Royal LePage/Peifer Realty personnel said they saw a need at the Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre, and acted quickly to fill it.

“We saw non-perishables but nothing fresh,” Nead said of the food on hand. “Kids need fresh food for lunches for school.”

The duo came up with the idea of donating internally at Peifer Realty, and received strong support.

Already, they have raised enough money from coworkers to send fresh fruit and vegetables to the centre from now until November and from April to November of 2020.

The collected total dollar donation is $1,190, but Sarah Graham of Sarah’s Farm Market, where the Royal LePage team went to get fresh local fruit and

veggies, pledged to double the effort.

“I loved the idea. It’s easy to say yes to such a thing,” Graham said. “So we’re matching the contribution. That way, we can contribute too.”

Home sales in Chatham-Kent in August were down a mere eight from the same time last year, and remained above the 10-year average for the month.

A total of 129 units changed hands, according to the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors.

This was down 5.8 per cent from August 2018.

On a year-to-date basis, home sales totalled 899 units over the first eight months of the year, edging up 0.8 per cent (seven sales) from the same period in 2018.

“August home sales remain strong, which is surprising given how low inventories are,” said Steve Carroll, president of the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors, in a media release. “The in-

tense competition among buyers for limited listings this year continues to drive very strong price growth.”

The average price of homes sold in August 2019 was $255,682, rising 14.1 per cent from August 2018.

The more comprehensive year-to-date average price was $249,746, jumping nearly 20 per cent from the first eight months of 2018.

There were 154 new residential listings in August 2019. This was a decrease of 11 per cent on a yearover-year basis.

Active residential listings numbered just 253 units at the end of August, up 5.9 per cent (14 listings) from the end of August 2018 but below the same period in every other year.
