Pipeline expansion in C-K
Construction work has officially begun on two new natural gas transmission pipelines in Chatham-Kent. Bill Walker, Associate Minister of Energy, announced the work has begun at a press conference last week near Dresden. “By expanding access to natural gas, our government is helping make life more affordable for businesses and families in Chatham-Kent,” Walker said in a media release. “Expanding natural gas access will help make
Chatham-Kent more attractive for job creation and new business growth.” The Chatham-Kent project, developed by Enbridge Gas, will benefit from up to $8 million in eligible funding to expand natural gas access primarily to meet the demands of the growing local greenhouse sector. The municipality estimates the additional natural gas capacity could create up to 1,400 new jobs in the greenhouse industry alone. The average household in Chatham-Kent could
also save up to $2,200 per year in energy costs as they switch from costlier fuel sources. The pipelines are expected to be in service as early as the end of 2019. “This will lead to cheaper home heating costs for families and more investment by businesses,” said Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton. “That’s a double win for the region. I’m proud of our government for initiating this project.” “The construction of this new natural gas line in Chatham-Kent is vital because it allows for the
immediate development and expansion of businesses in our community. The work we are doing today ensures future generations of Chatham-Kent residents will have access to important job-making infrastructure,” said C-K Mayor Darrin Canniff. “I commend everyone involved including the province, Enbridge, and our Chatham-Kent Economic Development team for working together to form a strong partnership that once again proves that our municipality is here for business.”

Weese said it launched Sept. 1 and the draw will take place Oct. 11. “This is something that has become quite popular. People don’t mind dropping 20 bucks for a chance to win money,” she said, acknowledging the recent successes of 50/50 draws for the health alliance and Big Brothers Big Sisters. “Our goal is $40,000. We’re hoping to exceed that to add to the regular campaign.” The campaign kicked off this

Detroit theme for FireFest

Brent DeNure gets by with a little help from his friends. That’s the case this year for the co-chair of FireFest, who just a year ago said the event was done after he became fatigued from dealing with municipal red tape. But after working things out with the municipality, something he said was made possible by Mayor Darrin Canniff, DeNure was encouraged to change his mind and keep the popular event running. DeNure, who normally plans well in advance, had little thought out for FireFest 2019, however. Enter friends from across the Ambassador Bridge. “Usually with FireFest, I do about a 15-month plan out, so I have got a good idea of Year Two before we even do Year One. With what happened, I didn’t have the luxury of time I usually have,” he said. “But I do have friends. I’m very fortunate to have a lot of friends with the Detroit Fire Department (DFD). Consequently, there is a big Detroit flavour this year.” On Sept. 21, Chatham’s downtown will have more than 100 antique fire trucks on display, with a number of them from Detroit. DeNure said that includes the department’s memorial rig, a 1937 Seagrave Safety Sedan that is used to take fallen firefighters to their final resting place. “This will be the first time it’s ever been shown
outside the U.S.,” DeNure said. Also on display will be a 1927 Packard ambulance, the first ambulance used by the DFD. DeNure said it has undergone extensive museum-quality restoration. It will be part of a display of ambulances at FireFest that will show the evolution of the emergency services vehicle. DeNure credited TekSavvy and Waste Connections Canada as key sponsors that gave organizers the ability to put together this year’s event “When you have corporate citizens as these step up the way they did, we’re able to bring a big show,” he said. “We’re going to have some Course d’Elegance level pieces here for people to see.” Special guests will include Pulitzer Prize nominated Bill Eisner who has covered fires in Detroit for 50 years; Nicholas Neumann, owner of Fire Replicas, who has done models for a number of fire departments around the United States, but many specifically for the DFD; and possibly Andy Swift from Jay Leno’s Garage, if he can fit it into his schedule. DeNure said the interest in FireFest continues to spread well beyond Chatham-Kent’s borders. “We’ve really been touched by how many people from beyond Chatham-Kent have reached out. I got a call from a lady from Windsor who wanted to know how she and her family could volunteer. FireFest had become an annual event for she and her family. She’s got one son now that

is pursuing a career in emergency services and they credit FireFest as being a catalyst for that,” he said. Because of the DFD flavour this year, DeNure said there will be members of the Detroit media on hand for FireFest. Canniff said the event is a big one for the community. “This is one of many events we need to have in Chatham-Kent. It brings the community together. It’s a world-class event,” he said. “There are going to be over a hundred different fire engines, one of the biggest such events in North America. We’re going to attract over 10,000 people to this event.” Dava Robichaud is co-chairing this year’s FireFest, and DeNure called her a “beacon of new energy and life.” Robichaud said she
wanted to get involved for multiple reasons. “I love to do things in the community. I was born and raised here. Having things to do for my family, for my grandkids, is big. So if I want things for them to do, I have to get involved,” she said. “My father was a firefighter and so it was important to me to help Brent bring this event back. It’s something, as a family, my kids got to see a part of their grandpa that they never ever knew.” Cathy Smith of Waste Connections Canada said this is the third year the company has sponsored FireFest. “We really feel entrenched in the community. We’re a part of it. We like to create opportunities for the community to come together,” she said. Milinda Chambers, community engagement team

member at TekSavvy said her firm is happy to assist. “We want to be a player in helping the community. It’s very important to us. It’s a big initiative this year,” she said. “This is a very important event that we feel we must support.” FireFest’s big day is Sept. 21, but the event begins in Thamesville Sept. 20. “Every year we make a concerted effort for it to be a Chatham-Kent event. On the Friday before (Sept. 20), we’re going to convoy out to Thamesville and have a nice cruise through the streets of Thamesville and stage the trucks in front of Johnny Quest’s for an hour or so,” DeNure said. On Sept. 21, FireFest opens at 10 a.m. There will be children’s activities in the downtown as well. Plus the DFD Clown Team will be at the event
for much of the day. The parade will signal the end of FireFest at 4 p.m. The route will be different this year, due to the construction along Grand Avenue. It will run west on King Street to Merritt Avenue, then to Riverview Drive and then north on Keil Drive to the former Target parking lot. As for the future of FireFest, DeNure said it is bright. “After what Mayor Canniff did and with the new energy that’s been introduced, it would be foolish to just make this a one and out. Hazardous waste day Saturday

Not sure how to dispose of your old paint, engine oil or batteries? For the 19th year, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent has got you covered. The annual Household Hazardous Waste Day (HHWD) takes place Sept. 14 at three locations in the municipality, allowing residents who have household hazardous waste to safely dispose of the materials at no charge. Rick Kucera, manager of waste and recycling services for the municipality, said the day takes place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at
municipal public works garages in Chatham (25 Creek Rd.), Chatham Township (10137 Greenvalley Line) and Tilbury (4 Tower St.) to accept residential hazardous waste. Acceptable materials include pool chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, gasoline, paint, oil, batteries, propane cylinders (max. 30 lbs.) and biohazardous needles. All that is needed is decent weather for all three locations, especially Chatham, to be very busy. “All we do is pray for good weather and the
turnout is usually very solid,” Kucera said. He said Waste Connections Canada, the company that operates Ridge Landfill, pays for the HHWD. “It’s one of the many benefits of being a host community (for the landfill),” he said. “It’s been a partnership since Day One.” Historically, HHWD depots have seen between 800 and 1,200 vehicles in Chatham, and from 150 to 350 at the outlying locations. “We’ve had pretty steady numbers the last four years,” Kucera said. Initially, HHWD events
saw a large diversity in what was dropped off, including some very hazardous material. “The very first year, I remember things had just shut down and a car drove through containing three one-litre lab bottles of pure mercury. It was a bit scary and very surprising to say the least,” he said. “That’s probably the most bizarre waste we’ve ever received.” Kucera said the company that provided the collection service at the time for HHWD sold the mercury to a pharmaceutical-related business. “It’s mostly oil, paint, batteries, corrosives, a mi-
nor amount of household pesticides, etc. That’s definitely the bulk of it,” he said of what is typically dropped off. “Almost everything is either reused or recycled in some

It’s not going to be the big thing it used to be. It’s going to have a different focus. helping youth. “All the funds raised by youth are also going to be invested by youth. It’s going to be a self-contained mini-campaign of the United Way,” he said. “That way, they have the whole experience from project development into actually looking at the causes that are out in the community, and how to support them. They’ll get to see the whole cycle.” Overall, Pratt said UWOCK’s reach last year extended to more than 45,000 individuals in Cha-
tham-Kent, through 30-plus funded programs. Slager thinks Advanced could be blazing a new trail in terms of campaign leadership. “It shows the companies of Chatham-Kent they have an opportunity to lead the way,” he said. Myers agreed. “Maybe in the future, more companies will step up (to ‘chair’). The more help you have, the better chance there is of success,” he said.

Teamwork approach For years, the United Way of Chatham-Kent’s annual fundraising campaigns were led by one or two people; chairs and co-chairs. That’s a great deal of work, leading the way to raise $1.5 to more than $2 million dollars each year. The chairs attend countless meetings, donation events and activities promoting the campaign and asking for support for tens of thousands of those in need in Chatham-Kent. This year, the folks at Advanced Realty leapt outside the box. All seven people at the small business make up the leadership for the 2019 campaign. It makes excellent sense, as small business is the backbone of our local economy. Business owners and managers are very busy people and very often don’t have the ability to commit the large amount of time the campaign needs. But a team of dedicated individuals collectively can. Led by broker of record Bill Myers and sales rep Tricia Weese, the Advanced team has a $1.5-million target for this year. Weese, a former Chatham Voice staffer, has volunteered for many years for the United Way. Being the mother of a young child, she does not have the time to chair the campaign alone. Ditto for Myers, who enjoys giving back to the community, but couldn’t commit to chairing or even co-chairing the fundraising campaign. Add on Advanced’s teammates, and Myers and Weese are well supported in leading the charge. Advanced has sponsored various United Way events in recent years, so it is a cause near and dear to everyone’s heart at the business. Taking the team approach has delivered a “why didn’t someone think of this sooner” moment to many a fundraising brain. We’ve had some very strong past campaign chairs and co-chairs, but those were people who generally had enough spare time to give to the campaign to do it justice. On a couple of other occasions over the past decade or so, it was a struggle for one or both co-chairs. The commitment and pressure can be exhausting. But this year, with a team approach, it will be interesting to see the energy level from the campaign leaders day in and day out, and to see how it impacts the fundraising bottom line when the campaign comes to a close. We think this is the start of a new trend.

How long can this study wait? Sir: I am writing with a concern about the lack of speed with which the well water investigation in Chatham-Kent is taking place. During the election campaign, now Premier Ford submitted a letter that such an investigation would take place, if he were elected. More then a year after being elected, Minister of Labour Monte McNaughton made an announcement, to a small select group, on July 19, indicating that a committee had been formed to investigate this issue. Promises made, promises kept. The news media recently released that the committee should have their report completed by the end of 2020. This brings to mind a saying of the late Chip Gordon, a councillor in Chatham-Kent who said, “When all is said and done, there is a lot more
said than done.” This committee has been formed for over a month and no one in the area has heard anything from any of them. Have they figured out geographically where Chatham-Kent is yet? Do you think for even a moment that the people in Dover Township, who have had well water concerns since 2012 or longer, are satisfied with this time frame? Do you think that the people in Chatham Township with water well problems since 2016 are satisfied with this time frame? There are families whose wells were choked off by the black particles; there are some whose water was discolored by the particles; and there are some, like mine, whose water was clear and is still clear, but have had dramatic changes in
the analysis, especially the heavy metals. I was fortunate enough to have had water analysis done before turbine construction in my area in 2012 and then again in 2016 and 2019. The aquifer water should not change like that unless reacted upon by an extraneous action like pile driving for turbine construction or the turbine operation vibration. You and many others do not realize what it feels like to bring in water for drinking and cooking. Most of us still bathe, wash dishes and clothes in this water and are constantly worried about any health effects it may have on our families and us. How about those whose well water appearance has not changed, but like mine, has increased toxic matter in it now. Does an
almost 10-year wait seem like a reasonable length of time to have to wait? I would think that the boots need to hit the road! Samples should be immediately taken from all wells that are near turbines, possibly starting with the closest ones first. Let the toxicologists study the analysis and dangers associated with the combined effect that these elements will have on humans. Perhaps there also need to be blood or tissue tests done on some residents to see if the harmful effects are already taking place. Does the committee even have a plan in place yet? Small but mighty turnout for walk

There may not have been a huge turnout, but the people and their dogs who did make it to the first annual Love of Paws Dog Walk had great weather for walking the Mud Creek trail in Chatham on Sunday. Organized by Chatham-Kent Animal Rescue (CKAR), the event featured a dog walk for participants who donated $10 or registered with sponsors to complete the three-kilometre circuit around Mud Creek near
the end of Cecile Street. Hot dogs and drinks were sold by donation, and dog apparel – coats and even costumes – were available by donation as well. Nancy Ball, event organizer, said at the end of the day, just over $1,000 was raised for the animal rescue, which is an entirely volunteer organization rescuing dogs and cats and taking in surrenders for more than 10 years in Chatham. A separate organization from the Chatham-Kent Animal Shelter, CKAR relies on donations to pay for vet bills, medication
and food for the animals they rescue. The animals are vetted and put into foster homes until adoptive homes can be found for them. CKAR also offers the Purple Leash Program which helps seniors who are hospitalized take care of their pets until they are home again, and women fleeing domestic violence until they are able to take their pets back. Boxes and Blankets returns Sept. 20 The Chatham Voice
On Sept. 20, dozens of people will be sleeping on the street in Chatham as part of the annual Boxes and Blankets event. Organized by Chatham Hope Haven, Boxes and
Blankets is where people sleep for a night, on the street, with only boxes and blankets. The objective is to shed light on the issue of homelessness, as well as raise money for the mission, which opened in Novem-
ber 2017. Wanda Bell, Communications Co-cordinator at the Haven, encourages churches, businesses, organizations, youth group leaders, teachers, families and individuals to sign up and gather pledges.
All segments of society, working together, can shed light on the plight of the less fortunate. Sleeping on the street is not easy; it is uncomfortable and could be cold – but this experience will give participants a chance
to see how difficult it is to live on the streets, officials said. Chatham Hope Haven provides a safe, supervised place to sleep for up to 10 homeless men. The homeless men receive supper and breakfast, as
well as a shower and an opportunity to do their laundry. Pledge forms are available at the office at 183 Wellington Street West or on the website chathamhopehaven.com.

City of Stars, a Gala Dinner and Show that will feature guest stars from past Saturdays at 7 concerts, will be held at the John D. Bradley Centre on Sept. 21. As the sanctuary of St. Andrew’s United Church, the regular venue for Saturdays at 7 concerts, will be closed for three months this fall for restoration work, this event will be held at the John D. Bradley Centre. This provides an opportunity for the congregation and the community to come together to enjoy a special dinner and Saturdays at 7 evening of entertainment in support of the Join the Journey Building Restoration Fund, church officials said. The restoration work includes reinforcement of the roof to protect the sanctuary for generations to come. The City of Stars program will showcase the musical treasures of Hollywood film from which some of the greatest songs in the last century have come. Beginning in the roaring 1920s, music started to be placed in many shows. City of Stars will highlight many of these famous songs as it travels to each decade from the 1920s all the way to
community members and talent outside the community. Fire up that barbecue, people! As I sat in our backyard on a recent Sunday, the smell of wonderfully seasoned chicken wings wafting up from our Big Green Egg grill, I came to realize I let my family and friends down this summer just by not barbecuing more. The Egg needs a good workout, and when that happens, we enjoy some tasty food. On the weekend in question, we benefitted from taking some time to grill and chill. On the Saturday, with our kid off to a friend’s place that afternoon for a sleepover, Mary Beth and I went shopping – to meat markets. Our first stop: Lenovers. We promised friends we’d cook up some of the tasty wings that they missed the previous weekend at another Corcoran Backyard Event. I called ahead late morning to ensure they had a healthy dose of fresh wings on hand. They did. But we got there shortly after 2 p.m. and that healthy dose had dwindled. I wanted to order four pounds of wings, only to see the guy right in front of me snag the last of the fresh wings in the store. My wife reminded me this is what can happen when I write about things. I had mentioned the pterodactyl wings Lenovers had that very week in my column. And they vanished in front of me on Saturday. Thankfully, they did have frozen wings that were just as big. But they were not split, and
Bruce Corcoran included the tips. No problem, flipping one big wing is easier and quicker than two smaller pieces. Plus, they were cheaper per pound. Two boxes went home with us, probably about seven pounds of wings. Next up, we stopped at Schinkels’ and discovered a Sriracha Teriyaki sauce that looked like it would be awesome on steak and other meat. After a great chat with Cory about smoking and barbecuing, sauces and meat, he went off and cut us a couple of beautiful ribeye steaks. We snagged a couple of shrimp kabobs, and some potatoes, plus a bottle of Rufus Teague barbecue sauce. Mary started the potatoes in the microwave, then sliced them in half and added seasoning and spice and we finished them on the Egg. I screwed up on the ribeyes, cooking them a little long. They came off medium to medium-well rather than medium rare. But the Egg, and the quality cut of meat, made sure all was well. We could cut our steaks very easily with a butter knife. We only used some salt and pepper on the steaks this time around, and they were delicious. The potatoes and shrimp were pretty great

as well. The next day, friends Pete and Arlene popped by and we had some more fun with the Egg, despite the rain that day. It cleared off long enough for me to cook up more shrimp, this time in garlic butter, followed by the prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, and then all the wings. Add to that guacamole dip, and a cheese-spinach dip and pot stickers, and we had a great meal. Too filling, and there were a lot of leftovers. We capped off the fun by doing smores cones. We’ve done this before, but not for a while. You get small waffle cones or sugar cones and fill them with layers of chocolate chips, mini-marshmallows and crushed graham cracker. You them put them on the grill for five to seven
minutes. I have a metal pepper stand for cooking stuffed
jalapeno peppers, so we had the perfect stand for doing the cones.
Nothing fancy for dessert, just a nice change.
