Il prossimo 22 dicembre ricorre il centenario della morte di Santa Francesca Saverio Cabrini avvenuta al Columbus Hospital di Chicago nel 1917. Fondatrice in Codogno, nel lontano 1880 dell’Istituto delle Missionarie del Sacro Cuore di Gesù, Madre Cabrini con le sue straordinarie opere in Italia, Europa e nelle Americhe ha soccorso i migranti, i bisognosi, gli ammalati, gli orfani, i più umili, curando in modo particolare la formazione educativa e religiosa dei giovani, in un contesto storico molto difficile, specialmente per le donne in generale. La sua grande fede religiosa, trasmessa in continuazione alle Consorelle, ha fatto sì che ancora oggi, dopo ben 137 anni dalla fondazione l’Istituto, sotto la guida delle varie Madri Generali che si sono succedute nel tempo sia ancora presente e attivo nei cinque continenti, sempre in soccorso dei più deboli.

La Pro Loco cittadina non poteva dimenticare una tale importante ricorrenza. Pertanto, grazie all’aiuto di Banca Centropadana e Pellini Industrie, sponsor generosi che da subito hanno aderito all’iniziativa, il Consiglio Direttivo all’unanimità, per ringraziare tutte le Missionarie Cabriniane per la loro continua opera, ha voluto ricordare la Madre fondatrice dell’Istituto con questa pubblicazione. La vita della Santa, i suoi innumerevoli viaggi, le sue realizzazioni vengono qui riproposti attraverso i bellissimi disegni dell’artista codognese Andrea Viani, corredati da racconti didascalici curati da Suor Maria Barbagallo M.S.C. Next December 22 marks the hundredth anniversary of the death of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini at the Columbus Hospital in Chicago in 1917. Founder of the Institute of Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Codogno back in 1880, through her extraordinary works, Mother Cabrini aided migrants, the needy, the sick, orphans and the humblest in Italy, Europe and the Americas, giving special emphasis to the educational and religious training of youth in a very difficult historical context, particularly for women in general. Her great religious faith that she continually transmitted to the sisters was such that even 137 years after the foundation of the Institute, under the guidance of the various successive Mothers General, it is still present and working on five continents, giving succor to the weak.

The local tourist board wished to celebrate this important anniversary. Thanks to the help of Banca Centropadana and Pellini Industrie, generous sponsors who promptly supported the initiative, the Executive Committee thanked all the Cabrinian missionaries for their continuing work by commemorating the founding Mother of the Institute in this publication. The life of the Saint, her innumerable voyages and her achievements are represented here in the beautiful drawings of Andrea Viani, an artist from Codogno, together with captions recounting the story edited by Sister Maria Barbagallo, M.S.C..

Un libro per ripercorrere, nel centenario della morte di Santa Francesca Cabrini, le tappe più salienti della vita di questa santa, per fare emergere il valore di una grande donna lombarda che, con la sua profonda fede e la sua instancabile opera è oggi più che mai testimone coerente dei contenuti della dottrina sociale della Chiesa. Da Chicago a New Orleans, da New York a Boston, da Rio de Janeiro a San Paolo, da Buenos Aires a Managua, dovunque c’era bisogno di una testimonianza cristiana, là vi era Santa Francesca Cabrini con le sue suore, al fianco dei tanti emigrati italiani bisognosi diassistenza.

“Una Suora con la valigia” che valicò a cavallo la Cordigliera delle Ande, che attraversò l’Atlantico numerose volte, che percorse le terre del Nord e del Centro America, del Brasile, dell’Argentina e di molti stati dell’Europa per fondare scuole, ospedali, orfanatrofi.

Una piccola grande donna in grado di consentire alle numerose comunità di italiani di inserirsi pienamente nel contesto sociale e culturale in cui si erano trasferiti, di apprenderne la lingua e di contribuire al suo progresso, esprimendo al meglio le loro qualità e la ricchezza del patrimonio culturale e religioso che portavano dall’Italia. Una giovane maestrina che a Codogno ha fondato la congregazione delle Missionarie del Sacro Cuore che ancor oggi rappresentano, con la preghiera, l’esempio e le opere una preziosa testimonianza di fede e di carità cristiana. Una Santa che Codogno ama e che, con il suo esempio, ci indica ancor oggi la strada per promuovere la difesa della vita e della dignità della persona umana.

A book tracing the most significant stages of the life of Saint Frances Cabrini on the hundredth anniversary of her death, highlighting the value of a great woman from Lombardy whose deep faith and tireless work today more than ever bear consistent witness to the contents of the Church’s social doctrine. From Chicago to New Orleans, from New York to Boston, from Rio de Janeiro to San Paulo, from Buenos Aires to Managua, wherever there was need of Christian testimony, there was Saint Frances Cabrini with her sisters at the side of so many Italian emigrants who needed help. “A sister with a suitcase” who crossed the Cordillera of the Andes on horseback, who crossed the Atlantic numerous times, who travelled the lands of North and Central America, Brazil, Argentina and many other states in Europe to establish schools, hospitals and orphanages. A small great woman who enabled so many Italian communities to integrate fully with the social and cultural context to which they had moved, to learn the local language and to contribute to its progress, bringing out the best in them and the richness of the cultural and religious heritage which they brought from Italy. A young teacher who had founded the congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Codogno whose prayers, example and works are still today a precious testimony of faith and Christian charity. A beloved saint of Codogno who by her example continues to show us the way to promote the defence of life and the dignity of the human being.

Chissà se cento anni fa Santa Francesca Cabrini, chiudendo gli occhi per sempre da quel mondo già “grande e terribile”, fosse tanto consapevole che il suo messaggio d’amore e fratellanza avrebbe resistito così a lungo e sarebbe diventato così attuale in questo primo ventennio del XXI secolo? Un interrogativo al quale bisognerebbe rispondere andandosi a rileggere le sue lettere, i precetti lasciati in eredità alle consorelle, gli itinerari dei suoi viaggi per le Americhe del Nord e del Sud ed in luoghi a fine Ottocento ancora impervi e pericolosi e soprattutto osservando e studiando le opere di bene che le fecero guadagnare l’appellativo di Madre degli Emigranti. Di certo, la santa di Sant’Angelo Lodigiano seppe affrontare la questione cruciale, allora come oggi, di un mondo in cambiamento che faticava a comprendere e ad accogliere chi arrivava da lontano, con il suo carico di speranze e di sogni; e lo fece con le gigantesche risorse della fede e della carità proprio in quei posti in cui gli uomini e le donne si ripiegavano a difesa di se stessi e delle loro paure.

Per l’appunto in un mondo, ieri come oggi, agli occhi di quell’umanità piccola e marginale, fattosi ancor più “grande e terribile”.

Who knows if one hundred years ago Saint Frances Cabrini when she closed her eyes on this already “huge and terrifying” world thought that her message of love and fraternity would have resisted for so long and that it would have become so topical in the first two decades of this century? To find the answer to that we must go back and read her letters, the precepts she left to her sisters, the itineraries of her voyages to North and South America and to places which at the end of the 1800s were still inaccessible and dangerous, and, most of all, we must study her good works which earned her the title of Mother of Immigrants. It is certain that the saint from Sant’Angelo Lodigiano was able to take on the question, as crucial today as it was in those times, of a changing world that found it hard to understand and receive those arriving from far away places with their baggage of hopes and dreams. She did so with the gigantic resources of faith and charity in those very places where men and women bent under the burden of fear struggled to defend themselves. Precisely in a world, yesterday as today, that in the eyes of that small and emarginated humanity looks even more “huge and terrifying”.

La Pro Loco della Città di Codogno rende omaggio a Santa Francesca Saverio Cabrini con la presente pubblicazione. È apprezzabile per contenuto e forma espressiva e sono certo che avvicinerà i lettori, specie i più giovani, all’attualità della sua testimonianza. Ne sono lieto e riconoscente, insieme alla Chiesa di Lodi, che si lascerà accompagnare dalla “patrona dei migranti” in questo anno pastorale dedicato alla “missione evangelica”. Santa Francesca è “nostra”! Anche al di là dell’oceano mantenne della terra lodigiana il carattere distintivo: l’apertura solidale, senza confini geografici, culturali e spirituali, alimentata dalla fede nel Vangelo, quale valore guida dell’intera sua vita. Messaggio e opere cabriniane divennero la “notizia buona”, che alimentava di speranza gli innumerevoli connazionali costretti ad abbandonare il nostro Paese in cerca di dignità. Le stava a cuore la loro accoglienza sociale, il lavoro e l’educazione da garantire a tutti in una assistenza spirituale e materiale che privilegiasse solo i più deboli. Era questo l’assillo che le faceva dire: “troppo piccolo è il mondo per me”. Il Sacro Cuore di Gesù fu il suo segreto. Lo attestavano la luminosità penetrante dello sguardo e la travolgente attività perché gli italiani fossero rispettati e stimati (cfr tavola 16^). Non a caso il Reliquiario che a Codogno custodisce il cuore di Madre Cabrini riporta questa considerazione evangelica: “dov’è il tuo tesoro, là sarà anche il tuo cuore” (Mt 6,21). Nata a Sant’Angelo Lodigiano nel 1850, Francesca scelse Codogno per avviare l’Istituto delle Missionarie del Sacro Cuore, dopo il “primo passo” compiuto come insegnante a Castiraga Vidardo. Mi sono recato in quella comunità il 15 luglio 2017, anniversario della sua nascita, annunciando la partenza del parroco per la missione diocesana in Uruguay. Lo spirito della Cabrini è tuttora fecondo, come il suo appello alla fraternità universale. L’ho constatato nel recente pellegrinaggio coi lodigiani negli Stati Uniti d’America e, particolarmente, a Chicago, dove si spense il 22 dicembre 1917. L’attenzione che le riserva la Pro Loco di Codogno si configura, perciò, in tutta la sua lodevole sensibilità culturale. E merita i migliori rallegramenti.

The Codogno Tourist Office pays tribute to Saint Frances Cabrini with this publication. It is commendable for its form and expressive content and I am certain that it will bring readers, especially the younger ones, closer to the contemporary realities of her testimony. I am pleased and grateful for it together with the church of Lodi that is being accompanied this year by the Patron Saint of Immigrants during the pastoral year dedicated to the evangelical mission.

Saint Frances is “one of ours”! Even on the far side of the ocean she maintained the distinctive character of the Lodi area – the sympathetic sensitivity that knows no geographic, cultural or spiritual boundaries, nourished by faith in the Gospel as the guiding value all throughout life. The Cabrinian message and good works became the “good news” that gave hope to the innumerable fellow citizens forced to abandon our country in search of dignity. She took to heart their acceptance in society, work and education to ensure to all spiritual and material assistance that favoured only the needy. This was the obsession that led her to say, “the world is too small for me”. The Sacred Heart of Jesus was her secret. The penetrating luminosity of her glance and her overwhelming efforts to ensure that Italians were respected and esteemed testified to that (see table 16^).

It was not by chance that the reliquary bears this evangelical message “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Born in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano in 1850, after her early beginnings as a teacher in Castiraga Vidardo, Frances chose Codogno as the place to establish the Institute of Missionaries of the Sacred Heart after her. I visited that community on July 15, 2017, the anniversary of her birth, announcing the departure of the parish priest for a diocesan mission in Uruguay. The Cabrini spirit is still fertile, just as is her appeal for universal fraternity. I noticed this in the recent pilgrimage with the people from Lodi to the United States, and in particular, to Chicago where she died on December 22, 1917. The regard for her that the Codogno Tourist Office has shown is one of laudable cultural sensitivity. It deserves our sincere congratulations.

Codogno non è località di poco conto nella biografia di santa Francesca Saverio Cabrini: qui essa ha dato avvio alla sua opera e qui ha avuto riferimenti determinanti per la sua impresa. Loriconosce lei stessa quando scrive (settembre 1899): “Ella (la Vergine Maria) ha fondato (il nostro Istituto), perché mentre io stavo titubante se il Signore volesse o no quest’opera, molti pregavano la Vergine SS. delle Grazie, ed io pure la pregavo e dopo molte preghiere … Monsignor Serrati vi diede la mano con grande fervore e slancio” (Tra un’onda e l’altra, 11,8). A più riprese Madre Cabrini attribuisce alla Madonna delle Grazie la fondazione dell’Istituto, a cominciare dalla grazia di aver trovato la prima casa proprio dietro l’abside della chiesa dei Frati, che ne custodisce l’immagine.

Mons. Antonio Serrati, parroco di Codogno dal 1873 al 1895, ebbe parte notevole nel sorgere dell’Istituto e nella stagione lodigiana della santa, da lui conosciuta a Vidardo; la Madre stessa lo attesta, riconoscendolo co-fondatore. Codogno ha l’onore di ospitare la culla di una impresa di cui probabilmente non sospettava la straordinaria espansione.

Qui, vivente la Madre, si sono formate per la missione centinaia di religiose; e il ruolo della Casa Madre come centro di formazione dell’Istituto è proseguito per decenni. Originarie di Codogno sono alcune delle prime compagne della Madre, testimoni e protagoniste della nascita di questa comunità; altre se ne sono aggiunte negli anni seguenti segno del lavoro della grazia nel cuore di nostre concittadine. Insieme alle consacrate, anche uomini e donne della città hanno accolto con simpatia la presenza di questo dono e lo hanno favorito con collaborazione discreta e sincera, guadagnando per la vita di questa comunità un po’ di ardore missionario della Fondatrice e quel sentimento evangelico dell’accoglienza che si è espresso fin dall’anno della morte della Santa, quando furono accolti a Codogno un migliaio di sfollati dalla località di Solagna, sul fronte della prima guerra mondiale.

Dalle fatiche missionarie di Madre Cabrini, il mondo ha guadagnato una conoscenza maggiore dell’amore del Signore, come intende attestare anche questa pubblicazione; e Codogno resta onorata perché, insieme al ricordo di Madre Cabrini, non raramente risuona anche il nome della borgata da cui si è sprigionato un incredibile slancio missionario.

Codogno is a place of no small account in the biography of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini. It was here that she began her work and found points of reference that were determining factors in her mission.

She herself acknowledged it in her letter of September 1899 “She (the Virgin Mary) founded our (institute) because while I was hesitating about whether or not our Lord wanted this work, many prayed to the Most Blessed Virgin, and I prayed to her as well and after many prayers … Monsignor Serrati gave a helping hand with great fervor and impetus” (Tra un’onda e l’altra, 11.8). On several occasions, Mother Cabrini attributed the foundation of the Institute to our Lady of Grace, the first grace of which was that of finding its own house just behind the apse of the church of the Friars which houses her image. Monsignor Antonio Serrati, the parish priest of Codogno from 1873 to 1895 and who knew her from Vidardo, played a large part in establishing the Institute during the saint’s sojourn in the Lodi area. Mother Cabrini herself attested to that in recognizing him as a co-founder.

Codogno has the honor of being home to the cradle of an initiative and it probably never suspected how extraordinarily far-reaching it would become. Here during the Mother’s lifetime, hundreds of nuns were trained as missionaries and the role of the Mother House as a training center for the Institute continued for decades. Some of the first companions of the Mother came from Codogno, witnesses to and protagonists of the birth of this community. Others joined in later years, a sign of the grace working in the hearts of our fellow citizens. Men and women of the town together with the nuns warmly embraced the presence of this gift and supported it with discretion and sincerity, earning for this community a little of the missionary ardor of the founder. That same welcoming evangelical feeling was expressed as early as the year when the saint died and Codogno gave shelter to a thousand people evacuated from Solagna in World War I. Through the missionary work of Mother Cabrini, the world has gained greater knowledge of the love of the Lord, as this publication is intended to attest. And Codogno continues to be honored since, together with the memory of Mother Cabrini, the name of the village whence sprang this incredible missionary impetus is also mentioned.

Codogno, in Italia, è il luogo natio dell’Istituto fondato da Santa Francesca Cabrini. E’ in questa piccola città situata nel nord d’Italia che questa gigantesca figura missionaria è cresciuta nella sua convinzione e nel suo coraggio. Codogno è il luogo dove centinaia di giovani si sono unite a Madre Cabrini per essere Missionarie del Sacro Cuore. Da Codogno questo manipolo di donne si è diretto verso tutti gli angoli della terra per portare al mondo l’amore di Cristo.

A cento anni dalla morte di Madre Cabrini voglio ringraziare la Pro-Loco per aver contribuito a tenere viva oggi la sua storia. Madre Cabrini chiamava Codogno “casa” e Codogno continua ad apprezzare la sua figlia natale. Madre Cabrini e Codogno non si possono scindere. Finché la Pro-Loco continuerà a promuovere il ricordo di questa donna, Codogno e Madre Cabrini rimarranno per sempre uno parte dell’altra.

Estendo la mia gratitudine anche alla Municipalità e alla Città di Codogno per il loro generoso abbraccio verso Madre Cabrini. Questo libretto non è solo un tributo a Madre Cabrini, ma anche alla gente, di ieri e di oggi, di questa meravigliosa città di Codogno situata nel nord d’Italia.

Codogno Italy is the birthplace of the Institute founded by Saint Frances Cabrini. It is in this small town nestled in northern Italy where this giant missionary grew in conviction and courage. Codogno is the place where hundreds of young women joined Mother Cabrini as Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. From Codogno this band of women went to all the ends of the earth to bear the love of Christ to the world.

One hundred years after the death of Mother Cabrini I want to thank Pro-Loco for helping to keep her story alive today. Mother Cabrini called Codogno “home” and Codogno continues to appreciate their native daughter. Mother Cabrini and Codogno cannot be separated. As long as Pro-Loco continues promoting the remembrance of this woman, Codogno and Mother Cabrini will forever remain part of one another.

Sant’Angelo Lodigiano il Signor Agostino Cabrini era soprannominato “il Cristianone”, perché oltre ad essere un ottimo padre di famiglia era un bravo lavoratore e un buon cristiano. Aveva avuto undici figli. Nel momento della nascita della decima figlia, il cortile fu invaso da uno stuolo di colombe, attratte dal frumento che era steso a terra ad asciugare. Una colomba era rimasta impigliata nella frusta di Agostino e, proprio in quel momento gli annunciarono la nascita della bambina che fu chiamata Francesca. Agostino liberò la colomba che volò lontano. Era il 15 Luglio del 1850. Per questo ogni anno, il 15 Luglio a Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, viene celebrato con un simbolico volo di colombe.

n Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, Agostino Cabrini was nicknamed “the big Christian since he was not only an excellent family man but was also a good worker and a good Christian.

He had sired eleven children. When the tenth child was born the courtyard was invaded by a flock of doves attracted by the grain spread on the ground to dry. One of the doves had become entangled in Agostino’s flail at the very moment they told him that the baby had been born and called Frances. Agostino freed the dove, which flew off. It was July 15, 1850. That is the reason why each July 15 Sant’Angelo Lodigiano celebrates the date with a symbolic flight of doves

nche la signora Stella Oldini, sposa di Agostino, era una eccellente madre che educò con saggezza e amore i suoi bambini, alcuni dei quali però morirono presto. Ne rimasero solo quattro: Rosa la maggiore, Maddalena, Giovanni Battista e Francesca che chiamavano “Cecchina”. Siccome Papà Agostino soleva raccontare le storie che le riviste missionarie riportavano, la piccola Cecchina iniziò subito a sognare e a desiderare di essere anche lei una Missionaria. E fu felice il giorno che incontrò un missionario che spiegava ai bambini l’importanza di dedicare la propria vita alla Missione.

gostino’s wife, Stella Oldini, was also an excellent mother who brought up her children wisely and lovingly; some of them, however, died at an early age. The remaining four were Rosa, the oldest, Maddalena, Giovanni Battista and Frances whom they nicknamed “Cecchina”. Since Father Agostino used to tell them stories that he found in the missionary magazines, little Cecchina began very early to dream fondly of becoming a missionary herself. Happy was the day when she met a missionary who explained to the children how important it was to dedicate one’s own life to the Mission.

Nei suoi giochi, c’erano barchette piene di violette, ma per lei erano bastimenti che portavano Missionarie. espite the strict upbringing imposed by her sister, Rose, who was fifteen years older and who often mortified her in order to bring her up to be humble and realistic, Cecchina continued to cherish her dreams. She imagined herself as a missionary setting off for faraway places, especially in the Far East and China. She played with little boats loaded with violets but she imagined them to be vessels that carried missionaries. At Livraga you can still see the Venera canal where little Frances played with her paper boats.

rancesca cresceva sostenuta dai suoi sogni. Non mancava la sofferenza alla sua famiglia: la morte prematura di tanti fratellini, poi anche della Mamma e del Papà. Nel 1868 prese il Diploma di Maestra. Pregava e sperava di diventare una Religiosa, mentre si occupava di visitare i poveri e i malati, specialmente durante una brutta epidemia di vaiolo. Fu contagiata anche Francesca che riuscì a superare la malattia proprio quando, nel 1873, il suo Parroco, Mons. Bassano Dedè, le chiese di supplire una maestra a Vidardo, piccolo centro poco lontano da Sant’Angelo Lodigiano. La giovane maestrina accettò dando prova delle sue capacità pedagogiche, organizzative e pastorali.

F

rances grew up sustained by her dreams. Her family was not without its trials and tribulations where so many little brothers and sisters died early, followed by the deaths of her mother and then her father. She earned her teaching certificate in 1868. She prayed and hoped to become a religious and she kept herself busy visiting the poor and the sick, particularly during a bad smallpox epidemic. Frances also caught it but, right at the time that her parish priest, Mons. Bassano Dedè, asked her to supply-teach for a teacher at Vidardo, a small community not far from Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, she managed to pull through. The young teacher accepted and gave proof of her pedagogical, organizational and pastoral talents.

Vidardo, Francesca conobbe il Parroco, Mons. Antonio Serrati, sacerdote nobile di animo e di famiglia il quale nell’estate del 1873 era stato trasferito a Codogno. Qui il nuovo Parroco trovò alcune gravi difficoltà. Un piccolo orfanotrofio, retto da due signore che lo avevano fondato, presentava vari problemi organizzativi e gestionali. Per questo ed per altri motivi, il Vescovo di Lodi, Mons. Domenico Gelmini, desiderava dare una nuova organizzazione alla piccola Casa, detta “della Provvidenza”, facendola diventare un Istituto Religioso.

Per questo progetto riorganizzativo sia il Parroco Serrati, che il Vescovo ed altri prelati, pensarono di affidare il compito alla giovane maestra di Vidardo. Era il 1874.

I

n Vidardo, Frances met the parish priest, Mons. Antonio Serrati, noble both of mind and of family, who was transferred to Codogno in the summer of 1873. There the priest encountered a series of serious difficulties. A small orphanage run by the two women who had founded it was beset by various organizational and managerial problems. For that and other reasons, the Bishop of Lodi, Mons. Domenico Gelmini, wanted to give the small home called “Providence” a new organization, turning it into a religious institute.

Both Mons. Serrati, the Bishop and other prelates wanted to assign the project of reorganizing it to the young teacher of Vidardo. That was 1874.

on era quello che Francesca desiderava. Dopo molte perplessità decise di accettare poiché le avevano promesso che si sarebbe trattato di un incarico di pochi mesi.

Rimase invece per sei anni nella Casa della Provvidenza, dove Francesca venne accolta come un’intrusa. Soffrì rifiuto e umiliazioni ma intuiva che quella situazione era una preparazione al progetto che Dio aveva preparato per lei, ma che lei non conosceva.

Infatti, nel 1880, lo stesso Vescovo, Domenico Gelmini, comprendendo che era inutile sacrificare i sogni di Francesca, la mandò a chiamare e le propose: “Fonda tu un Istituto missionario”. Francesca rispose: “Cercherò una Casa”. Il 14 Novembre 1880 nasceva così l’Istituto delle Missionarie del Sacro Cuore di Gesù e la casa che Francesca aveva trovato era un vecchio convento francescano situato dietro la Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie.

hat was not what Frances had in mind. After much hesitation, she decided to accept since they promised her that it would only be for a few months. Instead, she remained at the Providence Home for six years where she found herself treated as an intruder. She suffered rejection and humiliation but felt that the situation was a preparation for the plan that God had prepared for her but which she did not know. In 1880, Bishop Domenico Gelmini realized that it was pointless to sacrifice Frances’ dreams and sent for her saying “You go and set up a missionary institute”. Frances replied “I shall search for a home”.

Thus, on November 14, 1880 the Institute of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was born and the home that Frances had discovered was an old Franciscan convent located behind the Church of Our Lady of Grace.

a vita nel nuovo Convento iniziò con gioia e speranza. Il sogno missionario accarezzato per tanti anni era diventato una realtà. Francesca aveva già sei compagne. Si aprì una scuola, un orfanotrofio, si iniziarono attività di catechesi, ritiri spirituali.

Le Missionarie si occupavano delle opere parrocchiali e dell’oratorio. Francesca era ormai Madre Cabrini, si impegnava nella formazione delle Missionarie, voleva che fossero educatrici e madri per le orfane e per chiunque avesse bisogno. Lei stessa consolava le bambine senza una famiglia. L’Istituto si ingrandiva, Parroci dei dintorni desideravano le nuove Missionarie per le loro parrocchie.

Il 14 Dicembre dello stesso anno 1880, la Diocesi firmò il Decreto di approvazione del nuovo Istituto.

L

ife in the new convent began in a climate of joy and hope. The missionary dream that she had cherished for so many years had come true. Frances already had six companions.

She opened a school and an orphanage, began catechism instruction and organized spiritual retreats. The missionaries looked after parochial works and the church recreation center.

Frances who had now become Mother Cabrini was involved in training missionaries whom she wanted to become teachers and mothers for the orphaned girls and for anyone who ever was in need. She herself comforted the little girls without a family. The institute grew and the parish priests in the vicinity wanted the new missionaries for their parishes too.

On December 14 of that same year, 1880, the diocese signed the decree approving the new institute.

adre Cabrini tuttavia, desiderava ardentemente la Missione, quella che aveva occupato il suo cuore e i suoi pensieri per tanti anni. Voleva andare a Roma, parlare con il Papa, chiedere un riconoscimento pontificio della Sua Regola e il permesso per partire per la missione dell’Oriente.

Non erano tutti d’accordo i prelati che l’avevano fino a quel momento sostenuta.

Ritenevano imprudente quell’ansia missionaria che Madre Cabrini non poteva più contenere. Pensavano che Madre Cabrini potesse occuparsi di opere e piccoli conventi del Lodigiano. Ma vinte le ultime resistenze di Mons. Antonio Serrati, la mattina del 24 Settembre 1887, accompagnata da Sr. Serafina Tommasi, Madre Cabrini partiva alla volta di Roma sulla linea: Genova-Pisa e per la prima volta vide il mare!

other Cabrini nevertheless ardently desired to go on a mission, the thing that had occupied her heart and her desires for so many years. She wanted to go to Rome and speak to the Pope to request papal recognition of her order and permission to leave for a mission in the East.

Not all the prelates who had supported her up until then agreed. They thought that such missionary eagerness that Mother Cabrini could not restrain was imprudent and that she could see to the works and small convents in the Lodi area. When Mons. Antonio Serrati’s resistance was finally overcome, in company with Sister Serafina Tommasi, Mother Cabrini took the train for Rome on the morning of September 24, 1887 and, on the Genoa-Pisa line, she saw the sea for the first time in her life!

rrivata a Roma il 25 mattina si recò subito dal Cardinal Vicario, Lucido Maria Parrocchi per spiegare il motivo della sua visita e parlare del suo desiderio di fondare una Casa a Roma. Il Cardinale la ricevette con cortesia, ma appena si rese conto che si trattava di una fondazione giovane, con poca esperienza e pochi soldi, consigliò a Madre Cabrini di desistere dal suo intento. Spiegò che a Roma c’erano già molti Istituti Religiosi, mentre a Codogno poteva svilupparsi nei dintorni e fare molto bene. Quando uscirono, alla Suora che l’accompagnava, Madre Cabrini disse: «Il Sacro Cuore gli cambierà il cuore».

Fu così infatti. Pochi giorni dopo, il Cardinal Vicario la mandò a chiamare offrendole di fondare due Case: una a Roma ed una nei dintorni. Nel riceverla Il Cardinale iniziò la conversazione dicendo: «Il Sacro Cuore mi ha cambiato il cuore».

rriving in Rome on the morning of the 25th, she immediately went to Cardinal Vicar, Lucido Maria Parrocchi, to explain the reason for her visit and to speak of her desire to found a home in Rome. The Cardinal received her courteously but as soon as he realized that it was a matter of a young foundation with little experience and little money, he advised Mother Cabrini to desist from her intent. He explained that there were already many religious institutes in Rome, whereas she could expand her work in Codogno and surroundings and would do much good. When they left the Cardinal. Mother Cabrini said to the sister accompanying her “The Sacred Heart will cause him to have a change of heart”.

And it did just that. A few days later the Cardinal Vicar sent for her and offered her the chance to found two homes, one in Rome and the other in the surrounding area. When he received her, the Cardinal began the conversation with these words, “The Sacred Heart has caused me a change of heart”.

entre si occupava della nuova fondazione a Roma, ebbe modo di conoscere il vescovo di Piacenza, Mons. Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, che voleva affidarle un’opera a Castel San Giovanni. Mons. Scalabrini aveva fondato un ordine di Padri specialmente dedicati agli emigranti. Conosciute le intenzioni di Madre Cabrini di recarsi nelle lontane missioni di Oriente, la invitò invece a recarsi negli Stati Uniti per aiutare gli emigranti italiani, che a migliaia avevano lasciato l’Italia in cerca di lavoro, di benessere e di un futuro per i loro figli e le propose di collaborare con i Padri scalabriniani. Per rinunciare all’Oriente e per decidersi, Madre Cabrini cercò di prendere tempo; fece sapere che sarebbe andata solo per invito dell’Arcivescovo di New York. Incontrandola ancora a Roma nel 1888, il Vescovo Scalabrini le corse incontro per mostrarle la lettera d’invito dell’Arcivescovo.

W

hile she was busy with the new foundation in Rome, she got to know the bishop of Piacenza, Mons. Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, who wanted to entrust her with works at Castel San Giovanni. Mons. Scalabrini had founded an order of fathers specially dedicated to immigrants. When he learned of Mother Cabrini’s intention to go on a mission to the East, he asked her instead to go to the United States to help Italian immigrants, thousands of whom had left Italy in search of a job, better living conditions and a future for their children and he suggested that she collaborate with the Scalabrinian fathers. Mother Cabrini temporized in deciding whether to give up the East and let it be known that she would go only on the invitation of the Archbishop of New York. When he met her again in Rome in 1888. Bishop Scalabrini rushed to meet her flourishing the letter of invitation from the Archbishop.

adre Cabrini era stata ricevuta una prima volta da Sua Santità il Papa Leone XIII. Con il Papa aveva subito stabilito un rapporto di fiducia e di stima. Il Papa riconobbe in lei una donna santa, audace, determinata e zelante per la missione. Madre Cabrini aveva molta fiducia in quello che avrebbe detto il Papa prima di fare la decisione definitiva. Dopo aver pregato a lungo e aver fatto pregare le sue Suore Missionarie, fu ricevuta ancora dal Papa che intuendo i bisogni dell’emigrazione, volle incoraggiare Madre Cabrini sulla nuova decisione dicendole: “Non all’Oriente, Cabrini, ma all’Occidente, andate pure in America dove troverete un grande campo di lavoro e i mezzi per l’Istituto”.

Da quel momento Madre Cabrini non pensò più all’Oriente, pur avendolo nel cuore, ma si dedicò agli emigranti italiani.o.

other Cabrini was received for the first time by His Holiness, Pope Leo XIII. She immediately established a relationship of trust and esteem with the Pope who saw her as a holy woman, audacious, determined and zealous about the mission. Mother Cabrini had great faith in what the Pope would say before she made her final decision. After much prayer, and having had her missionary sisters pray for her, she was again received by the Pope who had grasped the needs of emigration and wished to encourage Mother Cabrini to make a new decision, saying to her “Not to the East, Cabrini, but to the West, go then to America where you will find a great field for work and the means for the Institute”. From that moment on, Mother Cabrini no longer thought of the East, although it still remained in her heart, and instead she devoted herself to Italian immigrants.

l 19 Marzo 1889, Madre Cabrini con altre sei Missionarie intraprendeva il suo primo viaggio missionario. Prima tappa a Parigi poi il 23 Marzo s’imbarcava a Le Havre sulla Bourgogne della Transatlantica francese. Quella prima esperienza la immerse immediatamente nel mondo degli emigranti, nel dramma del loro distacco dall’Italia, dalla casa, dalla famiglia e nel dramma della loro incertezza del futuro. Si trovò con gente povera e spesso ignorante, sostenuta solo dalla speranza del guadagno e dalla fede cristiana ereditata nel paesetto d’origine. Viaggiavano malamente in terza classe dove la Madre li andava a trovare portando loro conforto e qualcosa da mangiare.

n March 19, 1889, Mother Cabrini undertook her first missionary voyage with six other missionaries. The first stop was Paris and then, on March 23, she embarked on the French transatlantic steamer, the Bourgogne, at Le Havre. That first experience immediately plunged her into the world of immigrants, into the drama of their separation from Italy, from home, from the family and into their sense of dramatic uncertainty about the future. She found herself amidst poor people who were often ignorant, sustained only by the hope of making money and by their Christian faith that they had inherited in their own small hometown. They travelled miserably in third class where the Mother would go to see them to bring comfort and something to eat.

l 31 Marzo verso sera, il transatlantico gettava le ancore nel North River: le prime Missionarie del Sacro Cuore erano giunte a New York. La gioia dell’avventura missionaria faceva dimenticare alle Suore i disagi del mare, le paure, le incertezze del futuro. La presenza di Madre Cabrini dava loro coraggio perché tutto faceva dipendere dall’aiuto del Sacro Cuore di Gesù.

All’arrivo compresero ancora di più le sofferenze dei migranti, a volte rimandati indietro per qualche futile motivo legale, a volte divisi dagli stessi familiari con cui viaggiavano, e spesso trattati come persone senza diritti.

Intuirono subito il grande lavoro che le attendeva: dovevano essere le Madri che accolgono, proteggono e difendono la vita dei più deboli.

n March 31 towards evening, the steamship dropped anchor in the North River. The first Missionaries of the Sacred Heart had reached New York. The joy of the missionary adventure made the sisters forget the hardships of the sea, the fears and the uncertainties about the future. The presence of Mother Cabrini heartened them because she said that all would depend on the help of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

On arrival, they learned still more about the sufferings of the immigrants who were sometimes sent back for some trivial legal reason, sometimes separated from their own family members with whom they had travelled, and often treated like people without rights.

They immediately sensed the great work that lay in store for them. They were to be the mothers who took them in, protected them and defended the lives of the weakest.

’inizio della Missione fu molto difficile. L’Arcivescovo di New York che pure aveva scritto la lettera d’invito, consigliò a Madre Cabrini di tornare indietro, poiché gli accordi presi non sembravano funzionare. Madre Cabrini fece capire con tutto il rispetto, che lei era stata mandata dal Santo Padre e quindi quella era ora la sua Missione. Le Missionarie non avevano una casa da poter organizzare secondo le loro esigenze. I padri che dovevano sostenerle erano cortesi ma ambigui nelle loro decisioni. La scuola, il catechismo, l’accoglienza di bambini e adulti emigranti veniva fatta nel retro della Chiesa. Per vivere le Suore erano costrette a cercare aiuto tra gli stessi italiani della Little Italy che invece le accolsero con grande entusiasmo e le caricavano di alimenti per il loro sostentamento.

T

he beginning of the mission was very difficult. The Archbishop of New York who had indeed written the letter of invitation advised Mother Cabrini to go back since the arrangements made looked unlikely to work. Mother Cabrini respectfully gave him to understand that she had been sent by the Holy Father and that it was now therefore his mission. The missionaries had no home where they could organize for their needs. The fathers who were supposed to support them were polite but ambiguous in their decisions.

The school, catechism, reception of children and adult immigrants took place in the back of the church. In order to survive, the sisters were obliged to seek help from the Italians of Little Italy themselves who instead welcomed them with great enthusiasm and loaded them with food for their sustenance.

niziò per Madre Cabrini la travolgente avventura di viaggiatrice, sempre in moto per raggiungere i luoghi dove era chiamata in aiuto degli emigranti italiani. Attraversò l’oceano oltre 24 volte, fece viaggi lunghissimi in treno, in carrozza, a cavallo, a piedi. Le lunghe traversate erano spesso occasione di incontri con persone d’affari, intellettuali, e gente che viaggiava per piacere e soprattutto centinaia di emigranti. Quando il mare era calmo e permetteva qualche conversazione, la Madre cercava di volgere il discorso sull’amore di Dio per l’umanità, scontrandosi con opinioni contrarie che ribatteva con fermezza. Un giorno scrisse alle sue Suore: Se il Cuore di Gesù mi dà i mezzi per costruire un bastimento, allora fondo la Nave Cristoforo, e giro tutti i mari per portare l’amore di Gesù dappertutto».

T

he overwhelming adventure of travelling began for Mother Cabrini who was always on the go, travelling to places where she was called upon to help Italian immigrants. She crossed the ocean 24 times; she made very long trips by train, carriage, on horseback and on foot. The long ocean crossings were often the occasion to meet business people, intellectuals, people who travelled for pleasure and, most of all, hundreds of immigrants. When the sea was calm and it was possible to talk, Mother Cabrini attempted to bring the conversation around to God’s love of man, running up against contrary opinions, which she firmly refuted.

One day she wrote to her sisters “If the Heart of Jesus gives me the means to build a ship, then I will build the Good Ship Christopher and I will sail all the seas bringing the love of Jesus all over the world”.

D

urante i suoi lunghi viaggi madre Cabrini scriveva alle sue Suore Missionarie, alle alunne delle sue scuole, agli amici e benefattori. Scriveva della bellezza dell’aurora e del tramonto sul mare, dei suoi incontri con persone di Paesi diversi, dei pericoli e delle sue difficoltà per superare gli ostacoli e i pregiudizi che le volevano impedire di realizzare i suoi progetti per gli emigranti. Desiderava ridare loro speranza, istruirli ed integrarli nella cultura di accoglienza, ravvivare in essi la fede cristiana perché fosse la forza che dava significato alla loro esistenza.

Per scrivere i suoi diari Madre Cabrini usava matite già appuntite che le Suore le preparavano prima di ogni partenza.

n her long voyages, Mother Cabrini wrote to her missionary sisters, to the students of her schools, to friends and to benefactors. She wrote of the beauty of the dawn and the sunset on the sea, of her meetings with people from different countries, of the dangers and difficulties she had in overcoming obstacles and prejudices that attempted to prevent her from carrying out her plans for immigrants. She wanted to give hope back to them, to teach them and integrate them into the culture of the receiving country and to rekindle their Christian faith so that it would be the strength that gave meaning to their lives.

To write in her diaries, Mother Cabrini used the pencils that the sisters had sharpened for her before each of her trips.

ttratta dalla figura carismatica di Madre Cabrini, una signora dell’alta società del Nicaragua, la signora Elena Arellano, pregò la Madre di fondare una scuola per ragazze in quel Paese, dove la Massoneria e il laicismo impedivano una vera formazione religiosa. Madre Cabrini accettò volentieri imbarcandosi a New York il 10 Ottobre del 1891. Dovette affrontare prima il vorticoso Mar dei Caraibi, poi costeggiare il Centro America in un lungo viaggio con tempeste, disagi, imprevisti di ogni genere. Allo stesso tempo, affascinata dai magnifici paesaggi tropicali, giunse il 23 Ottobre al Porto di Corinto e arrivò alla città di Granada dove fondò una scuola non solo per ragazze di famiglie benestanti ma anche per piccole orfane.

Il ritorno a New York, attraverso il Rio San Juan, durò più di un mese e fu penosissimo e fortunoso, ma l’incontro con un gruppo di indigeni Moschiti che desideravano rimanesse con loro, rimase molto impresso nel cuore di Madre Cabrini.

A

ttracted by the charismatic figure of Mother Cabrini, a lady of Nicaragua’s high society, Elena Arellano, asked the Mother to establish a girls’ school in that country where Masonry and secularism prevented true religious training. Mother Cabrini was happy to accept and set sail from New York on October 10, 1891. First she had to pass through the vortical waters of the Caribbean Sea and then sailed down the coast of Central America on a long voyage that saw storms, hardships and unexpected events of every kind. She was nevertheless fascinated by the magnificent tropical scenery and reached Port of Corinto on October 23 and went on to Granada where she founded a school not only for girls from wellto-do families but for poor orphan girls as well.

The return journey to New York crossing the Rio San Juan took more than one month and was unpleasant and eventful but the meeting with a group of the indigenous Miskito tribe who wanted her to remain with them made a great impression on the heart of Mother Cabrini.

a missione in Nicaragua iniziò a fiorire, ma solo dopo 4 anni le Suore vennero espulse da un Governo palesemente ostile alla religione cattolica. Vi ritornarono dopo alcuni anni, accettando le difficoltà di una terra bellissima ma sempre minacciata da terremoti, alluvioni e guerre civili. Madre Cabrini, divenuta Santa, divenne la protettrice e consolatrice nei momenti difficili del Paese.

Tornando dalla missione del Nicaragua, Madre Cabrini fu informata su quanto era accaduto alla Colonia Italiana di New Orleans, nella Louisiana. Era stato ucciso il capo della Polizia ed erano stati accusati 11 Italiani. Dopo il processo erano stati però riconosciuti innocenti, ma appena fuori dal carcere, la folla inferocita dai pregiudizi contro di essi li uccise linciandoli. La Polizia non fece nulla per impedire il massacro.

Madre Cabrini indignata e addolorata, raggiunse rapidamente New Orleans.

T

he mission in Nicaragua began to flourish but after only four years the sisters were expelled by a government that was openly hostile to the Catholic religion. They returned there some years later, accepting the difficulties that came with a very beautiful land that always under the threat of earthquakes, floods and civil war. When Mother Cabrini was canonized, she became the patron saint and comforter in the difficult times of the country.

On her return from her mission in Nicaragua, Mother Cabrini was informed of what had happened to the Italian colony in New Orleans, Louisiana. The police chief had been murdered and eleven Italians were accused of the crime. After the trial, they were found innocent but as soon as they were released from prison, the crowd incensed by their prejudices against them set upon them and lynched them. The police did nothing to prevent the massacre.

Mother Cabrini was indignant and sick at heart and quickly went to New Orleans.

edendo il degrado in cui si trovavano gli italiani iniziò ad raccogliere i bambini dalla strada. Si adoperò per cercare una casa, fare una scuola, educarli e farli crescere sani e onesti. Il suo scopo era quello di dare una immagine dignitosa degli Italiani.

In pochi mesi, Madre Cabrini e le sue Missionarie con un lavoro assiduo e faticoso, con enormi sacrifici per vincere le opposizioni politiche e amministrative, riuscirono a migliorare le condizioni degli Italiani aiutate anche dal buon Vescovo della città.

Visitarono e penetrarono nei quartieri più poveri, esortando le famiglie a mandare i bambini a scuola ed cercando di convincere gli ammalati a farsi curare negli ospedali.

Il sabato e la domenica andavano nelle campagne circostanti dove trovavano uomini e donne oppressi sotto il peso di lavori estenuanti.

hen she saw the squalor in which the Italians lived, she began taking in children from the streets. She set about finding a home, setting up a school, and teaching them, bringing them up to be healthy and honest. She wanted to provide a dignified image of Italians. In just a few months, Mother Cabrini and her missionaries, by dint of assiduous, exhausting work and by making enormous sacrifices to overcome political and administrative opposition, were able to improve the condition of the Italians with the help of the good bishop of the city. They went visiting and ventured in to the heart of the poorest areas and exhorted the families to send their children to school and tried to convince the sick to go to hospital for treatment. Saturdays and Sundays they went into the surrounding countryside where they found men and women oppressed by the burden of exhausting work.

e Missionarie riorganizzarono le attività culturali e religiose ricorrendo all’aiuto di alcuni buoni benefattori. Fu una grande sorpresa per tutti, alla fine dell’anno scolastico, vedere sfilare, per le strade di New Orleans, centinaia di ragazze e ragazzi italiani, ben vestiti, suonando le famose arie classiche della musica lirica italiana.

Madre Cabrini amò sempre molto le missioni di New Orleans perché permetteva alle Missionarie di poter fare un lavoro pastorale con giovani e bambini e con le famiglie.

Le Missionarie andavano nelle zone rurali e nelle zone emarginate della città per far ritrovare anche agli adulti la dignità e l’orgoglio di essere italiani..

he missionaries reorganized the cultural and religious activities with the help of some good benefactors. It was a great surprise for all when they saw hundreds of well-dressed Italian girls and boys parading through the streets of New Orleans at the end of the school year playing the famous classic arias of Italian opera.

Mother Cabrini always loved the missions in New Orleans very much because the missionaries could carry out pastoral work with the youth, the children and the families.

The missionaries went into the rural countryside and the marginalized areas to help the adults as well to recover their sense of dignity and pride in being Italian.

ntanto a New York i Padri Scalabriniani si trovavano in gravi difficoltà a gestire un ospedale che era sorto per l’assistenza agli emigranti ammalati. Il Vescovo di Piacenza, Mons. Scalabrini desiderava che l’ospedale fosse affidato a Madre Cabrini e alle sue Suore. Per la Madre fu un altro momento di grande perplessità, sia perché non pensava di gestire un ospedale, sia perché le proponevano di sbrogliare una situazione complicata ed economicamente disastrata. Ma una notte sognò la Vergine Maria che vestita da infermiera accudiva un ammalato. Madre Cabrini voleva aiutarla, ma la Madonna le fece capire che stava facendo quello che lei non voleva fare. Fu sufficiente per decidersi e accettò di affrontare una nuova sfida: occuparsi degli emigranti ammalati.

eanwhile in New York the Scalabrinian fathers were in serious difficulty in managing a hospital that sprang up to assist sick immigrants. The Bishop of Piacenza, Mons.

Scalabrini, wanted the hospital to be entrusted to Mother Cabrini and her sisters. For the Mother, it was yet another moment of great perplexity, both because she had never thought of managing a hospital, and because they asked her to disentangle a complicated situation that was in a financial mess. One night, however, she dreamed of the Blessed Virgin who was dressed like a nurse and was nursing a sick person. Mother Cabrini wanted to help her but the Madonna gave her to understand that she was doing what she did not want. That was enough for her to decide to take up the new challenge – looking after sick immigrants.

adre Cabrini aveva preso come motto per la sua vita, una frase della Lettera di San Paolo ai Filippesi: «Tutto posso in Colui che mi dà forza». E la forza che lei aveva per affrontare le situazioni più difficili, le veniva dallo Spirito Santo. Quando le fu proposta una missione in Argentina, nella città di Buenos Aires, accettò di buon grado e si mise in viaggio insieme ad un’altra Suora. Partirono da New Orleans e raggiunsero Panama, da qui, l’11 Ottobre del 1895, si imbarcarono per arrivare in Cile. Per andare in Argentina dovettero attendere 25 giorni per passare la Cordigliera delle Ande con la prima carovana disponibile. La traversata, fatta a dorso di una mula, che viene descritta magnificamente dalla stessa Madre Cabrini, fu un’avventura, magnifica e drammatica al punto che la stessa Cabrini stava per precipitare in un crepaccio con tutta la mula.

Arrivarono a Buenos Aires il 1° Dicembre.

other Cabrini had taken as her life motto a sentence from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength”. And the strength that she had in tackling the most difficult situations came to her from the Holy Spirit. When she was asked to undertake a mission in the city of Buenos Aires in Argentina, she accepted readily and set forth on the trip together with another sister. They left New Orleans and reached Panama whence on October 1895 they embarked on a ship bound for Chile. To reach Argentina they had to wait 25 days to cross the Cordillera of the Andes with the first available caravan. The crossing on mule back, as described by Mother Cabrini herself, was an adventure, magnificent and dramatic to the point where Mother Cabrini almost fell into a crevice, mule and all. They arrived in Buenos Aires on December 1.

ochi giorni prima di quel Natale del 1895, Madre Cabrini aveva già trovato una casa dopo averne visitate circa sessanta, e vi andò subito ad abitare sebbene la casa mancasse di tutto, ma la Madre desiderava che Gesù Bambino potesse nascere e benedire quella nuova fondazione. Fondata la Casa, aperta una scuola e intraviste le possibilità di altre fondazioni, riprese a viaggiare e tornare in Europa dove l’aspettavano altre due Fondazioni per orfani ed emigranti italiani: in Francia e in Spagna. Le preoccupazioni però non mancavano mai: molte pene e situazioni incresciose le venivano da ogni parte, ma la preghiera, la fiducia incrollabile nel Sacro Cuore di Gesù le davano la forza e il coraggio di lottare. E fu per lei il giorno più bello dal tempo della Fondazione, quando in Vaticano, le fu consegnato il Decreto definitivo di approvazione delle Regole dell’Istituto.

Era il 12 Luglio del 1907.

A

few days before the Christmas of 1895, Mother Cabrini found a home after having viewed around sixty and she moved in immediately even though there was almost nothing in the home because she wanted Baby Jesus to be born and bless this new foundation.

Once the home was founded and a school opened, there arose the possibility of opening two other foundations; she began travelling again and returned to Europe where two other foundations for orphans and Italian immigrants awaited her in France and Spain. There were always worries, however, and great distress and unpleasant situations assailed her on every side but prayer and her unshakable faith in the Sacred Heart of Jesus gave her the strength and courage to persevere in her struggles. For her, then, July 12, 1907 was the greatest day for the foundation when she received the definitive decree approving the Rule of the institute.

on l’inizio della prima guerra mondiale il ritorno in Europa di Madre Cabrini si faceva sempre più difficile, ma non per questo, rallentava il suo ritmo di attività.

Continuava a visitare le fondazioni già realizzate che richiedevano riforme, cambiamenti e ingrandimenti perché i bisogni erano sempre tanti. Occorreva dare stabilità a quelle opere sorte in modo precario o nei momenti di emergenza. Importante fu la fondazione di Rio De Janeiro sorta fra innumerevoli difficoltà, ma strappata quasi per miracolo all’influenza della massoneria.

Anche da lontano: con lettere, telegrammi, e tramite il rapporto con le Suore responsabili, Madre Cabrini continuava a fondare nuove opere. L’ultima che le costò molto sacrificio fu l’Ospedale di Seattle per il quale la Madre dovette vincere le opposizioni e ambiguità dei poteri locali che vedevano male opere per gli italiani.

W

hen World War I began, returning to Europe became increasingly difficult for Mother Cabrini but this did not slow her down at all. She continued to visit the foundations already established that needed reform, changes and expansion to meet the needs that were always legion. It was necessary to stabilize those works whose beginnings had been precarious or had been launched in times of emergencies. The important foundation in Rio de Janeiro was beset by innumerable difficulties and was wrested away almost miraculously from the influence of Masonry.

Mother Cabrini continued to establish new institutions even from afar through letters, telegrams and her relations with the sisters in charge. The last one which caused her great sacrifice was the hospital in Seattle where Mother Cabrini had to overcome the opposition and ambiguity of the local authorities who frowned upon institutions for Italians.

erso la fine dell’anno 1917 Madre Cabrini, preoccupata per le sue Suore e le sue missioni nei Paesi in guerra e stremata dalle fatiche e dalle contrarietà, appariva molto sofferente. Aveva sostenuto con coraggio e audacia missionaria lotte, viaggi faticosi, sofferenze fisiche e morali per la gloria di Dio e il bene della gente. La sua fragile salute però si andava logorando sempre di più e se da ogni malattia era poi solita riprendersi con la sua grinta apostolica, nessuno si aspettava che quella mattina del 22 Dicembre, accasciata nella sua poltroncina, concludesse improvvisamente la sua vita. Lasciava la sua lampada accesa alle Missionarie del Sacro Cuore di Gesù e a chi avesse voluto condividere il suo progetto, per continuare il cammino da lei intrapreso.

A

round the end of 1917 Mother Cabrini who worried about her sisters and their missions in countries at war, and worn out by struggles and adversity, was looking very distressed.

She had courageously and audaciously endured missionary struggles, exhausting journeys and physical and moral suffering for the glory of God and for the good of humankind. Her fragile health, however, increasingly weakened and since she usually recovered from each illness with her apostolic fighting spirit, no one thought on that morning of December 22 that she would suddenly collapse and die in her armchair. She left her lamp lighted for the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and for whomever might wish to share her projects and continue on the pathway that she had undertaken.

adre Cabrini fu presto riconosciuta dalla Chiesa degna di essere onorata dal popolo per le sue eroiche virtù e proclamata Beata, il 13 Novembre 1938, poi Santa il 7 Luglio 1946. L’8 Settembre 1950, il Papa, Pio XII la dichiarava “Celeste Patrona di tutti gli Emigranti. Oggi ancora, Madre Cabrini è vicina a noi, intercede presso il Cuore di Dio per noi tutti – emigranti del mondo – e sostiene specialmente quanti lasciano la loro patria affrontando pericoli, disagi, sofferenze e incertezza in cerca di una vita degna per sé e per i loro figli. Protegge e benedice quanti cercano di mettere in pratica quello che Gesù ha detto e ha fatto: «perché tutti abbiano vita in abbondanza». Una vita capace di ricreare una civiltà basata sulla giustizia, sull’amore solidale e su una fraternità universale.

other Cabrini was soon recognized by the Church as worthy of being honored by the people for her heroic virtues and was beatified on November 13, 1938 and canonized on July 7, 1946. Pope Pius XII declared her the patron saint of immigrants. Mother Cabrini is still close to us today and intercedes with the Heart of God for all of us – immigrants of the world – and is a support for all those who leave their homeland, facing perils, hardship, suffering and uncertainties in search of a worthy life for themselves and their children. She protects and blesses those who try to put into practice what Jesus said and did “so that they may have life in abundance”. Life that can recreate a civilization based on justice, loving solidarity and on universal fraternity.

Il centenario della morte di Santa Francesca Saverio Cabrini è uno degli eventi principali che segnano quest’anno il cammino della Chiesa, sia per la grandezza della figura che si commemora, sia per l’attualità del suo carisma e del suo messaggio, non solo per la comunità ecclesiale ma per l’intera società.

Pertanto desidero, con questo mio messaggio, che accompagno con la preghiera, spiritualmente partecipare all’Assemblea Generale che come Istituto delle Missionarie del Sacro Cuore di Gesù, insieme con collaboratori laici, terrete dal 17 al 23 settembre prossimo a Chicago, presso il Santuario Nazionale intitolato alla vostra amata Fondatrice e Patrona degli emigranti.

Santa Francesca Saverio Cabrini ha accolto da Dio una vocazione missionaria che in quel tempo poteva essere considerata singolare: formare e inviare per tutto il mondo donne consacrate, con un orizzonte missionario senza limiti, non semplicemente come ausiliarie di istituti religiosi o missionari maschili, ma con un proprio carisma di consacrazione femminile, pur in piena e totale disponibilità alla collaborazione sia con le Chiese locali che con le diverse congregazioni che si dedicavano all’annuncio del Vangelo ad gentes.

Tale consacrazione limpidamente missionaria e femminile nasce in Madre Cabrini dall’unione totale e amorosa con il Cuore di Cristo, la cui misericordia supera ogni confine. Ella vive e trasfonde alle sue suore uno slancio di riparazione per il male nel mondo e per la lontananza da Cristo, che sostiene la missionaria in imprese superiori alle forze umane: l’espressione paolina «Omnia possum in eo qui me confortat» (Fil 4, 13) era il suo motto.

Motto confermato dal sorprendente numero e dall’importanza delle opere avviate durante la sua vita, in Italia, Francia, Spagna, Gran Bretagna, Stati Uniti, America Centrale, Argentina e Brasile. Ma l’amore per il Cuore di Cristo, che si traduce nell’ansia evangelizzatrice, risplende nell’attenzione di Francesca Saverio Cabrini per quelle che oggi chiameremmo le periferie della storia: ad esempio, un anno dopo un crudele linciaggio di italiani, accusati di aver ucciso il capo della polizia di New Orleans, in Louisiana, Madre Cabrini aprì una casa nel quartiere italiano più malfamato.

The centennial of the death of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini is one of the main events marking the journey of the Church both because of the greatness of the figure commemorated and because of the contemporary nature of her charism and message, not just for the ecclesial community but for society as a whole. Through this message of mine and my prayers, it is my wish therefore to participate in spirit in the General Assembly which as the Institute of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its lay collaborators you will hold from September 17 to 23 this year in Chicago near the National Shrine named after your beloved Foundress and Patron Saint of Immigrants.

Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini accepted a missionary vocation from God, which in those days could have been considered unusual – to train and send consecrated women all over the world setting no limits to missionary horizons, not just as auxiliaries of religious institutes or male missionaries but with their own charism as consecrated women religious. At the same time, these women were willing to collaborate fully and totally with both local churches and with various congregations dedicated to proclaim the gospel ad gentes. This clearly feminine, missionary consecration born in Mother Cabrini came from the total and loving union with the Heart of Christ whose compassion surpasses all limits. She lived and instilled in her sisters the impelling desire of reparation for the ills of the world and to overcome separation from Christ, an impetus that sustained the missionary in tasks beyond human strength. She took St. Paul’s claim, “I can do all things in Him Who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13) as her motto. This motto was borne out by the surprising number and by the importance of the works that she undertook during her lifetime in Italy, France, Spain, Great Britain, the United States, Central America, Argentina and Brazil. But her love for the Heart of Christ translated into the evangelical fervor that shines out in the care Frances Xavier Cabrini gave to those who today are considered emarginated in society.

One such example was when Mother Cabrini opened a house in the most infamous Italian quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, just one year after the cruel lynching of Italians accused of having murdered the city’s Chief of Police.

Il carisma di santa Francesca Saverio Cabrini anima una dedizione totale e intelligente verso gli emigranti, che dall’Italia si recavano nel Nuovo Mondo. Gli odierni spostamenti epocali di popolazioni, con le tensioni che inevitabilmente si generano, fanno di Madre Cabrini una figura singolarmente attuale. In particolare, la Santa unisce l’attenzione alle situazioni di maggiore povertà e fragilità, come gli orfani e i minatori, a una lucida sensibilità culturale, che, in continuo dialogo con le gerarchie locali, si impegna a conservare e ravvivare nei migranti la tradizione cristiana recepita nei paesi d’origine, una religiosità talvolta superficiale ma spesso impregnata di un’autentica mistica popolare, offrendo d’altra parte le strade per integrarsi pienamente nella cultura dei paesi di arrivo, così che i migranti italiani fossero accompagnati dalle Madri Missionarie ad essere pienamente italiani e pienamente americani.

La vitalità umana e cristiana dei migranti diventa così un dono per le Chiese e i popoli che accolgono. The charism of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini enlivened a total and intelligent dedication to the immigrants who left Italy for the New World. This choice was the fruit of her sincere and loving obedience to the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIII, and it extended to other fields of missionary work as well. Today’s epoch-making population movements with the inevitable tensions they create make Mother Cabrini a very contemporary figure. In particular, the Saint focused attention on situations of greatest poverty and fragility such as the needs of orphans and miners. She combined that with a lucid cultural sensitivity by continuous dialog with local authorities. She undertook to conserve and revive in the immigrants the Christian tradition they knew in their country of origin, a religiosity which was sometimes superficial and often imbued with authentic popular mysticism. At the same time, she offered ways to fully integrate with the culture of the new countries so that the Missionary Mothers accompanied the Italian immigrants in becoming fully Italian and fully American. The human and Christian vitality of the immigrants thus became a gift to the churches and to the peoples who welcomed them. The great migrations underway today need guidance filled with love and intelligence similar to what characterizes the Cabrinian charism. In this way the meeting of peoples will enrich all and generate union and dialog, not separation and hostility. Nor must we forget that the missionary sensitivity of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini was not sectorial but universal; that is the vocation of every Christian and of every community of the disciples of Jesus.

La Missione Cabriniana oggi

Madre Cabrini lasciava questa terra a Chicago, 100 anni fa, il 22 Dicembre 1917.

Lasciava 67 opere missionarie negli Stati Uniti, in Argentina, Brasile, Europa. Le sue fondazioni riguardavano soprattutto l’attività educativa, ospedaliera, la pastorale per emigranti, la pastorale parrocchiale e molte altre forme di apostolato inerenti alle necessità locali. Le Suore Missionarie di Madre Cabrini si impegnavano a visitare i carcerati, gli ospizi, i quartieri più poveri, le zone rurali dove cercavano sempre di svolgere un tipo di evangelizzazione mirata al fabbisogno del posto.

Dopo la sua morte l’Istituto delle Missionarie del Sacro Cuore di Gesù ha continuato per molti anni lo stesso stile di apostolato soprattutto nelle Scuole, orfanotrofi, educandati, ospedali e parrocchie aumentando il numero delle Opere e aprendosi ad altre Nazioni. Importante fu nel 1926 la Missione in Cina durata 25 anni fino all’espulsione da parte del Governo, la missione in Australia nel 1948 con la fondazione di un Ospedale che continua ancora oggi una proficua missione, lo sviluppo e ampliamento delle attività ospedaliere in Canada, negli Stati Uniti, in Australia e in Italia e quello delle opere educative tra le quali Il Cabrini College in Pennsylvania (USA), oggi Università.

Con il Concilio Vaticano II l’Istituto di Madre Cabrini è entrato in una nuova fase missionaria spinto anche dalla difficoltà di gestire opere troppo complesse dal punto di vista economico e amministrativo e anche in conseguenza della diminuzione delle Vocazioni. Un nuovo fiorire missionario soprattutto verso i più poveri con missioni più piccole e inserite nei contesti popolari si è sviluppato specialmente in America Latina: Brasile, Argentina e Centro America con nuove Missioni in Guatemala, Paraguay, e ultimamente in Messico nella zona più drammatica dell’emigrazione verso gli Stati Uniti.

Anche in Africa: Swaziland e Mozambico (quest’ultima non più attiva) e più tardi in Etiopia, un grande lavoro missionario in favore della vita ha fatto sorgere scuole, dispensari medici e diversi progetti per la promozione della donna. Un’attività ancora consistente è oggi l’attività educativa, che abbraccia la pastorale della famiglia, del quartiere, la formazione e l’integrazione di bambini e studenti stranieri specialmente in Europa (Italia, Spagna e Inghilterra) e negli Stati Uniti. Da oltre 15 anni una Missione è attiva anche in Russia.

La missione cabriniana comunque è in continua evoluzione, insieme a laici collaboratori e corresponsabili, cerca di cogliere i segni dei tempi e si orienta ad una missione più condivisa con altre entità culturali, sociali e religiose al fine di dare il suo contributo cristiano secondo l’ideale di Madre Cabrini che diceva alle sue Missionarie: «A tutto il mondo si deve estendere la vostra carità».

The Cabrinian Mission today

Mother Cabrini departed this earth in Chicago 100 years ago on December 22, 1917.

She left behind her 67 missionary works in the United States, Argentina, Brazil and Europe.

Her foundations mostly involved work in the fields of education, hospitals, pastoral work for immigrants and parochial pastoral work and many other apostolate forms relating to local needs.

Mother Cabrini’s missionary sisters engaged in visiting those in prison, institutions, the slums and rural areas where they always tried to carry out the work of evangelization focused on the needs of the place.

After her death, the Institute of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus continued for many years in the same apostolate style, especially in the schools, orphanages, convent schools, hospitals and parishes and increased the number of works, opening to other nations. In 1926, an important mission was established in China and lasted for 25 years until it was expelled by the government. Then followed the mission in Australia in 1948 with the foundation of a hospital which still today carries out its fruitful mission, the development and expansion of hospital activities in Canada, the United States, Australia and Italy and those educational works including Cabrini College in Pennsylvania (USA) which is now a university.

With the Vatican II Council, Mother Cabrini’s institute entered a new missionary phase, driven also by the difficulty of operating works that were too complex from the financial and administrative viewpoint as well as by the drop in vocations. A new missionary spirit flourished above all for the very poor with smaller missions located in popular areas in Latin America — Brazil, Argentina and Central America with new missions in Guatemala, Paraguay, and ultimately in Mexico where the most dramatic emigration to the United States was taking place.

A great missionary thrust in favor of life brought about the opening of schools, medical dispensaries and various projects for the advancement of women in Africa — Swaziland, and Mozambique (the latter is no longer active) and later in Ethiopia. One still substantial activity is educational work that embraces pastoral work for the family, the district, training and integration of children and foreign students, particularly in Europe (Italy, Spain and England) and in the United States. For more than 15 years, a mission has been active in Russia as well.

The Cabrinian mission is in continual evolution, however, and together with lay collaborators and co-managers, it seeks to keep abreast of the times tending more to sharing its mission with other cultural, social and religious bodies so that it can make its own Christian contribution in accordance with the ideal of Mother Cabrini who said to her missionaries “You must offer your charity to the whole world”.
