G athering Places
As the CH+D team put this issue together, it was clear from the homeowners we met, the local companies we interviewed, and the answers we received that the kitchen is vitally centric to the rest of the home. The theme of gathering is clear and pervasive throughout this issue, especially in our own house, as our magazine family recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of our publication. Whether you’re searching our “Tasteful Kitchens of Charleston” feature and bookmarking pages as a source of insight into your next project, ogling the pages of our Project Files section to read the stories of other local homeowners, or even just learning how to set the table in our “Learning the Lingo” article, I hope you find the perfect inspiration as you flip through each page of this issue.

hen I think of winter, I reminisce about some of the best times of the year, of time with family celebrating the holidays, bringing in the new year, and always, always eating more than my fair share of my mother’s homemade sugary treats. Dreaming about those melt-in-your-mouth sugar cookies, or decadent cheesecakes reminds me of time in the kitchen, helping her cook, while eating half of the ingredients before they make it into the oven. At its heart, this issue is all about that place where the family gathers; the kitchen. Regardless of what “They” say, I say food is the way to everyone’s heart. And what better way to spend time with loved ones than in a beautiful kitchen?
Another kitchen that has our whole staff drooling over its stunning colors, clean lines, and “pura vida” vibes is the center of our cover star, Chelsea Meissner’s amazingly bright and relaxed James Island home. When she opened the door to our CH+D crew and showed us around, it was obvious that her kitchen is a place of congregation for her friends and family as well. One Stop Shop Emily Floyd, founder of Castleton Marketplace, chats with Charleston Home + Design magazine about her vision for the store and how she works with local vendors to curate an ideal shopping experience.
What brought Castleton Marketplace to Charleston? As a College of Charleston alumna, I couldn’t think of a more perfect place for Castleton to call home. Innovative and creative small businesses are forming everyday with locals and tourists alike wanting to support them. Now that Castleton is near the one-year mark, it keeps proving to be a great decision.
How did you get started in this industry? I really wanted to create something different. Shopping has always been one of my favorite hobbies so I have tried to shape the store to a shopper’s taste. We don’t have the concept of “booths” that you commonly think of when multiple sellers are under one roof with a vendor mall concept. The small business owners that are located within our building have specific and unique product lines so repetitive merchandise is rare and everything is combined into vignettes in their own space.
What services and products does Castleton Marketplace offer to customers? Castleton Marketplace has two types of customers. Our first 60 • CH+D • Winter 2019
type of customer is our everyday shopper who wants to experience something that they haven’t seen in other shops within the area. From startups to second location seekers, our building layout allows for a complete flex space for their own “boutique.” The businesses we showcase can be small pop-ups for 6 months or longer, allowing for the store merchandise to rotate with seasons or on a need basis and be completely different every time a customer visits. Second, are our small business entrepreneurs, local or out of town, who would like to establish their first brick and mortar retail location within the Charleston area.
What can a customer expect to find when they visit Castleton Marketplace? When you walk into Castleton Marketplace, you will find everything curated for the home! From interior designers establishing a vignette showcasing their favorite brands and style, to a custom furniture craftsman or a fully-stocked soy candle workshop, we have a vast variety of items to peruse. And with new arrivals everyday, there is always a new piece of décor to discover.

He Said: Adam Said: I personally prefer shutters over roman shades due to their curb appeal (both interior and exterior) and their durability. I like the larger louvers because they let more light into a home.
Adam Said: I am an automated shades person. Before putting automated shades in my own home, I was never a tech person but they’ve now become my favorite feature. I can sit and watch football and not have to worry about being bothered by the glare, I just tell Alexa to lower my shades.
Adam Said: I love the automated roller shades. They have a clean line and simple appeal to them. I also prefer to have a valance with it to help bring it all together.
She Said: Roman Shades or Shutters?

Arika Said: I prefer roman shades. I think they add a timeless and elegant look to almost any area where you display them and with all of the different fabric options, we have something for everyone.
Arika Said: Automated window treatments are cool because you can control your shades from an app. I think that the automated window treatments are great particularly for women who are living alone, because there are safety advantages of being able to control them so easily.
Arika Said: The Lutron automated shades are awesome. Between their efficiency, reputation, and overall reliability you cannot beat them. I love the variety of material options and it’s really great that you can’t hear them moving.

Liz Baker of Translations Design & Coralberry Cottage Liz loves all things related to design and the home. By day she uses her talents throughout the Lowcountry for her residential architectural firm, Translations Design as well as the coastal-cottage inspired furniture store, Coralberry Cottage. By night, she creates a beautiful, functional home for her family.
1 Unpredictability is a wonderful
feature in a home, and one which Liz tries to incorporate not just in her own, but in every design she works on. These interior windows provide a sneak peek into another room, creating curiosity, and entice guests to continue exploring. While beautiful, the custom Coralberry Cottage signature pieces also encourage everyone to stop and relax.
2 The dining room (which also serves as
a sunroom) was envisioned by Liz to bring just the right amount of “wowfactor,” as well as coziness, to the space by integrating plenty of lighting and a perfectly-scaled barn door entry for style and privacy.
3 Eclectic design is another essential
aspect of Liz’s architectural and interior designs, which she articulates in this room with new furniture made of reclaimed materials, reclaimed wood floors, and an industrial spin with a glass garage door in the adjacent room.

retreat,” was her goal for her own home and she makes it top priority in every project that she works on to achieve comfort and beauty. She wants to be able to kick her feet up when she gets home and enjoy the aesthetics of her surroundings at the same time. That’s why she chose reclaimed woods blended with soft and cool colors and clean accents, like shiplap walls to create her perfect oasis.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON
Cultivating Custom Fabrics Creating one-of-a-kind pieces for each client is the driving force for the team at Jean’s Custom Workroom. The Craftswoman:
Jean Peters, the brain behind Jean’s Custom Workroom, opened her showroom to fulfill her passion for creating a beautiful product and to help clients bring their custom drapery and upholstery dreams to life.
The Craft:
Jean and her team work with clients to provide high-quality and custom drapery, bedding, pillows, slipcovers, upholstery, and window treatments.
Jean’s Backstory:

When Jean was just 12 years old, she began sewing clothes with her grandmother and her passion grew from there. After starting a family, Jean decided to teach herself a new aspect of craft. Her goal was to reinvent the sewing she had been doing in the past. She learned how to create custom draperies and other types of upholsteries. Once her daughter was old enough to drive, Jean opened her showroom.
The Process:
Jean’s process begins when she gets a call from a homeowner or a designer saying they would like to commission a piece. The first step is to take measurements. After she completes the measurements, Jean confirms the next steps with her client or designer. The fabric is ordered from all over, but it is all designer fabric that can’t be found in stores. Once the order is made it takes about six to eight weeks for Jean to wrap up the project; Jean’s Custom Workroom is part of their client’s process from start to finish.
Their Philosophy:

Custom EcoShell™ Construction When it comes to building a custom house, many homeowners are choosing to build green. One way to do that early in the process is through a type of construction called EcoShell.™ This is a product that creates an air tightness in the structure and helps it maintain healthier indoor air quality. The EcoShell™ panels are often used to build crawl spaces and attics so that mold and mildew growth is blocked from getting into the air, and eventually the homeowner’s

It’s important for homeowners to remember, especially in Charleston’s humid, salty, and hurricane-prone climate, that a home’s garage door can do more than hide the family cars from sight. Installing a hurricane-rated garage door helps protect the envelope of the structure during high-velocity wind storms. Setting The Table
From casual family dinners to dinner parties to special occasions it’s always important to have the perfect place setting. It’s a process that requires attention to detail since you’re following proper table etiquette. Don’t fret; we’re here to break it down.
Placemat:
Napkin & Napkin Ring:
The placemat designates each individual table setting. It’s there to protect the table from water marks, food spills, and even heat damage. It also serves a decorative purpose.
Once seated, a napkin is placed on your lap and isn’t removed until you’re done with your meal. The napkin ring is set to the top left of the setting. After the meal is finished, it’s good manners to pull the napkin through the ring and place it on the table.
Charger:
Silverware:
Chargers, or service plates, are used as a base for the dinner plates and bowls. They are used throughout the courses of the meal and are taken away before desert. Chargers are more commonly used in formal settings.
Like with the dinnerware, always set the table with silverware that is actually going to be used. The silverware is set for use from the outside in; soup, salad, then entrée. Keep in mind, the dinner utensils are bigger than the salad utensils.
Plates & Bowls:
Glasses:
The dinnerware is set in order of how they are eaten, from top to bottom; soup bowl on top, dinner plate on the bottom. However, it’s not necessary to include plates for a course that you won’t be eating.
Depending on the formality of the dinner party, either wine glasses or regular glasses can be used. The water glasses are typically above the knives and then the wine glasses are set right-to-left in the order used.

These travels inspired his love for painting and architecture even more and reinforced his architectural career choice as a perfect way of combining his favorite hobby with his profession.
What are a few of your favorite design elements of this home? Designing the dining room, great room, and home office so that the homeowners and guests can take advantage of the distant view of the ocean is my favorite aspect of the home. The marble master bath has vaulted ceilings and large marble shower that are also spectacular. An open contemporary three story staircase is a main feature that really catches the eye.
What particular challenges did you face while designing this structure? Incorporating the swimming pool into the rear deck, maintaining views, and creating a footprint that worked on a narrow site was the biggest challenge for the design of this home.
Why was it important for the homeowners to work with an architect on this project? This is the second Kiawah home we have designed for the homeowners. Their previous home didn’t have room for a pool, so this time, they took advantage of our architectural pre-contract services of assisting their search for a buildable lot where they could be closer to the ocean and find a lot that allowed for a pool. Having done another home with the client we could easily customize this home to their current needs for their young, growing family. What are some of the unique features of this home? This home is situated on a deep water lot, so the outdoor living aspect is quite spectacular. It includes a vaulted rear porch with a wood burning fireplace and pool overlooking the Wando River. There are wall-to-wall, 10-foot sliding doors across the rear of the home that frame the view and bring the outdoors in, which was important to the homeowners.
Were there any challenges that presented themselves throughout the process? With a deep and narrow lot, we had to work as a team with the architect during the design process to make the best use of the building area available and incorporate our client’s wish list. For example, stairs had to be incorporated into the rear porch elevation, giving the illusion they are hidden, to allow for the pool to fit on the lot.
What advice do you have for homeowners looking to build a custom home? Without question, we believe the most cohesive home design is the result of the homeowner, builder, and architect working together from the beginning. A collaborative team approach will streamline the process and reduce building costs while adding value. Shannon’s love of all things design began at an early age when she was more interested in Barbie’s dream house than her shoes and handbags! She started in the design field on the commercial side, but it became apparent that the finishes and staging of the homes were a top priority for clients. Shannon switched to residential design and finds the ultimate fulfillment by working with clients to create their dream home.
What were some of the design goals of this home? This Kiawah home belongs to a special couple–they are so alive and fun and have such a love for color. When the wife gave us the pink, blue, and orange palette, I was so pleasantly surprised. They wanted a beach house that was comfortable and colorful.
What are a few of your favorite elements of this home? I absolutely love the four swivel chairs in the blue hombre fabric from Rowe. They are comfortable, stylish, and make such a statement in the sitting area off the kitchen. The Thibault wallpaper in the powder room is a show stopper, too.
Why was it important for the homeowners to work with an interior designer to create this design? Their desired palette was strong, vibrant colors. While it’s such a beautiful palette, it can be tricky to work with such independent shades. Our experience with color and efficient design was invaluable on this project.
What challenges did you overcome while working on this design? We had a very quick turn-around time for this project in order to meet a family gathering deadline. Trying to pull that kind of design together in a short time often requires the expertise or a professional to help the homeowners avoid mistakes as well as meet the deadline. uying a family home requires patience and diligence and can be a difficult process to navigate. However, remodeling a family home requires the same patience and diligence coupled with thought, vision and creativity. It can be a much more difficult process, but one that, often times, is simply unavoidable. That is exactly what Daniel Island residents Chad and Angie Johnson decided when they ultimately exhausted their search for “the perfect” new home. In the end they opted to purchase an existing home and partner with the original 102 • CH+D • Winter 2019

Chad and Angie own a real estate business, which has been based on Daniel Island for the last eighteen years, so it might seem like a simple task to most observers. “We looked at a lot of houses, but nothing felt quite right,” explains Angie. “We actually looked at our current house several times before making a decision. It
seemed a little too far from what we were looking for. Chad realized its potential first and he slowly brought me around to the idea of remodeling it.” The home was initially built by Lowcountry Premier Custom Homes, but that’s not where Angie and Chad’s relationship with proprietor Cy Goforth began. “Angie was one of the first real estate agents I met on Daniel Island and actually gave me initial design direction on the first home I designed and built here”, says Cy. “Over the years we have worked together many times and have formed

a great professional relationship as well. Since the Johnsons knew that they were going to remodel their home and having such a great relationship with the original builder to begin with, working with Cy to create the perfect home was the obvious choice. “It’s a very well-built structure,” describes Angie. “But the previous owner didn’t have young children at home so everything in it was very masculine.
We wanted to brighten it up and update the style. We particularly needed an open kitchen that functioned well for our family.” So the team went to the drawing board, accompanied by interior designer Caroline DeVlaming Farrior and Embellish Interiors, kitchen designer Bryan Reiss, CMKBD of Distinctive Design, and Damien Busillo of DLB Architects for the overall restructuring of the project. They brought down the ceiling
in the entryway to add finished space upstairs, redesigned the fenestration in the living and dining room areas to take full advantage of the stunning views, and completely reconfigured the kitchen area to include a scullery. The fireplace in the living room was also redone on a larger scale to make it fit the room. “We were actually in the middle of remodeling the family room when Chad decided that the CH+D • Winter 2019 • 103

fireplace needed to be a more dramatic focal point to balance the room.” That meant that the entire chimney and flue had to be replaced to accommodate the larger capacity. The Johnsons chose a stunning marble for the fireplace surround, and
initially wanted to carry it into the kitchen as well. After much debate, the marble countertops were not chosen, due to the extra upkeep and maintenance. Instead Angie and Chad chose a beautiful Polarstone quartz for unmatched dura-

Overall the process was seamless and painless for the Johnsons because of their excellent relationship with Cy and the other members of the team. “Cy is a practical person,” Angie adds. “He offered usable insight for all of the different areas of the house once we described what we wanted. Unaffected Façade When it comes to standing out from the crowd while also blending in with the scenery, this Kiawah Island home’s exterior has got it made in the shade.
I
magine an island of pure wilderness, untouched by civilization or human structure. Now imagine that the same island is inhabited, but with homes that are almost completely tucked away from the eye behind that wilderness. When venturing deep into Kiawah Island, the setting gives the impression that just beyond the tree line lies some-

thing exciting and beautiful, much like the home that Garden State Lumber provided with custom exterior shingles. Kiawah Island home are also designed with custom, non-repeating methods to look just like a textured, real wood shingle. Russell Fogg of Garden State Lumber says, “NuCedar has done an outstanding job duplicating the look of real wood siding. It’s almost impossible to differentiate, even to the trained eye.” Another feature that sets these shingles apart from real wood or alternative op-
tions is the nature of PVC itself. Even though it’s similar to the PVC that most people associate with plumbing applications, it’s formulated differently to make it more pliable than real wood. Because this plastic product is more pliable than wood, it creates a slightly flexible barrier against high winds and air-born objects, which in turn, makes it great for application on the exterior of homes located in hurricane-prone areas like
the Lowcountry. Russell adds, “I think pliability is a key component to this NuCedar shingle. Stellar Illumination For this Eutawville, SC homeowner, getting advice from the experts who could meet her needs made all the difference in her outdoor lighting experience.
A
fter a rough experience with prior outdoor lighting, this Eutawville homeowner was ready to make her outdoor lighting dreams come true with the help of the experts at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives. Mike Thompson, proprietor of Outdoor Lighting Perspectives, was working on a Christmas project for an-

other client when he was approached by this particular homeowner who was interested in how his company could solve her lighting dilemma. After walking the property, Mike and the homeowner came up with a game plan. “We walked the property together and she had a pretty large scale project,” Mike says. “The property owner had a lot of specific
needs and it was my job as the professional to provide her with the best experience and to exceed her expectations which I feel like we accomplished. She was over the moon about what we could do and the level of service we could provide.” Once the walk-through was complete and Mike provided his feedback, he

returned to do a demo at night for the homeowner so that she could get a visual for what the project would look like upon completion. By doing the demo, the homeowner was able to visualize different aspects that she wanted to install and they could make changes from there. A typical project for Mike and his team at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives starts with a call or email to the team. Like with this project, Mike visits the site to walk the property with the home-
owner so that he can see what they envision for the home. As they walk the property, Mike gives the homeowners suggestions as to what he thinks will work best to highlight the features of the home and surrounding characteristics. “It's often important to give the customer my input. Whether it’s about a tree that I think would look good lit up or lighting around the pool at night for safety,” explains Mike. “A big part of it is getting the customer’s input too. We collab-

This large scale project included a pool, garage, dock, cabin-style house, and a big oak tree so there was a lot of work to be done. The project started with candy cane lighting around the live oak that went all the way up to the canopy which allows the tree to be seen from miles away on the lake. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives also lit up the homeowner’s stone walkway that led to the front of the house by
drilling down to the surface level so that the fixture isn’t visible. This created a beautiful uplighting to the front of the house and added an extra safety precaution. Another great aspect of this project was the festive bistro-style lighting that was done around the roof lines of the four buildings on the property, which everything gave a nice subtle, white ambiance. Practical Ceramics One Mt. Pleasant couple worked with Rhino Shield nearly a decade ago to coat the exterior of their home and the results have stood the test of time.
V
incent and MJ O’Brien’s Isle of Palms home is tucked away in a happy, quiet little location next to the marsh. When they built their home, MJ had a clear vision of how she wanted to style the home, both on the inside and outside. Once the dwelling was constructed, MJ and Vincent selected just the right paint color for the exterior.

It wasn’t long afterward, though, that the couple realized they were repainting the exterior on a frequent basis. Fortunately, the O’Briens attended one of Charleston Home + Design's annual home shows, where they met with a company that could solve their increasingly expensive problem. “We had all kinds of questions for Rhino Shield, and their

or of your home that doesn’t crack or chip, deflects UV-rays, and helps with energy efficiency.” Since the Elastomeric coating is eight-to-ten times thicker than regular paint, it requires a bit more prep work. “We come to a job and make sure every inch of the exterior where the coating needs to be applied is accurately measured, we make necessary repairs, and clean the entire surface thoroughly,” describes Jon. The top layer of the Elastomeric product is applied and bonds to the primer, creating that flexible membrane that moves with the home. Energy efficiency, structural protection, and
color customization are other aspects of Rhino Shield’s commodity. “Simply put, the ceramics are comprised of UV-reflecting ingredients, which helps regulate the temperature of the largest surface of your home,” expounds Jon. The Ten-Year Design Dilemma After over a decade in their Mt. Pleasant home, it was time for empty-nesters Tori and Greg Deaton to update a few of their spaces with the help of a professional interior designer.
E
ntering the home of Caliber Construction owners Tori and Greg Deaton is a unique experience of architecture, design, and family function. Together, they designed and built the family home that has been host to their children’s friends on a daily basis, has sheltered them through recent storms, and is now a domicile for 116 • CH+D • Winter 2019
just the two of them. It had also been nearly a decade since Tori had updated any of the interior features, which is the initial reason she called upon Bobbi Jo Engelby of Domain Interiors. The open area that is part kitchen and part pool table and gathering area was something that Tori knew needed a
face lift. “The pool table was honestly the biggest challenge throughout the whole process, because I wasn’t sure if we should move it and just have seating, but I also had no idea how to redesign the area if we kept it in place,” recounts Tori. Bobbi and Tori’s daughter both helped make the decision to keep it in place; partly because it’s

been a focal point for the family and Tori’s husband, Greg, loves to play, and partly because Bobbi knew just how to brighten the space. “The key was lighter paint, and once we got that on the walls and chose an accent paint for the ceiling detail, everything else fell into place,” describes Bobbi. From there, she added curtains, comfortable, modern swivel-chair seating, and some eye-catching accents.
“I actually met with Bobbi because I was initially thinking everything just needed a new coat of paint,” Tori adds with a laugh. “Another challenge I put forward was for Bobbi to use designs and colors that lasted for another ten years. It was surprising how she accomplished that with just a few small changes in most spaces that made the base architectural layers pop in a new way.” In terms of those smaller
changes, Bobbi suggested new lighting in the kitchen and banquet areas, as well as recovered bar stools and chairs for both spots respectively. Tori’s study was a much more dramatic transformation in terms of color. “Tori spends a lot of time in her study working, so she needed something that she loves and that is conducive to concentration. That’s why we took the same CH+D • Winter 2019 • 117

shade from the kitchen and darkened it by a few hues so that it’s more vivid, but also calming,” explains Bobbi. The former design of the study incorporated dark wood paneling on the walls and since that side of the house is surrounded by trees, there wasn’t much sunlight filtering through. Bobbi took the design cues from Tori’s mid-century modern desk and credenza, as well as her statement piece of artwork to create a space that Tori truly loves to spend time in now.

Stunning Rejuvenation A certain Mt. Pleasant homeowner was looking to revamp her master bathroom in a big way.
W
hen Laura Glaser began her remodel for her master bathroom, she knew she wanted a fresh, clean look. Laura first reached out to Kim Hood from Carpet Baggers, after hearing about them through a friend, in hopes of remediating a leak in the shower substrate. With Kim’s help, Laura’s bathroom dreams became a reality. “I wanted a successful product that would protect our investment going forward,” explains

Laura. “The finishes that Laura picked were very eye-catching,” adds Kim. The dynamic duo began with a gorgeous Bianco Dolomite mosaic tile on the floor; one of the great statement pieces in the bathroom. With the other tile in the space, Kim says this combination created a cutting edge look. “The Bianco Dolomite is a nice continuation of the Carrera and Calcutta marble that’s also used throughout the space.”
The Calcutta is gold with a creamywhite hue and it pairs beautifully with the gray hues that the Carrera offers. “I selected the wall color as the darkest tone seen in the space so that it accents the sway of darker colors,” Laura mentions. “You can see it a little bit more because it’s reflected and the color itself is a much brighter white. Then I took a high reflective white to balance out the brighter color and natural light.”

Kim then collaborated with Laura on a solution for constructing the perfect water-tight curbless shower. By honing the marble along the ridge line of the shower, Kim was able to produce Laura’s dream shower. To build on to the cohesiveness of the design, the same Bianco Dolomite tile that was used on the floor was used as a smaller tile in the shower as well. “The cross pattern that we created on the bathroom floor is perfect and fades into the smaller pattern in the shower and the overall effect works well,” Kim explains. Laura placed all her trust in the experts when it came to the intricate tile design. After being unsure as to how the pattern-driven wall would turn out, she put
her faith in Kim and the Carpet Baggers team to create an amazing design. “Her team knew to separate designs and lay them out in a fashion that would be aesthetically pleasing on the wall,” Laura declares. Throughout the process, Kim kept Laura’s ideas of transitional modern pieces while making helpful suggestions. Bug-Free Abode When deciding to debug their fourth Charleston home, these part-time Isle of Palms residents knew MosquitoNix was the only way to go.
A
beach-front property can often mean dealing with numerous annoying pests. However, these homeowners knew exactly where to turn to make sure they would live in a bug-free environment. Steven Lewis with MosquitoNix has worked with this couple on three of their other properties in

the Lowcountry over the years. “We’ve had a long-standing relationship with them,” Steve says. “The homeowner gave us a call and said ‘Hey, I’m building this new home on Isle of Palms and I need you guys to work your magic.” And that’s exactly what they did. side with the builder. “The builder can walk us through and as they get landscape plans, then we can use those plans to design the best system,” he describes. A
s a writer, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m fascinated and constantly confounded by how our society and a lot of its norms have changed in just a short period of time (especially within my lifetime). Reality TV and social media (to name a few) have had very interesting
roles, not just in how humans communicate with each other, but also how we perceive each other. Reality shows tend to add a bit more sparkle to the “real” lives of celebrities and we as viewers often take it as gospel truth. Which is why meeting the lovely Chelsea Meissner, a favorite TV personality on the locally-filmed Bravo series Southern Charm, and hair stylist extraordinaire, was such a breath of fresh air. Even from snippets of the show, it felt as if I already knew her because she seems to keep it so real. This perception proved to be reality—Chelsea is as laid-back in person as she is on the show. She also turned out to be even more of a kindred spirit that I could relate to on a tomboyish level. She talked of growing up in the country, of learning as a child what would later become survival skills, and being more at ease with her dog on a hiking trail than in a dress and makeup preparing to film a TV show. Her welcoming, easy-going, fun-loving vibe is as real as it gets.

Keeping It Real
Chelsea, tell us about where you grew up, a little about your childhood in the country, and what brought you to Charleston.
Between working and filming I don’t get a whole lot of free time, but when I do, I try my best to be on the water. There is something about the water that is freeing and rejuvenating for me. There is also something about the Lowcountry water in particular that feels like home. I love fishing, wake surfing, paddleboarding, sunrise surf sessions, and shark tooth hunting along Folly Beach with my pup, Tyson.
I grew up on the May River in Bluffton, South Carolina. At the time, Bluffton was a sleepy little river town where everyone knew their neighbor and all the kids played in the pluff mud after school. When my mother remarried we moved to Florence, SC where we lived on an 80-acre horse farm with an equestrian center. My entire family slowly made their way to Charleston after I settled here. I don’t know what’s better— getting to call Charleston home for the past ten years, or no longer having to travel for the holidays. I love having them all here, close to me. What do you do for a living now and how did you decide it’s what you wanted to do? I’ve been a hairstylist for five years now. After spending some time traveling and learning things about myself, I eventually decided it was time to work doing something I loved. I’ve always thought that I work too hard to work for someone else, so I finally decided it was time to do something for me, something I would love waking up to do everyday. Styling hair gives me the ability to be creative and help people feel great about themselves. It’s rewarding in that way. Being self-employed also gives me the freedom to travel, which is my true passion.
Not one to shy away from trying new things or learning new skill sets, I recently picked up archery. If you haven’t noticed a pattern, I am also someone who goes “all in,” so I built an archery range in my backyard. Something about hitting a bullseye from 40 yard away makes you feel really tough. [laughs]
Between filming and being a regular cast member of Bravo’s Southern Charm (and all that it entails), what do you do in your down time?
You were a competitor on CBS’s Survivor, too. Where did they send you that season and what made you decide to participate?

They sent us to Samoa, which honestly, I had never heard of. [laughs] It’s a beautiful island in the South Pacific, in case you haven’t heard of it either. It’s a crazy story how it all happened. I got a random call from a CBS recruiter asking if I had ever seen Survivor and if I had any interest in trying out for the show. At the time, I was working in medical sales and felt like it was too big of a risk to lose my job, which at that point was my dream job. I told the recruiter I had only seen the first season of Survivor and didn’t know much about it. So initially, I declined. After discussing the potential opportunity with my family, they were quick to make me feel like an idiot for not taking advantage of what could be the adventure of a lifetime. Needless to say, I called the recruiter back and told her to sign me up. We went through the extensive interview and screening process, then I went months without hearing back from them, so I assumed I didn’t make the cut. Then I got the call. They said, “Congratulations, you leave in two weeks.” Two weeks! Things became very chaotic very quickly, but looking back, it’s probably a good thing I didn’t have too much time to think about what I was about to get into. Overthinking choices can limit us in so many ways that we aren’t even aware of, you know? I might have ended up talking myself out of going if I’d had more time to prepare. That sounds like it was a whirlwind! And you had a hard, but great experience while you were there. Can you describe your experience and the friendships you developed? I can honestly say it was the absolute hardest thing I have ever experienced. It poured rain the first five days we were

on the island, which made it extremely hard to build a shelter and start a fire. A few days into filming I remember asking someone what the actual date was so I would always remember the worst day of my life. No exaggeration! It was August 5th, 2011. Worst. Day. Of. My. Life. And I still had over 30 days of filming on the island left to go. Our season was men versus women, too, which made camp life tough in the beginning. I quickly realized I was the country girl and that meant was going to have to pull a lot of the weight. Basically I was wearing all camouflage and catching wild chickens within the first few hours of meeting my tribe mates. How’s that for a first impression? I also got to put my spear fishing skills to good use. It was a proud moment for my dad when he watched me on Survivor teaching my tribe mates how to use a Hawaiian Sling. He taught me everything I know about spearfishing.

Needless to say, I did a pretty good job keeping my tribe fed. I loved the survival part of the show and the challenges, but hated the mind games and politics. For me, the best part was the friendships I made. I'm still very close to several people I met in Samoa. Kim [Spradlin Wolfe] who won my season is one of my best friends. We had a very strong bond throughout the show that actually brought us to the final round together. That strong bond has continued through our adulthood. It’s hard to describe to others who haven’t been through what we all went through on the island together. The bond you build with the people in your tribe goes beyond friendship. They become family. We see each other at our dirtiest, crankiest, smelliest, and it’s just so real that you know without a doubt that these people are going to be your friends for life.
Let’s switch gears a little and chat about your past few seasons on the locally-filmed Bravo TV show, Southern Charm. What is it like to be in the local and even some of the national spotlight? That’s actually something I’ve been trying to put into words for a while, and the best way I can explain it is sometimes it’s really cool and other times it can be difficult. I don’t think of myself as a reality TV personality or celebrity of any kind, so it’s still a little surprising when people recognize me around town. If I can say so myself, I’m really humble about it. I would rather spend the majority of my time working at the salon than be in the spotlight on a regular basis. That has a lot to do with who I am as a laid back, tomboy, introverted kind of person who was brought up with a strong work ethic. Mostly I think of myself as someone who just happens to be on a television show with friends,
and that doesn’t make me any different than anyone else. How did you initially get involved with Southern Charm? Cameran Wimberly and I were roommates for a year before she got engaged to her now husband. We remained friends, so she invited me to a dinner party that they were filming during season three of Southern Charm. I think they were trying to get Cameran to set me up with Shep Rose, but they were unaware that I had known Shep for years. The next season they were looking for a few new cast members and so they interviewed Austen Kroll and me to be on the show full-time. It’s pretty crazy how these things happen and kind of funny to look back on now.
Chelsea, your home is one of the most welcoming I’ve ever had the pleasure of stepping into. It’s so chic and vibrant—how did you know that it was the perfect house for you and what vision did you have for the renovation? When I pulled into the driveway and saw the massive live oak trees draped with Spanish moss, I was sold. So much of the appeal was the location, the yard, the trees, and the views of the Clark Sound. Then, hoping to have some good Star Wars juju, I closed on the house on May 4th. [Laughs] Now looking back, I truly believe ‘the force was with me,’ during the major renovation. Don’t we all wish that was the case with remodels? The house was
a completely outdated mess. Every wall was a different color, there was cheap vinyl flooring and nasty, old carpet all in a layout that made no sense. But it had been a rental up to that point, so it wasn’t really a surprise that things were a bit mismatched. I knew the house had good bones, though, and I could see it had a lot of potential. It just needed a facelift. Or so I thought. We had to redo the entire 2,100 square foot interior. And I’m not going to lie, it was a stressful process. But I knew when we opened it up and lightened the interior that it would become a house that I could call home—a place I would love to spend time in, to relax in.

You worked with your good friend Kim Spradlin Wolfe, who was on Survivor with you, to design the interior of the home, correct? How did the two of you work together to create this masterpiece? The conversation started out as somewhat of a joke. I don’t think either one of us really had envisioned it being as big of a project or commitment as it turned out to be. It just sort of came together that way. Thank God it did, too. Kim is insanely talented, so I’m forever grateful that she wanted to use my home as a project for her website. Having an interior designer as a best friend made the process so much easier because she already knew me and my style so well. Our main goal was to make the house feel like a reflection of me and I think Kim nailed it in every room. When you and Kim were putting your heads together about the design of each space in the house, how did you describe to her what your vision was? How involved were you in the selections for each room?
Because Kim knows me so well, we really didn’t do much communicating when deciding on décor. We of course sent a few Pinterest photos back-and-forth, but she intuitively had a grasp on what I was going for style-wise. She would send me lots of suggestions and I would say “I like this” or “I don’t like that”. Honestly, making selections was the easy part! There was only one thing we ended up having to return and that was a side table that Kim picked out.. I thought it looked like a toilet. [laughs] Were there any challenges you and Kim overcame together when designing the interior? How did you overcome those challenges and is there anything you would have done differently? I can’t think of any particular challenges we faced with the design. Most of the challenges were with the reconstruction of the home. Kim and I seemed to agree on most of the design ideas. If we didn’t, I always trusted her idea over mine. [laughs] When it comes to the design, there truly isn’t one thing I would have done differently. CH+D • Winter 2019 • 131

It’s clear from the design that you and Kim are not afraid of color, which is wonderful. What was your dream for the different spaces throughout and do you have a favorite room? My biggest fear was that my house would feel like a showroom and would make people nervous to relax and prop their feet up. I wanted the house to have its own character but also feel cozy and inviting. Neither Kim nor I think of ourselves as 'girly girls' so we often discussed the balance between masculine and feminine as the layers of the house came together. Each room has the perfect amount of colorful feminine touches with a bit of leather, wood, and metal to keep it all cohesive. I drew a lot of design inspiration from a juice bar downtown, called Huryali. I took Kim to Huryali for an acai bowl during one of her visits and we wrote down lots of notes. Every time I walk into my kitch132 • CH+D • Winter 2019
en I feel like I'm in the Caribbean, which make me so happy. Everyone goes nuts when they turn the corner and lay eyes on my retro orange fridge. My favorite room in the house is my bedroom. Deciding on such dramatic wallpaper was not easy. It’s a big commitment. I was literally sweating watching the wallpaper hanger put it on the walls. I'm so glad Kim pushed me out of my comfort zone because I couldn't imagine my room any other way. It reminds me of my favorite vacation spot, Costa Rica—definitely not a bad way to end a long day. I absolutely love every square foot of the room. “They” say that a house is never quite finished, so do you have any other plans for the house in terms of remodeling to do? The exterior of the house still needs some work but it’s going to have to wait till spring. I’m tired. [laughs] I’m plan-
ning on painting the brick exterior and putting in a Dutch front door. I’d love to eventually hardscape the yard and spruce up the front porch. I may even add a Charleston style gas lantern by the front door. Now that you’ve officially been through the whole process, do you have any advice that you’d like to share with fellow homeowners who are also remodeling their homes? [laughs] I was given some good advice that I didn’t put much stock in until the remodel was nearly over. When you’re in the thick of it, it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel and it’s really easy to get overwhelmed by all of that stress. Make sure that you remember it will be finished and when everything is done, you won’t remember how stressed you were in the middle of it. Just keep breathing and don’t worry, you’ll get through it.

To maximize the footprint of a small, coastal-meets-modern new construction vacation rental while also making the space functional for the homeowner’s family visits.
Challenge Accepted:
The two-bedroom vacation home needed to comfortably sleep between six and eight people, so Jesse and the team at JLV Creative undertook the mission of turning each closet, cubby, and corner of this home into functional, beautiful spaces. She started with where to place new sleeping arrangements that felt just as special as the master bedroom. On top of that, the sectional sofa folds out to a queen sleeper bed and the laundry closet was converted into a bunk bedroom for two. By adhering to her philosophy that the element of surprise and imperfection is the goal. Bobbi Jo worked with this homeowner, knowing that she would prefer not to redo her guest suite for several years down the road, so the two joined forces to develop the room around a truffle-brown suede sofa. From there, Bobbi Jo integrated modern and transitional elements in differing shades to maintain the room’s spa-like vibes. A shell color on the walls is soft, but not girly, while the headboard provides an eye-grabbing flare of drama. Even though entryways can often be one of the most challenging spaces to design, Lauren selected woven navy wallpaper by F. Schumacher, which adds character and sets a cozier tone for the room. By paying attention to scale, she then incorporated a large vintage rug, an oversized lantern, and proportioned furniture to create depth. A custom art piece by Kerry Steel adds the finishing touch. To create a multi-functional entertainment space for the entire family while maintaining the modern, coastal design of the home.

Plush velvet accent chairs and rich indigo hues created an inviting space that could easily transition from family movie night to weekend cocktails with friends. To retrofit an existing kitchen for homeowners needing a warm functional kitchen to entertain without removing or changing any of the cabinetry.
Challenge Accepted:
This design was envisioned by T. as an update that created a stunning kitchen with a modern flare, without adjusting the footprint of the kitchen itself. From that vision, the waterfall marble countertop was the key focal point. The butler’s pantry and kitchen cabinetry previously had clear glass doors, which made the kitchen look dark and empty, so T. exchanged it for Parisian antique mirror panels. New paint, new modern light fixtures, and custom bar stools give the kitchen a finished, modern flare. To design a home that is light and bright while also creating a comfortable and cozy feel throughout each room.
Challenge Accepted:
Creating a white house can be a challenge because it’s imperative to layer and texturize on that “canvas” so the spaces don’t come out boring, or sterile, or flat. Shay worked with the homeowners by using a primarily white and gray palette to give them the perfect bright, open feel they were looking for. She then incorporated neutral textures such as washed woods, bright metals, and distressed finishes to add dimension and interest. Challenge Accepted:
Shannon opted for a long sectional sofa to provide enough seating for regular guests. From there, she helped the homeowners plan just the right amount of space and organization for the kitchen by adding two islands, so the cook of the house could have plenty of elbow room when friends are over. By choosing a more neutral scheme and adding subtle patterns, Shannon created a room with interest that doesn’t distract from the beams across the vaulted ceilings and pulls attention from one side of the room to the other without overwhelming the senses. Because the space has two exterior walls and plenty of daylight, but with an almost entirely open floor plan, it was Betsy’s goal to set both spaces apart, yet help them mingle. A banquet area with custom bench seating also serves as a storage space. Shiplap throughout created a singular backdrop for the round table and complementary fabrics in shades of off-white, navy blue, and faux fur suede finish the room effectively. After reupholstering the red wing-back chairs and having the pembrook and table restored (all of which she bought from an old Charleston family downtown), it was clear to Edie that the room also needed a custom piano bench to complete the look and provide the perfect seating.
