Good family to Goodfellows Williston clan honoured for 450 years of combined service

An area family with four generations of service to Chatham Goodfellows and a long-time volunteer were honoured at the Chatham Goodfellows annual meeting recently.

The Williston family of Chatham was given a Lifetime Achievement Award and Connie Mardling was named Mrs. Goodfellow.

During the 1950s, Chatham Goodfellows’ modest budget of a few thousand dollars provided boxes of food and toys to approximately 200 families in Chatham. This year, the 63rd year of operation, the Chatham Goodfellows’ budget of well over $150,000 will provide boxes of food and toys for more than 1,400 families in Chatham, the former townships of Dover, Chatham Harwich, and Raleigh, as well as Merlin in partnership with Merlin Legion.

Power surge CKHA hydro bill rises 20% over the past five years

Not happy with your electricity bill? Imagine if you were a major power user such as the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

Over the past five years, the CKHA has seen its annual electricity costs rise by nearly a quarter of a million dollars, from just over $1.23 million in the 2012-13 fiscal year to nearly $1.48 million for the 2016-17 fiscal year that ended in March.

Jerome Quenneville, vice-president and chief financial officer for the alliance, said it could have been even worse.

“We’ve certainly put a lot into our energy management efforts. It’s helped to temper the impact a little bit,” he said.

“If we used it at the same rate as we used to, our increase would have been

even higher.”

Quenneville said changes in electricity management, as well as cogeneration – including the solar panels on the hospital rooftop – have helped.

“It takes planning to deal with such an inflationary impact. It certainly is a bit of a challenge to handle that kind of an increase in our basic service environment,” he said. “Maintaining the buildings and keeping the lights on is certainly something people expect.”

Quenneville said hospital management is always looking for savings and increases in efficiencies.

“Going forward, we are continuing to look at energy management strategies. We’re taking a good look at all possibilities,” he said.

District Hospital are not used the same way, allowing the alliance to save on some energy consumption.

Having a steady supply of electricity to the hospitals is crucial, Quenneville said, and he credits Entegrus with doing an excellent job.

“We depend on having a good utility service into our facilities. Everything from the CT scanner to nuclear cameras to our

computers rely on that good flow of electricity,” he said.

But when there is a power interruption, there are onsite generators to pick up the slack.

“You never know when that storm is going to hit and we’re going to have to switch to emergency power,” Quenneville said.

In 2016, the Chatham Goodfellows board of directors introduced the Lifetime Achievement Award to recognized individuals or organizations who provide no less than 25 years of continuous service, extraordinary philanthropy by an individual or organization, continues to encouraged the development of leadership among staff, colleagues or family, is an inspiration to others, displaying professionalism, a consistently positive and motivating attitude, and demonstrating ongoing respect for others, has inspired, shared and developed a vision for the future for development of philanthropy and is a good citizen that contributes to the well-being of the community.

Past-President Tim Mifflin announced the Williston family were given the Lifetime Achievement Award, with four generations packing the hall, led

by Mary and Phil Williston and their three kids, Cynthia, Scott and Craig.

The family commitment totaled 450 years.

In 58 years, the Williston family has fundraised, collected, packed and delivered food and toys for the less fortunate in Chatham-Kent.

Phil’s tireless work and dedication was recognized in 1988 when the Chatham Goodfellows bestowed Phil with the prestigious Mr. Goodfellow award. Phil provided leadership to the Chatham Goodfellows board of directors for more than five decades, and he served as president from 1998-2000.

Mary Williston recalled her first date with Phil in 1959 before Christmas.

Phil invited Mary to #1 Scout hut in Chatham to paint a red wagon so the wagon could be delivered to a child at Christmas. Mary said this is when the Williston legacy began with Chatham Goodfellows.

In 2004 Mary was the recipient of the Ms. Goodfellow Award.

“This community of practice carried through to Mary and Phil’s children, Cynthia, Scott, Craig and their extended family. The extended Williston family and all three children were active with Chatham Goodfellows through the years,” Mifflin noted.

While Cynthia no longer lives in Chatham-Kent, Scott and Craig, along with their seven children and eight grandchildren, carry on the Williston legacy. Williston family members have received more than 15 Chatham Goodfellows certificates of achievement over the past 39 years.

Scott replaced Phil as a member of the board in 2003, and from 2011-2016 Scott was the President of Chatham Goodfellows.

In 2015, he was the recipient of the Mr. Goodfellow Award. Scott remains an active board member managing food packing and delivery.

Craig was the recipient of the 2011 Mr. Goodfellow Award and in 2013 was invited to join the board. Craig manages the Porchlight Campaign.

“It is also with great humility that we accept this award. We just love doing it,” she said. “Who would have thought that paint-

Haskell described Mardling as a quiet but consistently cheerful and supportive presence for all

the Goodfellow events.

Mardling, who had no idea she would be honoured at the meeting, said she was shocked when her name was called. She credits her uncle, Marvin Merritt, for getting her involved while in elementary school.

“My Uncle Marvin called me and said they were short of delivery volunteers and asked me if I wanted to help.

I quickly said I would help and it just went from there,” Mardling said at the meeting. “I get the joy of helping others and I get pleasure out of that.”

Mardling, who books her holidays around the packing and delivery days, said she enjoys volunteering especially when kids in need are involved.

This year’s Mrs. Goodfellow said she felt there were so many other people that deserved the award.

“I don’t like to be in the limelight and I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for my uncle,” Mardling said.

Rees Foundation helps foot-care clinic Donates $8K to purchase autoclave

Thanks to a donation from the Howard J. Rees Foundation, a local foot care clinic will soon be running more efficiently, which is good news for area seniors.

The Foundation stepped up recently and donated approximately $8,000 to cover the purchase of an autoclave sterilizing unit for the clinics.

The Active Lifestyle Centre (ALC) took over running foot-care clinics on site when MHA Home Healthcare closed its Chatham offices earlier this year. The clinics are for seniors on low and fixed incomes and provide healthy maintenance of people’s feet.

As well, the ALC offers six diabetes foot-care clinics over the course of a year, teaming up with the Carlo Rossini Memorial Diabetes Foundation (CRMDF).

More than 2,000 people a year utilize the footcare clinics at the ALC, according to Linda Lucas, executive director.

The autoclave will save the ALC time and money, as the device uses high-pressure saturated steam to sterilize utensils and other equipment.

Currently, Lucas said the implements are hand sanitized, requiring time and chemicals. The heavy use of the cleaning chemicals also adds extra wear and tear on the implements.

With an autoclave, while there will still be some chemical usage, it will be greatly reduced, Lucas said. The automated process will also save a great deal of time.

She said the support from the Foundation is greatly appreciated.

“The fact we could get a piece of equipment like this is just amazing. This is hospital-grade,” Lucas said.

“The ALC needed to get an autoclave, but where were they going to get the money,” she asked.

“It’s going to be such a valuable tool.”

The funds from the Rees Foundation will cover the cost of the machine, as well as the price of start-up chemicals, Lucas said.

Rossini said Jan Mallory-Wood, a member of the CRMDF’s board, suggested approaching the Rees foundation.

Lucas said the Rees Foundation acted quickly once they found out about the request.

“It took less than three weeks to get a response to our request, and a cheque was on the way,” she said.

“Dr. Rees had a soft spot for seniors. It’s appropriate for his name to be hanging here,” Lucas said.

The plaque caught O’Brien by surprise.

“We weren’t expecting the foundation’s name to be hanging here, but

we’re very proud to see it.”

Lucas said the use of the foot-care clinics is on the rise. In the past year, the ALC went from hosting three clinics a month to four, and added the diabetic clinics as well.

“We could probably expand again,” she said.

News Downtown Deli to close

A downtown gathering place will close its doors later this month.

The Downtown Deli, owned and operated by Paul Shettell since 2009, will close Nov. 24.

“I was on a five-year-plan and it turned into an eight-year plan,” he joked about his time in the business. “It’s just time to retire from the food-service business.

It’s time to slow down. You’ve got to pick and choose.”

Shettell is also a licensed gas pipe fitter, and has continued to work in that industry over the years. He plans to continue part time once the deli closes.

Not only has the Downtown Deli served people for years from its location on King Street West near the Chatham Capitol Theatre, it has also regularly handled catering throughout the community. From 2012 until April of this year, Shettell also operated a satellite location at

St. Clair College.

The deli has its share of loyal customers, including a bevy of regulars who would meet and discuss the issues of the day.

It’s something Shettell said he’ll miss.

“We certainly liked it,” he said of his time at the deli. “Things would happen throughout the year that would make it the place to be.”

At its peak with two locations and the catering business operating, the deli employed about 10 people in full- and part-time capacities. Now, it’s down to just Shettell and Cindy Killen.

You can take Shettell out of the downtown, but you can’t take the downtown out of Shettell.

Despite closing his business in the downtown core, he will remain a part of the Historic Downtown Chatham BIA, serving as co-chair with Jim Carrington. Shettell said he’ll stay on, at least until his term is up in March of 2018.

Live local, give local What makes Chatham-Kent such a special place to live?

Sure, we’ve got some great beaches, some mild winters, and live in close proximity to the U.S. border for cultural or pro spots excursions, but it’s not all about the geography.

Actually, it’s much more about the people.

We’re talking about people like the Williston family. This clan of dedicated volunteers was honoured recently with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Chatham Goodfellows, the local organization that has, since 1954, worked to ensure that no child goes without a Christmas in Chatham and area.

And that Lifetime Achievement Award understates the Willistons’ commitment.

This is a family, albeit a large one, that has volunteered its services to the Goodfellows for a combined 450 years.

Family patriarch and matriarch Phil and Mary Williston have been involved in the organization since 1958. In fact, their first date was a jaunt to a local Scout hut to paint a red wagon, which was given to a child in need that Christmas.

Since then, they have been heavily involved. Both have earned the title Mr. or Mrs. Goodfellow over the years, as have two of their three children, Scott and Craig, who are members of the current board of directors. The third child, Cynthia, moved to Sarnia, but remains involved in the organization.

The Williston family commitment doesn’t end with the second generation. The children’s children are also volunteers. Ditto for members of the fourth generation.

Mary Williston said it was with great humility that the family accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award. We must say that if a family gives so much of its time to collectively volunteer for a cause – we’re talking a combined four and a half centuries of service here – its members don’t have to be humble about it.

But we’re talking about the Willistons after all.

They are collectively so committed to helping others through Goodfellows that it seems ingrained into their DNA. Of course, they aren’t the only giving family, and Chatham Goodfellows isn’t the only fortunate charity to have such dedicated support in Chatham-Kent.

Look no further than Connie Mardling, who was surprised to earn Mrs. Goodfellow honours this year. While heavily involved in this charity, she also reaches out to support other groups and events. If it helps local children in need, chances are she’ll jump at the chance to be involved.

These two examples stand out and were honoured for their efforts recently, but they are certainly not alone. We are blessed to live in such a giving community.

Council have egg on its face Sir: Chatham-Kent municipality is going to hell in a hand basket.

We, the people of Water Wells First, have been giving the alarm for some time, but the mayor and council will not do what they should; the right thing; yet they say they are with the people.

At the same time, they gave $8 million of our money to the wind company to go ahead and make our wells go bad.

They have the proof of what has gone on in Dover, but they don’t like to say that they are wrong and people with water well problems are right.

So what are they going to do now that the wells have gone bad?

You put Mr. Jakubec off as being dumb and stupid along with all the people of Water Wells First. The mayor and council have egg on their face that will be with them for their lives. The letter that Randy Hope said came from Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne – it must have got lost, but maybe when the work is done it will show up.

It is too bad you went to bed with the wind company. You should have known when you gave them the money that they had you on their side. If you had taken the money and really looked into the matter, you

would not have all the wells that have gone bad on your head. You can blame Kathleen Wynne but she was not the one that gave out the building permits.

Chatham doc gets accolades from peers

Chatham-Kent family physician Dr. Kate Bailey will be honoured this month as the 2017 Region 2 Family Physician of the Year by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

The announcement was made as part of Family Doctor Week in Canada, celebrated this year Nov. 6-11.

Hailing from Dresden, Bailey has been a family doctor for more than 30 years, and when asked about how she came to receive the honour, Bailey wasn’t sure how it happened.

“It was colleagues of mine that put my name up. I think it was a combination of things. I was quite surprised when I got this award,” Bailey said with a laugh.

“I’m a bit of an old-fashioned family doctor and I think that’s one of the reasons – I call it womb-to-tomb medicine. I deliver babies and look after people, I work at our local hospice and I’ve looked after a whole spectrum of age groups. I figured it out; I’ve looked after as many as five generations of some families,” she added.

As one of the few family doctors that takes pregnant patients, Bailey’s practice is unique.

“In the Province of Ontario, there aren’t a lot of family doctors that do obstetrics. My mentor was Dr. T. L. Walker and he was very much of the old school and we always did everything, so I do everything,” she said.

When you take care of patients from birth to death, you really get to know them

and their families, and really know your community, Bailey said.

“The more you know about someone, the more you can try and help them and know their background,” she noted.

Much has changed since she began her practice, with doctors moving into teams instead of separate offices, and technology has made a big difference, which she said can sometimes be a struggle for older doctors. Most family doctors do a lot less hospital work now, and she noted medicine has become much more complex.

There are plenty of medical students interested in family medicine, and being a mentor to those students is part of what Bailey does.

“I teach residents and also students at the Schulich School of Medicine, so part of that was teaching them about family practice and obstetrics because I do family practice and obstetrics so that was all part of being a mentor and teacher for medical students that have come through here,” Bailey said.

For the future, Bailey said she would like to see less money spent on drugs and tests and more money spent on quality of life, particularly for older people.

“I think there are lots of things as far as recreation and nutrition and emotional support where the money could be better spent,” she noted. “I know the money is limited, but I sometimes think a lot of money gets spent on technology and drugs and that’s not really improving the quality of care when you need it the most.”

Being part of a family health

team is also a big plus for Bailey, where there is more support for the doctors and for the patients, such as smoking cessation. She said lung disease and smoking are big issues in our area, so that program alone really stands out.

As far as advice for future doctors interested in family medicine, Bailey said it’s important to keep their scopes as broad as possible.

“I’ve been very fortunate; I’ve had very excellent residents. I think they have to think through what they want to have as a practice and a lifestyle. I’ve encouraged people to stay as general as possible, to get a practice and learn about a group of people and actually care for them forever,” she stated. “I appreciate that obstetrics is not something that many can or want to do as part of their practice, but to have a broad-based practice and be able to interact with their patients all the way and not have specialized boutiquey walk-in clinics. I just don’t think that’s good care for anybody. It’s expensive and poor care. If you’re going to be a family doctor, you need to care about the whole context of their life.”

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) acknowledges the outstanding contributions of Canadians family doctors and the highly valued relationships they have with their patients and the communities they serve.

This week also provides an opportunity for governments, health-care organizations, colleagues and the public to acknowledge the contributions made by family doctors to improve the health and well-being of their patients.

New route for Santa parade

This year’s Chatham Santa Claus parade will have a new starting point, but the same destination.

And in between, there is plenty of room for smiles and laughter from local families for the Nov. 17 parade.

Because of construction at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Lacroix Street, the parade will not begin at that intersection this year. Instead of having floats and other entries marshal along Sandys Street to the north of Grand Avenue, they will now gather along Thames and Dover streets from St. Clair Street back to Fifth Street.

The parade route is also somewhat abbreviated this year, heading across the Third Street Bridge and then down King

Street to the WISH Centre.

Paul Shettell, co-chair of the Historic Downtown Chatham BIA – the group putting on the parade this year – said the change was needed.

“It’s due to the Grand Avenue construction. It is supposed to be done by then (Nov. 17), but if we get inclement weather, it would be delayed. We played it safe and moved the starting location,” he said.

The marshaling area needs both streets due to the use of tractor-trailers, Shettell said.

All the large floats and transports will be on Dover and the walking groups and smaller floats will be on Thames,” he said.

The turn from Thames Street onto Third Street would be too tight for the large display vehicles.

Beneteau said the shorter route – removing Lacroix Street and a section of King Street West from the parade – will create larger crowds in the downtown core, but stressed the parade will be just as full for the spectators as usual.

“Everyone thinks it will be a short parade because of the route. It’s only 1.5 kilometres long, but if we have 80 floats, it will still be a 90-minute parade,” she said.

Shettell said the route change works well for the downtown merchants.

“From the BIA’s perspective, we’re putting everyone down on King Street, so it works well for us.”

The parade is also starting later than it has in the past. The evening event begins at 6:30 p.m., to make room for the Flaunt Your Flannel, Santa Edition, run at 6 p.m. down King Street organized by the Maple City Mile club.

“They’ll be finishing up when we pull out,” Shettell said.

“We’re encouraging people to come out early to watch the run and stay for the parade.”

Downtown coffee shop Cup of Joe is giving away free hot chocolate the night of the parade to help keep folks warm.

As well, the Chatham Goodfellows and the Salvation Army will be collecting canned goods.

Torbram Electric volunteers will be collecting stuffed animals for children of families in need.

Children are asked to bring their letters to Santa with them to the parade as well, as Canada Post volunteers will be on hand to collect them and make sure they get to the North Pole.

Committee members sought The Chatham Voice

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is seeking five individuals to serve on its newly revamped Property Standards Committee and has extended the deadline for applications to this Friday, Nov. 10.

The committee meets on an as-needed basis to hear ap-

peals made by citizens who received orders to comply with the property standards bylaw.

In May of this year, Chatham-Kent council voted to alter the committee structure to reflect the trend across Ontario in which such committees are comprised of citizens rather than council members.

Committee members receive

a $50-per-meeting remuneration fee as well as mileage from their place of residence to the meetings, which are held at the Civic Centre in Chatham.

Residents are invited to submit an application by visiting the municipal website. Applicants may also provide a bio/ resume highlighting relevant experience and qualifications.

There’s no denying that a home inspection can be a valuable part of the buying process. By attending the inspection and reading the report thoroughly, you can ensure that you’re making the most of it.

Poppins coming to the stage The Chatham Voice

Theatre Kent is presenting the family musical Mary Poppins at the Kiwanis Theatre in Chatham at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 to 18, with a special 1:30 p.m. matinee on Nov. 16.

The Disney/Cameron Mackintosh production

features musical favourites such as Supercallifragiliciousexpialidocioius, Step In Time and Feed The Birds, and a level of choreography rarely seen in community theatre.

Director Tim Luimes said the show’s underlying message “is the importance of family and

relationships, but it presents the music in a delightful and magical tour of imagination.”

He added that, “the musical fun keeps going with hardly a break!”

Christine Baribeau, who directs musicals at Chatham-Kent Secondary School, is playing the ti-

tle role and she said appearing onstage as Mary Poppins is a dream come true.

“I actually had the costume already!” she said.

The show tells the story of a unique nanny who arrives at the stuffy English home of the Banks family. Children Michael

(Corson Fraleigh) and Jane (Klare Rumble) have chased out a few nannies already, but Mary Poppins will not be deterred by their childish pranks.

Tim O’Malley is playing Bert, the dancing chimney sweep and jackof-all-trades, who sets his cap for the eccentric

Mary Poppins.

Also featured in the show are Samantha DeGroot as Winnifred Banks, Josh Norg as George Banks, as well as the show’s choreographer Britt DeJoseph, who appears in several roles.

Auction events offer NEW higher-end items for sale

When a donation is made to Bibles for Missions in Chatham, you can rest assured every penny they make selling goes to worthy local projects and others around the world.

Pat Alton, a long-time volunteer at Bibles for Missions, said it takes 150 volunteers working under a board of directors to keep the Chatham store going, and they are a dedicated bunch.

“We’re all here because we want to be and that’s what makes it so enjoyable,” said Alton.

Set up like a department store, Alton said the busy outlet is divided into departments, such as shoes, clothes, books, furniture, antiques, household items and a special shelf for collectibles.

But what makes Bibles for Missions unique in this area is that they will take broken furniture and electronics.

For instance, any jewelry that comes in goes to volunteer Marjorie Hall in her cubby, where she sorts and cleans it, tagging anything that is gold, silver or jeweled for the eight or so auctions the store hosts every year with higher quality donations.

“The nicer pieces, we save for our auction and for this time of year for Christmas gifts,” Alton explained.

Then there’s Doug Brohm, the resident keeper of the book department, who takes the book donations and makes sure only the nicest copies make it on to the floor.

“Doug has book sale every month, usually for half price,” Alton added.

You can see each area with a volunteer or two who fix electronics such as TVs and computers, repair and refinish furniture like tables and desks, and an area to fix and clean appliances like fridges and stoves.

A couple of volunteers are also in charge of sorting just about everything else, like housewares, collectibles, paintings and other more unusual items.

That leaves the boxes and boxes of Christmas decorations that the volunteers are currently going through and putting out on the floor, many of the items for 50 cents or a $1.

Alton said Bibles for Missions lets nothing go to waste and anything they can’t use is recycled.

“We throw nothing out. If it’s salvageable, we sell it; if not, we recycle it,” she noted. “You can come in and buy good stuff here. We serve the community here who can’t buy good stuff usually.”

A popular event at the Chatham store are the auctions that usually happen about eight times a year, Alton said, depending on the high-quality items that come in. She said

jewelry is a big draw, but they also have Royal Dalton figurines, Nippon china, Depression glass, Bunnykins dishes, fur coats and antique items such as Tiffany lamps and clocks.

The auction items are put on display in locked cabinets and numbered and people can sign up and bid on items until auction day, then it goes live. Alton said she has usually about 100 items, but the upcoming auction Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. has 150 items and about 250-300 people signed up.

The store has been open in Chatham for the past 25 years and despite adding on a large warehouse to the property, Bibles for Missions could use more storage space for the piles of donations that come in.

Alton said the store is always busy and they are constantly trying to get new items on the floor for people. She said the good prices compared to other thrift stores and the high qual-

ity of items they get from generous donors and the fact they don’t have to pay staff make Bibles for Missions very popular.

“All the money we get goes to buy bibles for missions, which used to be entirely foreign missions, but we also build schools and churches and do outreach in Canada as well,” Alton explained.

Bibles for Missions is located at 26 Wellington St. W., right by the railroad tracks. Pick up of items (not heavy items) can be scheduled, and delivery is available for a fee.

Improvements made along Erie Shore Dr. The Chatham Voice

Chatham-Kent Works Public Department staff are completing a number of measures designed to mitigate recent flooding caused by high winds along Erie Shore Drive.

Tim Dick, Director of Drainage, Asset and Waste Management for the municipality, said the work involves directing the water to particular areas along the roadway to enable it to drain more safely and quickly.

More than 100 concrete blocks have been placed along the road to direct water to control points of safe entry leading to

the Burke Drain. As well, stone erosion protection on the Burke Drain on the north side of the road was installed to prevent the flows from eroding the top of the slope and to maintain the bank and roadway.

A thickness of asphalt has been milled (ground off) to direct water from the south side of the road in conjunction with the other features mentioned above.

Dick said the work was be completed Oct. 31.

“Obviously we can’t control the lake level or the wind but this work will help the water that accumulates to drain away,” he said.

The Chatham-Kent Professional Firefighters Association (CKPFFA) with support from Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services are partnering with several local businesses to promote men’s health and the fight against prostate cancer.

“A moustache is a fun way to cause some sort of commotion and inquiring questions. These conversations open the door to

explain what Movember is all about and raise critical funds,” said campaign co-chairman Jon Benoit in a media release. “It is also a reminder to friends and family the importance of taking action early when a health issue arises.”

The CKPFFA will be volunteering at local stores every weekend in November, helping customers carry out their purchases, selling T-shirts ($20) and collecting donations.

A soldier’s perspective Editor’s note: Maj. Edward Francis Carron of Pain Court wrote this piece while still a lieutenant, and his family wanted to share it with the community as we remember the sacrifices of Canadian men and women during war time.

When his Regiment invaded Sicily during the Second World War, Carron was captured at Regalbuto and was later asked to write a piece about his experience.

According to family, the fight where he was captured was recorded in a book called Operation Husky.

(Written in October 1946) This an attempt to portray to the readers some of the various experiences of an escaped POW. At the time of the invasion of Sicily, the writer was Pl. Sgt. (Platoon Sergeant) of 9th Platoon, “A” Company, then commanded by Capt. (now Major) R. G. Liddell, MBE. “Later the afternoon of 1 Aug 1943, the Germans had counter-attacked the “Hampshires,” (a battalion of the 23 Malta Brigade which was an independent Imperial Brigade working with us), and had driven them back some distance, retaining

we were to have a warm welcome.

The Company Comd. (commander) after determining where the fire was coming from sent a platoon around in a left flanking movement to silence the tank gun.

As we started off, we heard the Company Comd. fire at some characters, however as we

picked our way through and up to the cliff, the firing slackened off somewhat. The Pl. Sgt. was leading the point section, and after scaling the cliff we found ourselves in a position to assault the high feature which had a small tower affair on the summit.

At this point we came under fire from 2 Brens

(Bren light machine guns) from our right flank! At the moment we roundly cursed our sister platoon for firing on us; however, later we found that the fire had come from captured weapons.

We assaulted the hill, took the little tower and had the feature. Now if all had gone well, the other companies would

have moved through us to strengthen and consolidate our position.

However, the tank was still firing on the other platoons of the company, so something had to be done quickly.

The Pl. Comd. knowing that speed was essential took two sections and went after the tank.

Pl. Sgt. with 1 section went about clearing the position. It should be mentioned here that as all things take time, it was very close to first light by now. After the initial surprise, the Germans started to feel out our positions and apparently were fully aware of our low numbers.

At dawn down came the 25’s ranging I believe on the tower.

The Pl. Comd’s runner, coming back to tell the Sgt. to fall back, was captured. First light came with an isolated section of 9th Platoon far forward of any support. With light we saw that the town was occupied in strength, on our right were dug in tanks hull down on the reverse slope, on the left a “42” (MG-42 German machine gun) started to make things uncomfortably warm. About this time the Pl. Sgt. made a quick dash into the tower and climbing up the circular staircase for a good O.P. (observation post) – a round of A.P. (armour piercing) coming through the tower from a dug-in tank however made it not the ideal spot to tarry.

Rejoining the section the Pl. Sgt. found that his Bren group had been over-run and by now the remainder of the section was completely cut off and Jerry, with the odd pasting of our own 25’s to help out, made the situation appear rather dark brown, and finally, with no help forthcoming, and his tanks, captured Brens and 2 M.G. 42’s to support him, Jerry over-ran our position and we

found ourselves P.O.W. (prisoners of war) We were quickly taken well back and bundled into a P.O.W. cage.

Here we were fortunate enough to get treatment for our three wounded men and get them taken off to hospital. Later one of these Grigas (Distinguished Conduct Medal – the Bren gunner) and a chap Rocke (who was sent back about the same time with a bad case of dysentery) managed to escape and made their way back through the British lines.

Shortly after we were machine-gunned by our own planes and a Britisher and two Americans were killed.

In Messina, during the confusion by another air attack, we managed to escape, but we were recaptured shortly after, taking a wounded companion into a first aid station.

Our next stop was Capua (P.G. 66) where we escaped again – getting clear for two days before recapture.

Again, we managed to give them the slip while being marched through the streets of Capri to P.G. 73; but the foolish behaviour of our fellow P.O.W. led to our recapture as we were no match for the Germans in our weakened condition. Here it might be mentioned that our rations left a great deal to be desired; my own weight having dropped from 210 to 164.

However, our mistakes had taught us that we must make more through preparations for our next break to ensure a clean get-away.

Escape: A soldier’s story

The following night while en route to Germany in freight cars, we decided to try again.

A few handfuls of pebbles in the toe of a army sock makes a very effective cosh (bludgeon); so with the guard out of the way, we had only to kick the barbed wire from the ventilator, wait for complete darkness, get around the outside guard and jump. Again, we had forgotten one factor, the speed of the train! My companion was stunned landing, however, with luck I dragged him clear of the track.

Getting our bearings, we found that we were on the edge of an airfield. Here unguarded we found five planes; with nothing but a crude knife we sabotaged them so they would crash in flight. This was rather easy with the three which had a stressed fabric covering. However, the transports were more difficult.

As it not long before day break we were soon on our way; luck seemed to be with us for we got clear without mishap.

From our previous attempts we knew that is was essential to get into civilian clothing as soon as possible to cross the Po (River) with any hope of success.

Later we again made our way north, into the foot-hills of the Alps. Passing through such small towns as St. Pedro and Capo de Ponte, we made our way to the Pass D’Apligar which was the only unguarded spot at which we could cross the Alps successfully.

During this time, it was necessary to travel during the hours of daylight as the country was under curfew and the Germans permitted no civilian movement at night.

Finally, when only a few miles from the Swiss border we waited for a foggy night and crossed without too much trouble.

In Switzerland, we were called Internees but were allowed all privileges of the Swiss Army and certainly not kept under custody or anything of that nature.

We were organized much as a large detached unit with officers, NCOs and men from every country in the Empire. We, of course, were allowed no military training, but got around that by calling a route march an organized walk, or a stipulated place of parade a rendezvous, etc.

With the landing in Normandy and the American landings south, some of us made our way through Belfort area, thence with Americans to Marseilles. From there by Lyons, Paris, we soon found our way back to the UK.

(Camp 73). On 14 September 1943 he and other non-commissioned officer slipped away from the column of prisoners being marched to the station for entrainment for Germany.

However, the foolish behavior of the other prisoners led to their immediate recapture.

Thereafter they were closely watched until they boarded the train. After breaking the barbed wire covering the small ventila-

He soon rejoined his friends and the three men walked to Switzerland, finally crossing the frontier on 25 September, 1943. It was mainly through the efforts of Sgt. Carron, who incidentally knew no Italian, that food was secured during the journey.
