ABSTRACT

iv

This report is an outcome of my internship at Harper Collins Publishers India and with Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Programme. Harper Collins Publishers India My first six weeks of the industry internship were a bliss as I was a part of a book paradise! The Art department of Harper Collins helped me in leaning the tiniest aspects of the publishing a book. I worked on various projects including branding and creating invites. I also created illustrated for the book “Scent of a Story by Shankar Ghosh. Other than this I worked on various smaller projects like making grid layouts and box sets. All in all, Harper Collins was a great learning experience. Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Programme The last two weeks of my industry internship were another experience altogether. I got the chance to work for the Government of India through the Swachh Bharat Internship Programme. For this, I chose Rakker village in Dharamshala. The place is already very clean but needs a lot more improvements. Since the younger generations are going to be the future caretakers of our planet, I focused on the students from the government schools in the village and taught them about the mission through movie screenings and other activities. The Nishtha NGO, an organisation in Rakker, is already working towards making the villagers aware and the village clean. Swachh Bharat Mission gave me the opportunity to reach the roots of India and understand their way of living.

LOGO When the publishers Harper & Row, with their logo of a torch, merged with Wm. Collins, with its fountain symbol, we had the opportunity to create a mark to celebrate and identify this union. The resulting design joins the essence of both symbols - fire and water - into a new icon for the new company, HarperCollins.

59

CONCLUSION

60

Taking up the internship at Harper Collins Publishers, India has not only given me an insight about the way books are published, but also helped me grow more by inspiring me to read more. I have learnt the basics of creating/designing a book/document. It has helped me to brush up my software skills and understand the importance of the little details like bleed, slug area, sizing, colour correction etc. I learnt about various formats of book printing and that you can calculate the spine of the book too! My mentors and other colleges helped me in understanding the working process from the scratch. Another important thing that I learnt was that how taking out a sample print out of your work is necessary at every stage in order to work on your design in a better way. The environment of the office was very friendly and co-operating. I have also been able to improve my time management skills and motivate myself to do better. My experience at Harper Collins was a great one and I would surely wish to work in publishing house in the future.

SWACHH BHARAT SUMMER INTERNSHIP

64

ABOUT The objective of this internship programme is to engage the youth across the country and develop their skill and orientation for sanitation related work, amplify mass awareness on cleanliness and cement the people’s movement (Jan andolan) aspect of Swachh Bharat Mission. This is in line with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call on October 2, 2014 for each individual to devote 100 hours to Swachhata through the year. The programme is expected to not only provide a great learning experience to students but hopes to also further the existing measures undertaken by the government in ensuring a clean and healthy India. As a part of the internship, the activities that participants may conduct have been categorised into three clusters : 1) Education-Communication activities: These could range from street plays to music and dance performance 2) Solid Waste Management related activities: These involve cleanup drives and activities like waste collection, segregation, developing compost pits 3) Support in toilet construction: The students need to submit a report on the Swachh Bharat Internship portal through a supervisor assigned by the institution who will be responsible for guiding the students through the internship as per guidelines.

ABOUT RAKKAR VILLAGE

66

https://www.airbnb.co.in/rooms/20852730

Rakkar is a small village in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, 8 km southeast to Dharamshala. The place is that can help you lead a simple, peaceful life amidst the glorious nature, along with kind mountain people. The people are very humble and unaffected by the modernisation. The village has a Gram Panchaayat, Government Primary and Secondary schools, a Vet, a community hall and an NGO that provides medical help. How to Reach : If you are coming from Kangra, Take a bus to Dharamshala tha goes via Yol Cantt. area. Drop off at Sidhbari bus stand and then walk your way to Rakkar village which will take about 15 to 20 minutes. If you are coming from Dharamshala, take a bus to Fatehpur chowk and then from there a sharing cab to the village. This is the route via Khaniara road.

67

METHODOLOGY

68

STEP 01 - RESEARCH POSITIVIST METHODS Surveys (Verbal surveys in schools, gram panchaayat, NGO and households) PHENOMENAL METHODS Individual Interviews and Focus Group Interviews (amongst households and students) - Both by the method of Laddering METHODS FOR TACIT KNOWLEDGE Contextual Enquiry Context Mapping STEP 02 - PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION The research collected from both primary and secondary methods was used to identify the actual probelm in th area. STEP 03 - PLAN OF ACTION A plan of action was drafted in order to complete the goals of the internship as well as the tasks. The activities were performed in a systematic way and the people were made aware about the campaign.

69

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

70

On the basis of the primary and the secondary research conducted, it was analysed that Rakkar is a very clean village as compared to the neighbouring areas because of the initiatives taken by the Nishtha Foundation. The fact that Himachal Pradesh is a open defecation free state has made a lot of difference in the conditions of the villages. The basic problem that I observed was the lack of dustbins in the area. The people, inspite of knowing about the importance of cleanliness, were not able to manage the waste collected. The dumping area has all the waste mixed up which is a cause of pollution and diseases. The school premises were also not clean enough and the students did not have any idea about the recycling methods. The premises also did not have any dustbins. The students were also not aware of the initiatives being taken by the government. The volunteers of the Nishtha foundation also gave us an insight about the situation of the waste management in the area. “We have been working towards making the village completely mess free but inspite of the continuous efforts of making people understand the importance of waste management, they all throw everything in one pace. This is one of the reasons we removed dustbins from the area!, said Mr Vijay, an employee in the foundation.

71

PLAN OF ACTION

72

1. INITIAL RESEARCH (7 hrs) An indepth research was conducted in the beginning in order to study and analyse the situation and create a plan of action. 2. DOOR TO DOOR VISITS (40 hrs) The village has about 400 households out of which about 160 were covered. Interactive sessions with the villagers about the importance of waste management and segregation were conducted. Many of the villagers already knew about the process and they helped us in explaining it to others. The sessions were quite diffcult in the begining due to the language barrier but eventually the villagers started co-operating.

Outside a house in Village Rakkar

73

3. MOVIE SCREENINGS (8 hrs) Movie screenings were conducted for the students of the government schools of the village in 5 different batches for better understanding of the students. Many of them were actively taking part in the interactive sessions after each movie and gave many ideas for recycling plastic and paper.

Movie Screening in the Secondary school

74

4. DANCE PERFORMANCE (1hr) A short dance performance was prepared and performed in front of the students of each batch after the movie screening. The students were very excited and danced along. The performance was for about 4 minutes each and the preperation time was 45 minutes. 5. WASTE COLLECTION DRIVE (25 hrs) The NGO is already working for waste collection and thus we joined the team and went from houses to houses collecting plastic waste. The people were not able to differentiate between types of waste as well as the soft and the hard plastic.

Waste collection with Nishtha Volunteers

75

6. COMPETITIONS FOR STUDENTS (5 hrs) Drawing competition for the students till class 8th and slogan writing competition for 9th to 12th std students were conducted. They were asked to explore their creativity on the topic clean and green India. 10 prizes were taken out for the best performers.

76

7. MEETINGS WITH THE NGO (4 hrs) The NGO has been a huge support for us. We got to know a lot about their initiatives as well as the techniques they are using to help the people of Rakkar. The NGO has its own team of people who go to the village twice a month for collecting plastic waste for upcycling. They have created bricks by compressing the plastic and then packing it into a plastic sack. These bricks have been used to create a shed with the help of cement coverings. The NGO also gave us a helping hand during the movie screenings. They told us about various other ways that can be helpul for making the village cleaner.

Visits to the NGO

8. MEETINGS WITH THE GRAM PANCHAAYAT & THE VET (4hrs) To analyse the situation in the area, we visited the gram panchaayat and the local vet (for animal sanitation) and discussed with them the problems as well as a few ideas about the compost pits. We also discussed about hoe the students can be made aware of the Swachhta abhiyaan so as to get the new generation involved in the mission.

77

WSince the area had very heavy rainfalls, I decided to replace the wall painting with posters. I designed them using the pictures as well as the illustrations related to Swachh Bhaarat Mission. These will be subitted to the NGO who will put them up on the public walls around the village as well as in schools. METHODOLOGY - research on types of poster - checking for walls around the village - set target audience - young generation - deciding which issues to focus on - rough sketches - deciding the style - final poster designs in both Hindi and English

83

CONCLUSION

84

Swachh Bharat Summer Internship was a great experience. Choosing a different line like this one and getting the opportunity to work for the country was an overwhelming experience. Inspite of the communication gap due to language difference, I was able to work in the village because of the humble and welcoming nature of the residents. The interaction with the school students and teachers gave an insight about how these creative minds have ideas to recycle things. Conducting the competitions was a good way to interact with the students even more. My experience to work under the Swach Bharat Mission was a great one. I got a chance to meet and talk to the people in the roots of India.
