Don’t be startled...I’ll be giving you the details too! Let’s begin by introducing these ingredients. Aishwaryashree (Golu), Bhavya (Maut) and Shraddha (Sadu) are the three ladies behind the instagram handle - Vegetarian Biryani. The three friends are pursuing their undergraduate degrees in design from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kangra. This vegetarian squad has created a handle that is as colourful and tempting as a delicious biryani, even better - a vegetarian biryani! The handle is all about good food and beautiful places. Most of the places featured are in or near Mcleodganj and Kangra as exploring nearby places is their motto. The handle, at the moment, has 70 posts and 111 followers. Vegetarian Biryani is a reliable source to look up to when you’re confused about what to eat in Mcleodganj. The handle is fun and real. Oh and yes they give special prizes to their special followers (you might get the shagun if you become the 1100th follower!). So all you vegetarians who wish to expand their eating options and all the non-vegetarians who wish to try something different (than chicken) - go follow @vegetarianbiryani on Instagram and share your love for food with the squad.
JOYFUL OR NOT? Studying in a place like Kangra is very diffcult for a foodie. The only way to calm down the cravings is to go to Dharamshala or Mcleodganj and enjoy the good food along with a beautiful view. A few cafes are very famous in the area.
One of them is Joyful Cafe, located in the peaceful area of lower Dharamshala (Sidhpur), a few steps uphill from the Norbulingka Institute. The easiest way to reach Joyful is by taking a taxi from Kangra. Another way is to take a local bus to Sheela chowk and from there to Sidhbari. The cafe is a 15 minute walk from Sidhbari. Joyful is a beautiful cafe with a blue door. The interior is mostly wood. The cafe is famous for its thin crust pizza along with other Italian delicacies. However, when I recently visited Joyful, the quality of food seemed to be a little degraded.I ordered my usual - Veggie Lover’s Pizza and Iced tea. Along with these I wished to try a new pasta. Somehow I did not enjoy what was served to me. The pizza crust was very dry and hard. The toppings were very less. The taste was mostly bland. The iced tea was excessively sweet and did not have any flavour. The pasta was drenched in olive oil of a low quality and tasted really bad. The vegetables in the pasta also tasted differently. I was very disappointed after I had the food and started comparing it to what I ate three years back, when i came to joyful as a part of a leisure class trip. My experience was wonderful then. My friends and I ordered a Veggie Lover’s Pizza and a White sauce pasta. A 12-inch cheesy, thin crust, wood red pizza with onion, green pepper, black olive and mushroom toppings was served. The generous amount of cheese and the combination of Italian herbs made the experience heavenly. Then came the perfectly cooked creamy white sauce penne pasta. The texture was smooth and rich. For the dessert we ordered brownie with vanilla ice-cream and chocolate syrup. The ice-cream was home made and the hot chocolate sauce was perfect - neither too sweet nor bitter. The food was authentic and delicious. Since then, Joyful has been one of the favourite hang out places but my recent experience has changed my views for the place.

food talks with Foodie A person with pure love for food (or you may say a Punjabi!) Punjabis don’t eat out of hunger but due to their love for eating. One such Dilli ki Punjaban is Ridhi Sobti, a student from NIFT Kangra, who has an ardent love for good taste. Domino’s Pizza is Sobti’s all time favourite but no Dilliwala can stay without chat-pati Chaats and Bhelpuris. For lunch, Sobti’s usual is Bob uncle’s dhaba where she eats Egg bhurji with plain parantha and drinks a glass of Praveen uncle’s special soda. The college canteen only becomes the saviour when there is Dosa or Idli available! “I like eating South Indian too”, says Ridhi while adorably describing her love for food. She also talked about her room mate cum best friend, Swarnima Gupta’s cooking experiments in their room using an electric kettle and all of this just to calm her cravings down! Ridhi usually likes to visit Bakes and Brews - a hangout cafe in Sidhari, Dharamshala. “I really like the coffee there, and the Pizza too, oh and the DBC is amazing!”, says this foodie. When asked about the thing that lifts up her mood, she mentioned that she loves to have Kulfi at Daddu’s shop and chill with her friends. Sobti is a happy-go-lucky girl always ready to create crazy moments and make people laugh out loud. I had a great time sharing the Domino’s pizza with her.
