The sky was buzzing at the Chatham Municipal Airport last week as aircraft hobbyists launched their model aircrafts into the sky at the 10th annual ThunderThrust event Sept. 17. Not your typical models, these aircraft are able to achieve speeds of more than 200 km/h. Preparing for a practice flight are Mike Stephenson, owner of a PC 21 Turboprop, with help from George Stalk and Pete Doupnik, organizer of the event.

ThunderThrust is the last event at the airport for the 2022 year, capping a successful and busy season.

Tilbury ‘appealed’ to United Industries

United Industries brass released more details about their planned expansion into Canada – specifically into the former site of Woodbridge Foam in Tilbury – during a media conference call Sept. 13.

United is a world leader in precision-engineered stainless steel tubing.

The firm hopes to employ upwards of 100 people at their Tilbury location, which is United’s first foray into Canada.

United has taken over the Woodbridge facility

on Queen Street North.

Greg Sturicz, president of United Industries, said the company has no plans on going anywhere any time soon, as it has signed a 30-year lease.

“What we do is not something we can get in and out easily. Once this equipment is in there, it’s going to stay there for a long time,” he said.

Sturicz said salaries and hourly rates for employees have not yet been finalized.

“We’re doing a lot of research on what our full needs will be. We will do a thorough analysis on what the wage ranges are

for those positions and we’ll be prepared to offer comparable wages,” he said.

Expansion into Canada has been a goal for United for years, Sturicz said. It facilitates access to other steel supply lines, as well as exporting to other markets.

Sturicz and Jim Hoyt, who headed up the site selection process with United, said the search for a viable facility began in Windsor and expanded from there. Once they reached Tilbury, they knew they had found the perfect spot.

“We were fortunate that we found the facility we did. It’s quite large and we have some room to keep growing on site,” Sturicz said. “We liked everything about it. It’s accessible, not out in the boonies. It’s nicely located with ready access for shipping, including via rail.”

“We spent a lot of time looking at properties. It was pretty fortunate we did find this place in Tilbury. We didn’t know a lot about the area. We reached out to Jamie and we really got a thorough understanding what the community is about, what the work force is about and it really appealed to

us,” he said.

Rainbird said he’s excited about what this will mean to Tilbury and area.

“They (United) made it clear from the very first meeting that they want to be an employer of choice.

That’s something I don’t forget,” he said.

“For our operation to work, we need tool and dye shops, welding shops, sheet metal shops, all kinds of support industries for us to use and really partner with,” he said.

“We really can’t afford a lot of downtime. We’re looking for suppliers we can reach out to and get immediate responses from.”

Taxed clippings Couple charged for grass cutting on property they help to maintain

Chatham resident Paul Bowman is a man who prides himself on paying his bills.

But he recently received one from the municipality for $369.06 that he has no intention of paying.

Sent out by the tax department July 27, the bill is for grass cutting on a vacant lot off Detroit Drive that Bowman and his wife, Lynn, own, along with six other residents.

He said attempts to resolve the issue have gone unanswered and he’s frustrated.

“I’m confused,” Bowman told The Voice last week.

“The municipality is dragging their heels on this.”

The Union Gas retiree, who has lived on the street since 2007, has been sharing the grass-cutting du-

ties on the 70-foot-by-200foot lot with neighbour Ross Moore for the past 15 years.

The lot is part of a vacant area located in the Mud Creek floodplain.

Bowman said he’s been told there are at least four other lots located in the empty green space that he believes are owned by the adjacent Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The lot, that’s jointly owned by the Detroit Drive residents, used to house a communal septic system that serviced the homes, but Bowman said the system was no longer used after residents hooked up to sanitary sewers in 2012.

Brown explained that under the Municipal Freedom of Information Protection and Privacy Act he’s not allowed to know the identities of property owners as they relate to bylaw issues.

But he said his department is willing to look at the Detroit Drive case.

“If the owner contacts me, I’ll review if the process was followed,” Brown said, adding that if there’s is a discrepancy the owner can appeal the decision.

The grass trouble started earlier this year when the municipal grass cutting got behind because of contractor issues. The municipality was forced to put out requests for proposals and bring on new contractors.

In the meantime, the spring grass grew like wildlife, leading to unsightly areas that prompted a slew of complaints to the municipality. Many

Chatham-Kent residents were especially angry that grass was out of control in local cemeteries.

According to Bowman, the grass in the vacant lots adjacent to the Detroit Drive homeowner’s lot was about two-and-a-half feet high.

But the lot he helps cut was kept trimmed throughout.

That’s why he can’t understand why he’s getting a bill.

“We have someone who saw that the municipality’s contractor did not do

anything to our lot,” Bowman added. “They didn’t even go on it (the lot).”

Bowman said he and his neighbours hope the issue can be settled.

“We own the property and we take care of it ourselves,” Bowman added.

“We shouldn’t be getting a bill.”

South Kent Coun. Anthony Ceccacci said he had second-hand information about the Detroit Drive grass cutting and he’s willing to help if the affected property owner reaches out to him.

Mayor Darrin Canniff said the municipality is “extremely lucky” to have Duben, adding the veteran municipal leader is well respected in the municipal sector.

“He’s certainly the person to lead us to a whole new level,” Canniff said, adding he support’s Duben’s vision to make the municipality “an employer

Duben is replacing former CAO Don Shropshire who retired from the position late last year. However, Shropshire has continued to assist with the Wheatley disaster.

Duben has purchased a home in Chatham and will be moving here later this fall.

Why are you running?

I am running for re-election for Chatham-Kent council because I believe in our community and its future. I want my children to love living in Chatham-Kent, and my parents to be able to grow old here. I am proud of some of the collective achievements made last term, but believe there is more work to be done.

What are the key issues?

Infrastructure is the largest issue for Chatham-Kent. I learned very quickly last term that CK council has to balance new investments with the operating and asset management costs of the infra-

structure we h a v e already.

Finally, community well-being is an issue in CK. By well-being, I mean health, housing, and the ability of people to achieve their goals.

What do you hope to achieve if elected?

If elected for council, I have goals for my local ward, and goals for our

community overall. Locally, the recovery and rebuilding of Wheatley is on the top of my list of things to achieve. Overall in CK, I would like to see improved opportunities for active transportation and access to green spaces and waterways, and increased investments in the important infrastructure needed for our communities to grow and thrive as an epicentre for agriculture.

What skills and experience do you bring?

I believe that my work and education are “just the right mix” for being a local councillor. As someone who studied political science in university, I understand policy and process.

Why are you running?

I am running to give Ward 1 a fair representation of rural issues in Chatham Kent. If elected, I aim to be both an accessible councillor and to work with the other councillors in raising the profile of rural C-K. What are the key issues?

Infrastructure and its investment are large issues facing Chatham-Kent, being so large it seems much investment is focused on Chatham while the outlying towns are left to fight for themselves for funding or maintaining services.

What do you hope to achieve if elected?

I would fight to maintain

existing rural services and for better rural infrastructure to David Serednicki enable t h e growth of our small towns. Rural bridges and roads, while a complicated issue, I believe should have more investment to support farmers in what they do and where a significant part of C-K lives.

What skills and experience do you bring?

I feel honoured to be connected to many in the area, be it in farming, manufacturing or just socially around the

small towns, having lived in Tilbury and area for a large part of my life. I’ve lived and worked for some time in both Wheatley and Chatham as well.

My best experience to offer would be my reservist career with the Canadian Forces as a Cadet Instructor Cadre Officer. It has taught me much about conflict resolution, networking and how to accomplish a task no matter how difficult it may seem.

It’s very rewarding for both professional development and in assisting local youth to be better people.

I am also involved with RCL Br. 206 in Tilbury as an ordinary member, and am the chairman of the Stoney Point Sportsmen’s Club.

Opinion Editor’s note: Due to the number of letters to the editor recently submitted by our readers, we have opted to forgoe providing an opinion of our own this week in favour of showcasing yours.

God save the king Editor: In the next year or so, I will get to watch my second British coronation. Being a part of the “Silent Generation” which preceded the Baby Boomers, I recall watching the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. At our end of the street on which I grew up, there was one family that possessed a TV, an incredible luxury in those days. I was invited by a friend to join him and his parents to watch with them.

The TV was a huge wooden box about 30

inches wide, about 24 inches high and about 24 inches deep, with a screen approximately 10 inches across. Instead of pure black and white, the screen had a slight greenish tinge to it.

I was in the fourth grade at McKeough School at the time, and our teacher – Miss Miller – made a considerable fuss over the coronation and the fact that after years of kings, we now had a queen.

Each student was given a

commemorative bone china plate with the new queen’s image on it, which I still have to this day.

Now we have a new king, and I can revert to singing the version of the British national anthem that I first learned as a child. Thankfully, unlike other anthems, it has not been rewritten multiple times to make it more “woke.”

Editor: On a recent Sunday while attending Mass at St Joseph’s here in Chatham, I found myself experiencing medical distress.

I was almost immediately attended to by some of my fellow parishioners who called the paramedics and the EMS unit to come to my aid. They took great care looking after me until help arrived.

The paramedics and the EMS crews made me feel calm and confident that

I was in good hands and I was taken to the trauma section of the ER at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

There I was treated for my condition, tested and monitored for four hours by the amazing staff of nurses and doctor, with a positive outcome.

With all of the negative news about people not wanting to help others and the negativity health care is getting, I felt that

I had to share how I am very impressed and thankful for the treatment that I experienced from everyone.

So here is a big thank you to he parishioners who initially looked after me, the paramedics, and the nurses and doctor in the ER at CKHA. You are the best of the best.

It has been an honour to serve the municipality for the last four years on council. I believe I have shown it is important to not only be a councilor but to be active in our community and to give back, helping out whenever possible. To lead by example and promote our community and all that

it has to offer.

The cost of living has increased drastically the last couple of years. There are many residents and families struggling and some are on the verge of homelessness and poverty. The mental health and the drug situation with people

young and older are also challenges in communities everywhere.

We also face challenges with getting more support from higher levels of government for our infrastructure, our eroding shorelines, etc.

What do you hope to achieve if elected?

Working together as a whole to do things to protect our environment.

Support lobbying higher levels of government for more help in maintaining and improving our infrastructure, Promote positive things happening in our community and all that we have to offer.

Why are you running?

I’m running for council because our communities and neighbourhoods continue to need a voice at council that recognizes their individual needs, desires and identities. I also want to see a number of issues that were started over the last term completed.

What are the key issues?

Imagine CK is clearly the issue that’s on the top of everybody’s mind, Talbot Trail closure, Erie Shore Drive continue to be difficult situations, as does Wheatley. There’s also the larger issue of the broader economy, inflation and a potential recession. We need to make sure we’re prepared for

a slowdown.

What do you hope to achieve if elected?

I ’ v e Trevor Thompson learned that as a municipal representative, it’s not about what I want to achieve, it’s about what the community wants, and the cards we’re dealt. I’m proud of our accomplishments over the last four years, but nobody could have foreseen what transpired. Ultimately I want to represent Ward 2 to the best of my abilities.

Don Jacobs recalls exactly where he was when

Queen Elizabeth was officially crowned back on June 2, 1953 – in school.

The retired farmer who now lives in Chatham said he was in Grade 2 at

SS No. 4 in Raleigh Twp. At the young age of eight, Jacobs received a

commemorative coin to mark the occasion, something he proudly still has today. He said all the kids in the school received such a coin.

Jacobs said SS No. 4 was a classic one-room school with grades 1-8 all in the one room. His teacher at

the time, Mr. Tracy, taught all subjects to all the different grades as well.

Queen Elizabeth II took over the throne after her father, King George VI, passed away on Feb. 6, 1952.

The queen died Sept. 8 at the age of 96.

Why are you running?

To continue to bring South Kent constituent voices to the council table regarding everyday issues that affect them. I would also like the continued opportunity to represent Chatham-Kent and work cohesively on bi-national and regional organizations such as the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Cities Initiative (GLSLCI), as Canadian vice-chair of the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Shoreline Resilience and as co-chair of the Thames River Phosphorus Reduction Collaborative(TRPRC) respectfully.

What are the key issues?

Large geographic area with a limited residential tax base who are already struggling to make ends meet with everyday rising costs and inflation.

Lack of alternate financial resources to effectively upgrade/improve the resilience of older infrastructure and/or to build/maintain new infrastructure for anticipated growth.

Lack of affordable housing options for young adults/families to rent or purchase and for older adults who wish to downsize.

Limited systemic harm reduction resources and few supportive housing options to effectively meet addiction and/or substance abuse challenges in our community.

I have acquired an extensive network of resources regarding sustainable nature-based adaptive strategies/interventions that could be considered when making decisions regarding our ongoing infrastructure challenges.

I am approachable, respectful and collaborative. I am open to new ideas with consideration for all opinions and will consistently take a common sense approach.

Why are you running?

I found myself wanting to give more and do more for the people of Chatham-Kent. I have lived in Chatham-Kent my entire life, and most of those years have been spent in South-Kent. I want to ensure that all small communities within the municipality, more specifically those within Ward 2, don’t lose their identity.

What are the key issues?

We have a huge shortage of affordable housing and many residents are on the brink of being homeless. I feel that we can do better by rehabilitating and providing resources.

We need to have a better solution for all the stolen property, vandalism and theft within our municipality.

Population growth is outpacing the growth of industry, infrastructure, essential and emergency services.

I would also like to see more industry growth of good paying jobs to help balance the employment and housing needs of cur-

rent and n e w r e s i dents.

I feel there is a disconnect Mike Walker b e tween the rural areas and the “City” of Chatham. I want to work hard to find unity for all of C-K and to facilitate change.

I also think that all rural areas must have highspeed Internet.

To serve and get real results and not empty promises for all residents of Ward 2. Work with other councillors to unify Chatham-Kent and make our municipality a place that people want to live in and invest in.

Throughout my career I’ve always been the goto guy, I’ve always been looked at as a leader. I understand and respect timelines and I’ve always been a good communicator.

Chatham-Kent, like many waterfront communities, faces very challenging and difficult decisions regarding erosion. The costs of addressing these issues are simply not obtainable without the assistance of upper levels of government. We need to continue to advocate for additional funds.

Why are you running?

Now that I am married and have started a family, I want to help shape the future of Chatham-Kent, and I feel like it is time to take that next step. We need more young people on council in order to get a better overall view of the community, as well as some new ideas. We need people that are not going to be afraid of confrontation and are ready to ask the tough questions when they need to be asked.

What are the key issues?

• Tax dollars not being used efficiently.

• Not enough community involvement before major decisions have been made.

• Lack of good facilities and activities for young families to take advantage of.

• Better maintenance of gravel rural roads and upgrading more to tar and chip.

• Supporting our farmers’ rights to do what they choose with their land, while incentivizing

a significant increase in housing concerns with our most vulnerable; these issues are only magnifying, and solutions are required immediately, as temporary emergency shelters are not a viable response to addressing these issues. Additional concerns are the continued downloading by the province to our community which requires dedicated leadership.

Capitol releases ’22-’23 schedule The Chatham Voice

Classic Canadian entertainers, international voices and comedy are on the menu for the Chatham Capitol Theatre in the coming months.

The theatre released its fall and winter schedule recently, with the likes of Randy Bachman, Jann Arden, Lawrence Gowan, the Irish Rovers and Colin Mochrie on the schedule.

After an extended intermission due to the COVID pandemic, the Capitol will hold its first “Capitol Presents” season in three years.

The season kicks off Oct. 3 with a one-night only performance by The Tenors.

Canada’s Mark Masri and Sicily’s Alberto Urso have recently joined Clifton Murray and Victor Micallef to form a

brand-new quartet.

Other events include: Oct. 12: The Mush Hole, a story of Canada’s first Indian Residential school, the Mohawk Institute, and honours the resilience, courage, and strength of residential-school survivors.

Nov. 25: Canadian rock legend Gowan performs.

Jan. 27: Multi-platinum award-winning singer, songwriter, actress and author Jann Arden takes the stage.

Rossini’s changing hands The Chatham Voice

After 19 years of running Rossini’s Restaurant, Ed and Berta Prelaz are set to retire.

The couple reported recently on social media that at the end of October, a new owner will take over the restaurant at that time.

“Thank you again, Chatham-Kent, for your loyal patronage and support of our small business,” the couple said on the Rossini Facebook page. “We will miss you just as much as you will miss us!”

The Prelazs said they look forward to travelling, playing golf, and spending more time with family and friends, as well as “not working 50 out of 52 Saturdays a year.”

Details about the new owners will be shared as soon as they become available.

The Prelazs took over Rossini’s in 2003. It was founded in 1948 by Carlo and Amalia Rossini.

Amalia, “Mamma” Rossini passed away in January 1995. Bill and Jean Rossini continued to run the family operation using her original recipes.

Ed, Berta and Devon Prelaz purchased the restaurant 18 years later.

John Wilken

Peacefully at Tilbury Manor Nursing Home, on Sunday September 11, 2022, Johannes “John” Bernard Wilken, age 90, beloved husband of the late Margaret (Vandenberg) Wilken (1990). Born in Holland in 1932, son of the late Anna (Lucasen) and Hendrick Wilken. Loving father of Mary Faubert, Rick Wilken, Tom (Doris) Wilken and Theresa (Arthur) Matthews. Dearest grandfather of 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Dear brother of Rita Burm and Conrad (Bonnie) Wilken. He will also be sadly missed by daughter-in-law Deb Wilken and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his son Henry Wilken, sisters Helena Wilken, Elizabeth (Martin) VanDeHogen, Annie (Peter) Gielen and brother-in-law Theo Burm. John worked for many years with CSX Railway until his retirement. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday September 17, 2022 at 10 AM in St. Ursula’s Church. Burial will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery. The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Tilbury Manor. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
