EDITORIAL

Welcome to Praia da Luz As I look out of my window to sea, I remind myself how much I love Portugal and how lucky I am to be here of all places during this lockdown.

Praia da Luz is indeed a charming village on the South coast of Portugal. It is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year. It is popular all year round not only as a holiday destination but as a place to live. As a result there is a very strong expat community with residents who have settled here from around the world.

The Fortaleza restaurant is located at the heart of the village on the sea front inside a listed historic fortification.

This fort (or Fortaleza in Portuguese) was built in 1670 to protect the church opposite and the villagers from countless invasions. Today, however, Fortaleza's aim is to 'be invaded' by diners in search of the gastronomic discoveries Portugal has to offer. It is indeed fitting that this historical landmark, be the bastion for visitors to the region to sample Portuguese cuisine.

Perched on top of a cliff with magnificent views out to sea not only will visitors enjoy a hearty meal but will enjoy one of the most stunning locations of any restaurant in the Algarve.

Bem-vindo a Praia da Luz Quando olho pela janela de frente para o mar, lembro-me do quanto amo Portugal e da sorte que tenho de estar aqui durante este confinamento.

A Praia da Luz é de fato uma vila encantadora na costa sul de Portugal, abençoado com mais de 300 dias de sol por ano. Em tempos normais, é muito popular durante todo o ano, não apenas como destino de férias, mas como um lugar para se viver e há uma comunidade de expatriados muito forte que se instalaram aqui de toda parte do mundo.

O movimentado restaurante Fortaleza está localizado no coração da vila, em frente ao mar, e fica em uma impressionante fortificação histórica.

Este forte (Fortaleza em português) foi construído em 1670 para proteger a igreja da vila em posição oposta e seu povo de inúmeras invasões. Hoje, no entanto, a ambição da Fortaleza é “ser invadida” por clientes e amigos em busca das descobertas gastronômicas que Portugal tem a oferecer. É realmente adequado que este marco histórico seja o bastião dos visitantes da região para provar a cozinha portuguesa.

'Empoleirado' no topo de um penhasco com vistas magníficas para o mar, os visitantes não apenas desfrutarão de uma refeição saudável, mas também desfrutarão de uma das localizações mais impressionantes do que qualquer outro restaurante do Algarve.

UM POUCO DE HISTÓRIA |A BRIEF HISTORY

Built in 1670 Fortaleza is an old fortress that would originally have had a battery of 5 canons pointing out to sea. It was built to protect the church and the villagers from marauding pirates and Moors. These relentlessly attacked coastal villages of the Algarve looting and often capturing the local folk and turning them into slaves.

After having had extensive military use the fortress fell into disuse and it was auctioned off by the Government in 1894. It was purchased by Sr. Marreiros Neto, a dignitary from Lagos who would travel up from Lagos to Luz for relaxing weekends by the sea - just as the Romans did centuries before.

In 1986, a passion for old buildings together with a love affair for food inspired the present owners to restore the building to its former glory and create Luz’s Premier restaurant, the now renowned Fortaleza restaurant.

Construída em 1670, a Fortaleza é um antigo forte que originalmente teria uma bateria de 5 canhões apontando para o mar. Foi construído para proteger a igreja e os aldeões de piratas e mouros. Estes atacavam implacavelmente as aldeias costeiras do Algarve, saqueando e frequentemente capturando o povo local e transformando-os em escravos.

Depois de amplo uso militar, a fortaleza ficou abandonada e foi leiloada pelo governo em 1894. Foi comprada pelo Sr. Marreiros Neto, um dignitário de Lagos que viajava de Lagos para Luz para relaxar nos fins de semana à beira-mar - assim como os romanos fizeram séculos antes.

Em 1986, a paixão por edifícios antigos, juntamente com um caso de amor pela comida, inspirou os proprietáios a restaurar o edifício à sua antiga glória e criar o restaurante Premier da Luz, o agora renomado restaurante Fortaleza.restaurant.

SALÃO BARONIAL | BARONIAL HALL The candle- lit baronial hall with its vaulted arches and stark atmospheric stone walls is the perfect setting for that special night out.

The interior has not changed much from the time it was built in 1670.

Initially it would have housed military troops defending the church and the village.

Later, it was used by the local fishermen to store their nets.

It’s also rumoured they also set up a tavern here and it became infamous for gambling.

After the revolution in 1974 it metamorphosed into the main dining hall of the Fortaleza restaurant we know today.

O salão baronial à luz de velas, com arcos abobadados e fortes paredes de pedra atmosférica, é o cenário perfeito para aquela noite especial.

O interior não mudou muito desde que foi construído em 1670.

Inicialmente, teria abrigado tropas militares que defendiam a igreja e a vila.

Mais tarde, foi usado pelos pescadores locais para abrigar as suas redes.

Também há rumores de que eles também montaram uma taberna aqui onde se tornou famosa por abrigar jogos.

Após a revolução de 1974, ela se metamorfoseou na sala principal do restaurante Fortaleza que conhecemos hoje.

As a result the extensive menu highlights the diverse and exciting avours based on the modern interpretation of traditional Portuguese, Moorish and above all Algarvian dishes. It features fusion and contemporary execution of these regional classics sourcing its ingredients from the owner's own organic farm as well as local suppliers and of course the freshest of fish from the local market.

Como resultado, o extenso menu destaca os sabores diversos e emocionantes, com base na interpretação moderna dos pratos tradicionais portugueses, mouros e, acima de tudo, algarvios. A fusão de sabores e execução contemporânea desses clássicos regionais, com ingredientes adquiridos da própria fazenda orgânica do proprietário, além de fornecedores locais e, é claro, dos peixes mais frescos do mercado local.

Cataplana: the Algarve in a dish One of the all time favourites on the menu is the monk fish and shrimp cataplana. This regional dish is the iconic fish stew so typical to the Algarve region and is surely one of Portugal's tastiest dishes. What makes this dish so special is that it is cooked in a clamshaped copper dish which concentrates the avours during cooking. One side is placed onto the heat and filled with the perfect balance of ingredients and then the lid is closed and left to cook. It is often compared to a 'tagine', and there’s a theory that the cataplana may have been invented while the Algarve was under Moorish rule.

Cataplana: o Algarve em um prato Um dos favoritos desde sempre no menu é a cataplana de peixe e camarão. Este prato regional é um ensopado de peixe icônico tão típico da região do Algarve e é certamente um dos pratos mais saborosos de Portugal.

O que torna este prato tão especial é que é cozido em um tipo de tacho de cobre em forma de 'amêijoa' que concentra os sabores durante o cozimento. Um lado é colocado no fogo e preenchido com o equilíbrio perfeito de ingredientes; em seguida, a tampa é fechada e deixada para cozinhar. É frequentemente comparado a um 'tagine', e existe uma teoria de que a cataplana pode ter sido inventada enquanto o Algarve estava sob o domínio mourisco.

Filet Mignon ‘La Moutarde’

This is a new dish for 2020 and it brings exciting new avours to our menu without losing the sight of essential Algarve avours.

It's sure to be one of our top menu items.

Chef Edi says "I'm very proud to be able to bring you this new recipe. It is prepared with prime medallion of filet mignon which is braised in wild herb butter and crusted with paprika and bell peppers. The menu is perfected with a mustard and cream cheese sauce. It is accompanied by leek and mushroom risotto.

With such an amazing location it isn't surprising that there's always so much going on at Fortaleza.

Every Sunday in season there's the famous Jazz Lunch. This unique event takes place on the outside terrace with a jovial 7 piece band playing on the manicured lawns. This cheeky orchestra has been delighting visitors for the last 25 years and is usually sold out up to a week in advance. This is surely the most entertaining way to while away a Sunday afternoon in the Algarve.

We also hold innumerable events such as craft fairs, art galleries, birthday parties, anniversaries, and it's always a hot spot for Christmas lunch and the riotous New Year's Eve party is a legend.

The Fortress is also ideal for wedding celebrations and is conveniently situated opposite the charming and highly decorated typically Portuguese church of Praia da Luz. ICE CREAM FACTORY | GELATARIA ‘’I scream, you scream - we all scream for the The Fabulous Ice Cream Factory’’ The Fortaleza's very own Ice Cream Factory offers the only home made ice cream in the village. It's hard to believe that it has been bringing happiness to visitors to Praia da Luz for 10 years already. You can't miss the iconic building on your way to the beach and there's usually a bit of a queue outside.

Carla, who runs the shop, says: 'The ice cream itself is actually made òn the premises. The passion for this art came from studying Italian ice cream and perfecting the recipes throughout the quieter winter months. Such is the constant demand from tourists and resident alike the shop now stays open practically all year round'.

She goes on to say 'Money can't buy you happiness but it can sure buy you a lot of ice cream!’

A própria fábrica de sorvetes de Fortaleza é o único empório de sorvetes caseiros da vila. É difícil acreditar que isso já traga felicidade aos visitantes da Praia da Luz há 10 anos. Você não pode perder o edifício icônico a caminho da praia e geralmente há uma fila do lado de fora.

O sorvete em si é realmente feito pelos proprietários de Fortaleza, cuja paixão veio do estudo do sorvete italiano e do aperfeiçoamento das receitas durante os meses de inverno.

Agora não há tempo de inatividade, pois a tomada permanece aberta praticamente o ano todo. Tal é a demanda constante de turistas e residentes.

Carla diz: "O dinheiro não pode

comprar felicidade para você, mas com certeza pode comprar um monte de sorvete!"

Ela continua explicando: 'O segredo é que o sorvete é misturado diariamente à mão na pequena cozinha nos fundos da loja e usamos apenas frutas frescas e ingredientes italianos premium. Você pode realmente sentir a diferença entre o sorvete industrial e as coisas caseiras que fabricamos aqui ' "Frequentemente, os visitantes parecem incapazes de decidir qual sabor escolher e acabam chegando todos os dias das férias até que experimentem todos". Ela me diz que as pessoas geralmente se tornam regulares após a primeira visita e adquirem o hábito de vir todos os dias das férias como um tratamento especial.

She goes on the explain 'The secret is that the ice cream is hand churned daily from the small kitchen in the back of the shop and that we use only fresh fruit and premium Italian ingredients. You can really taste the difference between industrial ice cream and the home made stuff we make here’ 'Often visitors don't seem to be able to make up their minds which avour to choose and they end up coming every day of their holiday until they have tried them all'.

She tells me people usually become regulars after their first visit and fall into a habit of coming every day of their holiday as a special treat.
