The Rogers Hometown Hockey tour stop in Chatham-Kent is headed to Wellington Street in downtown Chatham this weekend.

The two-day festival features free family-friendly activities, entertainment, giveaways, and NHL alumnus Tomas Kaberle.

It will culminate in an outdoor viewing party of the live Sportsnet broadcast of the Tampa Bay Lightning at Winnipeg Jets game, hosted from Chatham by Ron MacLean and Tara Slone on Sunday.

“We’re honoured to have an event like this take place in Downtown Chatham,” said Paul Shettell, Chair of the Historic Downtown Chatham BIA, in a media release. “We’re expecting thousands of attendees over the weekend to take in the event, visit our restaurants and shops, and have downtown Chatham broadcast to a national audience.”

The festival will take

place on the stretch of Wellington Street between Third and Fourth Streets. Festival hours are from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday.

The Parade of Champions and NHL pre-game show will begin at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Citizens are encouraged to get into the spirit of the event by celebrating Hometown Hockey Day in C-K on Friday by wearing a jersey to school or work, decorating their storefronts or homes in red or with a hockey theme, or by participating in a physical activity.

Chatham-Kent was announced in August as one of 25 host communities for the season-long touring hockey festival.

Hime heading back to Haiti

You can take the Hime out of Haiti, but you can’t take the Haiti out of this young Chatham woman.

Emily Hime said she’s about to have the perfect Christmas – celebrating the holidays with her two families, her blood relatives here in Chatham and then with her Haitian extended “family” at Maison Ke Kontan, her orphanage in Haiti.

She’ll head to the Caribbean country on Boxing Day to deliver needed supplies and special presents to the orphans at Maison Ke Kontan (Happy Heart House) in Port au Prince.

In 2012, at the age of 20, Hime took over the orphanage after initially volunteering to help get the children’s home up and running.

“I truly believed that all children have a right to the basic necessities of life. I have met so many children in Haiti, Ghana, the Philippines, who have gone through severe trauma or who were just born into extreme poverty but who are sooooo intelligent and such strong and wonderful human beings, and it absolutely breaks my heart that because of the country they were born into, they will not have the same opportunities and resources that we do to succeed.”

When Hime took over the orphanage, she worked closely with the children and staff, and lived on site.

“We spent months living in unimaginable circumstances. No toilets, no running water, no furniture, no electricity, you name it,” she said. “During this time, I look back and realize how grateful I am for getting the opportunity to go through that with my kids in Haiti. It allowed us to bond and get to know each other on a whole different level. They became my family, as did our staff. We did everything together and had to work together just to survive.

That’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Hime returned to Canada in late 2015. Since that time, it has been a challenge.

“It’s been a big adjustment being back in Canada, I think I am still adjusting. It was a life-altering move for me as I had found my calling and fell so in love with the kids and people of Haiti,” Hime said. “I really struggled coming back and being away from the kids. But thankfully I’ve been able to continue our work in Haiti with a great board of directors who continue to help me out and who have taken on a lot of the responsibility that I was carrying on my shoulders. We also have a great team of Haitian staff on the grounds caring for the kids.”

She’s also facing challenges in her personal life.

Hime is mother to Beau, a two-and-a-half-year-old bundle of smiles and energy. She’s a single mom who has been juggling multiple jobs, as a doula and teaching at St. Clair College. She’s also a volunteer firefighter.

Through it all, Hime remains committed to her Haitian kids.

“They are my family now. I have seen who they truly are and I have fallen in love with each and every one of our children and their own unique personalities. They have gone through some horrific things during their short lives, and yet continue to smile, dance, laugh, and love stronger than anyone I know. They inspire me every day and have profoundly impacted my life. They made me who I am today. The least I can do is continue to provide them with opportunities for hopeful and successful futures,” she said.

Hime is so appreciative of the assistance the people of Chatham-Kent provide.

“These past six years would not have been possible without the support of Chatham-Kent. I can’t even count how many times I would cry myself to sleep wondering how I would feed the kids next

The support in Chatham-Kent begins at a very personal level, Hime said. Her parents have been very supportive, helping raise funds, watch after Beau when needed, such as when she heads south later this month, and they have also visited Haiti firsthand to see what drives Hime.

She is collecting toys and items to take to Haiti right up until Dec. 23. For anyone interested in donating, visit himeforhelp. org. You can also donate via eTransfer through himeforhelp@gmail.com.

In fact, Hime hopes for monetary aid that would allow her to purchase as many supplies and

gifts as possible in Haiti, to help spark that country’s economy any way she can.

“We are looking for donated items, but we would like financial assistance as well to purchase some items to support the Haitian economy,” she said.

While her name is front and centre in her organization’s name, HimeForHelp, she said it is far from a one-woman operation. She credits the charity’s board members with doing some incredible heavy lifting in terms of generating funds and donations, and thanks numerous volunteers who have headed to Haiti to help out directly at the home, or in the nearby community.

Beau, Hime said, doesn’t truly understand his mother’s dedication to the children in Haiti, but he’s supportive.

“He’s said a few times, ‘I want to go to Haiti too.’ We actually

had a talk the other night about how I used to live there and take care of the kids, and he asked why, and I told him because they didn’t have anyone else to take care of them then,” she said. “Our kids call Beau their ‘little brother’ and I really want him to have a relationship with them as well.”

But for now, Beau will remain at home with his grandparents, while Hime heads to her second Christmas, a trip made possible thanks to the people at Bartlett Restoration in Charing Cross.

“They sponsored our last fundraiser, and when we were talking at the event, they asked when I was planning to go back next. I explained how I was hoping to go over Christmas as that is my only time off from work at the moment, but that I’m not able to go as ticket prices had sky rocketed. That’s when Brian and Lorna said they would like to help me go over Christmas,” Hime explained. “I went home and cried. I was so over the moon excited that I couldn’t even put it into words.

Porchlight event brings in $44.5K for Chatham Goodfellows The Chatham Voice

Support for the Chatham Goodfellows No Child Without a Christmas campaign this year continues to roll in from all over Chatham-Kent, and organizers couldn’t be happier.

The Goodfellows 64th annual porchlight campaign is one of the highlights this year, according to volunteer Tim Mifflin, who said they surpassed last year’s amount.

“The Board of Directors are very pleased with the great turnout. Over 550 volunteers canvased the neighbourhoods of Chatham and collected enough non-perishable food to fill over 90 banana boxes, and enough new toys to filled 70 banana boxes,” Mifflin said in a release. “In addition to the toys and food, over $44,500 in cash was donated, which is $3,000 more than the 2017 porchlight amount.”

He added the Chatham Goodfellows Board of Directors are appreciative of the continued support and generosity of the volunteers and the Chatham-Kent residents.

Community supporters include Boston Pizza staff, who were the 2015 Chatham Goodfellows Presidents Award winners.

Mifflin said each year the staff of Boston Pizza pool their tips earned in a single day and purchase toys for Chatham Goodfellows. This year Boston Pizza staff collected $2,000.

Union Gas employees have been long-term partners with Chatham Goodfellows and in 2016, Union Gas Employees received the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Union Gas employee have donated thousands of hours of sweat equity, and over $600,000 in toys, food and cash to Chatham Goodfellows,” Mifflin noted.

As well, this year’s fifth annual Santa’s Day Off sponsored by Real Canadian Superstore and Blackburn Radio, held at the Superstore, had a total of $4,000 worth of toys donated, along with $705 in gift cards and cash.

Over the 64-year history the Chatham Goodfellows the group has provided Christmas to the less fortunate for citizens in Chatham and the former townships of Chatham, Dover and Harwich, and they partner with the Merlin Legion/Kinsmen to provide for those in need in Merlin, Dealtown, North Buxton and the former Township of Raleigh.

For people still wanting to help, Street Sales are being conducted on Friday and Saturday, and food packing/ delivery is at Spirit and Life Centre (St. Joseph Site), on Dec. 18, with packing beginning at 8 a.m.

Water Wells First spokesperson Kevin Jakubec is stepping down from his role as advocate for the people in Dover in Chatham townships for the past two years, turning the job over to Chatham Township’s Jessica Brooks.

Jakubec made the announcement in a recent press release, and said he is leaving the group to spend more time with his family, and to look after his mother.

The Brooks family, one of several, has been without water since the summer, when the well on their property became clogged with sediment and they have been trucking water into a tank on the farm ever since.

The current PC government did cancel the Otter Creek wind farm project scheduled to start construction this past fall near Wallaceburg, but Jakubec said they are still waiting on Ford to make good on his promise to conduct a full health hazard investigation into the contaminated wells.

Passion to help Kudos to the HimeForHelp organization and specifically Emily Hime for the continued support of an orphanage down in Haiti.

The Chatham woman started running the orphanage at the age of 20. Think on that for a second.

Here is a young lady, not even done with her post-secondary education yet, and she’s in a foreign country, a relatively dangerous one at that, pouring her life into a cause to help the orphans at Maison Ke Kontan (Happy Heart House).

She has given the kids there everything – sweat equity galore for all the long hours getting the orphanage working properly, working to achieve results in a rather corrupt country; financial support as she went there with $500 in her pocket, knowing she’d be able to feed the kids for a month; and love, unconditional love.

Speak to Hime for a couple of minutes and you’ll quickly feel her passion to help those children.

She took over the orphanage in 2012 and returned to Chatham in late 2015 to raise a family of her own and put down roots in her community of origin.

Today, she’s working multiple jobs and volunteers as a firefighter, has a great young child in Beau, 2, but she is constantly thinking of the kids thousands of miles to the south.

Thanks to the giving nature of the people of Chatham-Kent, on Boxing Day, she will return to Haiti, bringing presents and necessities with her.

Bartlett Restoration personnel support HimeForHelp. And now the company is paying for her flight to head to Haiti.

Others have donated toys and toiletries, and the organization is looking for additional cash donations (Hime’s suitcases will be overflowing as it is), so she can purchase additional items in Haiti.

She is quick to share any credit in the success of HimeForHelp. Heck, she tries to deflect it outright, pointing to board members of her charity and volunteers for the great work they do.

She’s right, but without Hime’s passion leading the charge, there is no way HimeForHelp enjoys the fundraising success at the same level.

We wish Hime and the children of Maison Ke Kontan a very special Boxing Day.

Kind words carry such power Sir: The power of kindness. Recently, I slept like crap. I tossed and turned, and was up for hours on end. I woke up the next morning late and in a rush. I even went to the extent of putting cucumbers on my eyes to bring down the puffiness.

I rushed out the door and made a quick stop at the Superstore for some groceries for the office. That’s where it all changed.

On my way out, this super kind lady complimented me on my hair.

She said it was beautiful.

She then proceeded to ask if I did professional makeup. I laughed and said no. She said that I was beautiful and radiant. I told her I had barely slept last night and she had made my day. I walked out with a smile on my face.

The moral of this story is to remember, even the smallest compliment or kind word can change someone’s day. You never know what is going on behind someone’s smile.

Sir: I’d like to applaud the editorial in the Dec. 6 Chatham Voice, “Advice to councillors.” I was originally supporting Randy Hope who served as mayor from 2006 to 2018 because I was concerned about the election of an inexperienced mayor trying to manage experienced council

members.

Now we have had a proper shakedown in the city’s council chambers, with eight of the newly elected councillors being newcomers to the municipal scene and Mayor Darrin Canniff being a council veteran. I have heard positive feedback

about the new slate, and I think we can expect both big and small improvements in the next few years.

Perhaps the editorial writer’s request that councillors “sweat that small stuff. Not the minutiae, but the small stuff” will be printed on a sign

to hang in our council chambers.

I’ve only lived here for a few years, but, even though some people say Chatham seems to be failing, I am convinced my wife and I made the right move.

Sir: Your paper recently ran a great letter from Frank Doyle on the do’s and don’ts of the new side walk from Keil Street along Grand Avenue West.

The heading read; “Sidewalk rules are confusing.” Not really, Frank.

been mostly built for bikes, which is a good thing if used right. But there are not many people doing long hikes past the condos near the college. I just feel it is a big waste of money to put this new one from Keil to the college.

There was already a good sidewalk, most of which was nicely back from Grand Avenue. If a

cyclist and a pedestrian or whoever are both on the right side, he or she on the bike must pull over to the left side to pass or it would be nice if a bell or horn was really enforced for cyclists to let someone know they are behind them. They could catch one’s arm in passing.

Some bikes do have bells.

It seems to me the

public should have had a say about tearing up a perfectly good sidewalk.

What is done is done.

Congratulations to our new Mayor. Maybe the public will get that chance to have more input in the city or at least their ideas about issues – it’s their tax money.

New provincial regulations could cost Chatham-Kent taxpayers

Changes to provincial regulations regarding the clearing of snow from sidewalks could get expensive for the municipality.

Or it could result in property owners doing the heavy lifting.

Pat Bruette, acting director of public works, said a recent shift in provincial regulations requires the clearing of sidewalks of snow within 48 hours of a typical snowfall, and adding the responsibility of de-icing the sidewalks as well. It’s the latter element that is cause for concern, he said.

Chatham-Kent has more than 400 kilometres of sidewalks. They use five in-house sidewalk plows and contract out the remainder. Bruette said they can normally hit the 48-hour target, but he’s worried about the de-icing.

“It becomes quite an issue,” Bruette said. “ Timing isn’t as much of an issue as the actual de-icing and how many times you have to de-ice per storm.”

He added the minimum maintenance standard is to put down salt.

“I’m not sold it will work that well on some of our sidewalks. They aren’t like roads where it drains off after melting,” he said, add-

ing roads are sloped for drainage, but sidewalks aren’t. “Sidewalks are more like a bathtub. If it melts, it’s going to refreeze.”

So instead of having compacted snow on a sidewalk, there is the potential for ice.

Bruette said he hasn’t put a dollar figure on what it would take to adhere to the new provincial guidelines, but expects it will be well into six figures.

“It’s significant. It’s not like just adding $100,000 to the budget. It’s going to exceed that quite a bit,” he said.

But there is another op-

tion, or perhaps options.

They involve ratepayer participation.

“Nineteen municipalities in Ontario have a bylaw that has the property owners responsible for sidewalk clearing,” Bruette said. “Public assistance is just a request at this point, not a bylaw (for C-K). Any help we can get is a great help budget wise.”

He expects the issue to come before council in the near future.

Bike lanes are also mentioned in the new provincial requirements. The guideline said they are to be cleared between eight and 24 hours after a

storm, depending on the amount of snow that falls.

Bruette said any bike lanes that are attached to a road will be plowed once the main vehicular lanes are plowed.

“When a plow gets its route cleaned up, it will return to plow that bike lane,” he said.

In the case of the bike trail that runs along the north side of Grand Avenue and Grand River Line out to Prairie Siding, Bruette said it will be treated differently. Because it replaced a sidewalk from Keil Drive to past the college, it will be plowed like one all the way out to Bear Line.

School boards choose new chairs The Chatham Voice

John Van Heck will chair the separate school board, while Jane Bryce will oversee the public board.

Both the St. Clair Catholic District School Board and the Lambton-Kent District School

Board picked their leaders recently at meetings where the new boards were sworn in.

Van Heck, who has been a St. Clair Catholic board trustee since 2006, was acclaimed to the position of chair of the board, a post he has held for the previous three years.

Trustee Mat Roop was elected to the position of vice chair.

Roop served as a trustee for the former Lambton County Roman Catholic Separate School Board from 1984 to 1986.

He retired from the St. Clair Catholic District School Board after 22 years as a manager in

facility services.

Trustees for the LKDSB elected Bryce as the chair and Randy Campbell as vice-chair of the board.

Bryce has served as a school board trustee since 1994.

She has formally held the positions of chair and vice-chair

of the board.

Campbell was elected to the LKDSB in 2006 and has served on various board committees and is a long-standing member of the LKDSB supervised alternative learning committee.

2 locals charged in exploitation sweep The Chatham Voice

Two Chatham men were swept up as part of a province-wide sweep against online child sexual abuse recently.

In total, 122 people, including 11 youth, face 551 charges.

Police are calling it a snapshot of one month’s worth of work by Internet Child Exploitation Investigators that make up the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet.

OPP, working in conjunction with 26 police agencies were involved.

The charges include sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, possession of

child pornography, make available child pornography, distribution of child pornography, making child pornography, accessing child pornography, luring, making sexually explicit material available to a child.

In addition, 55 victims were identified during the investigations and referred to appropriate community-based resources for assistance.

Police also seized a total of 17 firearms, three of which were loaded handguns.

Locally, the Chatham-Kent Police Service executed a warrant at a residence in Chatham on Nov. 7. Fifteen devices were seized for analysis. A 26-year-old man

A 25-year-old man was charged with possession of child pornography and accessing child pornography.

‘The Chatham-Kent Police Service is fully committed to the Provincial Strategy. These offences are not just photographs

and videos, they are real children in highly abusive situations,” Det. Steve Kloostra, ICE Unit Supervisor, Chatham-Kent Police Service said in a media release. “The members in our Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) are specifically trained and dedicated to investigating these types of offences against children.

We have and will continue our efforts to pro-

tect children and identify those responsible for their exploitation.”

From its inception in August 2006, the entire Provincial Strategy has completed 50,403 investigations and laid 20,901 charges against 5,686 people. During that period, 2,009 child victims have been identified in Ontario and beyond.

At a recent press conference, police displayed a

video showing 834 unique IP addresses associated to the possession or making available of child sexual abuse material or were present on a suspected child pornography website. These IP addresses were observed over the month of November alone. Police describe these numbers as the “tip of the iceberg” in relation to online child sexual exploitation in Ontario.

AgMedica Bioscience is expanding.

The Chatham-based licensed producer of medicinal cannabis is acquiring two indoor processing facilities, designed to bolster the company’s future production and cultivation capabilities and supplement its existing infrastructure.

The first facility is located in London and features 100,000 square feet, a space which will be used for automated processing, packaging and bottling.

With this additional capacity, AgMedica officials said they are positioned

to further expand their oil extraction capabilities and leverage the recently announced strategic investment in and licencing agreement with Herbolea.

The second facility is located in Chatham, Ontario and provides 300,000 sq. ft. that is ideally suited for future cannabis-plant cultivation.

In addition to these new facilities, AgMedica continues to enhance its existing properties. The company’s Phase I Riverview cultivation site is 200,000 sq. ft. and has indoor capacity to produce 6,000 kilograms of cannabis annually.

Polar plunge back in late January

It seems some people will do anything for money – money to help others, that is.

For members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service, that includes taking a very chilly leap into icy waters.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service Polar Plunge returns for a second year at St. Clair College. Fifty participants raised more than $14,000 last year for Special Olympics Ontario, and organizer Const. Jason Herder hopes to top the $20,000 mark this time around.

On. Jan. 19, 2019, police officers, support staff, firefighters, EMS personnel, students and any interested members of the public can take the frosty dip.

In fact, you can choose your dip time too. Herder said they’ve expanded the event this time around and there are plunges at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. In between, there will be a charity barbecue as well.

“One of the things we learned coming out of our first plunge is we wanted to expand it. The school wanted more involvement too,” he said. “We got more creative and made ours a little more unique and added the night plunge.”

When participants register online, they can choose when they’d like to take the dip.

As for the barbecue in between, Herder said it expands their fundraising possibilities.

“It’s another way to raise funds for Special Olympics. For those who may be too chicken

to plunge, we can raise funds this way,” he joked.

Herder, who went in twice last year – in uniform – said if they reach their $20,000 target, he’d go in three times this year.

He thinks there is a good chance he’ll have to make the trifecta of plunges.

“We had excellent community support last year. It’s already starting to come in this year,” Herder said. “It’s coming together quickly and is growing rapidly.”

Retired police officer Mike Currie led the way in fundraising last year, Herder said, but Dep. Chief Jeff Littlewood was close behind.

Littlewood and Chief Gary Conn have indicated they are taking part again this year.

They aren’t alone, as a high-profile former officer is gearing up to go again, and hopes to take 17 of her newest friends with her.

“Councillor (Amy) Finn will be jumping,” Herder said. “She’s issued a challenge to other councillors and the mayor.”

The most wonderful time of the year With Christmas fast approaching, I found I just wasn’t getting into the Christmas spirit as our family usually does this time of year.

But thanks to a couple of volunteer opportunities, I am in that place where Christmas music doesn’t make me want to poke nails in my ears, and

when I say, “Merry Christmas,” I mean it.

It started with my daughter, Brenna itching to decorate for Christmas in our house – her favourite time of year. Then she let me know her Grade 11 chemistry teacher at UCC, Mrs. Kovacs, asked all her students to make two dozen Christmas

What a fantastic idea!

Not only did we get some ChristMary Beth mas baking done, the UCC kids were able to put a smile on the face of hard-working people who do their best to help people in our community all year long.

Kudos to Mrs. Kovacs and her students who baked and then delivered the treats.

I drove Brenna to the four groups we were delivering to, and it was so great to see the pleased responses first hand.

That same day, I was at Giant Tiger for a couple of hours manning the Salvation Army Red Kettle, part of my commitment as a Kiwanis member to help in the community. It truly was a fantastic experience.

From seeing cousins and friends I haven’t had time to catch up with, to seeing the incredible giving spirit of people who maybe couldn’t afford to give but did it anyway, I left the store feeling very good about the community I live in and the people I share it with.

I was thanked for standing there, wished a Merry Christmas, and chatted to about all kinds of things. I heard stories of people who give at every Red Kettle they see, even if it is just

a loonie or toonie, because they know every bit counts and there is always someone who needs it more.

The staff and the shoppers at Giant Corcoran Tiger really got me in the Christmas spirit, and it is always a reminder to slow down and enjoy the people in your life, giving them your time and attention while you still have the opportunity.

I am lucky enough to have a great family – both my blood relatives and my friends who are like family. In a few days, my sister, Jane is moving into a new place in town, and friends of ours from Lindsay, who have been in our lives for more than 30 years, are moving into Jane’s house. My brother lives in Chatham now as well, and I have cousins galore in the area whom I love to spend time

with.

I am feeling well and truly blessed this Christmas, including introducing Brenna’s boyfriend, Matt, to our family Christmas traditions. He’s either brave or really in love, as he has jumped in with both feet. Now let’s see if he can survive a big, noisy family Christmas Eve at my brother’s house this year.

Whatever this holiday season brings, I am grateful to family, friends, our incredible staff here at The Voice, and all our amazing readers who show us love all year long.

And, Janice Lally, no Christmas is complete without the amazing treats you drop off for us. Thanks again for the goodies and the warm and fuzzy feelings you bring us every year.

Interesting opportunities abound As Mary Beth mentioned in her column this week, very good friends of ours are moving to Chatham-Kent this week. Some of their stuff preceded them, and they actually had items in the home they are buying way before they were to move in.

That’s what happens when friends get together. My sisterin-law Jane is selling her home to friends Pete and Arlene. Given the lack of property inventory in C-K, it has worked out well for everyone.

Jane is moving into a smaller space with fewer responsibilities, while Pete and Arlene are sliding into a smaller home from what they had in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

As everyone is downsizing, we became the beneficiaries in several ways. Jane held an estate sale, but also sent clothes, furniture and even a snowblower our way pretty much just because we looked at the items.

All items are greatly appreciated. Our daughter, Brenna, is even eyeing up the snowblower. If she comes out and makes use of that when it’s time to shovel the driveway, I sure won’t complain. I’m sure my love of that new toy will wear off – eventually.

Speaking of new toys, Pete and Arlene had no need of a riding lawn mower anymore. They had about half an acre at their former home, and now have a city yard that has a pool in the backyard.

Knowing my hip issues, our buddies gave us the riding mower. It’s a compact Honda Hydrostatic.

It too has Brenna’s attention.

Where else in Ontario but Chatham-Kent can you fire up the lawn mower on a December day?

That’s what we did on the weekend, and Brenna was the first to take it for a spin. We have a lot of leaves still on the ground and she wants us to leave them to feed the lawn where possible rather than rake them. The shredding of the

Soggy cat

Most readers know Finn, our cat, is a character. They may not know he’s a cement head.

He HAS to go outside. It doesn’t matter if it’s pouring rain or snowing horizontally outside. To him, the outdoors means freedom.

Unfortunately, it apparently doesn’t mean freedom to use his brain.

When he wants in, the little guy will meow rather loudly at all our doors until someone answers. If it’s at night, he might try it once or twice before seeking shelter until we’re awake.

But he knows our schedules and how we’re up around 7 a.m. each morning, so he’ll stay put at a door and meow until we let him in.

The smart thing to do would be to whine at the front door, which is under a porch. Instead, he’ll meow at the back patio door, peering in to see if he can detect any signs of movement.

The problem is he’s exposed to the elements. So I’ve been letting a cold, wet cat into the house recently, the dumbass. I have to towel him off, paying extra attention to his dirty paws, before letting him have full access to the house.

You’d think he’d learn from one morning to the next. Nope. Heck, he doesn’t even learn hour to hour.

On Monday morning, after letting in Mr. Soggybottom at 6:45 a.m., he wanted out an hour later to go back out into the cold rain.

It’s days like that where you would think he’d want to sleep in front of the window and make funny faces at any of the animals that wander by in the rain. Instead, he’s one of the wandering wet ones.

I think he just likes making extra laundry for me to do with all the dirty towels.

CKHA honours its top staff The Chatham Voice

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) honoured staff, physicians and volunteers of the organization recently with the presentation of the Alliance Awards of Excellence and the Compassionate Caregiver Award of Distinction.

The Alliance Awards of Excellence are now in their 14th year, while the Compassionate Caregiver Award is now in its 11th year.

The Alliance Awards of Excellence recognize staff, physicians, volunteers and teams who exemplify performance excellence within and beyond the healthcare environment.

The Compassionate Caregiver Award of Distinction honours an individual or team who exemplifies Patient and Family Centred Care and works to advance quality of care while demonstrating unconditional compassion and respect.

Karen Millard earned the Compassionate Caregiver Award.

She has worked at CKHA as a registered nurse for more than 18 years.

In 2015, Millard joined the Palliative Care Unit where her compassionate and caring nature helps patients, families and staff on a daily basis.

With an ability to look past the illness and see the person, she makes patients and families feel

respected and heard during the emotional end-of-life conversations she encounters every day.

Her perceptive intuition puts patients and their families at ease as she provides support and meets them in the grieving process.
