Mitzi Schwertner of Gateway Supply sat down with Charleston Home + Design magazine to talk trends, the key to a successful franchise, and remodeling advice for local homeowners.

How did Gateway Supply get started?

The three original owners were coworkers at another supply house. They felt that the market needed more than one major place to purchase plumbing supplies and so they partnered together and started Gateway Supply Co.

How did Gateway really take off?

The plumbers, counter traffic, and having Kohler premiere showrooms helped us grow, along with our solid showroom sales people.

What’s the key to a successful fifty year history in the industry?

The market is always changing but our success has been in staying the course and not being afraid to grow, even when confidence in the market is weak.

Are there any trends that you’re seeing in the plumbing industry?

Apron sinks, freestand bathtubs, and steam-in showers are perfect features that the majority of homeowners are seeking recently.

What brought Gateway to Charleston?

Our corporate office saw growth potential in the Lowcountry market since we have showrooms in other South Carolina areas and decided it was a great place to help homeowners.

What services does Gateway Supply offer Lowcountry residents?

We provide clients an education on plumbing fixtures and brand styles. We also assist in finding solutions with spatial planning when remodeling baths and kitchens.

What advice do you have for homeowners looking to do some updates on their home?

Do some research first so that you can understand the products and ask questions to clarify because not all products are applesto-apples comparisons. Make sure that you know the quality of your purchases and are well-informed of your options.

Closet Concoctions Sales Manager Bart Strong and Co-owner Dena Brown, of Closets by Design weigh in on their favorite ways to organize closets.

He Said: I organize by type, then by color. I’m always in a hurry in the morning and this allows me to get the general idea of what I would like to wear and be able to grab items quickly.

My favorite accessory storage is the sliding tie rack. It can be used to hold so much more than just ties, and slides back behind the clothes when not in use. It is a great way to keep all of your ties, belts, and even scarves in a convenient yet discreet location.

I prefer a simpler closet, with shelving and hanging areas. Our closet system shines when a customer is able to showcase their shoes, suits, and even folded items such as sweaters and shirts. This provides great function (allowing you to quickly see what you want and grab it in a hurry) while still maintaining a fantastic showroom feel.

She Said: Clothes organized by color or by type?

Style of accessory storage?

Favorite closet design trend?

I organize by type. By that, I mean pants on one side, shirts on another, and dresses or “long-hang” items in their own space. It’s important to organize in a way that works best for you, so I don’t usually go by color.

“Accessory storage” makes me think of our pull-out baskets or tilt-out hampers, which are popular. The word accessory always makes me think of my favorite item that we sell which is our valet rod. The rod tucks away when you aren’t using it and telescopes out so that you can hang your outfit for the next day.

I love all of the built-in cabinets and drawers in closets. This eliminates the need to buy a dresser or armoire, especially if you have a flat-screen TV that you can mount on the wall in your bedroom. This is such a space-saver! We also build special countertops which our clients can use as a vanity or display area.

HOMEWORK At Home with

Kathy and Rob Bullock of Floor Coverings International of Charleston Kathy had been a stay-at-home mom and interior designer while Rob was working in manufacturing but owning something they could do together led Kathy and Rob Bullock to opening Floor Coverings International of Charleston. Their expertise in flooring and design led them to install custom area rugs and flooring from their company in their own home.

When determining what carpeting they wanted to use in the dining room, Kathy and Rob decided to go with a sisal rug. Floor Coverings International of Charleston customizes the size of the rug up to 13 feet 2 inches wide in any length.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON

The Craftsmen: Jay Miller, the owner of HWC Custom Cabinetry, began the company over a decade ago as a way to provide a quality product and service to Charleston homeowners.

The Craft: Jay works with his growing team of woodworkers and machinists to create interior and exterior custom cabinetry for homeowners across the Lowcountry.

Jay’s Backstory: A few years into a career with the Navy running nuclear propulsion plants on submarines, Jay met a friend who had just started a commercial cabinetry shop. After some thought and prayer, Jay moved on from the Navy to what he thought would be a stepping stone into an entirely different, non-manufacturing related career path. Eco-friendly Exteriors When building a home, there are many decisions to consider, such as tile, paint color, flooring, countertops, and more.

Perhaps one of the most important factors is the exterior of the home, as it makes the home’s first impression. Fiber cement is an eco-friendly building material made up of cellulose fiber, sand, silica, Portland cement, and a variety of recycled materials. For homeowners looking to build their dream green home, fiber cement is an option. This material preserves natural resources, eliminates VOC’s (also known

as volatile organic compounds), and improves the energy efficiency of a home. Another benefit of using fiber cement is that it is more durable than other building materials.

Because of its durability, fiber cement’s color doesn’t chip so there’s no need to reapply paint as often as traditional siding, which also contributes to lower VOC levels.

Recycled Recliner

In the past few years the concept of going green has become more and more popular for homeowners.

They are constantly looking for ways to make their homes eco-friendly and one, often overlooked way to do that is through furniture. The Journey recliner at Coralberry Cottage is manufactured in a variety of green ways.

With recycled steel in the springs and soybean-based foam instead of petroleumbased material, this chair leaves a smaller carbon footprint. The wood is sourced from suppliers who are a part of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. SFI is a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable

forest management by combining the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the protection of wildlife, plants, soil, and water quality. Also known as twist carpet, frieze is a type of carpet that has long and curly fibers giving it a modern shag vibe. This carpet is durable and great for families looking to minimize the worn look of carpet in their home.

A suspended light fixture, this style hangs by a type of cord or chain.

Pendant lights are often hung in sets above an island or the eating area and add a more industrial feel to the space.

This sink is made to sit on top of the vanity. It is often round or square and is made of either glass, porcelain, or ceramic.

This is a design element that can be added to cabinet doors for a unique accent. Homeowners can choose from a variety of patterns based on the style that they are going for.

This flooring is created by uncovering marble chips on the surface of a slab of concrete and then sanding it down to make it smooth. Terrazzo has longevity, comes in a variety of colors, and adds a unique detail to a home.

An induction cooktop is faster than other ranges and will not heat up without a pot or pan on it. Keep in mind that with an induction cooktop, homeowners need induction-compatible pots and pans.

When a sink is made of the same material as the rest of the vanity, it is called “Integrated.” This type of sink helps prevent mold and bacteria because of its continuous surface.

Company: Unique Constructors Credentials: Brian has always had the desire to build and create. His career began in highway and bridge construction and progressed into managing commercial projects around the Southeast. While he was working on a job in Charleston, he fell in love with the city, and ultimately decided to partner with a friend, Forrest Albaugh, to create their own construction company, Unique Constructors, which specializes in remodeling and new construction.

What are your favorite features of this particular project?

One of my favorite elements of this home is the efficient use of space in the kitchen. It showcases our ability to customize a space and bring the homeowner’s vision to life. This kitchen includes a custom bar and wine cooler, built-in appliances and a white oak island.

My other favorite feature is the expansive shower room because of the windows that provide natural light, a custom slab bench, a freestanding tub and beautiful gold fixtures.

Did the homeowners have any special requests for the design of their home?

The homeowners were going for a clean and comfortable, familyoriented environment that included detailed interior trim work and custom built-ins throughout. Other requests included creating an efficient and eco-friendly home.

What advice do you have for homeowners seeking to build a custom home?

My advice is to select a contractor who fully understand your vision. This will allow them to use their knowledge and experience to create a team of designers, craftsmen, and architects that meet your personality, style, and budget. This also ensures that you enjoy the process just as much as the finished product.

Company: Vinyet Architecture Credentials: A talented artist as a child, Justin sought a career that would let him put his passion and artistic skills to work. He earned his undergraduate degree from Clemson University and a Bachelor of Architecture from UNC Charlotte. Currently he is one of the principals at Vinyet Architecture, working on projects in Asheville, Rock Hill, and the greater Charleston area.

What were the homeowner’s goals for this home?

This home was intended to be a second abode for our clients. Because this is an infill lot, we were going to focus on privacy at the rear of the home.

These type of homes inherently need to open up at the rear, but given the proximity of the neighbor we had to be careful with our elevations and view corridors. Also, with this being a second home, the homeowners requested that it be functional for their growing family.

Why was it important for these homeowners to work with an architect on this project?

The clients needed someone to hear their wants and needs and translate them to paper, and ultimately create the best house for their lifestyle. Our ability to do this has allowed us to achieve a beautiful home that both our firm and the homeowners are proud of.

What were some of the challenges you faced while designing this home and how did you overcome them?

The site challenges were primarily working around protected trees on the site and achieving just the right amount of privacy. In addition to that, with the flood zone requirements and height restrictions there was a tight area in which to fit the livable area of this home on Kiawah.

The client wanted 12’ ceilings in the main living space, which affected the rooms above, which, in turn, affected the floor transition required at the second floor. It needed to flow correctly so as not to feel out of place.

Designer: Judy Bistany Company: Judy Bistany Interior Design Credentials: After graduating from the University of NC at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Judy went on to earn an interior design degree at Central Piedmont College in Charlotte, where she began her design career. Of all the places she’s traveled and worked, she loves working in Charleston most because of the exciting trends and metamorphosis of Southern style.

What were some of the homeowner’s design goals?

I believe that, like most of my clients, the goal is a comfortable, livable space that is functionally and aesthetically well-designed—a design that feels good and keeps getting better. And, above all else, is done in long lasting good taste.

What is your favorite element of this project?

I had a beautifully and architecturally designed home to work with built by a premier Charleston custom contractor, Chuck Lattif of Coastal Premier Homes/Arthur Rutenberg Homes. With over 40 years in the business, he gets it right over and over and I take care of the rest.

What challenges arose with this home’s design and how did you work with the homeowner to overcome them?

Our biggest challenge was an easy fix—they like to sleep in complete darkness so I had the custom draperies made with blackout lining.

What advice would you share with homeowners who are potentially seeking design help?

The right designer is a value that cannot be measured except by the enjoyment year after year of a personal plan that is tailored to their needs and the things that they love. Working with a professional interior designer is an exploration of possibilities, getting it right the first time, and avoiding costly mistakes which makes it an economic measure beyond compare.

uilding a custom home is often a long and daunting process for most homeowners. It requires lots of patience, time, and communication with the people who are working tirelessly to create the most functional home possible for the owners’ lifestyle. To Isle of Palms homeowner, Todd, this is where SHELTER Custom-Built Living stood out amongst the crowd.

Todd and Ryan Butler, owner of SHELTER Custom-Built Living, met

through mutual friends and Todd was immediately impressed with Ryan’s team of professionals. “It is incredibly important for a homeowner to trust the person they hire to build their house. The lines of communication should always be open and clear. Todd appreciated that about SHELTER’s procedures and we decided to move forward,” explains Ryan.

It helped the process go fairly smoothly, too, because Todd already had a definite budget and clear vision for the

design of the abode that was to fit onto the lot. “There had been an old house here, but it was long gone by the time Todd bought the lot and he wanted the new structure to fit in with the growing neighborhood,” describes Ryan.

“So we sat down and discussed the details of his plans for the dwelling.”

Since the lot faces marshland and the Intracoastal Waterway, Todd wanted a design that was a perfect blend of sophisticated-coastal. Lighter paint colors and tactful placement of shiplap throughout the interior bring the

coastal vibes with plenty of clean lines that provide that extra polish.

The open floor plan combined with the simplicity of the trim package also conveys an air of modernity that creates a cohesive overall picture.

Each area of the home maintains a

simply adorned background with light, coastal colors that are embellished here and there with warm barnwood accents. The kitchen, in particular, brings a wow-factor with white elegance and a multi-textured tile backsplash that adds to the room without overwhelming the eye with

Both Ryan and Todd agree, though, that the back of the house is one of their favorite spots to spend time.

we preserved to keep that old Charleston charm. It’s such a great spot to relax and enjoy the scenery,” says Ryan.

A Place in the Sun After he built his Mt. Pleasant home, Ross Curnett knew that he wanted to add a few upgrades to make his abode even more economically and environmentally friendly.

A

s an environmentally conscious homeowner, Ross Curnett had a vision for his family’s new Mt. Pleasant dwelling—make it as eco-friendly as possible. He installed an efficient HVAC system, had the builder design tighter, more cost-effective windows, and even spray foam in the walls to create the best envelope for the structure that would protect his loved ones.

Once construction was done, Ross had a new checklist for what would make his habitat even more economically adept. He contacted Andrew Dunn of Southern Current about installing solar panels to save more money on his power

bills. “Before the panels were installed and generating power, our bills were significantly less than our neighbors because of how we chose to build the house from the start,” describes Ross.

“But with the panels, our bill is a fraction of what it was and it’s great to know that we’re contributing to the environment as well.”

Often times, homeowners are surprised at the initial price tag of installing an effective solar panel system, which is why Andrew likes to share Ross’s example of the cost-to-benefit results of their smallest panel system. He explains, “Solar panel technology has been con-

stantly updated and perfected for nearly 50 years. What is common in panels now are uniform crystals that absorb the sunlight, and throughout the system the power that the moving electrons make gets converted into the AC power that we use in our homes.” From there, this power can be used in the home itself. Strategic placement on rooftops for optimal sun exposure also means that there’s often extra power that companies like SCE&G can use in other places.

They give homeowners credits for the extra voltage that goes back on the grid.

system. Ross himself says that he gets a sizable credit each year for his contribution to the power grid. “Between the power company credits and tax credits, Ross’s system will have basically paid for itself a few years from now,” adds Andrew, which means he will have truly free electricity. Each system and financial situation is a bit different, but Andrew rarely encounters a situation in which this kind of investment goal isn’t accomplished.

The biggest piece of advice that both Ross and Andrew want to make sure homeowners know is that it is important to talk with an expert on solar panels as well as a financial advisor so that each dollar is being well spent and each ray of sun is reaching its full potential. v

Dynamic and Durable Kimberly Tall turns a blank canvas into a relaxing Isle of Palms oceanfront destination property with island palettes and chic furnishings

W

orking with an interior designer as a part of a vacation or investment property process is still commonly viewed as a luxury service by homeowners, but interior designers do more than just choose colors, furnishings, and accessories. They design and style spaces with the vacationers’ needs in mind. Comfort, dura-

bility and tranquility are key desires for oceanfront dwellers looking for a relaxing place to call “home” for a few days.

Kimberly set to work asking all of the right questions about functional needs and personal tastes for each space.

Kimberly Tall, Lead Designer of Aiden Fabrics, was called into this Isle of Palms home to transform it into an island oasis with updates and furnishings suitable for the entire family.

“Before we even got into discussions about favorite colors and design themes, it was vital to learn how the home would be used when the homeowner was there, but also when the home

would be rented out,” says Kimberly.

“Spatial planning according to the number of people who would be staying at the house at any given time was a starting point, and from there, we worked on planning for adult spaces as well as the spaces for children and how to make them all work together in the home.”

Kimberly wanted to create a vacation-style home with spaces that felt design-forward and inviting for the adults

to relax in as well as functional areas for the kids to enjoy. The two main living spaces, for example, are both filled with durable and stain-resistant textiles like Sunbrella and Crypton Fabrics. The downstairs flex space was mostly designed with children in mind featuring colorful, fun and kid-friendly elements like the Queen bed swing, which can be used as extra accommodations.

Shelving Solutions This Mt. Pleasant homeowner was tired of straining her back in the kitchen and needed a quick solution to make the space more functional.

T

he kitchen is one of the most sacred rooms in a home. It’s where families gather and memories are made, so it’s crucial that the space functions well. When Patricia Warner and her husband began doing updates on their Mt. Pleasant home, their kitchen was at the top of the list. Their existing kitchen was unorganized and it was causing a lot of discomfort for Patricia, who was constantly on the ground to grab items she needed from the back of her cabinets.

A postcard from ShelfGenie seemed to be the answer to Patricia’s prayers.

When design consultant Shoshanna Szuch met Patricia, it was apparent that the two would be a force to be reckoned with. Both detail-oriented, they immediately started working on creative solutions to Patricia’s kitchen annoyances. The first issue came with a blindspot in one of Patricia’s lower cabinets. The cabinet originally had a lazy Susan in it but everything kept getting stuck because nothing fit properly. This led to Patricia having to crawl on the floor and strain her back to reach behind to grab things, which isn’t convenient for anyone. Another issue Patricia had was the way the kitchen was organized in general. “My husband and I both cook and we both have family who like to join in, but the kitchen wasn’t organized in a way that made it easy to find things or for me to direct people,” explains Patricia.

By adding glideouts and slopes to Patricia’s kitchen, Shoshanna was able to immensely increase the function of the space without having to completely redo it. Glideouts come in different heights, so it makes it easy to store a

variety of sizes. Slopes are shallow in the front and deep in the back, providing an easy sightline to the back.

Shoshanna’s design process begins with a walk-through with her clients.

“I look at functionality, at spacial use, how often they use certain items, and where they use it. Sometimes we move items all over the place, but we don’t always think to put something in a location even though that’s where we use it,” explains Shoshanna. ShelfGenie isn’t limited to what’s in the catalog or on the website so clients can customize if they don’t see what they need. Within about an hour and a half or two hours, Shoshanna is able to provide her clients with a design and an estimate. Once that’s done, she reviews it with her client, makes any necessary changes, and they go from there.

Over the years, Shoshanna has perfected the way she goes about conducting a client meeting and that includes asking her favorite question. “Are you a shakeas-you-go person or do you measure your spices carefully?” By asking this question, Shoshanna is able to pinpoint where homeowners should put their spices and other equipment, which will help eliminate the annoyances and improve the accessibility and usefulness of the space.

Sheltered from the Storm After the experience of staying in their home through a recent hurricane, one Summerville couple decided it was time to make a change to the way they protect their domicile.

H

urricanes Matthew and Irma seemed to reawaken the city’s inhabitants to what it is to experience the destructive power of the Atlantic coastline’s weather. After two damaging hurricanes in two years, and struggling with plywood window protectors, one couple in Summerville knew it was time to change the way they approached hurricane protection.

With elderly parents nearby, it was no longer feasible for the pair to embrace their former philosophy that things can

be replaced, and leave town until the city is deemed habitable again. That’s where Brian Burnup with Muhler came into the equation. A locally-owned company, Muhler has been engineering and adjusting the way the Lowcountry residents approach storm protection. “We hold patents on a majority of our products, offer free in-home consultations, and we bring samples with us to help homeowners visualize how certain products would look on their home,” says Brian.

The company provides countless combinations of their varying prod-

THRIVERS & SURVIVORS Charleston’s very own instagrammer and former Survivor contestant, Jaime Huffman, tells all about her time on a desolate island, her childhood in the Upstate, and how she balances marriage, motherhood, and a booming marketing career.

A

s an impressionable teenager who grew up during the rise of the reality television era, I was all too aware of the happenings on each of the most well-known shows. I was one of millions who watched with bated breath during the very first season of American Idol, and I took in every

possible second of shows like Big Brother, Fear Factor, and The Bachelor. But the show that started the reality tv craze opened a whole new world of philosophical study for my adolescent mind. CBS’s Survivor seemed to set the stage for all other similar entertainment and, like many, many other viewers, I couldn’t look away. The game of trust, teamwork, strategically voting others off the island, and even, in some cases, backstabbing fellow tribemates was a game I knew I could never play well. Watching others do it on national television, though, was a great way to live vicariously. Jaime Huffman, the illustrious subject of our fall cover story, however, seized her opportunity to do more than imagine herself on whichever island Survivor left the contestants for that particular season. She played the game and she played it well. And more than that, she found romance along the way. Jaime will be the first to tell you that she participated for the possibility of winning a million dollars (for paying off her student loans), but she also freely admits that she was never someone who sat on the sidelines and watched other people enjoy life. She wants to be in the thick of it, she loves to talk to people, to challenge her creative mind, and her role on the fifteenth season of the longest-running reality television show is just one way that she has lived her life to the fullest.

THRIVERS & SURVIVORS Jaime, you had an active, entrepreneurial-minded childhood, correct? Tell us more about your formative years.

I’m originally from Fort Lauderdale, and my mother would take my sister and me to the beach several times a week so that I could go diving for shells. Instead of a traditional lemonade stand, I had a seashell stand where I sold the shells that I had collected.

Since my dad was really into sports, I played just about everything from football, golf, and baseball, starting when I was about five. It was just a great way that he and I bonded and I totally grew up as a tomboy, which most people don’t believe when I tell them now, since I love the color pink so much. [laughs]

I can tell that you’ve carried this work ethic with you, considering all the things you do now! How did you manage to choose a career with so many interests?

It wasn’t easy! I changed my major about three or four different times. [laughs] But I always knew I wanted

We lived on two acres in the middle of nowhere, near Cowpens, which most people don’t even know exists. Now I’m the Marketing Director for Thurmond, Kirchner & Timbes Law Firm. I work with the most amazing group of attorneys and I get to put my digital marketing, social media, and PR skills to good use.

I love legal marketing but I wanted an outlet for all of my creative energy, so I recently started my side hustle, Charleston Blonde Events & Weddings. Helping companies and brides plan big celebrations is one of my favorite things to do. Every event is different, and re-inventing the wheel is part of my fantastic journey as an event organizer.

Speaking of, your Instagram feed is such a wonderful, Charlestoncentric social media account. What inspired you to start it?

I fell in love with Charleston on the first day I vacationed here as a child.

When I moved here two years ago, I started taking daily strolls downtown with my son and snapping pictures with my old Canon camera. I started uploading the photos on my account with my personal recommendations and my account began to grow. Now I share hotel and restaurant recommendations, shopping advice, outfit ideas, local event information, and anything I think would help locals and tourists enjoy the Holy City!

Well, let’s switch gears a little and talk about your time on Survivor. Firstly, how did you even find out how to get involved with the show?

people encouraged me to audition for Survivor. My initial response was, “Heck no,” but then they explained that all Survivor participants get paid no matter what.

It’s such a crazy story, honestly! I was in college at the time, studying journalism, and I was randomly asked to work as Catherine Keener’s stand-in. I Googled it really quick and realized I just had to stand around while the crew got the lighting and cameras ready for the actress. Sounded easy enough, so I decided to go for it. I ended up doing several fun projects for Tona B. Dahlquist casting while I was at the University of South Carolina and Tona’s daughter, Jamie, started working as a casting director for CBS.

I had some student loans that were hanging over my head. Not a ton, but they still stressed me out, and I needed to pay them off, so I asked, ‘How much? Actually, I don’t really care what I have to do, as long as I can pay my student loans.’ Jamie Hill ended up calling me and suggested I audition. She offered to come to Columbia and help put together a casting video.

A few days later Jamie came to town and we put together a hysterical video. I was in the middle of the Broad river fishing with a pink ruffle gingham bikini and pink Hunter rain boots on. Then they sent me into the Strom Thurmond Center and had me sit in a hot tub with a bunch of guys surrounding me, who then turned to the camera and said, ‘Pick Jaime. The tribe has spoken.’ It was so ridiculous, and I didn’t even know what to think, but I was like, ‘Why not? This is kind of fun.’

One day on set I told a few people that I was a girl scout for 12 years and was a catcher on my Varsity softball team in high school. I think my tomboy roots surprised people because as much as I love sports, I also love stilettos. But at the end of the conversation several

THRIVERS & SURVIVORS That is quite a whirlwind. What was the rest of the process like and how much did you have to travel to make it work out?

As soon as the video was submitted, I heard from the Survivor casting team in Los Angeles. I had to do several phone interviews. Then they decided to fly me to LA for the casting finals. Once I arrived in LA, there were maybe 30 of us that they put up in a hotel in Santa Monica. We weren’t allowed to speak or make eye contact with any other finalists. It was like being grounded. We had people monitoring our every move. For a type A extrovert, it was really hard. I went a little stir crazy for that week that I was in the hotel.

Long story short, I stayed for the week, did the interview, was sent home, and I got a call the next week.

They said ‘We’re sorry.

What we didn’t tell you is that this interview was for a Survivor-at-sea type show called Pirate Master. And your personality test says you’re too friendly for this pirate show.’ So I was bummed, because I had to take a week off from school, I got back and was stressed because I was playing catch up and I didn’t even get the part.

Luckily, about a month later, they called back and said, ‘We didn’t want to tell you then, because we weren’t sure, but Mark Burnett and Jeff thought you were great, they just think you’re better for the actual Survivor. Would you be willing to come back out again and do the whole interview again for Survivor? ’

I wasn’t thrilled about another week stuck in silence with psych evaluations, personality tests, and adult babysitters but I knew it was the opportunity of a lifetime so I had to go for it. Even after my second round of interviews they still didn’t give me a yes or no answer. I flew home with no answers and thought, this is the craziest thing ever. I’m done.

After two weeks of uncertainty I finally received a call that changed my life forever.

‘Would you like an aisle or window seat?’ I said, ‘Um, what?’ ‘You’re going to China,’ they announced.

Millions of people watched the 15th season of Survivor play out, but can you describe your time in China, filming the show?

Ha! Well, I don’t think our season was really planned out properly. I think it was just a great PR stunt to coordinate with the Beijing Olympics. They didn’t realize it was monsoon season, there was no vegetation or fish to catch, no coconuts to eat. The conditions were miserable. All the things you would normally get on a season of Survivor, we didn’t have any of it on this island in China. They said it was one of the worst seasons to be on in Survivor history, because the conditions were just so bad. We got trench foot, parasites, my hair fell, and our rice supply molded. It was pure misery. I honestly didn’t think it would be tough, I mean I had been camping my whole life. By day four, I literally prayed to God that I wouldn’t die. I had to eat earthworms and snails. I lost 20 pounds in 21 days. It was a million times worse than I could have ever imagined.

The storms were so bad sometimes that lightning was striking and we didn’t have much in the way of shelter. The camera crew would leave us during those storms, too. Not to mention we were all so incredibly gross while we were out there that they had to put Vick’s vapor rub under the noses of the crew so they wouldn’t smell us. [laughs] Despite those things, the experience was great because it was a really diverse group of people that I would have never met if we didn’t do the show. Overall, I think it made me appreciate being away from electricity and my cell phone and just technology in general, because we get

so caught up in that lifestyle that we don’t even realize what else we’re missing out on. I’m still friends with most of my tribe because we just talked and I learned so much about them and they learned so much about me, we really built true friendships. I know more about them than I know about some of my best friends from college and childhood, simply because all we did was sit there on that island and have real, meaningful conversations. So even though it was incredibly hard, constantly raining, and gross, I think it was a true blessing for me to be part of the show. It was something that not a lot of people can say they’ve done.

Do people still recognize you as a contestant even after more than a decade has passed?

Yes, and it still kind of blows my mind that people will stop me and say, ‘You look so familiar.’ But these days, I’ve stopped explaining why that might be. [laughs] Most people don’t stop my husband Erik because he looked totally different on the show, but I still look basically the same.

And there have been over 30 seasons of Survivor at this point, so it’s amazing that people still remember a season that happened over ten years ago.

I think it’s because the conditions were so, so bad, that people really tuned in and took notice. The season before it didn’t do well, but ours had something like 13 million viewers per episode, which is nuts. It’s pretty neat to think that we might have been the season that saved the show, whether it’s actually true or not. But the show is still going, so who knows.

You also met your future husband on the island, right? What was your relationship like at first and how did it grow into what it is now?

That’s right! Erik was part of my tribe and I think we clicked right away because we were both from the Upstate.

He was from Greenville and I was from Spartanburg, so we grew up just 30 miles apart, which is crazy to think about.

They normally aren’t allowed to cast anyone from the same area, but he was living in Nashville at the time, playing in a band called Florez, so that’s how that happened. But we could talk about home and working at the Haywood Mall as kids and all that stuff, so it was nice to feel like I had a friend out there amongst complete strangers.

He was someone I knew I could trust, too. Out there, it was kind of scary getting to know people at first, because you never knew who might have trust issues, or who might end up stabbing

you in the back, so I could look at Erik and say, ‘If you stab me in the back, I’ll go find your momma and tell her.’ [laughs] So we leaned on each other a lot, plus I fed him my extra snails, which made him happy. I think all of that combined helped us build our unique friendship into a relationship, since we were already so close from knowing each other’s emotional states and going through that kind of trauma together. You just know everything about each other at that point.

After filming ended, we both had a flight back to GSP to see our families, so he came with me to meet my family and I went to eat Mexican with his, and then he came back to Columbia to meet all my friends at college. It was so funny, because we weren’t allowed to tell anyone what we’d been doing, so before I left, I told everyone that I was in Canada with my grandparents. But then I came back skinny, tan, and with some random guy, so they were all like,

‘What’s actually happening here?’

Anyway, I stayed one more year in college to finish my double minor, and then moved to Nashville and we backpacked across Europe together after I graduated. I worked in public relations for a women’s ministry in Nashville while Erik was touring with the band, and then he proposed to me on a trip to Charleston. We were on the Battery and it was just fantastic.

Around that time, my mom was also diagnosed with cancer, so we were battling that from afar, and I didn’t want to put any extra stress on my parents to have to plan or pay for any part of our wedding, but I also really wanted to get married in Charleston.

So I just Googled ‘Charleston wedding contest’ and, let me tell you, the Lord works in mysterious and wonderful ways. I entered us in the CVB’s Charleston wedding contest, which was a giveaway worth $80,000. And we won. I couldn’t believe it!

After we had the wedding in Charleston, we went back up to Nashville.

Erik was still touring with the band and also modeling for Ford, so he was traveling so much to New York that he had to rent an apartment. It got to the point where we were like, ‘We can’t sustain this.’ Erik decided to go back to Physician Assistant school, we moved home so I could be close to my mom, too, while Erik fulfilled his pre reqs. I was pregnant with our son at the time, too. Then Erik got into PA school, so we had to move down to Naples, Florida.

Basically, we moved six times in seven years, and it was crazy, but we always knew we wanted to plant roots in Charleston, so we prayed and hunted for jobs. He applied at Roper St. Francis and I applied to TKT, and we both got the jobs. Right away, we knew it was a sign.

A gallery wall of gilded and wooden frames and the Huffman’s smiling faces creates a happy, stylish space full of memories.

Let’s talk about your house. Other than your love for Charleston and its beauty, what made you decide to build a house here? What was your vision for the design?

I actually came down to Charleston to look for houses while Erik was still in Naples, working. Nothing was really speaking to me, because everything was kind of either crazy colors or a fixer-upper or just not the right space. So I start-

ed looking for lots instead of houses. I knew at that point that I needed a blank canvas to work with, so to speak. Then I found this lot and it was perfect, with a view of the marsh, and right across the street from the pool and the kid’s playground, which is great for our son, Harper. We had to act quickly, though, because I knew that someone else was already looking at the lot, too, so I bought it without Erik ever actually seeing it.

THRIVERS & SURVIVORS in our home that isn’t made locally. All of my artwork is from local artists, and I worked with GDC Home to help me create the stunning interior. Before I worked with Jonathan and Lori, I didn’t really think that I had a particular kind of style. I just thought, ‘Well, I like coastal vibes, but I don’t want it to look like a beach house. Plus I like a touch of modern and I love color.’ When I talked to them, I just said, ‘I don’t know what I’m doing, please help!’ [laughs] They did a fantastic job, though, finding just the right mix of style for our taste.

They worked with the fabric of some curtains that I had made by Blush Label, which are kind of crazy and super colorful. I was amazed—they made the rest of the house pop with color without it seeming over the top or too loud. I am just so thankful for everything they did.

Designers Jonathan and Lori worked magic on our upstairs rooms, too. I have this fabulous pink palm print wallpaper in our bedroom, and I was sure that it would stump them, because people see it and they love it, but sometimes they wonder how to decorate around it, myself included. Jonathan and Lori made it the focal point by adding simple colors and rattan pieces to maintain that tropical feel. I just love all of it.

Well, Jaime, what do you think is next in your saga of being a social media mogul and a marketing guru?

that way. We both knew if I didn’t buy it right then, we wouldn’t get it.

We wanted an open floor plan for the layout, because I just love natural light.

I’m a light, happy person in general, so I need lots of light. The floor plan we chose is called the Sanderling, and we love it because of its openness and all of the windows. It was important to us to have clean lines throughout the house too, so we pretty much stuck with white

walls and some shiplap accents, particularly around the fireplace. We also chose the shaker-style cabinets for the kitchen for that reason. I prefer to add pops of color to a white or more neutral background, so I just love how that worked out.

You worked with exclusively local vendors, too, for the interior design, correct?

Yes! I don’t think there’s a single piece

I have so many fun projects in the works. Right now, I’m launching a digital marketing campaign for our new TKT Law Firm office in Summerville.

I love public speaking and recently started presenting social media seminars to large audiences. I am going to start working with several small Charleston businesses as a marketing and social media consultant. And I have a ton of fun weddings and corporate events to plan in 2019. I’m keeping busy, which is just the way I like it, and am really looking forward to building relationships and friendships in the Charleston community.

The custom laser cut gold peacock cabinet panels are one of many focal points in the dining room which also features a round area rug, a round dining table, tassels on the smoked glass cabinet, and floral chintz on the settee. The mix of modern elements with traditional touches cultivates a timeless look perfect for the Lowcountry.

by Benjamin Moore, one of the easiest and magnetic wall color trends of 2018, was a simple way to make the kitchen stand out.

The black color palette is accented with French bistro and midcentury pairings, hardware from Belwith, wood textures, and stone to give different layers to the space.

The Master Bedroom This master bedroom is a space with feminine and masculine touches. The modern bed frame provides feminine curves while the bachelor chest, night stand, and library cabinet give a masculine aesthetic. The print on the duvet gave Bill Goudelock the inspiration for the decor throughout the bedroom.

A bold coral is seen throughout the fabric elements of the design and pairs beautifully with the soft taupe and white palette. Glamour is added to the room with the brushed nickel hardware, shimmering fabric, and crystal finials.

The Guest Bedroom This guest room is unique from top to bottom. Terry Stephenson wanted the design to give a French West Indies vibe by blending originality, style, and authenticity while also created a welcoming retreat for guests. The unique touches come from the variety of repurposed global elements.

The headboard was repurposed from 19th century French armoire doors, the wall accents come from Europe and Africa, the pillow shams were fabricated from antique French monogrammed linen napkins, one pillow was made from Moroccan cactus silk fabric while another was made from antique European grain sack trimmed in Indian silk sari ribbon.

The Powder Room Adding a Chinoiserie wallcovering and an Asian-influenced vanity mirror with bamboo detail to this powder room kept its historic feel while also giving the space a modern facelift. Every detail in this room is a carefully thought out combination of old and new.

The blue metallic background of the wallcovering is lighter than the darker tones that were featured in the Chinoiserie of the past.

Karen Germond wanted to make sure this room gave a nod to present design trends while also ensuring that the architecture of the home was still recognized. To do that, she took specific elements from the past and found ways to update them for a current vibe.

The Sitting Room In a room with dark finishes, Audrey Wood’s goal was to soften the features using a classic blue and ivory palette. Depth and character were added to the room with a mix of wood and iron furniture.

A variety of timeless accessories including Chinese pottery were paired with contemporary accent pieces to add some sparkle to the sitting area.

Since the sitting room is the first room off the foyer, it was important for the design to speak to the overall elegance and design aesthetic of the house. With a bay window looking out onto Tradd Street, passersby get a glimpse into this simple and elegant space.

The Living Room Since the living room serves as the main entertaining area for the family, comfortable seating was at the top of Allyson KirkpatrickClark’s list. This design was meant to bring the historical roots of the house up to date for the 21st century occupants which meant a layered-over-time look was the way to go.

Seating around the fireplace included vintage mohair lounge chairs and cotton velvet for the long sofa. Other materials like brass, glass, and mirrors were carefully selected to bounce light and complement the lush fabrics.

The Master Bathroom This master bathroom is an extension of the bedroom so Meredith Gale wanted to create a separate space that was still cohesive to the overall design of the master suite. For a small space, the design featured a lot of texture including a burnt orange velvet x-bench and woven elements.

A custom orange printed vanity skirt adds a fun pop of color to the otherwise neutral bathroom. Add in some tropical plants throughout the space; the steamy environment of a bathroom provides them with the perfect home.

Updated Look for Special Anniversary

T

his year marks the 50th Anniversary of Melcer Tile. The Charleston tile experts opened their doors in 1968 and have been growing ever since increasing their tile selection and expanding their staff. Local Lighting Showroom Redesign

Carolina Lanterns revamped their product arrangements and wall displays to show off the variety of options they offer.

After visiting the January 2018 Dallas Lighting Market, the folks over at Carolina Lanterns were inspired to revamp their showroom.

They partnered with Hudson Valley Lighting Group and brainstormed ideas for the new layout, and Hudson Valley even helped Carolina Lanterns with designing new wall displays and product arrangements. The redesign began in March 2018 and it was an all hands on deck project with the staff hanging products, contractors building wall displays, and electricians running wires.

The renovated showroom even has a redesigned lighting lab that showcases LED recessed can lights in every temperature, size, and shape.

Home Inspiration at Décor Wars The Charleston Fall Home Show was able to provide advice for homeowners for their next home improvement projects. One new event to provide inspiration for homeowners was Décor Wars. Four Charleston design companies Ethan Allen, CHD Interiors, Coralberry Cottage, and A Little Staging Sells were tasked with decorating a bookcase. The

designers were also given a special task of incorporating a “twist” item into their design as if their client told them last minute that they had a family heirloom to be featured on the bookcase. They were given different ideas for themes such as industrial, coastal, traditional, or they could come up with their own. Once the bookcases were all set up at the Gaillard

Center, the public could walk by and take pictures for inspiration galore and vote for their favorite design. When the home show wrapped on Sunday, it was time to count the ballots. Congratulations to Marisa Little of A Little Staging Sells on being crowned the Décor Wars Champion 2018 and thank you to all of the designers for participating.
