Days after learning of a controversial billboard being erected in Chatham-Kent, several local folks started planning to counteract any negativity with #signsoflove. Chatham Coun. Brock McGregor and his wife Whitney started discussing what to do, and involved friend John Lyons. “Brock and Whitney came up with this idea on Saturday (Aug. 25) after the big billboard caused them to
think about something that we could do,” Lyons said. “We had to do something.” The billboard, which was located just outside Dresden, read, “God says no to homosexuality & abortion.” It came down early last week. Despite its removal, the McGregors and Lyons went ahead with their planning on how to get people to use the hashtag “signsoflove” in social media. “Emotions were running high on the weekend. People were angry,” Lyons said. “We thought rather

Since retiring from St. Joseph’s Hospital laboratory 20 years ago, Kathy Smyth of Tilbury has turned her green thumb and welcoming home into a labour of love at Katharine’s Bed and Breakfast in Tilbury, and a new position as president of the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA). Smyth, whose love of gardening came from days of going with her mom to pick up flowers, has been involved with the Tilbury and District Horticultural Society for years. “I‘ve been a member of the Tilbury Horticultural Society for 18 years, since I joined in 1999, and have held various positions,” Smyth said. “I’ve been a board member of the OHA for six years, repre-
senting District 11, which consists of Essex and Lambton Counties and Chatham-Kent.” With a beautifully landscaped property in Tilbury, Smyth said she has had a love of gardening her whole life, and her retirement allowed her to pursue that hobby. As the incoming president of the OHA, she said she was nominated and then acclaimed to the position. There are 19 districts, 289 horticultural societies and 28,000-plus members in Ontario, according to Smyth, and the organization has not had a convention since 2003. That will be changing in 2019 as Smyth is tasked with organizing the OHA convention being held in Windsor July 20-22 at Best Western and St. Clair College. Smyth said the theme of the convention is, “Come to the Deep

South Where Everything Grows,” and it will feature Chatham-Kent’s Kim Cooper as a speaker on the topic of How We Grow the World. The main speaker for the event, who Smyth is very pleased to have at the convention, is David Phillips, a senior climatologist for Environment Canada, and a dynamic speaker. Matt Korpan from Truly Green will also be on hand to speak about his company’s partnership with Greenfield Ethanol in harnessing the steam from the production facility and piping it across the road to the greenhouses to heat the facility – an excellent example of green energy. Smyth, with years of experience and knowledge, is set to take on the tasks ahead of her next year as president, convention chair and small business
owner. She is looking forward to a full weekend at the convention with bus trips, seminar sessions and featured speakers. “There will be sessions on different horticultural topics and people from different districts will get a chance to see a different area and what grows here. From North Bay to Cornwall to the south, it can be very different,” Smyth said. “We also have a native plants vendor lined up from Amherstburg.” Gardening is a hobby that can be very therapeutic, and Smyth said she is seeing more gardening therapy at nursing homes. “It can really give people a purpose and a sense of peace. Instead of being confined to a chair or a bed, they can have a small garden or containers to care for and nurture,” she noted. Anyone interested in

An anti-gay billboard located just outside Dresden is no more. The controversial sign came down less than a week after being erected. A large portion of the sign read, “God says no to homosexuality & abortion.” It caused an uproar. The man behind the sign, Ralph Baker of Petrolia, had his phone, the number of which was right on the sign, ring off the hook. Marianne Wilson, president of the Chatham-Kent Gay Pride Association, said the billboard – locat-
ed at the intersection of Highway 21, Kent Bridge Road and Countryview Line south of Dresden – had to go, as it had “attacked the very soul” of Chatham-Kent. “We are very happy to have this message no longer in the landscape, and it has inspired our community to continue to celebrate the diversity and love that is represented in Chatham-Kent,” she said in a statement. “This experience shows us all that our work is not done. We will continue to embrace the inclusivity, love and unity that exists. We will continue to build an open
and safe community for everyone.” Wilson said respectful and open dialogue is needed to help dispel hate and fear. The sign also read, “Bibles back in schools! ‘Let the bible be your teacher;’” “Marijuana or peace with God;” and “A ship without a rudder is tossed to & fro.” Municipal officials say they became aware of the billboard Aug. 23 and began an investigation into whether it violated any bylaws or regulations over which the municipality has control. The Chatham-Kent Children’s’ Safety Village (CKCSV) held its annual Farm Safety Day recently, unveiling a new safety program that is the first of its kind in Canada. With the OPP, the CKCSV board showcased a new ATV simulator that will be used to teach ATV safety to children in Chatham-Kent. Board Chair Gary Patterson said the project was started in response to concerns about the high number of ATV-related accidents and injuries occurring in this jurisdiction. Very busy month for C-K Autumn may be just around the corner, but September has shaped up to be a pretty awesome month locally. Kudos to the organizers of various big events, as there really is something for everyone. The biggest of all is the 2018 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo. Running Sept. 18-22, the international competition comes to Pain Court Line. The property has been bustling with activity recently, as Hydro One crews ran power to the “tented city,” the tents went up and last minute preparations continue. That includes a media day this week. Estimates place upwards of 80,000 to 100,000 people attending the event, half of which will come from outside Chatham-Kent. That’s a huge influx of funds into the local economy on various levels, and great exposure for us as well from the agricultural community. And if there is one thing we really do right, it’s agriculture. We’re essentially Ontario’s vegetable garden, given our fertile soil and miles of flat, farmable land. We’ll also have the premier of Ontario down for the event, and the prime minister could stop by as well. But if all you care about agriculture is the food that is on your plate each day, then maybe a more urban event is up your alley. How about the Sept. 13 Downtown in the City Extravaganza, where 50 downtown Chatham businesses are taking part. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., check out the downtown, visit various merchants for chances to win prizes, shop, take part in a wide variety of activities or watch various demonstrations. For anyone in need of an injection of positive thinking, the 12 Days of Positivity in C-K are underway. There are events going on daily from now until Sept. 13. It all is capped off by a $10,000 giveaway – $5,000 in cash and $5,000 in travel vouchers – to one lucky recipient. Perhaps you have an interest in sports. That’s where the Princess Auto Elite 10 comes into play at the end of the month. From Sept. 26-30, some of the top men’s and women’s curling teams in the world will compete in Chatham. Olympic champs, world champs, Canadian and European champs, we’ve got them on the ice at Thames Campus Arena. Organizers estimate the event can bring as much as $1.3 million into the local economy. Please don’t clog up the exits Sir: People have no respect for others by putting their bikes between the double door entrance/exit area of fast food restaurants and coffee shops. Sometimes, I’m talking about two or three bikes at a time. This makes it difficult for people with walkers and wheelchairs.
If a fire ever breaks out, who knows what could happen. The fire department people walk in right pass the bikes and know the law is being broken and do nothing until something dangerous happens under the fire code. By that time it’s too late. The fire code laws can
and do get broken here in Chatham-Kent. It’s illegal to block a fire exit and both the bike and business owners can be charged for blocking a fire exit with bicycles. For the safety and respect of everyone, I hope they will stop parking their bikes between the
double door used for entrances and exits. The business owners will have to start getting stricter to solve that problem and fire fighters will have to do their job when the law is being broken. Murray Holland Chatham

Children at the Safety Village camps will be taught safety with the simulator, which is portable and can also be brought to other locations. Children using the simulator will be wearing proper safety equipment, and the OPP want to remind ATV riders that they must remain on private property unless they are a licensed driver over 16 on a designated roadway. To further bring home to kids the dangers of improper riding of an ATV, police, ambulance and fire personnel staged a mock ATV rollover to showcase not only injuries that can occur, but also how first responders come together to assess, treat and transport accident victims. Safety Village executive director Barb Lovell said the ATV simulator adds to the interactive safety programs they offer chil-
dren, including the new grain displacement interactive display, which teaches kids about safety when around grain storage units or machinery. During Farm Safety Day, several members of the agricultural community were on hand at several stations to teach safety with farm equipment, including Jordan Lesy with McGrail Farm Equipment, who demonstrated what can happen when you play around the Power Take Off (PTO) plug in at the back of tractor where the equipment is plugged in. PTO Pam, a mannequin stuffed with straw, suffered fatal injuries while sitting on the PTO when the cutting attachment on the tractor was fired up. They also included safety around farm animals with TJ Stables, a barbecue lunch and some farm safety swag to take home.

Cancer run comes to C-K

Although the CIBC Run for the Cure breast cancer fundraiser has been around for 27 years, this year marks the first year Chatham-Kent will host the family-friendly event. Set for Sept. 30 and starting from the Union Gas IT Centre on Bloomfield Road in Chatham, the 5K (or 1K) walk or run will be a chance to raise money for breast cancer research and celebrate local women who have fought and survived the life-changing illness. Run co-directors Rachel MacLeod and Joan Byng, and their committees, have been hard at work organizing the run and said they want it to be a family-friendly celebration that acknowledges survivors and their journey, and the family and friends who support them. “This is the first year in Chatham-Kent and the very first of its kind in a rural area. Usually the run is in larger urban centres,” MacLeod noted. “There is a walk or run option. It will be very family-friendly and really celebrates breast cancer survivors.” She said the survivors will be set up in a tent with special treats and will kick off the run with a survivors’ parade to introduce
them. From the start to finish, the day will be full of activities, entertainment and celebration, including face and nail painting, music and refreshments. Last year in Ontario, the run had 85,000 total participants and raised $17 million for breast cancer research. McLeod said the goal the committee has for their first run here in Chatham-Kent is to introduce the new event to the community and have 250 participants. Also on the run committee as the Day Of Experience chair is 10-year breast cancer survivor and Chatham resident Rebecca Johnston, who has been participating in the run in London for the past 10 years. “I’m very happy I can celebrate my 10-year milestone here this year with my team Becca’s Bunch,” Johnston said. “I was diagnosed at age 25 with Stage 3 breast cancer. I did the chemotherapy and radiation treatment and I’m doing really well now.” At the 10-year mark since her diagnosis, Johnston can now go off the final part of her treatment and truly celebrate. She said getting a cancer diagnosis so young really brought home to her that it can happen to any one at any time.

Good news for this spring’s flood victims, as the due date for applications for the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians Program has been extended to Oct. 15. The “Activation Area” has also been expanded, according to the office of Chatham-Kent Leamington MPP Rick Nicholls. This is the geographic region designated as hav-

Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service are mourning the passing of former Chief John Kopinak who died Aug. 28 after a battle with cancer. Chatham-Kent Police Services Board Chair Pat Weaver said the community owes Chief Kopinak a large debt. “John became police chief at a pivotal point in John Kopinak our community and was tasked with creating a new Chatham-Kent Police Service,” he said in a media release. “He laid the foundation for what has become one of the finest services of its kind in the province.” Kopinak’s career began in 1968 with the Port Colborne Police and he later served in executive capacities with the Niagara Regional Police force, the Provincial Solicitor General’s office and the Canadian Police College. He was a graduate of the FBI Academy in Quantico. After retiring from the government sector, John became the Deputy Police Chief for CP Rail. In 1998, three months after retiring from that position he was recruited for the Chatham-Kent police chief position. Current Chatham-Kent Police Chief Gary Conn called Kopinak “the architect of the Chatham-Kent police service. “Chief Kopinak had the arduous task of amalgamating the Dresden, Chatham Wallaceburg and Tilbury services, while patrolling one of the largest geographical municipalities in the province and keeping costs below the provincial average,” he said. Conn noted that at the same time, the province was implementing adequacy standards and regulations for all police services in Ontario that required chiefs of police to ensure members in their services complete ministry-accredited training. “This was a monumental task in our profession,” he said. Conn said Kopinak had a fundamental belief in community-based policing and continuous staff training. Conn was personally involved in what Kopinak called “cross pollination” of policing when Kopinak approved a two-year secondment for Conn as an instructor at the Ontario Police College. Kopinak retired after serving as chief for more than three years.

This equestrian program isn’t for your average horse enthusiast. You have to be particularly acceptional to take part. It’s TJ Stables’ Acceptional Rider program, a charitable therapeutic riding program that has catered to children through adults with disabilities since 1992. It teaches them horsemanship and riding skills. The fall session at TJ’s is slated to start Sept. 17. This past spring’s session featured about 150 riders. The Knights of Valour
Medieval Jousting Show is a major fundraising program for the Acceptional Riders. In late May, armoured knights showcased their riding skills, and skills with the lance, as horses’ hooves thundered, and knights tried their best to unseat one another in the jousting competition. Terry Jenkins, who runs TJ Stables, said the Knights of Valour have been supporting TJ Stables for the past eight years. But the funds raised from the show don’t cover all the costs of running the Acceptional Riders program.
“This fundraiser helps the entire program, but particularly for the spring session,” she said. Families pay a fee to have their children take part, plus there are additional costs that need to be covered. Jenkins said no riders are turned away, even if a family doesn’t have the funds to pay for the program. “We take them anyway and rely on the good citizens of Chatham-Kent to help us out,” she said. “There’s always an increased need because more and more people become aware of our
program. We don’t want to turn down anyone because of funding issues.” Jenkins said the support costs for each rider is about $500 per session, with families charged $225. “Our insurance is crazy for that program. We also need equipment – depending on the particular rider. It has to be hand made,” she said. Some of that equipment can be quite specialized. “We have one little guy who can’t sit up straight on the horse, but we designed an adaptive device,” Jenkins said. Support for the program
is large, with a volunteer base of about 80 people. Jenkins said some riders require up to three volunteers. But to her, it’s all worth it. “First of all, there’s a high need for recreational activities. And this is a recreational program with therapeutic benefits,” she said. “The therapy end of it is really beneficial for balance, etc.” The therapy doesn’t just end with the child either. “Where it’s really awesome is it’s not just for the rider. If you have a child that is always sidelined and has to watch his brothers play hockey and he can now ride, you’ll see the benefits from it. The entire family will benefit,” Jenkins said.
“The brothers, sisters and caregivers will come and watch it. “We’ve really found it’s gratifying to see how it helps the wellbeing of the riders and then the wellbeing of the entire family unit.” It’s also a social outing for participants. “We have riders who have been coming here for almost 20 years. They’re still coming because they have friends in the program,” Jenkins said. “They met here, but they now meet for bowling and go to the movies together. They’ve really created a social life for themselves.” The fall session begins Sept. 17. For more information, or to register, call 519-354-7517.

Rose added curling competition has gotten better, and younger, in recent years. “There’s a young surge of talent. Most of the ladies’ team members are in their 20s,” he explained. “These people are in great shape. They work out a lot. They’re pretty much professionals; they do nothing else but curl.” Curling may be getting younger, but Rose said it still appeals to all ages, and gender mixing for teams is in full swing. “The game has come a fair ways. We have people down at the club who are over 90 who

still curl. The boundaries have been expanded. The introduction of mixed doubles is going to be an area of growth,” he said. “That’s where it needs to go. It gets the young family who has kids curling together.” This is the fourth event Rose has chaired, as he did three previously during his time living in Newfoundland. He has run world-level bonspiels in the past and travelled with Grand Slam of Curling on a volunteer basis. He moved here in 2012, as he has a son whose family lives in Des Moines, Iowa. “It’s much easier driving from here. I like the winters a lot better here too,” he said. During his time working on curling events in Gander, and on the Grand Slam tour, Rose said he developed a wide variety of contacts, including former world and Olympic champion Kevin Martin, who is an ambassador of the Grand Slam tour and a television commentator. That helped get SportsNet interested in the possibility of Chatham hosting the Elite 10 event. “SportsNet came and looked at the facilities. We got things set and started selling tickets,” Rose said.

entertain each evening as well. The opening ceremonies take place the Wednesday evening after 6 p.m., with the first curling action beginning at 7 p.m. Quarter- and semi-final play takes place on the Saturday, followed by the finals on Sunday afternoon. Rose said the event will be a boon to the local economy, as 100 hotel rooms are booked at the Holiday Inn Express, for starters. There are 50 people alone coming with the SportsNet crew that will provide more than 27 hours of live coverage of the event. The teams and coaches also often travel with their
families, he added. Further, ticket sales have come from across southern Ontario. Elite 10 events can easily bring upwards of $1.3 million into the local economy, Rose said. The preparation for the Elite 10 event has underlined something Chatham is lacking, however, he added. “It is showcasing the need for another ice surface. We need a double pad at least,” he said. “I could have bid on and probably gotten the Tour Challenge – 60 teams. It’s a developmental event, but we’d have needed a double ice pad to do that.”

Thanks to a Trillium Foundation grant, area residents in need of grief support programs will be able to access them at Chatham-Kent Hospice. The Hospice’s third program, a six-week-long Grief and Bereavement
Walking Group, is to kick off Sept. 19. Since officially receiving funding from an Ontario Trillium Foundation Seed Grant in May of this year, the Chatham-Kent Hospice has launched a number of Well Within grief and bereavement programs to support in-
dividuals and families coping with the loss of a loved one. Included in these programs and services are weekly Yoga for Healing sessions, where participation has been growing since its mid-July kickoff, as well as a Hor-

Most wonderful time of the year? How are all the parents of school-aged kids out there? Order has returned from a summer of chaos for many. I used to feel the same way, looking forward to the return of the school year, but with Brenna now aged 16, the summer was more of a smooth process than the old days of chaos. Then again, the fact she has a boyfriend with his own vehicle might have spoiled Mary Beth and me. But the fall shuttle service is back in full swing. With her man Matt away at school, we’re the prime drivers again. She likes to sleep in as late as possible in the morning, so her prime option is to catch a ride from me just in time to get to school before the bell goes. And then there is the delivery to and from her dance classes numerous times a week. Our old office was a short walk from her school, but now we’re across town, so she has no option to walk here after school. More bus rides home for her. School being in session means getting lunches ready on a daily basis. We drop that requirement in her lap, but I know there will be more than a few times where one of us parents will have to put it together for the girl who is perennially run-
Bruce Corcoran ning late (I did the same thing as a kid, but don’t tell her that). So, while people with young kids are cheering the return of structure after a summer of “I’m bored; there’s nothing to do,” we’re on the other end of the spectrum. Plus, it means the start of another school year. Time flies. Kind gesture
I must say a word of thanks to Jean, a reader who sent us a kind “Congratulations” note recently. Jean also sent us a Tim Horton’s gift card for days when stress levels are running high. Sixty-two years ago, a group of retired women teachers met in Toronto to begin the task of gaining pensions equal to that of their male counterparts. Over the years, this small group has evolved into what is known today as the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario (RWT)/OERO), with over 75,000 members and 52 branches across Ontario. The new focus is “Caring and Sharing.” The Chatham-Kent branch gathers four times a year on the fourth Wednesdays of September, November, April and June, alternating locations between Countryview Golf Course and Charing Cross United Church. The group has 140-150 members, the oldest being 101 years. All retired women teachers are welcome. This Memorial Tribute is dedicated to those in Blenheim and Chatham for whom trees have been donated from September 1, 2017 to August 31, 2018 In 1967, the Lower Thames Conservation Authority acquired the 30 hectare property known as C.M. Wilson Conservation Area, named after Clarence Michael Wilson, a previous Chairman of the Authority. In 1997 McKinlay Funeral Homes partnered with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Foundation to designate a memorial forest site in this Conservation Area.
