HOOFPRINTS ON THE LAND
How Traditional Herding and Grazing Can Restore the Soil and Bring Animal Agriculture Back in Balance with the Earth
Ilse Köhler-Rollefson, Foreword by Fred Provenza
Perfect for fans of English Pastoral and Wilding, Hoofprints on the Land shows that herding cultures are not a thing of the past but a regenerative model for the future.
Hoofprints on the Land is a fascinating and lyrical book exploring the ancient working partnerships between people and animals. UN advocate and camel conservationist Ilse Köhler-Rollefson writes a passionate rallying cry for those invisible and forgotten herding cultures that exist all over the world and how by embracing these traditional nomadic practices, we can help restore and regenerate the Earth. Ilse has spent the last 30 years living with and studying the Raika camel herders in Rajasthan, India and she shows how pastoralists can address many of the problems humanity faces.
Ilse Köhler-Rollefson lives in Rajasthan, India where she owns a small herd of camels and has co-founded the country’s first camel dairy. Her work has been recognised by the Maharaja of Jodhpur and she has received India’s highest award for women from its president as well as the Order of Merit from the President of Germany. Ilse is regularly quoted and interviewed by mainstream media, including the BBC, Forbes India and the Hindustan Times and she has given a TEDx Talk about the nomads that feed us.

THE MEANING OF GEESE
A Thousand Miles in Search of Home Nick
Acheson
The Meaning of Geese is the story of Nick Acheson’s love for the land in which he was born and raised and for the wild geese that fill it with sound and spectacle every winter.
During a time when many people faced the prospect of little work or human contact, renowned naturalist and conservationist Nick Acheson spent countless hours observing wild geese, transported through all weathers by his mother’s 40-year-old trusty red bicycle. In The Meaning of Geese he meticulously details their arrival to Norfolk reflecting on what they mean to his beloved countryside – and what role the birds could play in our changing world.
Nick followed the pinkfeet and brent geese , keeping a diary of his sightings as well as the stories he discovered through the community of
people who loved them too. Over seven months Nick cycles 1,200 miles – the exact length of the pinkfeet’s migration to Iceland.
Nick Acheson grew up in North Norfolk. For the past fifteen years, Nick has worked for conservation NGOs in the UK, most notably Norfolk Wildlife Trust. He is an ambassador for both Norfolk Wildlife Trust and Pensthorpe, a trustee of Felbeck Trust and a recent president of the historic Norfolk and Norwich Naturalists’ Society. Nick has written for three of the Seasons anthologies, Red Sixty Seven, Low-Carbon Birding, British Birds, British Wildlife and BBC Wildlife. This is his first book.

AT WORK IN THE RUINS
Finding Our Place in the Time of Science, Climate Change, Pandemics and All the Other Emergencies Dougald Hine
Invited to speak at gatherings with scientists, policymakers, archbishops, indigenous activists and students, Dougald Hine has spent most of his life talking to people about climate change. And then one afternoon, he realised he had nothing left to say.
‘Why would someone who cares so deeply about ecological destruction want to stop talking about climate change now?’ At Work in the Ruins is Dougald’s attempt to answer that question.
Dougald explores what happens when our societies ask too much of science, expecting definitive explanations and turning it into an object of faith and political authority. It is a book for anyone who has found themselves needing to make sense of what we’ve been through the
last couple years – as only then can we face the depth of the trouble we are in and find the work that is worth doing in the ruins.
Dougald Hine is a social thinker, writer and speaker. After an early career as a BBC journalist, he co-founded organisations including the Dark Mountain Project and a school called HOME. At Work in the Ruins concludes the work that began with Uncivilization: The Dark Mountain Manifesto (2009), co-written with Paul Kingsnorth.

LOVE, NATURE, MAGIC
Shamanic Journeys into the Heart of My Garden Maria Rodale
Join bestselling author and activist Maria Rodale on her shamanic journeys as she reflects on her surprising conversations with the spirits of the familiar plants and animals around us.
In Love, Nature, Magic, organic advocate and former CEO of a global health and wellness company, Maria Rodale combines her love of nature and gardening with her experience in shamanic journeying, embarking on an epic adventure to learn from plants, animals and insects – including some of the most misunderstood beings in nature. Maria asks them their purpose and listens as they show and declare what they want us humans to know.
Along the way, she tells her own story of how she learned about shamanic journeying and
its near-universal manifestation in traditional cultures worldwide. She describes what her experiences of shamanic journeying are like –simply, honestly and with a touch of irreverence.
Maria Rodale is an author, artist, activist and recovering CEO, she serves on the board of the Rodale Institute and is also a former board cochair. Throughout her career, she has advocated for the potential of organic regenerative farming to heal the damage wrought by pesticides and industrial agricultural practices. BIOCIVILISATIONS
A New Look at the Science of Life Predrag B. Slijepčević
Biocivilisations is a fascinating, original and important exploration into how complex civilisations existed on Earth long before humans.
What is life? This is arguably the most important question in all of science. Many scientists believe life can be reduced to ‘mechanistic’ factors, such as genes and information codes. Everything can be sequenced and explained. But in a world as rich and complex as this one, can such an assertion really be true?
Biocivilisations is a groundbreaking book exploring the mysteries of life and its deep uncertainty. Dr Predrag Slijepčević explains how bacteria, amoebas, plants, insects, birds, whales, elephants and countless other species not only preceded human beings but also demonstrate
elements of complex civilisation. More than 99.99 percent of life on Earth has existed without humanity and life will continue without humans long into the future.
Predrag Slijepčević is a senior lecturer and research coordinator in the department of life sciences at Brunel University, London. He is a bio-scientist interested in the philosophy of biology. Predrag investigates how biological systems, from bacteria to animals and beyond, perceive and process environmental stimuli (biological information) and how this processing affects the organism-environment interactions. He has published widely in peer-review journals across all areas of the book. Biocivilisations is his first book.

Life, Death and the Human Art of Undertaking Rupert Callender
‘[What Remains?] basically invents a new type of lifestyle aspiration: deathstyle.’ The Times ‘Callender’s joyous, thought-provoking book is an account of how his own early encounters with bereavement led to him becoming a new kind of undertaker.’ Daily Mail
Ru Callender wanted to become a pioneering undertaker in order to offer people a more honest experience than the stilted formality of traditional ‘Victorian’ funerals. Driven by the unresolved grief of losing his own parents, Ru brought an outsider, ‘DIY’ ethos to the business of death, combined with the kinship and inspiration he found in rave culture and acid house. What Remains? will change the way you think about life, death and the human experience.

Rob Hopkins

‘Rob Hopkins puts imagination back at the heart of future-dreaming, offering us an irresistible invitation to dream bigger and then make those dreams a reality.’ Kate Raworth
Rob Hopkins asks the most important question that society has somehow forgotten ‘What if?’, and explores what we must do to revive and replenish our collective imagination. If we can rekindle that precious creative spark, whole societies and cultures can change rapidly, dramatically and unexpectedly for the better. There really is no end to what we might accomplish.
