Size does not matter all the time. Sometimes, it takes guts, perseverance, hard work and a vision to compete against the Goliaths of the corporate Philippines.

PROMDIPRENEUR RISES AGAINST BIG PLAYERS

Dennis Uy, Chairman and President of Udenna Corp., the promdi-entrepreneur from Mindanao, has proven just that. He began small, put in the work and eventually built a commercial empire in markets dominated by top petroleum companies and major telecommunications providers.

Uy developed and introduced different and better products and services to the market and embraced the opportunities presented to him, secure in his roots, but at the same time, conscious of the difficulties involved in creating enterprises that would have to compete with the big players.

UDENNA SEEKING STRATEGIC PARTNERS FOR SUBSIDIARIES

Davao businessman Dennis A. Uy said he is looking for “strategic partners” for Udenna Corp.’s capital-intensive businesses, such as its shipping and petroleum trading firms.

“We are looking for partners who can help us further expand our businesses and promote our brands. We have clearly spelled out our growth strategy which does not simply include selling assets.

Like all visionary entrepreneurs, we want to go beyond the buyand-sell mentality and move towards a more sustainable business that protects and supports the thousands of families that depend on us,” he said in a statement.

Despite its great potential for growth, poor transport infrastructure and high costs are holding back the logistics industry, insiders said.

Most domestic businesses were small or medium-sized with limited capital, technology and automation, and face fierce competition from foreign companies.

But domestic businesses were increasingly investing in infrastructure, modern warehousing and technology to increase their market share, he added.

LOGISTICS INDUSTRY HELD BACK BY POOR INFASTRUCTURES

A young and growing population of around 100 million people, stable and supportive Government policies, extensive trade agreements with other countries, and favourable trends in manufacturing, exports and domestic consumption were driving logistics services, Chih Cheung, founding managing partner at SLP Vietnam, said.

SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

Social sustainability involves creating policies that minimize social inequality and give everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic or cultural background, the same chances to live a high-quality life.

Building communities and institutions that are socially sustainable means that all decisions and value propositions must take into account equity, diversity, human rights, social cohesion, and workers’ rights. These strategies are meant to make life better for people today and in the coming years.

HOW CAN WE PRACTICE THIS?

1CULTIVATE A HEALTHY WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Keeping employees from becoming burned out and boosting their confidence by providing them with sufficient time for personal and family responsibilities. Encourage employees to take time off for their mental health and give them the option to work from home if they so choose.

DONATE TO A SOCIAL CAUSE

Philanthropy can take several forms, such as donating money to a charitable organization, volunteering one’s time, or contributing one’s resources. For every pair of shoes a store sells, for example, they should give a pair to someone who is living on the street. This would be a great way to help those in need.

EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH & SAFETY

Workplace safety is more vital than financial objectives. It is essential to maintain all equipment and upgrade to newer, more secure models as they become available. Examine safety regulations and develop incentives for sick employees to remain at home.

GIVE BACK TO YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

Explore community engagement strategies that will also improve your company’s customer communication. These include purchasing from local businesses and establishing partnerships with them, rewarding employees for volunteer work, and lowering the environmental impact of your business.

STEWARDSHIP

Those who are blessed with good fortune have the obligation of stewarding their resources so that they might be passed on to subsequent generations in an even better state. It requires accepting responsibility for things other than one’s own life, one’s own business, and ultimately one’s own life itself.

WHO ARE THE STEWARD LEADERS?

People who are driven by their own internal motivations and sees the bigger picture are more likely to take on the role of steward than those who are motivated by the rewards that others provide them. Steward leaders always have a long-term vision, a genuine harmony with a true company goal, and a sincere concern for their staff members.

HOW CAN COMPANIES BUILD STEWARDSHIP?

An organization with good management prioritizes the present while protecting its ability to generate profits in the future, and its foundational capabilities and relationships are protected. Their measure of success is the extent to which their actions will have a beneficial effect on future generations economically, socially, and environmentally.

1LEAD WITH IMPACT

Transformative leaders are those who inspire their teams to reach new heights by a combination of charisma, inspiration, intellectual stimulation, and personal care.

PRUDENCE & CARE

Steward leaders ensure the long-term success of their organizations and the people who have a stake in them by being careful and thinking ahead. They’re smart enough to know that future growth is more important than immediate gain. In the long run, this will help the company get better and grow again.

TRANSPARENCY & ACCOUNTABILITY

Steward leaders are able to bring about constructive social change in areas outside of the firm by demonstrating a strong awareness of the organization’s broader societal influence through the use of openness, accountability, and responsibility in their daily activities.

LORAINE JANE AMIT

Junior Account Officer

Joined the team in May 2012 10 years with the Chelsea Group

HARD-WORKING. COMPASSIONATE. OPTIMISTIC.

Three words to describe you.

What do you like the most about your job?

There is a room for me to develop my skills. Also, I have a right balance of work and life. My autonomy in work enables me to share my ideas and my innovation to others.

What is the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?

NEVER stop learning. There is wisdom in showing up everyday to learn. I will encounter new challenges in work which would add value to my knowledge and skills. That is why I should never stop learning.

Employee Feature 30

Describe one scenario in your work where you exercised STEWARDHIP.

It was when I was assigned to oversee an activity (packing and crating) involving Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua, said personal items are bound for China.

I led the team during the activity. I ensured our timeliness and reminded the team to always be polite to all. I listened to all personal instructions, insights, and requests of the client, and ensured that they were met based on client’s standards. We managed to complete the activity with diligence to ensure that the items will arrive to the destination

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

It is my added joy to have quality bonding moments with my kids. Oftentimes, we love to dine in restaurants, watch movies, watch volleyball and travel.

If your department were a superhero, who would it be and why?

A department is a team effort. Thus, I would say we are “The Avengers”. With the wisdom and leadership of our Sales & Marketing manager, we make ourselves a dream team. We collaborate with and listen to each other to deliver a desired result and to overcome trials that will come. “We are great team players individually, but we are at our best corporately”

in perfect condition. We exceeded the client’s expectations. As we represent WSI in everything we do, we made sure we went the extra mile for the client. To be a good steward is to listen and learn from someone. Do everything with diligence. Be responsible. And protect the good of your company as if it is your own.

If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN.

I will beg him to stop the war with Ukraine. When the war started, it affected most countries, especially the Philippines. The prices of gasoline and diesel alike increased exponentially. The devaluation of peso led to inflation.

We are just starting to cope with the pandemic; and this war has been hindering us from sustaining our recovery. This may not be realistic, but I hope I’d be given the chance

Where’s your favorite place in the world?

There is no place like home. A home is where my heart is. And that is my family.
