HUNT FOR THE SHADOW WOLF

The Lost History of Wolves in Britain and the Myths and Stories That Surround Them

Derek Gow

Author of Bringing Back the Beaver and Britain’s favourite maverick rewilder Derek Gow uncovers the mythology, mystery and history of wolves with the dream that one day, we will see the return of the wolf to Britain. As Derek worked to reintroduce the beaver, he began to hear stories of the wolf, both real and mythical. He pieced together fragments of information, stories and artefacts to reveal a shadowy creature that first walked proudly through these lands and then was hunted to extinction. What Derek came to realise was that the underlying motives behind our hatred were actually rooted in power and profit. We turned the wolf into a savage beast and saw its 2 CHELSEA GREEN PUBLISHING UK

extirpation as a civilising mission. With bitingly funny but also tender stories of folklore and mythology, Derek makes it clear why we must reconcile our relationship with this majestic animal before we can begin to bring it back to these lands. Derek Gow is a farmer, nature conservationist and the author of Bringing Back the Beaver and Birds, Beasts and Bedlam. Derek has played a significant role in the reintroduction of the Eurasian beaver, the water vole and the white stork in England. He is currently working on a reintroduction project for the wildcat. He now lives with his children, Maysie and Kyle, on a 300acre farm on the Devon/Cornwall border, which he is in the process of rewilding.

HEDGELANDS

A Wild Wander Around Britain’s Greatest Habitat

Christopher Hart

In this joyous journey around the wild edges of Britain, Christopher Hart takes us through the life, ecology and history of the humble British hedge, showing how this much-loved feature is inextricably woven into our language, history and culture. Hedges – or hedgerows – have long been an integral part of the British landscape; a bastion of privacy for our gardens, a protective presence on winding country lanes and a vital hiding place for birds and beasts on farmland. They are now considered the greatest edge habitat on earth, playing a critical role in carbon sequestration and have come to be recognised as a powerful climate ally. This book celebrates the hawthorn and hazel of ancient hedges; the abundance of wildlife, from 4 CHELSEA GREEN PUBLISHING UK

the elusive dunnock to the striking nightingale, the industrious hedgehog to the little harvest mouse; and the free pickings that the hedgerow offers, making it an essential – and delicious – element of any countryside ramble. Christopher Hart has written ten literary and historical novels, including Lost Children and Rescue Me, while his historical fiction, written under the pen name of William Napier, includes Julia, the best-selling Attila trilogy and the Last Crusaders trilogy. His work has been praised in both The Times Literary Supplement and the Sunday Sport. He has also published numerous short stories, essays and reviews, and has been a freelance journalist since the 1990s, for The Sunday Times, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph and others. He lives in Wiltshire, where he is rewilding seven acres and a hedge.

THE NOURISHING ASIAN KITCHEN Nutrient-Dense Recipes for Health and Healing

Sophia Nguyen Eng

Featuring over 100 recipes that utilise whole foods, classic ferments and healing spices, Sophia Nguyen Eng presents an innovative approach to Asian cuisine through nutritious, garden-to-plate meals. When Sophia started a permaculture farm in the Appalachian Mountains, she was determined to honour the cultural food traditions of her parents, who fled Vietnam in 1975. Her childhood meals drew inspiration across East and Southeast Asia, but preparing these dishes in the United States often relied on heavily processed ingredients with artificial flavours. Inspired by the nutritional research of Dr Weston A. Price, the regenerative farming practices taking hold across the country, as well as traditional family recipes, Sophia has curated

a collection of wholesome dishes designed to nourish the body. From hot pot to tempura, kimchi to pho, these recipes focus on ingredient quality, seasonality and eating nose-to-tail. Sophia Nguyen Eng is a first-generation Vietnamese-American who left her Silicon Valley tech career to start a five-acre permaculture farm in eastern Tennessee. A sought-after speaker, she now presents on food, farming, health and homesteading. Sophia is also a Weston A. Price Chapter Leader and the founder of the website Sprinkle with Soil. With her husband, Tim, she raises grass-fed dairy cows, beef cattle, laying hens, broilers, ducks, sheep, goats, and turkeys, and grows a variety of produce for her multi-generational family and local community. WALL STREET’S WAR ON WORKERS

How Mass Layoffs and Greed Are Destroying the Working Class and What to Do About It

Les Leopold

Layoffs upend people’s lives, cause enormous stress and lead to debilitating personal debt. Their societal harm has been known for decades – yet we do little to stop them. Wall Street’s War on Workers reveals how corporations have used mass layoffs and stock buybacks to enrich shareholders – often at the expense of employees. As co-founder of the Labor Institute, Les Leopold places US labour practices in the broader context of our social and political life, ranging from the opioid crisis to the impact financial strip mining and legalised looting are having on the integrity of democratic institutions. He explains why these layoffs occur and how current legislation allows companies to turn them into short-term financial gains.

Both ground-breaking and urgent, Wall Street’s War on Workers not only offers solutions that could halt this phenomenon, but also offers new hope for workers everywhere. Les Leopold graduated from Oberlin College and Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs. He co-founded the Labor Institute in 1976, a non-profit organisation that designs research and educational programmes on occupational safety and health, the environment and economics for worker organisations. He is currently working to build a national economic educational train-the-trainer program with unions and community groups.

THE LOST FLOCK

Rare Wool, Wild Isles and One Woman’s Journey to Save Scotland’s Original Sheep

Jane Cooper

The Lost Flock is the story of the remarkable and rare little horned sheep and the woolobsessed woman who moved to one of Scotland’s wildest islands to save them. It was Jane Cooper’s passion for knitting that led her to discover the world of rare-breed sheep and their wool. Through this, Jane uncovered the ‘Orkney Borerary’ – a unique group within the UK’s rarest breed of sheep, the Borerary, and one of the few surviving examples of primitive sheep in northern Europe. As her knowledge of this rarest of heritage breeds grew, she took the bold step to uproot her quiet suburban life in Newcastle and relocate to Orkney, embarking on a new life as a farmer and shepherd.

Jane Cooper grew up in North Warwickshire and learned to knit when she was very young. In 2013 Jane and her husband Paul moved to Orkney and got their first Borerary sheep and in 2017 Jane discovered that she was the sole custodian of the last remnants of the ‘Lost Flock’ of Borerary sheep. There are now eight flocks of Borerary sheep in Orkney.

Ru Callender wanted to become a pioneering undertaker to offer people a more honest experience than the stilted formality of traditional ‘Victorian’ funerals. Driven by raw emotion and unresolved grief, Ru brought an outsider, ‘DIY’ ethos to the business of death, combined with the kinship and inspiration he found in rave culture, social outlaws and political nonconformists. This book celebrates the creation of truly authentic experiences to commemorate those who are no longer here and those who remain. World rights available

POLITICS & BIG IDEAS AT WORK IN THE RUINS

Finding Our Place in the Time of Science, Climate Change, Pandemics and All the Other Emergencies

Dougald Hine

09 FEBRUARY 2023 9781645021841 224pp, HB, 216 x 140 mm £22.00 Nature & Environment / Big Ideas

World-renowned thinker Dougald Hine has spent most of his life talking to people about climate change, until he realised he had nothing left to say on the matter. Why would someone who cares so deeply stop talking about climate change now? At Work in the Ruins is Dougald’s attempt to answer that question. He writes that we are unaware of the nature of the crises ahead of us, leading to ‘solutions’ that can only make things worse. Dougald reflects on our long history of asking too much of science and offers guidance to help us find the work that is worth doing, even in the ruins. Swedish, French and Korean rights sold

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF TOTALITARIANISM Mattias Desmet

‘[Desmet] is waking a lot of people up to the dangerous place we are now.’ Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

16 JUNE 2022 9781645021728 240pp, HB 229 x 152 mm £22.00, B&W illustrations throughout Politics & Public Policy

The world is in the grips of mass formation—a dangerous, collective type of hypnosis—as we bear witness to loneliness, anxiety and fear giving way to censorship and loss of privacy and freedom. It is all spurred by a singular, focused crisis narrative that forbids dissident views and relies on groupthink. In The Psychology of Totalitarianism, world-renowned Professor of Clinical Psychology Mattias Desmet deconstructs the societal conditions that allow this collective psychosis to take hold and why it can lead to totalitarian regimes.
