny though, you do these films expecting some kind of gushing recognition, adulation and love from your kids, then they look at you as if they genuinely couldn’t care less,” he laughs. “Take Max, for example. He’s clued in, he knows, he’s totally aware, but he just doesn’t care. He’s like, ‘yeah that’s cool’, and that’s all I get. I can see in his head, he’s thinking, ‘don’t all

dads voice characters in animated movies?’ That’s what the kids think. “At the same time though, that’s the great thing about having family. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do out there. When you’re at home, behind closed doors, you’re no one special. And that’s fine. Even when they’re 16 and 13 and 10, who cares. I’m just dad – I do the dishes and make funny faces, that’s all I’m good for,” he laughs. The presenter admits that with every new addition to the clan, his happiness increases to previously untapped levels. “You just don’t think it can get any better, and it does. You can’t picture who your next child is, yet they come along and it’s like they’ve been there forever.” For a period leading up to the birth of son Max, it appeared Corden may have had more time for the party scene than parenthood. By his own admission, he found the lure of late nights difficult to say no to. “It was good fun but I’m over the moon that those days are behind me,” he admits. “We partied hard and had a really fantastic time, but it’s out of my system now. “Fatherhood, in one sense, is a massive transformation in your life. But in another, it doesn’t feel that different. You’re the same person, but there’s a completeness to it all. The truth is I’ve loved every single minute of being a dad. It’s hard, of course, but all I have to do is look at my kids’ faces and it’s worthwhile. I feel incredibly blessed.” Of course, being James Corden, it wouldn’t be right if he didn’t embellish his cherished memories of the early days with a few anecdotes: “I was actually writing my autobiography during Max’s birth… I mean, not at the exact moment, that would’ve been weird. But certainly around the time he was born. A few times I got completely distracted writing it when I had arranged to be at the hospital. “Once Max came home from hospital I wanted all the responsibility from minute one. I don’t think you’re a hands-on dad until you’ve had your child’s poo under your fingernails. It’s at that point you can say you’re a proper father! Oh, and those times when you’d pop out for a drink and a mate would point out the sick on your shoulder.” As for the experiences and advice the Brit can bring to his kids’ lives, he looks on the lessons from his father. “My dad’s advice to me was to always chase the dream, not the money. When I was 19 I turned down Hollyoaks and it would have been a big deal at the time, but my dad knew it was something I hadn’t dreamt of. He told me to go for the dream instead of taking the money, and that’s definitely a moral I’ll pass on to my kids. “Who knows, if I hadn’t followed his advice, I might have been the next Ken Barlow!”

REVIEW
THE REVIEW
Sophie Lee AND HER 15-MONTH OLD DAUGHTER TRY OUT THE MAXI-COSI PE ARL PRO I-SIZE
T
he time had come to move my daughter Florence onto her next phase of car seats. After being happy with our first choice, the Maxi-Cosi Pebble, there was no reason for us to look elsewhere, so we opted for the Pebble’s big sister, the Pearl Pro i-Size, which meant we could use our 3wayFix base for longer too.
SAFETY As a first-time mum, I’ve seen so many articles and videos shared on social media about the safety of car seats. And naturally as a parent you just want your child to be safe. The main message that I kept seeing was that children are up to five times safer in a rearward-facing car seat than a forward-facing one. This was of course really important to us when choosing our model, and we plan on keeping Florence rear facing until she’s four years old, which is the age the Pearl Pro recommends. The shell of a rear-facing seat acts as a shield and absorbs the impact of a collision, offering optimum side impact protection, therefore putting significantly less strain on the neck. In addition, sitting on the base means the Pearl Pro also has a click & go installation, so the light and sound feedback confirms it’s correctly installed, another safety feature which puts worried minds at ease.
USABILITY Not only is the seat safe and secure, it’s also very easy to use. Because it sits on the isofix base, there’s no need for a fiddly seat belt. While it doesn’t have a swivel function, I honestly
Florence st arted off in the snug Pebble baby carrier
Buckling Florence up in her new car seat is a dream
don’t think we’ll need it as my husband and I have found it so easy to get Florence into the seat and belted up in that rearward-facing position. The straps extend easily, which is useful when I’m in a rush. I also love that we’re able to use the original base, lessening the need for new baby paraphernalia. The easyto-remove covers are also machine washable, which is a huge plus!
COMFORT Florence could have moved into the Pearl Pro he padded sides and five point from six months but we kept her in her Pebble baby carrier until she turned one as I was harness provide the lti ate in co fort and safety unsure how she would be in a bigger seat! We use the car every day and at weekends often travel longer distances to visit family and friends so I wanted to make sure we got the right seat for our daughter. I needn’t have worried; the Pearl Pro has four different recline positions so she sleeps perfectly in it when travelling. There’s also an adjustable headrest which will provide
comfort as she grows. The seat and straps are extremely well padded with plush fabrics which make for a very comfy journey.
GOOD-LOOKING? I love the style of this sleek car seat. The padded sides and five point harness not only look the part but they provide Florence ultra comfort and safety when we’re out and about. The curved shape of the seat is easy on the eye, and for this car seat group is definitely my favourite design for a toddler seat as it doesn’t look too chunky yet has all the features.
THE VERDICT I absolutely love the Maxi-Cosi Pearl Pro. It’s simple to use and looks and feels very comfortable. I love the fact it can be rear facing until Florence is four years old, which is the main reason we chose it. Maxi-Cosi Pearl Pro I-Size, £195, 3wayFix Car Seat Base, £199, johnlewis.com

ALL THINGS MOTHERHOOD
I
with NEEV SPENCER
’m pleased to say I’m gaining confidence in my mum-of-two status every day. And this month, sleeping and feeding have been the biggest topics in our household; Vivienne is growing beautifully and after combined feeding since birth, I decided – due to work commitments – to slowly stop breastfeeding. Now that Vivienne can understand patterns better we consulted Lucy Shrimpton, known as The Sleep Nanny, to start some gentle sleep training. Implementing a routine has really helped her throughout the day and she settles a lot better for naps. We started with putting her in her SnuzPod cot for each sleep, even during the day, and she’s been learning how to self soothe. Setting out a clear bedtime has also made a big difference: she’s been sleeping through nights, which I still can’t quite believe. Genevieve, my three year old, has regressed with her sleep, and after taking Lucy’s advice in bringing her bedtime forward we’ve seen a change. It also means that both girls’ bedtime at the same time which is so much easier! I’ve now built exercise and healthy eating into my daily routine and this is helping me with my busy lifestyle running around after two little ones. I feel like this newfound determination is benefiting me so much. In other good news, Genevieve got a place at our desired school for next year which is such a relief. We wanted to teach her an important lesson about giving, so gave away her old baby products and winter items to Help Refugees UK. Helping people in need is such a gift. See you all next month! Weaning was actually much easier than I thought it’d be. I cut out feeds gradually and pumped breast milk when I needed to. The Elvie breast pump was amazing for on-the-go subtle pumping. LABOUR
Labour day
Becky Dickinson TAKES A LOOK AT THE OPTIONS THAT ARE AVAIL ABLE TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO BABY’S BIG ARRIVAL s your pregnancy draws to an end, your thoughts will inevitably turn towards the delivery, quite possibly with a mixture of excitement and dread. While some women can’t wait to experience this everyday miracle, others are consumed by anxiety. Yes, childbirth is messy, it hurts and quite frankly anyone who says otherwise is either lying or showing off. But honestly, you just won’t care because it’ll also be the most wondrous, exhilarating and memorable day of your life. From living-room floor to operating theatre, aromatherapy to epidural, there are many ways to bring a baby into the world.
A
relief, such as an epidural, and you may need to be transferred if complications arise.
HOSPITAL BIRTH During a typical hospital delivery, midwives provide the majority of care. If labour progresses smoothly, you’ll be able to move around, try out different positions and use breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. However, you’ll be safe in the knowledge that doctors, anaesthetists and other professionals are on hand if you or your baby need extra support or pain relief. This can be especially reassuring for first-time mums.
HOME BIRTH
CAESAREAN SECTION
If you’re healthy and your pregnancy is low risk, a home birth can offer a safe, relaxing and comfortable way to give birth, with a familiar midwife at your side. Some women also like to hire a doula. In England, around one in 50 babies are delivered in a home birth and for low-risk women who have already had their first child, it’s thought to be as safe as a hospital delivery. If complications arise, you and your baby will be transferred to hospital by ambulance.
Around one in four babies are delivered by caesarean section in the UK. They might
following a c-section birth, so Mrs Pisal says, “We recommend vaginal birth unless there’s a good reason to avoid vaginal delivery.”
WATER BIRTH In England, around 30 per cent of women use water or a birth pool for pain relief, and around six per cent of women actually give birth in a pool. Being in water during labour can help you relax and make the contractions seem less painful. Megan Rossiter is the founder of birth-ed, which runs hypnobirthing and antenatal classes throughout the south east. She says, “Birthing in water can encourage a baby into an optimal position, reducing tearing and the chances of intervention, such as speeding up labour with a hormone drip or the chance of instrumental birth. Occasionally, women find that using the pool in early labour slows things down.” Many women feel that giving birth in water provides their baby with a more gentle transition to life outside the womb. The midwife will have waterproof equipment to monitor the heartbeat and a mirror to check them as they emerge. As the baby’s brought gently to the surface, she’ll continue to get oxygen through the umbilical cord until they meet the air.
DURING A TYPICAL HOSPITAL DELIVERY, MIDWIVES PROVIDE THE MAJORITY OF CARE
For those who would like a non-medical setting but don’t want a home birth, then midwifery units and birth centres, which are designed to feel more like home than a hospital, can be a perfect ‘halfway house’. Women who give birth in midwifery units and birth centres are less likely to end up having intervention, like forceps or ventouse, than women who give birth in hospital. However, if your centre is not attached to a hospital, you won’t be able to have certain kinds of pain

HYPNOBIRTH Hypnobirthing teaches simple self-hypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques to dispell fear and tension and help relaxpelvic muscles. It’s based on the belief that pain isn’t necessary and that a woman’s body is perfectly designed to give birth. For the best chance of success, you’ll need to practise the techniques well in advance. Hypnobirthing methods can help you feel calm and in control, both at home and in hospital.

be planned due to known pregnancy complications, or emergency due to problems that arise during labour, meaning the baby needs to be born quickly. This is usually done using spinal anaesthesia, but sometimes, a general anaesthetic may be necessary. Although c-sections are sometimes perceived to be the ‘easy option’, they involve major abdominal surgery and recovery can take several weeks or longer. Consultant gynaecologist, Mrs Pradnya Pisal, from London Gynaecology, says: “caesareans aren’t without risks, such as infection in the wound or the lining of the uterus, heavy bleeding, deep vein thrombosis, and injury to organs, especially if there’s history of previous surgery.” In addition, babies are more likely to be admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit
LABOUR
BIRTHING PARTNERS PAIN RELIEF Even if you plan to breeze through labour with Mozart and a scented candle, it’s good to be prepared. Babies are notorious rule-breakers and there’s no shame in asking for something stronger. TENS MACHINE Standing for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, it sends small currents into your back via a pair of electrodes. This is thought to reduce the number of pain signals. Often useful during early labour, it’s unlikely to make a difference later on. GAS AND AIR Also known as Entonox, a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide gas that’s inhaled through a mouthpiece, so you can control it yourself. It doesn’t stop the pain, but can make it more manageable. There are no harmful side effects, although some women can feel sick or sleepy. In this case, stop using it. PETHIDINE Usually injected into the thigh or buttock, pethidine is an opiate that provides stronger pain relief than gas and air and can help you to relax; it does make some women feel drowsy or nauseous. It isn’t recommended if you’re close to the second stage of labour as it may make the baby sleepy and slower to feed. EPIDURALS If you’d prefer not to feel a thing, an epidural is your best bet. Anaesthetic is injected into your lower back, providing almost total pain relief. Epidurals can also be used for c-sections or an instrumental birth. Your baby’s heart will be continuously monitored and you’ll have a drip inserted into your hand or arm and a catheter inserted into your bladder, giving a more ‘medical’ feel to your baby’s birth. About one in 100 women experience a severe headache or nausea afterwards, but more serious complications are rare.

The great sleep debate FOR OR AGAINST? Mar tha Alexander GETS THE LOWDOWN ON SLEEP TR AINING hoever first used the phrase “sleep like a baby” clearly had not had a surplus of experience with infants. With the exception of a few natural sleepyheads, baby sleep is usually erratic, unpredictable, fitful and punctuated by frequent waking, when crying and demands for milk will be issued forth with gusto. Some parents cope gallantly with a lack of sleep, often with the resigned smile of acceptance. Others reach the end of their tether within weeks, feeling that sleep deprivation compromises their sense of self and ability to function efficiently. One of the most emotive and sensitive subtopics in parenting has got to be the practice of sleep training. How it’s defined rather depends on your position. For those who welcome sleep training, it’s the practise of encouraging a baby to achieve sleep on her own – without being rocked or fed into slumber. This might involve leaving her to cry. For those who are against sleep training, it’s viewed as the act of abandoning a baby to cry itself to sleep. Let’s unpack both sides of the story here.
W
acknowledges that the term is controversial and gets bad press. It does conjure up images of bleak nurseries of yesteryear and lonely babies sobbing for hours in Moses baskets. However, this scenario is far from how Skudder operates. “You’re just slowly helping your child learn how to sleep well,” she explains. “Some suggest that sleep should happen naturally when baby is ready or that it shouldn’t be forced, but you only have to look at the number of babies who need to learn to breastfeed to know that for lots of babies, many of the “natural” things they are
“A baby who’s sleeping well has a calmer and more predictable temperament, which means baby’s parents are also more relaxed and likely to enjoy parenthood far more.” That said, she disagrees with people who claim that “babies just don’t sleep” or any implication that in choosing to be a parent you have signed up for endless sleepless nights. “A baby totally has the ability to sleep well, you just need to unlock it.” Far from being damaged, Heidi reports that clients contact her to relay stories of happier, calmer babies having been sleep trained. They speak of Heidi having “changed our lives”. Skudder gives short shrift to claims that cortisol released when a baby cries can damage the brain in early infancy. “These studies relate to orphaned children stuck in cots with no one attached caregiver, not a baby who’s loved and goes through a few nights of sleep training,” she says. “There are actually more studies that suggest a mother’s mental health has a longerterm impact on their child’s development, which would be more harmful than a few nights of sleep training.”
“A BABY TOTALLY HAS THE ABILITY TO SLEEP WELL, YOU JUST HAVE TO UNLOCK IT”
Heidi Skudder of The Parent and Baby Coach is an expert in baby sleep and a mother of two. The demand for her services is high – she has worked with more than 1,000 families who struggled with baby sleep. She’s an advocate for sleep training, but
58 | baby-magazine.co.uk
AGAINST SLEEP TRAINING Dr Pragya Agarwal, a behavioural scientist and mum of three, believes crying should be taken seriously, rather than ignored or supressed. “Crying is a natural instinct for a child when they want security. When you leave a baby crying they think no one will come and they don’t get that sense of protection,” she says.

FOR SLEEP TRAINING
supposed to do, don’t come easily and you need to help them.” Skudder dismisses the notion that parents who crave sleep when they have a newborn are not being realistic, or worse, selfish. “Sleep and mental health are directly linked and it’s totally OK to need some good sleep to be able to cope with all the demands that life now throws at us,” she says. For Skudder, the benefits of sleep on a baby are plentiful. “A baby does so many things in her sleep that helps with her development; they consolidate memories, put on weight, learn new skills, get over illnesses quicker,” she says.
Aside from a few content dozers, most babies experience erratic sleep cycles, punctuated with frequent waking and cries for milk
“My responsibility as a parent is to respond to that call for safety and provide comfort. It’s a primal instinct to respond to that cry.” Dr Agarwal believes that sleep training can have a detrimental effect on a child’s mental health: “To leave them crying on their own can create abandonment issues,” she says, adding that “children are small; they are not doing it on purpose”. This view is echoed by Kate Orson, a Hand in Hand Parenting instructor. “Babies and children often wake in the night because they’re dealing with stress or an emotional upset of some kind,” she says. “For help with this, they need connection to a parent so sleep training doesn’t help as it often involves leaving a child alone – the very opposite of what they need! It may appear to ‘work’ because babies and children give up
seeking connection in the night when their calls go unanswered. But this works at a cost of the relationship between parent and child – depending of course on the method of sleep training used.” Many people who don’t agree with sleep training appreciate that it can work on some children – but not all. However, even if it works, this is thought to be at the detriment of other areas of an infant’s life, including through heightened stress. “We do have science that shows cortisol levels were raised in babies who were left to cry it out at night,” says Orson. Sleep training means sleeping separately from your baby – which Dr Agarwal believes can potentially upset the child’s continuing emotional development. “When children sleep in a bed with their
parents this provides comfort which creates a secure sense of self identity,” says Dr Agarwal. “If you pull away from your baby too early there’s no time to strengthen that bind and build any sense of security.” But, what about a mother’s health? “I completely agree that sleeplessness causes stress in new parents,” says Dr Agarwal. “I know it affected my mental health, as well as my relationship with my husband. We were exhausted and sleep deprived and we still are.” However, Dr Agarwal says that despite this, hearing her child cry also affects her mental health hugely. “Every parent has the right to make sleep training decisions for their own child,” she says. “But I feel we need to draw upon evolutionary wisdom and understand why our children are crying first.”

Next-generation healthcare for your newborn ETHICAL AND SUCCESSFUL, Biovault Family EXPL AINS THE LIFE-SAVING CAPABILIT Y OF YOUR BABY’S UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD new generation of babies are growing up protected by an exciting new kind of health insurance. This protection is unique to your child’s needs, entirely organic and potentially lifesaving. The umbilical cord’s stem cells can now be used as your baby’s bespoke health insurance
A LIFELINE FOR FAMILIES Perhaps the most exciting recent development in stem-cell science is the discovery that the umbilical cord is packed with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Like the stem cells in cord blood (HSCs), MSCs can renew and differentiate to create new specialist cell types. But unlike HSCs, which develop into blood cells, MSCs can differentiate into any tissue type such as bone, nerve, tendon and muscle. The potential to use cord blood and cord tissue stem cells to treat disease and injury is enormous and scientists are investigating treatments for: • Alzheimer’s disease • Autism • Bone fractures • Brain injury • Burns • Cerebral palsy • Cystic fibrosis • Diabetes • Hearing loss • Heart attack • Liver disease • Macular degeneration • Multiple sclerosis (MS) • Parkinson’s disease • Spinal cord injury • Stroke While some trials are in very early stages, therapies for severe autism and MS are already helping patients internationally. of MSCs and is engaged in research and development. Its website’s Health Hub offers up-to-date news on trials and patient stories.
A PROVEN TREATMENT Cord blood stem cells represent a pioneering area of medicine, having been used for more than 30 years to treat blood cancers, immune and metabolic disorders and solid tumours.
HOW IT WORKS Collecting your baby’s cord blood and tissue only takes a few minutes. Biovault Family has made the process as simple as possible so that you can focus on your baby. There’s no need to make changes to your birthing plan, and you can still have a natural third stage and delay cord clamping. In fact, most mums say they didn’t notice the collection take place! PARENTING
Bonding with
BABY
USE THOSE E ARLY DAYS TO ENJOY THE SPECIAL MOMENTS AND GET TO KNOW YOUR BABY’S CUES, SAYS Louise Pyne e often assume the bond between mother and newborn is immediate but for some new mums, connecting with a new baby can take time. You may be nauseated from labour drugs, feeling overwhelmed about the momentous experience your body has just undertaken or anxious about the rollercoaster ride of parenting to come. Whatever the reason, there are lots of ways that you can help to foster the relationship between you and your bub. “A delayed bond with your baby can be very isolating and bring up negative feelings. These however, do not reflect the truth of your enormous capacity to nurture and love your baby. Building a bond with your baby is an evolving process so try to treat yourself with the patience and kindness,” reassures Vanessa Christie, early parenting expert and author of The Baby Feeding Book (vanessachristie. com). Here we share some of the best ways to enhance the relationship with your newborn.

STAY CLOSE Under stressful circumstances, levels of the ‘love hormone’ oxytocin, which helps you to bond with your baby, can be reduced. Staying close to her can help build a connection and using a co-sleeper cot is one of the best ways to respond to her cues quickly. “The familiar sounds of your breathing and voice will help soothe her and create a calmer environment to aid bonding. Using a co-sleeper means you

can hear her little sounds as she sleeps, stroke her head and attend to her with less physical effort in the night, meaning more rest and less stress,” maintains Vanessa.
USE A CARRIER Carrying your baby in a sling or carrier is a convenient option when you’re out and about, but it also helps her learn to trust, be soothed and interact easily with you and her environment. “There are many different types of carriers including stretchy and woven
FEELING YOUR BABY CLOSE TO YOU HELPS RELEASE OXYTOCIN AND REDUCES STRESS HORMONES wraps, ring slings and soft-structured carriers to name a few. Visit a local sling library to chat to a baby-wearing consultant about what type suits your needs and hire them out for a minimal fee,” advises Vanessa.
MAKE EYE CONTACT Eye contact is a powerful way to connect and communicate, and research has shown it can even help a parent and baby’s brain waves to sync together. “Eye contact helps both mother and baby to relax and learn to trust and understand each other. Be mindful of using
eye contact at any little moments you find, such as during bathing, changing, snuggling on your bed and during both breast and bottle feeds,” explains Vanessa.
ENJOY SKIN-TO-SKIN Feeling your baby close to you helps release oxytocin and reduces stress hormones. Studies also show that babies who experience skin-to-skin have increased immunity, improved sleep and better brain development then those who don’t. “If you need to be up off the sofa, try carrying her around the house

OLYMPIC CHAMPION Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill SHARES HER TOP PREGNANCY AND POSTNATAL EXERCISE TIPS
Dame Jessica launched Jennis, an exercise app, to share the health and fitness e pertise she gained through her pregnancies

FITNESS
taying active throughout your pregnancy is a great way to prepare your body for labour and maintain a healthy lifestyle. But as only approximately 5.5 per cent of fitness industry professionals are actually qualified in pre- and postnatal exercise, finding the right guidance can be tricky. I personally remember feeling quite nervous about what I could and couldn’t do before giving birth to my first child. It was this widespread uncertainty that encouraged me to launch my exercise app, Jennis, where I’ve shared all the health and fitness expertise I accumulated during and after my two pregnancies. Whether you’re expecting or your little one has already arrived, here’s my guide to pre- and postnatal fitness, including all the benefits and safety tips, plus simple and easy workouts to try out at home.
S
PRENATAL EXERCISE WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
As well as preventing excessive weight gain (which is linked to other health problems, like gestational diabetes), keeping mobile during pregnancy can boost bone health, reduce blood pressure, and alleviate so many other health problems, such as constipation, poor sleep and bloating. It also improves blood flow
KEEPING YOUR LEGS STRONG CAN IMPROVE CIRCULATION AND REDUCE SWELLING AND CRAMPING around the body, relieving fluid retention, swollen ankles and cramps. Staying active similarly affects mental wellbeing, and during my own pregnancies, it gave me the feeling of being back in control when so much around me was changing. There’s several studies that support the importance of prenatal exercise, too, particularly in terms of mental health.
circulation and reduce swelling and cramping. Start by putting a resistance band around your ankles – sit down to do this. Stand up straight and maintain an upright posture, then – keeping one leg straight and your foot in parallel – raise your leg sideways up, out and back in again. Do 10 reps on each leg, being careful not to overstretch.
EXERCISE SUGGESTIONS
SHOULDER BLADES ACTIVATOR
SQUATS
Doing squats can help to open the pelvis, build lower-body strength, and facilitate birth if you’re preparing for an active labour. Simply place an exercise ball between you and the wall as a support, and make sure that your knees are just over a shoulder-width apart. Put your arms straight out in front of you and squat for 10 reps, being sure to stay within your comfort range.
LEG ABDUCTION Keeping your legs strong can improve Squats help to open up the pelvis, and are helpful for facilitating active labour
If you’re suffering from backache, this workout is ideal for easing aches and pains. Get yourself a lighter resistance band and hold it in both hands, then pull it slightly to activate your shoulder blades. When you step forward, push through your back leg onto your toes, bending your elbows at 90 degrees and bringing them up to shoulder height. Be sure to use the muscles in your bottom as you step forward – do five reps on each leg.
COFFEE-TABLE LIFT This exercise is great for strengthening your upper body, arms and core muscles. Carefully get down onto all fours, with your hands at shoulder width apart and your knees at hip width apart. Find a comfortable position and make sure your back is flat. Breathe out and contract your tummy muscles gently, then curl your toes under and prepare to lift your knees as you breathe out. As you lower your knees back down, breathe out. Do 10 reps.
The coffee-table lift will strengthen your core

REMEMBER IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GET STARTED, NO MATTER WHICH TRIMESTER YOU’RE IN
POSTNATAL EXERCISE WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Post-birth, you should be able to see how the right strength and resistance training exercises can help to support the way your muscles have changed and grown. In practice, this should help you get your strength and fitness back on form. There are also huge benefits in terms of your pelvic floor. As part of my own pregnancy fitness programme, there was lots of emphasis on this, as it can help to prevent further problems later down the line, such as stress incontinence.
It helps to slot elements of your workout plan into other elements of your day-to-day routine
is to listen to your body – if you’re tired, or your postnatal bleeding (lochia) gets heavier or changes colour, you could be doing too much too soon.
WHEN CAN I START? According to The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, “if both pregnancy and delivery are uncomplicated, a mild exercise programme may begin immediately.” The NHS recommends walking, gentle stretches, pelvic floor and tummy exercises, and advises waiting until after your six-week postnatal check to start any high-impact workouts, such as running or aerobics.
WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR The NHS warns that your lower back and core

abdominal muscles will be weaker than they used to be, and your ligaments and joints will be more supple for a few months following labour. This means there’s an increased risk of injury if you twist or stretch too much, so don’t overdo it. Don’t rely on your prepregnancy sports bra either, as your cup and back size will have probably changed. The key

and take things at your own pace. Remember to avoid any high-impact or heavy exertion exercises, and stay cool by wearing looser, comfortable clothing.
FINDING THE TIME Plan your sessions in advance and schedule them in as ‘me’ time; I always used to do my plan on a Sunday night, both during and after my pregnancies. Slot workouts into other elements of your daily routine – for instance, try holding your pelvic floor for as long as the kettle takes to boil. I also used to do a lot of pregnancy ache and cramp-relieving exercises in front of the TV in the evenings.
Remember that it’s never too late to get started, no matter which trimester you’re in; you just need to make sure you do exercises that are right for your stage of pregnancy. And of course, don't forget that even doing just 10 minutes is better than nothing at all! It’s amazing how good you’ll feel after even a small amount of physical activity. I THINK MY BABY MAY BE SUFFERING FROM COLIC OR HAVE A TONGUE TIE – WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?
I
t’s normal for babies to have periods where they’ll want to feed frequently and not be put down, but how do you know when your baby is experiencing something more extreme? Babies with colic will often seem inconsolable, typically be red faced, have a high-pitched cry, clench their fists, pull their knees up and have a rigid tummy. Colic is thought to occur in around a quarter of babies and although in most cases symptoms will go away by around four months, while your baby is experiencing it, it’s exhausting and worrying. We’re not entirely sure what causes colic but it’s thought to be linked to the baby’s digestive system. It might be caused by cows’ milk protein allergy, temporary lactose intolerance, gut bacteria or trapped gas. Tongue tie occurs when a baby’s frenulum (the membrane underneath the tongue connecting it to the bottom of their mouth) is too short, which affects its movement, meaning they struggle to latch on to feed. Many babies have a visible frenulum, but that doesn’t mean they’ll struggle to latch. Some babies have frenulums that attach all the way to the tip of the tongue and can be quite thick, making it almost impossible for them to stick their tongue out, or move it high enough, to breastfeed.
Newborn comfort cushion £139, babocush.com
Colief Infant Drops £11.39, naturesbest.co.uk
You can’t always tell if a baby is tongue tied just by looking. Some signs your baby may have tongue tie include it being very difficult to latch your baby, their latch is very shallow, your nipples are painful, they’re gassy as they take in too much air, or they ‘head bang’ at the breast, sliding off frequently. Your baby might feed very frequently, often with short feeds. They might struggle to put on weigh, despite frequent feeds. If you’re having problems latching, ask your health professional to check for tongue tie. If they says there’s no tongue tie, but you’re still having problems, seek support from a breastfeeding counsellor or IBCLC. If your baby does have a tongue tie, it may be possible to snip it to give their tongue more movement. This can help with breastfeeding, but it’s important not to do it unless it’s necessary, as it can lead to pain and infection. If you do decide to get your baby’s tongue tie divided, look for someone with specialist qualifications. You can find accredited practitioners on the Association of Tongue-tie Practitioners website tongue-tie.org.uk. TOP TIPS FOR COLIC Reducing colic symptoms can be trial and error as not everything has the same effect for every baby. Over the counter solutions such as Infacol or Dentinox work to reduce any trapped gas. Colief helps babies digest the lactose in their milk. There is no conclusive evidence that gripe water, or herbal remedies work, although they might help support the good bacteria in your baby’s digestive system. Alternatively, their sweet taste might be responsible for any soothing effect. If you can work out where any trapped gas is coming from this might help. Perhaps your latch may need adjusting? Sometimes, holding your baby more upright during and after feeds can help, too. If in doubt, speak to an infant feeding specialist who will be able to support you. Listening to your baby cry is exhausting, so look don’t be afraid to ask for help.

HOW TO BREATHE YOURSELF CALM Dominique Antiglio, author of The LifeChanging Power of Sophrology, suggests this breathlengthening exercise. • Take a normal, deep breath in through the nose and then out through the mouth several times. • Now, count the length of your in breath and breathe out to twice the length, so in for three counts and out for six or if you are an experienced deep breather, then in for five and out for a count of 10. Imagine that you’re slowly blowing out a candle with the out-breath. • Repeat this mindfully for two - three minutes, with eyes closed. • You’ll notice after a while that the body and mind calm down.
Breath control is not only a perfect exercise for new parents to practise, it’s also proven to reduce stress levels

AND BREATHE...
COULD YOUR LUNGS PROVIDE THE SECRET TO STAYING CALM IN TIMES OF STRESS? Becky Dickinson INVESTIGATES
reathe! If there’s one word you’re likely to hear during labour, it’s ‘breathe.’ Yet breathing isn’t just for contractions, it’s key to our overall health and wellbeing – and never more so than when you’re negotiating the ups and downs and round-in-circles of parenthood. Of course, we all know how to breathe, it’s something most of us do without even thinking about. In, out, repeat. Yet it turns out most of us are doing it wrong, or at least inefficiently. And inadequate breathing has been linked to a multitude of wellness complaints including: tiredness, insomnia, muscle cramps, cardiovascular problems, and especially, anxiety. When it comes to understanding the correct way to breathe, one of the best things you can do is to sit watch your baby while they’re asleep (as if you needed an excuse!). When babies breathe they take big, full breaths that permeate their whole bodies, causing their bellies to expand like a balloon. As they exhale, the belly falls, flattening as the air flows out. There’s an effortless, beautiful rhythm. This is the way we were designed to breathe. However, as we go through life, our breathing becomes more constricted. We develop the tendency to hold our breath whenever we are worried or upset, until we do it without even realising. In essence, stress causes us to forget how to breathe like a baby. However, Sophrologist Dominique Antiglio, believes it’s possible to reconnect with our original breath. Sophrology is a kind of ‘moving meditation’ which focuses on ways of managing stress, including breathing exercises. “We use the breath as a way into the power of consciousness,” says Dominique. “The breath is a bridge between the mind and the
B
body, a doorway to consciousness and a way to connect to the here and now.” While babies are perfectly in tune with their own breath, many adults are what is known as ‘chest breathers.’ This means that instead of using our diaphragm muscle to draw air right down into our abdomen, we only breathe into the upper region of our lungs, limiting the amount of oxygen we can absorb. To test yourself, place one hand on your abdomen and one on your chest, between your collar bones. Now take a deep breath. If you’re breathing correctly, your belly should rise like a baby’s. If not, and your chest inflates instead, you’re a chest-breather. Unfortunately, this can lead to a heightened sense of anxiety, due to the biological link
families will recognise from experience. Amazingly, by learning to consciously control our breath, we can switch off the fight-or-flight response and engage the parasympathetic nervous system instead. This is the part of the nervous system that helps us to chill out by triggering the release of calming hormones that tell the body to rest and digest. The important thing is to breathe into the tummy, rather than the chest. This is called abdominal breathing or belly breathing, and it stimulates the vagus nerve – a magical bundle of neurons that tells our brain we’re relaxed and safe. This in turn helps to lower our heart rate and blood pressure, ushering in a sense of calm. It sounds ridiculously simple, but breath control really is a scientifically proven way to reduce stress levels. What’s more, breath training has been integral to Buddhism and yoga for thousands of years and at last the modern world is waking up to the benefits, with classes and retreats springing up around the country. Dominique stresses: “It’s important to remember that this is not about forcing the breath to change, it’s about getting to know your breath, and trusting that it will naturally change over time.” Breathing has even been dubbed the new yoga. And the best thing about it: there’s no need for any fancy equipment, just you and your lungs. It’s also the perfect exercise for new parents, as you can do it while your newborn is sleeping, without having to go to the gym or squeeze into yoga pants. What’s more, learning how to stay calm and overcome anxiety using simple breathing techniques means you’ll always have something to turn to during those more challenging moments of parenthood. And breathe...

IN ESSENCE, STRESS CAUSES US TO FORGET HOW TO BREATHE LIKE A BABY between stress and breathing. When we’re relaxed and happy we tend to take deep, slow breaths. Yet when we’re anxious, our breath becomes faster and shallower. This tells the sympathetic nervous system to activate the fight-or-flight response, triggering an increase in heart rate and blood pressure and flooding our bodies with stress hormones like cortisol. A few millennia ago, this response would have helped our ancestors confront real, physical danger. However, these days it’s basically a massive overreaction. The problem is our chimp-brains don’t know the difference in threat levels between a prowling tiger and a crying, colicky baby. So anything that makes us feel on edge can trigger the fight-or-flight response, and this can leave us in a perpetual state of anxiety, as many parents of young

IS IT WORTH GETTING THE FLU VACCINE? If you fall into one of the at-risk groups, it’s definitely worth getting it. If you’re a healthy older child or adult, you might decide that it’s worth having it. If you catch flu, it’s unlikely to land you in hospital or dead but it will put you out of action for a bit, so you could make your decision based on the likelihood of catching flu and the impact it would have on your life.
WHY DO PREGNANT WOMEN NEED THE FLU VACCINE? When you’re pregnant your immune system is suppressed so your body doesn’t reject your unborn baby. This makes you more likely to catch

flu and if you do get it, you’ll be much more unwell than you would be otherwise. To put it into perspective, one in 10 maternal deaths in the UK are due to flu.
IS THIS VACCINE 100 PER CENT EFFECTIVE? No vaccine is 100 per cent effective and the flu vaccine is manufactured every year based on the strains of influenza predicted to be prevalent. How well it works depends on the strains of flu that emerge each year, as the vaccination is only effective against the strains it’s designed to arm you against. As the virus constantly mutates, it’s a bit of a guessing game, but generally speaking it’s very effective.

veryone dreads getting the flu, but what most people call flu, isn’t actually flu, it’s more of a cold. Proper flu is really nasty and in some cases can be fatal, especially for the young, old or pregnant women. A bad cold might put you out of action for a day or two, while with flu, a fit and healthy person is most likely to be in bed for a week whilst the old, young or those expecting might well end up in hospital. This is why the flu vaccine is routinely given to vulnerable groups of people who might be seriously affected – namely pregnant women, children aged two to 11 and over-65s, as well as anyone with a chronic disease that puts them at risk. If you fall within these groups, you’ll be contacted by your NHS doctor to have the flu jab. The flu vaccine is very safe. As with any vaccination it can cause you to be a bit under the weather for a day or two after and it’s common to be a bit sore where the injection was given for a few days but most people get no side effects at all. There are three different types of flu vaccine – a nose spray for children, an injection for those under 65 and pregnant women, and a different injection for adults over 65. If you’re not eligible for the flu vaccine on the NHS, because you don’t fall into an ‘at risk’ group, you can still have it privately. This might be worth exploring if you have a young baby at home or you’d rather not have flu this year. Many pharmacies offer this inexpensive service.

Creamy oats with lots of spice and fruit – this makes a great breakfast or snack and can be made in a large Tupperware, or as individual portions so you know you’ve got an on-the-go breakfast ready for the morning rush. INGREDIENTS
• 200g rolled oats • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • pinch ground nutmeg • 1 tsp maple syrup (optional) • 100g apple & cinnamon fruit pouch or apple purée • 250ml milk such as almond or oat milk FOR THE APPLE PIE FILLING:
B A K E D S W E E T P O TAT O BITES WITH BROCCOLI
• 1 medium eating apple peeled, cored and chopped into small chunks • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
• pinch of nutmeg • 1 tsp maple syrup • 120ml water METHOD
Place the oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, apple purée and maple syrup (if using) into a medium sized bowl and stir to combine. Cover the bowl with cling film and place in the fridge for at least 6 hours, overnight if possible. Make the apple pie filling: Place the chopped apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, maple syrup and water into a small saucepan and place over a medium heat. Bring to a boil, stirring continuously. Once boiling, turn the heat down to low and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until thick and the apples are tender. You want them soft, but with a little bite still. To serve, divide the oats into 2-3 portions and top each with the apple pie filling. Serve warm or cold. To warm a portion, place in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, until the desired temperature is achieved.
Preparation: 10 mins Cooking: 30 mins Serves 4 Suitable from 10 months INGREDIENTS
• 4 small sweet potatoes • 300g frozen broccoli florets • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard • pinch of paprika • 1 egg, beaten • 140g grated cheddar cheese
Use these delicious oats as an on-the-go snack or a wholesome breakfast
METHOD
Heat oven to 200°C/180°C fan or gas mark 6. Microwave the potatoes on high for 12-15 minutes until tender. Meanwhile, steam or boil the broccoli for 3 minutes, then drain well. Once the potatoes have cooled a little, cut them in half lengthways and scoop the insides into a bowl. Put the potato shells on a baking sheet. Mash the flesh with a fork, then stir in the mustard, egg, most of the cheese and the broccoli. Season if needed, then pile back into the shells. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top and bake for 15 minutes, until the tops are golden. Serve with salad and tomato relish.

Rhinefield House Hotel, New Forest Editor REBECCA MOORE recharges her batteries in rural Hampshire
I
t’s rare for me to visit a hotel twice, but after swooning over Rhinefield House Hotel back in 2016 for a friend’s wedding, I knew I’d be back for round two. Despite being located in the depths of the New Forest National Park, Rhinefield is surprisingly easy to reach from London. Swapping the city buzz for something a little calmer, this four-star hotel has all the ingredients for a weekend in the country. Spa? Check. Surrounded by luscious grounds? Check. Bedrooms fit for a royal? Oh yes, 50 of them. Prior to what now is quite the striking mansion, it’s believed that there have been various structures here since the time of William the Conqueror, who used the area as royal hunting ground. Now, the beautiful blend of Tudor and gothic architecture, combined with 40 acres of private grounds, makes it quite the blissful escape. While Rhinefield has a dignified presence, it’s unfussy, not at all pretentious, and above all very welcoming. All the rooms are named rather than numbered – many after places in the New Forest or after birds or plants – a subtle nod to the rich natural surroundings. And if you happen to be travelling with a babe in arms, or a curious toddler, the hotel’s can-do spirit will see you fixed up with a cot in the room. The New Forest is renowned for its food produce; so expectations were high for dinner at the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, The Armada. Full of floor-to-ceiling period charm – think intricate wood panelling and a marble fireplace – it makes for a rather decadent setting, while the menu, was far less elaborate, but in a comforting way. The food has a focus on provenance, with many dishes, particularly for meat eaters, sourced from local suppliers. You won’t leave hungry either, as portion sizes here would please Henry VIII. It’s safe to say I swooned once again: a tranquil country stay Rhinefield is just the ticket.
A two night weekend stay is priced from £418, handpickedhotels.co.uk

MARRAKECH
Poolside playtime established many holiday friendships
Kate Freud AND FAMILY HE AD TO MOROCCO FOR A MAGICAL GETAWAY
here’s no bad time to visit Morocco, making it appealing for out-of-season travellers with pre-schoolers. We didn’t quite have that option as our eldest son, Jago, is now seven, so as a family of five we bravely jetted to Marrakech on a mid-summer holiday, but I can now safely say we needn’t have worried; kids are far more adaptable than we give them credit for! We’d had our hearts set on Hotel Les Deux Tours after endless recommendations from friends, which cut out the laborious research. Situated in the Palmeraie area of the city, the hotel’s lush surroundings were a welcome escape from the bustle of the city beyond. We’re welcomed with mint tea and sweet treats, and from there on in, we enjoy the most relaxing week possible with three small children in tow. The resort is home to trad Moorish villas, with 37 rooms in total, including seven pool suites. We weren’t quite brave enough to choose one of these with Willow, our completely fearless 18-month old on the loose, but we were thrilled with our riad-style accommodation surrounding a private courtyard. It meant the children had somewhere completely safe and contained to play in. The hotel also provides, cots, sterilisers, highchairs and even babysitters should you want. Each day we would head for breakfast on the restaurant terrace. The buffet was delicious, and the children would play happily with the hotel cats, or visit the resident donkeys. The hotel also has

peacocks, fish, turtles and frogs, which kept the little ones happy for hours. We would then head to the stunning heated pool, where there were lots of other young families, with all the children becoming firm friends as the week progressed. Come mid-afternoon, we’d all retreat inside for a siesta (air con on) when the day was at its hottest. Late afternoons were spent by the pool again, where we’d feed the baby, let her have one last run around while we sipped G&Ts then pop her into bed, before enjoying a laidback meal on the terrace with the older two children, Jago and Georgia. Post-dinner, they’d play with their many new pals, we’d chat and relax and all be asleep by 10pm – it was the most rest we’ve had in ages. Feeling a little adventurous we ventured as a family into the souk once, where we all got a little something (very nice baskets in my case). The children were blown away by the sights and smells, and despite the fact we ended up carrying all three of them for much of it, it was an experience we’ll never forget! Overlooking the souk rooftops and city beyond, our post-shopping meal at restaurant Nomad was delicious, and the staff delightful. But this little adventure aside, we really felt no need whatsoever to venture further than the beautiful hotel grounds, which offered all we could possibly want for the week. Room prices from £160, including breakfast. les-deux-tours.com

BUSINESS
Jane found the inspiration for Natural Birthing Company while working as a midwife at the City Hospital in Nottingham Application of the brand’s essential oils really help mums-to-be and new mums relax The Mama’s Moments Maternity Kit is sometimes dubbed ‘a midwife in a box’
What are the brand’s core values? Being open and approachable are key
98 | baby-magazine.co.uk
JANE MASON
The Natural Birthing Company founder talks multi-tasking, veganism and supporting women beyond pregnancy characteristics in midwifery, so we like to ensure our brand voice is friendly and approachable. Our expertise plays a big part, not just as midwives but across all aspects of the business. Passion flows from all corners of the brand, too, whether we’re tackling the common issues of pregnancy or life as a new mother. As a vegan, it’s also important to me that our products aren’t tested on animals and contain no animal traces – all of our ingredients are totally natural and don’t contain any harsh chemicals. Mama’s Moments Birthing Essentials Kit £20, boots.com
Describe a typical day for you. In the morning, I take a shower with our Best Washes, which leaves me feeling ready for the day ahead. If I’m not working directly with a mum-to-be through midwifery, I’ll be at Natural Birthing Company’s head office. Sometimes I’ll be developing new products, other times I’ll be producing our quarterly marketing plans, planning and managing our event schedule, or even getting stuck in with customer service! How do you maintain a good work/life balance? Multi-tasking is key in midwifery, and this comes in handy when I’m maintaining my many responsibilities at work and at home. One in six adults experience a mental health issue every week, so I think it’s
important to allow yourself some downtime. I always ensure I get adequate sleep – I use our Sleepy Mama every night to ensure I’m relaxed – and maintain a healthy vegan diet. I also love spending time with my family and our dogs. What’s been your proudest business moment? I’ve supported so many women through their pregnancies, and am always amazed to see them develop as new mums. The feedback we received after launching the brand was also a proud moment, as I could see the positive impact our products were having. It was incredible to see our products in Boots in 2015, too, and that platform has helped us reach millions of people. What’s next for the company? We’re going to continue developing products that tackle real pregnancy issues and life as a new mum, to establish our place as the UK’s leading pregnancy brand. I’m also excited to announce that we’ll be launching with Next Online in 2020! naturalbirthingcompany.com
PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK
What inspired you to launch Natural Birthing Company? Back in 2013, I started as a rotational midwife at the City Hospital in Nottingham, which involved supporting women in the labour suite and on the antenatal and postnatal wards. I launched Natural Birthing Company in the same year, but at the time it was only providing private antenatal classes in our area. On the ward, we’d routinely offer new mums compresses that were soaked in diluted essential oils to soothe sore perineum and nipples or engorged breasts. My favourite part of my shift was showing the new mums how to apply the compresses, as I could see how relaxed it made them. This was my lightbulb moment – these women should be able to use these essential oils at home, too. I worked with an aromatherapist to develop a range of natural products, and launched it in 2014. We now export the oils globally!
