In this Art Workshop, internationally renowned artist, Sterling Edwards, will show you how to create a watercolor painting that stands out from the crowd. Intended for the intermediate to advanced student, the class will cover a wide variety of watercolor techniques and subjects. Learn how to create energy in your painting with a balance of positive and negative shapes, how to build rich values, save white paper, and how to use expressive color and stylized shapes, just to name a few. You’ll also learn many ways to create drama in your paintings with expressive brushwork and balancing hard and soft edges. If you’re ready to take your painting to new levels and push the boundaries of your creative side, then this is one workshop that you won’t want to miss. See for yourself why Sterling Edwards is one of the most sought after workshop instructors in the U.S. Sterling Edwards is an award winning contemporary watermedia master. He has been teaching national and international painting workshops for the past 15 years and holds signature status in the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and in the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. He was featured in the fall 2001 issue of “Watercolor Magic Magazine’s Ones to Watch” and in “Best of America Watermedia Artists”, as well as numerous other publications. Sterling is the author of the bestselling book Creating Luminous Watercolor Landscapes, a Four Step Process and is a contributing artist in six other books. In 2013, Sterling was accepted by invitation into the International Watercolor Society. In addition, he is often commissioned to jury national and international art competitions, and his paintings are collected worldwide.

Learning to simplify and avoid overworking are the goals of this class. Charles uses the same approach for figures, still life, and landscapes. First you’ll use contour drawing to help you concentrate on interconnecting shapes rather than on individual isolated objects. Next you’ll practice “Direct Painting”, using as few over washes as possible. Concentrate on good paint consistency (the correct ratio of water and paint when the brush is loaded.) Your goal will be to achieve the correct color, edge variety, and tonal value with your first try. It’s strongly advised that before the workshop, each student review: “Painting Flowers in Watercolor“, “Charles Reid’s Watercolor Secrets”, and the recent ”Charles Reid’s Watercolor Solutions”. Charles Reid has long been considered a master of watercolor. He was born in Cambridge, New York, and studied art at the University of Vermont and the Art Students League of New York. He has won numerous awards, including the Childe Hassam Purchase Prize at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor Society. In 1980 he was elected to the National Academy of Design. Public collections of his work include Smith College, Yellowstone Art Center, Brigham Young College, Roche Corporation, and the National Academy of Design. In addition to painting, Reid teaches workshops around the world. He has written eleven books on painting in watercolor and oil.

Landscape Watercolor Secrets

05/15/2017 - 05/19/2017 WKSHP-00678 • $525 Watercolor Level 2 SOLD OUT

http://www.terryharrison.com

This painting workshop is all about taking the mystery out of watercolour painting and having some fun along the way. Terry comes all the way from England to teach at Cheap Joe’s and to share with you some of his secrets and techniques on painting watercolour the easy way! The subjects Terry will cover in this workshop will include - How to paint trees, buildings, and snow, as well as how to achieve the most from your brushes and paints. Terry’s wonderful sense of humor makes learning fun and his step by step method of teaching takes all the frustration out of painting. This workshop fills very quickly, so register early. Terry is one of the United Kingdom’s best known artists, specializing in landscapes using both watercolour and acrylics. After art school training and a career as an illustrator, Terry began his full time painting career in 1986 as a successful gallery artist. After countless solo shows and exhibitions, he is now passing on his knowledge and skills, resulting in over 15 very successful technique books translated into many languages. His first book sold over 140,000 copies world-wide. He has also appeared on TV, has produced several instructional DVDs, and has developed his very own unique line of brushes and paints.

Through the language of watercolor, explore the world around you in fresh, exciting and personal ways. The lessons in Don’s workshop are geared to a better understanding of that personal exploration. Each day, Don will stress a major visual concern; light, color, granulation, organizing nature and utilizing negative space are just a few subjects to be addressed. The class isn’t geared to any specific level of achievement; rather artists at all levels will benefit from a more intimate understanding of the painting possibilities available in the exciting world of landscape painting. This workshop will be packed with demonstrations, discussions, individual help, personal and group critiques. Don once received second honorable mention in the Black Water county art fair and 4-H club extravaganza. He has taught workshops in all fifty-three states as well as North Korea and Realmessistan. Don and Skeeter Davis once started a beautiful landscape painting on the side of the Beauregard County water tower, though it was never finished due to a lack of art appreciation from the local county sheriff. When asked to describe Don’s teaching ability at a Cheap Joe’s workshop, student Louis Rizzo used several descriptive *!* words. Don’s book based on his workshop travels, “Rough Sketches”, has to date sold literally tens of copies. But seriously, if you like to have fun while you’re learning a ton, Don’s workshop is just for you. Don Andrews is a nationally known watercolor artist and workshop instructor. He is a graduate of Ringling School of Art in Florida and a resident of Austin, TX. Don is an active member and past board director of the American Watercolor Society. His paintings have received numerous awards in national watercolor competitions, including three awards from the American Watercolor Society.

Join our very own “Cheap Joe” Miller in this not to be missed artist workshop that covers “everything” about watercolor painting that you need to know. Joe will briefly review the basics like composition, value, materials, etc. There will be a demo each day using different techniques like wet into wet, dry brush, texture, etc. He will cover the little things that make big differences. You will take home not only finished paintings, but a head full of info that will serve you down the road on your journey of art. The only prerequisites are that you have painted at least 6 paintings in the last 6 months (preferably more) and that you have a desire to learn. We look forward to seeing you there! Joe Miller, founder and owner of Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff began his professional career as a pharmacist and drugstore owner. In the mid-1980s, he decided to follow his long-standing fascination with watercolor painting and later began selling art supplies in the drugstore. Now, Cheap Joe’s is a world renowned mail order and internet art supply business, with three retail stores in North Carolina. Joe is also an award winning artist and nationally known art instructor. In 2006, he received the prestigious Dolphin Medal of the American Watercolor Society designated for persons making outstanding contributions to watercolor and art in general. He is a lifetime member of the Florida Watercolor Society, the Watercolor Society of NC, and the High Country Watermedia Society. He is also proud to hold the title of HSG (high school graduate). Joe has had many solo shows and he is the author of three books, and is working on a fourth. He has produced several instructional DVDs and YouTube tutorials, as well as being featured in numerous magazines and newspapers.

09/05/2017 - 09/08/2017 • 4 Day WKSHP-00708 • $ 425 Watercolor Level 3 and up http://www.johnwilkisonart.com

Think backward into a work of art! This watercolor workshop involves the “Atelier” approach which goes back to a concentrated method derived from teaching practices begun in the late middle ages and the renaissance. You’ll learn how to really look at an object, its situation, and how to abstract and simplify the visible world. The dramatic use of light and color, line, texture, and chiaroscuro are focused upon as tools. Secrets of classical design will be revealed to result in a strong painting. Toward the end of the class, these principles will be putt to the test in the form of the student’s own work. John shares his unique approach to painting, and he introduces the work of artists from the past, with the objective of showing their color and design principles. Moreover, each student receives personal, focused instruction. Students not only learn to paint, but also, are introduced to Art History. John Wilkison graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Masters Degree in Painting and Studio. He has been working in watercolor since 1970. His paintings have been shown at the Montgomery Museum of Art in Alabama, The Museum of the Southwest in Midland, Texas, and the Tennessee State Museum. LIAN QUAN ZHEN

East Meets The West (Chinese & WC)

10/16/2017 - 10/20/2017 WKSHP-00720 • $595 Watercolor Level 3 and up http://www.lianspainting.com

This workshop is divided into two segments: two days of Chinese painting, and three days of watercolor. In the Chinese painting session, students learn how to use Chinese brushes, ink and colors, as well as theories of the Asian Art, and use the techniques to paint two styles of Chinese paintings: spontaneous style and detail with spontaneous style. During the watercolor painting session, Lian teaches basic techniques such as compositions and coloring, plus his unique methods including, “Color Pouring and Blending” and “Paint Around” (negative painting). There are 4-6 short demos each day with student practices between. There will also be critiques in which Lian helps you touch up your paintings. By the end of the workshop, you may be able to finish couple of paintings, or learn enough techniques to complete them later. Lian is an internationally sought-after watercolor & Chinese painting artist/teacher. He has many shows in the US, Hong Kong and China and has an international following. His paintings hang in numerous institutional and private collections including the MIT Museum, which has collected 14 of his paintings. Lian is the author of five books, which have been distributed internationally. He has taught workshops and juried exhibitions all across the US and in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, China, South Africa and Australia. He has also been featured in numerous professional magazines, books and other publications internationally.

Just as a cheetah is able to focus on one single zebra in a stampeding blur of stripes and dust, artists must learn to focus their artistic vision and decision-making on selected parts of their subject to the exclusion of everything else. Watercolors are mostly about emotion. By working the middle values, you guide the viewer’s eye to where you want it to go, increasing the emotional impact and depth. In this workshop, David Rankin will train you in his Observation & Evaluation Skills for correct color values, in how to build a better illusion of spatial depth by using one of 6 different painting recipes for placing the darkest darks in your paintings, and in how to create masterful middle values for maximum emotional impact. David’s award-winning watercolors are in public and private collections in the US and India, have been featured in more than 125 museum exhibitions, are included in the North Light’s series– Splash: The Best of Watercolor, and Strokes of Genius: The Best of Drawing, and in numerous art magazines. He promotes conservation and appreciation of the natural world through his paintings, and has served on the board of the Society of Animal Artists since 1990, having won their top award 4 times. David is one of the true modern-day masters of transparent watercolor, exuding a dynamic passion for the medium in his lectures, demonstrations, and workshop instruction. His art reflects his profound passion for both watercolor and nature, as he feels a connection with the subjects he paints.

It is amazing how taking a workshop can help take our art to the next level—I have taken many and appreciate all that I have learned from them and the many friends I have made in each class. It is one of the best gifts I have ever given to myself and my art. I could name lots more artists who have taken many workshops. I can name professional artists who regularly attend workshops. If you ask them why you might be surprised at their answers. “It keeps us young” - “It’s entertaining us while we learn” - “I wanted to jump start my art and it did.” I could go on and on. Each listing that follows includes the sponsoring organization in red, the instructors name, date, class level, location, and contact information. Enjoy! Joe
