This past November, local police officer Andrew Gaiswinkler was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, which is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

Gaiswinkler was rushed by ambulance to London and immediately began chemotherapy. He has been in and out of hospital since, receiving blood

Millennials intrigued

According to Point2Homes’ list of Top Millennial Hot Spots in 2018, Chatham-Kent ranks 67th of Canada’s top 85 cities for millennials.

Canadian cities were ranked based on income, housing affordability, unemployment rate, life satisfaction, low crime rate, health care, climate, level of education, and the percentage of millennials in the total population.

The top three ranked cities weren’t the largest in Canada and seven of the top 10 best cities for millennials have a population under 500,000.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent and council have been focused on resident attraction and retention in the community since 2011, when the census indicated a 4.2 per cent decline of our population. Efforts targeted young people (aged 15-39), immigrants, and active retiree populations to address the decline, and continue through the CK Plan 2035.

“News like the Top Millennial Hot Spot list shows these efforts are paying off and underscores the importance of community-wide initiatives that help secure Chatham-Kent’s future for upcoming generations,” Mayor Randy Hope said in a release.

The baCK to Chatham-Kent initiative was launched in response to the notable population declines occurring in the 15-39 year age group in 2011. The campaign celebrates young people that have chosen to

return to Chatham-Kent and encourages others to do so by promoting and connecting them to local opportunities.

The latest census numbers, from 2016, report a significant reduction in the total population decline (to two per cent) and improvements in key age cohorts for young people.

The 30-34 year old demographic increased between 2011 and 2016 by 5.4 per cent (from -8.7 per cent), and the rate of decline for those aged 2024 (-8.3 per cent) and 35-44 (-4 per cent) have improved from -13.7 per cent and -14.9 per cent respectively.

These trends support a positive picture of Chatham-Kent’s increasing attractiveness to young people and their desire to make Chatham-Kent home.

“After living in the big city (Toronto), I couldn’t wait to slow down the pace and return home to my family and friends. The cost of living in Chatham-Kent is also incredible.

We purchased a 10 acre lake front property for the same price as our 850 square foot condo in Toronto,” said Rosanna Mitchell, who recently moved baCK to Chatham-Kent.

“It’s no surprise that Chatham-Kent would make this list,” said Steve Carroll, President of the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors.

“The latest stats in the CKAR out of town home buyers survey show 30 per cent of homes sold in C-K are to people from outside the area.”

6. Amending the following Zoning By-law Schedules: a. Schedule A: Zone Classifications & Schedule B: Zone Exceptions – where certain properties are re-zoned; b. Schedule C: Minimum Distance Separation (MDS) – to be deleted in its entirety, as MDS is regulated

by Provincial legislation; and c. Schedule F: Floodproofing and Flood Fringe Areas – where the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has provided updated mapping of flood prone areas.

Reasons for Approval The background and reasons for the Decisions are incorporated in the two Planning reports both dated January 8, 2018, which were adopted by Council. No submissions were received with regard to the Zoning By-law No. 23-2018. Two written submissions were received by the Municipal Clerk in advance of the Public Meeting with regard to Zoning By-law No. 22-2018 and were provided to Council for consideration. All submissions received, have been, on balance, taken into consideration by Council as part of its deliberations and final decision on this matter. In the opinion of Council, the proposed Zoning By-law Amendments are consistent with the Provincial Policy Statement and the Official Plan.

General Information Applicable to the Above Mentioned Planning Act Approvals Any person or public body who, before the decision was made or the by-laws were passed, made oral submissions at a public meeting or written submissions to Council may appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) in respect of these applications by filing with the Municipal Clerk of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent not later than 4:30 p.m., local time, on March 19, 2018, a notice of appeal setting out the objection to the decisions or by-laws, and the reasons in support of the objection. Such notice must be accompanied by the filing fee of $300.00 for each application appealed, made payable to the Minister of Finance by certified cheque or money order only, as required by the OMB. For additional OMB fees please see the OMB Fee Schedule.

Only individuals, corporations and public bodies may appeal a decision or by-law of the Municipality to the Ontario Municipal Board. A notice of appeal may not be filed by an unincorporated association or group.

However, a notice of appeal may be filed in the name of an individual who is a member of the association or the group on its behalf.

No person or public body shall be added as a party to the hearing of the appeal unless, before the decision is made or the by-law is passed, the person or public body made oral submissions at a public meeting or written submission to the Council of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent or, in the opinion of the Ontario Municipal Board, there are reasonable grounds to add the person or public body as a party.

A full copy of the above-noted decision and by-law is available for inspection in the Planning Department at the Civic Centre (2nd floor), 315 King Street West, Chatham or at any of the Municipal Service Centres in Dresden, Blenheim, Ridgetown, Tilbury and Wallaceburg.
