of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The basic objective of ASEAN is to foster freer trade between member countries and to enhance cooperation in their industrial policies, with the view to achieve economic growth, social progress, and science development. Another objective is promote regional peace and stability.

In 2003,

an ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) between 6 original members came into effect. The AFTA has cut tariffs on manufacturing and agricultural products to less than 5%. However, Malaysia refused to bring down tariffs on imported cars. Malaysia wants to protect its domestically produced car, Proton.

Notwithstanding such issues, ASEAN and AFTA are progressing towards establishing a free trade area. ASEAN is also pushing for free trade agreements with China, Japan and South Korea.
