Several residents along Erie Shore Drive fear they have lost their homes after high winds sent waves pounding ashore Aug. 2627. Others were encouraged to evacuate, as Hydro One crews prepared to cut power to their homes.

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff declared a state of emergency for the area Aug. 27.

Trevor Dixon has lived on the east end of the road for the past 31 years. He said he’s never seen conditions so bad.

“I’ve never had water in my home before,” he said.

“The storm surge pushed so hard the septic started bubbling up under my toilet. We had floating floors.”

That began about 2 a.m. and the waves kept pounding.

He and his wife Leslie and their children worked to get as much off the floor as possible as the water continued to flow into the house “from every crack,” Dixon said.

“We saved some family mementos,” he said.

Dixon’s wife Leslie said the entire ground floor is “demolished,” and it is up to the insurance company to decide if the home is a write off.

South Kent Coun. Trevor Thompson said he visited Erie Shore Drive early Aug. 27 and understands residents’ frustration, as other people may not comprehend the problem.

“I’m dying a thousand deaths here. In general, it’s kind of a nice little day out there. And these folks are suffering,” he said.

“It’s not terribly windy.

But it has come to this.”

Thompson said more needs to be done, but wonders who will or can pay for it.

“Residents can’t afford to protect their properties. The municipality can’t afford to take this on. Senior levels of government are not stepping up at this point,” he said.

“There always seem to be programs here, some funding there, but we’ve had little more than conversations. I don’t know

what we’re doing wrong or how we go about this.

Every time we approach them for funding, it’s just not there.”

Meanwhile, Dixon said it is a seemingly never ending cycle through which the residents suffer.

“Here’s the big kick in the groin, they may fix this all up and it could just happen again in a month,” he said.

Waiting for Ont. funding

The Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent is in hurry-upand-wait mode in terms of their quest for a new building.

They’ve done the hurry up: The community fundraising and support has been fast and very forthcoming.

But now they are waiting for their funding ministry, the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, to catch up.

Donna Litwin-Makey, executive director of the centre, said the Children’s Treatment Centre has continuously requested government funding since 2011 for a new building due to significant caseload and program growth, and to provide the best service and facility for our community.

It enacted its Butterfly Build campaign and the donations from local sources began pouring in.

Treatment centre officials found property on McNaughton Avenue West in 2017 to erect the new 50,000 square foot facility.

Litwin-Makey said the

centre has the support from local MPP Rick Nicholls and MPP Monte McNaughton, as well as the municipality.

But funding support from the province is still awaited.

“It’s been a long road.

Children’s treatment centres have unique paths,” Litwin-Makey explained.

“They are more one-off approvals. There is not a budget line within our funding ministry that addresses new builds. Each time, the circumstances are different.”

Due to the efficiency of local fundraising and the support from the community, the waiting game is now in place.

“Part of the complexity is that we were asked to demonstrate there is acceptance and support in the community, including a local fundraising commitment and to have a spot to expand to,” Litwin-Makey said. “We did both of those and I think we moved along very quickly. Chatham-Kent is very supportive. But in larger urban centres, they have been fundraising (for new buildings) a lot longer. Perhaps we

To help encourage the province to provide funding to begin the build, the centre has client and family ambassadors reaching out asking for letters of support.

Past clients and current centre ambassadors Ashley Gialelem and Cristian Picard know first hand the need for a new centre.

“It’s time for a new Children’s Treatment Centre for a brighter tomorrow,” Picard said.

“Our voices need to be heard. I know we can do this together,” Gialelem said.

Litwin-Makey said the people of Chatham-Kent continually step up to support various causes, including the centre’s Butterfly Build campaign.

“Now, it’s time to advocate to make sure our needs for our kids and families are addressed.”

The current centre was built to serve 250 kids. It serves caseloads totalling 4,980 children and youth with hundreds more waiting for programs.

Litwin-Makey, said the current 25,000 square-foot building on Lark Street was built in 1984 and renovated in 1998.

“We need more group space, more space for teens and youth, bigger

rooms that are multi-purpose. It’s a different kind of space than what we needed in the past,” Litwin-Makey said.

She said there is not much more they can do to make use of their existing

space.

“We keep our building in good shape, but we have a number of very small individual treatment rooms. We’ve had to convert things for offices.

Waiting game The Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent has been a tremendous asset to families in this community for 71 years, serving as a non-profit treatment centre that provides specialized therapy and innovative programs to empower children and youth with special needs to reach their individual potential.

When the centre was first built, it was to serve 250 children, and the building is now bursting at the seams, with more than 4,000 children and young adults accessing innovative programs, with more on the waiting list.

Cue the Butterfly Building Campaign. It began in 2017 and hit the ground running, with tremendous support from the community to raise the committed $6 million for equipment, furniture and ongoing funding for programs. The fundraising has been incredible to date and we would expect no less from C-K residents, businesses and service clubs who always step up when the need is there.

The total price tag for the new building is $28.5 million, and the CTC-CK is still waiting to hear, two years later, if the province will be funding the $22.5 million needed to complete the project. With a new government in place, it is understandable it would need to get up to speed with funding applications, but hopefully, our local MPPS Rick Nicholls and Monte McNaughton are all over it and pushing the new building as a need, not a want.

The Children’s Treatment Centre does so much to support and enable kids with special needs to dream big and realize there is nothing they can’t do with a little help from their CTC friends and family.

From annual Challenger Baseball where the kids get to feel like stars on a big baseball field, complete with screaming fans, to adapted Sailing Camp, to the therapy pool – the CTC staff work hard to ensure the children in their care don’t just survive, they thrive.

With a letter-writing campaign now underway to encourage the provincial government to see how important a new, bigger facility is, we encourage everyone who can pick up a pen or peck out a letter on his or her computer to add that to their support of the CTC. This is Chatham-Kent and supporting our community assets is what we do.

Schoolyard or parking lot?

Sir: My Grandson is starting school this week, so I thought we would walk over to his new school, McNaughton Avenue P.S and check it out in advance.

I was concerned to see that an area at the back of the school that had been

part of the schoolyard, was being paved over for parking.

Another area, also at the back of the school, was being fenced off – for what I couldn’t figure out – and another area at the front

of the school, next to Kids Stuff, had also become a parking lot.

While the school is on a very large peace of land, it’s concerning to me that monies that go into education, from local taxpayers and

from the province, are not being used for “education” but for high-priced parking lots, while at the same time depriving students of play space.

Are our trustees aware of this?

Get up, get moving and fight cancer Sir: Most of us know why cancer research is important. The more we study different cancers, such as breast cancer, the more we know about how best to diagnose, treat and live with and beyond them. But what about research that can help us prevent cancer?

A recent study funded by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) – the ComPARe study – found that about four in 10 cancer cases can be prevented through

healthy living and policies that protect the health of Canadians. The ComPARe study looked at more than 20 modifiable cancer risk factors and their association with 30 different cancer types.

A standout finding of the ComPARe study is that about 28 per cent of breast cancer cases can be prevented by increasing physical activity and healthy eating as well as

decreasing tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption and sedentary behaviour. Findings like this can help us make decisions about our lifestyles and compel governments to implement healthy public policies that could help reduce our cancer risk in the future.

events like the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure, CCS is able to fund even more research into how we can prevent, diagnose, treat, and live with and beyond breast cancer.

New transit routes The Chatham Voice

CKTransit has added another bus route in Chatham and expanded its Inter-Urban Service.

CKTransit has launched a new fifth conventional route in Chatham as well as an additional midday trip on the Inter-Urban Service after council unanimously approved the enhancements.

The additional Chatham route will provide riders with a second option to travel along Grand Avenue West to St. Clair College Thames Campus.

The route will also service the new Cascades Casino, Holiday Inn, Bradley Convention Centre complex as well as Richmond Street to Queen which has been a dead zone for bus services.

“With the capacity of our current buses and the increase in our ridership, we have had some over-

crowding and even some service denials on the way to St. Clair College,” said Ann-Marie Millson, Manager, Linear Assets for the municipality, in a press release. “Reliability is important to keep and grow our ridership so this new service will address that capacity issue as well as service a destination we believe will be in high demand.”

Staff will also be making minor adjustments to the existing conventional routes to better ensure they adhere to their 30-minute frequency. The additional fifth route, which will be a one-hour route, intends to have connection points with each of the existing routes to provide riders with more transfer points outside of the Downtown

The mid-day Inter-Urban trip will be in effect for Routes A, C, and D, which service Wallaceburg/Dresden, Blenheim/Ridgetown, and Tilbury/South Kent respectively. Mid-day run will not take place on Saturdays or Statutory Holidays.

Route A will now service St. Clair College when returning to Chatham from Wallaceburg with a minor route change in Wallaceburg and in Chatham. Route D will now service Jeanette’s Creek when leaving Tilbury and will now stop at St. Clair College. Routes A and D will cross over Route 5 as a transfer point.

LTVCA worried about provincial changes The Chatham Voice

Recently the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) received a letter from Minister Jeff Yurek, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks, that will have a significant impact on our local communities, LTVCA officials said. The letter was addressed to “whom it may concern” and included a “request” to conservation authorities to “begin preparations and planning to wind down those activities that fall outside the scope of your

core mandate.”

Linda McKinlay, Chair of the Lower Thames Conservation Authority, said the letter is worrying.

“Should the negative directions outlined in the letter be carried out, they could represent one of the largest, single attacks on local environmental programs in Ontario’s history,” she said in a media release.

The minister’s letter, instead of allowing local governments and communities to continue local conservation efforts, suggests that Conservation Authorities

Their news release said Conservation Ontario and conservation authorities are “stunned” by the minister’s letter.

There was no consultation with Conservation Ontario or the CAs about the content of the letter before it was circulated, according to the news release.

The minister’s letter was issued before discussion of regulations that would go with the legislation, according to Conservation Ontario. Discussions are “only beginning... about the regulations that go with the legislation which will specify which actual programs and services are mandatory,” Gavine said.

For more than 70 years, the mandate of the conservation authorities has been to provide, “in the area over which it has jurisdiction, programs and services designed to further the conservation, restoration, development and management of natural resources.

The provincial government is working to take the “Conservation” out of Conservation Authorities when climate change is making this work even more important, LTVCA officials said.

“As Chair of the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority, I believe these actions are cynical in nature, as they do not represent any financial savings to the Province of Ontario. In fact, significant grants could be lost that are currently funding local environmental programs,” McKinlay said.

The LTVCA is asking its municipalities and community members to support the Conservation Authority at this time by challenging this approach in letters to Yurek.

Speakeasy gala set for Sept. 14 Airport plays host to United Way event

It’s been six years, but the United Way of Chatham-Kent (UWOCK)is bringing back its fall gala.

With a nod to Chatham-Kent’s rum running history, UWOCK will send guests back in time with a speakeasy-themed fundraiser gala as they team up with Gentry Manor and the Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport again.

The Rum Runners Gala, will take place Sept. 14 in support of United Way’s 2019 campaign. Embracing fashions and attitude of the 1920s and ’30s is highly encouraged as there will be many unique photo opportunities throughout the evening.

The night will include a themed dinner, whisky tasting by Wolfhead Distillery, an exclusive diamond draw, a fashion show (showcasing Gentry Manor and Ford & McIntyre), silent auction, and all the way from Halifax – a live performance by ragtime trio The Vaudevillians.

Funds raised will help United Way’s 27 funded programs which impact over 44,500 local lives.

Members of the Rotary Club of Chatham Sunrise presented a $10,000 cheque to Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation recently. The funds will be directed towards the Oncology program at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance to improve the hospital’s ability to treat cancer patients.

The donation was made possible through the annual Roses for Rotary Campaign put on by the service club. By selling roses priced at $25 per dozen, the Rotary Club is able to raise money each year to be reinvested into

Job fair set for Oct. 1 The Chatham Voice

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s Employment Resource Centres, in partnership with the Chatham-Kent Workforce Planning Board are inviting employers to participate in the third annual CK Works! Community Job Fair.

The event takes place Oct. 1 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the John D Bradley Centre.

This event emerged out of a need identified from data obtained by the Chatham-Kent Workforce Planning Board in their annual EmployerOne survey, a local labour market survey funded through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

“Employers are telling us that they are struggling to fill their vacant positions because they are not receiving enough applications. CK Works! Community Job Fair makes it easier for employers to meet with job seekers by

bringing them together with the common goal of finding a job. Last year’s event brought in over 700 job seekers. With those kinds of numbers, who knows who you, as an employer, might meet who would be a perfect addition to your organization!” said Kristy Jacobs, Project Manager of the Chatham-Kent Workforce Planning Board, in a media release.

The Municipality’s Resident Attraction and Retention team, Employment and Social Services, Economic Development Services, as well as community partners will be promoting the event to job seekers and graduates in the region and employers within Chatham-Kent in the coming months.

Spaces are limited. This event operates on a first come, first serve basis.

In Sharp’s district alone, there are about 140 referees, and Ansell got the nod.

“When you look at his development, it’s really easy to see why he was chosen. He checks all the boxes,” Sharp said of Ansell. “There’s self-improvement, development and giving back. He took a mentorship program this year.”

Angela Pestowka named 2019 Kidney Walk Ambassador

Angela Pestowka has lived with kidney disease for all of her life.

And she considers herself lucky.

Angela, 45, of Chatham, is the 2019 Kidney Walk Ambassador for Chatham-Kent.

She said shortly after her birth, doctors discovered she had polycystic kidney disease (PKD). It changed her life before it really got started.

“They found that when I was about two weeks old.

Normally people don’t find out until they are in kidney failure,” Angela said. “I’ve been so lucky.

They’ve been able to give me all the preventative stuff for 45 years.”

PKD causes multiple cysts to form on the kidneys, which can reduce kidney function substantially.

The average kidney is the size of a fist; Angela’s kidneys are roughly the size of footballs.

She’s on blood pressure and cholesterol medication. Plus she adheres to a strict diet.

“The diet is number one.

Low to no sodium, mostly vegetarian. I eat barely any red meat,” she explained.

uses light weights, walks and does yoga for cardio.

Her regimen has paid off.

She’s avoided going into kidney failure and the resulting long hours on dialysis machines. Plus, the typical life expectancy for people with PKD is about five years. Here she is, 45 years later.

“Just regular check ups. I go every six months to the kidney care centre in London,” Angela said. “They check my levels there.

They may advise me to eat less potassium, or perhaps I need more iron.”

She’s been asked to participate in various kidney studies there as well.

Through it all, she enjoys her time at the centre.

“I love them there. They are fantastic,” she said of the personnel, and it goes beyond the nurses and doctors. “It’s the level of care. When I go there, I see a social worker who makes sure I can financially afford to do what I do.”

There is a pharmacist on site to review medications with Angela, and even vitamins to ensure there are no bad reactions.

The bi-annual visits are a long way from what Angela faced as a child.

“When I was younger, up until the age of 12, I’d have to stay a week in a London hospital. They didn’t have the technology. I had to get all the tests done there. It was horrifying. I hated it,”

she said.

Angela is a fitting ambassador for the walk, not just due to her years dealing with PKD. “My team raised more than $6,000 last year. My goal is $10,000 this year,” she said of her fundraising squad, the Kidney Snatchers.

Angela is driven to raise money, with the end goal to help fund research.

“Research saves lives.

Research gives hope. Research opens up opportunities that were previously unthinkable for people like me,” she said.

Serving as the ambassador holds special meaning to Angela as well.

“When I think about kidney ambassador, I think of what it means to the Chatham-Kent community as a whole, not me alone,” she said. “Healthy diet and exercise habits, coupled with a positive mindset, build a vibrant and flourishing community. For many, the progression of chronic disease can be prevented or slowed by implementing diligent self-care. I also aim to promote awareness of the importance of being an organ and/or tissue donor and giving the gift of life.”

The walk takes place Sept. 15 in Kingston Park in Chatham.

So, it’s a Friday morning. I’m wiping sleep from my eyes and manage to run my electric shaver over my stubble.

A look in the mirror reveals a bleary-eyed, middle-aged man whose goatee is in bad need of a trim.

No problem. Out comes the rechargeable beard trimmer. These things are items many a bearded man relies on to keep them nicely groomed.

OK, one problem, as I said, my goatee was in dire need of a trim. I tend to let it get a little long before trimming it back close to the chin skin.

My first delay on trimming it outright is to just get the long hairs of the moustache off my upper lip.

That always bugs me.

And it seems I regularly think about letting it grow a bit longer.

And then I can’t take it and have to trim it back.

This time when I fired up the trimmer, I got less than one swipe from under my chin to under below my soul patch before the trimmer stopped.

Sure, there’s a lot of hair in the trimmer, but, man, the battery was dead!

That’s not the look I was going for – a tightly cropped stripe down the middle of my goatee.

Fortunately, after clearing out the hair from the trimmer, I could give it a couple of quick, light passes to blend the area in with the longer sections on either side before it died.

Otherwise, I’d have looked like skunk in negative.

I must remember to charge that thing on a regular basis, and trim on weekend. That way, if I mess up again, chances are I can wait, recharge and finish the job before going out in public.

Next time, I will also look for a corded trimmer. I don’t need a rechargeable. I just need one that works when I want it to, and one that is ready to go despite my forgetfulness.

Mind games Finn, our cat is a sly one. He will wage mental war on me when I

On a recent weekend, we returned home after hanging out with friends. Normally, after being shut inside for a while, the cat flies out of our house to enjoy the outdoors.

This time, we apparently woke the dude up at 1 a.m.

So much for being a nocturnal creature, right?

But wait for it.

Our daughter topped up the little guy’s food and called it a night. My wife followed shortly thereafter.

I retired to the basement to doze off in the recliner.

Finn followed. I figured he’d join me in slumber. Instead, he face butted me with reckless abandon, to ensure I was awake. Then he proceeded to loudly clean himself in my lap, constantly licking and jostling.

When he was done, he went up the stairs. Just as I was starting to doze off, he meowed loudly at the top of the stairs, and wouldn’t stop.

I figured he wanted out, so I opened the side door.

Finn just stared out into the darkness. It had started to rain lightly, and it appeared he wanted no part of it.

Ugh. It was now after 2 a.m. I closed the door and headed off to bed. Finn, in the meantime, went back to his food.

Before I could lie down, he was back at it, meowing at the top of his lungs.

I showed him the door again, and was ready to toss his butt out into the night. He must have sensed this, as he sauntered off at his own pace.

It’s not fair. He plays mind games with me when I’m half asleep.

It sucks being outsmarted by a darned cat.
